• A man has been reported for drink driving after being caught Sunday evening. Just before 5pm on Sunday, December 13, police stopped a car driving on Daniel Road, Long Plains. The 54-year-old driver from Hamley Bridge recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.152.

The man was issued with a 12-month loss of licence and his car impounded for 28 days.

He will appear in the Port Pirie Magistrates Court at a later date.

• A 32-year-old man from Two Wells was reported for possessing prescribed equipment and possessing cannabis.

• A 28-year-old man from Lewiston was reported for drink driving, recording a test reading of 0.153. He received a 12 month loss of licence and his vehicle was impounded.

• A 48-year-old man from Thompson Beach was reported for drink driving, recording a test reading of 0.175. His vehicle was seized.

Mayor: Challenges ahead for DCM THE resignation of District Council of Mallala CEO, Katrina Marton, once again casts a blanket of uncertainty over the organisation.

DCM acting mayor, Marcus Strudwicke, has moved to clarify what council’s vision is and how Ms Marton’s approach differed from council’s expectations.

Mr Strudwicke explains council’s vision and the challenges council faces in the short term future in the wake of Ms Marton’s resignation.

“Details of the resignation are currently confidential until it comes to council on December 21.

At that time, if there were any financial implications, they would become public information.

I will always take up any opportunity to elaborate on the council vision.

It is perhaps not so much the vision as the capacity to communicate the vision, which is important.

The opportunities of our district are well known.

We have recently seen the launch of the Eden development in Two Wells and the new B12 school that will expand education options for residents across the district.

The growth of horticulture, and particularly hydroponics, has been dramatic over the past half dozen years.

Our broad-acre farmland, some of the state’s most productive, continues to deliver greater yields through increased efficiencies.

Our coastal assets, unique river deltas and often under-appreciated samphire flats, have now become more widely recognised for their environmental value, further acknowledged now with the establishment of the international bird sanctuary.

We have many challenges also.

First and foremost, and likely to dominate our agenda for a consid-

coastal reserves.

There are also challenges in opportunity.

The bird sanctuary, while likely to lead to new capacity to deliver eco-tourism, creates boundary issues for our coastal residents.

The developments in Two Wells require additional council resources that create strains on the budget and long term financial planning.

The townships of Dublin and Mallala need further expansion to

revitalise their commercial zones.

Value added agribusiness and industrial development have been difficult to attract to the region, but are essential to deliver jobs growth.

Ensuring that all our communities have the capacity to grow and prosper is essential.

Good communication is key in getting news out to our residents and feedback to elected members.

It must be a two way conversation between council and the commu-

nity, if we are to respond to issues or address emerging concerns.

Residents have made it very clear that they want a personal and direct contact with council.

They have been concerned by an increased distancing of council from its ratepayers.

They want to communicate through face-to-face interactions, not through protest placards and media advisor.

The elected members are keen to ensure that we reverse that trend and openly engage with the community.

It is my role as acting mayor to ensure the council position on issues is put forward, resulting in an informed community providing feedback to the elected members.

Often, apparently conflicting views can be reconciled, through better understanding of the opposing arguments. This is the pathway to consensus.

If we are to capitalise on the opportunities and address the challenges, it is critical we bring the community with us.

The elected members, mayor, and CEO must, and will, be available to listen (and to hear) not only the big issues, but also the smaller concerns that impact on the everyday lives of our residents.

This is the vision we all as elected members wish to pursue.”

We would like to thank everyone involved in this sad event.

A charity event to raise money was organised called Blaze Aid and this was held on Sunday December 13, 2015 and was very successful.

As part of this day a cricket match was organised in which TwoWells and Mallala CFS crews participated.

Much needed money was raised and a fun filled day was experienced by all.

Two Wells CFS caters for cadets too starting at 11 years and are held every fortnight on a Wednesday.

Cadets start back on the 2nd Wednesday of the new school term in 2016 from 5.30pm until 7pm.

TwoWells CFS has seen many new recruits this year and we would like to extend this welcome to them.

If you have some spare time during the day we are in need of daytime crews. We offer ongoing training, friendly team members, a family-orientated station, uniforms and more sweat than you will see in a lifetime.

So, come along Monday nights at 7.30pm and see what we do.

The past few weeks have been very busy for Two Wells CFS. We have attended approximately 78 jobs since the start of the financial year.

These range from car fires, car accidents, structure fires, grass fires and major bush fires such as the recent one at Pinery.

During the past year Two Wells CFS has attended many functions including voting at the school, the Two Wells Primary school fete, Blaze Aid,Two Wells Christmas Parade, open days at the station and much more.

With the silly season upon us we urge everyone to be sensible in the sun, don’t burn off any rubbish/ waste, and clean up your yards/gutters/around the home.

Make sure you share the driving and take plenty of breaks as we have attended several accidents that should not have happened due to overtiredness.

So, break often and share the drive.

New Year’s eve is an exciting one that is shared with loved ones.

CFS crews would like to experience this too so please do not use fireworks as there are huge amounts of dried grass around and fires will start.

