wo learners from a Delft high school are embarking on a journey of a lifetime.

On Friday 29 August, Melissa Cupido and Darren Bailey from Rosendal High boarded a plane for the first time in their lives to represent South Africa at the International Coubertin Youth Forum in Slovakia.

They will be accompanied by teacher, Jas-

mina Majiet, from The Hague Primary.

Majiet explained they will be the first-ever South African delegation to attend this forum which takes place in a different country every two years.

“We (The Hague) are in partnership with Rosendal High aspiring the title and official status of ‘Coubertin School’, which means a school which specialises in sports or performing arts with an emphasis on the values of physical education to ensure a coherent and harmonious overall education,” she

Last week Melissa, a Grade 9 learner, was very excited about her upcoming journey.

“When I wrote my essay for the forum I never knew that I would be chosen, but I was overjoyed when the teachers told me that I would be attending,” she said.

“I want to thank my teachers for believing in me and I will make them proud of me for giving me this chance.”

Melissa takes part in athletics and has re-

cently discovered a passion for hurdles.

Darren Bailey was just as excited and said this invitation was a big boost that encouraged him to believe in himself.

“My parents are both dead and life has been tough for me,” he says.

“The support of my teachers for this trip has motivated me to work harder to achieve something of value in life because I will be the first in my family to get a matric certificate but that is not enough, I want to study further.

“My passion is soccer and my dream is to use sport as a means to show youth that hard work is the path to success in your life.”

When the group returns they have been invited to give a presentation at the second Cape Town International Peace Conference hosted by the Foundation for Sport, Development and Peace that will be held on 17 and 18 September.

On Friday they packed their bags and headed for the Cape Town Environmental Education Trust centre on the banks of Zeekoevlei for a weekend of discovering the biodiversity of the peninsula and the potential that is within themselves.

Grade 6 teacher Thirsten Fischer was just as excited as the learners who attended and is determined that this must become an annual event.

Speaking at the centre on Saturday afternoon, he pointed out that more children from the school needed to experience this type of adventure.

“This is a first for our school and I think it must become an annual event for our prefects,” he said.

“In a short space of time the activities that they did here not only gave them a new perspective on the part they can play in the natural environment around them but how they can believe in themselves and work together as a team.

“Last night they had to do a night nature walk, this morning they worked on a presentation about leadership, and with every activity they’re realising that the responsibility for their own lives is in their hands.”

Principal Andrew Swartz also accompanied the children and was just as excited as Fischer.

“For our prefects this camp gives them a better insight into how they should act as leaders at our school,” he said.

“Through the activities they have seen how they can become positive role-models at the school, learning lessons from nature.

“I am also convinced that this should be an annual event/camp but we need some partners to help us make this dream a reality.

“There are too many children who come from unemployed families but we believe we can make it happen with some support from sponsors or individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of our youth.”

The camp culminated with choosing the head boy and girl as well as their deputies.

Alert Mfuleni residents were recently thanked by local police for their assistance in apprehending three men found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Mfuleni police spokesperson Nomathemba Muavha said the men were arrested last Wednesday at about 01:30 after Mfuleni police responded to information that the men were in possesion of an illegal pistol.

Police searched a business premises in the Burundi squatter camp where they discovered the 38 Special firearm with eight rounds of ammunition.

“A major concern is the concomitant use of herbal medicines alongside conventional drug treatments,” says Awortwe. “It is well known that herbal products can interfere with the enzymes responsible for the chemical breakdown of drugs in the body and therefore have an effect on the clinical efficacy of a drug or its toxicity.”

Awortwe’s research found that MO inhib-

ited two important enzymes – one responsible for the breakdown of ART, cardiovascular and anti-anxiety drugs, and the other responsible for the elimination of drugs decreasing gastric acid secretion, anti-arrhythmics and anti-malarials – which could cause toxicity.

According to Awortwe, one-third of cases of acute kidney failure in Africa are estimated to be caused by traditional medicines.

Another important example of drug interaction between herbal and conventional medicine is the birth of “miracle babies” in women who are taking oral birth control at the same time as St John’s Wort.

This herbal product stimulates the elimination of the hormones present in the birth control pills, thereby rendering it ineffective.

“The use of herbal medicines is increasing all over the world and many consumers assume that because these products are herbal or natural, they are also completely safe, but this is not true,” says Awortwe.

