Aussie Pride: Pic special, p10-12 Bec O’Brien reports: There were screams, there was laughter, even a few tears, and all for a German tennis player by the name of Angelique Kerber.

Having just won the women’s final of the 2016 Australian Tennis Open against champion Serena Williams on Saturday January 30, Kerber unwittingly threw the township of Two Wells into the spotlight.

Through a Tennis Australia initiative, Two Wells Tennis Club was paired with Kerber throughout the competition, with members supporting her through Facebook messages and watching her on television. A few local families also travelled to Melbourne where they were lucky enough to meet Kerber and voice their support in person.

Two Wells Tennis Club junior coordinator, Marie Tapscott was one of these people, saying the trip was amazing and it was a thrill to watch Kerber in action.

However, Marie watched the final with her family with a mixture of confidence and hope while visiting relatives in Port Lincoln.

“I had a feeling she would win,” she said.

“I’ve watched all of her matches and I knew if she could just upset Serena’s rhythm then she would have a chance, which she did.

“I’m just really happy for Angelique and of her achievement.”

Kerber’s win means Two Wells has been thrust into the spotlight of sorts, with the club expected to secure a trophy tour and celebratory party later in the year.

“I am on top of the world and I think it’s going to be a fantastic recognition of Two Wells and the club. It kind of puts us on the map a little bit.”

Marie’s phone has been running hot since Kerber’s win, with congratulatory messages from other local tennis clubs and friends across the country, as well as from media hoping to secure television and radio interviews.

Two Wells Tennis Club has around 60 members but Marie hopes the whole district will join in the celebrations.

“It’s great that the whole town has got behind this,” she said.

“Hopefully if we do get to have this party, I’d like to invite everyone in the town to come along and share in this celebration.” n Continued back page.

Women in the Two Wells area are being encouraged to join the South Australian Country Women’s Association (SACWA), with an information Elizabeth session for anybody interested in being part of an evening branch, scheduled for later this month.

SACWA state president Linda Bertram said the association had already received a number of enquiries about the information sessions.

“It’s been fantastic to see such enthusiasm from women in the area who are keen to join the association and enjoy the friendship, support, skill sharing and to contribute to a voluntary service organization to assist in the community,” Ms Bertram said.

“In recent years, interest in the SACWA seems to just keep growing, which is wonderful to see that the young women of today are keen to carry on what the CWA has been doing for more than 85 years.

“Members are keen to learn the skills of baking, crafts and a variety of other activities while sharing friendship and giving voluntary service to the community, which is still the foundation of the SACWA today.

“We’re finding that evening branches, where the regular meetings of the branch are held outside of business hours, are a great way to make sure these women can be involved in the CWA and still meet their work commitments.”

Two Wells resident and keen baker, Amanda Farr, will attend the CWA’s upcoming information session in the town and is keen to join the long-serving group.

One local who is enthusiastic about joining the group is mother-of-two Amanda Farr.

Amanda, who is already a keen cook, is eager to learn more baking tips and secrets, and gain confidence with sewing.

She is also hoping to see how practices of the past, like not wasting anything, can be revived and adapted to fit into

the lifestyles of today’s families.

“I think we should get back to basics,” Amanda said.

“We waste too much these days.

“If something’s broken we throw it away and go and buy something else.

“I’m conscious of the environmental footprint that we’re leaving now.

GROUND has been broken at the Eden development at Two Wells and the first residents are expected to move in at the end of the year.

The start of the civil construction earthworks at Eden is the first stage of the $1.225 billion Two Wells township expansion.

Developers believe the township expansion will create more than

3,000 regional jobs over the next 20 years.

Eden is one of two villages that form part of the expansion.

Managing director of Land Australia, a Hickinbotham Group company, Michael Hickinbotham, said he was pleased to see the development beginning to take shape.

“Earthworks are a great op-

portunity for the community to see that work is beginning and progress is being made at Eden. We aim to have the civil works completed by mid-year,” he said.

“Two Wells is about a 40 minute drive from Adelaide – close enough to offer city convenience and far enough to escape.

“We are pleased with sales and have sold 70 per cent of the first

release which includes large allotments ranging in size from 1200m² to 1.4 hectares.”

Stage one release has allotments available from 1500m² in size.

Eden is less than a kilometre from the historic Two Wells township and will feature six hectares of natural parks and landscaped play areas.

It will complement Land Aus-

tralia’s master-planned Liberty village, which will feature the proposed Lutheran birth-to-year-12 school.

“It’s been fantastic to work with the (Mallala) Council, the State Government and the community right from the start to ensure that the township expansion meets the needs of local people, the growing community and district,” Mr Hickinbotham said.

Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, said the changes had been made just in time for the dedication ceremony, on February 27, which could be attended by the Governor

General, Peter Cosgrove.

The ceremony is also significant as 2016 marks 50 years since Australians arrival at Nui Dat, Vietnam, and the Western Front in WWI.

Miriam’s back to school advice “School’s not the only thing out there”.

These are the wise words of quietly spoken 18-yearold Lewiston resident, Miriam Slattery, who completed Year 12 at Xavier College last year.

With thousands of students heading to school this first week in February - many for the first time, and as many yet for their last year of schooling – Miriam’s outlook helps to keep things in perspective.

The last year of school, much like the first year 13 years before, can have its challenges and everyone handles them differently.

For Miriam, being prepared, learning as you go and taking regular breaks from study all helped her get through the trial of completing Year 12.

She ended the year with an impressive ATAR (that’s Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) of 99.5, received a merit for Maths Studies and was awarded Dux of three subjects; Indonesian, Maths Studies and Maths Specialist.

Miriam was also runner-up dux for the subject of Chemistry. She will receive her Merit award at a special ceremony to be held at Government House on February 9 along with more than 900 students from across the state.

This year Miriam has enrolled at Adelaide University where she will study a Bachelor of Math Sciences degree.

“I like maths,” she said. “It makes a lot of sense. Everything you learn is always true.”

One of nine siblings, finding a quiet, settled place to study for Miriam had its challenges, but she says it pays not to let things get to you.

“There were some times when there were a lot of assignments that we had to get done at the same time,” she explained. Take a break when you need to. Go for a walk, catch up with friends. School is not everything.”

In recognition of her success at school, Miriam has received a one-year Adelaide University Principals The start of a new school year brings with it a myriad of emotions, for both children and their parents.

Embarking on the unknown takes an emotional toll on any person, whatever their age, whether it be a new school year or new job, and can take some getting used to.

Four and five year olds across the state took the first steps of their educational career on this month.

Some may have found it to be a welcome reprieve from years at home with their parents and raced to the school gate to make new friends and enjoy new experiences.

For many, however, the day would have seen them let go of their parent’s hand, holding back tears with a knot tightening in their stomach.

So what can we do as parents to ease young children into feeling safe and comfortable in their new environment so they can get the best out of their learning time at school?

“Often the first week of kindy is positive for children and it’s not until the second week that the children will become upset, separation anxiety sets in and they don’t want to attend the service,” Sarah said.

“In these cases it’s really important to resist the urge to not bring them in.

“Consistency is key, very rarely do we see separation anxiety continue for more than 3 to 4 weeks.”

“In all the years I have been teaching 98% of children settle in about 20 minutes.”

If your child is upset always let an educator know to help support you and your child to actually leave.

And if you are concerned throughout the day, Sarah says to give the service a call.

At the end of the day praise your child’s efforts by telling them that they were brave for staying all day.

Tell them you knew they were upset but they persevered and mention how proud you are of them for trying.

Locals register need for public transport service Bec O’Brien reports: Two Wells Regional Action Team is giving a thumbs up for public transport to the town, saying the region desperately needs this issue to be addressed in the very near future.

The volunteer-based group believes with the impending growth predicted for the township on the back of the new housing development north of the town, coupled with Virginia’s rapid expansion and the probability of the new subdivision at Buckland Park, residents will require the option of public transport.

TWRAT president, Bev Smith-Trim, says the lack of public transport in the area means people young and old are disadvantaged.

“With no public transport in Two Wells I’m concerned for older residents who no longer have a driver’s licence,” Bev said.

“The ability to access hospital or specialist appointments can be a problem at times.

“Also, with the shortage of employment in the local area, younger residents seeking their first employment may need to travel out of the district and public transport would be a necessity for many of them as they are unable to purchase a vehicle.”

“The ideal would be for a rail service to come out to these areas parallel to the interstate rail line,” she said.

“However we do not think the Government

(neither State or Federal) would consider that, even though it would be patronised by passengers who live in the towns to the north of this area.

“We do consider a reasonable bus service is now necessary for this area.

“We are just 40 kilometres from the city.

“This is considerably less than Aldinga and

Sellicks Beach which are over 60 kilometres out.

“Any consideration to commencing a service for this region will receive the whole-hearted support of this team of volunteers who work so hard for this region.”

Two Wells resident, Rob Heaslip, who has lived in the town for more than 15 years, believes public transport

in the district is only a matter of time.

Rob said having access to public transport would attract more people into the town.

“It’s inevitable really because eventually the town will grow to where it’s needed,” he said.

“People will buy here if they can see there is a public transport system.”

