Regional Development Australia (RDA) has highlighted to Adelaide Plains Council a range of economic opportunities for the Adelaide Plains region following a recent presentation.

Anne Moroney, Rolf Binder and Tony Clark of the Barossa, Gawler, Light and Adelaide Plains RDA, formerly known as Barossa RDA, was invited to speak at the Adelaide Plains Council December meeting by CEO, James Miller.

Ms Moroney spoke at length about the economic opportunities being investigated and capitalised on in the developing region with Mr Miller stating during his introduction, “we’ve had the Barossa RDA right by our side over the last couple of years”.

Ms Moroney revealed at the last special meeting of the RDA it was resolved to formally change the name to reflect more of where the organisation operates.

Her detailed presentation outlined the economic sectors in the region and what was currently being achieved.

With the arrival of NAIS (Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme) the agricultural sector will receive a huge injection of opportunity and expertise, resulting in employment

growth, especially in connected lifestyle regions, those that are close to major cities like the Adelaide Plains.

“Education and training is seen as a big growth sector in the economy here and that’s one of those we’re working on for the long term,” Ms Moroney explained.

“There are some amazing tourism assets in this region, hopefully in the new life of the motorsport park and the shore bird sanctuary.”

Councillors questioned how to welcome Chinese investment, and were told building a relationship was necessary in order to build confidence.

Prominent Barossa winemaker, Rolph Binder also spoke during the presentation.

“I think the most important thing with China is patience,

and they are a very interesting customer because what they actually want they won’t tell you on the first visit,” Mr Binder said.

“There are different layers and different levels with how you communicate with them.

“Negotiating with them is very interesting.”

Well known businessman in horticulture and food manufacturing, Tony Clark, said the almond industry would find the growing conditions perfect in this region, particularly Kangaroo Flat, which is perfect for trees.

“The secret is to encourage people who are not currently in this area looking for the resources that we’ve got,” he said.

“Look for people who are looking at you.”

Floodplain build levels mean after 14 months of application revisions...

Council couldn’t give a shed Andy and Stacey Gameau were looking forward to living in their new home in Two Wells, however reality quickly turned sour after moving, a result of miscommunication and council regulations.

The couple believe they were given incorrect information regarding their ability to erect a shed when they purchased the block of land in Hickinbotham’s new Eden estate.

They were attracted to the semirural block of land so they could have a large shed for storage however, 14 months after lodging their first development application, they are yet to gain council approval and have been left feeling confused and upset.

In a formal letter written to council seeking assistance with their matter, the couple allege they were informed by the Hickinbotham sales representative that they would be able to build a large shed on the flat paddock as the land was semi-rural.

Unfortunately for the Gameaus, the Eden development sits in the floodplain and as such, is subject to a strict floodplain build height policy.

Speaking on behalf of the Gameaus at January’s council meeting, Cr Eddie Stubing said he believed the issue needed to be addressed collectively, by both Eden and council.

“It’s not right, the salesperson has (allegedly) told them that they could put a shed there and that was wrong,” Cr Stubing said.

“I went to his place and the garage is full of stuff, he’s a plumber, he can’t put his cars in there because he hasn’t got a space for any of his belongings.”

Because the Eden development has been built in the floodplain, the building pads on one half of the development have been elevated so homes are seemingly built on a makeshift island.

The couple are willing to have their shed structurally engineered to withstand a 1 in 100-year flood.

Council suggested they seek a hydrological report for a proposed shed on the flat paddock, as due to the size of the shed, it would not fit on the building pad.

“Hickinbotham suggested for us not to contact the council and that they will liaise with the hydrological engineers and council to get the sheds approval resolved,” the letter states.

“They have always stated that our sheds will get approved, yet we have seen little to no progress.”

Another couple in the Eden development, Alex Lange and Sophie Kiosses face the same issue.

Alex and Sophie submitted their first development application to council to build a shed in March last year.

They were told to obtain a hydrological report and resubmit, however, council’s senior planning officer once again rejected the application citing a hazard zone three flood area.

At the council meeting, Cr Marcus Strudwicke weighed into the debate.

“This is just an issue between Hickinbothams, the land owner and our planning department,” he said.

“There are planning constraints and obviously there’s been some communication breakdown.”

Cr Karen McColl believed the problem to be an inherent one that has been encountered over the years, and was not restricted to just sheds but planning in general.

“The basis in fixing it is in education,” she said.

“And not only education of the community, but education of the real estate, the people who are actually selling and marketing these pieces of land.”

Cr Stubing again expressed his sentiments on the issue.

“There’s blocks dotted in there that no one is going to buy because everyone knows about the shed issue, and it’s something we’ve got to address collectively whether the council can work with Hickinbothams to get some resolution with this,” he said.

Talk of the Lutheran school within the new Hickinbotham development and whether it is going ahead or not was also raised.

“Three-hundred-and-sixty people who have thrown their hat in the ring, and they’ve talked about building in 2018 and taking students in 2019, now it’s out there that the school is not going to progress,” Cr Stubing said.

“We’ve got a combination of this lemon of a driveway at Eden which denigrates the whole thing, and it’s not been addressed, it’s gone on for 14 months.

“I’d rather raise it as a community, we talk about transparency, there’s no sense hiding behind

“The problem is, these buildings hinge on our future.”

Speaking after the meeting, APC’s general manager of development and community, Robert Veitch explained council’s involvement in the matter.

“Council staff are continuing to work towards a suitable outcome for both applicants and council,” Mr Veitch said.

“It is hoped that satisfactory solutions will occur in the near future in both cases and this may be dependent on additional supporting informa-

tion that the applicants provide and how the ongoing negotiations progress.

“While the individual applicants have lodged the applications, Hickinbotham have been part of the negotiations to date as well.”

HIckinbotham was contacted regarding the ‘shed issue’, and a spokesperson responded.

“Sheds at Hickinbotham Group’s Eden development at Two Wells are able to be constructed on allotments provided they meet Adelaide Plains Council’s normal approval requirements,” the spokesperson stated.

In response to rumours circulating that the school was not going ahead, the spokesperson stated, “The company understands the proposed Lutheran College is in the final stages of an internal approval process, and a commencement date and offering will be communicated when this process is complete.”

“The Hickinbotham Group has developed a close working relationship with Adelaide Plains Council and Lutheran Education in the development of Eden, and looks forward to continuing to do so to ensure the project reaches its full potential.”

Food festival fun for Northern Plains

Coordinated by the Northern Plains Compass (NPC) community group, the event is gaining great traction with popular television presenter, Cosi, from South Aussie with Cosi, confirmed to be hosting the event and celebrity chef Callum Hann, of Master Chef fame, on-board to offer cooking demonstrations.

There’s even a pumpkin growing competition with local schools invited to get involved by growing the biggest pumpkin it can before the festival on March 25.

NPC member, John Lush, says the day is a fantastic opportunity for the region to shine.

“This event aims to raise awareness of how good the produce on the Adelaide Plains really is,” Mr Lush said.

“It’s so much better and the origins of the food in this area is

probably the best in the world.

“The intention is to set up a fruit and vegetable produce market in Two Wells with the idea to have local produce readily available.”

Other features of the festival include: Cover band, ‘The Rumour’ will play some great sets adding a great vibe to the event!

Adelaide Produce Markets will bring along their larger than life broccoli and corn characters to give out over 1000 pieces of free fruit to

children!

There will be sideshows and nature activities for children offered by the NRM team.

For the adults there are a range of wines and treats too!

Organisers are encouraging everyone to come along and enjoy the day anytime from 10am-4pm, but note the band will be on from 1pm and the cooking demonstrations will be at 11am and 2pm.

Smashed avocado and business on toast

The establishment of a business council for the Adelaide Plains is still gaining momentum despite Adelaide Plains Council members voting to defer the motion at the January council meeting, the premise being to firstly enable networking opportunities within the region an opportunity to provide the eventual framework of the Business Council.

Speaking at APC’s December council meeting, Barossa, Gawler, Light and Adelaide Plains RDA’s (Regional Development Australia) CEO, Anne Moroney suggested the hosting of business breakfasts.

Natalie Centenera reports: “Start with the collaboration rather than the structure and build it into what people want it to be,” she said.

“Get some really good guest speakers to come and speak at the business breakfasts and bring people together for some common conversations, find the interest and build from that perspective.”

