Bailey bowls them over Bailey Rafferty made history at Two Wells Bowls Club last month when she became the first ever TWBC member to skipper a division 1 match.

History was made at Two Wells Bowls Club last month when 15-year-old Bailey Rafferty became the club’s first ever top division skipper.

Bailey, a state representative since she was 12 years old, lives in Munno Para West and along with her dad, Steve, has joined the red and white this season. The pair, together with first-year player Jarrad Langley and club veteran, Graham Goold, took on Gawler in the Metro 1 competition on Saturday February 20, with the quartet blitzing the opposition 30-14. Bailey has been playing bowls for the past eight years, saying it is a terrific sport that is a lot of fun.

“I like meeting new people,” she said with a smile. “The amount of people I have met through this game is just incredible (and) it’s a great game.

It’s very engaging. You have really got to think about the competition side of it.

“I also love being outside, plus I get to play with my dad, which is great.”

Currently a member of the South Australian Under 18 state bowls squad, Bailey has “rewritten” the history books according to TWBC president, Phil Devlin.

“Bailey is the first lady to play in the top division for Two Wells ever,” he said before the Feb 20 match. “So, that’s a feat in itself. And to be so young on top of that is a testament to her.”

Bailey said she loves the sense of camaraderie at the Two Wells club and believes the sport really is one for the all ages.

AFTER a well-publicised smear campaign Korunye derailed his mayoral ambition in the 2014 Lower Light local government elections, Two Wells’ Tony Flaherty has been voted in as mayor of the DisWard Belt trict Council of Mallala.

Lewiston Two Wells Mr Flaherty defeated Gawler Middle Beach acting mayor, Marcus Gawler Strudwicke, 788 votes River Port Gawler to 620.

Mr Strudwicke will remain as deputy mayor until November.

“I’ve also never had a problem with Marcus, in fact, when I was awarded Citizen of the Year, he said if I won the election we would be the same old team as before,” Mr Flaherty said.

“I’m looking forward to working with him, he did a wonderful job as acting mayor, particularly during the fires.”

Mr Strudwicke concurred.

“I’ve worked with Tony before and we got on quite well,” he said.

The campaign encourages participation three ways; local people can volunteer their time to fundraise on behalf of their local St John division, make a donation online or at their local Bendigo Bank branch, or put the fun into fundraise by daring a friend and spread the word, encouraging others to donate.

Monster mayhem Bec O’Brien reports: Students at Two Wells Primary School were thrilled when a monster dropped in to visit them last month – a monster truck that is.

In town for the Monster Slam held at Adelaide Showgrounds, the truck “Wicked” pulled on to the school oval where the eager kids had an opportunity to get up close to the massive vehicle.

Although the “monster” didn’t come off the trailer, the students were able to peer underneath it, touch the impressive tyres and ask questions.

Monster Truck transport driver, Charlie Hutchinson, explained to the students the $250,000 truck housed a Chevy motor with 1500 horse power, weighed 3.5 tonnes and could reach 120 kilometres per hour in the space of a little more than 30 metres.

Doris pays it forward

Doris Cooper, 61, was diagnosed with Leukaemia in March 2013 and underwent intense chemotherapy treatment for six months.

This month she will shave her head as part of the Shave for a Cure event on March 13.

“They are doing great things,” she said.

“They have been absolutely wonderful, I can’t thank them enough, they are really wonderful and if I can help them, then that’s

Many of Doris’ friends and family are also taking part in the Shave for a Cure event by either colouring their hair or shaving it off.

So if you see a “rainbow” of coloured hair around or a few more shaved heads than usual, give them a big smile and a thumbs up!

Grey Wolf Badge presentations On Tuesday February 23, Toby Trenwith and James Ford were presented with their Grey Wolf awards.

The Grey Wolf award is the highest award in Cub Scouts and is earnt by those who put the hard work in to attain it.

The awards were presented to the boys by the Branch Commissioner for Cub Scouts, John Kalaitzis, and the Assistant Branch Commissioner for Cub Scouts, Rob Lewer. The pair was delighted to present the awards and visit the Two Wells Scout Group.

In order to attain a Grey Wolf Award, Cub Scouts are required to meet certain criteria to attain it.

They must complete their standard award scheme and attain the highest Two Wells Echo, March, 2016

By Andrew Ashton, Two Wells Scout Leader level of three, the Gold Boomerang, an award that requires lots of hard work and commitment.

They must also have participated in four outdoor activities; one being an overnight camp; one an inter-pack activity (Cubs from another pack); one outdoor activity and a bush walk planned by the Cub Scout trying to get the Grey Wolf.

They must also attend two Pack Councils, where leaders and older members of the pack come together to talk about the pack.

They also have to complete four level 2 achievement badges.