It is now more than two months since the devastating Pinery fire and the district continues to face many challenges as it comes to grips with the extent of grief and loss.

It is heartening to see positive signs in the recovery process but there is so much work to be done; only those living in the affected communities can fully appreciate the scale of impact. Whilst I have assisted constituents with specific issues such as asbestos concerns and tax rulings on insurance payments, I commend the ongoing work being undertaken by Vince Monterola and his team at the Pinery Fire Resource Centre in Gawler.

I also commend the District Council of Mallala for making available various waivers and concessions for its affected ratepayers. I have requested Treasurer Koutsantonis to provide similar, serious consideration for impacted property owners when invoicing for the Emergency Services Levy.

Across the State, It is timely to reflect on a year that has been challenging as we work to stem the flow of regional job losses. Late last year the State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall announced an Emergency Jobs Stimulus Package which includes cuts to business taxes, investment in job-creating infrastructure projects, and relief for families and households struggling under spiralling cost of living pressures.

With regional prosperity key to SA’s economic growth, my continued focus will be pushing for increased support for local business and industry, backing the hard working, innovative entrepreneurs in the regions, many of whom I have been privileged to meet.

For the Two Wells district, I am particularly interested in public transport infrastructure planning to accommodate projected expansion, and confirm I have written to Minister for Transport Stephen Mullighan twice requesting a briefing but have yet to receive a reply.

I also await clarification from Federal Minister for Communications, Senator Fifield, re the NBN Fixed Wireless Construction Plan for Mallala district (due for roll out this quarter), and how this construction can be extended to include Thompson Beach, Webb Beach and Parham.

I have also been pleased to meet with Two Wells Golf Club members on two occasions of late, to assist them with their future planning; and was honoured to attend the Australia Day celebrations at Two Wells Community Centre on January 26.

Vlahos joins cabinet with two portfolios MEMBER for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, was sworn in as one of two new State Cabinet Ministers at a ceremony at Government House in January.

Ms Vlahos has been appointed as Minister for Disabilities as well as Minister for Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

Peter Malinauskas took on Tony Piccolo’s vacated portfolios as Minister for Police, Emergency Services, Correctional Services and Road Safety.

Premier Jay Weatherill said the reshuffle provides South Australia with the best possible team to tackle the challenges that confront the State.

“This will be a year where the focus will be on implementing our plan to transform the state’s economy and both Ms Vlahos and Mr Malinauskas will have important roles to play.

“Ms Vlahos will be tasked with the important state-wide rollout of the NDIS, which will support more than 32,000 South Australians with a disability and create more than 6000 new jobs in the sector.”

I DON’T SUPPORT INCREASING THE GST Under the Liberals’ plan for a 15% GST, every single Australian will have to pay more.

For families already struggling to keep their heads above water that means their electricity, gas, grocery and all their others bills that are already hard to pay will go up.

It will cost you more every time you go to the supermarket.

It will cost you more to visit the doctor or go to hospital.

It will cost you more every time your kids need new school books, uniforms or the bill for the school fees comes in.

The consumption tax in the UK started at 10% and now sits at 20%.

No matter what guarantees are given by the Turnbull Government, if they put the GST up to 15% now, they will put it up even more in the future.

If the Turnbull Government gets their way, seniors and families will have to pay a 15% GST on everything all the while they are dealing with cuts to pensions and the Family Tax Benefit, the loss of the School Kids Bonus and a cut of $650 million to Medicare rebates on pathology and diagnostic imaging.

Eliza dreams big with help from her friends “Never give up on your dreams. It can happen,” says budding pilot, Elyzia Quin, 14.

The Quin family, from Nowra NSW, were able to enjoy a holiday of a lifetime in Adelaide and help Elyzia realize her dreams due to the generosity of the Two Wells and Gawler community.

Since the age of four, Elyzia has had a driving ambition to fly a plane and become a pilot.

Her grandfather, Skip Quin, was a pilot for the United States Army during the Vietnam War and is no stranger to the commitment and dedication required to fly an aircraft solo.

Elyzia joined the Air League at six years of age and then the Air Cadets in Nowra at 13, proving to her family that she was serious about achieving her childhood ambitions.

Her grandmother, Jenni Quin, joined the Pilots Lounge Australia (PLA) Facebook page approximately 12 months ago to source information on how she could help her granddaughter turn her dream into reality.

Elyzia, and her four-year-old sister Madi, were saved from a life of adversity that no child should have to endure by their grandparents, Jenni and Skip, who re-evaluated their retirement plans to raise their two granddaughters, whilst both on pensions.