The recent Pinery fire has touched so many lives, wreaked havoc across the plains, destroyed homes and livestock and left a repair bill in the millions and many families in shock. Here 22-yearold CFS volunteer, Veronica Presley - who only joined the Two Wells brigade in May this year - gives an account of the fire on that fateful day on November 25.

Heading out to Mallala all I could see was dark skies.

From a distance it looked like dark rain clouds until up close I realised it was clouds of smoke.

Getting closer to Mallala it started to hit what was actually happening.

When we arrived at Mallala we were waiting at the CFS station to be picked up. When the truck pulled up the guys were covered in black ash.

That gut wrenching feeling hit, I had no idea what it was going to be like out there.

I was nervous and had butterflies in my belly.

I didn’t know if I was going to be able to handle the smoke and wasn’t sure if I could stay out there.

Once the adrenaline kicked in I didn’t notice the smoke.

The fire was travelling so fast.

Jumping on the back of the truck heading into the first paddocks of the day we were mopping up at the tail end of the fire when the paddock behind us caught fire.

That was a big eye opener.

Within a blink of an eye the fire had jumped into an unburnt paddock!

We then moved to an area that required our help.

Driving through dirt roads and seeing destroyed houses, burnt vehicles and blackened livestock broke my heart.

Knowing these families had nothing to come home to made me feel sick.

Being out there was so surreal as I never thought it would happen this close to home. After it all happened and watching the news I wish there was more that could have been done but I know weather conditions prevented that.

Severe heat, strong winds and

lots of unharvested ground out there had it out of control and no way of catching it.

Hearing that people had been taken to hospital and some had lost their lives made me feel lucky that I got home safe to my family.

All six members of our trucks constantly made sure everyone was alright.

We got through it together.

I know all volunteers tried their very best out there, and sometimes we can think it wasn’t enough but we just have to remember that we were out there risking our lives to helps others.

Probus packed to hear Bev’s alpaca chat Local alpaca breeder and Two Wells Regional Action Team president, Bev TrimSmith, was guest speaker at Two Wells Probus Club’s November meeting.

Bev spoke to the group about raising alpacas and how she became involved.

She had a number of photos of alpaca young, which are called cria, and of others after shearing.

Bev said her biggest thrill was being lucky enough to own a grey alpaca.

SACWA State president, Linda Bertram said there had been a real resurgence of interest in the association in recent years.

“Somewhere along the line we missed out a generation of women, possibly because women went back to work or returned to the workforce after having a family,” Ms Bertram said.

we’ve noticed the young women of today are just so eager and enthusiastic to carry on what the CWA has been doing for more than 85 years.

“Members are keen to learn the skills of baking, crafts and a variety of other activities while sharing friendship and giving voluntary service to the community, which is still the foundation of the SACWA today.

“We’re finding that evening branches, where the regular meetings of the branch are held outside business hours, are a

great way to make sure these women can be involved in the CWA and still meet their work commitments.”

The SACWA is also hoping to open a similar evening branch in Gawler.

Information sessions will be held in Two Wells and Gawler in February next year. Dates and times are still to be confirmed, so watch this space.

FIRE IMPACT FAR REACHING As the Pinery fire clean-up goes on and rebuilding begins, the huge coordinated effort continues.

The scale of collective community response has been inspiring, matched only by the ferocity of the fire that has devastated life, property, businesses, community infrastructure, and rendered fertile land to moonscape.

With interest I read about last week’s meeting of more than 150 landowners to look at soil-saving options and the merits of emergency cultivation.

To council personnel, community groups and individuals who rallied to provide food, clothing, and accommodation, road clearance, and a shoulder to lean on; and later, to organise fundraisers and donation efforts. Well done.

Di Henwood is hoping to travel widely with husband, Kevin, in her retirement.

Di starts new life chapter Natalie Centenera reports: LOCAL Library Officer, Di Henwood, plans on joining the caravan of grey nomads exploring and enjoying Australia in their retirement.

Di and husband, Kevin, are retiring from paid employment and hope to spend more time with family, catch up with friends and potter in the garden.

Di has spent the last 25 years with the District Council of Mallala working with numerous librarians, in different locations, and mastering three different library systems.

She finishes up on December 23.

Having lived in the town for 40 years, Di admits that she will miss the people she sees on a regular basis.

“Over the years you see the school kids grow up, get married and then come in with their own kids,” she reflected.

“It’s rewarding to be able to help students research their school projects, even adults with their topics of interest or health issues.

“I will miss the people and the friends that I have made along the way (but) I hope to stay in touch with everyone.”

And after 40 years of living in Two Wells Di has seen many changes in the town, and still looks forward to the new changes ahead, which she hopes may entice the young and older members of the community to stay in the area.

And as for her and husband Kevin’s first caravanning adventure, Tamworth’s Country Music Festival is the first stop, after that it is “wherever the wind takes us I guess,” she says with an air of freedom.

Best of luck Di and Kevin, may the wind always be at your back.