The last thing is they need to develop

and present is a resource to the pack based on the Jungle Book.

2016 is a milestone year for Cub Scouts as it marks 100 years since the Cub Scout movement began, following its pre-predecessor, the Scouting movement.

In 1916 Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting movement, published his outlines for the new junior section for Scouting and called it Wolf Cubbing (later to be known as Cub Scouts).

Baden-Powell asked his good friend Rudyard Kipling if he could use his Jungle Book “universe” as a motivational frame for the Cub Scouting.

LABOR WILL MAKE MULTINATIONALS PAY T h e A u s t r a l i a n Ta x O ff i c e ’s Corporate tax transparency report for the 2013-14 income year, published in 17 December 2015, detailed the tax contribution of over 1500 major multinational and Australian public companies.

The report shows that one in four of these companies paid no tax despite earning over $100 million in revenue.

In the energy and resources sector 57 per cent of multinational firms paid no tax, while in the banking and financial sector the figure was 45 per cent.

Labor has a $7 billion plan to close tax loopholes and stop multinationals shifting profits offshore.

A Shorten Labor Government will ensure big multinationals pay their fair share of tax in Australia.

Tax deductions will be based on a company’s entire global operations, not just what they do in Australia.

Tax laws in Australia will be standardised with other countries so big multinationals can’t double dip.

$3000 for Blaze Aid from encore show

Sunday February 14 saw the Two Wells Melodrama Group stage a special performance of last year’s popular comedy musical “Great Questpectations” in support of Blaze Aid. The Valentine’s Day special attracted around 100 audience members with just over $3000 raised to help those affected by the Pinery Bushfire of November last year.

“The devastation of the Pinery Fire left it’s mark on a number of communities in the region, including Two Wells,” TWMG president, Lance Morgan said.

“Although we escaped the fire itself TWMG members were horrified to learn of the death of Allan Tiller on his farm at Pinery, which made his loss a personal one for the Arbon family, which includes Anne’s husband Robert, daughter Eleisha and son Hayden, all of whom have contributed enormously to past and current productions.

“Allan had never missed any TWMG production since it began in 1982.”

The Two Wells Scout Group was also involved in the one-off event, cooking a sausage sizzle before the curtain went up.

This year’s Melodrama performance will be again be held in May, so mark the 13th, 14th, 21st, 22nd, 27th and 28th in your diaries now.

More than 100 people enjoyed a free movie on the Two Wells oval on Friday February 12.

Settling in with their deck chairs, bean bags, rugs and pillows, residents of all ages snuggled down and munched on lollies, popcorn and home-brought snacks as Despicable Me 2 was shown.

The District Council of Mallala put on the outdoor venture, with movies also shown in Mallala on February 19 and again in Two Wells on February 26.

Each month the Two Wells Book Club will bring you a review of the book that had been read by the group the previous month.

The Book Club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library.

We hope you to provide you with an opportunity to engage with some books that you might never have thought to pick up and read.

This month’s book is a non-fiction piece called ‘Catherine’s Gift’ by John Little.

Dr Catherine Hamlin is the Australian obstetrician and gynaecologist who, with her husband New Zealander Dr. Reg Hamlin, cofounded the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, the world’s only medical centre dedicated exclusively to providing free obstetric fistula repair surgery to poor women suffering from childbirth injuries.

The author, John Little, spent 25 years working as a reporter and producer in television current affairs, before becoming a full-time writer.

He spent a considerable amount of time with Catherine in her Ethiopian hospital and penned the remarkable story of her life’s work.

‘Catherine’s Gift’ gives insight into the extraordinary world of Dr Catherine Hamlin, and follows the fate of some of the women who have travelled through unimaginable obstacles to Dr Hamlin’s hospitals in the hope of a cure for their fistula injuries.

It takes you inside the day-to-day experiences of her incredible staff, and the tireless work of Catherine Hamlin herself.

Whilst many members of the book club were left in awe at the amazing work of Dr Catherine Hamlin, many were unable to read through to the final pages.

At times the subject matter was difficult to stomach, and telling the story of the womens’ lives became somewhat repetitive.

All members were a fan of the story of Catherine Hamlin and found her life and her dedication to her patient’s lives uplifting, however the way the story was told left all readers feeling as if the book was not all it could have been. Next month’s book is ‘Small Bamboo’ by Tracey Vo.

Flying high in Lewiston Natalie Centenera reports: I’m not usually one for adventure.

I have no fears as such, I’m just not wired to seek adrenalin-pumping activities.

I admire those who get their kicks from extreme sports, but that’s just not me.

However, finding myself out of my comfort zone on the front lawn of Trish Morton’s Dawkins Road property in Lewiston has given me an insight into the exhilaration and sense of achievement thrill seekers carry with them.

Lewiston residents may have noticed something out of the ordinary appear a couple of months ago.

