wee maande ná ’n gruwelike voorval waarin ’n vrou voor ’n nagklub heen en weer oor sy bene gery het, wil die onderwyser en liggaamsbouer Ryno Engelke (24) van Brackenfell ander teen sulke gevare waarsku.

Sedert die voorval wat op 7 Julie buite Stones CapeGate plaasgevind het, is Engelke, ’n gewese Mnr. Afrika, in gereelde pyn en lê sy drome om uit te styg in liggaamsbou vir eers aan skerwe.

“Baie aande huil ek van die pyn en dit sal nog baie lank wees voor ek weer kan begin oefen. My bene is hopelik weer eendag reg om te kan oefen. Met die skok wat my liggaam deur is, is al my harde liggaamsbouwerk van die afgelope drie jaar tot niet, en ek is terug by die begin,” vertel hy.

Op die aand van die ongeluk het Ryno en sy meisie, Nikita Duarttee, een van sy vriende by Stones CapeGate ontmoet.

“Die aand het gesellig verloop en ons het besluit om huis toe te gaan, maar omdat my jonger

broer ’n paar drankies ingehad het, het ek my vriend gevra om sy motor huis toe te bestuur,” sê Ryno in ’n verklaring.

“Op pad na ons motors by die roltrappe af, het ek en my meisie onder gewag vir my vriend en my broer.”

Op die roltrap het sy broer, Iwan (19), ’n groepie mense voor hom gevra om te “ekskuus” sodat hy kan verby kom, wat gelei het tot “’n gestampery en geskoppery”, volgens Ryno.

“Ek het op gehardloop en die klomp uitmekaar gehaal en gesê dat almal net huis toe moet gaan en nie ’n lekker aand so beëindig nie,” vertel hy.

Terwyl hy en die Stones-klubbestuurder met mekaar gesels het, het Ryno besef sy broer en die groep mense het verdwyn.

“Ek gaan soek hom toe en hoor die volgende oomblik ’n klomp mense skree. Toe ek nader kom, sien ek my broer bewusteloos op die sypaadjie lê terwyl ’n klomp mense besig is om hom te skop,” sê hy. Hy het nader gehardloop om sy broer by te staan.

Handover of hope: The Thutuzela Care Centre at Karl Bremer Hospital received their share of the donation of Bags of Hope on Monday 11

September. The donation constituted 30 bags full of necessities, which will be used by the women and children in trauma who pass through their doors daily, often with little more than the clothes on their backs. “Ek duik toe die een ou, wat op pad na my vriend toe was. In daardie stadium het hulle agter ’n wit Volkswagen Polo gestaan met die ou se meisie in die motor. Nadat ek hom geduik het, het hy dadelik opgespring en gehardloop tot voor die motor waarin sy meisie gesit het. Natuurlik het ek agter hom aangehardloop om hom te vang en daar te hou tot die polisie opdaag,” vertel hy.

Terwyl hy hardloop, het hy gevoel hoe iets hom baie hard van agter af tref. Hy het grond toe geval.

“Dit was die meisie wat die motor bestuur het. Teen die tyd dat ek na regs geval het, was my onderlyf reeds onder die motor in en die motor het oor my bene gery. Ek het geskree!”

“Die motor het terug gerol en die regtervoorwiel het op my been tot stilstand gekom,” sê hy.

Vasgepen onder die wiel het Ryno bly lê,

maar oomblikke later het die wiel van sy been afgerol.

“Sy het toe weggery en wéér oor my been gery.”

Ryno sê toe hy afkyk, het sy regterbeen skeef na een kant toe gelê.

Sy tibia- en fibulabene was albei mors af met oop frakture, het dokters later bevestig.

Omstanders het ’n ambulans en die polisie ontbied.

Na ’n uur en half se gewag vir die ambulans is hy na die Louis Leipoldt-hospitaal vervoer, waar hy later geopereer is om ’n fiksator met agt penne in sy been te sit.

Ryno was ’n week lank in die hospitaal.

Hy het ’n saak by die Brackenfell-polisie aanhangig gemaak en met sy hulp het die polisie sy aanvaller op 25 Julie opgespoor en in hegtenis geneem. Sy is later op borgtog vrygelaat en die saak is uitgestel na 26 September. Sy word aangekla van poging tot

moord.

Hy is tans ’n onderwyser by die Laerskool Noord-Eind in die Paarl, waar hy noodgedwonge moet sit en klas gee.

