All is not well in the suburb nestled between the N1, N7 and Bosmansdam road. Summer Greens is seemingly on the fast track to anarchy.

The City of Cape Town cannot get on top of the myriad number of shops being operated from homes and in some instances a single property is being letted and sub-letted to more than 20 people.

The seriousness of the situation

was brought to TygerBurger’s attention by the chairperson of the Summer Greens Resident’s Association (SGRA), Dolf Colyn.

While driving along the main road, Summer Greens Drive, CocaCola billboards are never far in between.

Ward councillor Joy McCarthy is well aware of this growing concern.

“As many of the residents are unemployed, they start ‘businesses’, which are often convenient covers for drug dealing. Some sell secondhand clothes, fruit and vegetables

from the garage or set up hairdressing salons. Some even run panelbeating ‘chop shops’ in their garages!” McCarthy says.

According to McCarthy, she and the SGRA have gone on walkabouts in the suburb and identified the many illegal businesses.

“This information has been submitted via a land-use complaint notice (C3) to the Planning Department, who are slowly working their way through the list. It is time-consuming and does not get quick results, but it is the only legal route.”

However, Colyn says that this system is inadequate, since one business could close as a result, but then the next week a new business has opened in its place.

Another worrying development is the sub-letting of the already small properties.

There are two houses in Summer Greens Drive which are being subletted to about 10 families.

A healthy state of emotional being is key to being healthy and happy in life.

It is a belief that Neil Johnson, a local certified Reiki practitioner and clinical hypnotherapist, subscribes to without fail.

“We are just a bag of emotions. What we need to learn in this life is to process negative emotions so that we can get rid of them, so that they don’t do damage to our bodies,” Neil says.

Negative emotions which more often than not originate from a low self esteem are the root of nearly all relationship problems.

“Negative energy is what causes illness and ailments. We generate a lot of negative energy in our lives. Problems in relationships and circumstances result in illness which exacerbates stress and relationship problems. The vast majority of which end up in divorce,” Neil explains.

Finding a solution for homes breaking up in this manner seems paramount in Table View which is said to have among the highest concentration of divorced families in the country.

Over the last six years Neil has interviewed more than 200 women who are divorced.

“I established that the majority of marriages ended because of emotional, physical or

He also complains about the number of babies next door, which bother him long into the night.

Colyn reckons that the local social structure is under severe threat.

McCarthy admits that the area has deteriorated over the last 10 years due to neglect and the economic downturn.

“The latter resulted in many homes being sold in execution and being snapped up by a local estate agent group who market these homes at exorbitant rentals, attracting and permitting multiple family tenancy, one per room and some in the garage,” she says.

Council is trying to address these matters, but it takes time and with each passing day the suburb is falling into further disarray.

McCarthy is committed to turning the tide, as there are plenty of plans for the suburb.

She says that Emerald Way will be receiving attention from the Parks Department this financial year to be beautified and “hopefully” another outdoor exercise area will be set up. This specific area will also be fenced – funds permitting.

Eventually the IRT will pass right through Summer Greens and carry residents directly to the station in Century City.

Colyn concludes by emphasising that the community itself can make a difference in the growing problem of crime by joining the neighbourhood watch.

Local communities should get back to embracing individuals that are different and play a role in making them contributing members of society.

This is the opinion of Arina Swart, principal of the Aqua Circle of Friends Creative Learning Centre in Melkbosstrand.

It was while working with three very special girls as a remedial teacher that Arina identified the need for a place of learning for children with neurological and emotional problems.

“I realised we need a place with adjustable methods where every child’s needs would be met individually and so Aqua Circle of Friends was born,” Arina says.

She opened the school for children with specific needs in 2010.

“Most of these children come from mainstream schools where they were classified as unteachable, but by putting them in a different environment they are capable of learning,” she says.

“These days children are grouped together. If you have these strengths you belong to this group. If you don’t talk or talk too much you belong to these groups.

“Because of this grouping idea, I cannot benefit from what you, as say, a stronger person, can offer me,” Arina explains.

She says the children at the school are taught through application.

