Jim Issler Gala Chair’s Message
When we hear the term “pass the hat”, it brings to mind the simple idea of people coming together to help someone in need. Seventy-six years ago, a group of shoe salesmen in Boston did just that for peers who lost their jobs in the Depression and were struggling to make ends meet. Once a week, they would pass a hat among themselves, tossing in whatever change they could spare to help a fellow salesman in need. The fact that they were from competing businesses in tough economic times did not matter – as “shoepeople” they formed a community, and banded together to come to the aid of one of their own. A lot has changed since those early days when this humble act of generosity would evolve into Two Ten as we know it today, but our world of uncertainty has not. When the unexpected happens to a member of the footwear community – whether a fire, flood or other natural disaster, serious illness, financial crisis, or other emergency, Two Ten is there to help those in need, thanks to caring shoepeople like those of you here tonight. “Passing the hat” is not only the origin of the Two Ten Footwear Foundation; more than three-quarters of a century later, it’s still at the core of our mission today. When someone in our industry – one of our own – suffers a devastating loss or hardship, we continue to come together to give. It’s that spirit that we celebrate tonight, and I’m proud to be part of an industry that values the importance of this kind of fellowship – a footwear community dedicated to helping our colleagues throughout the country, wherever and whenever help is needed. Neal Newman President’s Message
“All for one, and one for all.” The well-known, iconic call for camaraderie and unity made famous in Alexandre Dumas’s novel, The Three Musketeers. The Army Rangers have a similar creed – “leave no man behind.” And so does your footwear community – “shoepeople help shoepeople.” Our 76th Annual Gala, Pass The Hat, celebrates our remarkable legacy of helping tens of thousands of our footwear colleagues. It all started with a hat. And kind hearts. Our story deserves to be repeated over and over again. A group of Boston shoepeople rallied to help one of their own at the end of the Great Depression. Everyone at the usual Wednesday afternoon “Leather Day” at 210 Lincoln Street threw some money in a hat to help pay an urgent medical bill for one of their friends. The weekly gathering continued and grew into Two Ten Footwear Foundation. Now, 76 years later, our 2015 Gala Chairman, Jim Issler, has got it exactly right – we are a community. Footwear is a fellowship. It’s quite special. It’s very strong – and you are part of it. Think about it – we belong to the only industry in the USA that takes care of our own. No company boundaries. No politics. Just human decency. Dignity. Kindness. All for one, and one for all. In good times and bad. Thank you for making Two Ten, and our footwear village, what it is today. Something to be very proud of – and to celebrate tonight.

This is a special industry, an incredible organization and an exciting celebration in New York City. For 76 years the people of our industry have been coming together to “pass the hat” to support other shoepeople who are less fortunate. The Two Ten Footwear Foundation is unique – we all belong to a community that aligns to take care of our own. Your presence here tonight is a testament to this generosity. Your support and the great work of Two Ten often provide the last safety net for footwear people that are experiencing a life crisis. These are our friends, fellow co workers and associates in the industry. This year we are celebrating and “passing the hat” in a new format. The first evening, we are honoring tradition, as well as three industry leaders. The second night we are in a much larger venue, the historic Hammerstein Ballroom, with great entertainment (Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons) and will be welcoming a much larger audience of next generation industry leaders to Two Ten. A big thank you to Jim Issler and the team at H.H. Brown for their time, talent and energy to plan and lead our 76th year celebration. As part of our long-standing tradition of recognizing extraordinary leadership, philanthropic spirit and commitment to the Foundation, tonight we will recognize and present Kevin Donahue with the inaugural Two Ten Social Impact Award; Debbie Ferrée will receive the prestigious A.A. Bloom Memorial Award; and we will honor the late Vince Camuto and his lifetime of philanthropy with the T. Kenyon Holly Memorial Award. On behalf of our Two Ten’s Board of Directors and management team, I would like to personally thank you for your enthusiastic support of the Foundation. Social Impact Award The Two Ten Social Impact Award is an “occasional” award that recognizes an individual or company who makes giving back to the community a priority. The honoree has taken extraordinary steps to deepen Two Ten Footwear Foundation’s social impact and expand our historic and compassionate “pass the hat” spirit of the footwear community, in order to positively change 2015 – Kevin Donahue

the lives of footwear employees and their families who need a helping hand. This is a new award for 2015 that gives Two Ten an opportunity to recognize individuals, and companies, who display a deep affinity with Two Ten’s legacy and champion fresh thinking and philanthropic leadership today and into the future.

