Fechners a feature of Two Wells Christmas Street Parade In the Fechner household things can get pretty loud.

And it’s not just the sounds of four happy kids making all the noise.

For this musically minded family of Two Wells, playing an instrument is almost a given, with five of the six family members picking up an instrument of some sort.

And they’re not just any run-ofthe-mill instruments either.

Music is definitely a passion for the Fechners, with dad Peter who has been a member of the Pt Adelaide City Band (PACB) for about 30 years - the conductor and bandmaster.

He also plays the cornet.

Mum Jaclyn plays the tuba and has been a member of the PACB for more than 15 years.

Following in their parents’ footsteps are 11-year-old Ethan and eight-year-old Elyse, who play the euphonium (I had to look that one up!) and the cornet, respectively.

Five-year-old brother Eddison is learning the baritone and all the kids dabble with the piano.

The littlest Fechner, Eli, gets to enjoy it all.

At St Columba College, you can now enrol your child for Year 7 in 2019 and beyond as the first year of Middle School.

You might have seen this wonderful family as they marched along with the PACB as part of the Two Wells Christmas Street Parade on Friday December 15.

Peter’s dad Leo, also plays with the PACB as does his brother David and niece Kayla.

“It’s definitely a family thing,” Peter said.

“It’s about the only thing that we get to do during the week together.”

Elyse is the youngest member

of the PACB while Ethan has a few more public shows under his belt.

Early next year Ethan is heading interstate as part of Trinity College’s Senior Band, and he’s only just going into Year 6!

He will be one of the youngest members of this band, with the majority of his peers in Year 10 or higher.

Congratulations Ethan! How lucky you all are to share the gift of music.

Santa success at Two Wells’ Parade This year’s Two Wells Christmas Street Parade was another great success, with a range of floats, stalls and three marching bands creating an atmosphere of fun and celebration.

The December 15 event kicked off from 4pm when the main street, from Wells Road to Drew Street, was closed to traffic.

Two Wells Regional Action Team president, Caroline Scutcheon, says the popular event attracted hundreds of local residents as well as many visitors and this year the parade’s special guest was MLC John Dawkins.

Mr Dawkins is a life member at the Two Wells football club and is a strong advocate for mental health and suicide prevention.

Ms Scutcheon said the annual parade of floats by local community and sporting groups, as well as emergency services, was fun, and the children loved the chance to pick up a lolly or two from members of the parade as they passed.

“We had a range of floats, including CFS trucks, vintage cars, clowns, equestrian riders and small animals taking part,” she said.

“Local businesses were encouraged to enter floats as well, and we judged the best business float and best community float, as well as the best decorated business in the main street and the best Christmas wreath in the craft competition.”

This year parade-goers had the chance to listen to three marching bands in the form of

the Port Adelaide City Band, Mitcham City Brass Band, and the City of Elizabeth Pipe Band.

“This event has been held for the past 30 years,” Ms Scutcheon said.

“It started off simple, but has grown over the years.

“This is the biggest social event for Two Wells for the year, and a great way for our local and wider community to get together to celebrate the festive season.”

Santa arrived on a float decorated by the Two Wells Scouts and was available for photos in the Old Council Chambers after the parade.

Wearing the crown this year for the title of parade Prince and Princess was local residents Zac Cleaver and Alexis Buckley.

“There has been a lot of hard work done by the organising team to get everything together,” Ms Scutcheon said.

“We’re following on from the work that has been done previously by former president Bev Smith-Trim.

“There were 30-odd stalls with everything from wooden crafts, baby goods, and face painting to local sporting clubs like the softball club, scouts, and children’s center.

“There was also air brush tattoos, a photo booth and a CFS display on the oval.”

Ms Scutcheon said the CFS display was a welcome addition to the festivities and highlighted some of the skills recruits use in an emergency situation.

Deck the halls

Christmas lights helping to spread the festive spirit The Christmas tradition of displaying Christmas lights is still alive, despite the enormous rising costs of electricity.

Families who are able to provide a pleasant display to the community in which they live are very much appreciated, as the smiles that light the faces of children who visit are as bright as the colourful, flashing lights.

There are a handful of families in Angle Vale who have continued their tradition of Christmas lights for a number of years.

Giving their Heart and Soul at Two Wells Uniting Church Two Wells Uniting Church has opened its doors to host a free weekly market.

Charity, Heart and Soul, has been setting up a market-style food giveaway service from the venue on Friday mornings for the past month and wants to let residents in the area know about it.

Heart and Soul founder and president Emma Rahim, says the charity has been running since early 2015 and used to be located in Mallala.

However, when a permanent venue became difficult to lock down, the group decided to move to Two Wells.

“This is a marketstyle food give-away service,” Ms Rahim said.

“As opposed to handing out hampers, we’ve recognised that sometimes what’s in the hampers people don’t eat, so we thought how can we make that process easier, better and more appropriate.

“It’s as though you’d go into a market, so you’d have your pick of the fruit and vegetables and bread that’s available.”

Volunteers of the charity spend many hours picking up food from locations across the city and work in partnership with Food-

Bec O’Brien reports: bank and Secondbite, as well as Baker’s Delight, Coles, Costco and Audi to gather unwanted food and pantry items or products at highly discounted prices.

These are then taken to locations including Hackham West, Queenstown, Elizabeth and now Two Wells, where they are sorted, packaged and displayed.

Ms Rahim says anyone who is struggling is welcome to come and take what they need.