Angle Vale students stitch up donation for homeless Students from Angle Vale Primary School, who took part in the Knitting for the Homeless program, saw the results of their efforts lovingly handed over to the Adelaide Day Centre for Homeless Persons in November.

Pas Forgione, a representative of the centre said it was beautiful to see such a program.

“I’m actually inspired by this, it is very heart-warming,” he said.

“It’s important to teach young people from an early age to empathise with homeless people, not to judge them.

Students were visibly delighted to donate the items to the homeless shelter.

AVPS teacher Haze Sackey, the program’s creator, said the year six

students who had been visiting the retirement village every Monday afternoon and knitting under the guidance of the village residents, were really excited to see where the product is going.

“They’re actually giving it to someone,” Haze said.

“The biggest thing is now they know they can make a difference in the community.

“They don’t have to have a job, they can actually make something.”

Students were then given the opportunity to ask questions about the Day Centre, and homelessness in general.

“This time of year is particularly difficult for homeless people,” Pas told the students. “Homelessness can become invisible, but you have taken the effort to see the problem and help.

“It is important to acknowledge how easily people can end up homeless through no fault of their own.”

Haze intends to continue the program in 2016, as not only do the students benefit from giving back to the community, the residents of the retirement village look forward to engaging with the children each week as well.

Hay and cash from bank appeal BENDIGO Bank Community branches have teamed up to help local farmers affected by the Pinery fire, organising hay deliveries from half way across the state to aid growers in need.

Port Lincoln and Virginia Community Bank branches joined forces with local Port Lincoln farmers to collect fodder and transport it to fire-affected areas near Pinery.

Knowing all too well the damage bushfire can have on farms and livestock after the Port Lincoln bushfires in 2005, local farmers have banded together to collect excess fodder and pass it on to those who need it most.

With transport costs of about $1,100 per load though, the farmers approached Port Lincoln Community Bank Branch to assist in funding transportation costs.

Port Lincoln branch manager, Phil Channon, said his branch was partnering with local farmers and local transport drivers to coordinate the delivery, the first of which would arrived this week.

“This is a great example of community collaboration, and what our branches can do for their communities in times of need,” he said.

“Having experienced bushfires ourselves in the region a few years ago, we know just how hard it can be to get back on your feet, which is

why we wanted to work with local farmers give back to these affected communities.”

One of those receiving assistance is Freeling family, Simon and Neil Schuster.

“It’s definitely appreciated,” Simon said.

Virginia Community Bank is coordinating the delivery on the receiving end, which comes days after they kick-started Bendigo Bank’s South Australian Bushfire Renewal Appeal, which is being held in partnership with Rural Bank and St John SA, with a $20,000 donation.

Virginia branch manager, Alf Sobczak, said his team was eager to help out the local community affected by the fires, which was less than 15 kilometres away from the branch.

“It’s a no-brainer for us – we have a strong history of supporting many of the communities impacted by the fire,” he said.

“If we support them in the good times, of course we should be there during times of difficulty and disaster”.

So far, the appeal has raised more than $60,000, with donations from Port Lincoln, Cummins and West Beach Community Bank branches, as well as numerous interstate branches.

It is easy to establish your own fruit and vegetable garden and create a healthy lifestyle if you live in this beautiful patch of the country.

Emily admits that she turned vegan after a chord had been struck within her, “I love animals too much to eat them or drink their milk” she tells.

The diet of her and her two children is very healthy, and she has noticed that with “consuming a large variety of fruits and vegetables and nuts, my skin is clearer and I have never felt healthier”, she adds.

Emily explains that she is able to grow a lot of her own fruit and vegetables on her property as the soil is so fertile.

“We especially enjoy growing stone fruits, tomatoes and cucumbers in the warmer months,” she said.

What Emily doesn’t grow on her own she is able to “buy good quality local produce from the nearby fruit and vegetable shop” she continues, “and I sometimes buy the delicious dairy free/egg free banana cake from the Two Wells Bakery. It’s amazing and my non-vegan friends love it too!”.

It is little wonder the state government is being asked to officially recognise the region as a clearly defined primary production zone, known as the ‘northern food bowl’, capitalising on the economic potential as well as creating a cultural landscape to reflect this.

It is hoped residential growth within Virginia and the northern Adelaide Plains will embrace the ideal and future communities will identify themselves as a part of the character of the ‘food bowl’.

Individuals and families that are seeking to live a more natural lifestyle, like Emily, are already reaping the benefits of living in this environment, making lifestyle choices or changes, like Vegan January, all the more attainable.

Students finish on a high

Balaklava High School held its presentation evening at the town hall on Wednesday, December 2.

A large crowd attended to say farewell to the Year 12 students and acknowledge activities and successes of 2015.

The evening started with an entertaining vocal ensemble performance of “Cups” from the movie, Pitch Perfect, followed by presentation of senior school and top performer certificates.

WRC representative, Holly Cowan, presented Courtney Pringle with the 2014 Dux award.

Head students, Aleisha Michael and Dillon Michael presented the student leader’s speech, followed by an amusing valedictory speech by Year 12 student, Douglas Mayne.

