In the family of Lions, January is a most important month for it is 134 years since the founder, Melvin Jones, was born in Fort Thomas, Arizona in the United States of America. He once asked his associates in a business circle “What if you men – who are successful because of your drive, intelligence and ambition – were to put your talents to work improving your communities?” Thus, at his invitation, delegates from men’s clubs met in Chicago to lay the groundwork for such an organisation and on June 7, 1917, Lions Clubs International was born. The association’s founder was also recognised as a leader by those outside the association. One of his greatest honours was in 1945 when he represented Lions Clubs International as a consultant in San Francisco, California, at the organisation of the United Nations. Jones’ personal code was: “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else,” and it became

a guiding principle for public-spirited people the world over. He died on 1 June 1961 at 82 years of age. His vision has created a worldwide voluntary humanitarian community service organisation with over 1,35 million men and women in 206 countries and geographical areas.