He recommends that patients should avoid taking MO together with conventional drugs. “Patients already taking MO as supplement should inform their doctors about this to avoid further harm.”

Starting at 10:00, it will be hosted at the Morea Congregation Church (cor Haarlem and Batavia roads) and is being conducted in partnership with Belhar SAPS, Belhar CPF and the Goodwood parole board.

Captain Herman de Jager, the acting station commander of Belhar said the aim of the imbizo is to promote healthier environments for the reintegration of offenders and to also assist victims of crime in healing from the trauma.

“A Victim Offender Dialogue (VOD) is a space whereby an offender and victim exchange dialogue about the effects of crime on the parties involved (and can be extended to anyone that has been also affected),” he says.

“Through the process of VOD, our experience has shown healing does take place, which in turn assists in the reintegration of the offender back into the society.

“Victims of crime become aware of the processes the offender has undergone through rehabilitation inside of the Correc-

tional Centre, and are also able to have any additional uncertainties about possible future parole or supervision placement responded to after this process.”

De Jager said it is important that community members are enlightened about the processes of correctional supervision and the parole board so they can know that they too play a role in how the offenders are accepted back into the community.

“They also need to know they can play a role in supervising our parolees’ behaviour whilst they are in the system.

“We want to give the power back to our communities and not have them live in fear.”

A major factor in hosting this imbizo is that the police have identified a need in the Belhar community.

“We find more and more parolees are coming out of jail and the people need to be made aware of these processes.

“Our appeal is for as many people as possible to attend, especially residents from Ext 13.

“The imbizo will be very structured around the VOD process and the police will also will make a five minute presentation.”

ith African Traditional Medicine Week 2015 having come to an end on 31 August, the Tygerberg Hospital warned that combining herbal remedies with conventional drugs can be harmful.

A popular herbal remedy, Moringa Oleifera (MO), colloquially known as “Saviour of the Poor”, could interfere with antiretroviral treatment (ART) and have toxic effects when used concurrently with ART and other conventional medicine, says Dr Charles Awortwe, a researcher in clinical pharmacology at the Stellenbosch University Tygerberg campus.

“In South Africa up to eight in 10 people with HIV use traditional medicines at some time,” Awortwe says.

His research on MO, also called “Miracle Tree”, “Tree of Life”, “Mother’s Best Friend” or “God’s Gift to Man”, showed that taking MO as a herbal supplement could potentially worsen the health of patients on drug treatment.

MO is rich in protein, calcium, iron and vitamin C, and is used in the management of about 300 medical and lifestyle conditions, including HIV, cancer, arthritis, asthma, high cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia) and high blood sugar levels (hyper-

There’s a buzz in Bishop Lavis following the announcement that upgrades are in line for the suburb.

Rose Rau, chairperson for subcouncil 5, has confirmed the tender for the planning of the Bishop Lavis Urban Node Upgrade was awarded to ARG Design and a steering committee from the area has been elected.

She said this phase of the project is expected to take about 18 months in collaboration with the consultant team that include ARG Design, public participation professionals, civil and transport engineering, and a safety analyst.

The project manager for the City of Cape Town is Bronwen Jillings.

“On Tuesday 18 August the members of the consultant team met at ward councillor Asa Abraham’s office and did a walkabout

of the core area.

“This walk started at the civic centre, moved on through the town centre itself, crossed over on the route to the Lavistown Station and came back through the sports facilities, continued up to the park between Kasteelberg and Vygie Roads and returned to the councillor’s office.

“This visit enabled the team members to engage the community and experience firsthand the current status of the area and the existing facilities.”

Rau also pointed out that another important step in this process was the establishment of the project steering committee.

This committee comprises representatives from arts and culture, civic association, faith based (Christian and Muslim), education, youth, sport, safety and security, formal business, informal traders, physically challenged and vulnerable group, as well as NGOs.

Mfuleni police are seeking the assistance of the public to locate a missing person.

The 26-year-old Baxolile Mbethe went missing from his home in Bardale squatter camp where he lives, on Sunday 23 August at about 18:30.

Groeiende menslike nedersetting op die terrein van die Universiteit Stellenbosch-bestuurskool (USB), digby ’n Bellville-sleepark, het inwoners aan die praat.

“By die jongste vergadering verlede Vrydag is besluit om bykomende patrollies in te stel.

