T
he Milnerton flea market, one of Cape Town’s biggest markets, has opened its gates following a long period of closure due to the nationwide lockdown. The popular market saw many happy traders on Saturday, 13 June with regular customers lining up to gain entry. According to media liaison and public re-
lations officer of the Milnerton Informal Traders Association, Bruce Tait, traders have been waiting more than 60 days to sell their goods at the market, with many having suffered during the lockdown due to a lack of income. “The traders have welcomed this decision to open the market again, as many of them could not earn an income. The City of Cape Town has set strict safety protocols in place, with everyone having to wear a mask when
entering,” Tait said. The market followed a “no mask, no entry” rule, with everyone required to sanitise their hands at the gates before entering, and to have their temperature taken. Tait said that due to the market’s spacious grounds of 1.8 hectares, social distancing of stalls were easy to set up. “We have monitored the numbers in the market to make sure social distancing is maintained. The space is large. We have opened our gates at 07:00 on Satur-
day with safety protocols in place to provide the community with a safe and enjoyable shopping experience. All government safety protocols were followed,” he said. He said the market has approximately 250 vendors and about 65 casual vendors. In addition, Tait said that the lockdown had a severe impact on traders’ finances and the opening of the market will once again allow them to feed their families. V To page 8