2015 Social Impact Award Honoree
In recognition of Kevin Donahue’s strides to give back to the community and to deepen Two Ten’s social impact and “pass the hat” spirit, Kevin will be the first recipient of the Social Impact Award. Kevin Donahue, Quabaug Corporation, became a lifetime member of Two Ten in 1983, and joined the Two Ten Board in 1995, serving as an active member of the Endowment Committee, Finance Committee, and Membership Committees. In addition, he served as Chair of the Scholarship Committee from 2001 to 2011. Kevin continues to remain involved, helping to raise over $360K for Two Ten’s Footwear Warriors Scholarship, a scholarship fund developed exclusively for military Veterans working within the footwear industry.
As retired Chairman and CEO of Quabaug Corporation, Kevin has a history supporting U.S. troops through his work. He continues to work on Vibram’s Advisory Board as a global partner and serves as Vibram’s Chief Coaching Officer. Quabaug is proud to be the largest U.S. supplier of Vibram outsoles to the U.S military. Kevin will be honored with the Social Impact Award for his deep affinity to Two Ten’s legacy and philanthropic leadership today, and into the future. He and his wife Carol also have endowed scholarships at Middlebury College and Saint Raphael Academy in Pawtucket, RI.
Social Impact Award Presenters General (Retired) David H. Petraeus, KKR Global Institute General David H. Petraeus served over 37 years in the U.S. military, including tours in Cold War Europe, the United States, Central America, Haiti, Bosnia, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the greater Middle East. He culminated his military service with six consecutive commands as a general officer, five of which were in combat. Following his service in the military, General Petraeus served as the Director of the CIA. Lee Van Arsdale In the course of his 25 year Army career, Colonel (retired) Lee A. Van Arsdale’s assignments were primarily in Special Forces, with 11 of those years spent in the First Special Forces Operation Detachment-Delta (Airborne). He served in three combat zones in leadership positions, and was decorated for valor with the prestigious Silver Star and with the Purple Heart honors (amongst many other awards) for wounds received in combat. Debbie Ferrée 2015 A.A. Bloom Memorial Award Honoree
Debbie Ferrée, Vice Chairman and Chief Merchandising Officer of DSW, Inc. and Two Ten Board member since 2010, is an innovative and activist chair of the Two Ten Scholarship Committee. Debbie joined DSW, Inc. in 1997, serving as President from November 2004 to January 2006. Under Debbie’s leadership, Two Ten’s Scholarship committee has extended the impact of program offerings, through an increased scholarship fund in support of the financial needs of footwear families.
Debbie also serves on Two Ten’s Women in Footwear Industry (WIFI) Mentoring Committee. The goal of the WIFI Mentoring Program is to inspire women with varying levels of experience in the footwear industry by pairing them with seasoned professionals. Debbie has been a lifetime member of Two Ten since 1992.
A.A. Bloom Memorial Award Presenter Jay Schottenstein, DSW, Inc. Jay Schottenstein is the Chairman of DSW, Inc., the Chairman, President and CEO of Schottenstein Stores Corporation (SSC), the Chairman of Schottenstein Realty LLC, and the Chairman of SB Capital Group LLC. Jay and his wife, Jeanie, and their sons Joseph (Lindsay), Jonathan, and Jeffrey, along with other family members, are major benefactors to a number of national and international special projects. 2015 T. Kenyon Holly Memorial Award Honoree
As an avid believer in the importance of philanthropy, Vince Camuto focused his charitable endeavors on organizations that advocated for women and children, including St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Domestic Abuse Awareness Foundation. His passion for philanthropy led him to serve on the board of Wish and a Smile Inc., an organization dedicated to raising funds for seriously ill children. In 2013, Vince was awarded the prestigious Footwear News Lifetime Achievement Award and had served as a lifetime member and individual donor to Two Ten. In addition to his legacy of philanthropy, Vince was well known for his contributions to the footwear industry. In 1978, Vince co-founded Nine West, providing vision and identity to the brand prior to the company going public in 1993. He founded Camuto Group in 2001, which would expand to the cre-
ation and launch of lines across footwear, clothing, and accessories. Today the brands comprise over 35 categories, including footwear, sportswear, dresses, handbags, jewelry, swimwear, and fragrance. Vince’s legacy will be honored through the presentation of the T. Kenyon Holly Memorial Award, Two Ten’s highest honor for outstanding humanitarian achievement of an individual within the footwear, leather, or allied industries. Like her husband, Louise Camuto is also an avid philanthropist for charities that benefit women, children, and families. Louise supports the Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and “FFaNY Shoes on Sale” breast cancer research. She continues to demonstrate her support for the footwear community as a Board member of Two Ten Footwear Foundation.
T. Kenyon Holly Memorial Award Presenter Alexandra Dillard Lucie, Dillard’s Alexandra Dillard Lucie became the corporate merchandise manager for Dillard’s in 2008. Building on a family business started by her grandfather, she has brought fresh new ideas to the department store chain and distinguished herself as an outstanding manager. Ellison Society The Ellison Society is named for the late Bill Ellison, a long-time Two Ten trustee who became the Foundation’s most generous benefactor through a very substantial gift in his will. The Society carries on Bill’s strongly-held belief in the importance of estate planning, to ensure Two Ten’s ability to meet its charitable obligations for

Entering its fourth year, Footwear Cares® is Two Ten’s fasting growing national community building program. Designed to bring an entire industry together around a common goal, Footwear Cares provides a plethora of volunteer opportunities for shoepeople to help others get back on their feet. 2015 Footwear Cares® Month Highlights • 540,000 meals were made available to vulnerable populations. • 12,570 pairs of new shoes and outfits were distributed to children. • Over 25 environmental projects were completed to enhance our coastlines, nature trails, community parks and recreation facilities. • 3,256 low-income children were provided with clothing and essentials. • 1,303 volunteer hours contributed to conservation, restoration and home building projects. Why is giving back important? Participating in Footwear Cares provides an opportunity for shoepeople to come together in a way that forever changes lives; their own and the lives of those they’ve helped.
