Mayor Dan Plato handed over equipment to the Masithembele HIV and Aids Enrichment Centre in Mandela Peace Park in Delft. The building in Mandela Peace Park was recently broken into and all equipment stolen. This hampered the organisation’s ability to feed more than 1 000 children in the community.
NEW LOOK: MATCHES NEW REGULATIONS
Elsies PTI gets fenced up TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 The Elsies River Public Transport Interchange (PTI) has a new look as the City of Cape Town’s transport directorate installed a 1.8m high fence to promote the safety and security of commuters during the Covid-19 pandemic. The fencing of the PTI serves as a pilot to determine whether the City should go ahead and undertake similar actions at other PTIs across Cape Town.
Local councillor Franchesca Walker, who was part of the planning phase of the project, said she is pleased with the outcome. The official launch of the project took place on Thursday 2 July. “The aim of this pilot project is to identify any issues before having it rolled out to other PTIs in the city. On the day of the launch, about 1 000 face masks were handed to commuters and this opportunity was taken to encourage hand sanitising and social distancing. “Since the launch, there has been no prob-
lems and this is also thanks to the Elsies River City Improvement District (CID) team who does an exceptional job in the area every day,” said Walker. With 24-hour security and surveillance cameras, Walker said there are no concerns about the fencing being stolen. “I’ve been in discussion with the City’s transport directorate for a while now where I mentioned that more attention should be paid to the PTIs in ward 26 – these include Elsies River, Parow and Vasco PTIs. When I was informed about the Elsies PTI being
chosen for the pilot project I was very pleased,” she said. The City’s Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase, said there are officials at the various points of entry to the PTI, taking temperature readings and ensuring that everyone entering the facility is wearing a mask. “The fight against this virus calls for a concerted effort. Thus, as a caring and safe City we are doing all we can to ensure that our public facilities are compliant with the regulations as far as possible. V Continued to page 7.
