Makro opens to throngs DESIREÉ RORKE

The long-awaited opening of the new Makro Cape Gate store last week Wednesday proved to be a big deal.

Local charity organisations served boerewors rolls and other snacks for hungry customers, while flyovers of three light aircraft throughout the morning announced the arrival of the new store with bellowing smoke. As part of giving back to the local communities, Makro donated a total amount of R60 000 to three Early Childhood Development centres in Delft: Eagles Nest, Jelly Tots and Thulani Educare Centre. As many as 6 000 eager shoppers from all across the peninsula queued up to take advantage of the jaw-dropping opening deals, some of them even pitching up the previous day. One such die-hard arrived at 13:00 the previous day armed with her camping chair and duvet. Purchases according to Makro spokesperson Nicole Freeman included 1 560 TVs, 564 digital cameras and 263 fridges. “Fresh fruit and vegetables also flew out of the store with 3,6 tons of potatoes, 1,6 tons of bananas, 900 kg of onions, 800 kg of strawberries and 278 kg of tomatoes being sold. Toilet paper, milk and potato snacks also seemed to be among the favourites on customers’ shopping lists, with very high volumes purchased on opening day,” she said. Present on the day were Western Cape minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Alan Winde, the executive deputy mayor Ian Neilson and ward councillor Carin Brynard.
