A new stop­animation film aims to raise awareness around domestic violence.

Pledge campaign launched to make film against abuse A group of local domestic violence organisations and volunteers have found a novel way to raise awareness on domestic violence and to support victims of abuse.

Write Yourself Free is a stop motion animation project, but the organisations involved first need to find the funding to create the awareness film. They’ll be doing this through the crowd funding site www.thundafund.com, where donors can pledge a donation in exchange for a reward.

The awareness film revolves around the victim falling in love, but experiencing several kinds of abuse and either doesn’t know it is a form of abuse or needs guidance to get help. Eventually, the victim writes themself free and gets the necessary help.

The story will run alongside a poem being recited, which will reinforce the film’s message. The end of the animation will showcase organisations and provide information on how to seek help.

Tea for counselling charity Table View Lions Club is hosting a morning tea party on Saturday (15 November) at the Bloubergstrand Hall in Andrew Foster Road at 10:00.

All of the profit raised from the public goes towards a specified charity. This year, the funds will be donated to FUSS (Facing Up Support Services).

FUSS offers support, care and counselling to young people, communities and families who have been affected by life-changing circumstances or events to help them grow through their pain, become more resilient and play a vital role in their communities.

olie Gouws is a principal with principles.

“It is imperative that in our ongoing striving for excellence, we create memories that will last a lifetime,” says Table View Primary’s newest principal.

This year was his first in Cape Town after several at a private school in Gauteng.

“In private schools, especially in Gauteng, it is considerably competition-based.

These schools focus on selling the best product to parents, who very much prefer to send their children to a private school. In the Cape I find it different. Here parents consider the final product and what the different add-ons are for the children, be it a government school or a private school,” says Gouws.

Sport culture The keen principal hopes to endear the school to the surrounding community by achieving on the sport field.

This is also how he aims to “create memories that will last a lifetime”.

“The culture in the school should be that the learner wants to do sports. This is the drive we are aiming for, and I think we have taken big strides in establishing that,” says Gouws.

He adds that academics are an equally important ingredient in achieving excellence.

Yet, more often than not the community only hears about academic achievement a few times a year, whereas news of supremacy on the sport field happens far more regularly.

“Any child has the necessary talent to do well in some sport or other. They must just be exposed to the proper coaching or facilities so they can flourish.”

This year a new pavilion was built at the school, so now sport meets have a “different dimension”.

The swimming pool area has also received a face-lift, with newly-erected shade netting to protect supporters from the weather.

Even the cricket/hockey field now has a few stands for the crowd.

The pavilion and the covered stands will not only benefit the parents, but also the learners who will be protected from the sun during inter-house meetings.

Improved structures Gouws says this will translate to better performance on the field.

When Gouws was asked how his philosophy has contributed to the school’s success, he said he did not want to take any credit.

“All I did was put improved structures in place.”

This includes improved communication between teachers and parents, but as already established, sport flows through Gouw’s veins.The school’s World Cup initiative and the new cross-country team is something he is particularly impressed with.

Other noteworthy changes include rugby, hockey and netball C and D teams (which previously suffered from limited match exposure) competing in the Play for the Future tournament, and more matches being played in the three winter sports.

Gouws, who used to coach, has split loyalties when it comes to which rugby team he supports.

“I want the Lions players at the Stormers to do well,” he smiles.“One Monday when I came to school the roads were extremely quiet, so I thought it was a public holiday, because the Stormers finally won a game.

As it turned out there was an accident on the N1.”

City health makes plans for contraceptive demand

ince the introduction of the Implanon contraception device at public health facilities in February, city health has trained nearly 200 staff members on the insertion technique. More than 15 000 devices have been implanted since the new method was introduced.

The city is now increasing its capacity to provide Implanon to women at public health facilities amid increasing demand.

Implanon is a device that provides contraception for women for three years after insertion. The device is a rod that is inserted under the skin with a preloaded applicator. A trained practitioner inserts it into a small incision in the upper arm. It stays there, releasing a progesterone-like hormone for up to three years to prevent pregnancy.

“This method of contraception differs from the more established methods in that women do not have to remember to take a pill every day or return for an injection every few months. It gives them more control over their health, well-being and reproductive choices, especially women for whom unplanned pregnancy is undesirable or a health risk.

