THE grand entry to the state’s newest community master plan Riverlea was officially opened this month, linking future residents to the region via a new intersection on Port Wakefield Road.

City of Playford mayor Glenn Docherty cut the ribbon during a special event on Friday, December 10, to mark the major milestone of

the $3 billion development.

Plans involve 420ha of open space which includes 30ha of parks and lakes, bike paths and running track, plus four schools and four retail centres.

Riverlea will also welcome about 3000 homes to cater for about 12,000 residents, with move in dates set for mid 2022.

Impressively, more than 500 house and land lots have already sold, with hundreds of families on the waitlist for the next land releases.

Tracie and Aniello Tedesco are among those families who will soon call Riverlea their home.

Both agreed the opening of the boulevard had helped to bring their home vision to reality.

Think safety when using pizza ovens IF you have a pizza oven at home - or are thinking about building one this festive season - there are a few things you should keep in mind, according to the CFS. Two Wells CFS brigade captain Adam Harris said pizza ovens were often overlooked with regards to planning, operation and maintenance but there were strong guidelines for construction, operation and positioning of these popular cooking structures.

“Don’t ruin your Christmas by not being prepared as you’ll ruin ours too,” he said.

“We’re on call right throughout the festive season but would prefer to be at home with our families enjoying the holidays too.

“So, take care, stay safe and be responsible.”

Adam advised wood fired cooking devices were permitted on private properties, including webers and charcoal rotisseries, as long as they are properly constructed and there is a four-meter clearance above and around all flammable material.

The fire is also limited to no larger than one square meter and a reliable person must be nominated and present to control the flames from the time it is lit until it is extinguished.

“This is only for normal days during the fire danger season, however,” Adam said.

“On days that are declared ‘Total Fire Ban Days” no wood fired cooking devices or open fires are to be lit unless you have obtained a schedule 10 permit from the council.”

A range of requirements relating to flues, spark arrestors, clearances and extinguishing agents are also required.

Christmas messages from our Mayors Glenn Docherty, City of Playford

Ben’s mighty river support ​Cruising the River Murray as part of Novita’s 2021 Mighty River Run were local residents, Phil Davenport, Brandon Arnold (back seat), Trevor Spong (driver), Ben Pratt and Nick Andrews.

BEC O’BRIEN THERE’S a common saying that ‘a bad day on the river beats a good day at work’.

For Two Wells Football Club junior manager Ben Pratt this was all too true as he gave up time from work to take part in Novita’s 15th Mighty River Run held from November 6-11.

With a group of mates, Ben cruised the River Murray for the third year in a row, helping to raise awareness and funds for kids, young people and adults living with disability.

The event also aims to support families and their carers by providing services and equipment.

River Run participants spend each day rising early and cruising from town to town along the river, where they wave to people on the banks and stop at designated places each night.

“We support the townships best we can, and we raise funds through various activities such as auction items,” Ben said.

“Client day is always the biggest highlight of the event.

“The day is filled with activities ranging from arts and crafts to sports.”

Ben says he spent a long time playing basketball with a gentleman who lives with non-verbal cerebral palsy and a young lady called Lucy, who is one of the Novita ambassadors. He believes this day is by far the most enjoyable and at the same time, most challenging.

“Seeing kids and their families smile takes your breath away,” he said.

“On behalf of the City of Playford, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

2021 has, for many of us, been another challenging year.

We have continued to live under the shadow of COVID-19 and the unpredictable nature of this global pandemic.

I want to thank everyone who has patiently and diligently followed the rules and received a vaccination via the clinics across our community.

By working together, we are keeping our community and our families safe.

The hailstorms in October wreaked destruction on our horticultural industry and caused widespread damage to many households and vehicles across the region.

Council has been working with PIRSA to support affected farmers on the road to recovery.

We still have much to be thankful for living in the City of Playford.

Your council is continuing to focus on improving the quality of life in the growth areas of Angle Vale, Virginia and Buckland Park/Riverlea.

We remain committed to the Virginia Main Street program and hope to be in a position to talk more about this exciting initiative in the new year.

I’m also excited that Riverbanks College – the new birth to Year 12 school at Angle Vale – will open next year, at the start of term one.

Enrolments will steadily grow to see around 1600 students attend this world-class educational facility.

Finally, I hope you and your family have a blessed and restful Christmas.

Along with his mates, Ben hopes to take part in the Mighty River Run each year, with this year’s event raising about $750,000.

Worst sports courts upset members BEC O’BRIEN Two Wells District Tennis Club members fear its popular coaching and competitive programs will be severely impacted following significant deterioration of playing surfaces.

According to the club, the condition of the six tennis and four netball courts are in need of major repair works, adding that visiting teams are left disappointed by the ailing community facility.

The club now considers hiring courts outside the district for member safety.

“Having kids play on dangerous courts is unacceptable and the possibility of injury is high,” tennis club president Marie Tapscott said.

“We have already had several trips and slips resulting in first aid attention to children and the visiting teams of Virginia, Tod Street and Trinity College were appalled at the state of our courts.

“We officially have the worst courts in the region; it’s embarrassing.”