The only permanent flying trapeze rig in South Australia now sits at 195 Dawkins Road and is available for members of the public to push themselves to try something they wouldn’t normally try.

Local resident and school teacher of 20 years, Trish Morton, is the “wonder woman behind it all”, says Nick Armstrong, one of the instructors of the newly established TSAST, The South Australia School of Trapeze.

Trish joined the growing fitness phenomenon a few years ago attending cross-fit classes.

This lead to an interest in circus, then to the trapeze and finally the flying trapeze in May last year, which she had to travel to Melbourne to experience.

“I did it for a day and just loved it,” exclaimed Trish.

Upon returning home, she approached her friends in ZigZag circus to see if it was at all possible to erect a flying trapeze rig on her front paddock.

After measurements were taken and a rig was sourced, “it all seemed to come together, we didn’t have to struggle to make it happen,” Trish said.

There is a sizeable circus community in Adelaide, however the ability to experience and train on the flying trapeze saw many travel interstate.

“Trish was a woman with a vision,” says Alli Chambers, another member of the newly formed TSAST, “she made it happen.”

“What I would like to do is introduce as many people to the flying trapeze as possible,” says Trish.

“I was keen to bring something to the northern suburbs.”

Seeing the enormous rig and experiencing it first hand, one can appreciate the remarkable achievement Trish has pulled off.

She has created a team to assist her with her vision, and newly established side business.

“Ideally we’d all like to quit our day jobs if it means we can train for free”, laughs Alli who is a youth worker by day.

The TSAST team train together on weekends as well as instructing individuals and groups.

“The major thing about this venture was that I just wanted to fly on the trapeze,” says Trish enthusiastically.

“The whole business side just helps that.”

The team admire and respect her, and are grateful for the unique opportunity Trish has been able to create.

“We hope to put the trapeze in the Garden of Unearthly Delights at the Fringe Festival

one year,” she states.

“I’d also like to get high school students involved”.

“Experience is a great teacher,” offers Nick.

And I would have to agree.

After being taken through a practice run on the ground, I climb the slim ladder that I had been watching the team do effortlessly all morning.

The rungs of the ladder are skinny and surprisingly brutal on my shoeless feet.

I felt that was an achievement in itself and gave myself a silent pat on the back.

Once I reach the platform up high I take a look down and breathe in deeply.

Trish’s voice is soothing and I do exactly what she instructs me to.

“Toes over the edge of the platform, reach forward to grab the bar with one arm, now the other arm, don’t worry I’ve got you”, she encourages.

I bend my knees, get the signal and take a leap off the platform………

I really am flying, and it is a wonderful feeling.

Never having a bucket list, I mentally scribe one in my mind whilst swaying to and fro, and envision a big fat tick next to ‘Flying Trapeze’ written at the top.

I was meant to let go of the bar and land on my bottom or back, but I enjoyed the fall too much I forgot to move into position.

So I landed feet first and then fell on my face.

Apart from looking like the usually awkward fish out of water that I am so accustomed to, the net was unexpectedly forgiving.

I manoeuvred myself to the side of the rig to where Nick was waiting to help me climb off.

Once unharnessed, with two feet firmly on the ground, I could understand how this group of trapeze enthusiasts are so eager to spend more time with their feet off the ground.

I had, in a small space of time, experienced something out of the ordinary, physically challenging, yet incredibly exhilarating.

And I did just walk a little taller for the rest of the day.

ADSL internet waiting list grows RESIDENTS in Clare and Two Wells are facing long waiting times to connect to the ADSL networks in their towns with all available ports in use on their respective exchanges.

New Blyth Primary School principal, Marie-Louise Adams, moved to Clare recently and was told it could take up to three months before she could connect to the ADSL service.

Ms Adams was quite shocked to hear the waiting time was quite so long and was relying on mobile data to access the internet.

The situation is similar at Two Wells.

Two Wells IT owner, Neville Seccafien, explained it was simply a case of the infrastructure operating

at capacity and there was a waiting list to get onto the network when a port opens up.

Telstra area general manager, John Tonkin, confirmed the demand for ADSL was at capacity in Clare.

“Currently, the Telstra telephone exchange at Clare is currently operating at full capacity in terms of port availability and being able to provide fixed line internet services to local residents,” he said.

“Telstra upgraded the Clare exchange to provide more capacity in early 2015 and is currently investigating options to provide additional ADSL capacity in the local area.

“For Clare residents wishing to utilise ADSL broadband through Telstra in the future, we advise

they contact Telstra on 13 2200 and advise of their interest in obtaining this service.

“This then gets their name onto a waitlist and will be then first in line if additional capacity becomes available.

“When an exchange is upgraded to provide ADSL broadband, Telstra (or other providers) install equipment in the exchange that provides a certain number of ports.

