Another local to feature in the placings was Lewiston resident Ashleigh Westcott, who rode two horses throughout the event and competed in both the ODE and the combined training.

Ashleigh placed 2nd in the EvA105 on Cloverash Mirror Image at the ODE and 1st in the Eva105 class on this horse in the combined

training.

Riding Oceanview Expresso, Ashleigh also placed 2nd in the EvA65 ODE event and 3rd in the same class for the combined training.

Lewiston rider Karen Bentley, on board Captain Jolly Roger, was also in the mix for placings, finishing 2nd in the EvA65 combined training event.

The TWE&PC team wishes to thank all of the many volunteers and

sponsors for their wonderful support throughout the event, with Rebecca Puro saying the support from club members and other volunteers was enormous.

“This year the amount of extra help from all of our members and people in the local area was very encouraging,” she said.

“It’s been great to see the support given to a local event such as this.

Stage group ready to celebrate 35 years Two Wells Melodrama Group is gearing up for its 2017 production this month, marking 35 years since the group’s first show in April 1982.

Since then, approximately $600,000 has been raised for the Two Wells district through the annual melodrama in a unique community collaboration.

This year’s Melodrama, called “A Sweet Tale”, written by Sarah Groom and directed by Eleisha Arbon, will be performed at Two Wells Community Centre for six performances: Friday 12 May, Saturday May 13, Saturday May 20, Friday May 26 and Saturday May 27 all at 7:30pm and a 1pm Matinee performance on Sunday May 21.

Returning to the stage after a few years absence is Katie O’Doherty, who will be the narrator throughout the show.

Also making a comeback is Theresa Moore, who hasn’t been seen on stage since 2011, while teenagers Alessandro Renaglia and Bethany Cattell will get their first taste of melodrama life.

“A Sweet Tale” takes the audience to Lollipop Land, where the workers happily go about their days creating wonderful sweets to sell to the world.

The land is ruled by a very creative king who has come up with a clever plan to save the factory and its people from the oncoming effects of global thawing.

However, the evil sisters from the nearby Salty Plains have different ideas and are coming to take over the land.

Will they prevail?

Will Lollipop Land and its people be saved or just fall under the rule of two evil sisters?

Come along and watch the show, sing along with the songs and find out if the world ends!

All evening performances are $37, which includes a three-course meal, and the matinee tickets are $31, which includes a two-course meal.

Community organisations in the Two Wells area can share in proceeds of the melodrama by encouraging members to help with catering and other ‘front of house’ activities, as well as attending the show.

There are approximately 100 local volunteers ever year and in recognition of their contributions, community groups receive a share of proceeds from tickets sold in their name.

Lush: Shed admin costs if raising council rates THE Adelaide Plains Ratepayers Association voted to ‘meet the council ‘half way’ at its budget discussion meeting on Monday evening.

More than 50 ratepayers from the area, including Cr Steve Jones, turned up to voice a collective, formal response to council’s Draft Budget released to the public for consultation last week.

By accepting option two in the Draft Budget, the association would tolerate an average 2.5 per cent increase in its annual rates (which is higher than the Consumer Price Index) if the council was to match its cutting of expenditure by 2.5 per cent.

The requested 2.5 per cent cut was clarified as a “validated 2.5 per cent decrease in administration costs,” chairman of the association, John Lush said. It was made clear from the ratepayers they did not want the cut to affect wages of workers, but administration.

“None of us want any rate rise, but if we’re going to get the council out of this (debt) somehow we’ve got to deal with it,” Mr Lush added.

Currently the council has debts of about $8 million.

Mr Udugampola said the LTFP would see this debt decrease, suggesting “by 2022, we are basically debt free.”

However, there is no contingency for flood or fire in the LTFP, and any natural disaster would affect how closely the budget is adhered to.

“It is a very tight budget,” Mr Udugampola said.

There was a general agreeance aligning any rate increases to the CPI would have seen a decrease in the standards of services provided to the community, but would, however, make the council toe the line and reign in its spending.

“We need a whole group of new councillors because quite frankly I don’t believe they are acting in the interest of ratepayers,” Mr Lush stated.

“We have to have new candidates at the next election in 2018.”

Free to fee for Adelaide Plains camping sites Campers in the Adelaide Plains Council area will no longer be given a “free ride” when it comes to a short stay in the district, with the introduction of camping fees and stay limits at two popular camping grounds.

APC recently adopted a new Short Stay Accommodation Policy, which outlines new terms and conditions, and sets time frames for campers at the camping grounds.

With regard to camping at the Mallala oval complex, APC has closed this option for travellers, citing the legality of the facility as a temporary short stay site.

Campers will now have to camp in the designated camping ground to the East of the oval and utilise a permit system, with the completion of a self-registration form, which is collected in a

The policy also allows for a fee to be levied for the use of the grounds.

APC’s general manager of infrastructure, Martin Waddington, says the changes will bring council in line with other councils across the state, as well as raise some much needed revenue to maintain the facilities at the sites.

Mr Waddington said council considered the option of budgeting an estimated $13,000 to create a new temporary short stay accommodation area directly east of the Mallala oval, allowing for approximately 12 sites, at its April 18 meeting but the

recommendation was not supported by councillors.

However, a subsequent recommendation introducing a charge of $10 per site per night, which will apply to both Parham and the new Mallala camp ground, as well as the installation of a coin operated timer fitted to the existing shower at the Mallala oval, which is set at $2 for a 7 minute shower, was carried.

“The area where visitors have camped at the Mallala oval is determined to be not a formal or legal camping ground,” Mr Waddington said.

“A new enhanced camping ground is proposed on the newly gazetted area immediately to the east of the oval grounds.

“A further matter is that of the current status of allowing camping free of charge.

“This is at odds with what is considered as normal practice around the state and is also a burden on the ratepayer as the cost of maintaining facilities such as toilets and showers is not offset by any specific income and so has to be funded through general rates.”

Mr Waddington said APC has already begun discussions with interested parties to further develop an enhanced camping ground or caravan park at the proposed new Mallala camp site, which would independently operate the site in the future.

Signage outlining the new changes and charges is currently being installed at Parham and the Mallala oval, with the sites to be managed by council’s general inspector.

Council provides a period of up to 30 minutes for ratepayers to voice their concerns and opinions at the beginning of every council meeting.

Mr Miller says this “open forum” is not a legal requirement of the council and not every council offers it.

Following an alleged outburst in the chamber at council’s March 20 meeting, which resulted in a complaint being made to council, APC’s Governance Advisory Panel investigated the matter and upheld the complaint.

The panel recommended Mr Miller issue a public notice to outline council’s requirements at open forums and throughout its monthly meetings, and sent letters from its lawyers to the individuals concerned in relation to the matter.

Mallala resident, Neil Slater, who regularly speaks at open forum, is seething after he received such a letter.

Mr Slater says he found the behaviour of the CEO and the mayor offensive on the night, and claims the pair was having a private conversation when they were meant to be listening to him.

“The CEO makes a big deal about listening to ratepayers,” he said.

“They were there to listen to what I was saying, and I wasn’t happy with their response.

“We need to make a statement to them, they work for us as ratepayers.”