Pilots Lounge Australia was set up by recreational pilots for fellow pilots and other aviation enthusiasts to share information, photos and experiences about flying.

It was through this forum the Quin family came to know the PLA administration team and local Lewiston residents, Stuart and Karen McColl, whose love of aviation and their beloved plane Flappy Bird, saw them eager to support Jenni with information on how she could go about starting Elyzia’s flying career.

“They opened up their arms to us,” says Jenni, “not long after telling our story, they wanted to sponsor Elyzia.”

Through sharing information a rapport was built, and after chatting with Jenni on the phone,

Natalie Centenera reports: Stuart and Karen “thought it would be nice to do something for the whole family”.

They set out to raise enough money to bring the family to Adelaide for a holiday and support and encourage Elyzia’s love of flying.

Donations were sought, raffles and lucky squares were held, and Karen hosted a Postie Fashion Parade.

It was not only the PLA members that pledged donations, the Two Wells RSL came on board after being approached

by Karen, and were able to raise considerable funds for Elyzia’s flying lessons.

The RSL came back from their yearly break early on Friday January 15, opening up for the night so that members and the broader community had a chance to meet Elyzia and her family.

“They opened especially just for that night, which was really awesome,” 14-year-old Elyzia said, who was amazed and appreciative of the generosity shown by everybody.

“Anything that we can do to help, we do, that’s what we’re about,” vice president of the

RSL, John Atherton, stated.

“And we haven’t finished here yet, there’ll be ongoing support from us in the future.”

The family stayed in Stuart and Karen’s home for a week in January, with much of the money raised going towards their fuel, accommodation at Hay, and food whilst out sightseeing.

The family visited Glenelg, Port Adelaide and the Gorge Wildlife Park, who kindly donated a pass for the family.

With the support of the Adelaide Soaring Club Committee at Gawler Airfield, Stuart and Karen hosted a Fly In/ Show ‘n’ Shine event on Saturday January 16, which was another opportunity for Elyzia and her family to meet and spend some time with members of the PLA and Adelaide Soaring Club whilst they were here in Adelaide.

Elyzia was taken up for a fly in a member’s aircraft and was given the honour of presenting the prizes for the day, handcrafted trophies which were made and donated by PLA member, Tim Heylbut.

The Quin family were left stunned after Elyzia was gifted with a laptop computer from PLA member, Brett Vaughen of Quick Fix computers in Victor Harbour, to assist with her

schoolwork and in applying for flying scholarships.

Another PLA member, Dave Jonkers, announced the following day he would be taking Elyzia and Jenni on a joy flight to Aldinga for lunch, followed by a 500-foot coastal watch from Moana to Outer Harbour and back into Parafield airport, showing Elyzia general flying procedures like routine checks and communication with towers, “basically showing her what it is like to fly amongst the big boys,” Dave said.

An overwhelmed Elyzia struggled to hold back her tears whilst giving a heartfelt thanks.

Four-year-old Madi was given a sterling silver engraved bracelet from all the members of PLA, as a special memento of her holiday in South Australia and “Jenni and Skip were able to get a bit of a break and spend some quality couple time together,” Karen added.

A clearly emotional Quin family were blown away by the experience.

“Most of the people here didn’t even know us, and they’re willingness to help has left me speechless,” Jenni said.

“Absolute strangers have come forward and given financial support for her flying future, and from the other side of the country.

“It’s amazing stuff.

Karen said it was a great and humbling experience for her family and members of the PLA to be able to support Elyzia realise her dream of becoming a pilot and meet her family face to face.

“We would like to thank all the people who bought raffle tickets, lucky squares, supported the Fashion Parade, the Two Wells RSL and all the PLA members for their support in making the week a holiday that Jenni, Skip, Elyzia and Madi will always remember and be able to look back upon,” she said.

Towns shine with festive cheer Natalie Centenera reports: Local residents of the Two Wells/ Lewiston area were treated to a wonderful light show over the Christmas period.

The lighting show was professionally put together by Dave Brown, a retired electronic engineer, and saw thousands of lights choreographed to music that could be tuned into through a car radio on 94.3 FM. The show ran each evening from 8.30pm till 11pm and families could be seen pulling up alongside the house at 40 Dawkins road throughout those hours to enjoy the free spectacle from the comfort of their own car.

Dave admits that for a good many years he had been hanging store-bought Christmas light strings and icicles.

“But trying to synchronise half a dozen strings to do the same thing proved to be very frustrating”, he said.

“I figured that it couldn’t be too hard to solve the synchronisation problem so I went searching on-line.

“It turns out that there’s a large world-wide community of Christmas lighting enthusiasts - the Australian contingent can be found at auschristmaslighting.com where there’s an active discussion forum.