“However, it is important to note that while the device protects against pregnancy, like other contraceptive methods, wo-

The device is provided free of charge to clients at public health facilities. The side effects are rare and generally mild, with only a small percentage of women requiring removal of the device. For women who wish to conceive, fertility is restored within two weeks after the removal of the device.

Between February and September 2014, city health has observed a marked increase in requests for the Implanon device, as shown in the number of implants completed at clinics across the metropole.

“We are expecting demand for the device to increase, which is why we are training more of our staff members to meet that demand. Ideally we would like to see Implanon become as mainstream as other methods of contraception, which continue to be available to our clients, but I do want to caution that the device would not be suited to women with certain medical conditions or who are on certain medications.

“Our staff are, however, on hand to help women make the choices that are right for them, both from a medical and lifestyle perspective,” added van Minnen.

About the Koeberg Public Safety Information Forum

Section 26(4) of the NNR Act states that “The holder of a nuclear installation license must establish a public safety information forum as prescribed in order to inform the persons living in the municipal area in respect of which an emergency plan (EP) has been established on nuclear safety and radiation safety matters.”

What is the Public Safety Information Forum (PSIF)?

The PSIF is a meeting which takes place four times a year. It is used as a platform for residents within the municipal boundary of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to enquire and receive nuclearrelated information from the facility.

Which topics are discussed?

The forum will address any topic that the members feel could impact their health, environment and safety from a nuclear emergency preparedness point of view.

Who should attend?

All persons living within the municipal area around Koeberg; all affected and interested organisations or parties and any other persons concerned about their health and safety from a nuclear and radiation safety point of view are welcome to attend the forum. Animal centre enjoys new home DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

A

fter a harrowing seven months, the folks at Lucky Lucy Animal Rescue Foundation can finally exhale after moving to their sprawling new grounds in Malmesbury.

Having called Kraaifontein home since its inception in 2010, the organisation was forced to vacate its premises when notified in April that the land would soon be developed for low-cost housing.

The news spelled disaster for this organisation, one of only a few pro-life organisations that tries to relieve the plight of severely neglected and abused township and street animals in and around Cape Town.

They currently house almost 300 destitute animals, which they have lovingly nursed back to health.

“What a journey it has been! When we heard we had three months to move at the beginning of April, we had no alternative premises to move to and literally no funding to do it with,” says spokesperson Adele Spreeth.

Extended stay “We immediately started strategising. Never ever were we going to let the animals down,” she says adding it had been their hope to buy their own land, which would secure the future of the foundation.

Land owner John Mathews, the CEO of Garden Cities, met with the foundation and agreed to extend their stay on the land until the end of October, something Spreeth says they would be ever grateful for.

The organisation eagerly started raising funds and within months a miracle happened when an anonymous donor donated enough money for them to buy a tract of land on the N7.

“We now had a property, but no funding

for the move, and continued fundraising. We took it week by week, telling the public what we needed.

With the support from several businesses and private individuals, many who want to stay anonymous, we could continue to build our dream rescue centre.”

They started building the new centre in August, with volunteers working weekend after weekend and fulltime staff working overtime to get everything done in time.

“We laughed, we cried and we are all a lot fitter and stronger but we made it.”

Big move “During The second last week of October we were able to move all our cats to the new cattery on the farm and last week we were

able to move all the dogs,” she said.

“There are so many people to thank, we cannot start naming all as the list is so long and we don’t want to miss anybody.

To each and every person, and every company that has helped us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

Spreeth says the work goes ahead and they will be busy for the next few months making sure the dogs and cats get the best they can provide.

“Only three of our 20 bigger camps are comfy ‘homes’ and our rehab facility still needs to be completed to improve the stay of our fury friends there.”

Continued improvements To continue improving the rescue centre, Spreeth says they will still need the

following items: shade cloth, roof sheets, paving, old wooden garage doors, wood, wine barrels, kennels, cement, solar lights and a solar geyser.

To get to the new farm, take the N7 turn-off from the N1 towards Malmesbury and proceed past the Melkbosstrand turn-off. From the Swartland Engen One Stop (N7) towards Malmesbury it is exactly 9.6km on your right.

When you get to the board that says “Malmesbury 20”, slow down. The grounds are about 400 meters from there on your right.

Beteken huwelik niks meer nie?