“Once the ports are taken up, additional investment, sometimes significant investment, is required to increase the number of ports again and customer demand is an important factor in making this

investment decision.”

Mr Seccafien said he recently had 10 customers looking to connect to the ADSL service at Two Wells but were forced to join the waitlist.

The rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN) in various centres also impacts whether Telsta would invest in bolstering its local ADSL services.

“While the NBN rollout out is a consideration in Telstra’s upgrading of facilities, we continue to invest heavily in our ADSL network,” Mr Tonkin said.

“In the past 12 months Telstra has completed approximately 800 port relief projects across our Australian network alone, which have added over 200,000 ADSL ports to

the network.

“We have a further 550 more port relief projects planned to be completed by the middle of 2016.

“We continually assess demand to help determine where upgrades need to occur, and the NBN’s deployment plans for a particular area to help us determine where upgrades to our broadband infrastructure are most needed.

“In areas where the NBN deployment has been delayed, we are not always able to modify our investment plans to cover changes in their deployment schedule.

“The availability of ADSL ports on our South Australian network changes over time with both customer demand and with technical upgrades to our infrastructure.”

Dahlias are native to Mexico, Central America and Colombia with several different flower groups such as Anemone, Cactus & Pompon being a few from which to choose.

The colour range is vast with soft shades of pink, lilac and cream with stronger colours of red, purple and pink. n “Beware the Ides of March” was the warning given to Caesar, but for us it reminds us that St Patricks Day, on March 17, is the ideal day to plant Sweet Peas for a Winter and Spring display.

Sweet Peas need a trellis to scramble up preferably facing north, a good sunny

position with six hours of sunshine per day, and lots of organic matter incorporated into the soil so as not to let them dry out.

Tie them to the trellis to keep them upright for a start and G pick the flowers to keep a continuous display.

As the birds love the new tender shoots, provide cover for the first couple of weeks.

Roughen the end of the Sweet Pea seed where you see the white tip, then place them in a tub of warm water

overnight and plant out the next day about 5-7cm apart.

The McDougall family of Gawler are famous for their Sweet Peas and packets of seeds can be bought from garden centres or via the internet.

Dr Farrell joins top medical team Heritage Medical Centre has a new female doctor in Nicole Farrell, who started at the centre last month.

Nicole is a rural general practice registrar who is passionate about health and wellness.

She believes in supporting patients to achieve health goals through education, appropriate medication and enabling access to services.

“I am a strong supporter of preventative health and evidence-based medicine,” Nicole said. “My practice spans broad interests including women’s health, adolescent health, paediatrics and aged care.

“Aboriginal health and health education are another two areas of personal interest.”

A Canadian by birth, Nicole has lived in Australia for the past eight years.

She studied Medicine at Flinders University, Adelaide, after completing a Bachelor of Science in Animal Biology at the University of British Columbia in Canada.

“I spent my internship and RMO years at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital,” Nicole explained.

“I have worked in GP practices in Athelstone, Kapunda and Clare during

my training and am looking forward to the next 12 months.

“I’m really enjoying getting to know the Two Wells and Virginia communities.”

Outside of work, Nicole enjoys swimming, scuba diving, sewing and reading.

Her time will be split between the Virginia Medical Centre (Monday and Tuesday) and Heritage Medical Centre (Friday).

Nicole will also share her skills with keen Year 1 and 2 medical students at Flinders University on Thursdays, where she will lecture.

A new branch of one of Australia’s oldest serving volunteer-based groups was born in Two Wells last month.

The newly formed Two Wells Country Women’s Association group has yet to come up with an official name, but at an information meeting held on Monday February 22 to gauge interest, more than 25 women turned up, keen to establish an evening branch in the town.

On hand to provide information, answer questions and lead the discussion was CWA state president, Linda Bertram and CWA state treasurer, Janet Shane.

Linda spoke to those gathered about the role of the CWA and the kinds of activities the branch could be involved in.

She emphasised the importance of friendship, learning and helping the broader community.

“Your community here in Two Wells will be all the richer for having a group here,” Linda said.

“It’s exciting and wonderful to see so many people.”

While much is still yet to be decided the new branch has already elected a president, vice president, treasurer and secretary and will hold its first official meeting in the Hart Memorial Hall, Anglican Church, Two Wells on Tuesday March 15 at 7.30pm.

All interested ladies are invited to attend.

Clay’s consecutive Motocross titles

Two Wells has a star motocross rider in the making, with young up-and-coming local, Clay Burnett, winning back-to-back state titles.

If you follow motorsport you may have seen the 10-year-old, who attends Two Wells Primary School, tearing up the circuit as he raced his 65cc bike at venues across the state, including Ceduna, Murray Bridge, Renmark, Keith and Gilman.