Marie said at the start of the summer playing season, members discovered a section of one of the courts had lifted above the surface making it dangerous and unusable.

Adelaide Plains Council, who was contacted, responded by fixing the damage, however the club felt it was a “band-aid resolution”.

“The result is it’s still too dangerous and a trip hazard for children or adults to use in a match situation,” Marie said.

“The court can only be used for a casual hit with a traffic cone over the patch.”

The loss of the court has come at the worst

time for the club when it is experiencing record numbers for junior and senior tennis which saw numbers double this season, and was impacting the junior competition immensely.

Marie said only two courts were in “fair playable condition” and was worried the club would be unable to continue to offer its high-quality coaching and tennis programs if not properly fixed.

“This will impact the children in the community as well as the financial situation of the club,” she said.

“The club recently won a grant to upgrade the lighting from virtually non-existent to tournament level.

“Sadly, the new lights show up the poor court surface even more.”

Earlier this year the club invested $30,000 to establish new clubroom facilities at the courts and says it is looking into hiring or using courts of neighbouring clubs to run its coaching programs and play competitive matches.

“The scheduled junior and senior matches are being relocated to other clubs’ courts for safety reasons which results in fewer people visiting our town and patronising the businesses such as the bakery, coffee shops and other wonderful shops we have,” Marie said.

“This is not an ideal situation for a rapidly growing club and community.

“We understand that we are not going to have a solution in the short term, however the Mallala and Long Plains courts were upgraded in the recent Drought Communities Funding, while the Two Wells courts were once again over-looked.”

ADELAIDE Plains Council have this month announced their Australia Day award recipients ahead of breakfast celebrations hosted for Wednesday, January 26.

Award nominations were considered during the council’s ordinary meeting held on December 13.

Award winners are: Australia Day Citizen of the Year – Allan Parker.

He has been a dedicated volunteer, up-keeping the Long Plains Memorial Hall for most of his adult life. Allan has been responsible for the preservation of the Long Plains local history collection, with the comprehensive picture gallery in the hall’s kitchen covering local pioneers from the 1880’s.

Leah Clifton echoed Marie’s sentiments, saying the infrastructure was “not up to standard” for a growing town.

“Each time a club visits to play they complain about the state of the courts,” Leah said.

“If it rains, they become especially dangerous and we can’t even train.

“Something needs to be done before someone seriously hurts themselves.”

In response, Adelaide Plains Council CEO James Miller said the courts were inspected

last month and a trip hazard was identified and repaired.

“The inspection also noted that the court surfaces are in a poor condition, however, are not unsafe,” Mr Miller stated.

“Council staff will continue to monitor the court surface condition.”

Mr Miller said the council’s recently adopted Infrastructure and Asset Management Plan for 2023 to 2025 provided for the renewal of courts at the club.

For over 30 years, the team has successfully undertaken numerous projects in Two Wells. The group is a notfor-profit organisation whose community minded members advocate and support various projects that improve and enhance the township’s facilities. Projects range from securing funding for the installation of a pump track at Hart Reserve to the co-ordination of the very popular Two Wells Xmas Street parades.

A free, fully cooked breakfast will be provided by the Two Wells Cricket Club from 8am, with council mayor Mark Wasley officiating and Australia Day Ambassador Barry Lewis in attendance.

All Australia Day presentations for the categories of Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Project of the Year, and Community Group of the Year will begin at 9am.

Unfortunate end to RSL branch BEC O’BRIEN AFTER more than two decades of supporting returned Australian soldiers and their families the Two Wells RSL branch will officially close at the end of this month.

Declining membership and the unfortunate impact of COVID-19 has meant the branch cannot operate to its full capacity.

Branch secretary John Allen said it was a sad day for the community but the small number of volunteers left could not do it all.

The branch held regular Friday night teas for its members and was proud of its family-friendly atmosphere but was forced to close for 12 months in March 2020 when the pandemic hit.

“Normally we’d get 60 people in here [the RSL hall] but we can only have 26 at the most with the current restrictions,” John said.

“I think the biggest achievement is that we’ve had a family environment here in this club.

“The mateship is just fantastic, and the community vibe here is incredible, it’s really a lovely community and the heart of it is wonderful.”

John was instrumental in helping to secure the much-loved Leopard armoured tank in 2011 that currently draws visitors and locals alike to the peaceful War Memorial Garden.

The garden was the brainchild of branch president Tony Flaherty, whose vision helped establish an important monument to all Australian soldiers, particularly those killed in Afghanistan.

“The war memorial garden has been massive and the camaraderie and the general feel

“I’m disappointed that we’re closing but proud of what we’ve achieved.”

Over the years the RSL has led Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services, with numbers growing steadily until it was standing

The branch has raised thousands of dollars for the community and despite its closure local volunteers would continue to hold remembrance services at the War Memorial Garden, John said.

Two Wells RSL has been a big supporter of the Ride Against Suicide motorcycle event which stopped in Two Wells and aimed to raise awareness of suicide and the ripple effect it has on friends, families, colleagues, and the broader community.

Dangerous potholes cause driver angst BEC O’BRIEN DRIVERS using Penfield Road at Virginia are being forced to cross the line to avoid a series of potholes, which nearby residents fear could result in accidents.