In a written response addressed to council’s CEO James Miller, Mr Slater said, “I find it difficult to understand, when on both occasions at the February council open forum and the March council open forum, once I had stated my name and where I was from, as instructed by the mayor, both you and the mayor proceeded to hold a whispered conversation whilst I was at the lectern.

“I was always taught that respect needs to be earned not expected and common courtesy includes council staff listening when rate payers are speaking, as you have often indicated that you are willing to do.”

In the community notice issued by APC, Mr Miller said all people who speak at council are reminded to be respectful of the community and mindful of the values “that we share”.

“As is required of elected members and council staff, residents who speak at meetings must extend respect and courtesy no matter how passionate or concerned they might be about any particular matter,” Mr Miller said.

“A council chamber obliges all who attend to extend respect and common courtesy to fellow residents, elected members and council staff.

“Council will not tolerate behaviour or language that reflects disrespect.

“It insists on a safe and respectful environment in which to present views and air concerns.”

At time of going to print Mr Slater had not received a response from Mr Miller about his letter.

Plains produce promotion at revamped expo

A NEW initiative that sees crosstown rivals banding together to promote local businesses and produce is set to stage a huge food festival in Two Wells later in the year.

The proposed Northern Plains Food Festival on October 21st has been billed by the organising committee as a “colourful, happy, noisy, great smelling, great tasting” event, which will feature local food producers, wine, live music, exhibits and entertainment to cater for all ages.

Businesses from across the region are being approached to join the enterprise to bring their skills,

The festival idea is taken from the Virginia Expo of the late 1990s, with enough people supporting the proposal to see the formation of a new group – Northern Plains Compass (NPC) Incorporated - to get it going again, this time including the Two Wells area and alternating between the two towns on an annual basis.

“The organising committee wants to highlight the lifestyle of

country living on the doorstep of Adelaide, whilst showcasing the food production and business potential of the Two Wells / Virginia area,” a press release by the group stated.

Playford councillor and NPC vice-president, Peter Rentoulis, says it was the perfect opportunity for the neighbouring townships to work together to promote and highlight their local businesses and produce.

“This is just going to showcase the Adelaide Plains and everything it has to offer,” Mr Rentoulis said.

“We think it’s going to grow each year and go from strength to strength.”

With the ink still wet on the group’s incorporation documents, Northern Plains Compass are delving head-first into seeking sponsorship and funding for the event and hope to access funds from the state’s “Building Better Regions Fund”.

Adelaide Plains Councillor and NPC president, Eddie Stubing, is enthusiastic about the festival and the potential it holds.

“This is just going to be huge,” he said.

“It puts the northern region on the map.

“It’s just so exciting.”

Comrie calls for council cost control

WITH a forecast deficit of $1.154 million, Adelaide Plains Council has been urged to focus on expenditure by John Comrie, chairman of the APC Audit Committee.

APC approved the Draft 2017/2018 Annual Business Plan, Budget and 2018-2027 Long Term Financial Plan (LTFP) document for public consultation at the April 18 general meeting.

“The key thing for your council to focus on is the ongoing operating result, this council has an operating deficit, of the order of $700,000 per annum,” Mr Comrie said.

“It needs, therefore, to be careful about its expenditure decisions.”

process, achieved over five to seven years.

The draft budget was prepared on council’s previous rate capping motion, since rescinded; illustrating what a 1.8 per cent, 3 per cent and 3.25 per cent increase would look like for ratepayers.

Councillors talked of further workshopping budgetary ideas to bring spending down, rather than increasing rates, in order to service its payment obligations on time without borrowing more money.

Cr Strudwicke emphasised the need to look at how much was going to be spent, rather than how much was going to be raised, during the workshops.

“We need to look at what potential there is to cut, now there may be no potential to cut, in which case that decision becomes a harder decision, in terms of the rates,” he said.

Finance and Economic Development general manager, Rajith Udugampola, said council needed to cut about $1 million of expenses to break even.

This could be staggered over subsequent financial years to minimise the effect on community services, however he explained a cut of $239,000 was already proposed after last month’s rate capping decision and “to cut further will impact the community”.

Talk of using external contractors for some services, such as waste collection, in a bid to save money on wages was discussed.

“For many of our services, we look towards what is the most economical way of delivering those services,” infrastructure general manager, Martin Waddington said.

“In the past, we have found that internalising those services, delivering them ourselves, has been the most cost-effective way of doing it.

“It’s a balance.”

The idea of workshopping the issue was once again raised with Cr Strudwicke winding up the motion to pass the Draft Budget with a final comment.

“At this stage all we’re saying is here let the community have a say as well as show them the document, they can then provide some input back to us on May 8, in the meantime we’ll have a workshop.”

Local volunteers given time to sit back and relax Adelaide Plains Council will once again be supporting National Volunteer Week – this year from May 8 to 14 – by offering a free movie screening to local volunteers.

Popular movies “Hidden Figures” and “Going in Style” will be shown on Tuesday 9 May 2017 at the Gawler Cinemas, with council inviting local volunteers to attend either a morning or evening session.

In a statement APC said “council wishes to acknowledge and thank our many valued local volunteers who provide a variety of essential community, environmental, sporting and cultural services”.

Adelaide Plains Council backflips on CPI rate rise restrictions Adelaide Plains Council rescinded last month’s motion of aligning any future rate increases with each year’s South Australian Consumer Price Index at its general meeting on Tuesday April 18.

After passionate exchanges on the topic of financial burdens carried by ratepayers during the open forum, mayor Tony Flaherty, moved the motion to rescind last month’s decision on the basis of inadequate discussion being exchanged on the controversial topic.

An easy motion to carry with two absent councillors, who were in favour of the original decision to restrict rate increases.

“The reason that I did this was because there

wasn’t a great deal of discussion when the original motion went up and I know that a couple of councillors weren’t happy with the way that they actually voted,” mayor Flaherty said.

“So all this is doing is rescinding the motion and then it can come back with our budget.

“This is purely to give us a chance to speak to the ratepayers, and this will come back and it will be voted on again, it is not to stop anything.”

Councillor Strudwicke supported the mayor’s views believing the decision on any rate increase should be set on the basis of the budget.

With only six councillors present at the meeting, the mayor cast the deciding vote, rolling back any decision on the capping of rate increases.

Crs Strudwicke and Joe Daniele voted in favour of the motion, as did Cr Stubing.

Crs Keene, Lawrence and Jones retained their position on unregulated increases.

Crs DiTroia, McColl and Picard were absent.

A budgetary workshop will be held in the coming weeks where the issue will once again be discussed and brought back to the chamber.

Lots of local hype over NAIS The State Government’s recent commitment to invest $110 million into the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme (NAIS) has generated much excitement and speculation on how this will directly affect growers in the region.

Representatives from Primary Industries and Regions, South Australia (PIRSA) and SA Water, gave a presentation on the NAIS at Adelaide Plains Council’s April 18 meeting.

CEO James Miller invited PIRSA representative, Bengy Paolo and SA Water representative, Mark Wilson to give councillors a better understanding of what the investment will look like for the region, in what Mr Miller described as a “really exciting project in our backyard.”

