onteheuwel, Goodwood, Netreg and Parow train stations have been identified as cable theft hotspots. This is according to Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott who added that additional train stations include Heideveld, Firgrove, Khayelitsha, Kapteinsklip and Nyanga. Scott told TygerBurger until the demand for scrap metal drops, opportunistic criminals will continue harvesting metal. “Most offenders have received effective

imprisonment as well as suspended terms and been declared unfit to possess firearms. The offenders are in the main the foot soldiers of the brains behind the syndicates and due to rife unemployment there is an unending supply of hapless individuals driven by drug addiction, gang affiliations and poverty to replace them. In the Western Cape not a single scrap dealer or bucket shop has been closed yet. ‘Trolley’ thieves are the minority. The export of scrap metal also continues unabated and appears poorly regulated. “In addition to the usual metal theft and vandalism, pilfering and burglaries at sta-

tions and offices and theft mushroomed as lockdown progressed and the economic situation became more dire. In addition metal, gates, doors, tiles, bathroom fittings (wash basins, taps) and office furniture and goods were stolen,” she said. Last year, Scott revealed that R1.2 billion had been set aside to restore the required infrastructure along Metrorail’s central line. Vandalism on the central line, which runs along Bonteheuwel and Netreg, has been a growing concern for Metrorail. She explained the restoration process includes the walling of critical areas to protect the newly

built infrastructure. “Significant portions of the electrical infrastructure (overhead lines, mass poles, sub-stations), tracks and some stations have been either vandalised beyond repair or completely removed by vandals. In addition illegal electrical connections ingress onto the rail reserve, sewerage is disposed of onto tracks by informal settlements along portions of the route, sporadic gang turf wars and frequent service delivery protests make it impossible to restore services without major intervention. Poppekas verruil verhoog RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

D

FROM PAGE 1 “Cable theft and vandalism is not static and harvesting of infrastructure has moved to other areas especially during lockdown. The northern line suffered a lot of damage with stations and offices broken into and anything with second hand value stolen,” said Scott. Since the start of the lockdown, the northern line, where stations are further apart, was also targeted especially Firgrove, Goodwood and Parow stations. “Fibre cables were also cut before vandals realised it had no scrap value, but by then the damage was done and had to be painstakingly repaired.” Law enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason said cable thieves mostly operate

at night. He explained two incidents which happened on 2 and 3 February. “On Tuesday 2 February in the early hours of the morning suspects were apprehended on Jakes Gerwel Drive in the Epping industrial area. They had in their possession an array of tools used habitually by metal thieves. The vigilance of the officers brought their raid to a premature end.” Dyason said in the early hours of Wednesday 3 February officers apprehended another suspect in the Epping area. “They observed three men walking down the street and when confronted by the officers two of the suspects pulled out firearms and pointed it at the officers. A quick reaction resulted in one suspect be-

ing arrested. The others managed to escape. The firearm was discovered to be an imitation. These night operations expose the officers to extreme danger, but they are necessary because thieves use the cloak of darkness to conceal their illegal activities which do so much damage to essential infrastructure.” Scott said there is a domino effect with cable theft. “For perpetrators there’s the risk of electrocution, for train users deteriorating service levels and for Prasa there’s an escalating cost of maintenance and unsafe operating conditions.” Rewards of up to R25 000 are payable for information leading to successful conviction. Support for food gardens N