“It’s there that I learned about animation, the art of synchronising the lights to music.

“My search for a simple solution turned into a serious hobby, building a far more extensive display than I’d originally envisaged.”

The display grows each year, with Dave adding extra music to the show.

“I like Christmas lights”, he says.

“I like the technical and artistic challenges.

“The joy it brings to others, especially the kids, is a very satisfying bonus.”

An emotional, moving and at times funny Australia Day ceremony in Two Wells on Tuesday January 26 reinforced the strength of community spirit in the district as the South Australian Country Fire Service was honoured for its efforts during the devastating Pinery bushfire last November.

In front of a packed Two Wells Community Centre audience, longtime Two Wells resident, local RSL president and volunteer, Anthony (Tony) Flaherty was named as the District Council of Mallala’s Citizen of the Year, with Tony using the opportunity to urge all residents to work together to help each other better the community we live in.

Representatives from the Two Wells, Dublin and Mallala CFS brigades accepted the DCM Community Group of the Year award on behalf of the CFS, with the address by Two Wells brigade captain, Adam Harris, Dublin brigade captain, Rosemary McDonnell, and CFS Light Group officer, Phillip Earl, leaving hardly a dry eye in the house.

A standing ovation was given to the volunteers as they left the stage in what was and still is, a clearly emotional experience for them.

The Dublin History Group was awarded the project of the year for its Dublin Schlodder Shelter upgrade, which comprised more than 130 hand-drawn tiles and the overhaul of the historic shelter.

Leading official proceedings for the morning was DCM acting mayor, Marcus Strudwicke, who highlighted Australia Day as the perfect opportunity to appreciate all that is unique Two Wells residents, Adam and Chantel Harris with their children, Carla and Blake.

Local resident, Nigel Zilys, helps Australia Day ambassador and former Curiosity Show presenter, Deane Hutton, on stage.

“Australians are proud of having survived as a nation following the cruelty of wars, depression, drought and flood,” Mr Strudwicke said.

“As a result of this rich history, today we stand with other strong democracies to help defend and protect our hard fought freedoms.

“People of all backgrounds and religions strengthen our country and only together, united will our future be as strong as our present and past.”

Mr Strudwicke invited Australia Day ambassador and science enthusiast, Deane Hutton, of The Curiosity Show of the 1970s and 1980s, to the stage.

Mr Hutton spoke with humour about his family’s migration to Australia, saying anything is possible if we follow our hearts, never give up, and turn opportunity into action.

He even did a quick science experiment, plucking Nigel Zilys from the crowd to help him onstage.

Concluding the official proceedings was a citizenship ceremony for three local residents.

After living in Australia for less than 10 years each, Virgenia Liddle, Ellen Stoici and Jennifer Skipper, were invited to make the pledge to become an official “Aussie”.

A big thumbs up to the volunteers of the Two Wells Red Cross, who cooked up a delicious Australia Day breakfast of sausages, bacon, eggs, baked beans and toast, washed down with tea, coffee and juice.

Accepting the award for Community Group of the Year on behalf of the South Australian CFS were Marcus Vonzieden, Adam Harris and Rosemary McDonnell with Mayor Strudwicke.

Take a look around your garden to see if you need some summer shade, both for your garden and your house, and think about planting a tree, or trees, in the coming autumn season.

Take into consideration the alignment of nearby power-lines and underground pipes, and ask yourself if the tree will eventually overhang the roof and gutters.

A good website to go to for research is plantselector.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au, which has a comprehensive list of shrubs and trees for each council area.

Visualise how tall and wide the tree will grow.

A shady tree gives some wind protection and is especially cooling on the hot summer days as water evaporates from the leaf surfaces.

Take some photos and superimpose a fully grown tree on the photo and remember also- what goes up and out needs something underneath to support it, so remember your foundations.

Last year our very own ‘Open Gardens South Australia’ was established and on February 6 and 7 a unique garden, ‘Joe›s Connected Garden’, will be open at 5 Argent St Elizabeth Grove.

This amazing garden is a veritable cornucopia with an amazing variety of approximately 500 trees growing in four connected back yards.

There will be well known Adelaide speakers from the gardening community and on the afternoons a Q&A panel will occur with the garden owners and other guest speakers to listen, learn and ask your own questions.

All the proceeds from the garden owner’s share will go to the Pinery Bush Fire Victims via the Vinnies Charity.

A garden with a difference, which is well worth a visit.

A flowering shrub to plant for February colour is the humble Plumbago.

Plumbago Auriculata could certainly find a place in our northern gardens with colours of white, pale blue or a deeper shade of blue giving three pretty choices.

