Chaos erupted at the Parow Park flats over the weekend when gangsters allegedly terrorised the residents in the complex. A group of men, some of whom also reside at the flats, were allegedly armed with bricks, bottles, axes and knives and walked around the area on Sunday ready to cause havoc. The men were called by some residents after an alleged fight broke out between two young men at Parow Park on Thursday. Police were called to the scene by distraught residents who say they feared for their lives. The community gathered in front of the housing office on Monday
with a petition demanding that the residents involved be put out of the complex. One resident, Rene Hudsonberg, says she was shocked when she saw the men armed with weapons. “The fighting started on Thursday when my son thought that one of them was his friend and spoke to him. He apologised, but later that day they beat him up.” She says police were called and then the matter seemed to be under control until Sunday when a group of armed men came into the complex to allegedly finish what they had started. “They then threatened our whole family and started throwing bricks,” she says. Other residents then came to
their aid and tried to stop the situation from spiralling out of control, but before they knew it, bricks were being thrown in their direction. Police were called again and three people were arrested. Another resident, Shariefa Khan, says she has been living at Parow Park for years, and has never see anything like this. “We tried to keep the peace and then one woman came and pointed her hand in my face as if she wanted to fight with me. We don’t want to live like this. Here are young children who could have also been hurt in the process,” she says. Antoinette Stander says they urgently need answers and want the matter sorted out. “We cannot live in fear like this.”

Annelie du Toit, chairperson of the Parow Park Committee, says they are trying to live a peaceful life and raise their children and now they are faced with this. Ashraf Slamdien, from the Parow Park housing department addressed the residents on Monday and said that they will look into the matter. “We can’t just put people out of their homes. There are processes and procedures which need to be followed. We are however glad that the community has come to us with their concerns so we can see what we will do. We will have security patrol the area to ensure that no other incidents of violence take place.” Police will also be patrolling the area to help ensure peace is kept.
