nforgiving peak hour traffic on Brackenfell Boulevard, fears of illegal land grabs and a need for more community services were just a few of the topics under discussion at a property owners conference held in Brackenfell on Friday; its objective to gain inputs for spatial planning in ward 8 of Brackenfell and Kuils River.

These community inputs will be included in a 10-year district development plan that plays a crucial role when the City budget gets divided up.

“This is the first step when asking the City for money. If we don’t get the basis right, we can forget about asking for new roads, parks, or amenities,” ward councillor Marian Nieuwoudt explained to the audience, both online and at the Rusoord hall in Protea Heights.

Nieuwoudt is also Mayco member for spatial planning and environment for the City of Cape Town, having served in this position since November 2018 when comeback mayor Dan Plato appointed her.

The vision for the area as seen by Nieuwoudt is to create spaces for communities to draw closer together.

Current data indicates that Brackenfell consists of three wards being 7, 8 and 102, with a total population of 84 000 in 27 000 households, which constitutes 2.1% of the total population of Cape Town.

Brackenfell has a property ownership of 65.9%. Of the population, 70% is Afrikaans speaking, 25% English speaking and the remainder a mixture of other official languages and French as some 400 French immigrants from the Congo have made their home in Brackenfell in recent years.

“It has always been and still is the vision that Brackenfell be the residential area of choice for families, boasting excellent schools, affordable property and opportunities for budding entrepreneurs,” said Nieuwoudt.

Brackenfell is also the economic hub of sub council 2, with residents becoming more cognisant of spending their money in Brackenfell.

Development boomed in the last decade with an estimated 10 000 housing units being developed on the Bottelary corridor, and this according to property developer Xander Rau is indicative of the trust developers have in the area.

However, in keeping with this development trend, much needs to be said about the issue of the development of infrastructure lagging behind.

Sandra Dickson, co-founder of civil activist group Stop COCT, and a homeowner in Brackenfell stressed that the upgrading of road-infrastructure will have to keep up with the ongoing development in the area.

As an example, she referred to the current state of Kruispad.

Diemersdal winemaker in the running for top award A

winemaker of Diemersdal Wine Estate is among the five finalists for the Young Winemaker of the Year award.

Juandré Bruwer (30) was selected for his 2019 Diemersdal Shiraz.

A winemaker since 2017, Juandré has been working as a junior winemaker at Diemersdal since 2014.

He studied winemaking at the Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute.

The five finalists each of the 40th Diners Club Winemaker and 20th Young Winemaker of the Year awards have recently been announced. Diners Club introduced the Winemaker of the Year award to encourage local winemakers to raise the standard of wines produced in South Africa.

The Young Winemaker of the Year award was established to encourage winemakers under the age of 30 to develop their skills, express their individuality, and add to the future prestige of South African wines internationally. The awards focus on quality and recognition of excellence and are regarded as the country’s most prestigious and well-respected wine industry competition.

While other awards focus on just the wine, the Diners Club Winemaker and Young Winemaker of the Year awards celebrate the skills and talent of the vintners. The awards are presented to the winemakers who produce a wine that the judging panel considers to be the best in a specified class.

The City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department says rumours that it charges an after-hour burial tariff for Muslims are not true.

“The department wishes to confirm that while such a tariff was initially proposed during the drafting of the 2020/’21 budget to encourage burials within working hours, as opposed to later in the evening and after sunset, the tariff was not implemented following feedback from the community,” Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien says.

Current tariffs are charged at R920 per grave, irrespective of day or time.

In the same vain, Dickson stressed that public transport plans would have to be put in place in the district plan before more development takes shape.

Another concern raised by Dickson is the uncontrolled land grabs taking place in Cape Town presently, worryingly so in Kraaifontein.

“Does the City have plans to address this issue now and in the future, and what are those plans?”

Dickson suggested that the City identify open pieces of City-owned land to install services on, for people to build their huts on, while awaiting formal housing.

“Considering that Western Cape has a backlog of 600 000 government houses, it would be impossible to catch up. Alternative plans will have to be put in place,” Dickson said.

Nieuwoudt agreed that the land grabs in Cape Town is currently out of control but that Covid-19 regulations prevent the City from removing land occupiers.

“The City’s hands are tied until regulations are lifted, whence it can obtain court interdicts. The Maroela project in Bloekombos would have provided 2 500 houses, but was lost in one weekend of land grabbing,” she said.

City official, Erica Naudé added that the City is in the process of looking at land to develop low-cost housing opportunities and that models of providing serviced land are being investigated.

