ome progress is in the pipeline for housing projects in the area. In the first report for subcouncil 5, chairperson Rose Rau spoke about the status of various housing projects that have been planned for a long time. “There is good news with regard to various housing projects,” she said. “With regard to the Valhalla Housing Project, these houses are being built for the Sewendelaan residents as a result of the court action from some years ago, but also includes beneficiaries from Bonteheuwel. “There will be 770 houses, single and double storey, on the corner of Angela Road and Valhalla Drive next to the new Sport and Recreation Hub.”
She further explained that while civils have been completed, the roll-out has been delayed by the need for additional infrastructure development. “The roll-out includes provision for pedestrian safety and there is also land allocated for economic development,” said Rau.
Early stages The Hague Integrated Housing Project is also progressing. The project is provide 2 407 houses, single and double storey. “Project One in Rosendal will have 288 houses, Project Two will have 1012 in The Hague, 211 in Project Three in Eindhoven and Project Four will see 896 units in the Hague,” explained Rau. “Beneficiaries are from the City’s housing database and are from Delft.”

Another provincial project that has been coming on for a long time is the Delft 3 and 5 projects which are part of the N2 Gateway project. “Beneficiaries as per the Land Availability Agreement (LAA) of the N2 Gateway Project includes Langa, Tsunami, Freedom Farm, Malawi camp and Delft backyarders,” she said. “There is also an infill housing project coming up and these are projects that are in the early stages and will roll-out in Bonteheuwel and Clarke Estate.” Rau also explained that the City projects operate strictly in terms of the city’s housing database and source the beneficiaries on a chronological basis. The office for this project is at the subcouncil 5 satellite office at the Hague (the old subcouncil 23 office).

“Both provincial and city projects have specific allocations for beneficiaries with special needs and all projects use a certain component of local subcontractors and local labour.
Cemetery expansion “Delft 3 and 5 will cater for all qualifiers in Tsunami and should help make provision for the cemetery expansion to take place. The Tsunami shackdwellers will be accommodated in a different project.” Rau also pointed out that there critical basic qualifications with regard to occupying these houses. “You must earn less than R3 000 per month per family and never have owned a house before,” she says. “You must also be registered on the City’s housing database.”