Gun law examples are incorrect Lionel Lategan’s letter “Armed citizenry quells criminals” is disingenuous and ill-informed (TygerBurger, 5 November).

To draw comparisons between the USA and South Africa is like comparing cheese with duckweed. America has probably the best law enforcement in the world, yet is unable to curb gun crime. Let me correct Lategan on a few points.

No state in the USA bans citizens from owning firearms – it is merely the degree of lack of control of them which varies wildly. Texas is one of the largest states and New York one of the smallest. A far greater proportion of New York State citizens live in cities, whereas in Texas the population is largely rural.

As crime tends to be more prevalent in cities than the countryside, the inference can be drawn. There are other

demographic differences as well.

Lategan appears to be the South African ambassador for the NRA and possibly subscribes to their ridiculous clichés such as: “the only defence against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” and “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”.

It’s true but also begs questions. How did the bad guys get the guns in the first place? Possibly from good guys who were careless about safeguarding their firearms?

Guns don’t kill people, they merely make it very easy for people to kill people – often in large numbers.

Our firearm laws are excellent. I wish the same could be said about the people supposed to be protecting us.

Summer Greens in need of a clean up I took a drive through Summer Greens the other day and was shocked to see the condition of most of the houses.

They need a coat of paint, the grass is not cut, fences are falling apart and dirty, and the properties are untidy in front.

The general upkeep was pathetic.

On making some enquiries, I discovered that most of the above-mentioned properties belong to a certain individual.

If I can see the decline in Summer Greens, then how does the councillor not see this?

Years ago, when your property was not properly maintained, the council would notify you to do something about it or they would do it and bill you.

Where is our ward councillor and the City of Cape Town?

To me, it looks like they are just not interested.

Summer Greens is in desperate needs of a good and thorough clean-up.

Get creative with collective nouns It is perhaps time to get a bit serious in the “Silly Season”.

Language is dynamic and always changing, although not always for the better.

But there are some words that have possibly outlived their era. The formal collective nouns and some adjective could do with a “local is lekker” flavour.

I am sure some readers would improve and add to these.

A pod of whales or dolphins comes from a pod of peas. It simply does not really describe the scene. Some alternative words could better describe them: a mighty mass of whales; an exuberance of dolphins; or a shock of sharks.

A poll, pollution or promise of politicians. A dose of doctors.

A charge or lie of lawyers; a corruption of criminals. A frenzy of reporters; a beer of braaiers; or a rough of rugby players. A bundle of babies; a trouble tempest of teens; or a giggle of girls.

A cuddle of kittens; an attitude of cats; or a bark or howl of dogs. A mischief of monkeys; a stampede of elephants; a leap of springbok; a chase of cheetahs; or a bounce of bunnies. .

The Soil will be the first act on stage at this year’s Kirstenbosch Summer Concert Series.

Kirstenbosch summer fare The Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset concert series will start their bumper season off with The Soil on Sunday 23 November.

The series includes top local and international acts and runs until Sunday 5 April 2015.

Newcomers to this year’s line up include The Soil and Barbara Hendricks and the SA National Youth Orchestra while Oliver Mtukudzi, Prime Circle, Johnny Clegg, Mi Casa, The Parlotones, Matthew Mole, Jimmy Nevis, Freshlyground, Goldfish, Mi Casa, and Jeremy Loops are back by popular demand.

People from different organisations, and individuals as far as Grabouw and surrounding areas will be taking part in a hike up Platteklip Gorge (past the lower cable car station on Tafelberg Road) starting at 09:00, having lunch at Maclear’s Beacon - the highest point - and gathering for peace between 13:00 and 14:00 on the mountain top at the upper cable car station area.

Participants should wear an orange top (T-shirt, shirt, blouse or jacket) to show they value peace in South Africa.

People can hike up or take the cable car up and down or hike down again.

HAVE YOUR SAY! TABLE VIEW BEACHFRONT CONCEPTUAL TRANSPORT OPTIONS The City of Cape Town has recently completed a transport study for the Table View beachfront. The study has developed a number of conceptual transport options for the beachfront that aim to mitigate the impact of sea-level rise and improve the recreational amenity of the area.

Libertas summer of shows The Oude Libertas Amphitheatre is gearing up for the summer season with a full and varied line up that offers something for all tastes.

They start their season on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 November with The Enchanted Castle, a three-act children’s ballet, the cast of which ranges from the ages of 4 to 47.