Ms Moroney suggested breakfast because it is a time when people seem to come together for leadership and

networking purposes.

APC has taken heed of Ms Moroney’s advice and believes this approach will allow for the organic growth of connecting business leaders with business leaders, forging networks and emerging opportunities.

The business breakfasts will be jointly facilitated by council and the RDA. Cr Marcus Strudwicke voiced his support for deferring the motion of establishing the official business council until the networking breakfasts have been held.

“Hopefully the establishment of the business council

will gain momentum by having these breakfasts,” he said.

The initial concept of a business council for the Adelaide Plains was raised by Adelaide Plains Ratepayers Association (APRA) chairperson, John Lush, at council’s August meeting.

Speaking during the open forum session of that meeting, he explained he would like to see a discussion of strategies to improve opportunities to grow existing businesses and to attract new ones to the area, thereby creating employment and brining new money to the region.

by Playford Council’s inability to pressure developers BMD to find an alternative option to site works on a new housing development that required the closure of a section of Heaslip Road for six days earlier this month.

Cindy Ware and partner Barry Filosi own a garden centre along Heaslip Road and held major concerns for their business throughout the period of the road closure from Wednesday, January 3 to January 9.

“We lost a large number of customers the last time

“This time ‘round, we lost a bit of money,” Mr Filosi added.

“Customers didn’t bother trying to reach us, they just gave us a miss.

“The road was closed for six days, but they had the work done in four.”

Market gardener, Danny De Ieso, whose business is around the corner on Gawler River Road, said his employ-

ees and freight trucks had to take an extremely long detour.

Mr De Ieso also raised the issue of emergency services being hindered in their attempts to reach incidents in a timely manner.

“I’m in favour of the progress and development, but at the same time you’ve got existing jobs and businesses to protect, I want to know why has the council put the profits of a developer ahead of the entire community,” he said.

Residents and business owners were unhappy about the short notice given and inconsistent information regarding closure dates.

Accessibility and the detour route were seen as detrimental to the local community, with residents in both Lewiston and Angle Vale affected.

Angle Vale Seed and Fodder owner, Darren Scaife, said businesses and residents have endured nothing but roadworks in recent times and called the two road closures within 12 months of each other, a diabolical mess.

“I don’t know how they got away with it,” he said, referring to the private company developing the housing estate.

“We suffered a decline in business, but the worst of it

was the time consumed when making deliveries.

“We had to add 15 to 20 minutes to each delivery, so the number made each day dropped.

“Residents in the Two Wells and Lewiston areas weren’t happy as they had to use the freeway or Baker’s Road to get into Angle Vale.

“It was a nightmare, and the road still has not been bituminised.”

Playford Council’s Media Advisor, Vassil Malandris, explained to the Echo that even though it was council that ultimately gave approval to BMD for the road

closure, they were advised the situation was unavoidable by both SA Water and the developer.

Council did negotiate, however, for a reduction in the timeframe of 11 days closure, to six days.

The works saw a fivemetre deep trench and a live tapping of water mains requiring extensive ‘boxing’ works.

BMD issued a letter to residents within the area apologising for the confusion regarding the conflicting dates provided and inconvenience caused, however stated that on this occasion, the situation was unavoidable.

Korunye rail crossing closed for improvements

The Korunye rail crossing will be closed until late March as works are carried out as part of the Upper Yorke Peninsula Regional Road Network Upgrade Program.

The rail crossing at Mallala,

Paddy’s Bridge, Gordon and Verner Roads near Korunye will be upgraded by realigning the roads in the approach to the crossing to reduce the sharpness of bends.

To facilitate these works, the

junction of Mallala and Gordon’s Roads was closed from a few weeks ago and is expected to re-open in late March 2018.

Access to and from Mallala Road will be maintained via a detour utilis-

ing Pratt Road.

Dalkeith Road Upgrade gets green light from Parliament’s Public works Committee so work is ready to start soon. Local MP Tony Piccolo congratulating Dalkeith CFS Captain “Mutchie” Mutch for their hard work it getting the upgrade on the agenda.

Major road projects approved Infrastructure works worth hundreds of millions of dollars directly benefitting the people in the Light electorate will commence early this year after a parliamentary committee granted final approvals prior to Christmas.

Local Member of Parliament, Tony Piccolo, said many of these projects were shovel ready but required consideration by the Parliamentary Works Committee before construction could commence.

Projects that are of direct interest to the area include: The installation of traffic lights at the intersection

of Dalkeith and Main North Roads; Gawler East Link Road; Stage 1 of the Electrification of the Gawler Rail line; and the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme.

According to the committee’s report, the Dalkeith Road intersection upgrade is expected to cost up to $7.9 million.

Mr Piccolo said the improvements will include traffic lights to fully control all through and right hand movements both into and out of Main North Road, along with the construction of left hand turn slip lanes.

School STEM works continue Works on Two Wells Primary School’s $1 million STEM project is progressing, with the building on track for its opening in May. TWPS principal Linda Fitzpatrick-Brown said the renovations were well underway and the old hall building was being given a new lease of life.

“Forty-eight crashes were reported at this intersection between 2012 and 2016, including 27 casualty crashes and 21 resulting in property damage,” Mr Piccolo said.

“The predominant casualty crash type is ‘right angle’ followed by rear enders and right turn.

“I have been working with the Dalkeith Country Fire Service since January 2015 in calling for the intersection to be upgraded.

“I would like to thank the leaders and members of the local CFS who have worked tirelessly to get this intersection

upgraded.”

The Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme was approved by the committee and is expected to deliver 12 gigalitres of recycled water to Virginia/Two Wells and Northern Adelaide Plains horticulture areas.

The new 27-kilometre pipeline, which is jointly funded by the State and Commonwealth Governments will help generate over 3,700 jobs in the horticultural industry by increasing the productive capacity of the land in the area.

Mr Piccolo said the NAIS is one of the most exciting projects for the region.

This will ensure that local councils will always hold citizenship ceremonies on January 26th, welcoming our newest citizens into the community on the day we celebrate all there is about Australia.

This Australia day I was lucky enough to attend celebrations in Gawler and Salisbury, which included the citizenship ceremonies for these two councils.

There has been much debate over the date of Australia Day, and the effect it has on certain parts of our community. The fact remains that on the 26th of January 1949, the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 came into effect, formally recognising all British Subjects in Australia as Australians. This included those of European origin, and our First Australians. As such, January 26th historically has symbolized a day of unity and respect. A day for all Australians to come together and share in the celebration of Australia, and the values it represents.

Each Australia Day can be used to gauge how far we have come as Australians in not only the past year, but also the last 69 years since that legislation was passed.

Lewiston barrel racer Dakota Michaelis has been crowned 2018 Miss Rodeo Australia after an intense two days of judging in Queensland over the weekend.

It’s been more than 20 years since anyone from South Australia has claimed the title, with Dakota taking the honours from a field of five other hopefuls.

The 20-year-old competes throughout the year at rodeo events across the country and this year is aiming to take out the South Australian Rookie Barrel Racing Champion title.

As well as promoting the sport of barrel racing and the wider rodeo life in general, Dakota raised more than $6000 for the Prospect-based Epilepsy Centre.

“I like that I’m helping to raise awareness of epilepsy as well as promote the sport I have lived and breathed since I was five years old,” she said.

Dakota’s first rodeo experience was at the Peterborough rodeo when she was five, coincidently the same rodeo 15 years down the track at which she took out the title of Miss Peterborough.

The Miss Rodeo Australia competition is serious business.

Over two days at Warwick, Queensland contestants were put through a range of challenges.

There was a lengthy face-to-face interview in front of a panel of judges, meet-and-greet public appearances as well as a tough horse riding assessment.

There was also a written industrybased test.

On being named the 2018 Miss

Bec O’Brien reports: Rodeo Australia winner, Dakota said she was almost speechless.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” she said “I was lost for words really and thought ‘is this for real?’”

Dakota took home $15,000 in prizes, including an overseas trip to watch the world’s best rodeoers at the Las Vegas world rodeo finals later this year.

“This will give me the opportunity to further my career internationally,” Dakota said.

“I’ll get to meet so many people, it will be the trip of a lifetime.

“I’m so excited and I can’t wait to see how they rodeo over there.”

It’s going to be a very busy year for Dakota, who works fulltime, gives riding lessons and competes most weekends at rodeos across the country.