Rugby Rep Congratulations to Two Wells teenager, Connor Moore, 15, who was recently selected in the South Australian Under 17 Rugby Union team. Connor was previously a member of the state’s Under 15 team, and will now compete as the youngest member of the 29-member U17 squad. The team heads to New South Wales later this month to take part in the national Junior Gold Cup, with Connor training up to three times a week for the competition. Best of luck Connor.

Many degrees of love Wedding Bells Ben Spiteri and Kirralee Rosewarne of Lewiston were married on Saturday December 19, 2015 on a sweltering 43-degree day.

The ceremony was held at 4pm on the lawns of Glen Ewin Estate in Houghton, in the Adelaide Hills. The couple met back in 2007, introduced to each other through a mutual friend from high school. They became engaged on Christmas Day 2010, after dating for three years.

Ben, who grew up in Lewiston, is the son of Emanual and Dianna Spiteri. Kirralee grew up in Balgowan on the Yorke Peninsula and is the daughter of Stephen and Sharon Rosewarne.

Tim Spiteri and Michael Abdilla were best ‘men’ and Lisa Cocks and Koby Paxton were the two maids of honour.

Anthony Spiteri, Doug Spiteri and Gennaro Panella were groomsmen and Melanie Rosewarne, Kylie Rosewarne and Aimee Panella were bridesmaids.

As we head into the last month of summer, Two Wells resident Judy Heaslip shares with us her popular carrot salad. Judy says she has been making this easy salad for around 40 years and it’s a great one to make in advance and store in the fridge for when needed. Judy loves using locally grown carrots for this recipe and is regularly asked to bring her salad along to functions throughout the year. Using a V slicer and storing the salad in a glass container are a couple of Judy’s tips for this tasty salad. So if you’re planning a BBQ over the weekend, why not give this simple recipe a go?

Robots, gadgets and gizmos!

School aged children enjoyed an afternoon workshop of robots, gadgets and gizmos, as part of the Two Wells Public Library’s school holiday program held in the Uniting Church Hall.

The Hudson family from Ingle Farm, have always loved robotics and technologies.

Mum Anthea, Dad Carl, son Jamie, and Grandfather Athol, ran a hands-on workshop with their collection of different robots and gadgets on Tuesday January 19.

Those children in attendance benefitted from the family’s knowledge of robotics and were exposed to a variety of different technologies.

They were able to operate most of the machines on display, apart from the ‘Pod Copter’ or drone, which proved to be difficult indoors, even for experienced operator Athol, who crashed the machine into the wall

and put a small slice in the church hall’s curtains.

It was all up from there, however, after attendees were split into three groups and made their way patiently around to various activities, taking turns in having fun and gaining knowledge of how things work.

A ‘bot war’ was fought between a remote controlled Homer Simpson and another robot, while two robot dinosaurs had a dance off.

A line tracer robot showed how it uses infrared light to travel by tracing a drawn line on a piece of paper.

Music was created by wiring cutlery to a computer and using the static electricity of our own bodies to create a sound, and solar powered gadgets were fired up by shining an electric light on their panels.

After an interest had been sparked it was time to switch off and head home to a house full of technology, gadgets and gizmos, but lived in with a new understanding and appreciation of how things work.

Dedication Ceremony Two Wells War Memorial Gardens On Saturday 27 February 2016 the Two Wells RSL will be hosting a ceremony for the Dedication of the Two Wells War Memorial Gardens.

Good victory over Clearview Results for Metro Div 4 – January 16 The Two Wells team had a good win over Clearview, 68 shots to 40 and gained the maximum number of points 12, because all three rinks won.

Saturday’s Open Gender Pennant teams were doing well with the Metro Division 1 side on top of the ladder, two games clear of second placed Salisbury.

Metro Division 2 side was struggling a little but is was creditable sixth and the Metro Division 4 side was second on the ladder and doing well.

The Thursday Ladies Pennant side is struggling, however, they have managed three wins for the season.

The Two Wells Bowling club is hosting a dinner on Saturday February 13 at 6.30pm, with a mini quiz and karaoke, $10 per person.

Tuesday Twilight bowls is being well supported, however we can always cater for more.

It is more about having fun, meeting people and getting active, than winning!

Having said that, there is always some friendly rivalry and banter on the go.

Ted Jaeger runs the event and if you get there at 6.30pm, flat soled shoes, or no shoes, $7 per person you will be ready to go at the 7pm start time.

Ted is ably assisted by Des Jones behind the bar and Richard Magiera and his crew on the barbeque.