Next on the bill is a tribute to the late Ollie Viljoen featuring Margit Rodenbeck-Meyer, Schalk Joubert, Kevin Gibson, Lou-Ann Stone, Stanislav Anguelov, Janine Neethling, Anna Davel, Valiant Swart, Pietman Geldenhuys and Henning Joubert on Sunday 16 November.

Karen Zoid will perform Karen on Piano on Friday 21 November with Melissa van der Spuy, while Sterling EQ and friends will be on stage on Wednesday 26 November.

The Libertas Choir, Cape Town Opera’s African Angels, Sheraaz World Fusion Band, Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels, Blackbyrd and Radio Kalahari Orkes are just some of the groups who will take their turn on the Oude Libertas stage, while orchestral fans can enjoy the Stellenbosch Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, the Stellenbosch Symphony City Orchestra and the Delft Big Band, amongst others.

Classical Christmas a Zanne favourite LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

A

very busy Zanne Stapelberg popped in to TygerBurger recently to chat about one of the performance highlights of her year.

The soprano will once again be performing at this year’s Classical Christmas/ Klassieke Kersfees concert and says she loves the beautiful setting for the show that takes place at the Liqui-Fruit Amphitheatre in Paarl.

“It’s almost as if people become kinder to each other this time of year,” Zanne says.

She says people come to the concert with a spirit of love and happiness, creating a wonderful atmosphere. Coupled with that is the mass choir and symphony orchestra performing well loved bilingual Christmas favourites.

“It’s just generally such a happy, uplifting concert,” says Zanne.

Zanne Stapelberg visited the Orange Couch recently to chat about her performance at the Classical Christmas concert.

Down-to-earth Zanne will be joined on stage by Jannie Moolman, Robbie Wessels, Corlea Botha and Cobus Snyman.

“Man, I love Corlea,” she says.

The two worked together for the first time at the Innibos festival in Nelspruit.

Zanne describes Corlea as down-to-earth and sweet. “It’s almost as if she’s unaware of how great she is and that makes her so charming.”

She’s also performed with Jannie and Cobus before, but never with Robbie. “I think I might challenge him to sing some opera notes,” she jests.

Zanne’s favourite Christmas song is “O,

Holy Night” and since she only gets to perform these songs once a year, she tries to make the most of it.

Before Classical Christmas, Zanne will be touring the Southern Cape with her new cabaret, Zaza en die Kunstenar with Niël Rademan, but she’ll be performing another Christmas concert with Hanneli Rupert and Zorada Temmingh at La Motte wine estate where they’ve recently built a chapel with an organ.

On Thursday 18 December she’ll be performing with the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra to raise funds for children who want to study music.

“This time of the year is hectic and I love it,” Zanne says.

Fans might be interested to see what she’ll be wearing on stage, as Zanne was named one of Sarie magazine’s ten most stylish South African women earlier this year, but the singer has a very simple view on style.

Opera examines our baggage Cape Town Opera will be presenting Argento’s Postcard from Morocco in collaboration with the UCT Opera School at the Artscape Theatre from Wednesday 19 to Sunday 23 November.

As advised in Surplus Communication Number Four, the Trustees have submitted the proposed project plan to the Financial Services Board to complete a Surplus Apportionment Scheme (detailing how the surplus is to be distributed amongst eligible stakeholders).

The Actuary appointed by the Fund to assist the Fund with its Surplus Apportionment has analysed the data required for the surplus calculations and has requested that the administrator of the Fund provides additional data in order to complete the surplus apportionment calculations.

Since most of the data required were not stored electronically as the data is required from January 1980, the administrator is in the process of extracting the data from paper records which has significantly lengthened the process of finalising the data for the surplus apportionment.

There are six main points to understand at this stage: 1. The process is going to take a long time to complete. This is not the fault of the Trustees or the Administrator of the Fund, but simply due to the complexity of all the required steps, as prescribed in legislation. It is not possible at this stage to give an indication of when the process will be completed.

2. It is unlikely that there will be much money, if any, to distribute to active Fund members as former members who did not receive both their and the Employer's contributions when they left the Fund have to be paid before any surplus can be awarded to active members.

3. No cash payments can be made to anyone who is still an active Fund member.

4. No payments will be made until the required approvals from the authorities have been obtained and the surplus process is completed. As the surplus process will not be completed this year no payments to any potentially eligible past members will be done this year.

