On Monday 24th of Feb, workers at Linfox held a stop work meeting to stand up against displeasure with their employer.
Workers weren’t happy with the way management was operating and alleged misconduct that was occurring.
Workers took a stand and were able to achieve their desired result.
Many ongoing issues still need resolving, but it pays to take a stand.
And the power and strength of a site like Linfox it proves that being in the union and collective action pays off.
After walking off the job 3 times and countless activist efforts by the workforce to secure safe wages at Ventia – a letter received by State Secretary Tim Dawson from the state government appears to have gotten us closer to securing an in-principal agreement.
Ventia's Court Security and Custodial Officers earn up to 24% less than their counterparts under similar contracts – pay disparity that continues to undermine staff retention and safety in a high-risk work environment.
We commend the state government for working with us to secure a fair wage offer. And we are grateful to the government for
working through outstanding issues.
As the Government is currently in care-taker mode until following the state election we’re currently at a standstill – but there is no doubting the TWU members’ strength and determination is what lead to this result.
For now, TWU members are holding up their end of the bargain and expect that Ventia will too if Labor is re-elected on March 8th.
The strong TWU membership at Ventia shows that taking action achieves results. More updates to come following the state election.
Following two 24 hour strikes of TWU members at K&S Fuels – negotiations between the workers and the company have moved forward.
TWU members from K&S Energy Fuels walked off the job twice in one week. Strikes that impacted supply chains and fuel supply to major service stations, including AMPOL and Costco.
Before the workers took strike action, the wage offer wasn’t a lot.
The company has since increased that offer significantly.
There are still unresolved issues that the bargaining team is working through.
But this is another example of how collective action can pay off.
More updates to come.
If you’re a transport worker in Western Australia, your vote on March 8 isn’t just about politics—it’s about your safety, your job security, and your future.
For months, we’ve been asking one simple question: Which party is standing up for transport workers? The answer is clear.
The Cook Labor Government has put transport front and centre, investing in better training, safer roads, and infrastructure that directly benefits the industry. But we need more.
From dangerous regional highways to a worsening truck driver shortage, transport workers are facing real challenges—and we need a government willing to step up.
That’s why we’re calling on transport workers to back a government that has listened, invested, and delivered—while demanding even stronger action in the years ahead.
WA Labor has already made significant investments in transport infrastructure, safety, and workforce development.
Under the current Labor Government investment has been made in:
1. Truck driver amenities & parking bays
– Under the current Labor Government investment has been made in constructing more amenities and parking bays for longhaul drivers who need safe places to rest.
2. Overtaking lanes & road shoulder expansion – Repair of regional roads are high on our priorities and construction on 11 new overtaking lanes on the Great Northern Highway between Newman and Port Hedland have commended under the current Labor Government.
3. Improvements in the Owner Driver act – Major improvements to legislation that gives certainty to guideline rates for vehicles over 4.5 tonnes
This election some of the key commitments include:
► $17.4 million for Heavy Vehicle Driver Training – A direct response to the truck driver shortage, this funding will establish a training facility in Perth’s north, providing proper pathways into the industry.
► $125 million for regional road safety – Expanding the Regional Road Safe-
ty Program to improve dangerous roads and intersections.
► $17.7 million for new pedestrian crossings – Making WA roads safer for all users, including truck drivers.
► $1 million per annum for mental health programs – The industry’s high-pressure conditions take a toll and this allocated funding for industrial bodies to develop, implement and run mental health and suicide prevention program projects including Steering Healthy Minds, will aim to turn that around for transport workers.
► TAFE funding increases – Supporting new equipment and training facilities, including an expansion of Munster TAFE and funding for heavy vehicle driver training.
► Perth road upgrades – Major investments in the northern and southern suburbs to reduce congestion and improve freight efficiency.
These commitments have been hard-won through years of lobbying by transport workers and the TWU. But we can’t afford to stop here.
Despite these investments, transport workers are still being pushed to their limits. The TWU is demanding further action to ensure all transport workers have safe, secure, and fair conditions. This election, we’re calling for:
1. Mandatory illumination of trains – To improve visibility and prevent deadly crashes for truck drivers traveling at night.
2. More truck driver amenities & parking bays – Long-haul drivers need safe places to rest, that are clean and well maintained.
3. More overtaking lanes & road shoulder expansion – Too many regional roads remain unsafe, increasing the risk of fatal crashes.
4. Urgent action on the truck driver shortage – Labor’s training investment is a good start, but we need long-term workforce planning like an apprenticeship scheme.