Winning the title also means she’ll appear at rodeos in numerous states and make a variety of public appearances to further the sport.

“It’s definitely going to be a flat out and challenging year,” she said.

“But I’m really excited.

“I’m hoping to raise the profile of the sport and get people more educated about the industry.

“I’d encourage people to come to a rodeo and take a look behind the scenes, see how we care for our animals and the love, sweat and tears we pour into doing what we love.”

teamed up for the first time to present an animal-themed exhibition at poetic Justice Cafe Gallery in Gawler.

Lewiston resident, Kathy Baldock, and Two Wells girl, Alison Gray, will feature a range of their works from the past three years, with a focus on horses.

Kathy is an artist in her mid-forties, and has been doing pet portraits professionally for many years.

Kathy’s Pet Portraits facebook page has over 2000 members.

As a child Kathy always loved drawing, and horses, and it was no surprise to those who knew her that the only subject she would focus on was horses!

Her mum still has paintings done at kindy (40-ish years ago).

These days Kathy paints a variety of subjects and has taken on many commissions for pets and also humans.

Kathy paints while her three young children are at school and her husband is at work.

Commissions are the majority of her work but to keep herself motivated and “fresh”, Kathy loves to try new mediums and styles.

Kathy’s main love is oils but she also works in pastels, watercolour, graphite, charcoal and Gouache.

APEC hunts for home on horizon

Natalie Centenera reports: Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club (APEC) is seeking to lease a portion of Clara Harniman Reserve in Lewiston as they search for a permanent home for their growing membership base.

The group have been working with Adelaide Plains Council for a number of years and at council’s December meeting, elected members voted to authorise council staff to undertake public consultation, which would see APEC lease 1.7 hectares of the southern portion of the reserve.

APEC was formed six years ago as a non-competitive riding club and although they have already been utilising the land for equestrian activities they are seeking to lease the land on a long-term basis, enabling the club to hold regular events without the requirement of obtaining annual permits.

As the reserve is community land, public consultation is required in order for any objections of the proposal to be taken into consideration.

APEC are hoping to develop the site for future community use, to benefit not only the equestrian club but also other community groups.

APEC president, Samantha Dragon, said the club’s goal has always been to develop the site for community use, not just for the equestrian club.

“We have been trying to get this off the ground for six years,” Mrs Dragon said.

APC’s general manager of development and community, Robert Veitch, spoke to the chamber at council’s December meeting.

“There is enough adequate land to buffer also other potential relocations to the northern portion of this site,” Mr Veitch said.

Camping site management up for grabs The responsibility of managing the Mallala and Parham camping sites is up for grabs as Adelaide Plains Council has called for expressions of interest from the public to develop, manage and maintain the sites in a bid to alleviate council from the financial burden of running both grounds.

APC was in negotiations with the Mallala Lions Club to manage the ablutions block, built by the Lions Club in 2013, and the surrounding camping ground, however failed to agree on just one of numerous conditions in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Elected members discussed the controversial topic at January’s council meeting, APC’s general manager of finance and economic development, Rajith Udugampola, explained council was not prepared to foot the bill for the annual cost of the CWMS at the Mallala camping site, which is $586 per annum.

“We agreed on 31 terms of conditions with the Lions Club that was presented to the council, the only thing that wasn’t agreed upon was the CWMS,” Mr Udugampola said.

Mr Udagampola revealed council had been approached by another community group, The Men’s Shed, that had expressed an interest in managing the ground, leading him to recommend a public open expression of interest instead of negotiating with a single group, in the interests of transparency and obtaining ‘the best outcome for the ratepayers.’

“We thought we could use the opportunity to do the same thing with the Parham camping site because council is not in the business of running camping sites.”

Council staff are now of the belief they will be in breach of section 49 of the Local Government Act 1999, if they enter into an agreement with

Mallala Lions Club member, Neil Slater, is disappointed with the outcome, reiterating during the meeting’s open forum session, ‘the Lions Club is not pursuing this project to make money, it is simply trying to encourage more travellers to come to this great area.’

“The general manager’s attitude towards the camping area is they want to at least cover the rate payers’ costs, understandably, they forget part of the council’s own obligation is to promote tourism.

“There are 68 camping sites within approximately 200km of Mallala and 33 of those are owned by council and have no fees charged whatsoever.

“Those councils are doing their civic duty promoting tourism.”

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Slater said obtaining a lease for the camping grounds would mean, ‘we have a piece of dirt in our name to get grants and do things council can’t, we just need a bit of help.’

Mr Slater retained council took possession of the ablution block, and responsibility for the infrastructure and utilities, three months after it was built by the Lions Club that had prepared itself to manage the costs and responsibility of the facility.

“The original MOU between Lions and council was written by council and signed in 2013, now it is saying it is not a legal document.”

“There have been too many changes to the rules,” he said, “and it (council) is blaming us.”

over another community group managing the site, believing Lions has the necessary experience and manpower in comparison with the Men’s Shed.

Cr Strudwicke supported the motion to seek expressions of interest from the public.

“We need an open and fair process, this is a valuable piece of

land, it has commercial value, and so appropriately council should have a lease over that land,” he said.

“Council has the responsibility to get the best deal for its ratepayers, this process will provide that pathway if we support this motion.”

Speaking after the meeting, Norm Dicks, of the Men’s Shed, said the community group will examine the terms and conditions of the lease to see if they are favourable, and make a collective decision as to whether the group would be able to meet them.

“We would look to see if we could run the campsite at no expense to the council,” Mr Dicks said.

“Mallala and Parham are free caravan parks with minimal benefits to the ratepayers.

“The value-adding of the campsites doesn’t offset the thousands of dollars APC puts into the grounds at the rate payers expense.”

Port Parham resident, Alvin Jenkin, said he is extremely disappointed with Adelaide Plains Council for, “hitting us out of the blue like this.”

“For a community of 200 people, it will be hard to find volunteers.”

Mr Jenkin said the costs associated with running the campsite, like garbage, water, electricity and cleaning, “is something we, as the ratepayers, are prepared to pay.”

“The operation of the campground at Port Parham was simple and economic in the past. “Recent actions by council have complicated it, increased operating costs, and alienated the community and the travelling public.”

Elected members were clearly divided on the issue with mayor, Tony Flaherty, casting the deciding vote to support the motion and invite expressions of interest from the public to manage the camping grounds.

APC creates economic development role to support senior staff The position of an economic development officer will be created at Adelaide Plains Council following a decision at its January meeting.

The move comes after discussion in the chamber to support the general manager of finance and the CEO on a number of economic-related fronts.

Council is hopeful the candidate will deliver successful results on immediate priorities to facilitate business and investment attraction.

Initially, council sought government funding for the position, although this was not successful.

However, due to a number of staff resignations, in particular council’s finance and strategic projects coordinators, council is able to fund the position of a part-time, economic development officer.

APC’s general manager of finance and economic development, Rajith Udugampola, spoke about the position at APC’s January meeting.

“There have been some staff resignations and we have done some restructuring,” Mr Udugampola said.

“As a result, some additional funds were identified within the existing budget.

“With these funds, a position will be created without any additional cost to the ratepayers, but we still continue to seek additional funding for the position going forwards.”

The role is expected to focus on the facilitation of business breakfasts - a

Elected members expressed an understanding of the importance of the role and stressed the need for a suitably qualified individual to fulfil the position.

“Looking at the role itself, it’s very intensive in terms of knowing the community and applying for grants,” Cr Margherita Panella said.

“We need someone who has very clear communication skills and is very well established.”

Cr Marcus Strudwicke also spoke in support of the position.

“With the idea of a business council, issues of tourism, and with the development going on in Two Wells, it just has to happen,” he said.

“It is a position I have been pushing for 15 years.”

Elected members voted in favour of the motion and applicants for the role of an economic development officer are now being sought, initially among APC’s staff, then wider afield.

If you are putting out your bin this week and happen to see a bright green rubbish truck instead of the usual white one along your street, don’t panic.

Adelaide Plains Council has entered into a contractual arrangement with Solo Resource Recovery to provide kerbside waste collection services across the district.

As of Monday February 5, Solo Resources will take over waste collection services in the Adelaide Plains Council area.

The move comes following an extensive review of council’s waste services last year, which included an online survey.

