GOLF COURSE : GOLFERS’ SAFETY PARAMOUNT

Old trees ‘had to be chopped’ ESMÉ ERASMUS

esidents are upset by the mass cutting down and logging of bluegum trees at the Bellville golf course. Bluegum trees of more than 50 years old were cut off on a large scale near the first nine hole section of the golf course, which is bordered by Nederburgh and Patriot streets and Van der Merwe Crescent in the past weeks. “Some people I have spoken to have suggested that the motivation for this massacre of trees is that gum trees are an invader species and are taking up too much water. “However, it is quite clear that this is a money making operation more than anything else as the contractor is cutting down all the best specimens (for the logs) and leaving broken scraggy looking gum trees behind,” a reader says. “Trucks are hauling away tons of logs daily,” she says. Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, says numerous trees fell over onto the fence over the past year. “Tree branches were found periodically broken off and it became a safety risk to golfers whilst on

the course,” he says. “Pruning is effective in most cases, but trees which are a risk to users of the facility and found to already be laying at an angle, were cut. This can come about as a result of strong winds, causing maintained trees to bend or blow over and as a result damage property or even injure someone,” Badroodien says. After a recent onsite inspection and risk assessment by officials of the recreation and parks department it was determined that dead trees and those lying at dangerous angles would need to be removed. “This work is currently underway in affected areas of the facility,” according to Badroodien. “The department wants to stress that tree management and the creation of an urban forest is one of our key priorities and as such, we value every tree. “Replanting of trees is prioritised when trees are removed, and this has been planned for as part of the next phase,” he says. Most recently to celebrate Arbor Month, the recreation and parks department planted over 4 000 trees, including spekboom, during September.

“... It is quite clear that this is a money making operation more than anything else as the contractor is cutting down all the best specimens for the logs.”
