Jai Shri Krishna
Shri Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Janmashtami, Gokulashtami, or Sree Jayanti, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. It is celebrated eight days after Raksha Bandhan. In 2025, Janmashtami will be celebrated on August 16th. The festival is a time for devotion, with devotees fasting, singing bhajans and kirtans, and participating in rituals to commemorate the birth of LordKrishna.

Rituals Performed During Krishna Janmashtami

1.On occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, devotees fast all day. The entire day is dedicated to remembering the Lord, and the fast concludes at midnight, which is thought to be the time of Lord Krishna's birth.
2.All day long, devotees chant the Lord's name, filling the air with their devotion and dedication. A lot of devotional songs are sung, particularly at Krishna temples.
3.Elaborate skits retelling Krishna's life story and his different leelas are performed. Children dressed as Krishna and his Gopis perform Raas Leela.
4.Because Makhan was so dear to Lord Krishna, it is an essential delicacy. To appease little Gopal, devotees offer sweets made with milk, dry fruits, sugar, and khoya.
5.To help us remember Krishna's teachings and the meaning of life, passages from the Bhagavad Gita are recited aloud.

The Birth of Lord Krishna A Story
A long time ago, in the kingdom of Mathura, there lived a cruel king named Kansa. He was very mean and scared everyone.
One day, a voice from the sky said: “Kansa, your evil ways will end! The eighth child of your sister Devaki will destroy you!” This made Kansa angry and afraid! He locked Devaki and her husband Vasudeva in prison.

Every time Devaki had a baby, Kansa took the baby away. He did this seven times!
Then, Devaki had her eighth baby. On a stormy night, when everyone was asleep, a miracle happened! ✨
A beautiful baby boy was born! He was Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Suddenly, the prison doors opened, and the guards fell asleep. A voice told Vasudeva:
“Take
baby Krishna across the Yamuna River to Gokul. Leave him with Nanda and Yashoda.”

So, Vasudeva carried baby Krishna in a basket on his head. As he crossed the river, the water made way for him, and a snake called Sheshnaag covered Krishna from the rain. ☔
He safely reached Gokul, where baby Krishna was loved and cared for by Yashoda Ma.

Back in Mathura, everyone thought the baby was gone. Krishna grew up in Gokul doing fun things— stealing butter, playing the flute, and dancing with his friends.

But one day, he would return to Mathura to defeat Kansa and bring peace.

Lord Krishna defeats Kansa
When Krishna grew older, he went back to Mathura with his brother Balarama. Kansa had become even more wicked!
Bravely, Krishna entered the palace and fought Kansa in front of everyone. After a fierce battle, Krishna defeated the evil king and freed his parents and the people of Mathura. ✨ Everyone cheered, and peace returned to the kingdom. Krishna became a hero!
Moral of the story: Good always wins over evil. Lord Krishna’s life teaches us to be brave, kind, and full of joy!
Happy Krishna Janmashtami!
Janmashtami Offerings (Bhog)
1. Makhan (Butter)
Krishna’s favorite! He was known as Makhan Chor (butter thief). Fresh homemade white butter is often offered.
2. Mishri (Rock Sugar)
Sweet and crunchy – usually offered with butter as a symbol of Krishna’s sweet nature.
3. Kheer (Sweet Rice Pudding)
A delicious milk-based dish with rice, sugar, and dry fruits. It's often offered as a main prasad.
4. Fruits
Especially bananas, grapes, and apples – offered fresh and neatly cut.
5. Laddoos
Like besan laddoo, boondi laddoo, or panjiri laddoo – simple sweets kids can also enjoy.
6. Chappan Bhog
On some occasions, 56 different items (Chappan Bhog) are made symbolizing abundance and devotion. This includes savories, sweets, drinks, and fruits.
7. Sweet Milk or Flavored Lassi
To represent Krishna’s love for dairy — offered in a small clay pot or glass.
8. Tulsi Leaves
Every offering is topped with a tulsi (holy basil) leaf, as it is very dear to Krishna.
After offering the bhog at the altar or a small Krishna idol, it is distributed as prasad to everyone — a loving blessing from the Lord.