“Where the mainstream policy is to teach the science or academics of life we focus on the application of life. For instance we teach them to cook and through that process we teach things like maths, personal hygiene and science,” Arina says.

This same principal was applied on Friday morning when the children were introduced to the concept of planting a vegetable garden.

She drummed up some support from her friends and the idea became a reality.

Arina says this type of support from members of the community is what is needed to help such children grow and prosper.

“This vegetable garden is small but is the start of a vision that I have. My idea is to eventually have a piece of land just outside Melkbos that can be turned into a kibbutz.

Most of these children will never be able to work for someone else but they will be able to earn an income for themselves by producing organic vegetables that can then be sold in town,” Arina says.

“That is how we lived years ago and I think that at the end of the day, that is what is going to save us as a people,” she says.

Two in 419 scam bust scams and lose thousands of US Dollars. The Nigerian 419 Scam is currently the world’s largest scam in terms of monetary losses.

Wikipedia says the number “419” refers to the article of the Nigerian Criminal Code dealing with fraud.

This scam usually begins with a letter or email purportedly sent to a selected recipient but actually sent to many, making an offer that would result in a large payoff for the victim.

The email’s subject line often says something like “From the desk of barrister (name)”, “Your assistance is needed”, and so on.

The details vary, but the usual story is that a person, a government or bank employee, knows of a large amount of unclaimed money which he cannot access directly, without the “help” of the scam victim.

Police have arrested two Nigerian suspects for fraud after suspecting that they had been involved in a 419 scam.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Col André Traut, the two men, aged 30 and 42, were arrested in a Milnerton hotel last week Thursday.

He elaborates: “Investigations led police to the hotel after the suspicion arose that the suspects were targeting victims abroad. The suspects’ laptops, cellular phones, cash to the tune of R5 900 and fraudulent bank letterheads were confiscated.”

According to the South African Police Service’s website the Nigerian 419 scam is currently flooding the email boxes of innocent internet users and website users.

A man who tried to help a fatally wounded woman after she was hit by a vehicle on the N7 was seriously injured when another vehicle hit him.

The tragic incident happened last week Saturday at 22:55 on the N7.

According to Bothasig police spokesperson, Const Noloyiso Rwexana, both vehicles failed to stop after the two incidents.

Says Vella: “We will be dropping off pamphlets at various business parks in the area.”

TygerBurger wrongly reported last week in the article entitled “Truly selfless give hope to needy” that the Lighthouse Project has donated over half a million rand to Tygerberg Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust.

They have, in fact, donated this money to the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital.

The current project construction is set to be completed at the end of September this year, with the following two projects to be completed by April and June next year.

‘Fuel cost must come down now’

High tech toys: Seal College, a non­profit organisation situated in Milnerton which cares for intellectu­ ally disabled children, recently en­ joyed a “technology day” at Hirsch’s Milnerton. The college has been in existence for 14 years and through parent support, dedication and fund­ raising they are always striving to give and provide the best for the chil­ dren. Hirsch’s staff treated them to a tour of the store which educated and wowed them as the latest tech­ nology in television and sound was demonstrated. Debby Opperman, the administrator at Seal College, says: “We all had a wonderful time and es­ pecially enjoyed the interaction with the staff. The children were treated with warmth and respect and we ap­ preciate this.”

The almost continual increase of petrol prices are of great concern and local ward councillor and chairperson of De Grendel Subcouncil, James Vos, is urging national government to help ease the burden.

“The fact of the matter is that these price increases will affect the price of goods across the country.

“South Africans, already struggling with rapidly rising living costs, will be forced to pay higher taxi fares, and increased transportation costs will push up the cost of food over time,” says Vos. Over the last 10 years, the fuel price has, on average, increased by 11 % per year. This is far above the official inflation rate which has hovered around 6 %.

According to Vos there are two key ways in which government can smooth out the impact of fuel price increases over time; and to even lower the price of fuel.

“There must be a comprehensive review of all levies and taxes on the price of fuel to determine which ones, in which quantity, are justified in the light of the substantial impact they have on the economy.