Former BHS student, Tammy Edwards, was keynote speaker, and gave an excellent speech about her life, and the road to success.

Music students, Tranel ChurchettGomez, on piano, accompanied Anastacia Kearns, who sang “Titanium.”

Academic and sports awards and other major awards were presented, before Kathryn Mahony gave the Governing Council report.

The Crafter family of Two Wells was presented with the DECD Volunteer Award for their six year involvement at the school with Pedal Prix.

The grand finale was an hilarious Year 10 dram presentation of a “90s Mega Mix” which brought much laughter from the audience.

Book tough going as readers hit slow lane Each month the Two Wells Book Club will bring you a review of the book that had been read by the group the previous month.

The Book Club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library.

We hope you to provide you with an opportunity to engage with some books that you might never have thought to pick up and read.

This month’s book was ‘Hill of Grace’ by Stephen Orr. Stephen Orr is an Australian writer.

Hill of Grace, his second novel, takes place in the familiar surroundings of the Barossa in the 1950’s.

A devout Lutheran community is set amongst the backdrop of vines and stone churches, and faces a changing mainstream society, whilst attempting to preserve their own German culture and strong religious beliefs.

Throw in William Miller, a husband, father and strict religious observer, who believes he has figured out the date when Christ will return, the Apocalypse.

William attempts to draw people into his beliefs, yet they are understandably apprehensive with his revelation, and he Two Wells Echo, January, 2016

faces ridicule and mockery as he embarks on preparations for the End. It is this test of his resolve, and faith in his own beliefs that is the main pretext of the story, however, there are many characters and subplots that could be charged with the crime of stunting the momentum of the novel.

Book club members were not a fan of this book.

Although the storyline and the physical setting initially appealed to the group, unfortunately the slow moving nature of the book saw the majority leave it on the bedside table, unfinished.

For the few that did push on until the end, the prospect of learning about the region and its history was of interest.

Orr’s style of writing is to be praised, his prose lifts off the pages like a gentle rhythm playing in the background and all aspects of the story, characters, environment and plot are given the same considered treatment.

This ultimately makes for a long and heavy read and slows the movement of the main character, William, as he prepares for the second coming of Christ.

The annual Two Wells Street Parade has seen in another year, with the event on Friday December 11 again well attended and showcasing a variety of stalls, entertainment options and of course colorful floats!

A sunny afternoon provided the perfect backdrop for local families, and many friends and visitors, to soak up the atmosphere while strolling the street and taking in the large variety of stalls.

The parade itself was full of colour, laughter and fun, with Santa announcing his arrival at the end of the parade with the ringing of a bell.

As in previous years the marching bands were popular and the kids lining the street were enthusiastically charging after the many sweets thrown out by the floats as they passed by.

Two Wells Regional Action Team president, Bev Smith-Trim, said the night was a great family-friendly event and a terrific way to celebrate the end of the year.

“We consider ourselves really lucky that we had such wonderful weather for the event,” Bev said.

“We were also thrilled that volunteers from Blaze Aid came along and they were able to walk around the street and collect a considerable amount of donations from members of the community to go towards the

Bev estimates around 2500 people attended the street parade event, with Pauline Routley from Two Wells Bakery given the honour of judging all categories of the handicraft and colouring in competitions, which showcased some great creative skills.

Getting into the spirit of the night was also a number of businesses along the street who decorated their premises in a variety of Christmas themes.

A great marketing opportunity for the town came in the form of Channel 7 weather presenter, Amelia Mulcahy, who presented the nightly weather segment at 6.30pm from the town.

Amelia also judged the competition for the best-decorated business, which this year was won by Two Wells Snack Bar. Blaze Aid volunteer, Wendy Cope, judged the floats as they passed by, with Two Wells Scout Group winning the best parade entry, in the community category, for their outdoor camping float.

The Hickinbotham Group won the best business entrant in the parade with their impressive Eden float, which featured many local children.

Summer time in the garden The hot days came early this year and as this goes to print, it is so very hot now.

Itcanbehardtogarden hereonthenorthernAdelaide Plains but it is well to remember our climate is Mediterranean - let us enjoy the variety of the plants of this climate.

It has been a hard few weeks and our thoughts are constantly with those who have lost so much.

A wise old grandmother who was burned out many years ago once said, “a garden will always flourish if you share it with your friends”.

This is an adage we can all take to heart and gardeners are usually always ready to share a plant here and there, so may all of you whom have lost your garden, may you be given a plant here and there to help heal the pain.

There are several helpful websites that can be accessed for re-establishing gardens or to tweak our existing gardens.

State Flora website ‘Re-establishing your Garden after Bushfire’ is one excellent example, which gives many suggestions of plants.

There are two state flora nurseries located in South Australia.

The Belair Nursery is on the Upper Sturt Rd within the Belair National Park and the other is the Murray Bridge Nursery on Bremer Rd Murray Bridge.

The Australian Native Plant Society (Australia) also has another good site, which is very easy to access.

Australians have a love/ hate relationship with lawns of late, but a lawned area can act as a natural cooler when the night breezes swirl around our homes, as well as allowing some birds to forage for food.