Residents will not see any changes to the servicing of their bins with collection days and bin sizes remaining the same.

Solo Resources will collect bins every weekday, including public holidays, with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. This is a change from the previous service, and one which APC infrastructure general manager, Martin Waddington, says residents will appreciate.

“We didn’t really want to change the service too much and that’s basically what we’ve delivered,” Mr Waddington said.

“We’ve managed to increase the reliability of the service by going out to tender.

“Our trucks are on their last legs.

“We can’t keep them on the road anymore, there’s already one (Solo Resources) truck on the road now because our truck broke down.

“I think it will improve things because the contractor will be running a new fleet of trucks rather than an old and unreliable service which we’ve been dealing with internally.

“The service is expected to be cheaper so there’s cost savings there which will be able to passed on to the customer.”

Residents will see a different truck emptying bins from this month.

The new trucks will be bright green and branded with both APC and Solo’s logos.

As children around South Australia head back to school they will do so with a significant funding cut to their education.

The independent Parliamentary Budget Office has calculated that schools in South Australia will lose $169 million of funding over 2018 and 2019.

This is a part of the Federal Liberal Government’s $17 billion cut to education over the next 10 years.

This will be equivalent to cutting 3 South Australian teachers from every school.

Labor has committed to restoring every dollar of the $17 billion cut from schools by the Liberals.

What life’s like on the farm...

n What is your name and your occupation?

Dawn Buckbychicken grower n How long have you been in this industry?

I have been in the chicken industry since 1984 and been a grower on a chicken farm since 1995. I was the first female chicken grower in South Australia!

n What studies requirements do you need to fulfil to be able to do this type of work?

To work on a poultry farm itself at entry level, you need to have a love of animals.

You have to work hard and you can’t be afraid to get dirty.

There is a lot to learn but if you’re willing to give it a go there are many skills you can acquire.

You basically have to be a jack of all trades and have some common sense and you quickly learn to become a problem solver.

You operate and conduct maintenance on farm machinery, do landscaping and even plumbing!

To be a manager of a poultry farm you definitely need experience.

You would want eight or 10 years experience as a second in charge before you step into a manager’s role as you have to be

right up to speed with your animal husbandry knowledge. You also need to be computer literate, and have people skills in order to manage staff and contractors.

Anyone can do this job if you’re willing to learn, but you need to be open to the lifestyle and have a commitment to it as there are long hours.

It’s all hands-on experience but there are some tertiary courses available if you are looking at studying poultry farming.

n Describe your usual day, starting from when you get up to when your head hits the pillow.

I’m up at 6.30am and in the sheds by 7.30am- after two coffees!

This is a must have for me.

I picked up playing piano and fit in a little practise before I hit the sheds.

Because my farm is free range, I do a feed and water check and then open the sides of the sheds to allow the chickens out, then walk through all sheds checking the welfare of the birds.

The environment of the sheds needs to be perfect as we work under strict FREPA (Free Range Egg and Poultry Australia) standards for Lilydale.

The sheds have evaporative cooling for when it is hot and the chickens are grown in comfortable conditions and environmen-

tally controlled sheds.

The bedding of the sheds needs to be just right, the floors cannot be wet, it has to be dry and friable (easily crumbled).

I need to complete silo readings twice a week and put that information into the computer.

Because we are a free-range farm and the birds are all let out we have to manicure our free-range areas, so we do a lot of mowing, the grass cannot be over 30cms high.

Free range areas need trees, so I enjoyed planting some fruit trees in the range area, we need to ensure they are watered and provide shade.

The birds go to bed at sundown- so they have to be put in the sheds and kept safe from predators as there are cats and foxes on the plains.

n What do you enjoy about

being a chicken grower?

The lifestyle is great.

I love being outdoors and keeping fit and healthy.

Watching everything grow is wonderful too.

Living on a farm provides opportunities for kids to help out while learning the business.

It is good pocket money for the kids growing up.

All of my children worked in the sheds, and my three grandchildren, it’s a good family busi-

ness, and you can pass down the knowledge.

It’s a great life for me and I have never been discriminated against for being female in a male dominated industry.

n What type of changes have you seen in this industry?

The industry is moving towards more regulation to ensure all growers are meeting high standards.

There is a lot more paperwork, biodiversity protocols and monthly audits.

A big change has seen the consumers driving the need for more free-range chickens.

A big misconception in the chicken industry is that we feed our birds hormones, but this isn’t true.

The chicken industry in Australia has never done this, the government actually banned this back in the 1960’s. n What advice would you give to anyone who is looking at entering this industry?

Apply for work on a farm, attend training sessions and TAFE courses.

If you want to set yourself up for life, get into the chicken industry as it’s a great business and lifestyle for the family.

If you enjoy the country lifestyle it is for you!

Trio strive for a cure

Three teenage friends who have directly been affected by cancer will take part in this year’s Relay For Life.

Two Wells resident, Jonathon Pellizzari, along with Xavier College school friends Ethan White and Kieran Roche, have formed the team “Searching for a Cure”.

The trio, along with their supportive family and friends, will participate in the Gawler Relay For Life 24-hour event in April and are looking for your support.

Cancer has affected all three of the boys in some way.

Ethan lost his sister Melissa to leukaemia at the age of just 22 months.

Kieran lost his father Neil to bowel cancer at the age of 51, when Kieran was just 12 years old.

Jonathon was diagnosed with lymph node cancer at

the age of 13, but had the tumour removed and is three years into his full recovery.

The three boys are now 15 years old and have decided to help “search for a cure”.

The relay requires the boys to walk for 24 hours around the Gawler oval,with at least one person from the team always on the field.

“The constant walking will signify the constant battle that people had and have to go through to fight against cancer,” Jonathon said.

“The night time darkness will signify the loss of loved ones that families and friends, including Ethan and Kieran, have to live with everyday.”

In Australia, 300 people are diagnosed with cancer every day.

One in two Australians

will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85.

All funds raised by the event will go to the Cancer Council, which offers a range of services to help people living with cancer in South Australia.

“We, along with thousands of others, need your help,” Jonathon said.

“Please, donate. Whether it’s buying something from one of our fundraisers, to simply donating online, your donations will be greatly appreciated.

“Every dollar counts.”

The Searching For a Cure team are hoping to raise $1000 and will be holding a movie night at the Gawler Cinema on Monday February 26 at 6.45pm.

McManus captivates local crowd

T

he sound of gunfire was exploding in my ears and bullets were literally pounding through bricks in the wall directly above me.

Derrick McManus had just been shot 14 times throughout his body and had crawled to a small haven aside the house STAR group officers had, only minutes earlier, knocked on the front door in a bid to arrest the occupant inside.

McManus lay for three hours, bleeding profusely yet consciously fighting to stay alive, while the gunman, bunkered down in the roof of the house, fired round upon round at anything that moved outside.

This 1994 incident resulted in what is now referred to as South Australia’s longest siege and McManus, now fully recovered, is an inspirational speaker who is sought after both nationally and internationally.

The Two Wells Probus Club invited Mr McManus to speak at their January meeting at the Bowling Club and were delighted with the inundation of more than 40 guests, young and old, who came to hear McManus tell his story.

“I was having a serious look at the possibility of death, and I was scared,” he told the audience.

“But it was right there and then, in that instant, I think I subconsciously realised, that when we face our greatest challenges and changes in our lives, we essentially have two choices.

“Our first choice should be to fight for whatever it is we want most in life at that particular time.”

McManus decided to fight for his life.

And he now urges people to fight for what they believe to be important and relevant in their lives, rather than taking the second choice of just waiting to see what happens, because, he explains, this is where you lose control of what happens in your life.

Natalie Centenera reports: The lighter side of his experience, he divulged, was the sense of humour those around him displayed when it came to giving him a nickname, admitting that most police officers have sick, twisted, and warped ideas about what is funny.

He became known as the sprinkler, due to the amount of holes in his body, and Donald…..because he forgot to duck.

The audience enjoyed a chuckle before being talked through a series of graphic photos of his injuries.

He spoke about knowing the dangers he faced on that day.

“I don’t see myself as a risk taker,” he said, “I see myself as a risk manager, I don’t disregard risk.”

“I will make a clear assessment of my skills, my support, my equipment, everything around me that gives me the ability to believe that I will have an outcome by design and success, rather than just taking a chance and seeing how things work out.”