Insofar as road upgrades is concerned, Nieuwoudt said property developers, in

terms of developmental agreements, are responsible for building supporting roads and infrastructure, as has been the case in many past developments in Brackenfell.

Insofar as Kruispad is concerned, Nieuwoudt confirmed that the design of the Kruispad upgrade has been completed.

“We have to now wait to see what development is planned on the adjoining Crammix land,” she said.

Property owner, Sean Johnson said more community services such as police stations for instance was needed in a rapidly growing suburb.

“Quick access to Brackenfell police station is currently impossible in the congestion of peak hour traffic in Brackenfell Boulevard.”

He suggested a traffic signal at the intersection.

Property owners stressed the fact that double lanes and a better broader service lane is crucial for Brackenfell Boulevard.

This however would only be prudent if the Brackenfell Boulevard N1 bridge, belonging to Sanral, is broadened.

However, Nieuwoudt confirmed that the upgrade of the Brackenfell Boulevard bridge was not on the table presently.

“Sanral is of the opinion that the bridge is landlocked and used by many only to gain access to the N1 via Frans Conradie. Sanral’s proposal is that the planned R300 extension to Durbanville be seen as a way to alleviate traffic on Brackenfell Boulevard by providing an alternative access route to the N1.”

Girl (16) nominated for international peace prize ESMÉ ERASMUS Ashlyn Klinkradt with teenager from Durbanville is her brother, David. one of 142 nominees from 42 different countries for the International Children’s Peace Prize 2020.

The 16-year-old Ashlyn Klinkradt, a Grade 10 learner at Fairmont High School, was nominated by the Chaeli Campaign for her contribution through her charity organisation Raising Hope SA (RHSA).

The prestigious International Children’s Peace Prize is annually awarded to a child who has made a special effort to promote children’s rights and better the situation of vulnerable children.

The three finalists of the International Children’s Peace Prize 2020 were announced last Friday.

Although Ashlyn was not one of them, she says she “is humbled to have been nominated among young people who are doing such amazing work.”

On her seventh birthday, Ashlyn asked friends to donate R7 for her birthday instead of buying gifts. This marked the beginning of her dedicated efforts to raise funds for and create awareness around youth with disabilities.

“My friends are all very supportive and a couple of friends are involved in our committees and fundraisers,” Ashlyn says.

“Covid-19 has affected us in multiple ways, in that we have lost sponsors and we have been unable to hold our normal fundraisers so raise the money needed to be able to run our projects.

“With lockdown we also had a lot more requests for food. We were able to do a couple of fundraisers and in lockdown we were able to send out around 300 food parcels to families affected by disability, but we are still struggling with funds,” she says.

A virtual celebration for a real difference T

he Covid-19 pandemic has directed this year’s Blisters for Bread charity walk, which is hosted by the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) and Lucky Star, digitally.

While the pandemic does not allow the popular charity walk to continue with its original format, PSFA invites the public to join them in the fight against hunger by entering and participating in their own walk with family and friends from their communities until Sunday 8 November.

Entry to this virtual event costs R60 and are available for purchase from Quicket. By entering, partici-

pants will enable PSFA to provide 24 school children effected by poverty with a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch daily.

Apart from the entry to the walk, the R60 ticket also includes access to the celebratory concert featuring Jarrad Rickets, Craig Lucas and Palesa Xloa Toto which takes place on Sunday 8 Novmber at 13:00.

Tickets to watch the concert are also available to people who do not want to participate in the walk.

Book drive kicks off soon THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

T

he average learner needs about 10 writing books during the academic year and these books can be expensive for most learners from Kraaifontein who come from underprivileged backgrounds.

Some of them are raised by single parents or grandparents who are dependent on social grants.

“Some parents have to pay school fees that are in arrears to get their child’s report card while burdened by the cost of school shoes and uniforms and still having to supply the basic needs of the household.

“School books will definitely not be a priority, not because parents do not want to buy them, but because they cannot afford them early in January,” Peter Goeiman, head of department for English at Scottsdene High School, says.

Goeiman kicks off the school’s third annual book drive to provide needy learners at the school with writing books later this year.

In previous years the drive managed to secure books for over 450 learners through donations from residents.

“In January we managed to secure over 870 books, and more were donated as time went.”

When Goeiman started this initiative in 2018 he discovered that most of the conflict and stress in the classroom arose because learners did not have writing books for every subject.

“The conflict arises when teachers get frustrated when learners do not have books and the learners become aggressive because they are vulnerable and feel powerless as they do not have control over their situation,” Goeiman explains.