“And secondly, the Central Energy Fund must re-examine the formula it uses to calculate the basic fuel price,” he explains.

Vos concludes: “The Democratic Alliance believes that, given the significant economic pressure on our people, this formula must be reviewed as a matter of utmost urgency to help South Africans maintain and improve their standard of living.”

Enter the computer age LEON STEENKAMP

A local primary school has once again benefited from the social invest initiative of a large multinational company.

The Marconi Beam Primary School in Joe Slovo Park is now the proud owner of a brand new computer centre and an improved library thanks to the support of Mars Africa.

Mars is a global company specialising in the production of chocolate, food and pet food products.

Representatives from Mars Africa whose South African head office is situated in Montague Gardens, and 10 ambassadors from Mars offices located in seven different countries around the world, visited the school last week.

The Mars employees were all from the company’s IT departments and helped establish the new computer centre at the school.

“We have trained some 600 students and 31 teachers since we have been here,” said Nathan Levey from Mars Africa.

“Yesterday we took the children outside with some digital cameras and today we are teaching them to download pictures onto the computer,” he said, standing in the classroom with 15 brand new computers.

“The kids were very attentive, it was good to see them running around with the cameras,” he said.

The children were also treated with new uniforms.

“Thank you, especially for the clothing for these children. Some are needy, some don’t have mothers, some come from homes where not one of us can imagine a child can be rai-

sed,” Plaatjies said, stressing the meagre state of some of the pupils’ home lives.

Ntozanele Mani, a parent member of the school governing body, was equally thankful for all the help.

“Education is the key that can open any door. If you know how to read you can go far in this country,” Mani said. Last year the school was also a beneficiary of the company’s corporate social investment initiative with a vegetable garden being established at the school.

Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, was one of the many guests to don a mask during the luxurious evening.

She went on to say that the tragedy isn’t those people who Iris House supports, but rather the many hundreds the organisation are not yet able to support. Funds are needed to expand the reach of the organisation, so functions like these have far-reaching effects.

Iris House’s Sue van der Linde says it was an evening to remember. “The significant awareness factor is fantastic. Having the premier there was just the cherry on top!” she mused.

Van der Linde pulled out all the stops to orchestrate a well-organised function. During dinner, entertainment included Sterling EQ and dancers from the Extreme Dance Studio.

Our mayor must stand her ground It’s an impossible situation. On the one hand there’s the pretty damning picture about rising fuel prices and subsequent higher food prices and all the other negatives, like retrenchments, that come with it.

On the other, we have our not-so-youthful ANC youth league, that simply demands land, electricity, houses, and Helen Zille’s resignation – and they want it now.

At Monday’s protest in Cape Town, some of the “youths” got it all wrong with placards about the war in Palestine...

The youth league has been threatening Patricia de Lille for a while now to make the city “ungovernable”. In their attempts thus far, property has been damaged, people have been seriously injured, even killed. De Lille said she wouldn’t tolerate it, and stood her ground thus far.

Obviously this is not good for our economy. Investors hold on to their money, salary increases are decreasing, while living costs – as well as tax pressure to support the growing number of the unemployed – are forever on the up.

We as citizens of a beautiful country and great city are on our own. We have to fend for ourselves, as promises from the senior ranks are vastly different from action.

We will simply have to do the impossible to survive, let alone live. And may Mayor De Lille keep on sticking to her guns.

I welcome the new law in the Cape which prevents you from using your cellphone whilst driving unless you have a handsfree kit or you face the consequence of your cellphone being confiscated for 24 hours plus a R500 fine.

My problem is that this new law must apply to all road users, including traffic officers.

I recently drove past a female traffic official chatting away on her cellphone (holding the phone to her ear) on the N1 outbound.

I first thought whilst going past her in the middle lane (she was in the left lane) that I was imagining it, but I actually slowed down and waited for her to pass me and as true as bob she was still chatting away.

I just feel that she not only endangered her own life, but mine too as well as other road users. Unfortunately for me but luckily for her, I was alone in the car otherwise I would have asked my daughter to take a photo of her chatting away.

The details of the vehicle she was driving are GVY 739G, B26 (number on side of the car).