Clay took out the 2014 South Australian Motocross Championships for 7-9 year olds and was recently named the 2015 champion for this age group again.

Clay also placed third in the 85cc 9-12 year old category for 2015 and is one of the youngest competing

in this age group.

However, he will leave behind his smaller powered bike this season and move on to the more powerful 85cc bike and older age category.

Clay first started riding when he was three years old and has been a regular competitor on the motocross circuit since he was seven.

He is a sixth generation motorbike rider who also plays football for Two Wells in the Under 11s.

A member of the Motocross Riders Association, Clay trains at home on a purpose-built track at least twice a week.

In recent weeks he has been beating his personal best time on

this track almost on a weekly basis, with his current PB standing at 1m 56 seconds.

“I just love doing this,” Clay said.

“I love hanging out with my friends and it’s a lot of fun.”

With his dad, Rob, by his side as pit crew, mechanic, doctor, nutritionist, taxi driver (the list is endless!), and the encouragement and support of mum, Vanessa, the young rider competes or attends clinics across the state almost every weekend.

Clay is aiming to participate in the National Motocross Titles when they are held in Renmark in September.

Horizon’s journeys of success HORIZON welcomed the return of three of its many successful graduates from the year 12 class of 2015 recently.

Their return to school was to spend some time with a few of Horizon’s newest members from the foundation class of 2016.

It is too soon for Lorena, Isla, and Harley to be asking, “Are we there yet?”

They have a long way to go in their learning journey at Horizon.

They are still taking their first steps into years of care-filled teaching, good friends, nurture and encouragement.

Theirs will be a rich journey.

It will be filled with wonderful experiences, important learning and lifetime memories.

Their dreams for the future might include being astronauts, airline pilots, police officers and nurses.

But it is great to know they will be encouraged to succeed and achieve their dreams.

For Chelsea, Gian and Joe, their ‘Horizon’ journey is at an end. Now they can look back fondly to their early days of schooling.

They know they have been successful and have gained entry to the tertiary courses of their choice.

Vocational Education and Training ‘Student of the Year’ 2014, Chelsea McPharlin gained entry to a double degree Bachelor of Primary Education/ Bachelor of Arts at Flinders University following her successful completion of year 12.

Chelsea can remember her first days at Horizon.

Reflecting on her Horizon learning journey, Chelsea said, “The teachers have been very encouraging and supportive. I have made good friends and have always enjoyed the opportunities Horizon has presented me with.”

Chelsea is excited about the next stage of her learning journey meeting new people and having new learning at Flinders University.

Horizon’s Dux of 2015, Gian Haasbroek is looking forward to the challenges of the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) degree at the University of Adelaide. Arriving from South Africa, Gian spent his high school years at Horizon.

He commented, “My teachers have supported me through my schooling to help me achieve my best.

Their passion for teaching has made it easy for me to enjoy my learning experience.”

Joe Ventra completed much of his schooling at Horizon.

Following his success at year 12, Joe will be heading to the University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes to study of Bachelor of Information Technology: Networking and Cyber Security.

Joe is following a personal passion in this challenging area of study. Joe said, “Horizon has a very friendly and supportive environment.”

These are some of the many stories of success.

In years to come we will look forward to celebrating with Lorena, Isla, and Harley as they too step into the next stage of their successful learning journey.

I was pleased to meet with locals at Listening Post sessions on 17th February at Two Wells and Dublin, and plan to offer more such opportunities to informally meet with me to discuss issues (dates TBC).

Donna and I enjoyed being in Two Wells on 27th February for the dedication ceremony of the Two Wells War Memorial Gardens. I commend the RSL on the quality of this War Memorial, one which so admirably demonstrates the community’s commitment to honouring those who have served and paid the supreme sacrifice.

Portfolio issues have taken up much of my time for the past four months, particularly as Shadow Minister for Planning charged with dealing with the Planning Development and Infrastructure Bill - a once in 25 years rewrite of legislation which has featured some 350 amendments (including 200 from the Government itself).

Proposed changes to recreational fishing size, bag and boat limits have also caused community concern, and I urge all to read the three papers recently released by the State Government for community consultation (including management options for King George Whiting in SA). Playing football, learning yoga, moulding playdough – sounds like a great way to spend some time at school.

Last month at Virginia Primary School these fun activities were all part of the school’s Healthy Body and Soul Day activities held on Monday February 22.

VPS deputy principal, Voula Pounendis said the day is part of the school’s ‘positive school culture building’, where groups of students across the year levels are invited to participate in a range of activities which promote emotional and physical wellbeing. Northern Exploring Dear Diary‌ with Jorge and Judith Centenera of Two Wells Last year my wife, Judith, and I travelled for six weeks through North America.

We spent the first half of our trip in the United States, catching up with family in L.A., visiting Las Vegas, Salt Lake City in Utah and then touring through Yellowstone National Park.