Netball trials set to begin Report: Bec O’Brien While it may feel like winter is still months away, trials for this year’s Two Wells Netball Club teams are set to begin.

Following a registration night at the courts on January 21, the first trials for those wishing to play in the senior grades this year begin on Thursday February 4 at 6.45pm and run for three weeks.

A junior netball registration night will be held at the courts also on Thursday February 4 from 5.30pm until 6.30pm.

Gossy’s 114 runs a highlight in new year opening match Report: Devon Hardiman TWCC president I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays; unfortunately the last game of the season for the men’s side was abandoned due to hot weather, which reduced the numbers for the end of year function.

[9 Jan] The men started the new year with a bang against ATCO with a solid opening stand from Will Hart (43) and Corey Carter (49), but the highlight of the day was the big hitting, 58 ball, 114 runs Lachlan Goss hit, with eight hit over the boundary and eight hit past the cones. Dylan Wise and Joshuah Osborne were influential with the ball both taking four wickets, giving Two Wells an 84 run victory.

[16 Jan] Next stop for the men was North Pines, where Lachlan Goss fired up with the ball this time, he was chasing another five-wicket haul, however was dropped behind point in his last over of his spell.

other three wickets thanks to Travis Wake’s two catches. North pines finished with 180 and the total was chased down Will Hart falling two runs shy of his century as the team needed only 1 to win and he needed three runs for the 100. What a team player he is not worrying about individual efforts and trophies.

[23 Jan] First home game of the year and it turned out to an absolute cracker. After Two Wells were in control for the first 10 overs, looking to score beyond 200, however, a few shady umpiring decisions and stump to stump bowling restricted us to 118 in 29 overs. The game looked well and truly over when we came back from drinks and Salisbury north was none for 46 with wickets and plenty of overs in hand to make the total. Corey Carter came on and just bowled on the stump letting the batsmen make all the mistakes. Once he took his fifth wicket Salisbury north needed eight runs with three wickets in hand off the last over to win and the first ball of the over Dylan Wise

took an unbelievable running diving outfield catch to start off the hat trick, that’s right a hat trick…the last three wickets earning Corey Carter figures of eight for 14 off 6.3 overs.

[21 Dec] The women hosted Rose and Crown just before Christmas; Heidi Bergen batted for the entire innings for her 16 runs and Rebecca Pool made 10 runs to finish with 3 for 63 after their hour at the crease. Rose and Crown must have had some Christmas shopping to do because they made the runs in nine overs with Renae Smoult taking the only wickets that night.

[11 Jan] With the absence of Heidi, Leanne Pool helped open the batting against Central United with a top score of 13. Her daughter, Rebecca and Caroline Hardiman had a 22-run partnership to push the total to 64. Once again, Renae Smoult took the only wicket for the innings with Central United making the runs in 13 overs.

[18 Jan] Another away game for the women took them to North

Pines and they had a great start only losing their two wickets in the last over of the innings. Heidi Bergen (44) and Megan curry (16) had an 87-run partnership. Poor Megan seemed to hit the ball to the fielder every time so she battled for her runs. For the third week in a row Renae Smoult took the only wicket for the game, which saw her become the leading female wicket taker for the club.

[25 Jan] With Sandy Creek having a turf pitch we travelled to Williamstown and with sharp fielding, which resulted in three run outs, saw the home side make 155, wickets going to Rebecca Pool and Caroline Hardiman.

[15 Jan] It was good to hear the under 10s got their second win of the season against Dublin with Harrison Devlin retiring on 29 and Alex Daly not out on 18, he completed the innings with the team total on 122. Dublin lost their last wicket in the 23rd over for 71. Young J. Presland took two wickets.

[22 Jan] It was a heart-stopping

end to the game against Angle Vale with Two Wells falling two runs shy. Chasing 123, Barnett and Daly got them off to a good start but in the end it was just a little too much.

These boys have come a long way since they started back in October. It is a credit to the coach, supporters and volunteers who come out every week and help the boys. I hope they keep working to hone their skills and let’s hope we can see bigger and better things next season. The future is bright.

The council cinema will be hosted by the cricket club on February 12 and 26 at 8pm. I'm not sure what they are playing but I’m sure it will be a great night. The canteen will be opened with hot chips, hot dogs and popcorn. I must remind parents that this is an alcohol-free event by the council.

Also the cricket is hosting another poker night on February 19 at the clubrooms. Get there at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. I hope to see you there; I’m the guy behind the bar due to my terrible poker face.

Lower North Gun Club held its Christmas shoot on Sunday December 20 with 29 competitors attending from 14 clubs across South Australia and Australia including Townsville, Monarto, Alice Springs, Elsewhere Gun Club (Jamestown), SYP, Pt. Augusta, Mid North, SAGC and International.