Thereafter she took the Old Oak turn-off from the N1 and then left into Frans Conradie in the direction of the Hypermarket in Brackenfell. I carried on with Old Oak to-

wards Old Paarl road, as this is the route I travel on a daily basis.

I did contact the telephone number 021 931 1646, that is reflected on the traffic vehicle she was driving, on Tuesday afternoon when I got home to give them the details, but I suppose nothing has been said to her, never mind a warning for breaking the law.

Teach recycling to youth We live in West Beach and at first the recycling bin at 7-Eleven was taken away with no warning or message or alternatives.

After driving around and asking friends we found one at West Coast Village. Then the same thing happened. Yesterday I drove to the school off Porterfield Road (which is quite a distance if you take fuel cost and carbon into consideration).

As a result something like taking your bag for shopping has also stopped (the broken window theory). We really want to do our

part in reducing the mess but it does not seem that the municipality is taking this seriously at all.

If the awareness around recycling is not raised and constantly fed and the new generation not educated from the start we will soon live in the bin we are creating.

A great example is Melkbosstrand where three bags for recycling per week is delivered and everybody gladly complies.

I have been unable to acquire any information regarding the criteria by which the participants are judged.

No one has been able to answer the many questions which arise from the participation of the physically disadvantaged. Perhaps there is a reader, or for that matter, your reporting staff, who can supply the answers to the many questions now being raised.

Does a person have to be physically handicapped to participate?

Does a person with an arm missing (or both) have to compete against persons who have a leg, or both amputated? Do swimmers with one arm compete against those with one leg?

Do the mentally retarded also qualify for the Paralympics? There are so many questions.

Intellectual Disability: Athletes with a significant impairment in intellectual functioning and associated limitations in adaptive behaviour.

Wheelchair: Athletes with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities that require them to compete in a wheelchair.

Visually Impaired: Athletes with visual impairment ranging from partial vision, sufficient to be judged legally blind, to total blindness.

Les Autres: Athletes with a physical disability that does not fall strictly under one of the other five categories, such as dwarfism, multiple sclerosis or congenital deformities of the limbs.

The seven guys from Cape Town stand motionless in the glaring lights. They can feel the anticipation of the Las Vegas audience pulsating through their veins and then...

The controlled adrenaline precipitates two minutes of coherence and control, which leaves the crowd in “da-bomb” shock.

Yo Cape Town! Take a minute to salute this group of dancers so sick they have the world at their feet.

The deadly Durbanville hip-hop crew, Brooklyn, is the fifth best in the world after they recently competed in the Hip-Hop International Championship in Vegas.

Watching them pulling their perfect moves on stage leaves one absolutely dumbfounded.

Talent – of which they have plenty – is of course not enough. So it’s a good thing they didn’t rely solely on this.

Months of practise and a steely determination ensured an irresistible performance.

The members, Hoze “Big Po” Jonas (Durbanville), Lyle “Lyl Po” Jonas, Robert “Mr Lyrical” Bezuidenhout, Ashwin “Pipes” Cillier, Reveno “Muis” van der Merwe, Graham “Grey Seaun” Swartz and Nathan “Nate” Adriaanse did their country proud.

Hoze is the choreographer and is smoking hot, as the crew’s manager, Crisanne van Rensburg, explains: “He is the actual reason that drew me to Brooklyn. When you watch them it feels like you are dancing. You can feel each person’s motivation and passion for what they do. With his choreography he can give you exactly what you want. You sit and wonder how he comes up with these moves, but it just comes naturally to him!”

Hoze and Crisanne came to TygerBurger’s offices recently and spoke about their latest and greatest achievement.

This isn’t the first time the crew went to compete in the World Championship in Las Vegas, but it is the highest they’ve ever been placed.

The preliminary rounds saw 72 groups who qualified from all over the world compete against each other and then 30 were picked. Brooklyn was placed very high in the pre-lims and the semi-finals, so they thoroughly deserved to make the finals, which Hoze describes as the Olympics of Hip-Hop. When he talks about the experience his eyes light up. It is clear that he lives for dancing – much like all those who competed.