Mr Paolo explained the investment into the scheme is clearly aimed for export competitive production, bringing new investment in infrastructure and also on-farm production.

Business opportunities in the region will arise such as the supplying of material and equipment.

Mark Wilson of SA Water turned attention to the infrastructure of the scheme.

“We’ve spent quite a bit of time developing storage guidelines around the storing of water on the Adelaide Plains and the preferred site identified was at Bolivar,” Mr Wilson said.

“To paint a picture of the large pipeline, we’re talking about a 1200mm diameter main pipeline, really big infrastructure, not just sized for the initial 12 gig, the pipeline is sized to push even more water through.”

Increased water treatment capacity at Bolivar is also in the plan.

“The next step we need to take is to get confirmed interest from the end users, the farmers, in actually buying the water,” he said.

“Contrary to some speculation in the media we have not committed all the water to a large overseas consortium.

participate in and be on the same level playing field to put up their hand to ask for a water contract from the NAIS. “We want to see the water go into production we want to see it go into economic use and generating jobs and growth in the region.”

When the water contracts come out to market in the coming months, growers who are willing to make a commitment to buy the water will have full pricing available, and long term water supply contracts.

“We are talking here about very long term water supplying contracts with a 100 per cent guarantee water security, “Mr Wilson explained.

“This is not like the River Murray where in a bad season you can have your allocation cut.

There will also be flexibility in the contract negotiations.

Storage of the recycled water has been a contentious issue ever since the possibility of storage in the T2 aquifer, which could have had an impact on local bores where residents sourced drinking water from, was explored as a

possibility two years ago.

However, after extensive community consultation, feedback obtained on storing water in the Northern Adelaide Plains was to make sure the recycled water went to areas where the existing ground water table was isolated, and not used by people for drinking.

The target areas for water storage are towards the north of where the T2 aquifer gets into the highest salinity, and people are not tapping into that aquifer as there is no other use for it.

Residents queried the risk of the recycled water tuning salty.

It was explained that there will be a little interplay between what is injected and what is down there, “so you lose a little bit of your injected volume,” Mr Wilson answered.

“The quality of water in the NAIS is the same high quality as the Virginia Pipeline Scheme,” he stated.

“So it’s approved for unrestricted irrigation direct on food crops.

“Only a very small margin below drinking water quality.”

Council recently submitted a Statement of Intent (SOI) to the Minister for Planning, John Rau, for the Northern Food Bowl Protection Areas Development Plan Amendment (DPA).

With the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme (NAIS) project rapidly advancing, council sought to make this DPA a priority.

Minister Rau endorsed the SOI, and Adelaide Plains Council management will now prioritise the advancement of the DPA, which ultimately will provide opportunities for investment and employment growth.

Commenting on behalf of the CEO, APC’s general manager of development and community, Robert Veitch, said the week leading up to Easter had been a good week for council.

“On the Monday, the state government announced its commitment of $110 million to the NAIS, and a couple of days later, Minister Rau informed us he was in agreement with the SOI,” Mr Veitch said.

The extension of the Virginia Pipeline System (VPS) will provide treated wastewater for irrigation, thereby facilitating the growth of food production north of the Gawler River.

The (NAIS) project will enable an additional 20 gigalitres of recycled water to be available for irrigation on the Northern Adelaide Plains.

This will facilitate the expansion of irrigation in horticulture and field and fodder crops, and other food production related uses as well as the creation of approximately 3500 jobs.

The DPA will seek to provide opportunities for investment and employment growth throughout Adelaide’s northern food bowl areas.

The area affected by the proposed DPA comprises approximately 30,000 hectares of land within the Adelaide Plains Council area including land zoned as primary production (approximately 28 000 hectares) and land zoned as horticulture (approximately 3000 hectares).

It is also council’s intention to introduce new flood hazard maps into the Development Plan to provide more comprehensive and up-to-date information on the level of hazard for areas within the floodplains of both the Gawler River and the Light River.

This is crucial to ensuring a risk based approach is administered when determining development of the areas potentially affected from inundation of flood water from both the Light and Gawler Rivers.

By amending the Development Plan policy, infrastructure efficiencies will be maximised as will the ongoing protection of Adelaide’s northern food bowl areas.

At the recent April 18 ordinary council meeting council members voted to go ahead immediately with the preparation of the DPA, committing to have it completed by December 1 of this year.

“It is a fairly ambitious timeframe,” Mr Veitch said, however is confident that it will be achieved, “this is very good for the APC and everyone will benefit.”

John Dawkins MLC May update It was with great pleasure that I accepted the offer from Mr Steven Griffiths, Member for Goyder, to take over his Echo column.

Steven’s column has been running for many years throughout the electorate and is a vital tool for keeping readers informed about state politics and the plan that the Liberal Party has for South Australia in the lead-up to the 2018 State election.

If you weren’t aware, the electorate of Goyder will no longer be called that come the 2018 election. The electorate has been renamed “Narungga”, and its boundaries have also changed. It extends further north than previously, encompassing the towns of Port Broughton, Snowtown, Lochiel, Bute and Alford. Two Wells actually now finds itself in the electorate of Taylor, alongside Virginia, while Angle Vale shifts into the seat from Light.

His wife, Lisa is currently working at Defence Science and Technology Group as the executive assistant to the Chief of Land Division.

They have three boys, Alexander, Nicholas and Lachlan.

Fl Lt Murdock said his time in the Air Force has been challenging and rewarding.

“It is the challenges that have developed me as a team player, a follower and a leader,” he said.

“I fully recommend any eligible person to consider employment in the Air Force to aspire and achieve their goals and dreams.”

Many people remain unaware of their electorate following the boundary redistribution. This is unsurprising given hundreds of thousands of people were shifted into different electorates following the Electoral Boundary Redistribution Commission’s verdict early this year.

The boundary redistribution was much more extensive than previous cycles.

Primarily, this is because of the Liberal Party winning 53 per cent of the vote at the 2014 election and still being unable to form government.

I have deep roots in the area having lived and farmed at Gawler River and have had sporting links throughout Two Wells & Districts for many years. I was also part of the local team of volunteers which worked on the Two Wells Community Newsletter, from which the Echo has evolved, when it was founded in 1978.

TWO Wells resident Thomas Murdock, 54, is doing his country proud; he is currently deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan on Operation Highroad.

Fl Lt Murdock joined the Air Force in 1982.

“It provided an opportunity to broaden my outlook on life and to travel,” he said.

Before joining the Air Force he was employed as an assistant car spare parts manager in Hornsby, NSW. He completed his final two years of high school at St Leo’s College, Wahroonga NSW. “I had an opportunity to study a Graduate Certificate in Engineering (Test and Evaluation) at the University of Adelaide,” Fl Lt Murdock said.

He is currently embedded with the Australian Defence Force coalition partners at Train, Advise, Assist Command – Air (TAAC-Air).

“My role is to assist key Afghan Air Force (AAF) staff in the Air-to-Ground Integration,” he said.

“The current focus of my role is to develop and provide Afghan Terminal Air Coordinator training.”

This is his second operational deployment and he has found this deployment more challenging and rewarding as TAAC-Air is building a solid foundation for a sustainable and formidable AAF. Fl Lt Murdock said his main challenges were the cultural and language barriers.

