WELCOME WELCOME BACK TO WOMEN WHO ROCK! August 3, 2022

The Two Ten Footwear Foundation is pleased to once again partner with Footwear News to present an exciting Women Who Rock program this evening, featuring a trio of entrepreneurs and innovators with intriguing stories to share. This is our third Women Who Rock event, an evening long-delayed by pandemic restrictions, and I have to say I’m especially delighted to welcome you here to the Plaza Hotel in person tonight.

Two Ten held its first public event in more than two years earlier this summer and we’re still easing back into in-person gatherings. The unintended hiatus of Women Who Rock only underscored the need for this kind of gathering: uplifting and forward-looking, yet rooted in our shared experience of the challenges that women in the footwear industry–even dynamic female founders like those you’ll meet tonight–still face.

In fact, Covid exposed a number of stresses that hit working women particularly hard. In the past two years Two Ten provided assistance to many female heads of households struggling to make ends meet due to reduced work hours or furloughs. At the same time they were losing child care options, taking on more duties tending to family members, and supervising remote learning for their kids.

We also heard from a number of women who didn’t lose their jobs but saw their career progress stall and watched some of their role models leaving the workforce entirely.

That’s when we began to explore ideas for a new educational program to support career development.

I’m pleased to announce that, with the help of seed funding from Footwear News, Two Ten is launching a new professional development grant for women today. These Two Ten “opportunity grants” will be available to women interested in mastering new skills or obtaining professional certifications to advance their careers. Experienced mentors from the Two Ten WIFI community are even stepping up to serve as volunteer career coaches during the grant application process.

This is an exciting launch for us and we thank Footwear News for believing in our vision. We know that women in footwear are all Women Who Rock.

Olympic Champion and President & Co-founder Saysh

Allyson Felix is the most decorated American Track & Field Olympian of all time after winning her bronze and gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics - her fifth and final Olympic games. Ms. Felix closes this chapter of her life with a mind-blowing, twentyseven global medals at the Olympics and World Championships and titles as both a World Record Holder and a Master’s World Record Holder.

Ms. Felix continued to make history in Tokyo by sporting racing spikes created by her company Saysh – becoming the first athlete to race in their own spikes. Launched in June 2021, Saysh not only aims to create a supportive community for women, but it also makes athletic-inspired footwear made for and by women, unlike most brands whose shoes are created based off of men’s feet and footwear. Ms. Felix exemplified that she is about more than just medals – she was running for change, equity, and acceptance for women and girls everywhere. Saysh sought out women-led, women-funded partners for their recent Series A fundraising round, which brought in $8 million and was led by the Gap Inc.owned Athleta brand.

Off the track, Ms. Felix is a fierce advocate for maternity rights for all women; she gave birth to her daughter Camryn in 2018.

In 2019 she wrote an opinion piece for The New York Times that called out Nike, her former sponsor, for not providing guaranteed protections for pregnant athletes and new moms. The public reaction to the piece put pregnancy discrimination in athletics in the spotlight. During the 2020 Olympics, Ms. Felix, alongside her new sponsor Athleta, created the Power of She Fund: Child Care Grant – a fund to assist mom-athletes with childcare while competing at the games.

Ms. Felix serves as a member of the Right To Play board hoping to raise awareness for underserved children in developing regions.

Chief Executive Officer & Co-founder Birdies

Bianca Gates is Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Birdies, the company that created a new category of footwear with stylish flats that are secretly slippers. Prior to Birdies, Ms. Gates was a Sales Executive at Facebook/Instagram, where she consulted with retail executives on organizational transformation, helping them leverage new technology, social media, and mobile devices to scale their businesses.

Ms. Gates is passionate about bringing women together to help them achieve their dreams. She started the first Lean In Circle with Sheryl Sandberg, which has now scaled to more than 40,000 Circles globally. She also advises early-stage founders and serves on the board of trustees at The Hamlin School, an all-girls independent school in San Francisco.

Ms. Gates is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine.

Chief Creative Officer & Founder Loeffler Randall

Jessie Loeffler (pronounced LEFF-Ler) Randall created her eponymous brand name in 2004 by cutting up her wedding invitation and assembling her middle and last names inside of a shoe. The brand was picked up in the first season by Bergdorf Goodman, and Ms. Randall went on to win the CFDA’s Swarovski Award for Accessory Design in 2007. Over the years, she and her business partner and husband, Brian Murphy, have expanded from footwear to include handbags, hair accessories, jewelry, and ready-to-wear. The brand opened its first store in New York City in March 2021. Today Loeffler Randall remains a tight knit, family-led business making distinctive pieces with the finest raw materials and time-honored techniques. The collection is currently sold at Bergdorf Goodman, NET-A-PORTER, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Shopbop, fine specialty stores, and the brand’s NYC flagship boutique and online store.