Andrew Mathews, who has lived on Penfield Road for the past two decades, is among those concerned.

The market gardener said since the Northern Expressway was completed in 2010, Penfield Road had seen a notable increase in traffic.

He shares how residents avoid crossing Port Wakefield Road and instead use the Northern Expressway before exiting at Penfield Road and then on to Virginia.

“The edges of the road just drop off,” Mr Mathews said.

“They need to be sealed about an extra metre wide all the way along.

“We used to have not much traffic but since the Northern Expressway has gone in we have 10 times that now.

Mr Mathews expressed his concerns about the road to City of Playford deputy mayor Peter Rentoulis.

In reponse, the mayor is

campaigning to have the state government road repaired by the Department for Transport and Infrastructure (DIT).

Mr Rentoulis said he organised a site visit with DIT to inspect the road in late November as well as sending evidential photos, and said he was “staggered” by the response provided by the department to his concerns.

“The surface is not good for motor vehicles using it every day.

“In addition to this, I am advised by residents that they cross over onto the opposite side of the road in order to avoid the potholes.

“This is likely to lead to a serious accident.”

Mr Rentoulis said Penfield Road had major deficiencies that needed to be repaired immediately including more than 100 potholes, some measuring more than one metre in diameter.

The stretch also includes significant damage to bitumen between King Road and Old Port Wakefield Road.

“The edges along parts of Penfield Road are non-existent in places and often drop off more than 200mm on some

parts of the road,” Mr Rentoulis said.

“Penfield Road is now a major arterial road used by thousands of motorists each day and I would ask DIT to reconsider their position and to do something to improve road safety as a matter of urgency.

“It’s causing damage to people’s cars and it’s a potential crash hazard; people could hit a pothole and lose control.”

He suggested the department conduct an updated traffic count to get a more accurate idea of the number of vehicles using the road daily.

Virginia resident Richard Pateman thanked Mr Rentoulis for continuing to campaign for improved roads in the region. “It is very dangerous,” Mr Pateman said.

“Especially having to dodge the potholes and watch the traffic at the same time, besides the damage to our vehicles.”

A DIT spokesperson told the Echo that additional investigations are currently underway to identify priority sections of the road for heavy asphalt patching works to prevent further damage to the City of Playford deputy mayor Peter Rentoulis and Virginia resident Andrew Mathews road surface. inspect potholes along Penfield Road.

Council gains storm relief assistance ADELAIDE Plains Council is one of the 24 state zones to be provided much-needed assistance after severe weather including heavy hail hit the agricultural region on October 28. The assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

The support means the council will receive funds to cover costs of the extensive clean up and repair works to public assets such as roads.

Furthermore, the plan seeks to enable personal and financial counselling to be carried out to help impacted individuals.

Chiefly, support in the region includes: • Co-ordination of waste removal from Northern Adelaide Plains horticulture properties • Waiving the solid waste levy on debris collected as a result of the storms in the Northern Adelaide Plains • Access to personal and financial counselling statewide, including on-site at the Virginia.

Two Wells shines in inaugural festive celebration

TWO Wells’ inaugural “Twinkling” has been hailed a success, with families gathering to share a picnic and celebrate the festive season at the town’s village green for the official launch of the Christmas lights competition on Friday, December 3.

Set against a stunning sunset backdrop, the newly formed Two Wells Twinkling Band played carols as Two Wells Regional Action Team hosts Jack Harris and Amy Barwick welcomed the community to the event.

Adelaide Plains Council mayor Mark Wasley officially turned on the Christmas tree lights to the giant community tree. Adelady television presenters Hayley Pearson and Lauren De Cesare announced the winners of the Christmas lights competition.

Two Wells Twinkling co-ordinator Anna White said the event was an opportunity to bring the whole community, including the new satellite estates, together.

“The launch was fantastic and the band played beautifully, setting the tone for an enjoyable evening,” she said.

“The lighting of the Christmas tree was an outstanding highlight, as was seeing so many people relishing the time spent with family in the pristine village green, enjoying the whole event and the winners being so pleased with their efforts.”

Anna said the Adelady hosts were an exciting

addition to the evening and it was lovely to see everyone relaxing.

“Personally, I am so pleased and appreciative of everyone’s efforts as the joy of Christmas is being spread throughout our community for all, especially the children, to delight in,” she said.

Mayor Wasley was equally thrilled to see the town’s new community space being used as the council had envisioned.

“How good is this,” he said before flicking the switch to light the Christmas tree.

“This is what Christmas is about; it’s fantastic but there’s a lot of background work and preparation that goes into it. Next year will be bigger and better.

“We’re still a relatively small town but boy we can achieve a lot together.”

Mud maps of businesses, houses and streets taking part in the Twinkling are available from businesses along the main street of the town, or the Two Wells Craft Shop.

Twilight market unites community BEC O’BRIEN THIS year’s event once again showcased the beauty of the town’s community garden situated at the rear of the local craft shop, with more than 30 stalls offering a range of goods from plants, jewellery, clothing, artwork and soaps to metal work, books, hand crafted items, bric-a-brac and more.

