INFRASTRUCTURE ‘OVERLOAD’: INVESTIGATION TO BE LAUNCHED

Wallacedene timebomb DESIREÉ RORKE

T

he housing crisis in Wallacedene is a ticking timebomb.

While the situation remained volatile for most of last week with a strong police and metro police presence to keep the peace, a host of other problems plaguing the township were revealed.

An acute shortage of housing and an ongoing influx of residents from other provinces remain at the heart of this crisis.

Damage running into an estimated hundreds of thousands was done to RDP housing last week; and approximately 149 trees were

uprooted from the sidewalks when 500 angry protesters from the Temporary Relocation Area (TRA), threatened some 17 families to vacate the new RDP houses recently completed in Wallacedene.

Didn’t qualify According to TRA residents – all shack dwellers waiting for houses – these houses were illegitimately occupied by persons who did not qualify for the city housing scheme.

On Wednesday, subcouncil chairman Grant Twigg condemned the violent protests that started on Monday, saying that damages to city property were extensive.

A full report on the monetary value of the damages done will be drawn up in the next couple of weeks.

“I accept that many of these complaints were legitimate and are in the process of being addressed, but condemn the manner in which the protests were done.”

“There are open channels of communication available to these communities to address the issue,” he said during the subcouncil meeting.

According to Twigg, subcouncil officials and ward councillors had a meeting scheduled with the community of the TRA on the same day the protests erupted.

“I now realise why they telephoned to postpone the meeting on such short notice.

We also had a meeting with them two weeks ago during which I indicated to the community that all their issues are being dealt with,” he said.

These issues included additional toilets, a water and sanitation plan that is ongoing and shacks that needed to be moved to higher ground due to winter rains.

“Many of the TRA residents are not beneficiaries of the new houses in Wallacedene but basic services must be rendered to them,” he said.

SAPS arrests two for drugs Two men were arrested in two separate drug heists in Kraaifontein last week.

“Attempts by the South African Police Service in the Western Cape to successfully eradicate the flow of illegal drugs in our province, has yielded success following the arrest and confiscation of a huge quantity of drugs and money,” said police spokesperson Capt Frederik van Wyk. In the first incident the members received information that drugs were being sold at a house in Dahlia Street, Scottsville.

Kraaifontein police launched a search and seized 90 mandrax tablets, 150 small plastic bags containing tik and 141 grams of tik with an estimated street value of R50 000.

They also confiscated a huge undisclosed amount of cash and arrested a 19-year-old suspect.

In the second incident patrol vehicles were busy with stop-and-search duties in

Park Avenue, Scottsdene in the early afternoon on Wednesday, when they managed to catch a man who attempted to run away.

When they searched him, they found tik and a house key in his possession.

At the particular house in Park Avenue they found 100 small plastic bags containing tik with an estimated street value of R4 000 and an undisclosed amount of cash. They arrested a 23-year-old male suspect from Scottsdene.

Both suspects, caught in the separate drug incidents have been arrested for dealing in drugs and are due to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court.

“The aim of crime prevention operations is to effectively prevent drug abuse and peddling in order to ensure the safety of the communities. These arrests and confiscations should be a clear message to all criminals that crime does not pay,” says Van Wyk

He furthermore revealed that more shacks were erected on the already overcrowded TRA, by incoming residents while the protests were ongoing and that the city’s land invasion unit will have to investigate this matter.

If these shacks are demolished, it could give rise to a new spell of protests.

He stressed that the infrastructure burden on the area is immense due to the continual influx of people into Cape Town, and that with every new house being built, four backyard shacks can be added to statistics, continually loading the infrastructure.

Investigation At the same meeting, ANC ward councillor in parts of Wallacedene, Simpiwe Nonkeyizana, tabled an urgent motion concerning the rehabilitation of infrastructure in Wallacedene.

He moved for an investigation into the sourcing of additional funding for the project and that the incoming tenders be investigated and compared with the specifications given.

The motion was seconded by ANC PR councillor Tony Ehreinreich, who was also present at the meeting, but later – after Ehrenreich left the meeting early – had to be seconded by DA ward councillor for Wallacedene Brenda Hansen, for it to be accepted.

In the motion, Nonkeyizana referred to an earlier subcouncil meeting in April where a city official revealed that the necessary funding was not available in city coffers to repair the existing damages to the infrastructure.

At this meeting, official Rob Johnston indicated that the two tender prices received for the work was too high and that more funding would have to be sourced from the city or province.

According to Johnston the consultant used estimated an amount of R24 million for the work, but that the tenders by far exceeded this.

Johnston said that he was of the opinion

that the contractors submitted higher quotes as they found the current infrastructure “overcrowded”, presenting difficult conditions to work in.

According to Nonkeyizana, the sewer system has deteriorated since then as it is overburdened by a huge resident load and that any form of rain turns into floods as the drainage system has also exceeded its appropriate life span.

In the motion he stated that repairs to roads will cost more, if they are not attended to as soon as possible.

“The community is deprived in benefiting from housing as the municipality does not approve the building of houses with the current state of infrastructure,” the motion read.

