Die sogenaamde “Slagter van Kraaifontein” sal eers weer in Februarie in die hof verskyn om aansoek te doen om borgtog. Johan de Jager het Donderdag weer in die Blue Downs-landdroshof verskyn op ’n aanklag van die moord op Charmaine Mare. Intussen het dit bekend geword dat hy ook aangekla gaan word van die verkragting en moord op ’n sekswerker van Ravensmead. Eric Ntabazalla, woordvoerder van die direkteur van openbare werke, het vroeër vandeesweek bevestig De Jager gaan aangekla gaan word van die moord op Hiltina Alexander op 17 Mei 2008, het Die Burger Maandag berig. Alexander se lyk is op 18 Mei 2008 naby Van Schoorsdrif gevind en ná ’n intensiewe ondersoek is De Jager in hegtenis geneem. Dié saak is egter verlede jaar teruggetrek nadat sleutelgetuienis, wat nou opgespoor is, nie by die hof opgedaag het nie. Mare het op 3 Januarie in Kaapstad aangekom en tuisgegaan by haar vriendin, wat die dogter van De Jager se lewensmaat is.

Nuwe waardasies vir eiendomme Nuwe waardasies vir al 850 000 eiendomme in die Stad Kaapstad word van 1 Julie gebruik vir die berekening van eiendomsbelasting. Eiendomseienaars sal van 14 Februarie af kennisgewings ontvang oor wat die nuwe waardasie van hul eiendomme is. Dié waardasies is gebaseer op die waarde van eiendomme op 1 Julie 2012. Altesame 600 000 residensiële eiendomme is gewaardeer. Dit sluit nie die sowat 15 000 deeltitel-eiendomme in nie. Volgens Leonore van der Walt, stadsraadslid vir wyk 2, sal die nuwe eiendomswaardasies van 1 Julie vanjaar gebruik word om eiendomsbelasting vas te stel. Dit beteken nie dat eiendomsbelasting met dieselfde persentasie gaan toeneem as wat die onderskeie eiendomme in waarde toegeneem het nie, het sy gesê. Die stadsraad begroot wat die eiendomsbelasting vir die nuwe boekjaar van 1 Julie 2013 tot 30 Junie 2014 sal wees. Eiendomsbelasting word hiervolgens op die nuwe eiendomswaardes bereken. Eiendomseienaars wat nie saamstem met die nuwe waardasies nie, kry vanjaar twee en ’n half maande tyd om beswaar aan te teken. Ingevolge wetgewing moet eiendomseienaars 30 dae tyd vir besware gegee word. Die beswaartydperk is van 21 Februarie tot 30 April. Die nuwe waardasies sal op die Stad se webtuiste beskikbaar wees. Geen besware wat na 30 April ontvang word, mag ingevolge wetgewing deur die munisipaliteit oorweeg word nie, waarsku Leonore.

Crake causes birder quake at Intaka ANDRÉ BAKKES The song of the secretive bird, the Baillon’s crake, might at first seem as odd as people flying all the way from Johannesburg to steal a glimpse of this rare bird, ticking it off on their list and then flying back again. This oddity by birdwatchers is, however, absolutely justified when it is driven by passion. Their need to see that bird, even if it is for just 40 seconds, is worth more than their time and money. On 19 January a Baillon’s crake was spotted at Intaka Island in Century City.