Remember to keep your lawns mown, but not too short in summer and give them a long, deep water when necessary.

Mosquitoes can zap a happy outdoor evening into a few days of itching misery as well as being a health hazard.

Stagnant water or pools are havens for mosquitoes so make sure no water remains in saucers after your watering.

Every couple of days clean and renew the water in your bird baths.

An easy way to keep the level of mosquitoes down is to have a pond or even a large pot with a few fish that will eat the mosquito larvae.

Planting lemon scented plants only works if you release the lemon aroma, so put a lemon scented plant by the back door and as you walk past each time give it a brush to release the scent.

Put a lemon scented pelargonium on your outdoor table and fiddle with it as you sit.

Agapanthus plants are now dressed in all their finery and flowering their little heads off.

They really do like to be the show offs but please remember to dead head them after flowering to prevent them becoming weedy pests.

A haircut for the bottle brush is also a good idea to help them prepare for the flowering next year.

Plant a Lemon Verbena for fragrance in January and maybe an Oleander for their stunning show.

However, remember that Oleanders are poisonous!

JO's frightening fortieth fun

Jo-Anne Sumner celebrated her 40th birthday in style recently.

Jo-Anne, along with her husband, have travelled a lot to the USA and spent many Halloweens over there, so about three years ago they decided to throw a Halloween Party.

It worked out that Halloween fell on a Saturday night the year Jo was turning 40. With her birthday being only 10 days after 31 October it would be an excellent early birthday party and so Jo’s Frightening Fortieth party preparations began.

The most surprising thing was every single person dressed up.

Locals rally around fire affected Thanks All Round The generosity of the local community in response to the devastating Pinery Fire was demonstrated across the Adelaide Plains through donations of money, clothes, food and time to those who fell victim to the blaze.

Adelaide Plains Veterinary Clinic in Two Wells has been overwhelmed with the generosity shown to people and their pets, the often forgotten victims of such a crisis.

The community response was extraordinary and clinic manager, Karen Bearpark, is grateful for the donations of food and bedding as well as monetary contributions that will be used to assist the owners of the animals treated, so they are not affected financially.

If you are interested in making a contribution or would like further information please contact the clinic on 852 3600.

On a more personal level, Two Wells local, Anne Arbon, would like

Try this classic Christmas cake What better recipe to share at Christmas time than a Christmas cake!

This sugar-free boiled fruit cake by Two Wells local, Maria Pellizzari, is just the ticket if you’re looking to watch what you put into your mouth this festive season (good luck with that!!).

Maria says she got the recipe from her neighbour and has been making the cakes for her Meals on Wheels customers for the past couple of Christmases. Moist, full of fruit and delicious this hearty cake is sure to go down a treat. Merry Christmas!

Ingredients 4 -5 cups dried fruit (soak in port or sherry overnight) 100 grams butter 2 cups cold water 3 tsps mixed spice pinch of salt 1 cup plain flour 2 cups wholemeal SR flour 2 tsps bicarb soda ½ cup marmalade ½ cup walnuts Method Place fruit, butter, cold water, spices, marmalade and salt into a saucepan.

Boil for 3 minutes, remove from heat and allow to cool.

When cold, sift in flours and stir in walnuts.

Dissolve bicarb soda in boiling water and stir into flour mix.

Place mixture into an 8-inch square cake tin (or as Maria does, 4 small individual tins) lined with baking paper and decorate with blanched almonds.

Bake at 180 degrees for 20 minutes and then check with a skewer in the centre of the cake.

Brush with port when cold. Serve and enjoy.

Irrigation scheme group established SA Water is one step closer to developing a master plan for recycled water storage in the area following the formation of a community committee to address the issue.

Phase two of SA Water’s Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme (NAIS) proposal focuses on engagement with relevant parties, especially the community.

As such, the company has established a community committee, with representatives from industry groups, horticultural irrigators, the community and local government hoping to work together to develop a master plan for recycled water storage in the northern Adelaide plains area.

Earlier in the year SA Water held a number of public meetings throughout the district following community concerns about the possibility of storing water, known as Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR), as part of the NAIS. Some of the issues attendees raised at a meeting in the Virginia Institute as part of these community meetings, included water quality, environmental sustainability and/or harm, salinity concerns, how the aquifer works and the cost of the water.

Other points raised included regulation of bores, who pays for any expansion now and in the future, and if the market could sustain more growth.

Two Wells ward councillor, Eddie Stubing, is part of the newly formed NAIS community committee and is positive about future water storage options for the region.

Mr Stubing said the water giant was putting in a lot of effort and emphasis on making sure the community was involved in the decision making process, saying the potential for growth as a result of access to more water was exciting.

“I think it’s fantastic,” he said.

“There’s people that want the water (and) it will bring work to the area.

“We need irrigation on a big scale, not only for horticulture but on a broad acre scale to create a future for farmers to export on a bigger scale, that’s the potential (but) there’s a lot of work to

be done yet.”

