#LightSAred The iconic Milnerton lighthouse lit up in red on Wednesday 5 August to show support for the #LightSAred movement. Other buildings across the country participated and took a stand against the country’s lockdown regulations to raise awareness about the economic impact on the live events industry. FCS UNIT: RAPE THE MOST UNREPORTED CRIME, GLOBALLY

Helping victims of GBV CARINA ROUX The family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit at Kuils River police moved to its current location three years ago to be more accessible to the community and victims of gender-based violence (GBV). The unit is at 58 Van Riebeeck Road across the street from the police station. Commander, Capt AC McDonald says the FCS unit investigates all sexual related offences as well as missing children. This includes sexual offences committed against men. McDonald says there is still the perception that men cannot be raped, but the Sexual Offences Act states any person can be a victim of rape irrespective of gender. “People need to know that being a victim of rape is never the fault of the victim. Every person has the right to say no.” He says it is extremely important to report

a rape immediately after it happened or as soon as possible for the police to investigate and to apprehend the perpetrator. “It is also imperative that a victim of rape be medically examined immediately after an alleged rape or soonest, preferably within 72 hours. “The reason is to record injuries and to collect evidence such as DNA or clothing. DNA is of crucial importance.” McDonald says rape is the most unreported crime, not only in South Africa, but globally. It’s a myth that women cry ‘rape’. Other myths are that “a woman invites rape by dressing or acting seductively” and “if the rape is imminent, do not fight”. “There is no evidence indicating that compliance or non-forceful resistance is a deterrent from being raped or murdered.” McDonald says there are also misperceptions about the sexual abuse of children.

Most are not assaulted by strangers. “Up to 90% of children are sexually assaulted by someone known to them, like their parents or other relatives.’’ He says sexual abuse happens across all socio-economic communities in urban and rural areas. Signs and symptoms of child sexual abuse can include behavioural changes such as anxiety, a drop in school performance, anger or withdrawal. Physical signs can include torn or stained clothes, vaginal or anal injuries, pain with urination or bowel movement and pregnancy. McDonalds says one should always be aware of your surroundings. He shares the following safety tips: . Avoid meetings with strangers or leaving your child with strangers or even family members that you do not trust absolutely 100%.

. Be sure you trust people or acquaintances as in many cases the perpetrator of a sexual offence is known to the victim. . Never go out alone. Always be with a friend you can trust. . Park your vehicle in well-lit areas. . Avoid walking in alleys, unlit areas or areas known to be dangerous. . Attend parties with friends you trust. . Never accept a drink of any kind from strangers. . When you buy drinks, especially alcohol at a club, stand at the bar and watch your drink being poured. This is to prevent anybody throwing date rape or other drugs in your drink. Drink responsibly. V Staff from the FCS unit often give awareness talks on GBV and sexual offences at schools, hospitals, childcare facilities, places of safety and so on. Phone Capt McDonald on 021 900 2844 or 082 334 8416 to arrange a talk.

Ons gaan on-

Ek wou dadelik weet waar hul basis is en was geskok toe ek sien hulle kom onder ’n afdak by iemand se huis bymekaar.