The shooter, Tony Grosser, had a warrant for 197 counts of fraud, had made threats to the police before and was considered a high-risk arrest.

Five STAR group officers were sent to arrest him, and all were wearing flak vests, better known as bullet proof vests, “can I just be very clear,” McManus said, “they ain’t bullet proof.”

“They stop a certain type of bullet, but they don’t stop all bullets,” he said.

“He (the shooter) was using a 7.62 SKK Chinese military assault rifle.

“He fired 18 times in less than five seconds and hit me 14 times.”

He doesn’t shy away from the fact that he went into immediate panic.

“But I had to accept the present as the present is and it went straight

There were four things McManus knew he needed to do; control panic, control shock, slow down his heart rate and slow down his breathing.

“The one thing that I wanted more than anything else in the world, the one thing that I was prepared to fight for, was I wanted to get back to my children and interact with my children, they gave me the focus and determination to fight, to live,” he said.

It was a constant battle for three hours and when thoughts of death started to overwhelm him, McManus fought the hardest.

His vision had started to disappear, but snapped back to absolutely perfect after realising his colleagues from STAR force were near him, endorphins and adrenaline kicking in.

The doctor who attended to him on the scene, Bill Griggs, “put his life on the line and worked some magic, he is an exceptional medical doctor.”

McManus finally made it to surgery and was given a 50/50 chance of surviving.

He had nine months of learning to use his body again, and returned to work on a part time basis with light duties.

He never lost heart or focus and two and a half years of intensive rehabilitation saw him return to STAR group on full duties with no restrictions.

McManus finalised his presentation with advice from his dad on luck.

“He used to say the harder you try, the more you practise, the luckier you get.”

“And it really is true, we create luck in our life if we choose to do so, but we’ve got to know what we want, we’ve got to be prepared to fight for it and we’ve got to be prepared to get up off our backside and be able to do something about it.”

“If we believe in ourselves, we really can do some amazing things.”

Two Wells Probus member, Jasmine Danielle, thanked Mr McManus for his presentation informing him that only 15 of the audience members were from the Probus club, “the rest have come, just to hear you.”

Mr McManus chatted with eager audience members over lunch, answering questions and offering insight on their own personal experiences shared.

Earl earns APC honours Bec O’Brien reports:

Forty-six-year Country Fire Service volunteer, Phillip Earl, was named the 2018 Adelaide Plains Council Citizen of the Year as the region celebrated Australia Day with a community breakfast at Dublin on Friday, January 26.

While the possibility of extreme heat conditions may have kept many away, a solid crowd gathered to watch as Mr Earl accepted his award and spoke about his many years as a CFS volunteer in the district.

APC deputy mayor, Mel Lawrence, led proceedings while special guest, Australia Day Ambassador and former football great, John Halbert, also spoke.

“Today we celebrate unity in a divided world,” Mr Lawrence said.

“What we value is our democracy, our freedom of opinion and most importantly to celebrate our idea of a fair go.”

Mr Halbert spoke eloquently of the importance of appreciating Australia as the “lucky country”, retelling the journey his great-great-grandparents made as early migrants to Australia, and the trials and tribulations they faced in settling in

the state.

He thanked the award winners for their service to the community.

“Without them, we would take away some of the richness of our community,” he said.

“Today is a day for celebration, a day for reflection and a day for thanks.

“We live in a country where we have a stable government and a multicultural environment (and) even though we acknowledge those benefits, so often we complain about how tough it is.

“We should be grateful for the courage and willingness of our ancestors to step into the unknown and celebrate, not just today, but every day.

“We are truly a lucky country.

“I hope we all celebrate in the spirit we should; one of gratefulness and thankfulness to our ancestors.”

Taking the opportunity to formalise her love for Australia with a citizenship ceremony was Lewiston resident, Claire Hillyer, who after living in Australia for more than 45 years, is now officially an Australian.

Every year on Australia Day, the tide of patriotism for the nation we have become gains momentum, as does the growing realisation that celebrating the First Fleet’s arrival on January 26 may be inappropriate to our indigenous population, who refer to the day as Invasion Day. The area of Angle Vale was identified as a possible site for a new Probus Club by the Membership Development team of Probus South Pacific (PSP).

PSP Director, David Simpson, received information from other local Probus members about the possible new membership area, and then together with Joshua Stojanovic, Membership Development Officer PSP, conducted statistical analysis using census data while looking at the existing clubs in the area to determine if a new club would service the needs

Have your say on AIBS management plan The Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary draft management plan is now out for consultation.

After a three-year consultation period, the draft plan was released last month and was presented to Adelaide Plains Council members at its January 19 meeting.

The draft plan is a twobooklet document which has been developed for the management of the state’s

newest national park.

Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources representative, Arkellah Irving, briefed the chamber on the “Our Park, Our Plan” document.

“I feel hand to heart that this document is a real collaborative document,” Ms Irving said.

“We have engaged with around 20,000 people over the past couple of years.

“This is a plan that is owned by a lot of people.”

Ms Irving stated the plan highlighted the importance of the park’s 27,000 migratory and resident shorebirds, which attract thousands of visitors each year, and aimed to balance the protection of the environment and the animals and birds within its boundaries, and the freedom of access, enjoyment, recreational activities

by people and indigenous heritage.

APC community general manager??, Robert Veitch, said council would be making comment on the plan with regards to tourism, off-road vehicle access and management, and access to local beaches.

Everyone is invited to comment on the draft plan.

An introductory session was held at the Angle Vale Tavern on Wednesday February 7 and was attended by Probus South Pacific Director David Simpson and Rotary District Probus Chair Margaret Robinson.

Membership is open to any member of the community who is retired or semi-retired and is looking for friendship, fellowship and fun.

A new award established by the Two Wells Wells Girls CWA group celebrates the non-academic achievements of local students and aims to promote the spirit of the organisation in the process.

The CWA Award was presented for the first time to two Year 7 students at Two Wells Primary School late last year.

Wells Girls president, Caroline Hardiman, said the award was in recognition of those students who exemplify caring and sharing qualities and demonstrate the ethos of the CWA in general.

“We wanted to highlight someone that showed qualities to the teacher and fellow students that wasn’t of an academic nature,” Caroline explained.

“Things like respect, fairness, kindness, helpfulness, and friendship.

“We want to support young girls in our community and hope this will become an on-going yearly presentation.”

The school has welcomed the ad-

dition of the award, with school counsellor, Zoe Evans saying the recipients, Deana and Despina, were worthy award winners.

“They were chosen by their class teachers because they always tried their best,” Zoe said.

“They were responsible, hard workers with their learning and exhibited a growth mindset in all areas of their school life.

“Both girls were shocked to win the award and what made it even more special was their classmates and friends who all celebrated their award loud and proud.

“The Two Wells CWA do a fantastic job at supporting young women and we will be proud to continue this award each year.”

Both Deana and Despina received the CWA Calendar of Cakes cookbook as well as gift pack.

It was tennis fever all round last month when avid tennis fan and Lower Light resident, Marie Tapscott, spent an evening at the World Tennis Challenge in Adelaide on January 10.

Marie, who was nominated for a Tennis SA volunteer of the year award last year, was treated to drinks and nibbles with some of the world’s tennis stars before the start of play and was thrilled with the whole experience.

Daughter Airlie, pictured above right with American doubles players, and twin brothers, Mike and Bob Bryan, and mum Di Meaney, also enjoyed a night out.

Marie was especially rapt to snap a selfie with Australian tennis great Mark Philippoussis (right) as he left the court following his Legend’s double match with Mansour Bahrami against Mats Wilander and Henri Leconte. Watching young Australian player Thanasi Kokkinakis take on Frenchman Gael Monfils was also a highlight.

While her husband (Justin Brewin) and son (Jayden Brewin) are definitely hotting things up on the harness racing track, Two Wells resident Yvette Brewin, ran her own race recently, taking out the best dressed “mare” at the Fashion on the Fields event at SA Harness Racing’s 2018 SA Cup at Globe Derby Park on January 14.

Yvette is pictured below right with fellow winner Abigail Johnson, who won the best dressed “filly” category.

Both winners took home a not too shabby prize of a dinner for 2 at the Rydes Adelaide and a gift bag. Congratulations ladies.