With the cancellation of the popular Two Wells Christmas Street Parade for the second year running residents from far and wide flocked to the market.

The Two Wells Twinkling Band were on hand to entertain with Christmas carols and Father Christmas could be heard ‘ho, ho, ho-ing’ and ringing his bell from his position in the old jail cell.

“It was a fantastic night and every stall holder was very happy with the outcome,” market organiser and community garden volunteer Marie Tapscott said.

“The stall holders said it was one of the best markets they had ever been to and we’ve had lots of

messages of support and congratulations.”

The crowd flowed through the market all afternoon, which this year spilled out of the community garden and used vacant space at the rear of the premises. Many families took the opportunity to share food and drinks from local businesses on the village green lawn.

“That’s exactly what we’d hoped for,” Marie said.

“The whole idea for this market was to bring together the community, to showcase local handcrafted goods from people in our region and to incorporate the businesses in the main street so that everyone benefits in the end.

Volunteers thanked at luncheon PAM DUNCAN REPORTS ON November 30 about 20 Two Wells Op-Shop volunteers and helpers attended the annual Christmas thank you luncheon at the Uniting Church Hall.

There were a few apologies, with some people having to go to work and others also having specialist appointments.

It was a very relaxed and enjoyable afternoon with a large array of food supplied and made by helpers Rae and Malcolm Wilson, Judy Heaslip and Pamela Duncan.

Pamela opened the afternoon with a special thank you to all the volunteers who without their work the Op-shop would not be able to open.

Pamela also thanked the helpers that have maintained the Op-shop by changing light globes and putting in new lights so we can actually see the light; repaired the ceiling, cleaned the fans, locked in the shelving so that it does not fall over, built a new shed, pressure cleaned the toilets and put in locks for the shed and toilets, as well as various other duties.

Malcolm Wilson then opened the meal with “Grace” and Two Wells Uniting Church chairperson Paul Schmelzkopf made a short thank you speech.

After the meal, Pamela gave a small presentation to all the volunteers and helpers, with magnificent help from Mollie Frost who knitted Santas and Rae and Malcolm who contributed delicious melting moment biscuits.

A calendar, tin biscuits, Lions cake and a few other goodies were also in the “thank you” bag.

Special thanks to Judy who did a lot of baking for the day,

with Rae, Malcolm, and Rob all making a big presence in the kitchen all day.

Rob and Judy also cleaned the hall after.

The Op-shop will be closed from Saturday December 25 and will reopen on Tuesday January 4, 2022.

Seven Days of Us a light Christmas read I’M coming to you with a ‘light’ Christmas read, meaning it’s set at Christmas time but isn’t your run of the mill cheesy, hallmark Christmas story, it could really be enjoyed at any time.

Though it was published in 2017 it is quite ‘of the time’ as it tells of the Birch family quarantining over Christmas after the oldest daughter Olivia returns from Africa working as a doctor in the throes of the Haag virus.

I really enjoyed this contemporary read, there was actually a surprising amount of drama happening within the family over the one week but it wasn’t exaggerated and seemed fairly realistic.

To start with I didn’t really like any of the characters, I found Olivia too judgmental, Phoebe too prissy, Emma a bit surface-level and Andrew a bit cowardice. But over the course of the book they each adapted to each other and became a little more bearable, to me and each other.

I liked Jesse all the way through and his storyline of being the long-lost illegitimate child of the father, Andrew.

It’s a good story of a regular family, one that struggles with open communication but learns to relate to each other after being

I totally recommend this for a nice, easy read.

As a bonus, another ‘light’ Christmas read that I’d recommend is One Day In December by Josie Silver.

Set over many years it follows the tumultuous love story of Laurie and Jack who’s first encounter is a fleeting love at first sight moment in time, and their second when Laurie is introduced to her best friend’s boyfriend… Jack.

Set in London it has a very cosy, white Christmas feel and one I often think of as one of my favourite Christmas reads.

EVENT registrations are now open for South Australia’s History Festival, which will run next year from May 1 to 31.

The festival is an initiative of the History Trust of South Australia that brings together about 400 event organisers hosting almost 650 events across our state.

The theme for next year’s festival is Reimagine, reflecting how, over the past year, the community has had opportunities to reimagine how they engage with and operate in the world.

The popular Open Doors program will be back in 2022, inviting audiences to peek behind the doors of some of the state’s most intriguing places and spaces.

The History Trust’s program for school-aged children, Poetry Takeover, is back for another year, with more students, classes and schools invited to participate in this innovative re-imagining of museum objects through poetry.

By taking part, event organisers will get a dedicated listing in the official History Festival printed and digital program and access to additional promotional tools and support.

Branch challenged and rewarded CAROLINE HARDIMAN JUST a short but sweet report this month for the Two Wells SACWA branch. 2021 has been a relatively good year, though it has had its own challenges.

We have had some restrictions but were still able to hold monthly meetings.

Being an evening branch, we are limited with our time, so we try to focus on having demonstrations and only having a meeting once every three months.

At our November meeting, we held a general meeting; we must have four of these per year.

One of the items we discussed at the meeting was the branch program for the next six months.