The eighth member, Alston “Mr Green” Louw from Bothasig broke his leg in an accident just before the Nationals, so his disappointment of missing out knows no bounds.

Hoze will most likely feel the same next year when he might have to stay home along with the rest of the group. They have to raise their own money to enter the competition, so if they cannot get a sponsor then they will still be paying off their current loan.

Hoze also raises money by teaching children, young adults, parents and even grandmothers and fathers to get down on the dance floor. It will obviously take grannies a while before they can “B-Boy” with flips, head spins, up-rock and down-rock.

“When I was 15 years old I started coaching,” says Hoze. “We are currently having auditions every Monday and Tuesdays for junior and varsity age groups.”

Alfistis gather for Jnr Rally All Alfa enthusiasts can gear up for the annual junior rally that will be hosted by the Cape Alfa Romeo Club this coming Sunday (2 September).

Drivers will depart at 10:30 (advised to be at the starting point at 10:00) from the Cape Alfa Romeo Killarney Club House at the Killarney Race Track.

The run will follow a pre-arranged route schedule where participants will need to check in at various check points along the route.

The run will end at the Cape Alfa Romeo Killarney Club House again at around 13:00.

Participants should bear in mind that all speed limits must be strictly adhered to at all times as this is a fun event for

the whole family.

There will be no questions and answers that need to be completed along the route as the event is all about driving a set route within an allocated time.

Drivers who arrive too early or too late at the check points will incur penalties.

The least number of penalties with the closest time will win the event. As usual there will be prizes for the first three drivers.

A bring and braai will be held after the rally at the club house and stand situated on the inside of the Killarney Race Track.

A host of Alfa Romeo cars will be seen on the roads this coming weekend when participants in the annual Alpha Romeo Junior Rally take to the streets.

Stars for youth choir

Several local artists will join in a community effort and perform on Saturday 8 September from 19:00 in the Durbanville Town Hall to raise funds for the SA Youth Choir (SAYC).

The artists that will be performing include French chanteuse Dr Daniele Pascal, Elle Amor, local rock legend Rupert Mellor and blues rocker Charlie King.

Others are Annelie Herbst and the legendary rockers, The Tomboys.

There will also be a guest appearance by the SAYC. Various fun items will also be auctioned.

Durbanville is the capital of this choir, which brings together talented young singers and gives them the opportunity to excel on artistic, social and scholastic levels.

Since 2005 SAYC has establish itself as a world class choir and has won several international awards and prizes.

This event is arranged by Theresa Uys, councillor of Ward 21, and Eugene Lebreton, committee member responsible for the arts and culture portfolio of ward 21.

Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel and Spa in the centre of Cape Town has made a serious commitment to skills development and upliftment in Du Noon.

As part of their Mandela Day community call to action they invited the public to donate fabric and knitted squares which were then made into quilts by the ladies from the project “Du Noon Design”.

Cheerfully using their sewing machines in the hotel atrium they completed 20 quilts on Mandela Day from the donated squares. The public response was so overwhelming that many more squares were taken back to their workshop for completion giving the group more opportunities to earn.

General manager of the hotel Desmond O’Connor, has reaffirmed his long-term support in assisting these feisty ladies. With his eye on skills development, O’Connor has seen the opportunities for the group in making products for the hotel. To fast-track the process he recently donated an over-locking machine to the group.

“By assisting small home industries such as Du Noon Design, we can hopefully start to stem the demise of the SA clothing and manufacturing industry. These innovative ladies are just one group amongst many trying to make a living using their sewing talents and big business should be supporting them. Buying locally made goods as will be supplied by Du Noon Design to the hotel, makes economic sense as it is one way to create jobs.

“The ethos of the hotel is giving back to local communities and in this way we are taking the group one step forward,” he says.

Sibongile Mbatha, founder of Du Noon Design, was overwhelmed when the machine was handed over and said that this now helps the group to make their products even more professional.

Idyllic scenes at pottery shop JILL PEPER

In 1948, after suffering the ordeal of internment in a Nazi concentration camp, Clifford Street brought his young wife out to South Africa to find restoration and emotional healing.

