Heritage festival for Tygerberg JANA BEKKER A festival with the purpose of recognising and celebrating Tygerberg’s vibrant cultural diversity will be held over three days in October. The Tygerberg Heritage Festival takes place from Friday 25 October until Sunday 27 October. This festival is an initiative of the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) and is an event for the entire family. The theme, Building Bridges, aims to do just that between local people, businesses and organisations, irrespective of race, sex, age, faith, sexual orientation or social, educational, economic and cultural backgrounds. “We want to connect South African citizens and locals from diverse cultures living, who are working or studying in Bellville and the greater Tygerberg,” says Kemi Adebayo, executive director of the Tygerberg Heritage Festival. The festival aims to create an inclusive and innovative partnership platform for collaboration between big and small businesses, different faith communities, rich and poor as well as between the private sector and civil society groups. Kemi has organised many similar community events. “I am passionate about diversity

and knowing where people come from,” she says. Festival-goers will have the opportunity to try out foods from Nigeria, Somalia and South Africa, amongst others. The majority of activities will be held at the AFM church (AGS) building in Bellville. The festival will kick-off on Friday 25 October with presentations and exhibitions at the Arabic School in Bellville, which will be followed by the Tygerberg Benefit Music Concert between 19:00 and 21:00. On Saturday, attendees will be treated to a fashion show, live music from local artists and dance performances that include hiphop; African and Indian dances; and more. “We are also presenting two competitions – the ‘Tygerberg’s Got Talent’ competition as well as the ‘So You Think You Can Cook’ competition,” says Kemi. On Saturday, local artists perform poetry recitals and a theatre play. South African face painting, a Nigerian “Gele” headwear demo, hair braiding kiosks, and a talking drum, all form part of the activities. On Sunday, an exhibition will be held at the church, and a five-a-side football competition will be held at the tarmac at the Bellville Station between 15:00 and 17:00.