“A lot of the feedback we’ve been getting is that once they’ve paid their bills there’s nothing left for food,” she explained.

“There’s a lot of judgment out there. We have no judgment. You wouldn’t be there if you didn’t have a need for it.

“People might be asset rich but cash poor (and) we try not to discriminate.

“If you need food we’re going to feed you.”

Ms Rahim says many of the volunteers once accessed the service themselves.

“Every single one of our volunteers that is their story,” she said.

“They came to us in need and once they got

back on their feet, they wanted to repay something, so they offered to volunteer.”

As well as an astonishing range of fruit and vegetables, which is often dictated by what is in season, the market has a large range of breads and bakery items available.

There is also a popular $1 table, where pantry items, school snacks and personal products are available for just a gold coin.

“After you’ve finished paying all your bills you just don’t have money for these kinds of things,” Ms Rahim said.

“We decided to take it one step further and provide all those treats, like a block of chocolate, that people just can’t afford.”

Ms Rahim said H&S was pleased to be able to offer frozen and refrigerated items, like ice-cream, yoghurt and milk, at Two Wells from next year, having now secured an indoor venue with access to a fridge and freezer.

The Heart and Soul market is held at the Two Wells Uniting Church every Friday from 11am.

This Friday, December 15, will be the last market for the year, with the service continuing from January 12, 2018.

The Future Tourism Challenge now open The Future Tourism Challenge was launched in November and applications are now open.

The Future Tourism Challenge provides an opportunity for members of the public, businesses, entrepreneurs and start-ups in South Australia to fund ideas that will unlock the nature-based tourism of the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary.

By encouraging the development and implementation of projects designed to enhance the visitor experience, the Challenge aims to expose more people to the diverse

landscape and vibrant birdlife that makes the sanctuary unique.

Applications for funding will close on Monday 15 January 2018.

An expert panel of judges will select a number of finalists and then provide them with an opportunity to road test their tourism idea during March 2018 in a workshop provided by the Australian Centre for Innovation (TACSI).

The finalists will then present their final ideas to the panel and winners will be announced in April 2018.

Virginia PS finds its voice Voice projection, teamwork, spatial awareness and use of props are all new skills one group of students at Virginia Primary School will have in spades after being part of a five-week drama program this term.

Run by True North Youth Theatre Ensemble, about 25 Year 3 students took part in the program, which was funded by AngliCare SA. VPS upper primary teacher, Sue Graham, said the workshops had really brought the students out of their shells and it was positive to see such growth in their confidence after a relatively short time.

“The workshops have been about getting them to work together and focus and just use their creativity without being inhibited,” Ms Graham said.

“There’s a lot of partner work

Bec O’Brien reports: and use of props (and) I really like that this builds on the arts we have at the school like music, choir and visual arts.

“Plus the children’s confidence is really growing.

“They all join in.”

The True North Youth Theatre Ensemble is an initiative led by award winning theatre-maker, Alirio Zavarce, who is creating new opportunities for young people in the north of Adelaide to train, learn performance skills, play and perform.

Alirio told the students theatre was a lot about creation.

“One of the things when you do theatre is to create things together,” he explained.

“If you can be in a room together

and make something, to make a piece of art, then there is hope in the world.”

Alirio said there were a lot of schools in the state that did not have strong art programs and the ensemble was one way of bringing the world of theatre to young students.

With accompanying music of various tempos and moods, the 50-minute workshops combine movement with expression, interpretation and props.

Participating at VPS was student Leehi, who said the workshops had been really fun.

“It’s awesome,” added fellow student Zoe. “We can learn new things and we can feel free to do what we want with the music.”

Classmate, Jordon, said the experience was getting the students to work as a team a lot.

Fun in the Sun returns After a successful “Fun in the Sun” school holiday excursion earlier this year, the popular event will be back again in 2018.

Adelaide Plains Council is once again presenting this school holiday activity, with Middle Beach the scheduled venue for Thursday 18 January 2018.

“After this year’s successful trip to Thompson Beach, staff have been busy planning for our next excursion,”Two Wells Public Library library and community services coordinator, Anne Sawtell said.

The trip is for primary school aged children, who need to be accompanied by a parent/carer, with everyone boarding a bus bright and

early at 8am outside the Two Wells Public Library.“A variety of fun activities will be on offer to help explore our coast including fishing, crabbing and bird watching,” Anne said.

“Adelaide Plains Council’s beaches are world famous for their birds and council is very keen to engage its young people to ensure the future viability of our coastal and marine areas.”

APC wishes to acknowledge the support from the Friends of the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary (FAIBS), who were successful in obtaining funding through a Natural Resources Management (NRM) community grant to help run the day.

Birdlife Australia, Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges, and the Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources also support the event.

It is essential to book your free seats, which are strictly limited (and includes morning tea and lunch) at the Two Wels Public Library during opening hours on 8520 2100 or email library@apc.sa.gov.au.

All participants need to bring their own hats and wear sun-smart clothes.

If the Country Fire Service advises a total fire ban is declared for Thursday 18 January 2018, then parents will be contacted the afternoon beforehand that the excursion will

be cancelled.

In other library news, if you’re looking for something to keep the kids busy these school holidays why not sign them up for the annual Summer Reading Club?

Kids can pick up a pack from the library right now and join in the fun challenge of reading at least 10 books during the summer break.

There are prizes to be won as part of the national competition, which is for preschoolers, primary school and high school students.

On a more local level, all participants are invited to a celebration afternoon tea at the end of the holidays where they will be presented with a book and certificate.