They bought a smallholding outside Durbanville alongside the Mosselbank River.

This was historically a place of rest because it was the site of the original Outspan used by travellers passing through the area.

Here the Streets set about raising a family and making a livelihood.

Because of the rich clay in the area, they started a pottery, making handcrafted pots and bowls.

This interesting business is still in operation today on its original site, and Vicky Street, (the Street’s daughter) still produces beautiful handcrafted pottery here, with the help of her farm workers.

She has put her own creative stamp onto all she produces, with beautiful bright colourful bowls and wall plates, some inscribed with inspirational scripture texts.

Vicky’s pottery and surrounds are inhabited by a surprising farmyard of co-existing creatures – chickens and kittens, cats and dogs,

donkeys and ponies – all mingle happily together here creating an almost surreal story-book environment. Vicky also runs a small general store selling farm-baked bread, free range eggs, jams and honey, plants and various other items.

The road passing by (the R302) is a busy one, linking Durbanville to Klipheuwel and Malmesbury, but the bright red signboards for Riverside Outspan invite you to pause on your way and call in.

’n Liefdevolle persoon wat altyd ander mense se lewens wou verryk. Dit is hoe Leon Hartshorne (58), die hoof van die Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum in Parow, onthou word deur almal wat hom geken het.

Die dood van Leon verlede Dinsdag nadat hy gediagnoseer is met longkanker, was ’n groot verlies vir sy vrou, Janette, en sy gesin, én vir klassieke musiekliefhebbers in Suid-Afrika en selfs in die buiteland. Honderde studente het in sy tyd deur die musieksentrum se deure beweeg. Baie van hulle het intussen nasionale en selfs internasionale aansien verwerf.

Mense uit alle vlakke van die lewe het gister (Dinsdag) by die NG kerk Kenridge saamgekom om hulde aan hom te bring. Sy gesin en vriende het ook ’n gedenkteken aangebring om sy lewe te vier. ’n Groep van agt harpspelers het ’n uitvoering ter ere van Leon by die begrafnis gelewer.

“Leon was ’n dromer en het altyd alles probeer om sy drome waar te maak,” vertel Janette. Hulle was amper 30 jaar getroud en sy sê dit was die beste tyd van haar lewe.

“Hy was altyd vol verrassings. Op Valentynsdag het twee vliegtuigkaartjies na Parys vir my by die huis gewag. Dit is net hoe hy was. Vir sy twee kinders was hy ’n verskriklike liefdevolle pappa, altyd trots op hulle en wou vir hulle die beste gee.”

Sy dink met heimwee aan al die herinneringe. “Hy het altyd die lekkerste kos gemaak en was die beste geselskap. Hy was ook lief vir lees. Ons het altyd gegrap dat hy ’n regte huishoender was. Hy was verskriklik lief vir kuns, musiek en om in sy tuin te werk – dit was terapeuties vir hom.”

Sy sê: “Ons mis hom. Hy het altyd ’n vuurtjie aangesteek en die hele gesin het lekker saamgekuier, maar ons weet hy is in ’n plek waar ons almal eendag sal wees. Dit is hoekom ons sy lewe wil vier.”

Die Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum het ’n studieleier met buitengewone eienskappe verloor. Leon was volkome gerig op die aktiwiteite van die sentrum.

Afgesien van sy pligte as skoolhoof en administrateur in kunstige beplanning en personeelontwikkeling, het hy ook opleiding gegee in klarinet, orkes- en ensemble en het hy selfs bygedra tot die verfraaiing van die sentrumgeboue en -gronde. Hy het dikwels sommer self sy hande in die grond gedruk.

Hy is gerespekteer as eksaminator oor die hele land en vir verskeie baanbrekersprojekte, soos die jaarlikse Hugo Lambrechtskonsertfees en die SAMRO-Hubert van der Spuy se nasionale musiekkompetisie.