We have some fantastic demonstrations planned for 2022. On December 10 we were fortunate to hold a stall at the Two Wells Community Garden Christmas Twilight Market.

We sold an array of products at our stall, including cookbooks, face masks, scones, and other crafts.

It was a successful night, we had a lot of interest in our branch, with people taking flyers.

We made $233.50 and this will go to helping the SACWA association. Thank you to all that volunteered to work on the stall and thank you to all the people who came and visited us on market night.

It was great to see many people out and about.

Unfortunately, our bingo nights and craft afternoons have been put on hold and will be until further notice.

Our branch meetings are a casual format, where women can meet, share, and learn new skills, and are held on the third Tuesday of the month at the Two Wells Bowling Club.

Our next meeting will be in January 2022, where we will be having a general meeting.

It is planned for the February meeting that we celebrate our branch birthday with a dinner out.

Keeley is Xavier’s top achiever BEC O’BRIEN MALLALA teenager Keeley Menadue has capped off a stellar final year at school, receiving an impressive 98.05 Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Like thousands of year 12 students across the state, Keeley, a Xavier College student and college captain, waited anxiously on Monday, December 13 for her grades to be posted online.

“I was very surprised when I saw my results,” she said.

“My ATAR was definitely a lot higher than I expected and was a great surprise after what felt like a very long wait,” Keeley, 17, said.

“I’m so grateful for everyone who has helped me throughout the year to achieve this result,

particularly my family, friends, and teachers who I couldn’t have gotten through this year without.

“Year 12 certainly wasn’t the easiest year, but has provided many memories and experiences that I will remember forever.”

As well as an almost perfect year 12 result, Keeley was awarded a Governor’s Award for Excellence and received two Merits in the subject of Integrated Learning B and for her Research Project.

Next year she hopes to study Physiotherapy at university and is looking forward to the next chapter of her life.

“Although I’m sad that high school is now officially over, I’m excited to start 2022 with new goals and see what comes next,” Xavier College’s Year 12 Dux for 2021 was Keeley Menadue with an ATAR of 98.05 she said.

On the evening of 29 November, I was delighted to attend and chair the election of office-bearers at the Two Wells Football & Netball Sporting Club AGM. It was great to catch up with many, including the new Club President, Devon Hardiman. As a Life Member and Patron, I would like to reiterate my congratulations to all involved during the 2021 season and look forward to the first games of 2022 on the 23 April.

As a long-time advocate for suicide prevention during my Parliamentary career, it was fantastic to witness the Suicide Prevention Bill pass the South Australian Parliament during the final sitting week of 2021. The Bill puts in place a united effort to reduce suicide in our community, by establishing a permanent Suicide Prevention Council and enabling a whole-of-community approach to suicide prevention. As the first Bill of its kind in Australia, the legislation sets a precedent for other states to follow in addressing suicide prevention, and it was my privilege to produce the Bill to the Governor.

Successful school union bridged AN extensive review seeking to unite two Catholic schools in the North met with success on November 25 for current and future families.

The South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools (SACCS) confirmed that St Brigid’s Catholic School will become a Campus of Xavier College from the start of 2023.

The site will be known as Xavier College Evanston. It will complement the establishment of the Xavier College Primary Campus at Two Wells.

The newest plan, announced in late September, follows a history of ongoing discussions between the schools regarding how families Two Wells Echo, January, 2022

and students could obtain greater benefits through shared resourcing and increased collaboration.

A delighted SACCS chair, professor Denis Ralph said the amalgamation aims to provide a seamless pathway from primary to secondary Education for families in the North.

He added that it further means “unique educational opportunities, spanning early years, primary and secondary education.”

In response, Catholic Education SA director Dr Neil McGoran acknowledged the leadership of school principals Mark Flaherty, from Xavier College and Paul Bennett, from St Brigid’s Catholic School for their openness to

embrace the project.

“The reception to year 12 education plan for the college is centred on enhancing Catholic identity and improving student learning and wellbeing through a unified and collaborative approach across all of the Campuses, including Xavier College Two Wells. “ Some of the benefits to be achieved for the community and Catholic Education SA by the amalgamation include: • Increased enriched experience of Catholic education for families and students • Individualised learning and wellbeing outcomes for students throughout their education • Targeted formation and sup-

port for staff which will enhance school improvement and strategy implementation • SACCS and Catholic Education SA upholding the Church’s mission and ministry through strengthening the provision of R-12 Catholic education • Enhanced community access to and confidence in Catholic education provision for families in the northern Adelaide region The existing steering committee and implementation team will now focus their attention on preparing for the amalgamation and opening of Xavier College Evanston in 2023, in consultation with members of the both school communities.

With end of year celebrations kicking off, the Parliament of South Australia welcomed the South Australian Public Primary Schools (SAPPS) Choir to perform in Parliament House. On 7 December, the choir performed Christmas carols in the Old Chamber and on the steps of Parliament House.

This was the first time such an event has been held, and it was a pleasure to be joined by Speaker Dan Cregan MP, to officiate the event.

Keep safe throughout the holiday break EMMA WOODROOFE SOMEHOW, Christmas and 2022 are almost upon us. Unfortunately, most of the incidents we have attended so far for December have been vehicle accidents.