Constant influx Brackenfell ward councillor Marian Niewoudt said that a letter should also be written to the mayoral executive to alert them to the fact that their development planning could be based on erroneous population statistics due to the constant influx.

She also stressed that much of the funding is sourced from national government, for which the City of Cape town is not accountable.

“I do agree that additional funding must be sourced urgently and that the possible health risks that could arise from this situation be seen as serious,” she said and stated that the issue must be addressed in the upcoming adjustment budget.

Following the subcouncil meeting, Tandeka Gqada, mayoral committee member for human settlements, on Thursday echoed Twigg’s sentiments saying that the protests in Wallacedene resulted from illegal land invasion in the area.

“The city cannot condone illegal occupations. If we do, the result will be chaotic, unsafe and unfair and will undermine a key principle of our constitutional order; the protection of property rights,” she said in a statement.

“As a result of these protests, many community members have been threatened, city

property vandalised and a staff member hospitalised,” she said.

“With regards to allegations of corruption in the allocation process, the city urges any individuals with proof to lay criminals charges with the SAPS.”

Housing fund According to Gqada the Wallacedene Housing Development takes the form of a People’s Housing Project, which is driven by the community themselves, so there is very seldom interference in housing allocations On Thursday she submitted an application to the emergency housing fund to access funds to assist the 17 families whose homes were destroyed by the protesters.

As the week continued approximately 15 shops owned mostly by Somalis and Chinese citizens were looted as a result of the unrest.

By Friday afternoon the Somali refugees were seeking shelter at the Kraaifontein police station.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut, 55 suspects were arrested on charges of public violence. They were detained until their court appearance at the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“The violence associated with the housing dispute … is an example of criminals using every opportunity to perpetrate a crime,” he said.

On the same morning Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Arno Lamoer met with community leaders and representatives from Somali-owned businesses to address their concerns.

“He strongly condemned the violence and assured the community that it will not be tolerated.

“A strong police presence will remain in the area to deal with any situation which may arise, and to maintain law and order,” he said adding that the situation was under control at that time but will be closely monitored.

Traffic in stranglehold DESIREÉ RORKE

aily traffic in and out of Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Kuils River has surpassed bottleneck status, to reach what has been termed a stranglehold.

This is according to Marian Nieuwoudt, ward councillor for Brackenfell and parts of Kuils River.

A the recent subcouncil meeting held at the Kraaifontein chambers last Wednesday the City of Cape Town tabled a response to an urgent motion made by Nieuwoudt in September last year, advocating that no further development should be permitted while the current road infrastructure is lacking behind.

Capacity In this motion Nieuwoudt stressed the incapacity of the current road infrastructure to carry the traffic in the area. She also stated that degenerated roads in Kraaifontein need replacing.

“There must be about 300 000 vehicles on Bottelary Road alone at peak-hour traffic by now. There simply is no more room to move,” she said.

According to Nieuwoudt an economy cannot thrive if people and goods cannot successfully be transported.

“I don’t want the current situation to neg-

atively affect development in future. The city will have to look at a traffic impact study and public transport issues more carefully,” she said.

In her earlier motion she stated that the residential areas of Kuils River, Brackenfell and Kraaifontein have seen rapid development in the last 10 years, with no capital investment in re-building or upgrading of inner-city roads, although the income generated from property taxes has grown exponentially.

Peak periods “The result is a total block of access roads during peak periods as well as unbearable rat-racing.

“Both Brackenfell and Kuils River have only one access point to get to the rest of the city.

“We cannot accommodate any more trips on these roads,” she said adding that development in Brackenfell ground to a halt during 1999 and 2003 for this very reason.

The recommendations made by the city in response to her motion encapsulated the funding and development of a growth management strategy for Brackenfell and Kuils River, to address the current roads infrastructure crisis in the area.

The advantage of such a plan, for one, will be the identification of potential “bottlenecks” in the early processes of pending development.

The cumulative impacts of a number of developments will thus be assessed in terms of a holistic plan of infrastructure provision.

Impact “It will be argued that the issues raised

by Nieuwoudt in her urgent motion stem directly from a lack of an urban growth management plan in an area where rapid development … is taking place and the impacts are manifesting themselves in increased traffic congestion,” the report authored by town planner Charles Rudman read.

Rudman further stated that certain road networks, such as the R300/Bottellary Road interchange, require substantial investment over and above the funding from development contributions.

A preliminary motivation will now be required in order to obtain funding for the preparation of the abovementioned growth management strategy.

This according to Rudman will enable a comprehensive infrastructure led development approach.

Celebrations with a difference Smiles, laughter and dance movements were all around at this year’s Youth Day celebrations held by a local youth group in Kraaifontein.

For God’s Kingdom Crew Youth, celebrating Youth Day is about more than food stalls, great music and an electrifying atmosphere.

“Ultimately we aim to spread a message of hope in what has become an at-risk community,” says Dominique Adonis from the group.

Bethel Tabernacle’s youth department, GK Crew hosts an annual Youth Day event, and this year’s event – which took place last Monday – was dubbed the most successful thus far.

“In light of the recent gang violence in Scottsville, our theme for this year was ‘No to Crime’.

“We were fortunate enough to have the best sound equipment and resources avail-

able, which resulted in masses turning up to take part in the celebrations,” he says.