SA Water’s Senior Manager of Business Development, Mark Wilson, agrees community engagement is integral to the development of the scheme.

“This input will help form SA Water’s future decision-making on the most appropriate water storage option,” Mr Wilson said.

The related Expression of Interest with regards to the NAIS closed on November 24, 2015, for proposals from private enterprise for the collection and distribution of at least an additional 12 gigalitres of recycled water from the Bolivar Wastewater Treatment Plant.

From here SA Water will undertake an intensive evaluation process of the offers to ensure the best outcome for South Australia.

It is expected a decision will be finalised by mid-2016.

echo 20 News feature: A day in the life of a Federal MP

Champion’s long hours come with Canberra territory IF you have ever wondered what politicians do to earn their paycheck, just one day shadowing Federal Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion, during a sitting week at Parliament House painted a clear picture of how hectic being an MP can be.

Andrew Manuel and I were given the oportunity to visit Canberra for a day. And by the time I rolled into Mr Champion’s office at Parliament House at 7am, he had finished his bowl of muesli at his desk while perusing morning media reports, with Sky News playing on TV in the background. From there, it was off to a quick party meeting before a morning press conference in front of Parliament House at about 7.30am.

The subject of the day was the Federal Government’s submarine build, although he did field a random question on MPs breastfeeding during Parliament.

From there, it was back to the office for a rundown of the various meetings scheduled for the day, while grabbing a quick snack on the run.

Lunch is never a guaranteed thing.

On the agenda was a catch up with the Ambassador from Palestine as part of the foreign affairs committee, a meeting with ship builders from the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU), attending the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Australian War Memorial, and a speech later in the afternoon debating the government’s proposed changes to the Medicare Safety Net. Mr Champion also fronted the

the day starts early, breakfast on the run while reading up on daily issues. cameras later that day at a press conference on the submarine build, supported by fellow South Australian Labor MPs and Senators.

Question Time was at 2pm.

Parliament runs for most of the day, where various Bills and matters of public interest are discussed but Question Time is a brief window where things get rowdy in the House.

So while a lot of work is handled outside of Question Time, in comparatively peaceful circumstances, the opportunity to quiz the government on controversial topics such as GST increases, changes to Medicare and anything else the Opposition sees as a contentious issue is taken with gusto.

It might seem like chaos on news bulletins and it is when the crowds fill the galleries, to see Prime Min-

ister, Malcolm Turnbull, grilled by his opponents sitting opposite, and firing back with equal tenacity, it is a spectator sport.

Mr Champion survived the sitting with just a warning though.

But once Question Time ends, it is like a switch is flicked and the House once more goes back to a civil procession of speeches and countering arguments.

Later, Mr Champion delivered his Medicare Safety Net speech, then headed off to a social event to farewell the AMWU delegation.

He spent about 45 minutes at the function before taking on chamber duty in Parliament, as at least two Opposition MPs are required to be in the chamber at any given time.

Parliament adjourns at about 8pm on a Wednesday but runs to 9.30pm on Monday and Tuesday.

It makes for a heck of a long day, and if Mr Champion is not in Canberra, his time is filled with various other commitments, whether formal functions, meeting with lobby groups and other representatives, or simply lobbing in a shopping centre in the electorate running listening posts.

So while being across the various national and local issues is one key element to the role, the time and travel commitments take this job to another level. Having been there in person to see what goes on in just one day, it helped build the level of appreciation of the hard yards put in by so many Parliamentarians from all sides of politics.

WHILE it may appear Tanya Plibersek is boring him, Mr Champion was an active participant in Question Time.

Pollie spotting too easy in the nation’s capital Who said politics is show business for ugly people?

Like you, I see politicians from afar. We see them in the daily newspapers, we see them on Lateline TV, but earlier this month, our local member, Nick Champion, gave our newspaper the opportunity of a lifetime to meet some in person on a trip to Canberra last Wednesday.

I woke early and went for a run around Lake Burley Griffin and it was 6am when I spotted my first pollie...our new PM, the smiling Malcolm Turnbull and his power walking wife, Lucy.

I didn’t think it would be polite to ask for a photo, so I kept running. Plus we had a meeting with Nick at 7am.

Politicians start early, and finish late. Nick Champion did a doorstop interview with a myriad of news cameras (including Plains Producer editor, Les Pearson) on the future of submarine building in South Australia. My eyes were wandering though, as esteemed members filed in for a busy day at parliament house.

At 10am we were driven to the Australian War Memorial for the Remembrance Day ceremony. It almost seemed fitting that the rain started on arrival. A sea of umbrellas, wet suits, ladies with dripping wet backs, but for two hours they

Andrew Manuel reports: sat and paid their respects. SA MP Amanda Rishworth, and NSW MP Stephen Jones shared a brolly behind us, Minister Julie Bishop was only a few seats in front. Oh, did I mention Prince Charles and Camilla were in attendance. But I needed a bigger zoom lens to confirm.

On return to Parliament, Nick introduced us to Bronwyn Bishop in the hallways, who was proud to tell us her grandfather was once the editor of neighbouring newspaper, The Bunyip. Les asked Bronwyn if she also shared a passion for writing - her response, “I’m a better speaker.”