5. Addressing dangerous goods transportation – Stronger regulations and enforcement to protect workers and the public.
6. Stronger labour rights in procurement policies – Ensuring local councils and government contracts support secure jobs with fair wages and conditions.
7. Owner Driver act to incorporate vehicles under 4.5 tonne – To legislate protections for gig workers and couriers under 4.5 tonne.
8. Legislation that improves the lives of workers – Transport workers deserve better protections across the board.
The transport industry keeps WA moving. But too often, the people behind the wheel— the truck drivers, bus drivers, couriers, and logistics workers—are ignored.
Labor has already made progress, investing in training, infrastructure, and safety measures that will directly benefit transport workers.
Meanwhile, their opponents have failed to present a credible plan to fix the issues we face.
This election, transport workers have a choice: support a government that has listened and delivered, or risk moving backward.
By voting for WA Labor on March 8, we’re not just backing the progress already made—we’re demanding more. More investment, more protections, and more action to make transport a safer and fairer industry for all.
Safe roads save lives. Strong regulations protect jobs. Make your vote count.
With the WA State Election just around the corner on March 8, the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) is calling for urgent action to create a fairer and safer industry for transport workers.
✅ Mandatory illumination of rail
✅ More truck driver amenities & parking bays on WA highways
✅ More overtaking lanes & road shoulder expansion on regional roads
✅ Strategies to address the truck driver shortage
A holistic approach to safety is needed, starting with better licensing and training to ensure all road users have the skills and awareness to navigate heavy vehicles safely.
There is a state election coming up on Saturday March 8th. Three members of the TWU are running in the election. David Michael in Balcatta, Magenta Marshall in Rockingham and Lorna Clarke in Butler.
We need to elect more people who have working people's interests in mind.
Transport is the backbone of our economy— safe roads save lives.
Lets make safety a priority this election. Speak up, ask the candidates where they stand on transport safety, and demand action.

In the lead-up to the 2025 WA State Election, TWU WA State Secretary, Tim Dawson, is answering key questions that matter to transport workers.
In these videos, Tim highlights the importance of truck driver training, greater awareness, and improved skills development to ensure a safer, more professional industry. And if bringing rail back in house will be better or worse for transport workers.
These are some of the discussions we've had in the lead-up to election day on March 8th
The Increase of tight bus schedules and traffic congestion are putting pressure on Transperth drivers to speed.
Data released by the Public Transport Authority showed bus drivers were issued 293 traffic infringements between July 2023 and June last year, a sharp increase on the previous financial year.
WA Bus Drivers feel an obligation to speed to ensure they can meet their unrealistic deadlines and deliver passengers on time.
The State Government and the department of transport needs too revisit how they go about rostering drivers, the drivers' spreadbreaks and timetables. That if drivers feel the need to speed to meet them, are unrealistic.
It is up to the department to set realistic schedules, NOT for the drivers to speed to meet them!

THE TWU SURVEYED OVER 2,000 AVIATION WORKERS, AND THE RESULTS ARE ALARMING:
The TWU surveyed over 2,000 aviation workers, and the results are alarming.
❌ Nearly 1 in 2 have been injured on the job ❌ 87% have been pressured to work unsafely From ground crew to cabin crew — workers are exhausted, overworked, and facing dangerous conditions — and safety standards for the public are plummeting.
This industry runs on skilled, experienced workers, but without stronger regulation and decent jobs, aviation will reach its breaking point. We need a Safe & Secure Skies Commission NOW.
International Women's Day Rally – MY RIGHTS, MY BODY, MY VOTE
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at the UnionsWA International Women’s Day Rally on Friday, February 28th, in Northbridge.
We heard powerful stories from women in the movement—stories of resilience, struggle, and the fight for fairer, safer workplaces. Their words were a reminder that while progress has been made, the fight for equality is far from over.
Together, we will keep pushing for real change. Stronger unions mean stronger rights for women!
In 2024 TWU members celebrated monumental legislative changes after decades of campaigning. TWU Members have fought for these laws out the front of Woolworths, Coles and Aldi. TWU Members have been a part of convoys and walked off the job in 2021 to help fight for these laws.
These new road transport laws, introduced in February 2024, are already having their impact on the transport industry.
Reforms that protect the rights of food and parcel delivery workers and legislate minimum standards to ensure fair pay and conditions.
The TWU has recently lodged an application to mandate timely payments so all road transport drivers and operators are paid within 30 days.
We've won funding for safer truck rest areas and we're delivering improvements to highways and groundbreaking training initiatives that address driver shortages and enhance road safety for everyone. And funding that improves mental health in the transport industry.
We're asking TWU members how important these laws are to your bottom line.