Every year, the children of Scottsville look forward to the games and entertainment, and this year was no different.

Face-painting, jumping castles and interactive games made out part of the kids’ entertainment for the day. “For us it is offering our skills and time, for kids from an impoverished background, it is people taking out time to put a smile on their faces.”

The community was further entertained by local live music, with the likes of Swiff D, Chadleigh Gowar, Chrystal Swanson, JDubbs and Peter Maart, GK Crew Dancers, Morne Katz and more.

Well, bowl me over at age 101 ROWENA HENDRICKS The Spirit of Bowls, a bowls development initiative event, was recently held to celebrate the 101st birthday of Andy “Cobra” Barron, a bowls legend and former business owner in Parow.

Barron is also a former president of the Goodwood Bowls Club.

The special event, an interclub pair’s game challenge, took place between Barron (then still 100) and his daughter, Lyneth Milne, representing Goodwood, Stellenbosch and Van der Stel Bowling Clubs.

According to Milne her dad was always a good sportsman who excelled in cricket and rugby, but “he only started playing bowls at the age of 65”.

“My dad did not play as a novice. In his first year of playing, his team won the Western Province Fours Competition. At the age of 94, dad reached the semi-finals of a national senior singles bowls competition, and he always wishes that he had started playing the sport sooner in his life,” she says.

Their opponents of the day were nineyear-old Jaco Fourie and his father, Koos, who were representing the Kraaifontein Bowling Club (KBC). Fourie Jnr is a learner at Aristea Primary School. He started playing bowls at the age of eight at the KBC where his parents are members. He became a club member in 2012, and a member of Bowling South Africa and the Western Province Bowling Club in January 2013.

Fourie Snr is currently the president of the Kraaifontein club and a bowling coach.

The teams were a good match for each other, and the scores ended in a draw at 20 points each.

Barron, who is now living with his daughter in Stellenbosch, celebrated his 101st birthday on 6 June. “He has an extremely positive attitude towards life and never com-

plains of the difficulties he has overcome. He loves a good laugh and his brain is still very quick to wordplay. Dad will always tell you that God has been very good to him over the years,” says Milne.

She says her father’s sight is failing and hearing impaired, but he can still dress, shave and shower himself.

“Dad walks twice a day and enjoys listening to sport commentary on rugby and crick-

et on the radio with headphones. He stopped driving at the age of 97 due to impaired sight,” says Milne.

She says her dad eats well and “the only regular tablet he takes is an anti-viral compound”. “Dad hasn’t been sick, not even once in the past five years,” says Milne.

At the age of 94, Barron and his wife of more than 70 years, Phyllis, who died in 2009, moved from Edgemead to Stellenbosch.

Nuwe Voortrekkers ingelyf Die Kraaifontein-Voortrekkers was deel van die jaarlikse massa-inlywing wat in Mei by Fort Wynyard plaasgevind het.

Hier het agt kommando’s van die noordelike voorstede bymekaar gekom vir hul jaarlikse inlywings.

Ander kommando’s teenwoordig was Durbanville, Kanonkop, Monte Vista, President, Bellville, Oom Vossie, De Kuilen en Tierkop.

Sowat 500 mense het by die Voortrekkers aangesluit vir die seremonie waar 117 nuwe lede ingelyf is.

“Uit Kraaifontein se geledere was daar vier penkoppe, ses drawwertjies, een offisier en twee heemrade onderskeidelik,” sê Suzette Marais.

Besoekers het ook die voorreg gehad om die terrein te besigtig, en meer oor Fort Wynyard te leer.

Na die verrigtinge het die Kraaifonteinkommandolede en ouers wat die geleentheid bygewoon het, by Groenpuntpark bymekaar gekom om die res van die middag saam te kuier en te geniet met ’n lekker piekniek.

Trojans on the march to victory Remember when the Gladiators used to light up TV screens? The next generation is set to take over as the daring, physically capable men and women of television history have evolved to become today’s Trojan Warriors 2013.

You can now watch the new series of Trojan Warriors being filmed for television until Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June at the GrandWest Grand Arena.

The Trojan Warriors show is about mortals who, all starting on the same level, fight their way up each level by participating in a variety of games.

On their way up they will accumulate points which will get them to the next stage, being immortal status, and finally to the ultimate title, that of Trojan Warrior.

Both the filming sessions of Trojan Warriors and the television series itself will provide great thrills for all South African fans of spectacular action entertainment.

The live action will offer fun for the entire family who can be part of the exciting action and not even strain a muscle doing so. Trojan Warriors 2103 the TV series will be screened weekly over a period of six months.

For the live shows, Teen Trojan Warrior will take place from 10:00, while the Trojan Warrior sessions will begin at 18:00 each evening.

Champion of champions DESIREÉ RORKE

H

e was overcome with emotion and tears were plentiful when he saw his shiny new bicycle.

For Matthew Brooks, a learner at Paarl School, this bicycle represents a big dream – to perform for his country as a paralympian one day.

Impossible after only cycling for one year? As the maxim goes, impossible means absolutely nothing for this young champion of champions, who seems to be unstoppable in his quest.