The dining hall, also known as the trough, was the perfect location to spot the member for Fairfax (Clive Palmer).

Apparently Clive doesn’t grace the house often, well that seemed to be a recurring joke of the day, so we considered ourselves lucky.

Nick’s minder Richard Brooks rushed us from lunch to a press conference...more about the subs.

This time we met SA Senator Penny Wong, who spoke on message about creating jobs for South Australians.

Then while the cameras were set up, Andrew Wilkie, Nick Xeno-

There was also another sub meeting in the afternoon, but by this time our Pollie Spotting card was almost full. Plus we were leaving room on it for dinner at the National Press Club.

Press Club, the inner sanctum, bore strict rules. No cameras, no tweets, no “on the records”.

We weren’t there for more than five minutes before I was introduced to Labor powerbroker and deputy leader of the opposition,

Tanya Plibersek who was very polite to speak with.

And while I didn’t speak with Anthony Albanese in an official capacity, we did talk about the latest beer launched in Canberra aptly named Albo.

And it was a longneck of “Albo” that former Primer Minister Kevin Rudd held as he took the stage to lead a special session at the quiz night...guess who all his questions were about? Correct, One K-Rudd. I also had the opportunity to speak with celebrity Senators Penny Wong and Sarah

Hanson-Young about the strength of country newspapers. Sarah grew up in regional Victoria and she mentioned she had read her local that week.

It was a fun evening, and a privileged day for two small town reporters to get the insight into “a day in the life of...”

My take home was: Federal Politicians and the staff who surround them are genuine, hard working people, who are friendly with little time to themselves. Or is that just because we were wearing our Press Pass?

Coastline changes reveal concerning Special Report: Malcolm Frost Over the last 60 years or so, there has been a deceptively slow, but seemingly relentless change occurring to our local Gulf of St Vincent coastline. A study of aerial photographs from 1949 onwards tells the sorry story in no uncertain terms. The evidence is right there before our eyes.

In 1970 we had two very attractive, clean washed shellgrit beaches at both Port Gawler and Middle Beach. Those beaches were a regular focus for many community activities and those experiences that were shared aided a great deal in the social cohesion for our region. The tidal flats were also a valuable habitat for shorebirds.

Up to 1970 the mangrove forest existed across the Gawler River delta bounding the south end of Port Gawler Beach. The north end of Port Gawler Beach was bounded by a much smaller mangrove forest around the Salt Creek delta, which also bounded the south end of Middle Beach. The north end of Middle Beach was bounded by the large mangrove forest of the Light River delta. The larger Light River delta mangrove forest’s south margin was straight out from the Middle Beach Caravan Park.

Look now and see what we have!

The majority of the sub-tidal flats no longer exist at Port Gawler Beach and Middle Beach. Sadly, those two beaches have both been totally enclosed by the relentless expansion of the mangrove forests. The once valuable recreational amenity of those beaches has been lost. Importantly, and in addition, the once expansive feeding habitat for both resident and migratory shorebirds has also been lost.

Previously, the shorebirds foraged the sub-tidal flats at these beaches for food. Crustaceans, molluscs, sea lice, worms and other food sources were once plentiful and accessible for the migratory and local shorebirds. This foraging no longer happens at those sites as the invading mangrove mono culture takes up the majority of the area.

The reasons for the mangrove forest’s relentless expansion across these beaches is worthy of a whole

THE changing landscape of local beaches begs the question, will others in the vicinity suffer a similar fate, or can something be done about it, before we lose them forever? different study and discussion.

However, it seems that the conditions that encouraged the expansion of the forest still exist. That brings up the issue regarding the necessity to ensure that the same loss of amenity and habitat does not happen to Light Beach.

WTF? being - What’s The Future?

How do we ensure that the same amenity and habitat loss does not happen to Light Beach as well?

It is important to protect the only remaining beach that has an open aspect to Gulf St Vincent north of St Kilda. Intervention is necessary

to ensure that there is no further loss of shoreline foraging habitat for the birds.

There needs to be a limit set to the north margin of the Light River Delta mangrove forest. The location of this margin needs to be made easily identifiable and a management plan put in place to ensure that the mangrove forest is contained to the south of the margin.

Similarly, an easily identifiable margin at the north end of Light Beach needs to be established and the mangroves contained to the north of the margin.

Beach can simply be identified by straight lines out from the beach that are determined by two approved GPS coordinates.

Suitable markers along the margin line can be provided by small diameter vertical PVC tubes with reflectors attached. Small diameter coring can be done deeply enough for the inserted tubes to be stable and remain in place.

The tubes would be flexible enough to not be a threat to damaging anything (like boats).

Any mangroves that are seen to be establishing themselves between the designated margins at each end

of Light Beach should be permitted to be removed and/or relocated elsewhere.

Such action is necessary to protect our remaining coastal recreational amenity and to preserve the remaining shorebird sub-tidal habitat on our local coast.

