Really, better than me! Cassandra Smith jokingly com pares her matric results with that of her twin brother David who was among the top two achievers of Milnerton High School. Last year’s matricu lants swarmed to local schools for their final school exam re sults last week. Milnerton High School principal Paul Bes ner was overjoyed that the school achieved a 100 percent pass rate for the eighth year running. Full story on page 2. Photo: Leon Steenkamp

) Canal Walk’s Shimansky the target

Jewellery store heist ANDRÉ BAKKES

This year started badly for Shimansky Jewellery in Canal Walk when five armed suspects pulled off an audacious robbery and fled with several hundred thousand of rand of jewellery. According to Milnerton police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daphne Dell, the men robbed the store at 12:30 on 1 January.

Canal Walk CEO, Gavin Wood, elaborates: “Two of the suspects distracted the security guard that was positioned in the area close to the store and three entered the Shimansky store. The suspects who entered the store were armed and smashed one of the display cabinets, getting away with an undisclosed amount of jewellery. No shots were fired and no one was injured.” Says Dell: “The suspects fled on

foot and were noticed leaving Canal Walk in a white Honda. This vehicle was also reported stolen the previous week.” Apparently a security guard close to the jewellery store noticed when the suspects smashed the cabinet and alerted the security personnel via the shopping complex’s control room. The police and centre security were on the scene within minutes and are currently investigating the

incident. Security footage clearly shows the robbers pointing firearms at personnel in the store. “We have clear security footage of the faces of the robbers as they exited the parking lot,” continues Dell. She adds that in their rush to get away, the robbers drove through the security boom at the parking lot entrance. This is not the first time that Canal Walk was targeted, as Wood ex-

plains: “We are aware of similar incidents that have taken place at the centre since its opening in 2000, however, in the recent past there have been no incidents of this nature other than the Shimansky incident. We believe this is due to proactive approach towards security.” Wood concludes that the centre will continue to assess its “rigorous” security precautions, by improving and tightening security measures on an ongoing basis.