“Die polisie sal ook die wetstoepassingseenheid bystaan om saans na afloop van die eenheid se gebruiklike ‘opruimingsoperasies’ te verseker dat die plakkers nie terugkeer nie.”

R

andall Titus, well-known in Bellville South and surrounds as DJ Randall, is making a difference in his community as an entrepreneur.

Working at Cape Town TV, he documents happenings around town, but he is also the founder of Community Vibes Radio based in Kuils River and is now spreading the good news via an app he has created.

His dream started when he did a stint on Radio Kaapse Punt and he was inspired to think about his own radio station.

“I put a proposal together and approached local councillor Grant Twigg for some assistance,” he says.

“We then decided to start an online radio station called Community Vibes Radio and with the help of another councillor, Brenda Hansen, we were then three partners.

“There are now four partners with the inclusion of Carol Beerwinkel and they all agreed to help me in their free time.”

The station has been growing steadily but this was not enough for Randall.

“Online streaming was not enough for me and I started thinking how I could enhance the experience for listeners,” he continues.

“That’s when I started working on the app, LekkaChat, and now people can not only listen to the radio on their mobile devices but see the presenters while they are busy with their programmes while chatting to each other or commenting on what is happening.”

He chuckles when he recalls how the name of the app came about.

“Everybody asks me about the name and it’s my observation when girls tell their boyfriends ‘Jy kan maar lekka chat with other girls’ on other social media platforms.”

Randall also explained the app can send documents to friends and family around the world. This includes pictures, videos and more while listening to Cape Vibes Radio.

lue municipal waste bags are not for sale and those selling them obtained them illegally.

This is according to Clive Justus, chairperon of subcouncil 4. At the recent subcouncil meeting, Justus requested the greater Parow and Goodwood communities report where these bags are being sold at traffic lights along Voortrekker Road and even in some shops.

Justus said selling the bags is not only illegal, it also creates the opportunity for people to use them for household waste which is then left in the street, often for weeks.

“The council workers sweeping the streets are often accused of leaving the blue bags along the street. This practice cannot be justified and a strict instruction has been given to remove the bags on the day.

“However, often the blue bags containing household refuse are left on the footway, in the park or on vacant land by residents having made use of the illegally obtained blue bags.

“It is then assumed that council’s area cleaning staff is negligent, whilst that is not the case,” he said.

Earlier in 2015, the words “Not for sale” were printed on all the municipal bags, but despite this, hawkers still boldly sell them.

“The blue bags are specific to City of Cape Town and are used by area cleaning staff and are issued to contractors performing work on behalf of the council.

“It is apparent that the blue bags that are issued to contract staff is being abused by onselling to unsuspecting customers.

Die buurtwag in Ruyterwacht is bekommerd dat ’n nuwe onwettige pad wat tussen dié dorp en Elsiesrivier uitgery is, deur misdadigers gebruik kan word om te ontsnap. ’n Tweespoorpad is uit Livingstonstraat in die rigting van Elsiesrivier gery en volgens Faizel Adams, voorsitter van die buurtwag, is dit onaanvaarbaar.

“Elke ou kan mos nie net ry soos hy wil nie. Daar is amptelike paaie wat gebruik kan word, wat nie baie verder is as die onwettige pad nie. Ons vrees nou dat booswigte hul dade in Ruyterwacht kan pleeg en ongesiens by die nuwe pad deurglip en in Elsiesrivier verdwyn,” sê Adams.

Michael Britz, raadslid vir die gebied, sê die pad is heeltemal onwettig.

“Dit is onwettig en gevaarlik om net self paaie uit te ry. Daar is wette wat dié goed reguleer.

“Ek is bitter ontsteld oor die onwettige pad, want dit dui op wetteloosheid in die gebied,” sê Britz.

City rebate available for elderly home owners At the recent subcouncil 4 meeting, chairperson Clive Justus reminded senior citizens to make use of the City’s rebate scheme for basic services.

“The City of Cape Town municipality provides a generous rates rebate scheme for its senior citizens. If you are over 60 years of age, own your own home and have a monthly income of R12 000 or below then you could qualify for this benefit,” he said.

Local florist wins flower ‘Oscars’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

passionate local florist did Cape Town proud by bagging a gold medal at this year’s Interflora African Areas Convention – the Oscars of flower arranging.

Vernon Wasserfall, owner of Flowers from Heaven in Brackenfell, has specialised in floral arrangements for 25 years.

fair with flowers which started when he was only 16.