John Dawkins MLC January update In last month’s column I reported that my Family Relationships (Surrogacy) Amendment Bill passed the Upper House on 1 November. Unfortunately, the Labor Government was not committed to seeing the Bill pass the House of Assembly as they were preoccupied with removing the fairness clause from the South Australian Constitution on the last day of sitting for 2017.

Mothers and surrogates have been waiting long enough for this legislation to be enhanced. Despite the sponsoring of the bill by the AttorneyGeneral, elements of the Labor Party succeeded in ensuring it lapsed in the early hours of 1 December.

Cr Karen McColl and I were privileged to spend time with the passionate community of the Willo Men’s Shed at their 10th Birthday celebrations in Willaston recently.

Thanks to those who attended Anzac and Remembrance Day Services.

Two special services to remember those brave soldiers who gave their lives in the recent Middle East conflict and also to remember those dogs who have given their lives in service.

New Korunye water main Almost 750 metres of water main along Port Wakefield Highway will be replaced to reduce the impact of water main breaks on customers and road users in the Korunye area.

The upgrade, between Hart and Richardson Road, is part of an ongoing program that will see $137 million invested to replace around 375 kilometres of water mains across South Australia between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said this section of pipe was prioritised for replacement after breaks in the past 12 months.

“The new pipes will be made of

PVC and PE, which are flexible and more resistant to the movement caused by the area’s reactive soils than existing, rigid cast iron and fibro -cement pipes,” Mr Gobbie said. ”Work to install the new water mains is typically taking place between 9am and 4pm from Monday to Friday and is anticipated to be completed by late January.”

“In this instance, the new pipe will be laid using a combination of traditional trenching techniques and directional drilling to reduce the impact on those travelling along the nearby Port Wakefield Highway.

“Please be alert to changed traffic conditions in the area.”

NZ Red Knot caught at Thompsons Beach Jennifer Hiscock reports: A group of dedicated Friends of Shorebirds SE/Victorian Wader Study Group members and South Australian volunteers, sat quietly behind the small sand dune at Thompsons Beach on November 22 hoping to sight and catch small Red Knot birds.

The net was set on the beach, and they were waiting for the tide to come in.

The tide brings wader birds that feed along the edge of the water, to the high tide area.

These birds have flown to South Australia from the arctic in the Northern hemisphere, arriving in October.

They stay along the coast until April the next year when they fly some 13,000 km to return to the arctic, to breed.

These extensive mud flats along the Samphire coast from Port Prime to Bald Hill, are where locals go to catch crabs.

The birds are also there over summer, spread along the shoreline, following the daily incoming and outgoing tides.

They stay to feed to get fatter for the long flight north.

At 7pm on Wednesday November 22 the net was fired.

It went over the birds that were in front of it at the time.

What had been caught this time?

Some 20 birds were caught. These were the red knot species, which are about the size of a spotted dove.

The Red Knots were the target for this expedition, which is supported by the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management for 2017.

This was very exciting, as only a single red knot had been caught and banded here previously.

Each bird caught has a leg ring attached as a unique identifier, and two flag bands placed on the other leg, that indicate the year and location caught.

Among the 20, was a bird with a white band.

This was most exciting as it indicated that the bird had come from New Zealand.

Usually, red knot birds from Australia and New Zealand fly north along separate routes.

This bird was banded in 2008 in New

Zealand and had been seen up until 2011. And here it is now, with a flock of hundreds of other red knot, along the Gulf St Vincent coastline.

The South Australian birds generally migrate north to the arctic via Asia.

The bands on the birds allow them to be identified at any location where they feed as they fly north.

All of Days’ eggs in one basket Have you ever wondered how so many eggs, of various brands and sizes, just keep appearing on the supermarket shelves?

Well, it’s not by magic, but by a lot of hard work, persistence and risk-taking by chook owners, who put their heads on the chopping block to continually and consistently provide a product in high demand for our everincreasing population.

Days Eggs at Lower Light has been operating for 28 years, with current managing director, Dion Andary and his wife Anne, starting their business back in 1989 just selling cartons of eggs from the back of a little $200 van.

“Our kids were little and we worked non-stop 12-15 hours a day, seven days a week, working in other jobs

Speaking of the kids, that’s how the name DAYS Eggs came about – Dion, Anne, Yasmine and Sarah!

The business grew, and when the egg industry was deregulated in 1992, Dion saw an opportunity to, over time, buy 14 egg Adelaide distributions, and even though their business was based at Lower Light, hatched the plan to start up Days Adelaide Egg Supplies.

“People were getting out of the egg business, but we were just getting into it, so kept the Adelaide name to attract that commercial side of the industry.”

However, in 2005, things went egg-shaped when the local market was flooded by interstate eggs, resulting in an egg war.

“Supermarkets went looking to SA suppliers, but the interstaters were pushing their way in, however during the surplus saga, Drakes Foodland kept us afloat and has continued being loyal supporters of us and our product,” Dion said.

Of great concern now, is yet another influx of interstate eggs is hitting some South Australian supermarkets.

To ensure sustainability of the SA egg industry into the future, and guarantee the high quality product we have come to expect, shoppers should ensure they buy local eggs by choosing eggs stamped SA#.

In 2006, the business was corporatised to enable recapitalisation and expansion, allowing Dion and Anne to recapitalise and draw up their 15-year plan.

“We achieved that plan in just two years, and being in it for the long haul, knew the future was to focus on quality, technology and volume.”