5. Once the surplus apportionment process has been completed every past member who has registered with the Fund will receive a letter from the Fund advising them whether they have qualified for a surplus benefit or not.

6. Similarly every active Fund member will also be advised by the Fund in writing as to whether they will benefit from the surplus apportionment or not.

estern Province golfer Vanessa Smith celebrated her fifth national victory when she lifted the South African Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship title with an impressive down-to-the-wire performance at Irene Country Club on Wednesday (5 November).

The Milnerton mid-amateur took the lead with an opening 74, but registered an unsatisfactory 84 in the second round that cut her eight shot advantage to just four strokes.

But Smith made the trip to Pretoria a memorable one when she showed the chasing pack her heels with a closing 76 to seal a runaway nine stroke victory in the Championship Division with a winning total of 14over-par 236.

Smith won the SA Junior Open and the SA Women’s Amateur Match Play in 2000. The same year, she lifted the Jackie Mercer Trophy as the leading amateur in the SA Women’s Open and the following year, won the SA Women’s Open in her rookie pro season.

No mistakes “I still had a four shot lead, but I knew I would have to limit my mistakes in the final round. Liezl (Smit) and Jane (Mackenzie) came at me hard on the front nine, but by the time we reached the turn, I was pretty confident that I could win it.

Gauteng North’s Piret Vilborn claimed a home victory in the C-Division. The Centurion golfer closed with 35 points to lift the title with 90 points. Vilborn finished five points clear of North West’s Janine Meyburgh, who collected 33 points in the final round to vault to second on her own.

he stench of human waste and rotting garbage hangs heavily in the heat.

With flies buzzing lazily around faeces, children use an empty beer crate as a makeshift car just a couple of meters away.

Years of refuse is scattered around the tiny community of illegal dwellers, who live just a few hundred meters away from Happy Valley in Blouberg Dunes.

Sporadic pockets of human settlements are well hidden in the lush vegetation on national department of public works (DPW) land.

Just over a kilometre to the west and to the south, people sit in comfortable houses, completely oblivious to the human plight on their doorstep.

Dire situation Their main concern is the increase in crime, supposedly directly related to the informal residents living in Blouberg Dunes.

TygerBurger and sector 1 community police forum chairperson Barrie Jarrett visited one of these dwellings last week, and the undeniable fact is that the humanitarian situation in what is known as Tokkietown, is dire.

The tiny community of about 20 people named the informal settlement Tokkietown, apparently a reference to the drug tik. One of the squatters claim his family have been living there for two years.

According to Jarrett, the residents recently received eviction notices from DPW. If this is true, it leaves their future as dull as the colours of the faded Democratic Alliance election poster used to stop a wall from leaking.

FROM PAGE 1 At the time of writing, DPW had more than 100 hours to answer the eight questions asked by TygerBurger and in the process missed two of this newspaper’s deadlines.

Despite receiving the questions midday on Thursday, they only started giving attention to them on Tuesday morning, more than 10 hours after the first deadline.

Reaching out The only information coming from DPW at the time of going to print was that the people living in the informal settlement were removed “a long time ago”, so according to them there is no Tokkietown.

DPW therefore “only now concern themselves with Happy Valley”.

Sihle Ngobese, spokesperson for Western Cape minister of social development, Albert Fritz, says they have contact with this group of residents after they were invited in July by the Concerned Residents of Blouberg (CROB) group.

“After an assessment of the situation by our social workers, the team embarked on a door-to-door exercise to reach out to the residents of the informal dwelling, and of-

fered services to those who had expressed the desire for assistance.

“The key services sought were in assisting many of the residents to reconnect with family and relatives, and to verify if any child protection services were required. The department prioritised rendering assistance to the children who were found at this site,” said Ngobese.

To this effect, 11 families were assessed on 15 July and they were apparently all found to have family in Atlantis and reported they came to Happy Valley so they could be closer to job opportunities.

“Among the 11 families, only two families were found to be living with their children.

Social workers from the department, with assistance from the local councillor, assisted in relocating the children from the two families to Atlantis,” he said.

If the children were relocated, then they must have returned to Tokkietown to live in squalor.

According to Ngobese, the team of social workers returned for a follow-up visit on 5 November (surprisingly on the very same day TygerBurger was there).