“Ek dink al wat my deur hierdie tyd positief hou, is die skool se ondersteuning, asook my meisie wat alles vir my doen – van koffie maak tot my bene toegooi in die aand. Ek kan nie eens ’n motor bestuur nie en ek het begin depressief raak. En ek wens net ek kan weer normaal loop.”

Dis Ryno se hoop dat geregtigheid met die hofsaak sal geskied.

“Ek vra ook aan almal om nie te drink en bestuur nie. Baklei is ook nie nodig nie, want ’n voorval gebeur vinniger as wat ’n mens dink. Wees veilig! Dit breek my om te dink iemand ry oor ’n ander persoon en ry dan net weg.”

‘Ek’s nie die skuldige,’ sê JP oor Brynard DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

n ’n verklaring aan TygerBurger laas week, sê JP Smith, burgemeesterkomiteelid van veiligheid en sekuriteit, dit was nie op sý aanbeveling – en omdat sy glo nie haar werk reg sou doen nie – dat Carin Brynard nie weer as voorsitter van dié portefeuljekomitee aangestel is nie.

In laas week se voorbladberig, “Carin groet DA oor styl van bestuur”, maak die burgemeester Patricia de Lille die stelling dat Brynard uit die party sou bedank het omdat sy bitter was omdat sy nie weer die bogenoemde pos kon beklee nie.

Brynard, wykraadslid in Brackenfell, het in Augustus ná 11 jaar uit die DA-party bedank.

“Ek het nooit gesê Brynard doen nie haar werk nie. Ek en sy het vir baie jare saamgewerk en as voorsitter vir die veiligheids- en sekuriteitsportefeulje het sy ’n uitstekende werk gedoen,” sê Smith.

“Ons het met tye nie altyd saamgestem oor alles nie, en daaroor het ek soms my frustrasies uitgespreek, maar ek het nooit gesê sy doen nie haar werk reg nie.

“Sy moes ook in die laaste jaar noodgedwonge baie tyd afneem as gevolg van gesondheids- en persoonlike redes, maar dit was heeltemal verstaanbaar en ek het nooit enigsins geïnisieer dat sy daarom nié haar verpligtinge as voorsitter nagekom het nie,” sê hy.

“As voorsitter van die veiligheids- en sekuriteitskomitee het sy altyd haar werk baie goed gedoen.”

Volgens Smith was hy as burgemeesterkomiteelid van dié portefeulje nie eens amptelik geraadpleeg oor wie die posisie sou vul nie.

Ander het ook hul misnoeë oor Carin se bedanking uitgespreek.

Grant Haskin van die ACDP in die WesKaap sê op sy Facebookblad: “Hierdie hoogs gerespekteerde en ervare DA-raadslid en voormalige komiteevoorsitter het bedank uit die raad en die DA. “Sy noem baie van die klagtes wat ons as party vir vele jare al geopper het oor die DA se leierskapstyl, met spesifieke verwysing na die burgemeester.”

Teen druktyd het TygerBurger nog geen kommentaar van die burgemeesterskantoor oor hierdie kwessie ontvang nie.

Taxi accident leaves one dead, six injured DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

One woman died and six people were seriously injured in an accident on Old Paarl Road in Brackenfell on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning at about 03:20, according to provincial traffic chief, Kenny Africa.

“For some reason the driver of the taxi, a Quantum bus, lost control of the vehicle, swerved over the middleman of the double road and crashed into a concrete wall,” Africa says.

The driver of the taxi was arrested and charged with culpable homicide.

Local authorities attended the scene and are investigating the case.

Satisfy cupcake craving while helping kids I

t’s time to celebrate the sweetest day of the year – National Cupcake Day – and this year several shopping centres in the northern suburbs of Cape Town will be taking part in the sweet celebration on 30 September.

They are Bayside Centre, CapeGate, Canal Walk, N1 City and TygerValley Centre.

The aim is to raise money for South African children with cancer and to draw public attention to the harrowing path their families walk in fighting the disease and saving their children’s lives.

“Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer’s exposure has grown in the Western Cape. In 2016 we were able to raise more than R1.8 million on National Cupcake Day through donations

and support from the public nationwide and we were able to raise a substantial amount within the Western Cape,” says Cupcakes of Hope founder, Sandy Cipriano.

“On average we assist about 75 patients every month, by paying for either their medical or day-to-day needs. Cupcakes of Hope has helped more than 700 patients so far.”

“We will be requesting a donation of R10 per beautifully decorated cupcake. Last year I remember seeing people taking nearly 10 minutes to choose a cupcake, because there were so many stunning cupcakes to choose from, and for this we owe our bakers our gratitude. It’s all to help very ill children,” she says.