“Technology is the future for true hen welfare outcomes - you don’t see farmers out in the paddock milking 400 cows with a bucket and milking stool- the world’s population is growing and we need to keep up.”

The business soon outgrew the original purposebuilt shed so more land was acquired and more sheds built as part of its expansion.

Eight years ago, a new egg sorting machine was installed, sorting 60,000 eggs an hour – hard to imagine, isn’t it?

But that’s not all!

A new 3000m2 factory has been built recently to house a new latest model state-of-theart machine from Holland, the first of this model in Australia.

The welfare of the chickens is paramount, with automated technology ensuring their feed, water, temperature and ventilation is consistent.

Days Eggs has kept growing, and now has eight sites around the state, including two rearing sites where chickens are raised until 16 weeks of age when they are moved

to the egg farms.

Since its inception, the business has grown from 400 to 500,000 chooks, to 100 labels and 350 outlets, and staff wise, from just Anne and Dion, to now employing 90 staff across the eight sites.

All yolks aside, the old adage of ‘Most people don’t see opportunity as it’s often dressed in work clothes’ doesn’t apply here, as Dion and Anne have grabbed and run with every possible opportunity.

Fund My Neighbourhood success The Two Wells Craft Shop has been successful in its bid to gain funding through the state government’s $40 million Fund My Neighbourhood program.

The group will receive $20,000 to create a unique, multi-purpose community garden at the rear of the property on Old Port Wakefield Road.

The Fund My Neighbourhood initiative sought community-based projects to improve local neighbourhoods with residents across the state encouraged to vote on the projects they wanted to see in their district.

One-off grants of between $10,000 and $150,000 were available for ideas as diverse as small local infrastructure upgrades, through to initiatives that strengthen neighbourhood cohesion.

TWCS manager, Judi Frost, says their project “Community Growing Green Space”, fits in the environment and sustainability category and once completed, will provide a lovely meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

“This will be an extra space for tourists and locals to sit and relax,” she said.

community groups like Scouts, the local school, gardening clubs as well as families, who might like to get involved.”

The space at the rear of the craft shop incorporates the town’s old jail cells, which the group hopes to turn into a help-yourself coffee and cake facility.

There will be paved paths, boulders and natural materials, native water-wise plants, shady evergreen trees as well as seating and tables and a vegetable patch.

Volunteers at the Two Wells Craft Shop would like to thank the efforts of all local residents who voted and in particular, Marie Tapscott, who devoted many hours to promoting the cause.

Work on the garden is expected to begin in April next year.

Christmas concert cheer Two Wells Community Children’s Centre (TWCCC) held its annual Christmas celebration on Friday December 9.

Despite the threat of a summer thunderstorm, the popular event went ahead as planned, with families enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.

Children who access the centre loved the face painting, jumping castle and disco, and of course the concert, which was this year held in the gym of the neighbouring Two Wells Primary School.

After the sausages had been eaten and the cake stall had all but been sold out, it was time for the

main event – the children sharing some of their favourite songs.

As parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and friends gathered round, those little people, many soon to start their schooling journey, capped off a lovely evening with sweet, pure voices.

Dakota’s quest to be national face of rodeo Bronwyn Sharpe, Edmund Pegge, and Anne Sawtell.

An actor’s life recounted Natalie Centenera reports: The Two Wells Library held its last author event for 2017 on Friday December 8 at the Two Wells Bowling Club, hosting Australian actor Edmund Pegge, who was in town to promote his autobiography, ‘Forever Horatio, An Actor’s Life.’

With a short performance of Shakespeare to begin his talk, Edmund was quick to point out that his book was “not a Jimmy Barnes story”.

“I do not come from a poverty background, I come from a colonial, middle class background, and I’m proud of it,” he said.

“I’m well educated and so on, you don’t often get books about that.”

Edmund described his newly published book as a straight forward and very nice read, a sentiment that he says is echoed by Dame Judi Dench, his friend since 1966.

Horatio was the supporting character of Hamlet, and it turned out that Edmund almost always landed the supporting role, never the lead, both in the play Hamlet and other projects.

Although he concedes that he has led a very happy and fulfilled life, despite never having made ‘the big time’.

“I maximised my potential,” he explained, the reason as to why he never married or had children, a factor in life that he would change if he were to do it all over again.

Having spent his childhood years in Old Windsor, 50 miles from London, his family immigrated to South Australia and he completed his studies at St Peters in Adelaide.

Edmund said he has rich memories from his time in England, and they are full of detail, which he has translated into the written word in his book.

He has many an interesting anecdote, such as his father having arrested Gandhi, his mother re-

ceiving elocution lessons from Lionel Logue, famous for treating King George VI’s chronic stammer, and Edmund himself taking Vivian Leigh, the actress who played Scarlett O’Hara, on a date.

“Scarlett O’Hara was in my car,” he said with a cheeky glow.

“She was just enchanting, a goddess.”

Edmund wasn’t always an actor, he worked in the cement section at Elder Smith’s in Adelaide when first leaving school, although he quickly realised the commercial world wasn’t for him.

He spent two years at the prestigious NIDA, and landed a position in the Young Elizabethan Players, touring the country performing Shakespeare.

“That was a way to learn your craft” he stated, referring to the tours as arduous work.

He then began to star in TV and radio roles, before sailing to England, “to extend his craft”.

After returning to South Australia Edmund embarked on delivering educational programs, including poetry and creative writing, to schools from 1997 to 2009.

“We did an awful lot of good,” he says, referring to the time spent delivering the programs.