on-profit organisations are urged to apply for grant funding to implement a food garden project in partnership with the City of Cape Town. In a statement it reads that this initiative by the City’s urban management directorate is an intervention planned for the current financial year and is set to see an estimated 720 farmers participating in this urban farming project, with at least 30 food gardens in each of the City’s 24 subcouncils. “The organisations which will be considered will be legally established, registered as a non-profit organisation or as a non-governmental organisation, with proven expertise and/or accreditation in the field of urban farming, poverty alleviation, project management, capacity building and empowerment of disadvantaged communities.” The City’s Mayco member for urban management Grant Twigg said food gardens ensure food security. “Growing our own food helps us to create better food security for our communities, improves our diet and health, helps to alleviate poverty and also assists with building skills and creating jobs. “The project will provide support to new and existing farmers using secured sites such as backyards, schools, open space around City buildings, churches, NGOs, clinics and libraries that require no capital costs. “We want to see our communities being actively involved and taking ownership of projects of this nature.” The following are examples of support initiatives that may be considered: . farming kits including but not limited to tools, seeds and fertilisers; . training including, but not limited to, skills development in areas like planting, tending, harvesting, mentoring etc; and . business development support, establishment of cooperatives and facilitating access to markets. All prospective applicants must submit the following documents: . City’s supplier database number and National Treasury supplier database registration number; . a signed copy of the organisation’s constitution; . proof of bank account details (not older than three months and stamped by the bank); . list of your organisation’s bank account signatories issued by the bank; . latest annual financial statements (if the amount you are applying for is more than R50 000); . an Income and Expenditure Statement as tabled at your last Annual General Meeting (if the amount you are applying for is less than R50 000); . a copy of your organisation’s latest upto-date municipal account. If the organisation is in arrears, you can arrange a payment plan with the City’s Revenue Department. If the organisation is renting property, the owner (Lessor) of the property must be up-to-date with their municipal account payments. If the organisation is registered as a VAT Vendor, the organisation must submit a zero-rated tax invoice, which will include the City’s VAT number 4500193497; . a valid Tax Compliance Status certificate including a Sars issued tax pin; . a valid NPO/PBO certificate; . certified copies of the identity documents (ID) of board members/management committee members/ members of the board of directors or certified copies of the ID of the chairperson and treasurer of the organisation; and . minutes of the organisation’s AGM not older than 18 months. The statement adds that proposals and submissions together with all supporting documentation must be submitted to urban.agriculture@capetown.gov.za. The closing date is 16:00 on Friday 19 February. NPO calls for assistance to feed children: The Social Community non-profit organisation is appealing for donations to assist in feeding children in the Bishop Lavis area. Chairperson August Williams said making sure children are fed is a priority for them as many don’t know where or when their next meal will come from. “We currently feed children aged 3 to 14. Any assistance, in the form of vegetables, will be appreciated. We aim to feed the poorest of the poor. Donations can be dropped off at 55A Lenton Drive.” PHOTO: TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS

New subcouncil 5 chair: Ward 50 councillor Angus McKenzie has been elected as the new chair for subcouncil 5. This follows the death of former chair councillor Courtney van Wyk who lost his battle to cancer and Covid-19 complications on Monday 25 January. The areas consist of Airport Industria, Bishop Lavis, Bonteheuwel, Delft, Golden Gate, Kalksteenfontein and Valhalla Park. “This is indeed a huge responsibility. It gives us an opportunity to drive change, implement the highest levels of services and ensure delivery of only the best for the residents of the subcouncil. I would like to thank my family for their support, my colleagues from both sides of the political divide for the confidence in me, but most importantly, to the residents of subcouncil 5, thank you,” said McKenzie.

Online series to raise funds for cart horses To bolster their fundraising efforts which had been limited by Covid-19 restrictions the Cart Horse Protection Association (CHPA) is hosting an online webinar series to introduce viewers to other equine welfare organisations. The association does valuable work to promote the welfare of working horses and donkeys locally through service provision, legislation, education and training.

The Coffee with Cart Horse series consists of talk show style interviews happening every two weeks at 18:00, starting on Thursday 25 February with The Lesotho Project. Tickets for each interview cost R100 and will be available at www.quicket.co.za. The rest of the series is: . 11 March: Blind Love . 25 March: Coal Yard Horses . 8 April: EARS Donkey Sanctuary

‘Drop 10’ club helps those in need T

he Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust’s Drop 10 membership club – a club designed for professionals who want to play an active role in supporting the trust in its work, and positively impacting the lives of children cared for at the hospital – is still being well supported after being launched a year ago. Prof Johan Smith, founder, says by joining the club, he and his peers are able to make a measurable impact and drive change for the better. “Joining the club is a no-brainer for me; by donating a portion of my income to a cause that I am already involved with, and because the trust is a registered public bene-

fit organisation, I am able to claim back benefits from Sars and directly see the impact of my donation in the work that the trust does,” says Smith. The club is a programme for professionals who contribute a portion of their annual salary, and in exchange receive a Section 18A certificate for tax relief. This is an annual membership whereby the member may participate with other club members in specific campaigns. The club is unique to the trust whereby members are afforded influence in supporting the trust’s work far beyond just making a donation, a spokesperson for the trust says.