“Nevertheless, once an open and frank friendship has been established the language is the only thing that stands in the way,” Fl Lt Murdock said.

About 800 roll up to Two Wells service

Dark clouds gathered and darkness was yet to be swept away by the rising sun as an estimated 800 people quietly made their way to the Two Wells War Memorial Gardens for the annual Anzac Day service on Tuesday, April 25.

Rugged against the Autumn morning chill, mums and dads and their children, along with grandparents and neighbours, waited patiently with veterans, service men and women, and family, while a cacophony of birds heralded the start of a new day.

A hush fell over those gathered as members of the Two Wells Scout group formed a guard of honour along the path as the catafalque party marched in.

Special guests, family members and individuals alike laid wreaths in remembrance and prayers were quietly spoken.

The mood was one of reverence and respect, of thankfulness and hope.

Two Wells RSL president and District Council of Mallala mayor, Tony Flaherty, led proceedings, as he does every year, saying Anzac day was not only a time to remember those lost but also a time to pay tribute to the many men and women currently serving our country in search of peace.

Mr Flaherty introduced Islamic Association of South Australia Imam Shaikh Mohammad Tawhidi to the crowd - whose social media accounts give voice to a constant campaign against ISIS and other extremists - urging those in attendance to chat with the shaikh.

Quietly spoken, Imam Tawhidi said the service was “very inspiring” and it was a pleasure to attend.

government officials, however, he seeks to promote peace, tolerance, equality and respect.

Following the service, members of the local branch of the Country Women’s Association, the Wells Girls, distributed freshly baked Anzac biscuits while later a team of volunteers served a gunfire breakfast of sausages, bacon, eggs, toast and beans in the community centre.

A big shout out to local Two Wells business, Patchis Pizza, who donated a massive 45 kilograms of bacon and more than 30 dozen eggs for the breakfast.

With the number of people attending the Anzac Day service in Two Wells each year there is little doubt future generations will continue to honour and pay homage to Australia’s service men and women.

Their sacrifices will forever be remembered.

Virginia PS students pay respects

Holiday or not, Anzac Day should be acknowledged A mother recently shared on Facebook that no Anzac Day commemoration would be held this year at the school her children attend, and being a member of the Defence Force, she was less than impressed.

The fact that Anzac Day fell in the middle of the school holidays, she felt, was not deemed an appropriate reason for the absence of an official observance.

Recognition of the day would occur in classrooms rather than a whole school assembly, where traditions such as the laying of the wreath, a minute’s silence, and the Last Post are observed.

She was not alone in her sentiment.

Comments in response to her post ranged from disappointment to disgust, with many finding it ultimately disrespectful.

We celebrate Mother’s day, Father’s Day, Easter, Christmas and a range of other religious observances, some even lucky enough to be awarded a whole-school assembly, where students sit quietly, eyes glazed over till the songs are sung, awards are handed out, the birthday kids have been recognised, and the Principal has spoken.

But it is felt that Anzac Day, and the rituals that accompany the commemoration, should be a tradition that is ingrained to the core of our beings, despite falling in the middle of the school holidays.

Time should be set aside in the school term to lay the wreath, hear the Last Post and observe a minute’s silence to serve as a reminder of the futility of war and the fragility of life.

not comprehend of our own selves.

And yet, They experienced it.

Young lives sacrificed at the altar of patriotic loyalty, of what they believed to be fundamentally right for humankind.

Not all families sacrifice their public holiday sleep-in to rise early and brave the cold morning air to stand in remembrance at dawn once a year, paying tribute to Those who did far more.

So it is left to the institutions we belong to, to provide the opportunity to pause, remember and pay tribute.

It makes us better human beings.

Even if five and six year-olds do not fully understand the context and meaning of the ritual, at the very least, they are exposed to the tradition.

And they will grow into their own understanding, just as religious individuals pay homage to the man who gave his own life on the cross.

But Anzacs, and indeed all veterans, are not remembered weekly, they are given one day of the year, where the offering of their lives, for individuals who they would never know, is given respect and homage that can never compensate.

The one day of the year where veterans who were never given a ticker tape parade upon their return, or who were spat on in protest of their service, are honoured.

They are honoured in a fashion which serves to remind us that we should never repeat the same mistakes or take for granted the individual worth of each soul that is offered for the sake of our own.

And we should remember them.

Each and every year.

A Day in the Life of a Primary School Teacher

BUDGET PRIORITIES In the second week of May, the Turnbull Government will hand down the Federal Budget.

This will be the fourth Budget the Liberals have handed down since coming to power in 2013 with their first budget in 2014 being regarded as one of the worst received in living memory.

The Turnbull Government needs to ensure this Budget has a focus on job creation and training for our young people. The signs already are not promising.

The Abbott/Turnbull Government have already cut over $2.5 billion from skills and training which has seen a 40% reduction in apprentices in Wakefield alone.

In Turnbull’s budget, funding for TAFE, skills and apprenticeship programs are facing another annual cut of over $500 million a year.

In contrast, Labor will be making sure that people are getting high skilled and well paid jobs by supporting and expanding a quality apprenticeship system.

Labor will boost apprentice numbers by investing in skills and by setting a target for one in ten jobs on major Commonwealth projects to be filled by apprentices.

Funding for state government projects will also be dependent on the project having a Training and Apprenticeship Plan that includes the employment of apprentices.

After his assault on apprentices, Malcolm Turnbull will be giving a $50 billion tax giveaway to big business and the banks. Labor will always prioritise the future of our young people before giving tax breaks to big business.

Busy but rewarding n What is your name and what is your occupation?

Christin Valley, I am a Year 5/6 Classroom Teacher at Angle Vale Primary School. n How long have you been a teacher?

Nine years. n What studies do you need to fulfil to be able to do this type of work?

To be registered as a teacher in South Australia you must meet the Board’s minimum qualification requirements.

You must hold higher education (ie. university) qualifications that total at least four years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) study, including an approved teacher education qualification.

I myself completed an undergraduate degree in Arts (sociology and economics) and then a Masters of Primary Education.

The undergraduate degree ultimately got me into my Masters program (yet, not necessarily relevant). n Describe your usual day, starting from when you get up to when your head hits the pillow.

6:30 am get up – shower, dress, coffee and piece of toast and make my lunch.

7:30am get daughter up and dressed and fed and then drop her off at Daycare.

Arrive at school (if I’m lucky around 8:15am) and complete any photocopying/organising, get roll, put up date and plan for the day on board.

8:45 – Students come in and I have a chat with them before the bell rings.

8:55 – Take the roll and go through the plan for the day.

9:05 to 11:35 – morning lessons , always English – writing, reading, grammar or spelling , and depending on the day we could have library or aerobics, STEM or Health (3 separate lessons all up).

11:35 – Organise some mu-

sic for the students to listen to during eating time, chat with a student or two about their classwork/ behaviour.

11:45 – Eat some lunch and mark schoolwork, organise lessons and set up classroom if necessary for a lesson.

12:25 – Often have noncontact where my students head off to another subject, giving me time for planning, marking, meetings with Admin about students, and time to contact parents about their children.