“In the words of Othello, ‘I do believe I did a service to the State’.”

He also divulged that he has been killed many times, artistically that is.

“The last time I was killed was down the road whilst filming Wolf Creek,” he said.

“A violent show, really, not my cup of tea,” he confessed.

And on that deathly note, Edmund wrapped up his interesting talk, taking questions from the delighted audience who promptly lined up to purchase a copy of his autobiography and have it personally signed, before enjoying a light lunch.

Lewiston barrel racer Dakota Michaelis is hoping to become the next Miss Rodeo Australia.

It’s been a while since anyone from South Australia has claimed the title, and Dakota is set to shine.

The 20-year-old competes throughout the year at rodeo events across the country and this year was named the South Australian Rookie Barrel Racing Champion.

As well as promoting the sport of barrel racing and the wider rodeo life in general, Dakota is raising funds for the Prospect-based Epilepsy Centre.

“I was teaching a young girl who suffers from this condition to ride and just thought it was a wonderful group to support,” Dakota said.

“I like that I’m helping to raise awareness of epilepsy as well as promote the sport I have lived and breathed since I was five years old.”

Dakota’s first rodeo experience was at the Peterborough rodeo when she was five.

It’s fitting then that this year, 15 years down the track, she took out the title of Miss Peterborough, in the process giving her a shot at the national crown.

The Miss Rodeo Australia competition is serious business, with contestants having to demonstrate horsemanship, public speaking skills and knowledge of the sport and its associated industry.

There’s also a lengthy faceto-face interview she will have to complete in front of a panel of judges in Warwick, Queensland, in January next year.

“If I win, this will give me the opportunity to further my career internationally,” Dakota said.

The title-holder will receive

$15,000 worth of travel and prizes, including an overseas trip to Canada to participate in the world renowned Calvary Stampede.

“I’ll get to meet so many people, it would be the trip of a lifetime,” Dakota enthused.

Dakota is raising funds

for her tilt at the Miss Rodeo Australia title in a variety of ways, including raffle tickets, selling t-shirts and possibly a movie-night.

Response to council’s ‘journey’ Re: “OUR JOURNEY – TWO YEARS ON”, a report written by Adelaide Plains Council CEO, James Miller, and published on November 20, 2017.

The above report made interesting reading in APC Council minutes and I congratulate APC on some of its achievements.

However, in the interests of “transparency” (that word again) perhaps the rest of the story should be exposed.

Failures “Our Journey – Two Years On” 1. CWMS a) Incompetence of middle management in the extreme to initially put in place the CWMS that was not fit for purpose. b) Not three houses requiring effluent pumps as originally stated by council - the figure is 30 and growing. c) Untruths told to councillors regarding engineer inspections of all homes in Mallala prior to construction to ascertain septic levels and available fall.

The chamber told “all but six homes.”

Random selection of 55 homes proved no inspection was carried out at that time.

2. Organisational rebranding

– council name change a) First suggested to council by members of Adelaide Plains Ratepayers and Residents Association. Not an initiative of Adelaide Plains Council.

3. Effluent Flooding of Mr Don MacKenzie’s home from CWMS failure. a) Complaints to council

by Mr MacKenzie virtually overlooked and ignored after the initial flooding. b) Would not have achieved the final outcome if not for the intervention of APRRA. c) Disgraceful that six months elapsed before completion of remediation.

4. Middle management making decisions without councillors knowledge. a) Middle management knee-jerk reaction to closing the camping facilities at Port Parham and Mallala without informing elected members, created major loss of earnings for businesses in Parham, Dublin and Mallala and creating a void in tourism to this district.

5. GRFMA Ongoing frustration partially caused by the CEO’s failure to carry out the initial wishes of elected members and del-

egates to GRFMA to notify the GRFMA board of APC’s desire to withdraw, allowing months to pass before finally carrying out the elected members instructions, potentially putting APC at financial risk.

6. Two Wells Transfer Station – Carslake Road asbestos debacle. a) Thirteen days between discovery of asbestos at Two Wells transfer station and notification of the CEO. b) From council’s minutes November 20, 2017, it is obvious no-one will be held responsible within council for this failing. c) How could this asbestos contamination occur if staff (and highly paid managers) have been properly trained and understand their respective role within APC? d) $150,000+ debt incurred

by APC requiring an adjustment to a quarterly budget review. e) APC hopes to recoup some costs from insurance companies – since when have you been able to insure against incompetency?

7. Introduction of Governance Advisory Panel. a) The CEO’s report lauds the introduction of the GAP –

(Kangaroo Court) b) A total waste of ratepayer’s funds seem to be accessed by thin skinned, self promoting factions within APC for little or no community benefit. c) There is no fair judgement and no right to representation = (Kangaroo Court). d) $12,500 cost to council on one occasion with no significant outcome. e) Numerous biased and one-sided solicitor’s letters forwarded at the behest of selfpromoting GAP members, adding to the waste of ratepayer’s funds.

And so it goes on…

If the executive management and staff mentioned in the CEO’s report, “Journey Two Years On”, had been as successful as they would like to think, and there was no list of failures as above, the ratepayers would be only too pleased to congratulate them, but I fear that is not the case.

Failures and bad decisions continue.

A beautiful summer evening was the perfect backdrop for Two Wells Primary School’s annual End of Year Carols on Tuesday December 5.

With families and friends gathering on the oval and enjoying the pre-show sausage sizzle, the stage was set for the classes of 2017 to show their creativity, musicality and style.