Matthew now 14 faced his first hurdle at birth.

Palsy Born 10 weeks premature, he was only able to breath on his own for 24 hours before being ventilated.

After ten weeks in hospital he was allowed to go home but, according to mom Chantal, he was always a little behind and it was only after an evaluation by a paediatric neurosurgeon two years later that the stark reality of his condition became known.

He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy with spastic diplegia.

“When a parent is told this, you feel that your whole world has collapsed and that there is no future for your child, but that is not so with Matthew. Matthew is a vibrant and very competitive child and doesn’t believe he has a disability,” she says.

“We decided then and there that we will do anything possible to allow him to have a ‘normal’ life.” Matthew was accepted into Paarl School in 2003 and is currently still a learner there in their practical division.

Since then Matthew has undergone numerous operations for rhizotomy, derotation of the hip to name but a few and last year was diagnosed with scoliosis, which could result in more operations to place plates along his spine.

Despite all of these challenges, Matthew remains an energetic teenager who is, according to his parents, sport crazy.

Because he cannot partake in many sports due to his problem with balance, the

school’s physiotherapists decided that cycling would do him good.

Since starting a year ago, he has achieved numerous feats.

In his first race, the annual Hermanus Wheelers and Runners 10 km, in May last year, he came in second with a time of 41.10 mins.

This year he bettered his time from 41.10 to 29.40, although he came in fifth.

Matthew later joined up with Western Province (WP) Cycling for people with physical disabilities in June and now races once a month.

In September last year he attended the WP trials for road and track racing and was selected for the WP cycling team.

In March this year he took part in the nationals in Pretoria, where he obtained four gold medals in his age group of u-16.

“We are extremely proud of him and are hoping that he will eventually be able to compete on an international level,” says his proud mom.

Donation Hearing of these successes and that Matthew’s current bicycle is getting too small for him thus affecting his times, local company GRW Commercials decided to step in.

“One of our employees who knows the family brought a donation sheet to work asking for small donations.

“We all put our change down, but soon realised that it doesn’t come close to covering the price for the specialised bicycle Matthew would need,” says Maryke Cloete from GRW Commercials.

They then approached managing director Jan Coetzee, who without hesitation donated the balance outstanding to get the new specialised bicycle and specially designed gear.

“Our company is known to support the local community and we wanted to help this young achiever gain his full potential,” says Jan. “I love my new bicycle; it’s very cool and rides easy,” the shy young sportsman told TygerBurger.

When asked about his dream of becoming a paralympian one day, his answer was casual: “Of course I can.”

Die hoërskool-troep wat die 2010-nasionale kampioene is, het verlede naweek die WPkampioenskapsbyeenkoms by die BellvilleVelodrome gewen.

Die junior klub wat in 2010 tweede gekom het in die nasionale kompetisie, het tweede plek behaal by die provinsiale kompetisie.

Beide die troepe was verlede jaar die WPkampioene met ’n derde plek by die nasionale kompetisie.

“Dis net harde werk en toewyding wat hulle sover gebring het en ons is baie opgewonde oor vanjaar se nasionale kampioenskapsbyeenkoms,” sê Colette Stofberg, afrigter van albei troepe.

Die nasionale byeenkoms vind tussen 1 en 7 Julie by die Peter Mokaba-stadion in Polokwane plaas, waar beide groepe vir drie dae sal meeding teen net die bestes in die land.

Volgens Stofberg het hulle vir vyf kategorieë in die elite-liga ingeskryf wat dril, vlagwerk en stokwerk insluit.

Die sowat 80 plaaslike meisies vertrek die einde van die maand, met die doel om weer die nasionale titel terug te bring Kaap toe.

Stats show HIV infections up in northern subdistrict DESIREÉ RORKE The HIV infection rate in the northern subdistrict of the city is on the increase, according to a report tabled at last week’s subcouncil meeting.

A total of 4 722 people were tested for HIV in the northern subdistrict of the city in the last quarter of 2012, of which 393 tested positive.

Dr Andile Zimba from the City of Cape Town’s Health Directorate submitted the quarterly report containing this statistics.

Clinics operating in the northern subdis-

trict include Bloekombos, Bothasig, Brackenfell, Brighton, Durbanville, Fisantekraal, Harmonie, Northpine, Scottsdene and Wallacedene.

According to the report, persons who tested positive for HIV were put on ARV programmes in accordance with the protocol.

Zimba said that ongoing awareness campaigns were conducted by health promotion officers to motivate people to get tested and know their status.

“Female and male condoms are distributed widely in the district as a prevention strategy... and the district’s prevention of

mother to child transmission rate is 3,0 which is within target,” the report read.

According to the Health Directorate, the current HIV prevalence in the subdistrict is 26 (2011), which is an increase from the previous 22,1 (2010), and an increase of four points in the infection rate.

The highest prevalence in the district is found in Bloekombos with 113 persons testing positive in the specified area, followed

by Durbanville with 60.

In Brackenfell 11 people tested positive.

The same report indicates that the Health Directorate is targeting women under 18 to

attend family planning clinics to prevent unplanned pregnancies.

A total of 992 women under 18 visited the various clinics in the district for reproductive health issues, during the same period.