The news hit Twitter and Facebook, went viral, and soon hundreds of infatuated birdlovers descended on to the bird sanctuary. The gates opened an hour-and-a-half earlier every morning and repeated sightings of the bird enticed even more to flock to “ground zero”. Alan Liebenberg of Century City’s Environmental Office elaborates: “It created a stir among tweeters and photographers who have been descending in their droves in the hope of catching a glimpse of this normally very elusive bird. We have one previous record of it being spotted at Intaka back in the late 1990s, but it disappeared on the same day it was seen.” Liebenberg confirms that people came all the way from Johannesburg to witness the special bird. Dít doen hulle in ’n poging om R30 000 vir die Downsindroom-vereniging van die WesKaap (DSVWK) in te samel. Harold Wentzel en Sarel Strydom van Monte Vista, Lukas Kruger van Edgemead, Patrick Darlow van Brackenfell en Gert van Wyk van Melkbosstrand – almal van die departement van korrektiewe dienste in Goodwood se fietsryklub (Mountain View) – pak van 25 Februarie tot 1 Maart die lang rit tussen Bellville en Mosselbaai aan. Dié rit is van uiterse belang vir die vereniging, wat geldelik swaarkry. Die vereniging bevind hom in geldelike nood ná sy grootste donateur hulle vanjaar nie ondersteun het nie. Behalwe vir die uiters noodsaaklike geldinsameling, sal die toer ook sterk fokus op die bewusmaking van Downsindroom. Tineke Boshoff (skakelpersoon: DSVWK) sê die DSVWK moes noodgedwonge einde November personeellede se dienste beëindig. “Noodsaaklike dienste gaan voort danksy die bereidwilligheid van vrywilligers om sonder vergoeding te werk,” sê sy. Sy sê dié sindroom is die mees algemene genetiese oorsaak van verstandelike gestremdheid. “Een uit elke 800 babas in SuidAfrika word daarmee gebore. Dit is iets wat ons almal raak,” sê Tineke. Sy sê die DSVWK is daartoe verbind om maniere te vind om die lewensgehalte van
persone met Downsindroom te verbeter. Die vereniging beywer hom vir die bevordering van dié mense se reg tot onafhanklikheid, waardigheid en sekerheid as volwaardige lede van die gemeenskap. Dit behels die. bemagtiging en ondersteuning aan persone met Downsindroom en hul gesinne, bewusmaking deur verspreiding van inligting, sosiale interaksie-geleenthede, inklusiewe onderwys en werkskepping. Tineke sê PPC Sement het reeds ’n donasie van R6 000 gemaak. Die toer word vanjaar die 13de keer ten bate van die DSVWK gery. Marius Franken van Parow-Noord ry per voertuig saam met die fietsryers en vier verteenwoordigers van die DSVWK, waarvan twee met Downsindroom, gaan ook saam. Gert is fisiek gestrem en ry met ’n aangepaste fiets. Geld word langs die pad ingesamel met behulp van skole en veral nie-winsgewende organisasies, soos die Lions. Beulah Matthee, vrywillige werker van die DSVWK, wat reeds die afgelope vier jaar die reëlings vir die fietstoer behartig, sê voor die groep vertrek word soveel moontlik skole gekontak vir ondersteuning. “Skole langs die pad hou muntleggings en op van die dorpe loop vroue vooraf met kollektelyste deur die dorp,” sê sy. Fietsryers sal op die toer aandoen by Gordonsbaai, Riviersonderend en Heidelberg en slaap oor in Caledon, Swellendam, Riversdal en Mosselbaai. Cease fire and start listening to real needs “Cease fire!” one wants to scream. Can everyone just put their guns, sticks, stones, posters, and yes, pens down, shut up and listen to each other? Can we stop destroying our surroundings and saddest of all, each other? Everywhere everyone is yelling for this, demanding that. You’ll swear every single soul is being denied even the most basic of rights. Who doesn’t want more money, a better house, better services, better education and more opportunities? This need is insatiable – the more you have, the more you want – especially political power. In a democracy nobody gets what they want. Everything is a compromise. We strive towards being sort-of satisfied. To get to this point, we should listen. Not just shut up to reload the word gun, but put you in the other party’s shoes – the real party – understand their concerns and their real needs, and stop focusing on your own screwed up urge to get to the top. What is prevalent everywhere, is people trying to wipe each other out, whether by weapons or words. Nobody is listening. Least of all is anyone listening to the real victims of all these egoistic wars and struggles for power. Who are listening to honest people just trying to get on with their lives, doing their jobs, raising their children? They are the people who have to live with this – dodge the bullets, bearing the brunt of others’ greed. Please, just hold your fire.

