Those who died at sea remembered Memorial swim-out held: Each year, the NSRI Surf Rescue Swimmers hold a memorial swim-out. This year, the NSRI Melkbosstrand Surf Rescue Swimmers (Lifeguards) started the season with their annual swim-out on Saturday 7 November. This is done not only to mark the start of the season, but also to remember those who could not be saved in time and have sadly drowned on beaches. PHOTO: MARNETTE MEYER

SOCIAL GATHERINGS: LEADS TO SPREAD

Covid infections flare up KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels

s more people are moving around and economic activity is allowed under level 1 restrictions, smaller clusters of infections flare up in Dunoon, Parklands and surrounds. Many of these flare-ups originate at social gatherings which can be anything from a party, religious gathering or even in a workplace – any place where large numbers of people congregate that is crowded, has poor ventilation and social distancing cannot be maintained. This is according to Natalie Watlington,

communications officer at the provincial health department, saying that close indoor contact and relaxed measures of prevention in communities lead to the rapid spread of the virus. “We call these ‘super-spreader’ events. While some of these events are among young people, who are less at risk of severe illness, it is crucial to remember that this can spread rapidly to the vulnerable and elderly in our communities. “There is also no evidence to suggest that young people and children are immune to the virus. While they may not contract such severe illness, they do contract it and they do pass it on,” Watlington says.

With the summer and traditional holiday season, Watlington adds that there is a need to socialise and see other people. “Ensure you connect safely with other people and stay as safe as possible when leaving your house by avoiding possible super-spreader events. “When going out, always wear your mask and avoid crowded places, close-contact settings, and confined enclosed spaces with poor ventilation. “Do not become complacent. Even when you feel safe between friends and family, you should continue to wear your mask and maintain a distance of at least 1,5m from other people,” she says.

The provincial health department says that drinking increases the chances of people touching, taking off their masks and talking loudly, all of which increase the chances of the Covid-19 spread. “It is the season to be jolly but to avoid the folly. We urge members of the public to please drink responsibly,” Watlington told TygerBurger.

Take it outside Watlington says that as more research has become available, it has become clear that the virus’ rapid spread in particles is a contributing factor. V To page 2