This is when he started using social media to ask for help from ex-learners and teachers of the school, as well as residents to donate books or money.

People who choose to contribute money can do so directly into the school’s bank account, which is monitored by a bursar.

“A child that has a writing book for every subject is a proud child. This has a positive impact on their self-image, the general behaviour and discipline in the classroom.”

The community has been exceptional in their support.

Interested members can contribute a basic 72-page examination book.

Besides books and money, Goeiman says people can also contribute basic stationery.

After it has been launched, the project will continue throughout the year.

Vandalism at recreational facilities cost City millions The City’s parks and recreation department says it has suffered great losses during the past year due to vandalism of community facilities.

Theft and arson also deprived communities of much-needed services.

Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien says almost R17 million was lost due to vandalism and theft at facilities, among other things.

“The department manages and maintains community centres, sports fields, district parks, outdoor gyms and play parks, resorts, indoor centres and beaches, swimming and tidal pools and cemeteries. People have vandalised the infrastructure, which impacts on service delivery and access to facilities.”

He says a recent report to the community service and health portfolio committee highlighted losses for the period 1 July 2019 – 31 August 2020. “Theft and vandalism not only cause damage to infrastructure, but also deprive communities of municipal services for months at a time, and endanger the lives of staff and residents.

@thab_journo Local non-profit organisation, The Umtshayelo Foundation (Tuf), will soon offer its beneficiaries the opportunity to gain skills in the information and communications technology (ICT) through a soon-to-be-launched IT Hub. Tuf is a Christian based non-profit organisation focused on transforming communities by building bridges between those who have something to offer and those who are in need since 2013.

Some of its programmes include feeding the elderly, as well as an after school programme for the little ones.

The after school programme was established to prevent high school dropouts in the area.

“Since we opened our doors, we have been successful in this mandate and many children in the community have greatly benefited from programmes that we run here,” the organisation’s, Andrew Lamour says.

PROMOTION DISCOUNT Some of its previous beneficiaries have formed an alumni group, which helps its current learners in the programme by acting as mentors and being involved in tutoring sessions.

The hub, which is planned to be launched in April, will see 25 learners developing their IT skills per semester.

The Covid-19 pandemic has made its beneficiaries realise the magnitude of the programme, which is now nearing its final stages.

Lamour has no doubts that this programme will be a hit among its beneficiaries.

“We have been receiving a lot of support from the community and the kids like being here.”

He says the programme will allow about 25 learners in order to allow for individual attention.

“Learners will not be required to pay anything towards this programme, but parents who can afford to, will be asked to donate to keep the programme running.”

CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 NUUS OOR DIENSLEWERING Die sigbare opskerping van dienslewering is van die hoogste belang

’n Omvattende evaluering van die Stad se dienslewering in die MVSA-buurte is afgehandel. Dit het gehelp om te identifiseer hoe om basiese dienslewering te verbeter in hierdie gebiede, en die diensvlak te verhoog waar nodig. Ek vertrou dat ons sal wys hoe hierdie gemeenskappe kan lyk as ons saamwerk as Een Stad Tesame.

‘n Totaal van 80 projekte om gemeenskapsfasiliteite en -infrastruktuur op te knap, wat meer as 200 bedryfsprojekte behels, is vir befondsing en uitvoering geïdentifiseer.

In November begin ons die burgemeestersprogram vir sigbare diensleweringsopskerping (MVSA) om die Stad se bestaande COVID-19ekonomiese herstelstrategie en die herlewingsplan vir die Kaapstad- sentrale gebied aan te vul.

In die komende weke, gaan ons: • buurtbestuurders in die 23 gebiede aanstel wat saam met gebiedskoördineringspanne en subrade sal werk aan sigbare diensopskerping • bykomende wetstoepassingsbeamptes in sleutelbuurte ontplooi • blitsskoonmaakingrypings doen om vulliskwessies en onwettige storting in probleemgebiede aan te pak.

Die MVSA-program ter waarde van R200 miljoen is gemik op die opskerping van pogings om die lewensgehalte, veiligheid en die omgewing van gemeenskappe in die 23 geïdentifiseerde areas dwarsoor die metro te verbeter.

Hierdie gebiede is oor die algemeen laerinkomstebuurte waar groter koördinering van dienslewering nodig is om ernstige maatskaplike uitdagings die hoof te bied.

Die Stad lewer sy dienste op voetsoolvlak en dit is vir ons duidelik dat die stand van die ekonomie benard is – die impak daarvan in ons gemeenskappe is duidelik sigbaar. Dit is vererger deur Covid-19 en die verwante inperkingsregulasies wat die Stad se diensleweringsbedrywighede beperk het.

