Local taverns equipped with PPE kits During the month of June, liquor manufacturer Distell will equip tavern owners with personal protective equipment kits to ensure safe trading during the national Covid-19 lockdown. Kraaifontein taverns had their chance to get the kits last week. Pictured here are regional general manager for Distell, Sholto Sims and Oliver Nonyadia of Sinethemba Tavern in Wallacedene.

T
he Kraaifontein woman who was held in an Omani prison for a year has been released and is back in the country. Chloe Collins (24) is said to have been wrongfully detained in May last year for having known of her brother’s return to South Africa before he could be questioned by officials about an alleged crime committed in the middle eastern country. At the time of her arrest, Collins had been working in the hospitality industry in Oman. She was released early this month and ar-
rived in her home country on Monday 8 June. Overjoyed with the reunion, Collins and her family had to wait 14 more days before they could see each other as she went straight into quarantine. Speaking through their lawyer, Simone Carolissan, who has taken the case pro bono since the beginning, the Collins family expressed their gratitude for the support they and their daughter have received throughout the case. “Over the course of the last year, many members of the public have lent their support, worked with us, and prayed with us in our quest to bring Chloe home from wrongful detention in Oman. Many of
those who have supported us, have continued to ask about the status of Chloe’s case and about her wellbeing,” Carolissan said on behalf of the family. After spending time in detention in Oman for many months without charge, access to legal advice, or due process, public interest and support here in South Africa allowed Chloe to fight for justice. “While we are still studying the court’s judgement on her matter, we have been informed that Chloe was ultimately found guilty of having knowledge of her brother, allegedly a person of interest in another matter, returning to South Africa.” V To page 8