According to the home’s manager, Alet Bosman, it was a sight to see the dimunitive King drilling holes in the wall like a professional.

The Springbok Scout Award is the highest honour a scout can get, given to scouts who change communities for the better.

“It takes quite long (to get the award),” laughs King.

“You can start at around the age of 11 and must complete it before you’re 18.”

Numerous steps need to be completed before earning the award.

“It ranges from doing survival courses, first aid, map reading and so forth. I’ve got one thing left to do, which is my hike during the last week of November in Groot Winterhoek. It is about 47 km,” she says.

Even though King is very happy to soon qualify for the award, this isn’t the reason she’s helped those in need.

“We were all rejuvenated and energised by the change we made at Eric Miles,” she says.

Bosman said King had to work 40 hours, but “definitely” worked longer than that.

“She is an amazing kid and so mature!

Her leadership skills are amazing and she is the keenest worker I have ever come across,” exclaims Bosman.

Humanitarian response Ngobese says they will remain in contact with the dwellers through their Metro North regional office and be available if any further assistance is needed.

“Who will help us?” asks one of the residents.

They have been approached by many different departments, councillors and members of the community, but their disconsolate cries for help remain unanswered.

Jarrett visits the dwellers regularly in his Community Policing Forum and private capacities.

On the one hand he responds to the objections from the residents in sector 1 and helps safeguard them against crime that seemingly originates from Tokkietown on Erf 1117, and on the other hand he hears the children cries and does what he can from a humanitarian perspective.

“Whose responsibility is it to care for them?” asks Jarrett.

“Who will find them alternative accommodation? What is to become of the children?

It simply cannot go on like this,” he concludes.

Interruption of water supply on west coast Atlantis, Table View, Parklands, Bloubergstrand, Melkbosstrand, Duynefontein, Klipheuwel, Mikpunt and Contermanskloof might have very little water pressure today (Wednesday) between 07:00 and 17:00.

The city’s water and sanitation department will temporarily shut down its Voëlvlei water treatment plant near Gouda to allow Eskom to conduct scheduled maintenance on the electrical infrastructure.

This will result in water supply to the bulk water pipeline being disrupted.

In a statement released by the city, it assured residents that effort will be made to ensure sufficient water is stored in the bulk reservoirs, but low water pressure and interruptions to the water supply are inevitable if high demand is experienced during this period.

In a landslide victory, the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Grose won with 98.93%.

Her closest rival, Henrik Sackson of the African National Congress, only managed to get 56 people to vote for him.

There were just over 19 000 registered voters, but only 5 217 people turned up to cast their ballot for their next ward councillor.

Grose is replacing previous councillor Marissa Jansen van Vuuren, who was relieved of her duties on 11 August following disciplinary proceedings.

An avid devourer of knowledge, one of Shaun’s extra-mural activities involves working in their school library. Participating in an OCC for the first time, he was exhilarated to be on the beach and learning so much whilst having fun.

The next OCC is scheduled for 08:00 on Saturday (15 November), meeting at the MyCiti bus stop in the parking area at Eden on the Bay. OCCs will continue every second Saturday through the summer, including the holiday period. Youth from Table View/Melkbosstrand interested in conservation and meeting like-minded people, are welcome.

he third Friends of Blaauwberg Conservation Area (FoBCA) Youth Oystercatcher Count (OCC) for this season took place in wonderful beach-walking weather recently.

Around midway between Eden on the Bay and Melkbosstrand, the count was only two oystercatchers, and a “by-count” of a dead seal. However, the final total oystercatcher count for the day was 57.

Youth who joined teacher Heinz Geiger and Blaauwberg Nature Reserve’s conservation student Dale Slabbert, were Sarah Metelerkamp and Shaun Nothard, both from Elkanah High School.

Sarah, who has responsibility for her school’s Oystercatcher Project (under the umbrella of the school’s environmental activities portfolio), said one of the first things participants learn during the walks, is that oystercatchers don’t catch oysters at all,

Sugar test: Table View Lions Club, in conjunction with Torga Optical and Pick n Pay Pharmacy, offered free provisional eye test screening, blood pressure and sugar level testing at the Table View Shopping Centre’s Farmer’s Day Market recently. The queue was non­stop for the sugar level and blood pressure testings.