Competitors shot a fun program of three events combining shooting, pool and darts. The canteen ladies provided a free Christmas lunch and shared a glass of bubbles afterwards to celebrate a great year!

The first event was the 25 target Xmas Handicap sponsored

by Loretta Aikins who donated turkey, duck, hams and all sorts of Christmas goodies.

Bob Cook took first place with a perfect 25/25.

Second place was won by Vince Bone with 33/34, third place was Garry Read with 32/34, followed by Dino Oliviero in fourth place with 30/32 and fifth place was won by Des Mills on 24/26.

The second event was the 30 target Point Score Christmas Challenge.

The winners of this event had obviously been practising their pool and dart skills!

In this challenge points are allocated for a combination of shooting, pool and darts. First place was won by Wally Clarke with 106.

In second place was Barry Duncan on 105 and third place was taken by Adrian Mattschoss

The winners of this event were once again treated to high class prizes sponsored by Loretta Aikins.

The final event for the day was the 25 target mixed metre where 5 targets are shot at 11, 15, 18, 22 and 25 metres to make it increasingly more difficult.

This event was sponsored by Barry Duncan and Max Pontifex who donated bags of Charlesworth nuts and chocolates.

First in AA Grade was Vince Bone on 39/39 who just pipped Craig Bentley who shot 38/39 in a shoot-off.

Third was won by Des Mills

Local junior shooter, Jack Tapscott won Junior High Gun for the day, as well as Junior Club Champion for the year.

by Greg Tapscott with a perfect 25/25.

Sue Byrnes took second place with 22/25 and third was won by Bruce Baker on 26/31.

There were no B grade shooters, so first in C Grade went to SA’s youngest up and coming shooter Molly Bretag with a great score of 19/25.

Molly beat John Ward on 19/26 and third place was won by SA’s oldest shooter Bob Thompson on 19/28.

Junior High Gun was won

by Jack Tapscott with a score of 133/140.

Veterans High Gun was won

by Bob Cook also with a score of 133/140 and Overall High Gun was won by Craig Bentley on 137/140.

To wrap up the end of another great year of shooting, the Junior Club Champion award, sponsored

by Bob & Linda Andrews of Mundulla went to Jack Tapscott with a score of 9/11.

The Aggregate Club Champion award sponsored by John and Sue Byrnes of Waikerie went to Adrian Mattschoss with a score of 17 points.

Congratulations to all the winners.

The most recent was on Sunday January 31 and was a great warm up shoot for the State Shooting Championships on February 4, 5 and 6 at the International Gun Club.

Two Wells cheers for Angelique Report: Marie Tapscott

Two Wells was the official town to cheer for number 7 seeded player Angelique Kerber who took out the 2016 Australian Open Women’s title against six times champion Serena Williams on January 30.

Two Wells Tennis Club joined with Tennis Australia last year to be a part of their Free Tennis Days initiative.

Two successful ‘Come and Try Days’ were held during the October school holidays with around 30 children attending each day.

For every verified person who attended the days, Tennis Australia awarded the club one point, then in December 2015, the leader board was calculated and Two Wells Tennis Club was ranked 18th in Australia out of 256 towns.

A great effort for such a small club!

Two Wells Tennis Club was then matched up with an Australian Open player and because of our high ranking we were assured a top seeded player.

The tennis club members were excited to discover we would be cheering for Angelique Kerber of Germany.

The club and members have been supporting her via Facebook and by watching her matches on television.

Five lucky local families made

the trip to Melbourne to experience the Australian Open with great hopes to watch or even meet Angelique.

We all turned out to be very fortunate.

The Esposito and Spurling families arrived early in the tournament and junior player Evie Spurling scored a photo moment and autograph to treasure.

Later in the week, the Bentley, Damiani and Tapscott families along with Diane Meaney met up at the Garden Square where all the action is and did a group photo with Tennis Australia representatives.

By pure luck, Diane Meaney and Marie, Jack and Airlie Tapscott were able to watch Angelique’s Round 2 match against Alexandra Dulgheru from Romania where she won in two sets 6-2 6-4 in the Margaret Court Arena.

The next day at the practice courts, Amber Day and Airlie Tapscott met Angelique and there was great excitement when they both got her autograph.

As a result of Angelique’s win Two Wells Tennis Club will now receive prizes and benefits from Tennis Australia, including a visit to the club by a well-known noteable Australian tennis player (as yet to be announced), who will bring along the Women’s and Men’s trophies.

So it’s exciting times for the club.

Angelique beat Serena in the final in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