The weather was just right as we travelled at the end of May and throughout June.

Las Vegas is great.

Anybody who goes to Las Vegas will enjoy it as it has a holiday atmosphere and something for everybody.

There is lots of shopping to do, shows to see and people everywhere, and it is open 24 hours!

From Las Vegas we travelled to Salt Lake City, home of the Mormons, and took in the sights.

The beautiful Utah State Capitol building is a lovely sight and attracts many tourists.

From here we made our way to Yellowstone National Park, which is so large it resides in the three states of Idaho, Wyoming and Montana.

By taking a bus tour we had the advantage of a guide to explain the wonders and attractions.

Spending one week in Yellowstone National Park was lovely.

The Geyser hot springs was very interesting. Â

Millions of years ago this area was a large volcano that erupted, and can erupt at any time again!

After making our way back to L.A. we then embarked on the second part of our journey to Vancouver, Canada, also visiting family.

We drove to Alberta, passing through the Rocky Mountains.

The scenery here is very beautiful, and everything is very clean, it is also very easy to drive through here, although there is a scenic railway that can take you through.

The National Parks in Canada are all connected and a wonder to see, the weather was cold, and the air was crisp and clean.

We would recommend travellers to see and experience this country.

In Jasper National Park, we took a cable car high, the Jasper Sky Tram.

From here we could see six mountain ranges, the glaciers and rivers.

It was eye-popping beauty.

So too was Lake Louise in Banff National Park, which is the most photographed lake in the world.

The town of Banff is also a very nice picturesque place to stay, full of cafes and wineries.

We enjoyed this trip very much and are looking forward to our next trip.

Bakers Ford Wetland project Two Wells, Lewiston & Districts Landcare Group With Mark Webb

As a trainer/supervisor for Para Worklinks in Conservation Land Management, I had been working at Bakers Ford Wetlands through a work for the dole program (Government initiative).

We were targeting pest plants within the river system including Box thorn (lycium ferocissimum), Prickly pear (Opuntia spp), Olive (Olea europea) and Dog rose (Rosa canina) as well as removing rubbish dumped by irresponsible people.

As you can imagine the river supports an abundance of pest plants, and you could say “so what?”

Well these plants impact on the health of this river and on the adjacent properties that border the Gawler river system, in a number of ways.

Pest plants increase the cost of farming activities with many of these plants establishing within some of our prime horticultural properties.

This not only increases the costs of chemicals to eradicate these plants it also ends up costing us consumers more for their products and in some cases it is not cost effective to plant certain crops due to the direct cost to the farmer.

As witnessed from past events our river is one of the main drainage channels from the hills to the sea and we are all well aware of the increased housing developments happening up stream, including Gawler and surrounding areas.

The increased housing means that large volumes of storm water will be discharged into this river.

Our river is under threat now and it will only get worse if no land management decisions are made to address the environmental damage done by pest plants and rubbish.

Our trees within the river system, some of which are 300+ years old, are struggling as their massive root systems become exposed due to increased volumes of storm water and damage done by pest plants, which undermine the river banks which support these amazing trees. Many of these trees will fall over in the not too distant future; projects such as this can and do make a difference.

For these projects to happen a lot of work behind the scenes is necessary and in some cases good projects just don’t get started.

When dealing with government bodies nothing happens easy.

Many people knock the council and in some cases they may need it, but I must say during this project it would not have come about if it were not for the horticulture team at District Council of Mallala, especially Pam Drew and former mayor, Duncan Kennington.

Their resilience to ensuring this project gained the necessary approval, provided an opportunity to do some great work within our river corridor and create an opportunity for participants of this program to develop new skills and a greater understanding of the importance of protecting the health of one of our regions’ (states’) ecological hot spots, the Gawler river system.

One of the great things about this program is that we (rate payers of Mallala) pay nothing for this project to happen in our region.

As a land carer I believe landcare represents providing opportunities for communities to do great things in the protection of our dwindling environments, and this program was one of them.

Take a page out of these young readers’ books n More than 200 books were read by more than 20 keen readers who participated in the summer school holiday reading program “Summer Reading Club – Lost Worlds” at Two Wells Public Library this year. n Participants attended a special party at the library on Wednesday February

Angle Vale Football Club

Owls claim club of year recognition ANGLE Vale Football Club received significant acclaim earlier this year, when it was announced as the Sports Club of the Year at the Playford City Council’s Australia Day awards in January.

The recognition acknowledged the club’s huge progress, particularly in recent years, where its junior program had grown substantially on the back of excellent work from volunteers.

AVFC president, Trevor Spong, said the award came somewhat unexpectedly.

“We received a letter about two weeks before inviting us to the awards but that was all we knew at that point,” he said.