Striking it Hot this summer Speaking of summer sporting fun, many local residents took the opportunity to take in the Adelaide Strikers New Year’s Eve match against the Brisbane Heat on December 31. While it was definitely hot off the field with temperatures

well into the mid-30s, this didn’t deter young fans Zoe, Jayde and Grace Williams of Two Wells from enjoying the game.

4th February is World Cancer Day, an occasion to unite the world in the fight against the disease through raising awareness, educating the public, and lobbying for change.

6th February is Safer Internet Day, a day that encourages families, libraries and schools to learn and connect together, taking positive actions and teaching each other about staying safe online.

13th February is the Apology Anniversary, this day is a mark of respect of the achievement that was the apology to

the Stolen Generations, and a reminder to the broader public, to the country’s politicians and policy makers, that sorry is more than a word, and that communities and government politicians and policy makers must continue to work together in order to achieve key outcomes for the Stolen Generations.

14th February is Valentines Day. Whether you have met the love of your life or not, expressing warmth and appreciation for those who mean the most in our lives can only be a good thing.

So shake off the sentiment that it is only a commercial day to make money, or that it should be Valentines Day every day of the year, and give those you love a special hug, a kind word, or buy those flowers (in fact you’re helping the local economy). And would you know it, it’s also National Condom Day (what a coincidence), raising awareness for sexual health and family planning!

16th February is Chinese New Year which falls on the first day of the Chinese calendar, and continues for 15 days.

During celebrations people clean their houses to drive away the bad luck of the previous year. 2016 is the year of the Monkey.

18th February is International Asperger’s Day, a day aimed at highlighting the significance of Asperger syndrome for both society and individuals.

It’s a day to both celebrate difference and educate yourself about an oftenmisunderstood syndrome.

24th February is Teal Ribbon Day, on this day all Australians are invited to purchase and wear a teal ribbon from Ovarian Cancer Australia to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer. Teal Ribbons can be purchased directly from Ovarian Cancer Australia or from Chemmart Pharmacies and Spotlight.

Welcome to the first monthly column by your Echo reporters, Bec and Nat. By offering our own perspective on the little things in life as well as some bigger issues, we hope to start some conversations. We are both mums of school aged children, as well as pre-schoolers, and come from different backgrounds, Bec grew up in the country near Port Lincoln, and Nat grew up in the suburbs of Sydney. Sometimes we agree with each other and sometimes we don’t, and that’s just life isn’t it! We hope you enjoy the first “Let’s Chat with Bec & Nat” segment of your local paper.

LET’S CHAT WITH BEC & NAT New year’s resolutions generally revolve around health and well-being.

We all want to be the best versions of ourselves, but due to the hard work of introducing new habits and kicking some unhealthy, albeit enjoyable, habits to the side, we commonly wait for some astrological miracle to occur at the stroke of midnight January 1 to thrust us into a new era of awesomeness.

I was no different this year as I decided that I would save some calories- and cash- by cutting back on my weekly alcohol in-take.

So I’m all in! No weekday wine, and I’m doing well.

I grew up in a household where my parents drank wine, responsibly, with dinner each evening, so for me it is a homely habit.

The kids have asked where my drink is, I told them I’m leaving it for the weekend.

They laughed, but it is largely becoming a new normal in my home, and I am smugly patting my own back.

What I had been noticing, for

some time however, is how much the culture of drinking- drinking regularly and drinking excessively, is normalised in social media, either by funny memes or by prominent personalities posting their regular drinking sessions and hangovers on facebook.

No judgement here, just for the record, I’m sure many of us have woken up chanting the mantra, ‘I’m never drinking again’ to whoever will listen.

But to publicly normalise that, is not cool.

Recently Bob Hawke was once again lauded as a bloody Australian legend for skulling a beer at the cricket, and as much as I can see the lighter side of the achievement, the older my kids get and the more I try to see the world through their eyes, the less comfortable I am with public admissions, even promotion of, excessive drinking.

Does this make me un-Australian? Am I becoming an old stick in the mud? What do you think Bec? Well Nat, I am one of those

Australians who grew up thinking drinking every day was normal and those who abstained were on the outer.

Coming from a small rural community on the Eyre Peninsula as I did, nothing was thought of having a quiet beer or two at the end of a hard day’s work.

And just like those ads we see every other day on TV, where the child is asked to get their dad a beer from the fridge, that was my reality too.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s I’m sure it was common practice, with no-one the wiser for the flow-on effects and possible life-long problems this pattern could have.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for having a sensible drink or two, and for sure have drunk to excess on more than one occasion – they didn’t have the 50c schooner at the uni pub for nothing!

But I too, as I grow older and now have the responsibility of helping my children navigate and make sense of an ever-changing world, am worried at just what

they think is “normal” drinking behaviour.

Is it a quiet drink on your verandah as you silently salute the sun going down?

Is it attending a celebration like a wedding or work Christmas party and waking up the morning after with one shoe missing and a tattoo?

For me I can only hope I lead by example and help give my children the tools to make the right decisions for themselves at the right time. And if not, support them through the consequences.

It is okay to say no, or to have just one or two drinks. And don’t forget as an added bonus “Designated Driver Dave” often gets free non-alcoholic drinks.

Enjoying the fruits of your labour Already it is February and we may be enjoying our beautiful summer fruits with the anticipation of still more to come.

Remember though to keep up the hygiene in the orchard and remove all fallen fruit and either compost or bin to prevent the spread of disease.

It is important to keep watering your trees to prevent them becoming stressed and to ensure a crop for next year.

Dead head your agapanthus to prevent them from spreading far and wide!

A general tidy up and deadheading is, as ever, on the to do list.

Consistent watering is vital in your vegetable garden.

AMATEUR Blossom End Rot in tomatoes is GARDENER caused by the inadequate uptake of calcium out of the soil with a contributing cause being inconsistent watering causing the plant to stress.

Bitter tasting cumbers can also be caused by inconsistent watering with the end nearest the stalk being the least tasty.

Mulch the vegetable patch and try and prevent the soil from drying out.

Lemon trees also need a good watering regime.

They dislike wet feet but if the lemons are dropping before maturing or having cracked skins observe the water AMATEUR regime you are using.

GARDENER Vegetables that may be planted out this month are carrots, onions, cabbages and celery.

If planning a spring bulb show, preparation of your garden beds should now be started.

Dig over the garden bed and apply some aged animal manure with some compost if available.

Bulbs need the soil to be well drained soil and dislike wet feet.

If planning to plant Tulips they need to be winter chilled for four to eight weeks in the crisper part of your fridge.

T spike faces With Ranunculi the downward and with Anemones, the point of the corm, must be facing downwards- these two are different from the other spring flowering bulbs.

The Town of Two Wells gives a magnificent display of Crepe Myrtles – lagerstroemia indica- every summer.

It would be hard to find better specimens of street trees growing in our own region.

The flowers come in shades of mauve, white and pink with the leaves giving an autumn display as well.

The trees develop beautiful E shiny coloured trunks giving winter interest plus producing flowers for nearly three months.

Crepe myrtles may be pruned or left to just grow- up to your own choice.

The flowers are reminiscent of crepe paper hence the name.

They are native to India and SouthEast Asia but grow so well in South Australia.

The new varieties are resistant to powdery mildew and the Two Wells street trees are a beautiful sight in the heat of summer.

Wells Girls have been busy!

Report: Caroline Hardiman We hope 2018 finds everyone safe and well.

After a busy few months for the Wells Girls CWA branch, the next few months look to be full of activity.

At the end of 2017 we held a stall at the Two Wells street parade – the night was very successful. We had quite an interest in our crafty goods and homemade lemonade.

Looking to the year ahead, we will again be holding bingo nights at the Two Wells Bowling Club, coinciding with the Blue Light discos. Dates and times will be confirmed soon.

With the success of the crafty afternoons last year, as a branch we plan to continue these at the Old Council Chamber, on the first Saturday of each month, the next being March 3.

Book Reviews The Two Wells Book Club usually submit a review for Echo readers of the book that was jointly read by members the month previously.

This month however, two book club members chose a book they enjoyed reading over the Christmas period to review.

Christobel Crabb ‘Dancing on Broken Glass’, by Ka Hancock This is an emotional story of good old-fashioned deep love, the mental illness of one partner, and the progress of cancer in the other partner.

Mickey has bipolar disorder, and had already decided that marriage was not something that he could commit to.