The highest number of patients seen in this regard were in Wallacedene with 259, followed by Bloekombos with 198 and Fisantekraal with 122.

In Durbanville the number was 99 and in Brackenfell 38.

Ward councillor Marian Nieuwoudt lauded the report for its accuracy and statistical precision.

Locals compete in wind section Some 15 young wind players will be competing from 27 June to 6 July in the first South African Wind Instrument Competition.

Among the group are five Capetonians of which two are affiliated to the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre (HL) in Parow. They are the saxophonist Liam Burden (25) and flautist Myles Roberts (21).

The competition was introduced to give local wind players exposure to the standards, requirements and procedures of international competitions.

Burden has been a staff member at the HL centre since January 2012. He has been conducting the HL Symphony Orchestra since August 2012.

He graduated from the University of Stellenbosch with a BMus Hons Cum Laude, specialising in saxophone performance.

During the same year Burden was awarded the opportunity of studying saxophone and conducting abroad at the West Virginia University in America.

Flautist Myles Roberts from Kraaifontein, a former student of Vesna Milakovic at Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre, is currently a final year BMus student at the University of Stellenbosch. He impressed the audiences with his solo performances at Artscape and at the HL Concerto Festival last year.

The Unisa competition is the brainchild of Arisa Voges, director of the Directorate of Music at Unisa since July 2010. She was also the Head of the Department: Woodwinds at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre.

Wenmotief kweek nou sportbarbare Die wenmotief is besig om sport in ’n barbaarse aktiwiteit te verander. Net die naweek alleen moes rugbygeesdriftiges aanskou hoe Samoa by twee geleenthede hul Springbok-teenstanders doelbewus probeer ernstig beseer het.

Met die koms van beroepsport is sportwaardes lankal by die agterdeur uitgesmyt. Om jou waardigheid te behou en jou teenstanders met respek te bejeën, is beslis nie meer deel van vandag se sogenaamde sportmangees nie.

Mens sien dit al op skoolvlak waar vuisgevegte en ontoelaatbare spel in rugby algemeen raak. Ongelukkig stel ouers ook nie hier ’n goeie voorbeeld nie.

Meestal is dit juis hulle wat langs die kant van die veld hul waardigheid verloor deur soos besetenes tekere te gaan.

En die skole moet self ook van die blaam dra – die klem het by die meeste skole verskuif na sport as die doel op sigself, pleks van ’n bydraende faktor om die kind te ontwikkel.

Ja, sport bring deesdae net die slegste in ons almal na vore. En die meeste van ons is skuldig daaraan. Dink maar net aan die kwetsende opmerkings en hoe die Protea-spelers verguis is in die hoofstroom- en sosiale media, nadat hulle verlede week in die kampioenetrofee deur Engeland in krieket verslaan is.

Is sport regtig só belangrik dat dit sulke reaksies ontlok? Nee, beslis nie, daar is veel ernstiger vraagstukke in ons land wat daardie soort emosies regverdig.

Kelners moet fooitjies verdien Ek lees met belangstelling “Vriendelike waitress” se brief (“Kelners verdien hul fooitjies”, TB, 19 Junie). Ek gee graag ’n fooitjie maar dan moet die persoon wat my bedien, dit verdien. Ek eet gereeld in Brackenfell se restaurante. Kelners weier soms om jou taal te praat (Afrikaans) … en dis ’n geengroot-fooitjie. Kelners verduidelik nie die volle spyskaart aan jou nie en as jy vrae stel, is die antwoorde ontwykend. ’n Sekere restaurantgroep wat ’n pensioenaris-spyskaart het, haal dit nie uit nie (alhoewel hulle kan sien jy is ’n pensioenaris) want dis minder wins… geen fooitjie. Kelners kom soms slordig voor wat kleredrag en manier van praat betref. Indien jy kla oor die kos te koud of die biefstuk te rou is, is hulle onvriendelik daaroor (ek weet dis nie die kelner se skuld nie). Elke mens se taal is belangrik vir hom of haar, maak ’n punt daarvan om hul taal te praat. Verduidelik alle spyskaart-opsies aan alle gaste sodat hulle ’n ingeligte besluit kan neem. As die kos nie reg is nie, maak verskoning by die gas en verdedig sy of haar klagte by die sjef. Jou voorkoms en algemene opregte vriendelikheid is uiters belangrik om ’n suksesvolle kelner te wees.

Ek was ook in die spyseniersbedryf en ek stem saam met jou – dis harde werk van vroeg tot baie laat, maar met vriendelikheid en die regte gesindheid kry jy meer terug as wat jy verwag.

Jy sien, “Vriendelike waitress”, om ’n kelner te wees en 10% te eis moet jy jou gas (met sy baie geld vir uiteet!) laat voel of hulle die belangrikste mense is wat jy op daardie tydstip bedien. Ek dink jy is een van die min goeie kelners, maar neem maar ’n “bladsy uit my boek” – ’n mens kla nie oor fooitjies nie, jy verbeter

net jou diens. Onthou ’n goeie produk het nie advertensie nodig nie. En vir die res van julle wat dit lees – neem kennis en leer daaruit.

It is very disturbing to see adults behaving like pigs. At least a pig dirties his own pen.