Christmas and the New Year is a popular time for families to hit the road for holidays.

Plan some rest stops to prevent driver fatigue and check your vehicle is ready for the drive (fuel, tyres, water, oil etc).

Stick to the posted speed limits, and if travelling at dawn or dusk keep an eye out for wildlife.

If you’re planning to have a few drinks at

the work Christmas party, do the responsible thing and organise a designated driver.

It’s not summer in Australia without a barbecue or two.

If it’s been a while since you dragged your barbecue out of the shed, and you’re on the Christmas lunch roster, take a few moments before the day to check everything is still safe.

Make sure you are using an in-date gas cylinder.

Portable cylinders must be tested every 10 years and the date of the last check should appear on the collar, neck or foot ring.

Check the hose and regulator are still in good condition, without cracks or kinks.

The hose and regulator should be connected tightly to both the cylinder and the barbecue to prevent leaks.

Drip trays should be clean of grease and oil and barbecues should only be used in well ventilated areas.

Once you’ve finished cooking up a storm, turn the gas off at the cylinder first, followed by the barbecue.

Now that we are in fire season you will also need to ensure there is a four-metre clearance around the barbecue and you have an appropriate extinguisher handy.

If you’d much rather fire up the weber, or

chuck a lamb on the spit for the Christmas Day feast keep a close eye on the weather.

If a Total Fire Ban is declared, solid fuel barbecues cannot be used.

At all other times they must have a clearance of four metres, an extinguisher handy and a person supervising who can extinguish if needed.

Garden tips at Christmas A MERRY Christmas happy New Year to all.

When the rush of the Christmas season is over, many will be thinking of the garden.

If you need a few ideas go to the community garden behind the Two Wells Craft Shop.

This garden was lovingly designed and planted by a group of residents and has flourished to become a restful place to visit and enjoy.

There is a native section which is now bringing in the birds and the succulents are well and truly established.

The toilet block has become a feature and the bees as well as other insects are provided with their own little abodes to AMATEUR habitat.

GARDENER The quirky cactus atop the large pipe makes a bold statement with the creeper over the rainwater tank gradually camouflaging it.

Anyone with an old spare wheelbarrow should take some ideas home of what succulents to grow with minimal care.

Take time to look at the plants on sale at the craft shop – they are healthy specimens being sold at a reasonable price.

Any small washed garden pots may be left there for recycling as well.

Just down from the community garden AMATEUR and next to the library is the new village GARDENER green, which is also another place to visit and perhaps enjoy a picnic there.

TWO Wells Cricket Club has received $3500 as part of the federal government’s $20 million funding package to support volunteers.

Federal Grey MP Rowan Ramsey announced the successful recipients in December, with a total funding commitment of $9522 for the Adelaide Plains region.

Two Wells Cricket Club’s funds have been earmarked to establish a point of sale retail system.

Mr Ramsey said the funding aimed to support the crucial role volunteers play within the community as Australia moved forward out of the pandemic.

“Every day I see the value of volunteering and how dedicated locals work hard to strengthen their communities,” Mr Ramsey said.

“Grey is full of community based organisations who have worked in step with businesses and families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery.”

The funding provided organisations with grants of $1000 to $5000 to help purchase equipment, training and background screening checks for volunteers.

Across the electorate of Grey, 43 organisations were successful with a total funding of $130,450.

Under 12 cricketers make it two in a row AS we all take a breath in preparation for the festive break we also need to reflect on our club’s achievements at the halfway mark of the season.

Our seniors are positioned to have a real impact in their respective final campaigns with the added support of our up and coming U16 players all contributing to that success.

Our juniors are looking good with all teams achieving some mid-season goals supported by great participation levels and team enthusiasm.

Our U16’s sit on top, our U14’s sit third with a game in hand on the top placed Craigmore while our U12’s are storming into the break winning their last two outstandings.

Fantastic support by our volunteers with great Friday night meals and family friendly atmosphere truly reflecting our on-field successes.

The club would like to thank all of its players, parents and volunteers; you are all doing the Two Wells Cricket Club truly proud.

Angle Vale batted first and made 5/110 from their 20 overs.

Best of the bowling was Curtis Clifton with 1/0 off three overs.

Other bowlers to take wickets were Blake Xenides 1/6 off two overs, Will Edwards 1/9 off three overs, Dean Shepard 1/10 and Blake Stapleton 1/14.

With the bat, Two Wells’ Jake Brechin made a good start with 17.

Curtis Clifton made 32 not out, with Blake Stapleton and Blake Xenidis each making 12.

The boys have made good progress each week and this has resulted in them winning their last two games.

Under 14

The Under 14s also took on Angle Vale in their last match before the holiday break.

Two Wells batted first making 9/112 off the allotted 20 overs.

Curtis Clifton made 23 not out and Michael Daly 16.

With some tight bowling and fielding Angle Vale could only manage 74.

Noah Henwood took 4/5 off two overs, Travis Under 12 The final round before the Christmas break saw Howat 2/2 off his only over and Curtis, Ryan and Makai the Under 12 team take on Angle Vale on Friday each took a wicket.