Hoewel die Grondwet sleuteldiensleweringshefbome aan die nasionale regering opdra – insluitende polisiëring, howe, skuilings vir haweloses en treindienste – is ons daartoe verbind om alles wat ons kan binne ons basiese diensleweringsmandaat te doen, terwyl ons saam met ander regeringsvlakke werk.

Deur die koördinering van dienslewering op gemeenskapsvlak beoog ons om plaaslike oplossings vir plaaslike kwessies te verseker. Gebiedsambassadeurs word ook in elke buurt aangestel om hierdie poging te ondersteun.

As burgemeester gaan ek die vordering baie goed dophou en ek het amptenare gevra om gereeld aan die burgemeesterskomitee verslag te doen.

Oor die volgende paar maande gaan die eerste fase van die projek in 13 buurte begin. Hierdie gebiede sluit die volgende in: Bellville-sakekern, Atlantissakekern, Lotus Park, Bishop Lavis-sakekern, Bonteheuwel, Hanover Park, Manenberg, Ocean View, Uitsig, Wynberg, Nyanga- stedelike node, Monwabisi Park, en Harare.

Daarna sal hierdie inisiatief volgende jaar in die volgende gebiede voortgesit word: Mitchells Plain, Durbanville-openbarevervoerwisselaar, Kraaifonteinsakekern, Delft, Kuilsrivier-sakekern, Nolungile, Nonqubela, Bo-Kaap, Goodwood- en Parow-sakekern.

Afrikaans is steeds nuttig, al is als Engels Wie, sou jou dogtertjie of seuntjie sê, is die mees invloedryke vrou in hul lewe?

Die kanse is goed dat dit hul mamma is. Moet jy jou kind in hul moedertaal, Afrikaans, grootmaak, of is dit beter om hom of haar van die begin af in Engels te laat skoolgaan? Is Engels werklik die universele taal wat mense toegang gee tot beter werksgeleenthede?

Dis van die vrae wat aan die orde gekom het op die Taalraad se Vrouedagwebinaar met die tema “Afrikaans as ’n waardevolle hulpbron – selfs al verengels die skole en universiteite”.

Vroue, spesifiek mammas, kom dikwels voor moeilike besluite te staan en moet daarom bedag wees op hul keuses en die gevolge van hierdie keuses.

Vroue het soveel invloed op die vorming van hul eie kinders en dié van ander vroue in die gemeenskap. In die meeste gevalle spandeer mammas die meeste tyd met die pasgeborene en byna al baba se ervarings word deur mamma en pappa geskep en gevorm.

In die eerste lewensjare reageer die kind se brein goed op stimulasie. Hulle leer sommer maklik tale aan – om te praat en te lees. So, wat is dan die beste opsie vir jou kind? Om hom of haar in die moedertaal te laat skoolgaan of in Engels?

Moedertaalonderrig gaan om die bemagtiging van mense; daar is dikwels ’n direkte verband tussen die ekonomiese ontwikkeling van gemeenskappe en die mate waartoe hul taal ontwikkel het. Tale speel ’n belangrike rol in die daaglikse lewe van mense, nie net as kommunikasiemiddel nie, maar ook as deel van hul identiteit, kultuur en tradisies.

Akademici is dit eens dat begrippe die beste in die moedertaal oorgedra word, veral in die grondslagfase. Te vroeë oorskakeling na ’n taal wat nie die moedertaal is nie, kan katastrofies wees, en hierdie kinders sukkel in die meeste gevalle om by te hou by die kinders wat onderrig in hul moedertaal ontvang.

Die ontwikkelingsvlak van ’n kind se moedertaal is ’n sterk voorloper vir die aanleer van ’n tweede of derde taal, aangesien begrippe dan makliker van die moedertaal na ander tale oorgedra word.

Tydens hierdie aanlyn seminaar, wat met Vrouedag saamgeval het, is ons andermaal daaraan herinner dat die taal wat kinders by hul moeders hoor, hul emosies, kritiese denke en vaardighede vir meertaligheid vorm en dat moeders daarom sentraal staan in die debat oor moedertaalonderrig. Hoe verarmend is dit nie om slegs één taal magtig te wees nie?

Die ouer wat verkies dat sy of haar kind in sy moedertaal skoolgaan, moet geprys word, want so verseker hulle die vestiging van meertaligheid. Die Taalraad is dit eens dat ons inheemse tale en meertaligheid bevorder moet word.

