Repairs “The ceilings in the reference area will be repaired as these are now becoming problematic and leakages have occurred,” she said. “The skylight above the main circulation desk will also be replaced due to leakages,” according to Walker. The library will also be painted throughout. The final cost of the maintenance work will depend on the final work done, she said. “All of the libraries in the City of Cape Town undergo maintenance work within a five-year cycle. An allocated number of libraries are therefore scheduled for these upgrades every year and Durbanville is part of that schedule for this year,” she said in answer to a question why this work was neces-

ue to drastic maintenance work at the Durbanville library, library goers will have to use other libraries in the northern suburbs from Tuesday 29 April. Due to maintenance work costed at R500 000, the Durbanville library will be entirely closed for two-and-a-half months, only reopening on Monday 14 July. The last day the library will be open prior to the start of renovations will be on Saturday 26 April. The closest alternative libraries are in the Tygervalley Centre, Bellville, Brackenfell and Kraaifontein. Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member for community services and special projects, said the nature of the work necessitates the closure, “as it could endanger the sa-
sary following recent construction work at the library. The Durbanville library was newly renovated and extended in 2009 after R12 million was granted by the Shuttleworth Foundation – R6 million each towards the Durbanville and Fisantekraal libraries. Mark Shuttleworth grew up in Durbanville and donated the money for Durbanville’s bicentenary. The existing 1 240 m² library was enlarged to 1 760 m², including a 140 m² extension to the east of the adult section, a 40 m ² project room and a libary hall of 220 m². The staff room and staff toilet facilities were renovated and new toilet and kitchen facilities built. A new double volume foyer of 105 m² with glass and a floating roof was built at the entrance of the library. More parking bays we-
re also added.
Donation The upgrade included the donation of R58 000 worth of books, including the purchase of two additional sets of encyclopaedias for the reference and study areas, as well as new furniture for the teenage and children’s book sections. According to Walker the latest maintenance work at the library was done five to six years ago. “This construction work added sections to the library, but did not extend to the existing library at the time, whereas the upcoming maintenance work will be conducted on the library as a whole,” she explained. A notice has been placed in the library to this effect and will also be placed on the library website.
