Mask drive for hotspot schools Edu-Mthombo visited Silverleaf Primary School in Dunoon on Friday, 12 June as part of their mask donation drive to collect masks for schools in the hotspot areas in Cape Town. Youth decorate CTICC KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels Learners at Rallim Preparatory School in Sunningdale drew rainbows to decorate a Covid-19 field hospital set up at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) after admitting its first patients on Monday 9 June. This idea, called the “Rainbow Initiative”,
was sparked by a parent, Nicola Lochner, who wanted to do something to brighten up the quarantine hospitals. According to Ulrike Kuschke from the provincial department of transport and public works, the school approached the department via the deputy mayor’s office and accepted the offer to produce a drawing for each of the 862 beds. “One of the mothers at the school proposed
the idea after watching a documentary on the Ebola virus and its impact on, and resulting social disconnection of patients. The rainbows at the CTICC Hospital of Hope have brought big smiles to the faces of patients and staff, as well as raising awareness among citizens big and small, old and young. “There are 338 new beds at Brackengate that will come on stream early in July and potentially another 800 to 1 000 beds else-