Meertaligheid gee betekenis aan jou lewe want dit skep nuwe geleenthede en stel jou in staat om na ander mense uit te reik. Dit dien as ’n brugbouer om ’n beter toekoms vir al die land se kinders te skep. Meertaligheid en die ontwikkeling van die inheemse tale behoort ’n prioriteit vir die regering te wees.

Dis ’n mite dat Afrikaans minderwaardig is. Afrikaans word deur 6,8 miljoen mense gepraat en is die derde grootste taal in Suid-Afrika naas Zoeloe. Ek is oortuig daarvan dat Afrikaans ’n hulpbron van onskatbare waarde is, al verengels skole en universiteite.

Die taal is in ons hande. Neem eienaarskap van jóú taal!

Veral die huisvroue het geskitter met artikels wat lankal staan en stof vergaar het en met net ’n oproep hul probleem iets van die verlede kon maak.

Adamus Stemmet het ’n e-pos gestuur met die volgende: “In die verlede moes ek ’n stukkende yskas en wasmasjien laat wegry en nog betaal daarvoor en hier doen julle dit gratis en dit vir ’n goeie doel. Mooi, manne! Welgedaan!” ’n Groot bonus was dat die ontvangs by elke huis so spontaan en vriendelik was.

Artikels het oor ’n wye verskeidenheid gewissel van ’n treadmill en ’n duikgordel tot grassnyers en hope mikrogolfoonde.

Die bestuur het ons verder bederf met ’n container en nou beskik ons oor genoeg spasie om onverpoos te werk aan die tekort van R150 000.

Daar was ook ’n ligter sy.

Met ons aankoms by ’n huis het die man, ’n pensioenaris, die deur oopgemaak.

Snaaks genoeg, die oomblik toe ons ontmoet, het hy vir ons albei as ’n platjie voorgekom. Die gesprek gaan toe só: “Goeiemôre. U is meneer X. Ons is Ferdie en SW. “Vrou,” roep die man so oor sy skouer. “Kom kyk hier. Laat ek jou voorstel aan die twee strippers van Aristea.”

I refer to the article “Pothole backlog is being adressed in City News (October 2020/ Issue 53) as published in TygerBurger on 14 October.

According to this article “wet roads are one of the key reasons why potholes form” – pure rubbish!

In our street, Orchid Road, Tygerdal, potholes appear annually at exactly the same places due to poor workmanship! Potholes are not prepared properly as it should be.

I am not sure if the City uses contractors as part of their job creation campaign.

If they do, perhaps they should send at least one “inspector” to evaluate the work. If they do it themselves then they should really train their people properly.

The last paragraph states that “17 415 potholes were attended to at a cost of over R43 million” which means about R2 500 per pothole.

Somewhat ridiculous I would say.

Please stop wasting the taxpayers’ money.

Stad moet heffing vir droogte skrap Met verwysing na die artikel “City ‘finally’ relaxes water tariffs” in die TygerBurger van 28 Oktober.

Een paragraaf het spesifiek my oog gevang, naamlik “City water costs on average 4c per litre in comparison to R10 per litre for shop-bought water”.

Ek weet nie waar die skrywer of persoon wat die inligting verskaf het sy gebottelde water koop nie, aangesien ek R8 per hervulling van ’n 5-liter bottel betaal en Woensdae betaal pensioenarisse R7,50. Ek koop dit self vir drinkwater.

Pleks dat die Stad Kaapstad sy waterheffing verwyder wat vir die droogte ingestel is, maar nee, hulle gee ons belastingbetalers 55c per kiloliter. Hoeveel kry hulle net nie uit die waterheffing nie? I rest my case.

Hoe kan jy met jou gewete saamleef?

Ek het met skok gelees dat katte vergiftig word (“Cats poisoned”, TygerBurger, 7/10).

Ek het self katte (indoor cats) en word dikwels verpes deur ander katte in ons tuin en by my voëlvoerder, maar sal nooit ’n dier vergiftig nie.

Ek wonder of diegene besef watter verskriklike pynlike dood dit vir ’n dier is? Hoe kan jy met jou gewete saamleef? Kry vir jou ’n hond en katte sal nie naby jou tuin en voëlvoerders kom nie.

Mense wat katte het, wat nie indoor cats wil hê nie, kan uitvind oor ’n heining, soortgelyk aan ’n elektriese heining (vir katte), wat jy kan installeer sodat jou katte vrylik in jou tuin kan beweeg, niemand pla nie en ook nie doodgery word nie.

Diere kan nie vergiftig word omdat hul eienaars selfsugtig is nie. Kry ’n gewete!

by Kaapstad ’n antwoord gekry dat niemand weet wanneer ons biblioteek weer gaan oopmaak nie.