Growing up, he was keen to help his mother, a jack of all trades, when it came to party planning.

“She did it all, from weddings to funerals,” he says, remembering the old “swans” made with ice cream sticks for formal functions back in the day.

He laughs, “In those days it was a hit.”

Vernon says he was thrilled to be invited to this prestigious event, held at the Saint George Hotel in Pretoria a fortnight ago.

“The convention aims to bring florists from all over the continent together to provide a platform to showcase new ideas and innovations in the industry,” Vernon explains.

“It also afforded me an opportunity to compete against florists from all over Africa and bringing this prestigious title home was the cherry on top.”

Contestants were given two hours to create four arrangements – a sympathy arrangement, a new baby arrangement, a garden bridal bouquet and a corporate look.

“The challenge was not knowing what flowers or containers would be available for the challenges,” he says.

In the end it was Vernon’s passion and natural flair that secured him a first place.

“I never expected this win and created quite an upset when I beat top designers who were all ‘serial winners’ at

Judges afterward noted that his yellow baby arrangement perfectly depicted the theme of “giving life”.

Vernon best describes his style as “dra-

“When you walk into a wedding venue and you see the flowers you don’t want to say, ‘What the hell is that?’. The first word over your lips has to be ‘wow!’,” he says.

owls is growing in popularity in the Western Province and becoming a “cool” sport. Gone are the days when this pastime was labelled “old man’s marbles”.

Bowls is a sport for all ages, races, and abilities.

There is a massive interest among the younger generation and with the upcoming u.19 tournament to be held over the weekend of 2-4 October, excitement is building up.

Western Province, Boland and Eden

(Southern Cape) will battle it out for bragging rights in the Strand. At present, trials are still in progress to select the best possible team to compete come 2 October.

“We are very excited about this tournament and the hype around it. It just shows that the future of bowls is looking bright and the talent that is coming through is a thrill to see,” said Western Province Bowls marketing and committee convenor Leon Venter.

“We are also again presenting a social business league at the Old Oak Bowling Club where we create a platform for companies to interact with one another and

ted my children in June. There were over 4 000 entries and the spirit at the event was fantastic. It was interesting to see that Aaron Teys became the second youngest male winner at the age of 21 and at the age of 18, Ellen Ryan won the women’s division.

“That is the vision we have. We are trying our best to involve younger people and children at school. And let me tell you, once the bug has bitten, it is not going to leave you,” said Venter.

MOTORSPORT: YOUNGSTER TESTS HIS METTLE ON THE TRACK

Teenager to set record ADRIAN PHEIFFER A new motor racing record will be set when 14-year-old Giordano Lupini faces the starter for the first GTi Challenge race.

During the seventh round of the Wingfield Motors sponsored (Flower) Power Series at Killarney on Saturday, he will become the Western Cape’s youngest ever main circuit competitor.

Although the boy has had a measure of experience on the go-kart track, it won’t be easy. The GTi Challenge is a metallic contact sport and not for sissies.

The cars are divided into three mechanically equal classes and it then up to the driver to produce the results. Lupini’s opposition in a crowded class C is going to include characters like Table View’s gritty reigning champion Paul Simon, Ebrahim Levy, the man who would be king and the fast improving Dewald Lubbe.

They are certainly not going to make any allowance for his age.

However while Lupini’s debut will be interesting, Saturday’s high speed drama is mo-

re likely to come from four of the fastest sports cars in South Africa. Because Gauteng’s legendary Toby Venter is going to be in action here in his very special Porsche GT2R. He will be challenging a giant 8.4 litre, V10 Dodge Viper driven by Blaauwberg’s Craig Jarvis as well as current sports car champion Francis Carruthers who will be at the wheel of his potent Juno SS3.

An additional threat is likely to be posed

by Johan Engelbrecht in another Porsche GT2R. This driver was in fine form while on his way to victory at the most recent Power Series meeting and the so far unbeaten Toby Venter may be in for a surprise.

The big one-make V8 Supercar contest also promises to be a hard fought affair. Here, the reigning titleholder and former South African Superkart champion Marcel Angel is in overall second place behind the Boland’s Richard Schreuder.

And although Angel won last month’s battle, he is still five points behind Schreuder and only one point ahead of a challenging Fabio Tafani, as the series moves towards its close.
