FOTO: NEELS KLEYNHANS / NK PHOTOGRAPHY

MATRIC BALL: THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMEL’S BACK

More learners speak out DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

hile vitriolic political sentiments and racial division were raging outside the school gates at Brackenfell High School, voices in the local community, particularly the youth, spoke in different tones. Many matric learners at the school, white and of colour, all writing their final matric exam, have been somewhat disillusioned by the scandal, while others who claim to have experienced racism at the

school in the past, saw it coming. The race debacle all started with a mother wanting to do something special for her matric daughter; a to-be-doomed masked ball only attended by white learners; a social media post from an angry father, and the rest is history. The mother in question says it was never her intention to exclude learners of colour. “Covid had cost the matrics their entire matric year, all the traditions were lost, they lost everything and I was heart wrenched for my daughter who had been looking forward to her matric farewell for years. tention was to do something special for her to give her one special memory. In my wildest nightmares I could not have imagined that it would spiral out of control this way to cause this much division,” says the mom who organised the event along with other parents. She spoke to TygerBurger on the condition of anonymity. She denies that only white matrics were invited. “It was originally organised for my daughter and her friends at a private venue, but because there was space for more children, we circulated the invitation to other lear-

ners, which included persons of colour. I even started a WhatsApp group, which was widely circulated and open to anyone. The only problem is that the venue could only accommodate 100 people and tickets were limited. It was sold on a first come first served basis. In the end only 42 matric learners out of the total group of 260 from the school attended the function, the rest of the 72 participants were learners from other schools and even partners already out of school,” she says.