1:15 – Another lesson, often Maths or Science.

2:05 – Outside for recess duty three times a week. When I am not on recess duty, I try and let students stay in if they want to chat or do work.

2:25 – Another lesson, civics, arts, music, science.

3:15 – Pack kids up and time for them to go home.

(The day to day part is difficult as it constantly changes depending on the day and sometimes the week! You need to get used to adapting to change as much as possible as a teacher!)

3:30pm- Meetings once or twice a week depending on the week, always Tuesdays till 5pm (staff meeting). If no meeting I usually stay till 4:45-5pm reorganising the classroom, planning, marking, talking to parents, planning excursions or incursions, meeting with other teachers to debrief about the day or work to come.

5pm - Home to my family.

Give bubs a bath and then feed her dinner. I have an amazing husband that often cooks dinner (which is great because I am horrible at it! But we try to share the after work stuff as we both work full time).

7pm – Put bubs to bed.

7:30 – Eat dinner and have a break!

9:00 – Do some more work, marking, planning, and administration basically whatever I didn’t get done or is on my list!

10:30- Bed (I often read u n t i l I fa l l asleep – usually takes about 5 minutes!) n What do you enjoy about this occupation? Have you enjoyed any particular highlights throughout your experiences?

I love working with kids, they never cease to amaze me.

So many different personalities with so much insight to offer.

The most rewarding moment for me is seeing the look in my student’s eyes when they realise they ‘finally got it’, the lightbulb or ‘aha’ moment.

I also love it when they are so engaged in an activity that they forget the time or when we have had such a busy and exciting day that they don’t even realise the day is over! Watching a student learn new things is great but also watching them grow as a little person (individual) is so rewarding, for example, learning the difference between right and wrong.

In my first week of teaching, I had written something on my chalkboard (yes I had one of these) and I did not edit my own work.

Needless to say I spelt something wrong.

One of my students pointed it out and being absolutely mortified I quickly told him, “that’s that way we spell it in Canada” (I am originally from Canada myself).

Not only did he believe me but so did my SSO! If I spelt something wrong on my board today, it would prob-

ably be on purpose to see if my students were paying attention, also reminding them of the importance of making mistakes and using them as opportunities to learn something new.

They know this story as I often share it with my class, so when they do catch my ‘mistakes’ they now joke with me saying, ‘it’s just the way they spell it in Canada!” n What type of changes have you seen in Education?

Change is constant, and a given.

Change happens all the time in my profession, I think I am on my fifth curriculum since I started teaching 10 years ago.

You learn to go with the flow or you become angry, the first choice being much less stressful.

The great thing about change is when it comes to personal development and learning, there are always new ways to teach or get your message across to students.

Also with new curriculum comes new technology and there are some great opportunities out there to learn new apps/devices/ games/robotics and how to integrate them into the curriculum, which I am really enjoying.

You are definitely never too old to learn something new! n What advice would you give to anyone who is looking at entering this profession?

You need to have a lot of patience, understanding and compassion for children.

You need to be firm but fair and know that every relationship you create will make you that much more successful in helping your students succeed. You also need to know how to enjoy yourself and have a little fun.

The things I am most passionate about are the things my students tend to enjoy the most.

You also need to be able to deal with change and be willing to always learn new things.

School holiday geocaching fun About 20 school-aged children hit the streets of Two Wells to try their hand at geocaching during the school holidays.

The Two Wells library held the program on April 18, meeting at the Uniting Church and walking down to Hart Reserve to where Cameron from Active Education had carefully placed eight (pseudo) geocaches for the participants to find using their supplied GPS devices.

Cameron explained that geocaching is basically a world-wide scavenger, or treasure, hunt.

Players register on-line, download an app, and set off to find geocaches of all different shapes and sizes.

“Some are easy to find, others are hard,” he said.

“But once you find them you must always put it back in the exact place where you found them, so that others can find the geocache as well.

“A typical cache hidden is usually a small waterproof container containing a log book and sometimes a pen or pencil.

“You write your established codename and the date in order to prove that you found it.”

Participants broke up into groups of three and four and were instructed on how to use the GPS device.

Once they were set, they raced around Hart reserve, uncovering little treasures of stamps placed in containers, where they marked a piece of paper to prove they were found.

The warm weather saw all those running from post to post, thoroughly worn out, yet enjoyed the experience of something new.

Isaac Jacobs thought the afternoon was great finding the activity. “(It was) very fun and educational for us to learn from,” he said.

All the colour and fun of Wakakirri for VPS Virginia Primary School will take part in Australia’s largest performing arts event for schools this year, Wakakirri.

Wakakirri promotes the sharing of stories, through dance and theatre, while developing creative thinking, school and self pride, and life skills for all participants.

A Wakakirri story dance is a 3-7 minute performance by a group of students who theatrically tell a story using a combination of dance, creative movement and acting to pre-recorded music.

The event is open to all schools across the country with prizes awarded in a range of categories.

This is the first time VPS has entered the event and the school has chosen to tell the story of its popular Vietnamese teacher, ThiHien Danh, who travelled as a refugee by boat to Australia from Vietnam, via Thailand, when she

Thi-Hien’s story has all the makings of a Hollywood movie, with suspense, fear, courage, and love.

There’s even a heart-stopping encounter with pirates.

“I remember the journey,” Thi Hien said.

“My mum took a risk (but) it was an adventure.”

Ninety-two students from years 3-7 will take part in the event in a variety of roles including on stage and backstage.

They will perform at the Entertainment Centre in August but have weeks of planning and rehearsals ahead of them, with the whole school community pitching in to help create costumes and sets and coordinate each scene.

VPS teacher, Sue Graham, who is coordinating the school’s involvement, says the Wakakirri performance involves many different elements and the vibe amongst the students was upbeat and positive.

“The challenge for our students is how to get the important moments across to an audience in under seven minutes,” Ms Graham said.

“There is such a creative energy already.

“Students are learning new skills, such as how to incorporate moving sets into a performance and how to best communicate Thi Hien’s story to a large audience.

“It is new learning for students and teachers alike (and) Thi Hien’s journey reflects the stories of many of our Virginia families, both past and present who have come to Australia seeking a better life.”

Top vegetable honours for Liu South Australia’s leading vegetable growers were recognised at the 2017 AUSVEG SA and William Buck Vegetable Industry Award for Excellence on May 12 at the Arkaba Hotel.

The Awards for Excellence provided the opportunity to showcase the dedication to high quality produce, innovation and leadership within these vitally important industries in South Australia.

The winners were announced at an industry dinner, attended by about 200 growers and industry members who gathered to celebrate the significant contributions of members of the state’s vegetable and broader horticulture industry.

The awards were attended by a number of leading political figures, including Leon Bignell, Minister for Agricullture, Food and Fisheries, Senator Anne Ruston, Assistant

Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources and Virginia councillor, Peter Rentoulis.

Buckland Park greenhouse vegetable grower and packer, Henry Liu, managing director of P’Petual Holdings, was awarded the top honours of Grower of the Year.

The award was granted in recognition of Henry’s work in growing a modest greenhouse business into a high-tech glasshouse enterprise that is a leading producer of tomatoes in Adelaide’s north.