Presenting a range of classic Christmas carols, including Jingle Bells, It’s Christmas Time and Feliz Navidad, the classes also surprised with All I want for Christmas & Nuttin’ for Christmas; a remix of Snoop Dogg’s Winter Wonderland and Santa’s Gonna Come on a Surfboard.

The whole-school finale at the end was a hit with.

Santa Clause and Mrs Clause were sighted at TWPS’s recent Christmas Concert. They’re also known here as Michael and Brianna Barber.

Two Wells Primary Year 7 Graduation Bec O’Brien reports: Looking far older than their 12 or 13 years of age, the 2017 Year 7 students at Two Wells Primary School graduated with style on Wednesday December 13.

Dressed to impress the young students celebrated the end of their primary schooling years with a short, official presentation at the school, which was followed by a shared tea, dancing and fun photo booth.

While all of the students went home winners after their final year at TWPS, a few stood out, including Declan, who won the Dean Anderson Student of the Year Award; Samuel, who won the Noel Oakley Sports Award; Ella, who was awarded the Carolyn Hart Academic Award, and Riley, who won the Neville Sharpe Community Service Award.

Congratulations to all award winners and best of luck to everyone for high school next year.

Rollicking rock ‘n’ roll rendezvous Virgara Winery at Angle Vale was a vibrant meeting place for rock and rollers from all over Adelaide on Sunday November 26.

The annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Christmas picnic, held by the Legends Rock and Roll Community Club, donated the gold coin entry fee to the Make a Wish Foundation.

With over 1200 people attending, the largest crowd at the annual event so far, enjoying the live music and kicking up their heels on the dancefloor, and with many attendees in vintage clothing, it was like stepping back in time.

Busy year for Wells Girls CWA

MOVIE REVIEW: Beautifully moving Anna White of Two Wells, is a primary teacher at St Brigid’s Catholic School at Evanston.

Here is her review of the movie ‘Wonder’ for Echo readers.

Based on the New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, Auggie, a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the very first time.

As an end-of-year activity, several staff members thought this would be a good, educational and motivational experience for the students.

And they were absolutely right!

Auggie was born with TCS (Treacher Collins Syndrome)- who’d ever heard of that?

Not me for sure and definitely not any of the children in my Year 2/3 class.

The story relates to how ordinary or normal, yet difficult, it was for any child on the first day at school– but Auggie was no ordinary kid.

Intelligent, funny, and shy, with an outwardly obvious ‘disadvantage’.

When you’re different people always notice and comment, don’t they?

Unfortunately these comments are not always positive.

How does one deal with them? What to do?

How to react? How does that affect someone on the inside? What choices does one make as a consequence?

This little child with TCS was born with facial differences that, up until now, had prevented him

from going to a mainstream school.

Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade class.

He tries desperately to fit in, but as his sister Via reminds him, he should not try to fit in, if he was born to stand out.

What great advice for all! Hope my children heard that one – I will certainly reinforce that to them.

Auggie eventually made friends, only with much difficulty, after being treated like a freak and being severely bullied.

He also became just as much the hero as he inspired those around him to make wiser choices and to be truer to their inner selves, honest, kind and caring.

The English teacher, Mr Browne, had a precept, “When given the choice between being right or being kind, always choose kind,” challenging probably, but none-the-less great words to live by.

‘Wonder’ is not just about how a bullied boy got through middle school, it’s about who we are as people, and who do we really want to be.

It also took a look, through their own eyes, at other ‘related’ persons.

How they felt, how his presence affected them, emphasising that everyone needs attention, understanding, care and love.

This is a beautifully moving story with many parallel, intertwining tales, beginning with the strategies Auggie developed to cope with his affliction and how to deal with people’s reactions – all the while moving forward.

Simultaneously, helping people to open their eyes and see a new, exciting world, all the way to outer space even.

Our children really enjoyed the movie and the whole movie experience.

It is a film for all ages ranging from 7 years upwards.

I and my Year 2/3s would highly recommend it.

Go see it – you will feel uplifted, inspired and truly happy afterwards.

It has been a busy few months for the Wells Girls CWA branch.

The past few months we have started holding crafty afternoons at the Old Council Chambers.

The first one held in midOctober was well attended and one of our members demonstrated how to upcycle small tins into pin cushions.

This day we also made Christmas decorations, aprons and produce bags to sell at the Two Well Xmas parade.

Other afternoons have consisted of people bringing their current craft projects to work on, while having a cuppa and chat.

At our November meeting we learnt to crochet, with a visitor coming in to show us the basics. For some it was a new experience and others a refresher.

Our December meeting was brought forward to

December 12 to allow us to prepare for the Two Wells Street parade.

On this night we finalised the items for the table and made cordial and beeswax food covers.

The last bingo night was held on October 27, a good turn out and fun night was had; keep an eye out for next year’s bingo night.

Like this year, they will be coinciding with the Blue Light Discos.

In the New Year, as a branch we plan to continue our crafty afternoons at the Old Council Chamber at least once a month at 2pm on a Saturday. Dates are still to be confirmed so watch this space.

Our branch meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Two Wells Bowling Club.

Don’t become a Book review: The Lowland a highlight road statistic Each month the Two Wells Book Club will bring you a review of the book that had been read by the group the previous month.

The book club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library.

We hope you enjoy the segment and are provided with an opportunity to engage with some books that you might never have thought to pick up and read.

This month’s book is ‘The Lowland’ by Jhumpa Lahiri.