Here we find people worse than that. Their rubbish is dumped next to another man’s house.

We are supposed to love each other, care for each other and protect each other’s property. People simply have no respect for their neighbourhood, let alone their fellow man. How can I teach my child respect and manners if I do not set an example. We talk about the evils of drugs and gangsterism, yet behave like thieves by dumping rubbish at night.

Personally I think we need divine intervention and serious prayer for these pigs to become human again.

Van die klublede het na die jong man gegaan en gevra of daar ’n probleem is, waarna hy nee gesê het, maar gevra het “soek jy ’n probleem” en toe hulle wegdraai, weer geskree het julle “klub se p...”.

Die gryskop het trouens niks met die hele storie uit te waai gehad nie, maar die jong man het toe besluit om terug te kom en sy motorfiets te kom omskop en het meer skade aangerig as om net op hulle te vloek.

verdien en om so brief in ’n koerant te plaas sonder die regte feite is onvanpas teenoor die gryskop man. Die jong man het dalk verdien wat na sy kant gekom het. Ek dink nie dit is die bikers wat hulself ’n slegte naam gee nie, maar die stigma wat daar is oor bikers.

Ek was al by verskeie plekke waar mense uit hul pad sal gaan om bikers uit te lok om ’n reaksie uit hulle te kry. Wel, jy gaan dit kry as jy daarvoor soek!

Vryburgers het groot planne vir die Kaap Die korps van die Vryburger-omgeemense, wat vroeër vanjaar formeel in die Tygerberg gestig is, het groot planne vir die Kaap.

Die Vryburger-omgeemense-Tijgerberg glo deur hande te vat, kan hy verligting bring aan nood in die gemeenskap.

André Prins, die basuin (skakelbeampte) van die organisasie, sê alles wat hulle invorder, gaan na mense toe.

Die Vryburgers is ’n nie-politieke diensen kultuurbeweging wat die stoflike, sowel as die opvoedkundige, kulturele, geestelike en maatskaplike ontwikkeling (ongeag ras, geslag of ouderdom) van die gemeenskap, asook die bevordering van die Afrikaanse kultuur en tradisie, ten doel het. Die organisasie vier vanjaar sy 50ste bestaansjaar.

Die Tijgerberg-tak is een van 18 landwyd, wat saamgesnoer word in ’n vrywillige organisasie met die Bybel as grondslag.

Hulle streef daarna om die gemeenskap te dien, om die Afrikaanse kultuur en tradisies te erken, uit te leef en op alle terreine te bevorder en om kameraadskap en samewerking in die gemeenskap te bevorder en aan te moedig.

Die organisasie pak twee soort projekte aan – geldinsamelings- en diensprojekte.

“By die Tijgerberg-tak takel ons enige geleentheid om geld in te samel, soos ’n suksesvolle rugbydag wat ons onlangs aangebied het. In die toekoms kyk ons na geleenthede soos ’n gholfdag, winterbal en ander,” sê André.

Wat diensleweringsprojekte betref, beoog die Vryburgers om met honger kinders, bejaardes, Bybelverspreiding en boekprojekte te begin.

“Ons besef dat eensaamheid ’n kwessie is en die behoefte aan geselskap soms net soveel is as geldelike behoeftes,” sê André.

The three-week long mid-year school holiday has finally arrived.

For children it’s a welcome break, but for many parents who have to work it can be a stressful period of constantly wondering if their child is safe.

There are however, some basic and practical safety precautions which parents can introduce to their children, regardless of whether they are left with a caregiver, domestic staff or stay at home by themselves.

“It is important that they know to always keep entry and exit doors locked, and that no-one is to enter the home without your permission,” said Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Security, Western Cape.

He urged that it is a good idea to make use of a list of emergency contacts.

This includes the 10111 number near the telephone in order to explain to them when and how it should be used.

“If you have a home security system installed teach them how to activate and de-activate it and how and when to use other security devices like panic buttons,” Rob advised.

The cold weather means that children are often confined indoors, allowing boredom to quickly set in.

There are usually solutions for this, such as wanting to visit a friend who lives in the neighbourhood.

If you are not able to drop your child off or arrange a lift for them, Rob suggests that parents walk the route with their children before they have to do it on their own.

“Explain that it is better to take a longer route down familiar streets where there is more activity than taking short-cuts across fields or through deserted areas or roads they’re not used to,” he said.

“On the day, they must call you to let you know that they are about to leave home and again once when they have arrived at their friend’s home. If while walking they find themselves in an unfamiliar street, they should look out for a police or security officer and never talk to or take advice or a ride from a stranger.”

Shopping malls are also, as a result of the holidays busier and is a popular hang-out for older children.

If children are going to a movie or to meet friends, they should be encouraged to look after their belongings and to look out for each other.

“Busy malls present a prime opportunity for pick-pockets. They need to hold tightly onto their handbags, wallets and cellphones,” Rob said.

It is also important that if they become separated from their friends they head straight to the mall information desk or to security and try to track them down from there.

Stars of Royal Ballet in CTCB’s Sleeping Beauty Two international stars from The Royal Ballet in Covent Garden, London, will perform in The Sleeping Beauty production at Artscape between 10 and 18 August.