Lucy falls for him, and convinces him that, with the aid of written rules and regulations to which they must both promise to adhere, love will find a way.

One of the agreements was that there would be no children, but then Lucy discovers that, against all odds, she is pregnant, and soon after is told her breast cancer has returned.

Treatment for the cancer cannot proceed while Lucy is pregnant, but the cancer is so aggressive that she may not survive until the baby’s birth.

The story is told alter-

nating between Mickey’s and Lucy’s point of view, which helps the reader to understand each character and how they deal with their own dilemmas.

Lucy’s two sisters are important characters in the book, each with her own opinions on how to help.

The author has specialised in working with psychiatric patients, and her understanding of mental health and how it affects families is portrayed well.

Without revealing too much of the story, the bulk of the book is the race between the developing pregnancy and the progress of the aggressive cancer.

A good read that involves subjects not often discussed in a non-specialised way, but should be.

Fran Taplin ‘Victoria Victorious’,

by Jean Plaidy The recent acclaimed TV series, ‘Victoria’, closely followed this book.

We will be making chutney, using recipes from our lovely members.

We will be creating a tomato chutney, and also utilising some home grown veggies to make a zucchini chutney.

Our March meeting (March 20) will be preparing items for the Northern Plains Food Festival, where we will have tea and scones as well as a craft display/ table.

Being close to ANZAC day, our April meeting (April 17) will be cooking ANZAC biscuits.

Two Wells CFS would like to prompt people who have dogs or animals to keep them locked away when emergency services are called to an emergency at or near their home.

Animals, especially dogs can become frightened and defensive when they see us arrive in a noisy fire truck with lights flashing.

We then enter the property to attend to the emergency and are quite often greeted by an angry dog who is not happy to see us in our yellow fire uniforms.

This can prohibit or delay our efforts to attend to the job at hand, potentially putting lives and property at risk. We attended an incident recently where one of our crew was nipped on the ankle by a little dog, luckily the dog didn’t like the taste and ran off quickly with no injury.

This serves as a reminder for us all to be cautious and residents to keep their animals locked away and safe.

The other thing I have noticed at some recent calls is bad access to properties.

While the gates have been wide enough some trees planted close by have restricted our access by being overgrown.

Please ensure we can get our fire truck into your driveways (prior to an emergency) so we can respond to the fire or other emergency in the fastest possible manner.

I would also like to congratulate our Group Officer, Phillip Earl, on receiving the Adelaide Plains Council Citizen of the Year award on Australia Day at Dublin oval. Phillip is a very deserving recipient and we thank him for his service.

He became a true advisor and the love of her life.

It was a very happy marriage.

When Albert died of typhoid in 1861 she was devastated and became a recluse for much of the rest of her reign.

Victoria reigned for 63 years and this period has become known as the ‘Victorian’ period.

A great read of a remarkable and determined woman whose nine children married into various royal houses of Europe thus causing great concern in times of war.

As a task force member/Landcarer, I was invited to the Adelaide Museum to witness the opening of a new exhibition focusing on the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park (AIBS) Winaityinaityi Pangkara (pronounced Wee-nay-chi-nay-chi Pan-ker-a).

You may have heard me talk about the AIBS before but this piece of paradise encompasses 60 kilometres of coastline from Barker Inlet through to Pt Parham with a large percentage of this sanctuary bordering our region and is recognised worldwide.

Each year around 2,000,000 migratory shorebirds travel vast distances from their breeding sites in the Arctic to reach nonbreeding grounds in Australia.

These amazing global travellers (some of these birds only weigh a few grams) fly half way across the world along a migratory path called the East Asian-Australasian Flyway to reach the safe haven of our South Australian coastlines, where they feed and roost for six months of the year.

The AIBS National Park has been created as a vital conservation area for the protection of shorebird habitat.

It provides a unique place of annual refuge for up to 52 species of birds.

In the language of the Kaurna People, the traditional owners of the Adelaide Plains, Winaityinaityi Pangkara means ‘a country for all birds and the country that surrounds these birds’.

When I was a child, many of my friends and I would ride our bikes through the bird sanctuary, well that’s what we called it at that time.

I remember it was one of those places where we could explore and fish.

echo 21 Dear Diary…Two Wells resident, Diane Stanley, jetsetted to Paris with her sister, Deb, for a taste of Parisian culture…

Paris In Autumn We have all heard the saying, ‘Paris in the springtime’, yet having returned from a two-week trip in Paris in the Autumn, I feel truly blessed.

Paris is a fabulous city with many places to explore.

My sister, Deb, was turning 50 and has been learning French for two years…not that we needed an excuse to go.

My family gave me a two-week leave pass!

Deb and I were full of excitement, so off we flew to embrace the Parisian culture.

For most of our trip we stayed in St Germain as it is very central and easy to get around by foot or by train.

The streets were adorned with high end fashion labels eg Chanel, Prada, Gucci and cafes and restaurants with every tastebud delight imaginable.

In the mornings we would stroll to the local patisseries for freshly made croissants and baguettes, take them back to our apartment to devour them along with an assortment of condiments and plunger coffee, a great way to start the day!

Deb and I walked many kilometres each day thus I treated myself to a pair of walking shoes from the Galeries Lafayette as my boots just weren’t going to cut it.

Classic black attire is generally worn by both the men and women during the day, accompanied by dark coloured scarves, gloves and hats.

Of course, I wore a black coat!

But my scarves were colourful in either apricot, white and silver, or green tones.

I didn’t feel out of place as there were millions of tourists.

For Deb’s birthday I took her to dinner at Le Grand Colbert, the restaurant mentioned in the movie, ‘Something’s Gotta Give’.

One of Diane Keating’s lines in the movie is, “we’ll meet in Paris at Le Grand Colbert, they do great chicken”.

The decor was beautiful, and the menu…..very French.

Deb thoroughly enjoyed her chicken as I did my veal, then

we went on to Harry’s Bar for a cocktail.

Harry’s Bar is said to be a little piece of Manhattan in Paris.

It has been open for over 100 years, with many writers gathering there back in the day of Ernest Hemmingway.

The place was a buzz with a mixture of tourists and locals, a great bar to enjoy a cocktail.

There are many art galleries and museums to peruse in Paris.

My favourite museum was the Musee D’Orsay, which once upon a time was a train station.

We spent most of the day viewing artworks, sculptures and tapestries from the renaissance to modern era.

I would go there again!

Near to where we were staying there were several art galleries and I spotted a gorgeous colourful canvas by a local artist of Paris life centering around the Eiffel Tower.

I had to leave it sitting in the window on its easel as the price cost more than my trip!

Deborah and I had lunch at Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower.

It was an amazing experience, and the view from our table did not disappoint.

One cannot go to Paris without going to the Moulin Rouge, an upbeat two hours show full of dance and acrobatic displays, all colourful and professionally done, no one missed a beat.

It is cleverly put together and I think a couple of the dancers were from Australia.

Deb and I had prepaid our tickets for balcony seating so on arrival we were personally taken by a host to our table and presented with a bottle of Bollinger, must say I didn’t mind the VIP treatment!

On our third day in Paris we caught a train to Reims, it was a quick train ride of 46 minutes.

Reims and surrounding areas are where all the Champagne Houses are, we had booked a B&B for two nights.

I expected the area to look similar to our Barossa Valley but no, it was more like a city, and we were disappointed we hadn’t

booked for a longer stay.

I will definitely go back again one day to explore more.

Our hosts at the B&B were very accommodating.

While there, one of the days we went on a full-day tour.

Our host, Valentin, took us to three Champagne Houses that

we had never heard of and which were magnificent.

After bringing a bottle home from the first place we stopped at, I am now in the process of seeing if we can get more delivered here in Australia.

Paris is known as the city of love and one cannot help but fall

A little direction for drone pilots Drones, or quadcopters, were a popular gift under the Christmas tree last year, with excitement soon turning to tears for those who hastily unwrapped and took theirs straight outside for a quick test flight.

With little knowledge and a lack of experience for owners, the wind on Christmas Day plucked the lightweight aircraft into the sky and way out of view within seconds of launching.

Community facebook pages were the first port of call for owners searching for their lost Christmas gift, tales of tears flowing from youngsters who had specifically requested a drone as their ‘big ticket’ item for the year.

Unfortunately, unbeknownst to first time pilots, weather conditions are key to a successful flight, as is GPS tracking.