Toe lees ek verlede week in die TygerBurger dat die Parow-biblioteek adverteer dat sy dienste nou beskikbaar is – nie dat ek boeke kan uitneem nie, maar vir studie en om op die internet te gaan.

Hoekom kan ek poskantoor toe gaan en daar goed gaan afhaal, winkel toe gaan en daar kruideniersware gaan koop, slaghuis toe gaan en vleis gaan koop en restaurant toe gaan en daar gaan eet?

Oral waar mense aan alles vat, maar ek kan nie biblioteek toe gaan en boeke uitneem nie. By skole vat kinders en onderwysers heeldag aan mekaar se boeke.

Ek weet nie onder watter departement, ek veronderstel KPA, die biblioteek val nie, maar het iemand al vir hulle gesê hoe lyk dit by die Goodwood-biblioteek?

Dis ’n brandgevaar. Die onkruid staan menshoogte en is kurkdroog en julle wat so sê daar moenie gras gesny word nie, daar is ’n groot verskil tussen onkruid en blomme.

Die biblioteek was maande lank toe, is toe nuut oorgedoen en was vir ’n paar maande oop en nou sê hulle dis gevandaliseer. Deur wie?

Maar helaas, jammer om te sê, die noordelike voorstede is een groot vullishoop. Wat maak die Stad Kaapstad dan met die Tygerberg se belasting en pypbelasting dat hier niks gedoen word nie?

En, ek dink dis tyd dat almal nou weer uit hul gate kruip en aangaan met die lewe. Hoe gouer, hoe beter.

Talking about sexual health not taboo There should be no shame in needing sexual and reproductive healthcare.

The provincial department of health offers a wide range of sexual and reproductive healthcare services – from sexually transmitted infection (STI) education, testing or treatment; family planning (contraception); safe and legal termination of pregnancy; fertility care; voluntary medical male circumcision; to treatment for cancers of the reproductive system.

Nurse Cathleen Grant from the Bellville Reproductive Health Centre says she often counsels people who are “afraid” or “ashamed” to use the service due to stigma associated with it.

She says patients must feel comfortable and she reminds them that the service is confidential and safe.

“I treat patients how I would expect someone to treat my own children, especially with my younger patients. I have treated patients who told me that they had hesitated to seek help at first.’’

Having worked at the centre for close to a decade, Grant is passionate about counselling and empowering people to build habits that can positively impact their reproductive health. Many young people visit the facility for advice. Grant ensures that they understand the effects of poor reproductive health and the services available to them.

“I’ll always tell patients that I

We want a healthy South Africa, but we need to be compliant and follow health advice and treatment given by trained medical practitioners.”

A lack of sexual and reproductive healthcare services and education can lead to ill health.

Grant says this includes the spread of STIs, unplanned pregnancies, unsafe termination of pregnancies and maternal deaths, among other things. There are long-term effects for not treating an STI for both men and women, says Grant. “We can’t tell people how to live their lives, but we can help them to make good decisions.”

Other services available at reproductive health facilities include: cervical cancer care, contraception, infertility services, male reproductive health services, family planning, menopause care, free pap smear services, termination of pregnancy service and testicular cancer care.

The provincial health department provides a range of free reproductive health services at its facilities. To access these services, visit any Western Cape Government primary healthcare facility (clinic). To avoid long waiting times, call the facility to make an appointment during the week. If you had unprotected sex, ask for emergency contraception at your nearest participating pharmacy or emergency centre.

Broodbome word by opedag verkoop Die Wes-Kaapse tak van die Broodboomvereniging van Suid-Afrika hou sy jaarlikse opedag op Saterdag 7 November.

Volgens Johan Kotze, woordvoerder, is daar ’n verskeidenheid broodboomspesies teen billike pryse te koop. “Skaars blou plante soos Encephalartos Laevifolius en Eugenemarais, asook Cerinus, Cupidus, Dyerianus, en Joubertina Blou Longifolius sal verkoop word,” sê hy.

Hy sê ander skaars en eksotiese plante sal ook te koop wees.

“Die verkoping vind plaas by ’n tuiskwekery met ’n verskeidenheid plante teen uiters billike pryse.

Hierdie plante sluit in bromelias, vetplante, ’n verskeidenheid struike, grondbedekkers, meerjarige en eenjarige tuinplante. Die dag bied ’n uitstekende geleentheid aan tuiskwekers om deel te wees van georganiseerde plantverkope. Enige tuiskweker van enige ander plante kan en is welkom om ook plante te verkoop,” sê hy.