When the club was revealed as the winner, Mr Spong said it was a wonderful moment but also relatively terrifying, given he had not prepared a speech.

Report: Les Pearson “It was more recognition for the hard working parents and volunteers at the club, they do what they’ve got to do, along with the core committee, which is also really active in running the club,” he said, The notes for the award acknowledge the club’s efforts in providing an inclusive, family-orientated environment.

“Angle Vale Football Club has shown true leadership in being a family friendly club that promotes and encourages equal participation of both males and females of all ages.

“This club has grown significantly over the last 12 months, which is a testament to offering a sense of mateship and belonging on and off the field.”

After a lengthy hiatus, the club reformed in 1998, establishing junior teams to compete in what was the Central Districts Junior Football League.

Seniors teams were added in 2005, playing with the South Australian Amateur Football League.

With the closure of the CDJFL, junior teams from Under 6 to Under 16 played in the North East Metro Junior Football Association.

This year sees a new chapter in the history of the club, with affiliation to the Adelaide Plains Football League, with Angle Vale set to field A Grade, Reserves, Senior/Junior/Mini/MiniMini Colts in the APFL as well as age specific teams in the NEMJFA from U7s to U16s.

“Going into the plains will give us that continuum from junior football into the senior grades all within the same league,” Mr Spong said.

Ladies footy continues to grow ANOTHER of the many success stories at Angle Vale is its female teams, which have continued to grow and strengthen in recent years.

Steve Eaton coaches the Womens (Hooters) and U15 (Owlettes) teams.

Eaton is the uncle of Angle Vale star, Lesley Burrows, and was approached by several players to coach the group.

After going down by just one point in the grand final last year, the Hooters have been promoted to Division 1 of the SA Women’s Football League (SAWFL).

Eaton said the improvement came from the girls playing as a team.

“I had been encouraging them to play a certain way but it was only last year they made that commitment

and changed their attitude toward the game,” he said.

The club has landed a couple of handy recruits, Hamley Bridge’s Katelyn Rosenzweig amongst that group.

Rosenzweig played at both Angle Vale and the Bombers last year, and came runner up in the junior colts association medal.

But now out of junior

colts, she will commit fully to the Hooters this season and has already been put through her paces trying out for the SA under 18 team.

Eaton was confident the Hooters could make the step up in Division 1, their first game starting on April 9 but their first home game will be following the A grade match between Two Wells and Angle Vale on April 16.

We travelled to Parafield Gardens in need of a big win to keep the hope of a home final alive.

Lee Henderson ran out of partners on his way to his first 50, falling two runs shy. Adam Connelly took a couple of catches over his head while tight bowling from Dylan Wise (2 for 33 from 21 overs) and Travis Wake (2 for 27 from 16 overs) restricted runs while Two Wells fielded short as some players rocked up late due to food poisoning.

In the end Parafield Gardens fell 10 runs short just before tea on the second day. That night we were treated to a surprise wedding of past player, Ned Seccafien and StephanieAgnello.

With some of the oval still wet due to a damaged sprinkler system it made judging runs difficult for the home side having 3 batters run out in their innings.

Sharp catching from Leanne Pool gave Caroline Hardiman her first wicket for the season and one each to Heidi Bergen and Rebecca Pool kept the home side to 159 from 24 overs.

Two Wells didn't get off to a good start with the fading light, losing opener Megan Curry in the first over.

In the second week Two Wells did an excellent job of hitting the ball to a fielder on every occasion making run scoring hard and with the added pressure from Sandy Creek's bowlers swinging the ball, saw them manage 7 for 79 in response with a 40-run partnership to Rebecca and Leanne Pool.

Our last home game of the year and Travis Wake (5 for 14) took his first 5-wicket haul for the year to help Two Wells keep Eastern Park below 100 runs.

Strong batting partnerships between Will Hart (22), Corey Carter (62), Dylan Wise (63) and Jason Harris (40) ensured first innings points went our way after Eastern Park used 10 bowlers to take 9 wickets at the end of days play.

The second week started well for Two Wells with every bowler taking a wicket even my wife Caroline Hardiman, yes that’s right and to rub more salt into my wounds she took another one in the same over taking her yearly tally to three, making her a better bowler than me....for now.

Two Wells put Dublin back into bat after they had them all out for 42 runs in the 12th over.

Outright victory was denied though as Dublin batted the remaining 20 overs only losing 4 wickets.

Rebecca Pool took 2 wickets to surpass Renae Smoult as the leading wicket taker for the club.

Under 10s

The Salisbury North game for the Under 10s was abandoned on the 29th of Jan and the game on the 5th of Feb was a crossover bye however no scores were submitted.

February 12

Two Wells travelled south to take on North Pines 'Black' and had 3 players all retire not out from batting (H.Devlin, A.Leo and J. Presland) to finish with a total of 134 from 25 overs.