Henry has overseen significant growth in the business over the years and is currently planning an ambitious expansion of the business with international investment.

All winners are now in the running for the National Awards for Excellence, to be held in Adelaide in May.

Young Airlie’s magnificent Vietnam vacation Travel Diary with Airlie Tapscott

Last month I went to Vietnam and Laos for two weeks with my Nanna, Aunty and five other ladies.

We travelled from Adelaide to Singapore and then to Ho chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam.

We went to see the Cu Chi Tunnels where there was a lot of fighting in the VietnamWar,then drove to the Mekong Delta where we went on many different boats to visit a fish farm, a coconut candy factory, a bee

farm to taste honey and saw a rubber tree plantation.

We then flew to and went on bicycles to a fishing village, then got into round basket boats made from coconut palm leaves, to row up the Thu Bon river.

We had races with the other boats and it was lots of fun.

Afterwards the people in the fishing village showed us how to cook spring rolls and other food for our lunch.

We also did lots of shopping in Hoi An and visited

Marble Mountain.

Then we flew to Hanoi.

Here we had a ride around the city in a cyclo (trishaw).

We went to see the water puppets, the museum and visited the mausoleum where the body of president Ho Chi Minh is kept.

The next day we went to Halong Bay and spent a night on board a ‘junk’ called The White Dolphin.

We visited some caves with stalactites and stalagmites on one of the hundreds of islands in the bay. I really

liked squid fishing with the boat crew.

From Hanoi we flew to Luang Prabang in Laos.

We visited an elephant rescue camp and I rode on an elephant called Miss Ping Pong and took her into the Mekong River to be washed.

She squirted water all over me and kept ducking down in the water! She was very cheeky.

I fell into the water and she tried to help me get back onto her but I couldn’t and had to wade to the shore. It

was great fun.

In the afternoon we went to the Kuang Si Waterfalls.

They were really beautiful and I climbed to the top,which was very high.

In the same park we saw Moon Bears in the Moon Bear Rescue Camp. They are very cute creatures.

I bought a t-shirt and donated some money to help free the bears.

The next day we were part of a cooking class and had to make lots of Lao food, which we ate for lunch.

Some of the food was a bit spicy but I really liked the black sticky rice with mango.

On our way back to Australia we stopped at Singapore and had time to visit the zoo.

It is very pretty with many trees and lakes and you can go around on a little tram to visit all the animals.

I got to feed the giraffes and saw many orangutans in the big trees.

We left Singapore and flew back to Adelaide.

It was a wonderful trip and I would love to go again.

Leonardo Christopher Hardiman arrived early in the morning weighing 8lb 7.5oz (3850 grams) and 52.5cm in length. Little Leo is the third grandson for Leanne and Clinton of Karoonda and Tricia and Jim of Two Wells.

He is pictured right and below, with Devon and Caroline and excited big brothers, Oliver and Hugo.

May 10 is World Migratory Birds Day and the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary, SA’s newest park and one that incorporates much of the Adelaide Plains coastline, is ready to celebrate with not one but two competitions. Silver Anniversary A big congratulations to Michael and Penny Slattery of Lewiston who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last month. And what better way to celebrate than with a candlelit dinner and a night at the movies – gold class style no less!! However, this was a cinema with a difference, as the couple’s nine (yes, you read that right!) children created their own cinema at home complete with tickets, a menu, reserved seating, ushers and waiters. Sounds like it was an anniversary to remember. Way to go Slattery clan! Can’t wait to see what you do for their 30th!

14 May- Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. Grab a bunch of flowers for the special mother, grandmother, aunt, or carer in your life.

15 May - International Day of Families. It is hoped that this day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic

and demographic processes affecting families.

31 May- World No Tobacco Day is observed around the world every year on this day. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and its negative health effects.

Funds for Cyclone Debbie Students at VPS saw the devastation caused by Cyclone Debbie in Queensland recently and decided to do their bit to

help with the relief efforts. The school’s Year 4/5 classes held a stall, which sold a variety of home-baked goods including cakes, slices, cookies and fudge and incorporated a guess the jelly bean competition and raffle. Pictured top of the page are students Angie, Amity, Sam and Milanee. Some things were even made on-site by the students themselves.

All money raised from the stall will be sent to the cyclone relief fund. Well done VPS.

Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary

South Australian Power for South Australians APC coastal officer Warrick Barnes, looks for the bitter-bush coastal butterfly at Parham.

Helping our local butterflies With lots of talk about the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary it could be easily forgotten that the coast in the north doesn’t have anything to offer but birds.

Over the past few years works to better understand and manage two coastal butterfly species have been undertaken through the federally funded Samphire Coast Icon Project of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board and BirdLife Australia.

A study concerning the Bitter-bush Blue Butterfly and its host plant the Coast Bitter-Bush is currently being undertaken to develop an action plan to maintain sustainable populations of both the host plant and butterfly.

The host plant is at risk in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges region due to urbanisation and agricultural development and the Bitter-bush blue butterfly requires the plant to lay eggs and as food for the caterpillar.

Once finalised, this action plan will help land managers and conservation groups to plan works and projects focusing on maintaining stable populations of both species.

Warrick Barnes reports: The Yellowish Sedge-Skipper butterfly hasn’t been seen on the northern Adelaide plains for a number of years and is thought to be locally extinct.

A recovery plan for the species was written in 2000 and a review and an assessment of works undertaken after the recovery plan were completed in 2014.

Since the review, a significant investment has been made to recreate sedgelands of Thatching Grass, which the butterfly requires to lay eggs and as food for the caterpillar, whilst also reviewing benefits of Thatching Grass in a horticultural setting.

Now, through the Samphire Coast Icon Project, studies are currently underway looking at the feasibility of re-introducing this butterfly and indentifying potential donor populations from the Yorke Peninsula where the butterfuly still exists.

These are exciting times for butterflies along the northern Adelaide coastline and just like a butterfly, our eggs have hatched, caterpillars have fed, cocoons have been built and we wait patiently to see what emerges.

Writers’ visit highlights Aussie history Popular Australian non-fiction writer, Kristin Weidenbach, will be a special guest speaker at the Two Wells Bowling Club on Tuesday, 23 May as part of the Two Wells Library’s regular organised author visits.

Kristin is an accomplished children’s and adult author.

She is the writer of the Australian bestseller “Mailman of the Birdsville Track: the Story of Tom Kruse”, which has sold over 100,000 copies since it was published in 2003.

Her children’s picture book “Tom the Outback Mailman” won the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Eve Pownall Award for Information Book of the Year in 2013.

Winter is coming, so get out your pruners The month of May is already here heralding the end of autumn and soon the start of winter.

The days are shorteningso less time in the garden.

To keep the couch lawns from browning off too much in winter, give a small dose of fertiliser. For the garden beds- rake the fallen leaves and either place in the compost or thinly strew as mulch AMATEUR and to supply some humus GARDENER for the worms.

Many salvias are flowering but the ones that have finished, a prune to 2/3rd of G the height is recommended.

Slugs and snails are again on the march, but although there are many commercial brands, the good old beer traps are safe for the garden, children and pets.

