esse Hess, the 18-year-old University of the Western Cape (UWC) student who was found murdered in an apartment in Parow, is more than just a name. The teen, whom according to media reports also served as a Sunday school teacher and youth leader, joins the increasing number of slain women in Cape Town over recent weeks. The bodies of Jesse and her step-grandfather, Chris Lategan (85), was found on Friday 30 August at the Beaumont apartments in Victoria Street, Parow. Recently the police also discovered the body of Meghan Cremer (30) at a sand mine near Philippi. Three men, Jeremy Sias (21), Charles Daniels (39) and Shiraaz Jaftha (34) were apprehended for their alleged involvement in the murder. Late last month the dismembered body of Lynette Volschenk was found at her apartment in Loevenstein, Bellville. Kyle Ruiters (21) was arrested for her murder. Leighandre Jegels (25), a female boxing champion, was also gunned down in East London on Friday 30 August. Most recently the body of Uyinene Mrwetyana (19), a University of Cape Town student, was discovered in Khayelitsha after she was murdered in Claremont where she visited the post office. A 42-year-old appeared in the Wynberg magistrate’s court on Monday in connection with her death. Lt-Col André Traut, provincial police spokesperson, says the murder case of Jesse and her step-grandfather is still under investigation and no one has been arrested. The death of the UWC theology student had sent shockwaves through Cape Town. Many people also expressed their shock and dismay on social media. One of those who paid tribute to the young woman was Aden Thomas, breakfast host on Heart FM, who spoke to her shortly before her death. Jesse had won a prize on the radio

station when she was interviewed by Thomas. UWC, where she was enrolled as a first-year student, also expressed their unhappiness. “The University of the Western Cape community is grieving the untimely death of one of its students, Jesse Hess. It is a profoundly sad time for the university. The university expresses its condolences to the family and fellow students,” says Gasant Abarder, campus spokesperson. Fellow students who may need professional and confidential counselling and psychological services can contact the university’s centre for student support services (CSSS), he says. For additional support students are also encouraged to contact the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag). In collaboration with CSSS, Sadag provides a 24hour toll-free counselling helpline to all UWC students. Call 0800 222 333.