Durbanville-laerskoolseun speel in Suidooster-sepie ESMÉ ERASMUS

Laerskoolseun van Durbanville het vandeesweek sy verskyning gemaak in ’n gasrol in die sepie Suidooster op kykNET. Daniël Snyman (11) is ’n graad 5-leerder aan die Laerskool Durbanville, en die seun van Christo Snyman van die sanggroep Die Broers.

Daniël se eerste verskyning in Suidooster was gister (3 November) en hy sal ongeveer drie weke lank in Suidooster te sien wees.

Hy speel die rol van die 7-jarige Pieter, die seun van Lukas (Louw Venter) en Robin (Vicky Davis), ’n egpaar wat van mekaar vervreemd is.

In die sepie begin Lukas by Bianca (Simone Biscombe) betrokke raak, wie se dogtertjie Stella in dieselfde skool as Pieter is.

Volgens sy ma, Danel, ’n arbeidsterapeut in Durbanville, het Daniël vroeg vanjaar oorklankingswerk gedoen vir ’n rol in die Turkse reeks Vierspel Vuurspel, wat sedert Maart op e.tv. uitgesaai word.

Hy is daarna tydens inperking deur die Optin Talent-agentskap genooi om ’n video in te stuur vir ’n oudisie vir die rol van Pieter in Suidooster en het toe die rol losgeslaan.

Daniël neem drama by die skool en word gereeld as kategoriewenner in drama by die internasionale Tygerberg-eisteddfod aangewys.

Daniël het ook die rol gespeel van Danny in die TV-reeks Projek Dina, wat in April op kykNET uitgesaai is, asook twee jaar gelede die rol van ’n ekstra in ’n oorsese rolprent.

Maar dis eintlik sy ouer broers, Eloff, ’n graad 9-leerder aan die Hoërskool Durbanville, en Christoff, ’n graad 7-leerder aan die Laerskool Durbanville, wat die dramagogga hom laat byt het, meen Danel.

Sy ouer broers doen gereeld werk vir die Optim Talent-agentskap.

Eloff is bekend vir sy rol in die Afrikaanse rolprent Liewe Kersfeesvader en sy rol as Klein Benjamin in Fiela se Kind.

Daniël is gek oor sport, veral rugby en krieket, en lees graag. Hy is ook lief vir diere en het “omtrent ’n ark by die huis”, sê sy ma.

Daar is hasies, duiwe, vinkies . . . en hy het nou net ’n babahondjie gekry.

“Hy het die skiet van die tonele verskriklik geniet – hy het sommer die ander akteurs se woorde ook geken,” sê Danel.

“Ons moes party dae maar op ons tande byt om als ingepas te kry. Hy moes ook sy skoolwerk inhaal, maar ons het gevoel die lewenslesse wat hy daar leer is meer werd as ’n dag op die skoolbanke. Sy wêreld het baie groter geraak,” sê sy.

“Die span het hom baie mooi ontvang en op die hande gedra. Dit was baie positief. Daniël wil natuurlik nou eendag niks anders as akteur raak nie,” sê sy.

Daniël Snyman saam met sy bekende pa, Christo Snyman van die sanggroep Die Broers.

Symphonic masterpieces in miniature After seven months in lock-down, the musicians of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) have broken out and gone live. Four chamber music concerts, supported by the City of Cape Town, were recorded in October at Erin Hall, Rondebosch, in front of a small and appreciative audience.

The works performed showcased the musicians in a chamber music environment. The results, ‘‘Symphonic masterpieces in miniature’’, will be streamed throughout November.

CPO head Louis Heyneman says, “this was the only way we could ensure our supporters could hear good music which our musicians loved performing.”

Works included some of the most loved pieces of the symphonic repertoire which were arranged for chamber groups such as Beethoven Concerto, Mozart Clarinet Concerto and Elgar’s Cello Concerto all with a string quintet.

Online subscriptions for the four concerts are R320, and single tickets R100 each. Tickets are available from Quicket.

Each concert will be streamed from 20:00 daily from Thursday to the following Monday, starting from 5 November.

‘Ways of Dying’ presented by Baxter Theatre Centre Zakes Mda’s acclaimed first novel, Ways of Dying, will be presented by the Baxter Theatre Centre and University of Cape Town’s Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies (CTDPS) at the Baxter Flipside for six performances from Tuesday 10 to Saturday 14 November at 19:00, with a Saturday matinee at 15:00.

Adapted and directed by Lara Foot, who directed the work 20 years ago at The Market Theatre, the cast is made up of 14 fourth-year students from the CTDPS. Head of CTDPS, Sara Matchet, says it’s been a challenging year in terms of teaching.