Customer attitude in city disgusting How many customers complain about bad service and people conning them? Although these complaints have merit in some cases as there are many outright dishonest chancers out there, there is another side of the coin that rarely gets spoken about. As tradesmen, we have front row seats in observing the tendency of diminishing quality in appliances. The machines are not being made to last long and we are not in any position to change that. The best we can do is to fix these machines as best we can. It is the responsibility of the owner of the appliance to look after their property and to listen to advice given to them by the tradesmen. If they don’t, they should not blame him if their machine breaks and they definitely don’t have the right to slander him because of their mistake. There are some honest and hard-working tradesmen still out there who know their job very well and have no intention of doing people in. But these tradesmen are getting fewer because customers are ungrateful and find fault with everything. I came to Cape Town, full of hope that I would be able to make a decent living, but I do not see the advantage, as I have to struggle to get paid for services already rendered and sometimes do not even get paid by dishonest customers. Computer scam ‘reps’ still trying Referring to the article (“Beware of Computer Scam from ‘IT” reps,” TygerBurger,16 January) I was also contacted telephonically, on my Telkom landline, after two anonymous
calls half an hour apart. His accent was also of Indian origin. I asked his name and he said that it was Albert. I was expecting a call from Vodacom, to assist me with a computer signal reception problem. He instructed me to switch on my computer, so that he could assist me with my problem. I was instructed to click and open to Google, then I was asked to click onto some or other “access”, at which I started seeing various errors and warnings, flashing across my screen. I was told that I had: “4013 infractions and no warranty certificate” and if he didn’t assist me immediately, my PC would “crash down”. Then another man aggressively demanded that I give him my Visa Card number, so that he could complete the job. I said I’d rather go to the Vodacom Shop and ended the call. ANON Email
Motorists do not obey the road rules In reply to Mr De Kock’s letter (“Cyclists should start thinking about the motorists on roads,” TygerBurger, 23 January). Your statement that cyclists should take responsibility for their own safety is correct, but I have a few concerns. I am a cyclist myself and use the Bottelary Road regularly. I always ride as far left on the shoulder of the road as possible. At stop streets and traffic lights I go to the front, but always ensure that I stay out of the way of cars not to delay or obstruct them when they pull away. I have an unpleasant incident every time I go riding and not once has it been my fault. What your article does not mention is the motorists’ total disregard of road rules, the impatience, intolerance and general lawlessness on our roads. HERMAN GIBSON Email
Satisfied with a job professionally done I really feel that this company and the people behind it deserve to be commended. Towards the end of last year, an extended family member of mine accidentally badly damaged the entire passenger side of my wife’s car. He immediately arranged to have it sorted out through his own insurance, and dashed off to get a quote from a panel shop in Brackenfell which he had been told about, namely Arnies Body and Spray owned by Vincent. He returned with a quote of approximately R23 000; I requested that we obtain two more quotes from well known panel shops, one which was R35 000 and the other R44 000. This obviously raised some concerns as to the potential quality of job we would get from Arnies seeing that the quote was so much cheaper, and having done quite a lot of spray painting on my own cars in my younger days, I have a very high expectation and a good idea of how to distinguish between a good spray job and bad spray job. We took the vehicle to Arnies, and he was told that I am a very difficult customer in no uncertain terms. Arnies replied “not to worry” and four days later we received a call to say the vehicle was ready to be collected. To cut a long story short, I was astounded at the quality of the job, I honestly could not fault it anywhere. The colour match was perfect the finish was blemish-free, no “orange peel or overspray” in sight, all this at half the price of the other quotes. It just goes to show how some of these operators rip off our insurance. There was also a dent on the driver’s door which I asked to be looked at, but didn’t want to pay for a full door repair; this had been pushed out as best as possible without doing spray work, and wasn’t even charged for. There is still time until Tuesday 5 February for late entries for the 99er MTB Challenge, which will be held on Saturday 9 February outside Durbanville. The event is hosted by the El Shaddai Christian School as one of its fundraising projects. There will be a 12 km route which is suitable for teenagers and amateurs, while the 24 km is for more advanced riders. Both races start at the Durbanville race course and will end at Odendaal Street in Aurora. The 12 km race goes through the scenic Clara Anna Fontein farm, while the longer
route encompasses the wine farms of Morgenster, Hillcrest, Nitida, Bloemendal and Altydgedacht, as well as Clara Anna Fontein. There will be prizes for the winners, as well as a number of lucky draw prizes for participants. His very long walk in aid of QASA funds ESMÉ ERASMUS The QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA) was the beneficiary of a fundraising project in which Johann Odendaal undertook a long walk from Pretoria to Cape Town. Odendaal, who left Pretoria on 1 December to walk to Cape Town in aid of the organisation, arrived at the Jan van Riebeeck statue in Cape Town on Sunday 20 January. His goal with his venture, “Project Cape Town”, was to raise awareness and funds for QASA’s road safety awareness campaigns to prevent spinal cord injury. The 2012/2013 festive and holiday season has witnessed more than 1 300 deaths and thousands of injuries from road accidents. QASA implemented a road safety campaign to encourage motorists to use their seatbelts and also create awareness of the risks of texting and driving. The final amount of money raised was not known at the time of going to press. When he arrived in Cape Town, he was welcomed by the Cape Town community, Rotarians, politicians, road safety officials and people with disabilities – among them residents of the Durbanville Quadriplegic Centre. At the finish Odendaal said: “I’m walking, because I can. I’m walking, because I have to. I’m walking, because there are people who can’t, but I can.”