February 19

The last home for the Under 10s against Dublin had Two Wells post a total of 115 runs with R Leo top scoring with 28 runs.

There was four individual wicket takers during the Dublin inning with J.Presland, A.Daly, C.Barnett and N.Elliot all helping to restrict Dublin to 4 for 73 from 25 overs.

The club will put on a FREE barbecue so I encourage all junior, women’s and men’s players and their families to attended and bring a dessert if you like.

It would be a great way to end the season before the men’s play in the finals.

Report: Alan Ford Two Wells Scout Member Editor’s Note: The Australian Scout Jamboree is a massive scouting extravaganza, where thousands of Scouts from across the country, as well as from overseas, meet every three years and take part in a range of activities to build skills, friendships and knowledge as well as to have fun. Local Two Wells Scout member, Alan Ford, who attended his first Jamboree this year, gives an account of the 10 days he spent at the 2016 event:

B Grade was won by Bernie Greenshields on 40/50 and C Grade was won by Bob Thompson on 44/50.

On January 2, 2016, I, along with Sam, Zac and Jaz from Two Wells Scout Group, left just after 2pm on a bus from Greenwith with other scouts and leaders from Belair, Athelstone, Greenwith and Ingle Farm.

We travelled overnight with two stops, for tea and breakfast, getting to the campsite at Cataract Park, Sydney in time for lunch. We then set up camp, had tea and went to the opening ceremony, where we saw my favourite band, Justice Crew.

When we woke up in the morning, it was raining.

We ended up having to put pallets down under the tents so all our stuff could stay dry. It rained for nearly four days. We got sick of the rain.

Once the rain stopped, we had a fantastic time.

There was so much to do. Jamboroo was a water park and the funnel web was the best ride there.

You are on a raft with three other people and you go in a pitch black tunnel. You turn left and right about four times each and then a free fall on about an 80 degree angle for about seven meters, then you go in to a big funnel but you do not do a loop around the whole thing.

The typan was about the same as the funnel web but there is no funnel and no free fall but you pick up some massive speed, and it was really fun!

We also went into Sydney sightseeing, and did other water activities like snorkeling and water slides, circ du scout, which was juggling, trampolines, stilts and face painting.

There was also an adventure course, rock climbing, and the shed where we made a really bright torch. We got home at about 8 in the morning on the January 15.

My highlights on Jamboree 2016 were jamboroo, Justice Crew and the rest of Jamboree itself.

I had such a great time at the end that I can’t wait for the next jamboree to go again.

Lower North Gun Club held the first shoot for 2016 on Sunday January 31, with 17 competitors attending to get some practice in for the upcoming State Championships.

The first event was a 50 target Two Wells Medley, sponsored by Barry Duncan and Max Pontifex.

First place in AA Grade was won by Angus Tapscott with a score of 48/50 with Adrain Mattschoss close behind in second with 47/50.

A Grade was won by Andrew Winen with a score of 48/50, while second place

With 68% of South Australian road deaths occurring in rural areas, we need to keep reminding our mates to drive safely.

Yes, fellas spend more time behind the wheel, travelling greater distances at higher speeds, but if your mate’s putting himself in danger, it’s time to say, “Drive safely, Sugar Plum!”

Jack’s big week Local junior shooter, Jack Tapscott, aged 15, recently competed in the State Clay Target Shooting Championships held at the State Shooting Park at Virginia.

Held over three days from 5th to 7th February 5-7, the junior competition was of a high level and wind made shooting conditions quite difficult, resulting in some highly competitive shooting over the weekend.

Jack shot 230/250 for the weekend across three events, placing him in 5th position for the junior team.

He qualified for the junior postal team, which then shot off against each other to determine the final placing.

Jack and another 15-yearold, Jack Cullinan from Pooncarie near Broken Hill both shot equal first with 73/75.

They then had to have another shoot-off, with Jack Tapscott winning the sash for the State Junior High Gun Title.

His shooting also advanced him to 4th place in the team, missing out on a place in the junior team by

one point. He is now first reserve for the junior state team that will be competing at Wagga Wagga, NSW in April.

Jack also competed in the Central Zone men’s open team over the weekend to beat the Western and Eastern Zone teams in a bit of friendly rivalry.

Lower North Gun Club also had two women shooters, Sue Byrnes and Lisa Smith qualify for the Ladies Team and Rob Damin did some great shooting to qualify for the Men’s Open Team.

A lot of talent from a small club.

To top off a great weekend for Jack Tapscott, he was awarded the Junior Shooter Scholarship of $1000 at the presentation dinner on the Saturday night.

This is for all-round juniors who show dedication to their sport in all areas and is to assist them in the costs associated with shooting and encourage them to stay in the sport.