“Right now, we need to raise R600 000 for

stem cell and bone marrow transplants.

There are desperately ill children in our network whose families need all the help they can get.”

Children and families across South Africa have expressed their gratitude for the help received through the initiative.

One mother shared her six-year-old daughter’s journey with us.

“Alexis was diagnosed in February 2015 with neuroblastoma stage 4 high risk. Treatment was done in hospital; midway she had abdominal surgery to remove the mass. After completing chemotherapy in August 2015 she had to go for radiation, which began at the end of October and lasted for three weeks. She then took Reaccutane for six

months and she was doing well until August 2016 when she relapsed. The mass had come back on her brain. The outlook was not good.

We were then told by her doctor that the chemotherapy she was on before would most likely not work and therefore we would have to buy her chemo. Not being financially strong and with no medical aid, we approached Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer.

Thanks to them we were able to get the much-needed medication for Alexis. She had surgery again in December 2016 and the surgeons were able to remove the mass successfully. She continued with chemo until August of this year. She had an MRI two weeks ago and we are pleased to say she got an allclear MRI.”

A little piece of heaven on earth DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

K

uils River now has its own nature reserve, where local nature lovers can come and experience a little piece of heaven on earth... and a little birdie told me that what the new reserve is really pushing for right now is community ownership.

Haasendal Nature Reserve, so called due to the abundance of the Cape hare in the area, was established by the City of Cape Town in 2013, after the land was identified to be of great conservation importance, in an area that was quickly developing.

“In fact the entire area consists of an endangered veld type, being lowland fynbos, where conservationists also discovered the last wild population of the strawberry spiderhead. This critically endangered member of the iconic Proteacea family was discovered in 2013, with the last known specimens found on the reserve, says conservator David Morris, the reserve supervisor who was delegated in December 2016 to formalise the park.

Since then the park, situated between Kerk Street and Saxdown Road, has been fenced off and a boom gate and temporary signage have been erected.

David Morris with some of the staff at the new boom gate. his office at Bracken Nature Reserve, from where the 53ha reserve will be administrated for the time being, Morris said their aim with the reserve is to secure a long-term recreational facility and ‘green lung’ for the city.

The reserve is abundant with plant life, with some 155 plant species already having been registered.

“Every year around March, the reserve blooms with chandelier lilies and many other species. It is also home to a variety of bush birds, steenbok, the Cape fox as well as limbless skink, Cape sand snake, Cape cobra and the spotted eagle owl,” he said.

But the biggest drawcard, said Morris, is the amazing variety of raptor species found on the site.

“It has the most I have ever counted in any reserve,” he added.

“We even recorded a secretary bird here in 2014 and are keeping watch for more.”

In developing the reserve, Morris is assisted by field ranger Masande Falakhe and senior supervisor Mark Fisher, who – with the assistance of the Bracken Nature Reserve team – have been hard at work clearing alien vegetation, building footpaths and conducting night surveys.

As part of embracing spring festivities, the reserve is until the end of the month hosting free guided spring walks in the mornings between 09:00 and 12:00, and Morris encouraged the community to come and fall in love with this space.

“Come help me make it magical. A reserve only truly becomes a reserve when the community interacts with it. We need community champions to help us drive the project to develop and transform the reserve to its full potential,” he said.

At this stage, the future plans at the reserve include its own infrastructure and ablution facilities, as well as a formalised walking route and a round circle route for jogging.

On the road to completion The R487 million upgrade of the N1 on the 9km stretch between Plattekloof Road and Old Oak Interchange is 38% complete, the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) said in a statement.

The project will see a third lane being added in both directions and hopes to ease congestion significantly on the road that sees approximately 120 000 vehicles during the morning inbound and afternoon outbound peak hours.

The project is expected to be completed by April 2019. To date R9.7m has been spent on targeted labour. The progress on the different parts of project is as follows: . Jip de Jager Interchange: Work is 89% complete, with asphalt rehabilitation and paving, the construction of two traffic islands, and some other minor works currently underway. . Old Oak Interchange: The western portion of the Old Oak Bridge was demolished in May to make

space for new lanes. It will be rebuilt over the next 14 months to new specifications.

The construction of the inbound on-ramp bypass is complete and will facilitate traffic flow onto the N1 inbound. The construction of a retaining wall at the temporarily decommissioned inbound on-ramp is underway. Once the Old Oak inbound on-ramp has been widened and realigned, it will be recommissioned for operation. . Plattekloof Interchange: The widening of the right-hand side of the Plattekloof inbound off-ramp is under way.

