Cleanup approach inspires REYANA STEYN

Plans are in the pipeline for the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) to potentially be rolled out across Cape Town into other areas which are problematic. This was highlighted on Thursday when a meeting was held at Radio Tygerberg in Parow to give people an overview on the progress as well as discuss the way forward on how they can make things better in Parow, Bellville and Goodwood. The VRCID has had a zero tolerance approach since its formation on 1 August 2012. The members ensure property safety, cleaner streets and puts a stop to loitering at businesses, making it more convenient for residents. “We are looking at future investments, a safe, clean and caring area, the extension of CID boundaries, high rise buildings; a pleasant shopping experience for clients, a well managed public space and pedestrianisation of certain streets,” says

Dereck Bock, chief operations officer of the VRCID. “Since the CID has been formed there has been many changes in the areas. “In the beginning it was a nightmare to address the prostitution, crime and homelessness, but now there has been a drop in the crime rates since the establishment. “Areas have also been cleaned and weapons and drugs have been confiscated,” he said. Bock added that another challenge was that the staff put in many extra hours without payment. “The guys work seven days a week and average 60 hours overtime without pay. We have people in the area phoning us instead of the police when there is crime in the area. We even get criticised, but I think we are winning the war.” Hardus Zevenster, chairperson of the VRCID and CEO of Radio Tygerberg, says it’s important that people take ownership of their communities. “We need everyone to play their part. .