“The purpose of the club is to encourage professionals to play an active role in social initiatives beyond just monetary support to a cause, but actively engaging and participating in social upliftment. “The member’s donation and effort through the membership club goes towards the care of 60% of the province’s children who fall within the hospital’s care footprint, the hundreds of children actually visiting our hospital and its school and the impact we are able to bring to the communities of people that support them,” the spokesperson says. SLICE OF LIFE

Min het ek toe geweet ek sal my vandag binne-in daardie debat bevind. Feit is, katte jag. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! Want so ’n foto wil ek nooit weer kry of sien nie. Dalk KWV. – Werner van Tonder

Thanks for the memories, Newlands

felt at home. Farewell Newlands, thank you for everything. NIKITA SCHRONEN e-mail

“The sweetest part of leaving home is knowing that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, you’ll always carry it with you.” A day I was dreading the most has come. On Saturday 23 January the last game of rugby was played at Newlands. It wasn’t the best game from the home team, but the past 133 years have been nothing short of magical. From seeing the likes of Corné Krige and Morne du Plessis run out to seeing the young guns of Jean-Luc du Plessis and Chris van Zyl running out of the oldest stadium in South Africa Newlands had it all. It had tears, it had laughter, it had lots of stressful moments, but most importantly, it was the home of many memories. It was the place where Chester Williams would break through the opposition defence on his way to the try line. It was the place where Schalk Burger could not wait to go into “Hulk mode” and tackle everybody in his way. It was the place where I watched my very first rugby game. How do you say goodbye to a place that’s like home? Newlands, thank you for being the best home anyone could have ever asked for. You gave me memories that I’ll carry in my heart forever - from my first time as a fan, when the flag was bigger than me, to my last time sitting in the stands when I attended the funeral of Chester Williams. They say home is not a place, it is a feeling. Every time I visited you, I

Graag lug ek ook my opinie oor hierdie interessante onderwerp.

M. SUMMERS E-pos

Brackenfeller wil forum stig As Brackenfeller is ek besorg oor ons as gemeenskap. MARIANA VAN WYK Parow

Scintillating start to karting season The 2021 Western Cape Rotax Max Challenge karting season exploded to life on a typically searing Cape February day thankfully punctuated by an occasional breeze at Killarney on Saturday 13 February. The action was just as hot on track in a day of contrasts that saw both a bit of domination as well as some cracking fights for glory through the afternoon. Senior Max was surely the race of the day as Andrew Rackstraw took the overall win without winning a heat. In a dramatic afternoon, pole man and South African champion Tate Bishop exited the first race early, leaving Jason Coetzee to storm to the win from Rackstraw and Kyle Visser. Bishop then took advantage of a fraught five-way fight ahead of him to move up from the back and pounce for the lead and make off for the second race win over Kyle Visser, while Rackstraw and Storm Lanfear pulled a last lap move on Charl Visser for third and fourth. Bishop then took care of early leaders Rackstraw and Coetzee to make off for another heat win in the final, but Charl Visser’s day went from bad to worse when he exited after coming from behind to second to release Rackstraw, Kyle Visser and Lanfear after Coetzee was stripped of third for his part in Visser’s demise. That meant that Rackstraw took the day from Kyle Visser, Lanfear, the troubled Charl Visser and Coetzee. It was a different matter in DD2, where Joseph Oelz came, saw and conquered on his DD2 debut for his return to karting following a year away. Joseph put it on pole position and steamed away to a trio of race wins, with a fastest lap each time over reigning South African champion Sebastian Boyd. Behind them, Masters winner Conor Hughes kept the battling Jared Jordan, Andrew Thomas and Michael Jordan at bay for third overall, ahead of a splendid dice between Steve Beaumont, newcomer Rafe Tayler, Andre Steenkamp and rookie Gil Simoes. It was a case of more domination when WP Mini champion Reza Levy put a season of quietly learning the bigger class to great use as he troubled the Senior frontrunners en route to a compelling high school Junior Max win. The constantly improving Matthew Wadeley however left Killarney with a new Junior Max lap record as he made Levy work for his final win. Wadeley also held Ethan Stier off for second overall with two heat seconds to Stier’s one with Jaden Jacobs fourth from Joshua Smit and Joaquin