The left lane of the outbound on-ramp has been rehabilitated to address deformation and cracking. . Durban Road Interchange: The widening of ramps at Durban Road Interchange has commenced. The contractor is constructing layerworks on the Durban Road outbound off-ramp, and is undertaking excavations for layerworks on the outbound on-ramp.

yf leerders van die Hoërskool Brackenfell het uitstekend presteer tydens die South African Air Rifle Association (Saara) se WP-kampioenskap wat verlede naweek plaasgevind het.

Al vyf skuts het hul WP-kleure verwerf en was in sekere klasse die skuts van die jaar.

Zane van Zyl het ’n brons- en silwermedalje ontvang vir twee o.16-kategorieë vir seuns en is aangewys as skut van die jaar vir die kategorie 3P 10 m-sporter.

WAT DIE HART VAN VOL IS

Die gesig van ’n alkoholis wat bly spook

Ek het vandeesweek in die gesig van alkoholisme gekyk. ’n Gesonde, hardwerkende, sogenaamd “ordentlike” man, maar vasgevang in die greep van drank.

Hier is dié geloof onder ouskoolmense dat jy nié ’n alkoholis is as jy nog ’n werk of vrou of huis het nie.

Min besef en verstaan dat jy kan funksioneer en steeds ’n positiewe rol in die samelewing vertolk terwyl jy hopeloos etanol-afhanklik is.

Só ook hierdie gerespekteerde man voor my, wat nie besef dat hy eintlik al klassifiseerbaar is nie.

Hoewel ek geen dokter is nie, is iemand wat élke dag van die week drink – hetsy ’n “slaapdop”, om “af te koel”, ’n sogenaamde “sundowner”, en, en, en ... – myns insiens al klaar so diep in die bottel dat omdraaikans maar gering is.

De Lille moet nie te oortuig wees dat dit sy en haar dienslewering is wat die stemme vir die party in die 2016-verkiesing bewerkstellig het nie. Kyk maar hoe lyk ons riool- en stormwaterstelsels en paaie. Daar is nie geld vir noodsaaklike opgradering nie. Kyk hoe lyk ons parke en openbare areas van oorgroeide gras en onkruid!

Dis nou die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar dat dit toegeskryf word aan “probleme met die tender”. Dit klink meer na swak of geen beplanning nie. Gelukkig ook vir haar, kon sy op die lojale kiesers van die DA staatmaak toe sy vanaf haar kwynende party as die DA se burgemeesterskandidaat aangewys is.

Dis baie duidelik dat Patricia de Lille se prioriteite nie dieselfde as die van die kiesers is nie. Indien die DA dit dus vir nog ’n termyn met haar as die burgermeester wil waag, doen hulle dit op eie risiko en nie in die belang van die land en veral die Wes-Kaap nie. Haar party het gekwyn en die DA gaan dieselfde pad loop. Miskien is die PAC tog die beste plek vir haar.

Die burgemeester maak soos sy wil Ons as Brackenfell-belastingbetalersvereniging het die laaste tyd dieselfde indruk van die DA gekry.

Dit kom voor of die DA-bestuur van demokrasie net so min weet as my hond van wiskunde. Die burgemeester maak soos sy wil en die raadslede het niks te sê nie. Dis die tipiese, arrogante ou Nasionale Party-bestuurstyl. Die burgers is net goed genoeg om elke vyf jaar te stem en dan sien mens hulle nooit weer nie. Wanneer laas was daar in Brackenfell ’n openbare DA-vergadering?

Kan die DA bekostig om so ’n goeie raadslid soos Carin te verloor? Ek het op haar wyksraad gedien en het altyd die indruk gekry dat sy hard werk om haar wyk in ’n goeie toestand te hou. Die burgemeester moet liewers haar eie huis in orde bring.

Ek kan net die Brackenfellinwoners aanmoedig om nooit weer vir die DA te stem nie.

Die DA gee ons inwoners hel, maar het nooit vir water voorsiening gemaak of beplan nie. Dis absoluut ongehoord!

Die DA wil nie die ander sektore aanvat nie, maar vat die inwoners van private huise aan. Die sakesektor en die boere sal hulle gou hof toe vat. Ek kan nie wag vir daardie dag nie. Ons moet met min water klaarkom, maar kyk hoe bou die mense.

In hierdie straat is vier

dubbelverdiepinghuise gebou.

Wie spaar die water? Die boubedryf? Die Stad? O, nee, hulle is te gulsig om die erfbelasting te bekom!

Boonop verneuk die Stad jou met verkeerde datums.