The correct term for a drone is a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and the Civil Aviation Safety

Authority (CASA) has some guidelines on flying RPAs for recreation and commercial use.

Flying drones for fun still requires common sense, and you may not be aware of the hazard created when a small aircraft is zipping through the sky overhead.

First lesson for new owners, do not fly when it is windy!

No matter how eager you may be, if there is a breeze, you’re best waiting for another time.

Once the wind has dissipated, you’ve made you’re way outside and the aircraft has lifted, remember to stay below 120 metres (400 ft) off the ground.

Always stay 30 metres away from people, and keep the drone away from areas affecting public safety or where emergency operations are underway.

Don’t operate your drone in prohibited or restricted areas or fly over or above people.

This could include festivals, sporting ovals, populated beaches, parks, busy roads and footpaths.

You must not operate your drone in a way that creates a hazard to another aircraft, person, or property.

You must keep your drone at least 5.5km away from controlled aerodromes (usually those with a control tower).

And remember, once you’ve gained confidence and ability with practise, extend common courtesy to those around you.

Whether you fly for fun or commercial use, having an aircraft with camera recording capabilities is intrusive to people’s privacy.

echo 22 Two Wells Football Club president, Michael Slattery, reports on the club’s progress, as well as ins and outs for 2018.

Roosters boosted by returns The club looks forward to another successful year in 2018 after an A grade premiership over Mallala in 2017.

Last year also saw premierships for our U14 Football, 13A and A5 Netball teams.

The A grade has seen a couple of retirements but also the return of a number of good A graders who have had a year or two off.

The pre-season sessions have seen very good numbers as the boys are keen to be part of further success.

A good core group of mature and developing youngsters in this playing group, under the guidance of Neville “Cheeky” Seccafien, should again be very competitive this season with a strong chance of being there again at the end.

The senior netball has just got under way, with a couple of fitness training sessions under their belts.

This year sees a few new recruits and some returning players.

Last season saw four of our senior teams make it to the final four with the A5s grabbing the trophy.

Hopefully these teams will be able to take it a step further in 2018.

We should have good numbers in our juniors again this year which bodes well for the future of our club.

Hopefully we can provide opportunities for these youngsters to develop their skills and passion and continue on to be a strong part of our club’s future.

Last year the club engaged Leading

Teams a consultancy group specialising in developing high performance organisations.

This was a chance to step back from the everyday running of the club and consider why we exist, what is our purpose, where do we want to be, how might we get better and what values and behaviours are needed to achieve where we want to go?

As part of this we developed a new motto “Believe – Unite – Achieve”.

Basically if we believe in the club and each other and where we are going and then unite and work together then we can achieve both on and off the sporting field.

We also looked at our purpose: “We exist to provide a sustainable sporting

club within our community”, values, cultures and behaviour and are looking to develop them with players, parents and members this year.

I would also like to see more people get involved in various ways around the club this year as volunteers with teams or general club roles.

At present we are seeking a canteen manager, bar manager and kitchen manager for Thursday and Saturday meals.

We are also still looking for coaches for A3 and A4 netball as well as U8 and U11 football coaches.

Virginia Cricket Club in the Pink Bec O’Brien reports: The Virginia Cricket Club will once again hold a Pink Stumps Day to raise much needed funds for the McGrath Foundation.

The event on February 17 at the Virginia Oval will see the club play rivals Dublin.

A grade player, Ashley Nicholas, said over the past six years the club has raised close to $5,000 from similar events.

“We are hoping to build on that tally again this season,” Ashley said.

“The club is also holding a ‘Past Players Day’ on the day and hopes a big crowd can come down and support the foundation.”

Teams will take to the field at 1pm with some drinks and light snacks provided.

Leos will lead Hot Shots again Two Wells Districts Tennis Club will run an eight-week Hot Shots program this term as well as squad development training.

On the back of another successful term last year, with numbers topping 35 in attendance each week, TWDTC junior coordinator, Marie Tapscott, says the program is growing from strength to strength.

Hot Shot coaches Haydn and Rebecca Leo will once again be back, leading participants through a range of tennis skill, fitness and coaching sessions.

Coaching nights kicked off on Tuesday January 30 and will run until Tuesday March 20.

Currently there are four teams competing in the Gawler and District Tennis with hopes of adding a fifth team in the Hot Shots Orange ball competition The end of the season will be celebrated on Saturday March 24 with teams in the grand finals in the morning, followed by the club’s presentation day for all tennis children at the home courts.

teams, are currently on top of the ladder and as such are a strong possibility of featuring on grand final day.

Saturday Teams in Division 1, Division 2 and Green Ball commenced back from the summer break on Saturday February 3.

Vida Oliver is playing her 50th Season of Pennant bowls this year!

Vida joined Two Wells Bowling Club in 1967. She was Women’s president in 19823 and then took on the role of Women’s secretary for the next 21 years!

On two occasions Vida also capably filled the role of Women’s president of Wooroora Bowling Association and has also been a patron.

On the green, Vida has a very impressive record with six Singles championships and was runner up nine times.

Teaming up with the late Lil Gameau, they won the Country Carnival Pairs in 1973 and the Wooroora Women’s Champion of Champions in 2000/2001.

Vida’s successes in other club tournaments, State and association events are too numerous to list, however her dedication to Two Wells Bowling Club is evidenced on the honour boards around the clubhouse.

Vida is a valued and cherished patron andLife Member of the club.

What a great asset! Congratulations Vida.

PENNANT TEAMS are into the last half of the season with mixed results.

Weather has played havoc with scheduled matches being cancelled due to the heat or called off before the match finished.

It has been great to see novice players enjoying pennants and it is hoped that next year the club will gain a few more from the Night Bowls brigade.

The Ladies team is doing well sitting in third place on the ladder in Division 3 North.

NIGHT BOWLS is being well supported currently. There was an impressive total of 41 players the last night before the break for Christmas but around 25 players turn up most Tuesday nights.

Registration is at 6.30pm with games starting at 7pm. Cost is $5 per player.

If you haven’t been before, it is not too late to join in.

Everyone is catered for and the bowls are supplied.

Friendly rivalry is rife on the night and lots of laughs are had at the end of night when a light supper is served.

On the Road to Success A chance spin on a test bike at Adelaide’s famous Tour Down Under cycling event last year, was the catalyst behind one family’s move from regional Victoria to Two Wells.

Fourteen-year-old Kaitlyn Paton and her family, mum Kylie, dad David and nine-year-old brother Joshua, packed up and moved to South Australia following Kaitlyn’s acceptance into Cycling South Australia’s Talent ID program.

The family are all keen cyclists and was in Adelaide attending the Tour Down Under event where they were visiting the tour village when Kaitlyn had a turn on a stationary bike at the South Australian Sport Institute’s (SASI) tent.

This “test tent” recorded her revs per minute, speed and time.

Thinking little of it, the family was surprised when they were later contacted by the SASI talent search program, who believed Kaitlyn’s results on the bike showed promise as a track cyclist.

only 36 invited to take part in a come and try session later that year.

Kaitlyn was one of those who took part in the session at the state’s velodrome and from this was invited to joint the Talent ID Program.

She hopes to progress in the coming months and be invited into SASI’s state junior cycling program.

The Paton’s had an open mind as to where they would live and found the new Eden development at Two Wells on the internet.

A whirlwind day visit to view the estate and some allotments of interest was all it took for the family to make the life-changing decision.

They are currently in the process of building their dream home at the estate.

“We could have moved anywhere in Adelaide, but once we saw Eden we knew it was where we wanted to live,” Kylie said.

“Eden is going to be a brilliant place to live once it’s fully

developed.

“It’s going to have everything we need – and then some.”

Kaitlyn is currently training two times a week on the track at Gepps Cross and is learning all the skills required to make a great track cyclist.

As well as swimming and netball, cycling has been a big part of Kaitlyn’s life.

“I’ve always liked riding but because of Dad’s accident I wasn’t keen on riding on the road,” Kaitlyn said, referring to a serious bike accident that very nearly claimed the life of her dad, David, a few years ago.

“I had to find another way to enjoy the bike without going on the road and this is it.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Kaitlyn’s brother, Joshua is also a gun on the bike.

Last year he was the Under 11 Victorian Schools State Road Cycling Champion, and hopes to pursue cycling here in South Australia.
