LOCAL NPO: FOCUS ON READING AND WRITING

he fundamentals of any school-going child remains the ability to read and write. Empowering not only children, but their parents and neighbours as well is the main aim of Athlone-based non-profit organisation (NPO) Reading and Writing Solutions. Founded by retired teacher and principal, Jeff Paulse six years ago, the organisation works at more than 100 schools across the province supporting all grades.
“Initially we started with Grade 6 learners in respect to a request from our principals of participating schools. Currently our reading tutors are able and trained to assist both primary and high school learners. We do comprehensive training in the Caps curriculum at our training workshops,” says Paulse. He started the organisation after retiring. Many parents had requested his assistance with tutoring and this is when he realised the need. “Many parents came to me for assistance with individual children. I realised I can’t continue to help one person at a time so I
changed the way I did it by training the parents to assist the child,” he says. “Education is a team effort where you need the positive input of three important role players: the teacher, the parent and the learner. Parents are the child’s first teacher. As a former principal and educator with more than 48 years of teaching experience, I have learnt that the role of any parent in the education of any child is key, and more than important,” says Paulse. “If we equip the parent, the child benefits at school and at home. The current homeschooling scenario, caused by the inevitable
lockdown, highlighted the need to equip parents. I realised this many years ago, hence I started this organisation to focus on training parents to teach effectively at home.” With his background as an English teacher, Paulse continued to equip himself with the necessary training and passed this on to volunteer tutors who go out and assist the learners in need. “All learning involves reading,” says Paulse. “Reading is the fundamental skill needed to unlock all other school subjects.