de Oliveira, both of whom later concentrated on their Mini Max afternoons. De Oliveira had a brilliant day in senior primary Mini Max as he made off up front to deliver a clean sweep with three fastest laps too. He left his rivals to fight it out among themselves as the top five each had a turn on the podium through the day in a great start to the Mini Max season. Out of town visitor Erich Heystek improved through the day to deliver a fine come from behind third in heat 2, before going one better to take second for the day by a point from Joshua Smit and another ever-improving local Jordon Wadeley, Keagen Beaumont, Jude Stuart, Ethan Deacon and Oliver Roach. While those three races saw domination, junior primary Micro Max was on the other hand once again most entertaining. Kegan Martin overcame Dale Hobbs to win the first race but hit trouble in race 2, before bouncing back to pass Hobbs early and drive off to the final heat win. Formula K Raceway on 6 March, before the second round of the KZN regionals at iDube on 14 March. Then follows the first 2021 Rotax Max National back at Killarney on 26 March 2021.

rugby player from Eerste River has just received a huge boost on her journey to becoming a professional player when she was chosen for the Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute. Lucretia Louw, a 24-year-old local from Keerom Street in Kleinvlei, Eerste River, received the news of a lifetime when she opened her emails. There were only 32 spots available at the prestigious institute and she was chosen as one. Louw says she couldn’t be happier. “Firstly I am immensely thankful that I was chosen to join this group. I am actually over the moon. My dream is to work hard so that I can play professional rugby. If I reach my goal I would like to inspire women on and off the rugby field,” says Louw. According to Louw she would encourage young girls to play rugby. “Rugby is not just a sport, it is love and passion and it brings something out in you that you didn’t even know existed,” says Louw. Louw started playing rugby in 2018 when the Eerste River Rugby Club was established and according to club coach, Alexandrie Joseph, she performed well. “We live in an area marred by social imbalance, lacking enough mentors, role models and positive reinforcement, leaving young girls falling prey to all forms of abuse, eventually succumbing to a sense of hopelessness. The Eerste River Rugby Women’s team became an offering of safety with the possibility for dreams to take on a substance of its own. Lucretia, together with five or 10 other girls, kicked-off the team with little to no experience. Now standing at 22 team members they managed to endure the grueling training sessions as well as survive the 20 plus matches against more established rivals such as Maties, Macassar, Kuils River, CPUT and Dolphins, to name but a few. Wins were few yet very sweet. It however always served as a learning curve to the novice players. Driven by a deter-

mination born from dire circumstances, with the help of the coaches the girls never gave up and continued to practise on their own even through lockdown. “Lucretia stood out from the beginning and rapidly raked in those sought-after titles of team captain, Sportswoman of the Year, as well as the players nomination for Player of the Year awards. Her dedication spanned even through lockdown when she continued practising and motivating others within the team. This beautiful young lady, youngest sibling to three brothers (one of whom passed on), raised by a single parent, is truly an inspiration and role model to her team and community. The Eerste River Rugby Football Club as well as her team mates wish her well on this exciting journey even though they will miss having their strongest center and flyhalf player watching their backs,” says Joseph. Anyone wishing to contribute in any way toward helping her buy those amenities not covered by the scholarship, are welcome to contact Joseph on WhatsApp on 074 926 2872. You can also follow her exciting journey on Instagram@lucretialouw11.