Under 16

The Under 16s round five clash against Angle Vale saw Two Wells coming off a bye and playing their only one-day game for the year.

Two Wells bowled first and started strong with Alex Daly taking the first of his three wickets with his first ball.

There were some tough chances that were just wide but we managed to bowl them out for 57.

Alex had figures of 3/17, with Matt, Jack, Jackson and Harry each taking a wicket.

Sam and Harry got us off to a flying start with the bat.

Sam retired on 51 in the fifth over.

Harry and Matt continued the run blitz before Harry fell for 34.

Alex didn’t hang around long and Matt continued, retiring on 50.

Jackson worked hard and finished on 44 not out and Jacob on 18 no.

Our final score after 20 overs was two for 224.

A great way to finish the year and hopefully we can maintain the form in the new year.

A Grade

Eyre Royals were put in to bat and were bowled out for 133.

There was some tight bowling and fielding, with Daryl Weigl taking 3/40, Daryl Hubber 2/18, Cooper Henwood 2/19, and Luke Harris and Blake Hamilton a wicket each. Devon Hardiman also took two catches.

Two Wells passed Eyre’s score in 30.3 overs.

Luke Harris 87 not out, Adam Mitchell 21, and Shayne Walker 19 not out.

B Grade Two Wells’ B Grade side also played Eyre Park away.

Eyre Royals batted first and made 8/152.

There was some superb bowling by the Two Wells boys which saw Matt Camplin take 5/29.

Harrison Devlin, backing up from playing in the morning, took 2/25.

Two Wells passed Eyre’s score in 28.3 overs.

Samuel Harnas and Harrison Devlin started off in fine form with Harry falling for 39.

In came Pat Binyon to continue the run chase.

Samuel Harnas finished on 58 not out, including eight boundaries and a six, and Pat 52 not out with six boundaries and two sixes.

The A grade took on Eyre Royals at home.

Logan Clifton scored 50 not out against Para Vista.

New players recruited to softball club SALLY GREEN

Local Lads in SAPSASA Cricket Playing SAPSASA cricket for Playford in November were Trinity College Gawler River schoolmates Jake Bellas, formerly of Lewiston, Ethan Edwards from Lewiston and Logan Clifton from Two Wells. While the team was not top of their pool the lads had a great week honing their cricket skills and playing on varied surfaces.

THIS season the Two Wells T-Birds Softball Club has two teeball teams, consisting of a Division 2 and a Division 1.

The club has managed to recruit a few new players and we have been able to fill a second senior team, which is great.

So far both senior teams have been playing very well with a handful of wins.

The premiership team from last season has also picked up a couple of new players and they are fitting in quite nicely.

The club trains Thursday evenings at Two Wells oval, with teeballers at 5pm and seniors training at 6pm.

The season takes a break over the Christmas holidays and will return to play in the new year on January 8.

The club has nine players from Two Wells that will be representing the Gawler Association at the Senior State Championship games in January 2022 at West Beach.

Two Wells tennis competitions remain active STACEY GAMEAU IT'S been an exciting few weeks at tennis for Two Wells District Tennis Club.

We have had all sorts of weather from heat to rain (so much that we had to cancel a couple of Tuesday night Hot Shots and Saints and Sinners social tennis sessions). But it's also been cold enough to wear jackets on Saturday mornings.

The Hot Shots and Saints and Sinners held a make-up session the last Tuesday before the Christmas break. All the Hot Shots kids have improved so much, guided by coach Dale, and we are proud of them all.

The camaraderie between all the kids is great to see.

It's lovely to see all the high fives and hugs shared between teammates, having fun togeth-

er and building friendships.

The Saturday teams seem to play even better together in their bright red sponsored team tops.

At this point in the Orange Ball competition the Two Wells Bartys are on top, Two Wells Tanks fourth and the Two Wells Lightning are fifth.

In the Green Ball competition the Two Wells Twizzlers are second with the Two Wells Pretzels third and the Two Wells Demons sixth. Hopefully we are on track to watch our Two Wells junior teams in some exciting finals matches early next year.

The senior team has been performing at a high level all season.

They had a little form slump recently but hopefully they can bring back their winning

form in their last match for 2021 season before breaking for the holidays.

This team should also hopefully be playing finals early next year. Keep up the hitting practice in the holidays.

The Saints and Sinners social tennis has seen plenty of laughs, rallies, smashes and a couple of cold ones.

It’s exciting to see some of the partnerships rocking their different outfits each week; it definitely adds to the atmosphere.

The dance competition also has a stand out high achiever... who you may run into at the chemist.

The Saints and Sinners winners will be crowned soon, so keep an eye out in the next Echo to learn who took home the title.

Rigney’s footy feats recognised Dimasi eyes state cricket selection VIRGINIA Football Club’s Under 17 premiership coach Graham Rigney has narrowly missed out on the title for South Australian Football League’s Junior Coach of the Year accolade, instead receiving a merit award for his efforts last month.

Rams president Chris Ewen said the club had invested a lot of time into its junior program and was thrilled for Graham being nominated for the awards.

“We had a massive hole in our 17s and he has worked very hard, and obviously got the reward,” Chris stated.

