Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav, is celebrated across the world with much joy and reverence. Devotees honor Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvati. In 2025, the celebration will take place over ten days, starting on August 26 and ending on September 06.
Devotees bring Lord Ganesha idols (idols are traditionally made of clay) to their homes, offer prayers and sweets, to invoke the Lord and seek his blessings. For the next 10 days the idol is worshipped every day and an arti is sung in the evening. It is believed that Lord Ganesh was born at midday, and consequently it is considered to be the most auspicious time of the day for performing the rituals.
Vrat Sankalp: Devotees make a solemn vow (sankalp) to observe the vrat with sincerity, purity of heart and mind and dedication to Lord Ganesha. Morning Rituals: Begin the day with bathing, cleansing rituals, and offering prayers to Lord Ganesha, setting a positive and auspicious start to the fasting day.
The festival concludes when the idol is carried in a public procession and immersed (visarjan) in a river or sea on the day of Anant Chaturdashi.
The fast is supposed to be strict and only fruit, roots (the part of a plant which is below ground) and vegetable products are supposed to be consumed. Devotees break the fast at night after sighting of the moon.