Mense wat nie wakker is nie, sien dit nie raak nie.

Nee wat, ek hoop die DA sterf ’n stadige dood. Na my mening moes alle bouery al lankal gestaak gewees het.

Die arme mense in Northpine wat gereeld onder riool is, besef julle hoe uiters nadelig dit is? Julle gaan siektes opdoen. Net ’n vloed kan julle erf skoonmaak.

As die riool droog is, is dit nog net so besmet. Dagvaar die Stad! Julle gaan nou en in die toekoms met gesondheidsprobleme sit.

Die riool wat in strome oor die pad loop in Bellville-Suid is absoluut skokkend.

Mense ry deur dit en kom stop voor jou motorhuis. Nee wat, ek stem nie vir die DA nie.

Dis jammer dat ’n persoon soos Carin nou verlore is, want sy het vir haar kiesers gesorg.

Die burgemeester maak ’n berekeningsfout om te sê sy is met 66,6% ingestem, omdat dit inderwaarheid is hoe die DA ingestem is.

Ek moedig Carin aan om in dieselfde wyk as die geagte burgemeester as onafhanklike kandidaat te staan in die volgende verkiesing sodat ons kan sien hoe gewild ons burgemeester werklik is.

Benefit concert for Liam Burden:

The Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow is organising a benefit concert in their auditorium on Sunday 17 September at 16:30. All proceeds from the concert will aid in paying the expenses incurred following the accident of the centre’s Liam Burden (head of department: woodwinds) in February this year.

Orchestras performing at the concert include the DF Malan High School Wind Band, the Cape Town Philharmonic Music Academy, the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble, the West Coast Youth Orchestra, the Hugo Lambrechts Senior and Junior Wind Bands and the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra. nleash your outdoor spirit with friends and family on 14 October at the 11th annual CapeGate Clicks Charity Run in aid of the Clicks Helping Hand Trust. With a 5km, 10km and newly added 21km race, there really is no excuse to miss this one.

Pets, prams and large groups are welcome to enter the 5km fun run, and walkers are also invited to complete the 10km event.

For the first time ever, the CapeGate Clicks Charity Run offers R73 000 in cash prizes for the first places in the 10km and 21km events. Goodie bags and medals will be given to the first 3000 people to cross the finish line, and for those wanting to really stand out from the crowd, prizes for best dressed will also be up for grabs.

Women’s Health will get everyone ready and warmed up for the 5km fun run, so make sure you get there just before the race kicks off at 07:30.

Conference to go the distance T

he Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) will hold its first South African conference tomorrow and Friday, during the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon week.

Key stakeholders from around the world will participate in the conference, which will give African and South African roadrace organisers, local governments, municipalities and federations the opportunity to listen to and learn from experts in the field of road races and trail events. Creating economic appeal, sports tourism, events marketing and adherence to international standards will all be addressed by leaders in the field.

AIMS is a member-based organisation of more than 400 of the world’s leading distance races in over 100 countries and territories.

It endeavours to cultivate and promote distance running throughout the world, and works with the International Association of Athletic Federation (IAAF) on all topics relating to international road races, while also sharing knowledge and expertise within the association. Local conference delegates will be able to engage and network with organisations from around the world while sharing in the latest findings from the organisers of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, Africa’s first IAAF Gold Label marathon.

Janet Welham, race director of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, says: “There are many criteria to having a successful race, and this conference will cover key aspects of putting together a spectacular event, and showcase Africa as the top destination in which to compete.”

AIMS president Paco Borao will open the conference and will be joined by Aleck Skhosana, Athletics South Africa (ASA) president, Alessio Punzi, IAAF road-running manager, Anroux Marais, Western Cape Government minister of cultural affairs and sport, Dr Laurine Platzky, Western Cape Government deputy director, and many other highly esteemed presenters.

The conference will provide delegates with the opportunity to witness first-hand how the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has become an iconic city marathon by enabling them to be a part of all planned activities over the course of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon week and weekend.

Die Westelike Provinsie het twee verteenwoordigers in hierdie kompetisie vir die voorste nie-universitêre klubspanne in die land.

Valsbaai het Saterdag ewe goed afgeskop in sy eerste kragmeting deur Roses United van Wellington, die topspan in die Boland, met 43-19 te klop.

Tygerberg se wedstryd op Floridapark teen die voorste span van die Oostelike Provinsie het lewendige hardloopspel gelewer en altesame 11 drieë is gedruk, waarvan 6 deur die tuisspan wie se stelskopwerk ook goed in die kol was.