This major scoop for Cape Town City Ballet was announced by the company’s executive director, Prof Elizabeth Triegaardt recently.

Roberta Marquez and Nehemiah Kish, both principal dancers at Britain’s foremost ballet company, will grace the stage in the roles of Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund for two performances.

Marquez, originally from Brazil, has been a principal with The Royal Ballet since 2004, appearing in starring roles such as Odette/ Odile (Swan Lake), the title role in Cinderella and as Swanhilda (Coppélia). Hailing from the USA, joined the company in 2010, dancing many principal roles, including James in La Sylphide, Romeo (Romeo & Juliet), Prince (Cinderella, The nutcracker) and Prince Siegfried (Swan Lake).

For the remaining four performances, Cape Town City Ballet’s principal dancers, Laura Bosenberg and Thomas Thorne will alternate in the lead roles with Burnise Silvius, principal dancer from The South African Mzanzi Ballet Theatre, partnered by CTCB’s Trevor Schoonraad. The Lilac Fairy will be performed by Angela Hansford, Kim Vieira and Claire Spector, while the role of the evil fairy Carabosse will be shared by Johnny Bovang and Mervyn Williams.

This fairytale love story of a beautiful princess, a handsome prince, the evil fairy, and the most romantic kiss of all time is set to charm young and old. With beautiful sets, costumes and enchanting music by Tchaikovsky, this opulent production of the ultimate classic ballet is not to be missed. The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany four of the performances.

Charity Ballistic Blues recently released their first five-track EP. “It sounds just fine,” Nick says.

“It’s compiled of the songs we like the most,” JP says, adding that while they don’t play some of the songs on the EP live any more, fans who have been following the band since the beginning will recognise them.

Tyan and JP are also both members of another local band, Dogtown, and when they aren’t making music as a unit, the members are usually jamming with friends.

“We’re all friends with musicians,” JP says.

They also jam for charity. Ballistic Blues have teamed up with Reach for a Dream for their Reach for your Slippers campaign and will be one of the bands performing on the Orange Couch when it visits Canal Walk on 13 July to promote the fundraising campaign.

“They want you to buy a sticker for R10, and then you can wear your slippers to work or to school on 2 August,” Francois explains.

Touring The band still wants to tour Johannesburg and Pretoria and add to their already impressive list of festivals they’ve played at, which includes Up the Creek, Kleinmond Big Blues festival and Table Mountain Blues Summit.

Rocking the Daisies and Oppikoppi are two of the festivals on their wish list. They also still want to record a full-length album and they are in the process of planning a music video.

Ballistic Blues have also recorded a song for the Blues Breakers compilation album currently being recorded by V&H Music and Publishing, which will see Ballistic Blues feature alongside some of the biggest blues names in South Africa.

The album is tentatively marked for release in August.

That’s how lead guitarist, Tyan Odendal, describes northern suburbs band, Ballistic Blues.

Ballistic Blues have been making music since about 2010, when its members were still at school.

Bassist, JP Le Roux, explains that the band started out as a solid blues band, but their sound developed as the band grew musically.

“We still have blues elements, but it’s a lot more rock ’n roll and a lot more funk,” JP says of their current sound.

“It’s very energetic,” drummer Francois Keyser says, while vocalist Nick Forbes adds: “Because we’re young, we try to keep it fresh.”

“And we’re still growing, so there’s a lot of ground to cover,” Nick says.

Nederburg Concert Series begins Leading classical musicians promise music lovers an evening to remember at the 2013 Nederburg Concert Series.

The first concert on June 30 features the acclaimed Pauna-Redfern Piano Duo who will play works by Schubert, Ravel and Stravinsky.

Omtrent twee weke gelede het hierdie resep die rondtes begin doen op die Facebookblad, genaamd Food Lovers Recipes. Omtrent almal het dit gebak, van onervare baksters tot baasbaksters. Die resultate was eweneens uitstekend. Die lekkerste was dat elke persoon sy eie variasie aan die koek gegee het deur die koek op verskillende maniere te versier, na gelang van hulle begroting en smaak. Die resep het selfs ’n draai gemaak op een van ons bekendste Afrikaanse radiostasies.

Juis omdat die resep sy oorsprong op die internet gehad het, het ek besluit ek moet dit beslis met ons lesers deel, aangesien baie van ons lesers nie toegang tot internet het nie. En dit sal sommer net ’n sonde wees om nie hierdie heerlike maklike resep met julle te deel nie.

Ek het dit natuurlik self getoets en ook ’n treffer gevind. So hier is die baie gewilde drie-bestanddeelkoek.

Jy het nodig: . 6 eiers, geskei

1 koppie bruismeel 1 koppie suiker (jy kan strooisuiker gebruik vir ‘n fyner tekstuur) . .

So maak mens: Voorverhit oond tot 180ºC. Smeer of spuit koekpanne baie goed.

Skei die eiers, gooi ½ koppie suiker by wit van eiers en ½ koppie suiker by die geel van die eiers. Klits wit van eiers baie goed (amper tot styf) en klits dan gele baie goed.

Gooi bymekaar en voeg meel bietjies­bietjies by.