Learn at feet of a master Cellists in and around Cape Town are invited to enrol and hone their skills at a master class presented at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow. It will be presented by the acclaimed Austrian cellist, Erich Oskar Huetter on Monday 11 February at 14:00. Huetter was born in 1973 and studied with Hildgund Posch at the University of Music in Graz and Reinhard Latzko at the Musikakademie in Basel where he gained the soloist’s diploma and teacher’s diploma (both with highest distinction) in 1999. As a student Huetter won numerous prizes at international competitions. He has performed as soloist in major concert halls across the globe and is a popular presenter of master classes at various universities and at the International Summer Academy Stift Admont. He is the founder and artistic director of the renowned Styrian Chamber Music Festival and the festival Sounding Jerusalem in the Old City of Jerusalem. Album journey of self discovery LOUISA STEYL “This last year for the band has been a journey of discovering ourselves through the album.” So explains JP Crouch, drummer for the Jesse Jordan Band. The band released the album, Ready for the World, last year, and they are finally getting ready to release the music video for the title track. The band’s meticulous nature meant they worked on different concepts before they were happy with the direction of the video. JP says they had to decide between a storyline video or using conceptual visual elements. “We kind of just had to work with the message of the song,” he says. The result is a music video that represents the band’s journey, both to meeting each oth-

Boulers venynig in o.19 Askoleliga SAREL BURGER Die boulers het die botoon gevoer in die eerste reeks o.19 A-skolekrieketwedstryde in die Peter Buttner-liga die afgelope naweek. In die ses afgehandelde wedstryde was dit net D.F. Malan wat sy telling verby die 200merk kon stoot. En dit was grootliks te danke aan Wian Joubert (105), wat die boulwerk van The Settlers deeglik getimmer het om sy span na 209/7 in die toegelate 50 boulbeurte te voer. Hierna het Hanré Retief (6/26) korte mette van The Settlers (104) se kolwers gemaak. Brackenfell en Durbanville het albei naelskraapse oorwinnings met ’n enkele paaltjie oor onderskeidelik De Kuilen en HS Tygerberg behaal. Wian Engelbrecht (60) het ’n vername rol gespeel in die Brakke (179/9) se oorwinning oor De Kuilen (178), vir wie Francois Laminette (61) en Craig Barros (53) die beste gevaar het. Dit was ’n goeie spanpoging deur Durbanville (157/9), wat hom in staat gestel het om af te reken met Tygerberg (153). Juan Esterhuizen (42) het die beste met die kolf gevaar. Fairmont (162) was te sterk vir Edgemead (100), vir wie K. Duncan (4/30) met die bal uitgeblink het. Ross Coetzee (5/24) en Myron

Eerskomende Saterdag kry die juniors weer kans om hul slag te wys wanneer die WP junior ope byeenkoms in Bellville plaasvind. Met die oog op die WP-kampioenskapsbyeenkoms, wat van 7 tot 8 Maart plaasvind, is dit ’n ideale geleentheid om solank aan die keurders te wys waartoe hulle in staat is.
Die byeenkoms duur van 10:00 tot 18:00. Dit maak voorsiening vir ouderdomsgroepe o.16, o.18 en o.20. Die vier groot skole wat aan die MTBS deelneem, sal dit gebruik om hul spanne te slyp vir die MTBS, wat op 8 Februarie plaasvind.

W
hat started out as just shedding a few kilogrammes and feeling good for his 30th birthday, resulted in his selection for the WP Disabled athletics team. André de Jager (30) from Bellville was born with cervical spina bifida and Klippel-Feil syndrome. He will compete in the long jump and shotput at the national championships in Pretoria from 22 to 27 March. André competed in the 100 m, 200 m and long jump in Bellpark Primary and Westcliff High School as a youngster, but it is only now that he is really starting to excel in these events. “I never really gave athletics much thought. I got in contact with Wentzel Barnard at Maties in Stellenbosch and as they say the rest is history,” an upbeat André said.
Progress In his first competition last September he competed in the 100 m, 200 m, long jump and shotput. His time in the 100 m was a very impressive 12,6 seconds, he also achieved 4,90 metres in the long jump and 7,48 m with a 6 kg ball in the shotput. “My second competition one month later was even better. I ran the 100 m in 12,6 seconds, managed to get 5,1 m in the long jump and 8 metres in the shotput. “I have the privilege of working with Paralympic gold medallist Fanie van der Merwe who helps me with the 100 m event. “I follow a strict training programme seven days a week for about two hours a day. “I do 150 m sprints, sit-ups, bench presses, pull-ups, push-ups, bicep curls, abs, skipping and stepping machine to make sure I’m in top shape.”

Although his focus is set on giving his best at the upcoming national championships, he is already thinking ahead for next year where he wants to compete in all the field events and possibly even give swimming a try.
