COMMUTERS: STREAK OF ROBBERIES END
Gang of taxi robbers behind bars NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
A
rmed robbers who terrorised taxi commuters for weeks have been caught. One of the suspects was even jailed for a similar crime a few years ago. Several robberies happened between December 2020 and January 2021, explains Sgt Anele Siwisa, spokesperson of the Bellville police station. Unwitting commuters were picked up in a brand new taxi, mostly at Tygervalley Shopping Centre and the two Willowbridge centres. These commuters soon realised something was wrong when the taxi didn’t go on the planned route but instead went on Carl Cronje Drive towards Frans Conradie Drive or Durban Road towards the N1. The guard of the taxi then threatened them by gunpoint, stealing personal belongings like cellphones, cash and bank cards. He demanded the pin numbers of bank cards and withdrew money at different locations after the robbery. In many cases, victims were tied up with cable ties. They were later dropped off. Some victims reported how they saw the
guard and taxi driver removing the number plate before they could exit the taxi. When it was evident that these crimes were becoming a trend, the visible policing chief, Col Thembelani Mahlatshana, tasked WO Whitey van Zyl with investigating the matter. Van Zyl followed up the matter and he and WO Gawie Hawkins and Capt Lorette Dippenaar spent hours contacting and speaking to complainants. After taking all the information into account they saw a similar taxi on video footage, where they identified its number plate. The taxi was later flagged on licence plate recognition (LPR) cameras and pulled over in Kuils River on 29 January. The driver (31) was interviewed and inside his taxi police found a firearm holster, cable ties and a bank card. He later confessed to the crimes and appeared in court two weeks ago. Two other suspects were apprehended last week and have since appeared in court. Bellville station commander, Brig Phindiwe Ntunge, applauded the members involved in this investigation. “More arrests are imminent,” he said.