“He’s got a real massive heart and a massive footy brain, and puts a lot of time into his footy.

“We are very proud of his efforts.”

Rigney was the club’s U17 premiership coach this season and has been in the role for the past three years.

He won the coach of the year accolade for the Adelaide Plains Football League Graham Rigney (centre) with his SA Junior Coach of the Year merit for season 2021.

• From back page During the off-season Ryan was part of the Craig Haines Cricket Academy, training once a week in their specialised batting area for a 10-week block.

In the October school holidays he was selected to play in a statewide carnival where SA’s top 35 promising Under 17 cricketers featured.

While his performance early in the carnival did not go as planned, later in the week Ryan knocked a solid 60 and an impressive 110 in the last game of the carnival, which led him to be selected for the Under 17 preliminary state squad.

He has commenced training twice a week at either Adelaide Oval or Park 25, and is taking part in various trial games

in a bid for final state selection.

“We are waiting to find out if Ryan makes the final 14 SACA Under 17 team who will head to Bendigo in January 2022,” Michelle explained.

This month Ryan made his grade 1 debut for Northern Districts Cricket Club, playing a 20/20 match against Kensington, which saw him bat against some of SA’s best bowlers who also play for the Redbacks.

“It was a special moment for him but he wasn’t too phased,” Michelle said.

“Special mention goes to Ryan’s grandparents Ray and Lorraine Prior, who have helped with the running around; words aren’t enough for all the love and support we’ve been shown helping Ryan reach his cricketing goals.”

Dress-ups celebrate club’s yearly break up ALIX BELL TWO Wells Equestrian and Pony Club embraced the holiday spirit at the final rally of the year on Sunday, December 5 with a dress up themed break up.

This rally was one of the most attended rallies of the year and even attracted members from Gawler River Pony Club and Barossa Valley Pony Club.

The only requirement to enter was that all riders, parents and friends must get involved and dress up and that they

did, with Christmas themed costumes to dragons, knights and superheroes.

The day consisted of a series of mounted and unmounted games such as the hokey pokey and musical poles (adapted musical mats), a rider's challenge and obstacle course, and a quick water fight before lunch.

Club members were awarded with various certificates and awards that were completed at the patch day and No Stirrup November challenge.

Two members achieved their D certificate, three members achieved their D Star

certificate and four members achieved their C Certificate which were all assessed

by Rebecca Puro.

Another four members also achieved their lunging patch, assessed by Alix Bell.

A total of 18 members rode their horse with no stirrups, cantering or trotting for 15 minutes to achieve the gold no stirrup challenge award.

Congratulations everyone on another successful year for Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club.

Members reflect on busy year SAM DRAGON THIS year Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club has seen an increase in attendance at our events and held many ‘Come and Try’ days.

As an added perk for our members, the club has held regular ‘open arena’ sessions which have been well received.

In October we held our annual club camp at Mount Crawford.

Twenty-two people attended and had an amazing time with three trail rides organised over the weekend and a wonderful shared dinner held around the campfire.

In November the club held a ‘Come and Try Jumping’ clinic with Lucy Williams.

All attendees loved their one-hour lessons and learnt so much from the amazing Lucy.

Our final event for the year was held on November 28 and included our annual general meeting, and Christmas party.

The event was a way to thank club members for their support throughout the year with a fun event and free lunch.

We had 39 people attending and there was a lot of fun and laughs.

The club has a great range of events lined up for the year ahead including a horsemanship day, jolly joker ride, and

Western dressage session.

There will also be more members only open arena sessions, so keep an eye out on our Facebook page and website for the full calendar of events.

Dimasi eyes state cricket selection BEC O’BRIEN RYAN Dimasi - remember this name.

The Two Wells teenager is moving up in the cricket world; hoping for state selection in the Under 17 team to travel to Bendigo next month.

The promising 16-year-old recently made his grade 1 debut for Northern Districts Cricket Club, the Jets, and is a mad cricket fan.

He spends hours each week training and playing at various venues across the wider city of Adelaide and around the Barossa Valley, with his parents Michelle and Michael clocking up the kilometres as they help Ryan chase his dreams of one day wearing the baggy green.

Ryan started Milo Cricket at the age of four and first took to the field at age six.

At the time Two Wells Cricket Club did not have any competitive junior teams which meant Ryan had to travel to play the game he loved.

For the past three seasons he has played on turf

on Friday nights in the Under 17’s competition for Nuriootpa Cricket Club in the Barossa and Light league.

“Cricket has always been Ryan’s passion,” proud mum, Michelle Dimasi said.

“Even at a young age he would prefer to watch test cricket than kids t.v. shows.

“He’s excited that Two Wells has now managed to get cricket going again in the junior ages, and when he has time he pops down to training to help the younger kids and watches most Friday night under 12 games.”

Following an impressive 92 not out stint for Barossa in the Country Cup carnival semi final at the beginning of the year, Dimasi, made his senior debut for Jets not long after.

Ryan impressed Jets’ selectors, making 51 (not out) and a further 34 (not out) in his first senior Grade 3 match.

By the time this year’s season started he was elevated to opening batsman in the Grade 2 team for the summer commencing 2021/2022. n Continued page 21