A well-received novel by all book club members! The Lowlands offers an insight into a culture and history not entirely known by readers.

Coupled with a wonderfully written story, all agreed this 2013 Man Booker Prize nominee, was well worth the read.

Jhumpa Lahiri is an American writer, the daughter of Bengali Indian emigrants.

Her fiction is autobiographical, drawing from her own personal experiences as well as those of her parents, friends, acquaintances and others in the Bengali communities with which she is familiar.

Her characters, often Indian immigrants to America, navigate between the cultural values of their homeland and their adopted home.

Opening in Calcutta, two brothers, Subhash and Udayan, grow into adolescence almost inseparably.

Time and circumstances inevitably see them travel separate life journeys.

When the Vietnam war pulls the world into the focus of the United State’s experience, Udayan, charismatic and impulsive, finds himself drawn into the Naxalite movement, a rebellion waged to eradicate inequity and poverty, in his own country.

Subhash travels to Rhode Island

in the United States to further his education.

Udayan, however, caught up in the political fervour of his beliefs, will give everything, risk all, for what he believes, and in doing so will transform the futures of those dearest to him: his newly married, pregnant wife, his brother and their parents.

For all of them, the repercussions of his actions will reverberate across continents and seep through the generations that follow.

The author is able to illicit empathy from readers for her characters while engaging them in a narrative of political history and familial tragedy over years, decades and generations.

If you are up for an incredible journey over continents and through history, and are looking to seek your teeth into learning about something you may not already know, then have a crack at the Lowlands!

January brings range of invaders A Happy New Year to all the readers of the Amateur Gardener notes, may this year bring you happiness and joy in your garden endeavours.

January brings the aromas of ripening fruit, the squawk of the Cockies but also the delicious fruits of the summer stone fruits.

To keep diseases at bay, remove all fallen fruits and keep the orchard floor clean.

If the ants are still a problem use the sticky ant traps.

White flies still seem to be swarming so early in the morning, or in the cool of the evening, squirt the flies off with a spray of water being sure to do the underside of the leaves as well.

If this is notAMATEUR sufficient make a very weak solutionGARDENER of soapy water using only pure soap and spray in the cool of the evening, making sure all parts of the leaves are covered.

Wash the soapy solution off the next morning and repeat when necessary.

Keep repeating throughout the life cycle of the white fly.

The yellow sticky traps attract the white flies but may attract the beneficial insects such as Lady Birds as well so use the spraying methods in conjunction.

A good deep watering twice a week should beAMATEUR sufficient, except in the really hot spellsGARDENER when more may be needed.

One of the most beautiful flowers for January is the flower of the caper bush– Capparis spinosa.

The Caper bush will grow to approximately one metre tallEby 1.5 metres wide and has long spindly branches.

It enjoys being planted on a mound and likes a hot dry climate with several hours of full sun, and dislikes humidity and, when still establishing, the cold.

G Capers are native to the Mediterranean region- the Middle East, Northern Africa and Southern Europe, the parts of the world which have a climate so similar to our own.

The unopened flowers are what are usually pickled- capers - but the long green fruits called caperberries may be also pickled having a milder taste than the unopened flowers.

The Caper bush can live for up to 30 years but can be frustratingly slow to start, however after seeing the first flower one realises the wait was worth it.

A gentle prune after flowering will help to make it bushier and produce more flowers.

A plant recommended for the Adelaide plains.

It’s time for Supermoto Year’s Eve Track Motards Adelaide are holding a New Year’s Eve ‘ish’, track day at Port Gawler on Saturday December 30.

Anyone is welcome!

If you’re new to the activity, send the team from Track Motards Adelaide a message on facebook and they will help you along every step of the way, including on the day itself.

Spectating is free, and is absolutely worth the trip if you want to see some supermoto in person, or are thinking about having a go, but are not yet sure.

You are welcome to go and suss it out and ask a bunch of questions.

Sign on at 8am, with bikes on

track and ready by 9am.

Any bike is welcome, you just need road tyres whether it be 17” supermoto wheels or road tyres on your 21” and 18”/19” off road wheels.

You are required to bring a few safety items; a helmet with Australian standards or ECE sticker, one or two pieces of leather (no textiles), leather motorcycle gloves, motorcycle boots (road or MX), catch cans for carby and crankcase breathers, radiator overflow bottle, and axle, footpeg and bar end sliders are highly recommended but not essential.

There will be help on the day with catch cans, you are just re-

quired to bring a bottle and some zip ties.

Entrance fees are $65 for seniors, $30 for juniors (under 18s) and spectating is free!

You will also need a MSA license to ride, a one-day license will cost $30 or you are able to purchase an annual license for $130.

On the day, sign in at the kiosk and head on over to the Motard’s pit tent.

The three one-day event phases of dressage, cross-country and showjumping are a challenge for both horse and rider.

Some of Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club’s younger members recently took up an opportunity to gain more experience in these disciplines when they attended a one-day event training day at Mount Pleasant on Sunday November 26.

Each horse and rider combination also had to learn and present a graded dressage test.

The club had a strong contingent of young red and white riders take part in the day with everyone achieving success and learning a great deal.

The Two Wells Bowling Club night bowls, co-ordinated by Tony Zarko and Joyce Dunne, has been well supported.

Players with varying levels of skill have enjoyed the game, played in a good spirit of competitiveness and fun whilst getting some gentle exercise.

After the game a light supper is provided and new friends are made whilst the scores are tallied and the winners get the chocolates.