Hilda Boonzaaier, ’n musiekonderwyser en baie goeie vriend van Leon, sê hy het ’n groot nalatenskap agtergelaat. “Hy was baie goed vir musiek in die algemeen. Hy het deure oopgemaak vir baie mense en studente. Hy het groot drome gehad en kon altyd mense kry om saam met hom te droom en die groter prentjie te sien.” Sy sê hy het baie wonderlike veranderinge by die musieksentrum aangebring en nooit die doel uit sig verloor om dit nog te verbeter nie. “Hy was ’n goeie persoon en ons mis hom.”

Full steam ahead for Haze LOUISA STEYL

About a year ago, he boarded the Idols train, and Mark Haze has been going full steam ahead ever since.

“The whole reason for me to enter was to further my career,” says the Durbanville singer, who came second in last year’s Idols competition.

And that’s exactly what happened. Mark says bookings for his band, known then as 12th Avenue, started picking up soon after MNet started broadcasting the ads for Idols.

The road to Idols was long and winding for the band that had been taken for a ride by previous man-

agement and despite hits on national radio stations, the band still had to work “day jobs” to get by.

“Idols has given me the confidence to know what I have,” says Mark, who came second by only 0.09 % of the votes.

“At no point did I expect to win,” he says, adding that he simply wanted people to remember his name.

Mark says towards the end of Idols, he realised he would never be able to just go back to his job, so after discussions with his wife, he decided to give being a full-time performer a go and resigned.

“That was pretty scary,” he says.

The band, 12th Avenue, decided to change their name to the Mark Haze band, because new fans were

now familiar with the band, and they signed a recording contract.

“It’s like a marriage,” Mark says of the band dynamics, explaining that everyone still have creative input to the final product.

“Nothing has changed, expect the name of the project,” he says.

“I’ve always thought they are the best band I could perform with.”

Mark’s first single, “Out of my head,” has already passed gold status and was the most downloaded song in South Africa for 2011 – in only three months.

Since then, he has released two new singles, “Wake up” and “Where angels fear to fly”, that are on high rotation on most major radio stations.

Feels like nineties again

Ninetiesmania is another fast-paced musical from Mike McCullagh and a celebration of all things 1990s.

The show runs from Friday 31 August through to 3 November, every Wednesday to Saturday at the GrandWest Roxy Revue Bar. Central to the show is Manny Herman, car mechanic by day and singer by night, who lightheartedly introduces the audience to many of the innovations, events, fashions and sounds of the period via screen projected images.

Local starlet, Bethany Dickson, from Table View, is part of the Nintiesmania cast.

Some might recognise her as the front-woman for White Collar Kiss.

While the band has taken a break, Bethany and her brother, Nathan,

are working on a new project they hope to take to the stage soon.

When she isn’t performing, Bethany teaches dance and drama at Elkanah House. “I find it fulfils a completely different side of my hunger for anything to do with the stage. I love working with children and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to invest in their lives in some way” she says.

Music of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Roxette, Nirvana, Shania Twain, Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Bon Jovi, MC Hammer, Alanis Morrisette, Vanilla Ice, Boyz to Men and The Spice Girls will be recreated on stage.

Tydlose reis in Afrikaans LOUISA STEYL

Neem ’n reis deur tyd op Radio Tydloos.

Dié is Bok Radio se splinternuwe musiekblyspel wat die storie van Afrikaans in Suid-Afrika vertel.

Die produksie sal van 15 September by Jamrockteater te sien wees, met ’n hele klomp groot plaaslike name op die verhoog.

“Dit vertel so bietjie die geskiedenis van Afrikaans,” verduidelik Wimpie van der Sandt, uitvoerende hoof van Bok Radio, wat ook ’n groot aandeel gehad het in die teks van die toneelstuk.

Hy sê hy wou al verlede jaar die produksies op die planke bring, maar het besluit om eerder te wag tot die stasie gevestig is.

“Ons het vanjaar besluit ons is reg daarvoor,” sê hy.

Die grootste deel van die teks is deur Wimpie, Natisha van der Sandt en Karlien Kruger geskryf.

Jeremy Quickfall sorg vir die musiek en

verwerkings, terwyl Louwtjie Rothman aan die rock-deel gewerk het.

Riku Latti het die musiek geskryf vir die “beginjare” van Afrikaans.