“The collaboration with The Baxter and with Lara Foot as director promises to offer our graduating acting students an experience that will make up for what has been lost.

And a theatrical treat for local audiences to experience this work and creatives invol-

ved.” The story follows Toloki, an eccentric and dignified professional mourner, who meets his childhood friend, Noria, at her son’s funeral. They fall in love and move in together, each one teaching the other how to heal and live. Performances are limited to 50% capacity with Covid-19 protocols observed. Wear a mask and arrive an hour before the start of the performance to avoid delays.

Die administrateurs van ander hoofstroom-somersportsoorte handhaaf nog ’n stilswye. Vroeër vandeesweek het die skole nog geen inligting oor die tennis- en atletiekbeplannings vir 2021 ontvang nie.

Simpson cracks nod to tee it up at Sun City

Durbanville amateur golfer Sam Simpson will spearhead tee it up at the 110th South African Open Championship at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City from Thursday 3 December Sunday 6 December.

Sam Simpson, along with four of South Africa’s most promising amateur talents, will join a star-studded field in the South African Open Championship at the Gary Player Country Club from Thursday 3 December - Sunday 6 December.

The South African Golf Association (Saga) announced the amateur quintet exempt for qualifying in the R19.5 million tournament, supported by Nedbank and Sun International and co-sanctioned by the Sunshine and European Tours.

“As the custodians of the SA Open, we are extremely proud and honoured to offer our top talents this marvellous opportunity to test themselves in a championship of this stature,” said Saga acting president, Martin Saaiman.

“We are delighted to announce that our reigning SA Amateur champion and No. 1 Casey Jarvis will spearhead the group. He will be joined by fellow GolfRSA National Squad members Kyle de Beer, Yurav Premlall, (Sam) Simpson and Christo Lamprecht,” announced Saaiman, confirming Simpson’s spot in the second oldest golf tournament in the world behind The Open.

The 110th playing of the South African Open Championship was announced on Thursday 22 October and the Saga selection committee made their final selection the following day.

“Since all our national tournaments were cancelled at the end of March due to the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown, we had no choice but to base our selection on the rankings as it stood at the end of March when our tournaments were shut down. Martin Vorster, who is second in the rankings, had advised us that he would be unavailable for selection because he is still recovering from a wrist injury, so the next four spots went to Kyle, Yurav, Sam and Christo, res-

pectively ranked third, fourth, fifth and sixth.

“We wish these five amateurs well as they test themselves against a strong international field at the iconic Gary Player Country Club.”

Durbanville’s Simpson made his debut in the tournament at Randpark Golf Club in January.

GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn said the amateurs are privileged to be offered an incredible opportunity to advance their careers.

“We are very proud of the fact that all five amateurs selected by Saga are members of the GolfRSA National Squad,” he said.

“They have all worked extremely hard and achieved excellent results and they are very deserving of the opportunity to tee it up in the SA Open.

“Competing in an event of this stature builds character and the chance to compete against the best professionals from South Africa and Europe is invaluable to the growth and development of their careers.

We know they will savour the opportunity.

The quality of these young men and many like them on our GolfRSA circuit is a direct result of the excellent structures in South African golf. The South African Open Championship will complete a thrilling three-week run of tournaments co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and European Tour, following the Joburg Open at Randpark Golf Club and the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek.

Stormers wear support on sleeves The Stormers are showing their support for breast cancer and testicular cancer awareness by wearing a special logo on the sleeve of their match kit until the end of this month.

The logo is a combination of the traditional pink ribbon used for breast cancer awareness and blue “Movember” moustache which signifies testicular cancer awareness.

Globally, two million cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year.

The diagnosis has an indescribable emotional impact on every patient, but also on friends, family and colleagues.

To support the various initiatives, DHL, who are the Stormers’ title sponsors, are seeking to extend the awareness to the greater public and have decaled their aircraft fleet in Africa (and across the globe) with the ribbon creative to show their support and com-

mitment to the causes.

Both causes have been integrated into the Stormers match day playing kit for the duration of the season in October and November, displaying a combination of the traditional pink ribbon and blue “Movember” moustache.

Stormers captain Siya Kolisi said the team is proud to be raising awareness for such worthy causes.

“Breast cancer and testicular cancer are major health issues and we as a team want to do everything we can to show our support for this campaign, along with our sponsors DHL,” he said.

Stormers coach John Dobson said that the values behind this awareness campaign reflect what the Stormers players and management would like to be about as a team.