This season the six teams entered in the Metropolitan Bowls Association are having a middle of the road year.

The ladies Thursday team are the stars sitting third on the ladder.

Ian Campbell has been on hand providing coaching and tips especially for the novice bowlers and Wayne Stauwer ensures there is always a drink available.

Night bowls resumes on January 9th – 6.30pm - so come along and join in.

Alex to play for Association Round 1: This match saw the season open at Two Wells against Craigmore (Blue).

The local Daly boys made a good start to the season with Alex top scoring with 24 runs, Daniel taking a wicket and Michael taking a catch.

Blake Hamilton also made a handy 19 runs to help take their runs to 96. Unfortunately they had a loss with the score ending at Two Wells 7/96 and Craigmore (Blue) 2/131.

Round 2: The boys made a tidy amount of runs, scoring 104.

Their fielding effort was also strong, with a blinder of a catch from Blake Hamilton in the slip area to help keep North Pines (Red) to a total run score of 71.

Blake also topped the wickets taking with two wickets for the game.

Top run scorer again was Alex Daly with 16, closely followed by Lachlan Sochacki on 16 who hit a 6.

The boys shared the runs around with Blake Hamilton, Jacob Pellizzari, Jayke Hansen, Tyler Moyle and Michael Daly all making some runs to add to the total of 4/104. North Pines (Red) 4/71.

Round 3: Two Wells had the Bye. Round 4: This match was against Virginia who forfeited, although for the

Round 5: Two Wells played against North Pines (Green), who made a very good total of 4/175 with three of their players retiring.

Cricket newcomer, Mitchell Boobyer, has done a great job so far this season and scored his first wicket with a bowling.

Jacob Pellizzari also took a very handy catch to help take a wicket.

With all the players getting a bat it was a bit of a mixed lot with some ducks.

Blake Hamilton made a tidy 31 runs, Alex Daly with 23, Lachlan Sochacki with 18, hitting another 6 at what looks to be his favorite ground.

End score Two Wells lost 10/134 to North Pines (Red) 4/175.

Round 6: Another win but a close one for Two Wells.

This was a very low scoring game for both teams seeing them both make less than 100 runs.

Two Wells batted first with a few making some runs and unfortunately two making ducks.

Alex Daly again top scored with 16 runs followed by Logan Bennier with 13.

Two Wells went into field keeping Craigmore (White) to a low score with three of their players also scoring ducks.

Mitchell Boobyer, Alex Daly, Blake Hamilton and Jack Hankins took wickets.

Scores ended up at Two Wells 6/95 defeating Craigmore (White) 7/84.

Round 7: This was a very close match against Angle Vale at their home ground.

Two Wells started the batting, making a total of 81 runs, with Jacob Pellizzari top scoring with a total of 17.

Zac Cleaver finished the innings with a very handy nine-not-out.

This then sent Two Wells out to field with the two youngest taking on the wicket keeping position (Michael Daly and Jayke Hansen).

They both made some great stops for the bowlers.

Blake Hamilton was the top wicket taker with two.

Daniel Daly and Jack Hankins also took a wicket each.

Final score was Angle Vale 6/82 defeated Two Wells 6/81.

Two Wells Women’s Cricket improving The team started with eight players but have picked up a few fill-ins along the way. The girls have played well in each game getting better every week.

Two Wells first game was at home where we made 6 for 159 with top scorer Leanne Pool on 39 not out and taking 2 for 16 with the ball and Ashleigh Devenport taking 2 for 10. Game two saw them venture to Eyre Royals formally known at Rose and Crown where it was a tight match going down by 3 runs. Top scorers were Leanne Pool 31 not out and Ashleigh Devenport 27. With Rebecca Pool taking the only wicket for 18 runs.

Game 3 saw us go to North Pines where they managed another win. Top scorers were Ashleigh Devenport 35 not out Megan Curry 31 not out and Leanne Pool 30 not out. The best bowlers were Ashleigh Devenport 2/29 , Heidi Applebee 1/6, Michelle Taylor who played her first game ever 1/22 and Rebecca Pool 1/26.

Game 4 saw the girls try for an outright win after Para Hills made 5/94 in their first innings.

Rebecca Pool was on fire with the ball taking all 5 wickets for 3 runs off 6 overs with 4 maidens. Two Wells battered the second week making a quick fire 2/125 off 16 overs which saw Leanne Pool make a quick 30 not out and Rebecca Pool making 33 not out. Two wells decided to declare and put Para hills back in to bat and try for an outright win. They just missed out Para Hills holding on just at 6/36.

Two Wells Cricket Club’s Bec Pool took an amazing five wickets for just three runs against Para Hills recently.

Sending the ball whistling down the pitch is no mean feat for any bowler.

Add to this the pressure of trying to take a few wickets with as little runs lost as possible in your allocated overs, and the tension goes up even further.

For Two Wells Cricket Club bowler, Bec Pool, it’s all in a days’ play, taking the pressure, and the wickets, all in her stride.

Bec had a game to remember recently when she returned figures of five wickets for just three runs in six overs.

Four of these were maiden overs too.

One wicket was a caught-andbowled wicket, two were bowled, one was plumb LBW and another was caught in the field.

Bec O’Brien reports:

Impressive by any standards.

Bec has been a regular at the club for many years, following in the footsteps of her mum Leanne.

It’s truly a family affair with sister, Jessica, also playing alongside the pair.

While Bec doesn’t profess to be a strong batter, (though she can undoubtedly hold her own) her bowling this season has been outstanding.