Bak vir 30 minute, toets met toetspen of deurgaar, verwyder uit oond en laat effens afkoel.

Keer uit, laat heeltemal afkoel en versier na smaak.

Die koek kan in ’n tuitpan gebak word of in twee aparte koekpannetjies.

Voorbeelde vir versiering: Karamel, botterversiering, sjokolade­ganache, roomkaas­versiering (soos vir wortelkoek), vanilla­botterversiering met granadillamoes oorgedrup, room styfgeklits en vars vrugte, glansversiering.

omorrow night (Thursday) will be a bone-crunching affair when Gideon Drotschie (Kuils River) takes on Gauteng’s Danie van Heerden in an Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) light heavyweight title fight at Carnival City.

The fight will be televised live on SuperSport.

To date, Gideon has a blemish-free record with five wins as an amateur and three professionally.

Three years ago when he first set foot in Rico Hattingh’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy he new this was it. He felt at home immediately and who better than Rico Hattingh to mentor you?

Training Gideon also gives classes to primary schoolchildren at the Welgelegen NG church hall on Tuesdays. According to Rico this helps Gideon in growing as a fighter.

“You need a lot of patience and these children help you with that. Sometimes you need to show them certain techniques over and over and you must have patience and not become irritated. Gideon is brilliant with them and that is what he needs in fights like this.

“The fight is not always going to suit your pace or style and that is when you need patience and take the gap when it presents itself,” said Rico.

As with all other MMA fighters, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is where the best of the best compete. When the dust settles Friday night, Gideon may just be one step closer to the big stage.

MASTERS ATHLETE: NOW IS THE TIME

inally after 32 years the time has come for Vincent McBride (50) to represent his country on the world stage at the XX World Masters Athletics Championships.

The Bothasig resident and SAPS captain will compete in the triple jump and long jump in Porto Alegre, Brazil from 16 to 27 October.

Many moons ago, 32 years to be precise, at the age of 18, Vincent set a new South African triple jump record at 15,66 m – a record that stood for 22 years.

He would go on to receive his junior Springbok colours.

Let’s rewind to his days in primary school where it all began with a simple game called “stokkies”.

Stokkies “We would be a couple of friends playing.

We would place three sticks or stones apart and see how far we could jump between them. So your first step would start at the first stone and how far you jump determines how far apart the second and third stones are placed,” said Vincent.

Years on as a learner at Bosmansdam High School, Vincent would meet his coach Schalk Burger. After all these years the two

of them still work together.

“Schalk is like a second father to me. We would train for hours on end and experiment with Russian training techniques which proved valuable. If I had a injury he would come to my home and help me.”

There was a period between 1993 and 2003 that Vincent decided he would take a break.

During that time he played soccer for Bothasig and Edgemead.

Brazil Thanks to Colonel Voster who convinced him to make a comeback for the police provincial athletics team he hasn’t looked back since.

“I discussed the Brazil trip with Schalk and we both decided this will be the best time to compete since I will be the “youngster” in the 50 to 54 year division.

“Currently my training is going really well. I train six days a week for about two hours each day. This will vary from gymnasium work, to working on the track and going for jogs.

“I am so focused on my training I haven’t really put much thought into what I would like to achieve. Obviously a medal would be great ...It will be an emotional moment wearing my national colours with our anthem playing.”

Vincent McBride will finally get the chance to represent his country.

INFRASTRUCTURE ‘OVERLOAD’: INVESTIGATION TO BE LAUNCHED

Wallacedene timebomb DESIREÉ RORKE

T

he housing crisis in Wallacedene is a ticking timebomb.

While the situation remained volatile for most of last week with a strong police and metro police presence to keep the peace, a host of other problems plaguing the township were revealed.

An acute shortage of housing and an ongoing influx of residents from other provinces remain at the heart of this crisis.

Damage running into an estimated hundreds of thousands was done to RDP housing last week; and approximately 149 trees were

uprooted from the sidewalks when 500 angry protesters from the Temporary Relocation Area (TRA), threatened some 17 families to vacate the new RDP houses recently completed in Wallacedene.

Didn’t qualify According to TRA residents – all shack dwellers waiting for houses – these houses were illegitimately occupied by persons who did not qualify for the city housing scheme.

On Wednesday, subcouncil chairman Grant Twigg condemned the violent protests that started on Monday, saying that damages to city property were extensive.

A full report on the monetary value of the damages done will be drawn up in the next couple of weeks.

“I accept that many of these complaints were legitimate and are in the process of being addressed, but condemn the manner in which the protests were done.”

“There are open channels of communication available to these communities to address the issue,” he said during the subcouncil meeting.

According to Twigg, subcouncil officials and ward councillors had a meeting scheduled with the community of the TRA on the same day the protests erupted.

“I now realise why they telephoned to postpone the meeting on such short notice.

We also had a meeting with them two weeks ago during which I indicated to the community that all their issues are being dealt with,” he said.

These issues included additional toilets, a water and sanitation plan that is ongoing and shacks that needed to be moved to higher ground due to winter rains.

“Many of the TRA residents are not beneficiaries of the new houses in Wallacedene but basic services must be rendered to them,” he said.