Ander name wat ook deel is van Radio Tydloos, is Shaun Klaasen, Marilee de Vries, Robyn Maree, Cindy-Ann Abrahams, Lino die Bruin Ou en Dillon Lerm.

Tropical Heat sal die musiek vir die produksie maak. Wimpie belowe ook dat dit ’n interaktiewe produksie sal wees.

Terwyl die akteurs op die verhoog is, sal daar altyd iets op die groot skerm agter hulle aangaan. Dan is daar die finale toneel, wat die vorm van ’n baie gewilde televisie-speletjieprogram uitmaak.

Radio Tydloos se tydsduur sal ongeveer twee ure wees en is van 15 tot 23 September te sien.

Wimpie sê hul beplan om dit met twee vertonings te verleng aangesien kaartjies al amper uitverkoop is.

A Ravensmead ensemble is gearing up to launch its debut gospel jazz album in Goodwood this weekend.

Members of the Heinrich Isaacs Ensemble (also known as H.I.E), describe themselves as an urban, gospel band with a jazz and R&B sound.

The band started in 2009, as the brainchild of Heinrich Isaacs, a well established Cape Town saxophonist.

He explains that in the beginning, they were simply a few friends jamming together, until he was approached by a fan, with the idea to establish a formal band.

The band now includes Divan Adams on keyboards, Lesley Canary on bass guitar, Reginald Pretorius on guitar and Warren Adams on drums.

Theresa Abrahams, Roxanne Francis, Natasha Groenewald and Trevor Abrahams all see to the vocals.

Heinrich says “the timing was just right” to work on their album, Forever Grateful,

now.

Their manager, Paul Davids explains that the band name was growing fast, and that even though they had toured extensively, they had nothing to leave behind.

“What was lacking was a marketing tool,” Paul says.

“Musically, there’s a variety from ballads to up-tempo songs,” Heinrich says of the CD. Paul explains that they wanted to open the album up to cater for all kinds of tastes. The album even features a rap and Heinrich singing a hymn, with nothing but a keyboard.

“People will be pleasantly surprised by the final product,” he says.

The album will be launched on Sunday 2 September at New Faith Church in Goodwood from 19:30. The launch will feature Chadleigh (Mr Africa) Gowar, Trevino Isaacs, Chrystal Swanson, Wayne Bosch and Jason Ward.

Kristin Bellingan, Jack Carlisle, Nicola de Pinto, Jason Howard, Jean Rabie, Stephen Rabie and Nina Rossouw, all from Table View and members of the Cybersmart swimming club, swam their hearts out and were very pleased with their performance at the gala. They had gained first­hand experience in competing in foreign waters, on national level, with the top swim­ mers in KZN. All of the swimmers achieved personal best times for most of the events they entered.

’n Stormsterk wind, deurdringende reenbuie en modderige velde is nou nie juis gerieflik en aanvaarbaar met interskolekragmetings nie – vir die spelers sowél as duisende toeskouers.

En as jou span boonop met ’n gelykop-uitslag gediend moet wees – soos die 3-3 in die derby tussen Stellenberg en Durbanville, asook die 17-17 in Bosmansdam se interskole-stryd teen Labori – dan word dit ’n dag wat jou skielik na die komende somer laat hunker.

Die Hoërskool Tygerberg kon in sy interskole-botsing darem wel deurskraap met ’n naelskraapse oorwinning van 14-10 oor Brackenfell.

Dit was veral die o.19 A-wedstryd tussen hierdie twee spanne wat Saterdag in haglike omstandighede gespeel moes word.

Die Brakke, wat ’n hele paar jaar gelede laas ’n oorwinning geproe het, sal maar tot volgende jaar moet wag om so iets te bewerkstellig.

Die spannende wedstryd by Stellenberg was wel drieloos, maar aan opwinding het dit geensins ontbreek nie.

Drie plaaslike atlete is na afloop van vanjaar se WP­landloopkampi­ oenskap in die WP­landloopspan opgeneem wat op 8 September in Amanzimtoti aan die SA kampioenskap gaan deelneem.