Using a container, such as an old margarine pot, bury

The next day will surprise you to see just how many slugs and snails have been attracted to the beer and slipped in.

The contents may then be just thrown onto the garden.

Now is the time to plant some seeds or seedlings for a winter and early spring display.

In the flower beds- plant pansy, violas, stocks, and poppies.

For the vegetable garden- plant brassicas, alliums snow and snap peas, beans, spinach and parsley.

Parsley planted in the ornamental beds as a garden edging plant is quite effective as well as being a pretty cut leaf to go with the ornamental flowers.

n Words By: Melinda Boyce, APEC n Photos By: Bec Antoney-Black Last month Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club had the opportunity to host a ‘Come & Try Western Trail’ day with instructor Naomi Moore from Norneo Appaloosa’s.

Naomi is a keen competitor and winner in this discipline and we were lucky to secure her with her busy work schedule.

APEC would like to extend its thanks to Naomi for her instruction on Sunday April 23.

We had a lovely day with perfect weather and the atmosphere was just lovely.

Obstacles included gates, bridges, poles and cones which participants had to tackle in sequence.

We had both riders and participants leading their horses around the course. Participants left with lots of helpful tips to try out and practice with their horses at home.

Once again, there was a lovely BBQ breakfast and lunch provided by our new caterer Carley Robery, who is doing a wonderful job cooking and feeding everyone. We have also had interest from some APEC members in joining our committee, so a big thank you to them also.

Without our committee we wouldn’t have a club.

Endless summer chasers migrate north Within our February landcare article I mentioned a project I was involved with which involved catching, tagging and fitting transmitters to a number of migratory shore birds that visit our coastal shores.

I am pleased to share further information on their journey back to the Northern hemisphere.

The Male Grey Plover CAU has departed and as of the 19th April the plover had travelled over 2,400 kilometres over central Australia and near Collier Bay on the Kimberley Coast, Indian Ocean.

Grey Plover CAS had made landfall over 4,460 kilometres in northern Sulawesi Indonesia.

Last year two Grey Plovers were tracked making an epic 15,000-kilometre journey from Thompson Beach to Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean.

Our coastal region has some fantastic landscapes and provides many opportunities for recreation.

Walking trails, kayaking, fishing, bird watching and much more.

Native Plant project I have a lot of people ask me where can I get plants that are indigenous to our region?

Well, this may be the answer you are looking for.

The 2017 Understory Project is on

again. From April/May to August each year the NRC and Gawler Environment and Heritage Association (GEHA) team up to bring residents of Gawler and surrounding areas the opportunity to purchase cheap locally indigenous plants.

This program will enable landholders to purchase indigenous plants at a reduced price of $26 for 20 plants or $65 for 50 plants. For more information visit the Website: www.nrcgawler.org.au River Corridors I recently took one of my family members out who requires the use of a wheel chair for a stroll.

I wanted an area that offers an opportunity to relax and enjoy some time out and just escape for a while from the hustle and bustle of life.

I decided to go to Dead Mans Pass in Gawler.

The great thing about this reserve is that it has a designated walking/bike and wheel chair friendly path that has

been constructed within the Gawler river corridor.

I believe the Gawler river system to be one of our greatest natural environmental landscapes.

This river meanders across the Adelaide plains through our region to the sea, within the river corridor remains some of our oldest remanent vegetation left on the Adelaide plains (land from which the native vegetation has not been cleared).

These natural environments are home to many species of birds, bats, frogs, fish and possums just to name a few.

This historic river system passes through our region but unlike Gawler we only have a few locations that enable the community to access this river including Bakers Ford and Angle Vale Bridge.

But if you need wheel chair access to get around and want to enjoy one of nature’s natural wonders then you have to go to Gawler.

I hope that in the future our councils/ communities can work together with government agencies to make the Gawler river corridor accessible along its entirety similar to the linear paths along some of our states rivers systems.

Such as the little Para River and Torrens River. I believe the only way we can protect what we have, is if we learn to value them, and this can only be achieved, if we can access these natural environments.

That said my family member had a great time and asked me to mention what a great job Gawler council had done in keeping this reserve clean and free of rubbish.

My next family adventure will be at the only wheel chair friendly walking track within our region, Thompson Beach Southern trail.

This track offers people an opportunity to experience this unspoilt coastal landscape, which has been developed over time by volunteers.

for three minutes until light and fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing.

3. Add eggs one at a time, beating for 30 seconds each time, then add vanilla and mix for 10 seconds.

4. Whisk dry ingredients – flour, cocoa, salt, baking soda - and add to butter mixture, mixing on low speed until fully incorporated.

5. Add choc chips, hazelnuts (and cranberries), then chill dough for 10 minutes.

6. Spoon onto trays lined with baking paper (in the size you like!), and bake for 10-12 minutes.

7. Allow to cool on the trays for a couple of minutes before placing on a wire rack to cool completely.

n By TWBC secretary Irene Giannikos Another successful season has ended for the Two Wells Bowling Club.

The open gender Saturday competition saw the first side lose out in the last game.

It was a hotly contested division with six points between fifth and tenth positions with one game to go and they will be relegated next season.

The second side will be promoted next season after finishing second on the ladder and the third side will remain in the same division finishing fifth.

The Men’s Wednesday sides will remain in the same divisions and the Ladies Thursday team, after finishing third, will play in division one North again next season.

After the last game of the season the club hosted a barbeque and presented the club champions with their medallions.

Bailey Rafferty won the Women’s Singles Club Champion for the second year in a row and Doug Burford is the Men’s Singles Club Champion winner.

Ben Smith was too good for Richard Magiera in the President’s 2 bowl singles.

A very successful invitational tournament was played on April 14 with 28 teams from clubs near and far taking to the greens.

A bit of local knowledge helped, with two composite teams (each with three Two Wells players) taking out the honours.

New scrapes on par as golf season starts

Opening Day 1 Apr 17 Sponsor: Paul and Debby Shields The 2017 Two Wells Golf Season started with a good gathering of 17 men and 2 Ladies on Saturday.

Captain Paul Shields welcomed all on behalf of the president and vice president who were both working.

Paul acknowledged the efforts of all the members who were able to attend the two weekend working bees and achieved a great deal with cleaning up the course including the spreading of new sand on all the scrapes.

There were lots of other tasks identified by the course manager and the captain, which were completed to ensure the course was ready for the opening day.

Paul advised the members of the recent passing of Graham Applebee who played many seasons at the TWGC. New member Brett Betro was also introduced to all and played with Paul to get the lay of the course.

John Ball also passed on his best wishes to the members and wished them the best for the season. John, who is currently injured, will make his return in the next few weeks.

The first group consisting of Hans Linford, Danny Smith and Andrew Baker were watched by all as they hit off the 1st tee.

All received words of encouragement with their mixed array of shots.

A Grade was won by Paul Shields 34 pts with newcomer Brett Betro 2nd with 30 points, which for his first knock on Two Wells wasn’t bad.

Brett played quite well and managed to find a couple of our hidden gems which we have all landed in and as I stated to him good experience for future rounds. Andrew Baker finished 3rd with 27 pts.

