Gender based violence highlighted: Bothasig police have teamed up with their local Cedar Spar to raise awareness around gender based violence as we celebrate Women’s Month in August. The store will be selling purple coloured hamburgers until the end of the month as part of their raising awareness programme. Burgundy Estate resident, Angie Kirsten (left), was the first customer last week to purchase a bag of the hamburgers. She is seen here with Bothasig police spokesperson, WO Jacques Mostert (centre), and bakery manager Charles Franke. Read the full story on Page 5.

DECLINE IN CASES: POLICE PRAISE TEAMWORK

Crime stats look promising RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

B

othasig police officials have indicated that they are pleased with this year’s crime statistics. The national crime statistics were released on Friday 31 July. No murder cases were reported in the Bothasig area in 2019/’20 while nine sexual offence cases had been reported during the same period – five more cases than the year before. Only one attempted murder case had been reported in the last year, the same as

the year before, while assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm also only increased by one. The past year a total of 11 cases had been reported. The precinct recorded an increase of 18 common assault cases. A total of 104 cases were reported last year with 86 cases the year before. Common robbery, however, indicated a decrease of six cases, with only 13 cases having been reported, compared to 19 the year before. Robbery with aggravating circumstances also showed a decline of 20,8%. A total of 38 cases were reported in the past year, 10 less

than the previous year. Lt Col Patrick Jacobs, Bothasig station commander, says the low numbers is as a result of the fantastic partnership by all the partners in the fight against crime. The partners include all the Bothasig, Edgemead, Richwood and Plattekloof, Welgelegen and Panorama neighbourhood watches, Bothasig Community Policing Forum, security companies as well as the Law Enforcement, Traffic and Metro police departments at the City of Cape Town. “I am very proud to say that our combined efforts to combat crime in our area has yiel-

ded good successes. As a result thereof, most of the different categories of the crime statistics have shown a reduction,” says Jacobs. He adds: “I would like to convey my sincere gratitude to every person that made a contribution in the fight against crime, however small that may be, but the results speak for itself. He challenges the rest of the community not involved to join the small group of “caring protectors” currently looking out for their safety. “All of us together can make this area even more crime free,” says Jacobs.