B Grade was a close affair with Ian Gameau holding off Ian Smith on a count back, both with 41 points and 3rd going to Steve Kelly on a count back from Rabbit.

Other Results: H. Linford 33, I Clark 31, N. Bowden 30, G Payne 30, J. Weir 30, R. Prior 29, M. Hart 29, J. Spackman 28, C. Barker 22 and D. Smith 13 points.

Kathy Stubing and Leanne Brooks played with Ray Prior and Ian Gameau and gave the boys a chase for a while.

Kathy finished with 34 pts and Leanne with 29 pts. Word on the course is that we can expect the return of Gemma in the next few weeks.

Julie has also indicated she will pop down from her new home in Kapunda for a hit with the girls during the season.

The overall comments by the members on Saturday was positive with the new scrape covering as balls were staying on the scrapes and they smoothed quite well.

They will improve in the weeks to come.

Most importantly they are consistent.

With a few members still away the fields will increase in the coming weeks.

John had a solid 38 pts, which given his first look at the new scrape covering, is a great effort.

15 Apr 17 Sponsor: Paul and Debby Shields The day was quite warm for Easter and a great field of 16 players playing on the long weekend was good to see.

The course is still waiting for the

opening rain to generate that familiar green we are all used to seeing. Gary and John managed to oil up three scrapes during the week and they came up a treat with all commenting on the new surfaces.

Captain Paul Shields started slowly with a bogey and then turned on a golfing lesson for his playing partners with five pars and a birdie on the front nine for 22 pts despite the last two holes with only a point each.

Steve Kelly also massed 20 points on the front nine to establish a good

start for a solid round.

The back nine holes proved tougher for many with the winds but generally the course was playing well despite the hard surface.

A Grade was won by Paul Shields with a solid 38 points with Chris Barker, Ian Smith both on 34 points taking the minor placings.

B Grade was won by Steve Kelly finishing with 37 points with Ray Prior and Jim Weir the closest each with 31 points for 2nd and 3rd.

Eighteen players fronted to take on the challenge of the first Stroke round for this season.

The rain hopefully will kick start the fairways with a good coverage, just waiting for the rain and sun to work their natural magic.

The weather on the day was surprisingly warm and light winds throughout the day until later in the afternoon when the south easterlies sprung up.

A Grade was dominated on the day by newcomer Brett Betro who shot three birdies during the round to card a very respective round of 83/65 off the stick. Brett hit the ball well most of the day and like many found obstacles on the 9th and 16th.

He was also solid with his 25 putts, which means he is adapting to the sand scrapes.

Gary Payne also played well to finish 2nd with 88/68 off the stick.

John Ball finishing 3rd with 94/75 just in front of playing partner Bobby Hogg.

The Monthly Medal was won by Brett Betro.

B Grade was a close affair with count backs galore. Ian Gameau 89/67 holding off playing partner Doug Burford 96/67 to take out B Grade.

Jim Weir with 91/69 holding off good mate and playing partner Steve Kelly 91/69 on a count back for 3rd.

Again comments by members and watching some putting during the round proved that the club has moved forward to make the scrapes consistent.

With some topping up of some holes and oiling them they will be very good in weeks to come.

I saw several balls pitch in and hold which was promising for everyone.

Gary and John were again busy replacing the new cups on most of the scrapes.

Several photos have been placed on Facebook each week of the members I play with to capture the moments and provide history for the club.

Bobby Hogg was seen to be laying up on the 16th with his tee shot allegedly hitting a tree and coming back towards the tee block.

His playing partners commented it was a lay-up chip shot and not a hit tree to allow him to attack the fairway over the hill which he smashed like the A Grade player he is.

The 2016 Matchplay final result was played due to conflicting dates late last year between Hans Linford and Gary Payne.

Hans was successful and it wrapped up a very good season for him with his efforts overall last year.

Your Council is committed to listening. It is essential to know and to hear your views.

As part of this commitment, Council provides the opportunity for anyone to be heard in open forum for a period of up to 30 minutes at the beginning of every Council meeting. Not all councils do this and there is no requirement to do it. We do it because we think it helps us to do our job for you.

As is required of elected members and Council staff, residents who speak at meetings must extend respect and courtesy no matter how passionate or concerned they might be about any particular matter.

Unfortunately, there were complaints about the conduct of individuals at a recent Council meeting.

These complaints were investigated and considered

by Council’s Governance Advisory Panel, which comprises of three independent members, a legal advisor and two elected members of Council.

The Panel upheld the complaints. It determined that the individuals’ behaviour failed the required standards. The Panel recommended that Council’s Chief Executive Officer, James Miller, issue a public notice to make clear Council’s requirements.

A council chamber obliges all who attend to extend respect and common courtesy to fellow residents, elected members and Council staff.

Council will not tolerate behaviour or language that reflects disrespect. It insists on a safe and respectful environment in which to present views and air concerns.

Council, therefore, reminds all who speak at Council to be respectful of our community and mindful of the values that we share.

The start of the 2017 Adelaide Plains football and netball season means rising in the chill of winter, coats and umbrellas, muddy boots and soggy socks, hot chips and bacon & egg sandwiches…and football and netball games of course.

It also means relaxing post game with some fun and frivolity and Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club kicked off their social season with a Rubik Cube and iPod shuffle party on Saturday April 22.

The night involved revelers arriving wearing one item of clothing that is each of the colours found on a Rubik cube.

The idea was to swap clothes throughout the evening until the first full “Rubik cube” was found.

In conjunction with this idea revelers “purchased” songs, limited to 50, which were shuffled on the iPod and played, to enter a draw

to win $400 if your song was the last played on the night.

By all accounts the night was a hit and there were winners and grinners all round.

The music was loud and varied, the Rubik cubes came together, and everybody smashed it on the dance floor.

Maddy Seccafien picked the winning song to be played last, “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheetus, so she went home an even bigger winner.

In coming weeks the club’s social committee has on the cards a 60s night (June 3), a quiz night (July1) and a night at the races (July 29).

They’re also planning to stage a “Miss Two Wells” pageant in August (19th) so keep an eye out for more information about that one closer to the date.

Swim success for young Two Wells students In the pool, these two leave their rivals in their wake, and they absolutely love it.

Two Wells Primary School students Ben McFarlane and Keyan De Wet both saw success at the SAPSASA state championships held at the Marion Aquatic Centre in March.

Representing the Gawler and Districts region, Ben and Keyan, both in Year 7, brought home medals in a majority of their respective events.

Ben competed in the 12-year-old 50m freestyle, 4x50m medley relay, where he won gold, 50m butterfly and 4x50m freestyle relay, where he took home a bronze.

Keyan competed in the 13-year-old 50m backstroke and 4x50m freestyle relay, where he won gold.

The pair have been ‘following the black line’ since they were nippers and are both members of the Gawler Amateur Swimming Club, where they train each week during the swim season.

The 12-year-olds dream of one day wearing the green and gold for Australia and even perhaps of competing at the Olympics.

“If I get to the Olympics that would just be an all-time dream for me,” Ben enthused.

“Next season I’m planning to stop playing footy and focus on swimming for the entire year.”

Ben and Keyan will attend Gawler and District College next year and aim to continue pursuing their swimming dreams.