To ensure that ‘the above plan’ or similar, is defined and implemented successfully requires for it to be developed and approved by the appropriate authorities. Since Light Beach is an asset that belongs to us all, engaging with the community on this issue is a must. Surely it can’t be too hard!

Mark making the most of retired life

Mark Wasley retired from a career as a specialist police officer at the age of 50, however his colourful life experiences were far from over.

From working as an extra on movies, to sailing his yacht, and serving the community as councillor of the Two Wells Ward along with being Deputy Mayor for three years, this former farm boy’s adventurous spirit hasn’t kept him idle.

And although he is looking forward to some rest and relaxation, Mark admits that he is “busier now than I ever was when I was working”.

“I’m a great believer in opportunity”, he says, “doors open if you’re prepared to have an open mind”.

This is what perhaps led Mark to answer an advertisement in the local newspaper looking for ‘extras’ to work on a film that was to be shot locally, soon after he retired from the force. The film was called ‘Swerve’ and his involvement led him to feature in some TV commercials, documentaries and feature films, Two Wells Echo, January, 2016

most notably ‘Red Dog’ and ‘Wolf Creek 2’, where he was a stand in for John Jarratt and a body double for Gerard Kennedy.

Growing up on the family farm on the Adelaide Plains near Two Wells, he remembers the escapades and good times he shared with his brothers in what he has termed “the perfect boy’s backyard”.

Catching yabbies, hunting foxes and rabbits, building a flying fox over the river and sailing their home made raft, Mark and his brothers became resourceful in their spare time outdoors, only returning home when the sun went down.

He admits that he had no idea what he wanted to do when he finished school, “I wasn’t a particularly good or gifted student”.

The adventurous nature that took hold of him as a child saw him attend the Fort Largs Police Academy, graduating in 1975.

From there, Mark’s career within

SAPOL became an adventure within itself, and he is now turning his hand at penning a book about his interesting experiences during

this time.

His personal tale, that he sometimes shares when he does special talks for service clubs and commu-

nity groups, shows the point of view of police officers that people don’t usually see and includes anecdotes from the times he served in uniform patrols, suburban police stations, STAR Force and the SAPOL AntiCorruption Branch.

During his career he developed special skills and capabilities that saw him seconded to the National Crime Authority, the Australian Federal Police, the Kennedy Royal Commission into Police Corruption and finally the WA Corruption and Crime Commission, all of which makes for an interesting story. Mark also enjoyed his time representing the local community in the District Council of Mallala from 2010 to 2014.

“It puts you in touch with some amazing people in the community, and it became clear that we live in a wonderful place,” he said.

Looking after our landscapes At the recent Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) meeting it was discussed that we work together on an environmental management plan for our region; yes you could say another plan.

I believe the advantage of this plan is that it will be focused on what we as a community group believe to be important in the protection of our regions’ environmental assets.

But without the support of our community, council and you, our efforts will have little impact.

I believe our landscapes are vital to our quality way of life and our region boasts many unique landscapes.

One such landscape is our roadsides.

Unfortunately many exotic pest plants including Caltrop, Salvation Jane, Columbia daisy and Boxthorns, just to name a few, call these vast areas home.

Unfortunately many of these plants would have had added significant fuel loads during our recent fires, and as witnessed by the ferocity of these fires, focusing on reducing potential fuel loads should be a priority in future revegetation activities. Pest plants also contaminate our landscapes by spreading into productive lands and in some cases around our region making this land unusable for animals or cropping purposes.

To control these pest plants we rely on our council, NRM and landholders to cultivate or spray poisonous weedicide to eradicate these

pest plants on roadsides before they contaminate our adjacent lands.

Our region has approximately 900 kilometres of roads or approximately 1800 hectares of road verges.

One way to reduce pest plants from growing within our road corridors is by planting native vegetation along our roadsides.

There are many local native species that could be planted which could address many of the aforementioned issues.

All plants will burn if the fire is hot enough but fire-retardant plants

are less likely to carry fire as many have a high salt or moisture content and low volatile oil content in their leaves. Plants such as Dianellas, several varieties of saltbushes, including Rhagodias, Enchylaenas, just to name few.

Roadside vegetation is not only visually pleasing it also has positive effects on our economy and wellbeing.

Planting local indigenous species will out compete pest plants for the available nutrients and light; provide windbreaks, reduce wind erosion, shelter for stock and best of all they are able to survive on local rainfall.

Revegetation projects along our roadsides can also provide significant carbon sequestration benefits for our region (Carbon sequestra-

tion - the process of absorbing carbon into living things so that it stays out of the atmosphere) and stored within roadside corridors that are seen as unproductive landscapes.

Roadside vegetation also helps to increase biological diversity allowing our wildlife to move throughout our region, all of these benefits would save large sums of money.

Furthermore, through my worksite we are volunteer growers for trees for life, these plants will be planted within Playford region.

I hope that one day we will be able to grow for our region.

Angle Vale Primary school students took part in the national Music: Count Us In event on Thursday October 29, .

This huge school initiative saw more than 500,000 students from over 2,100 schools sing the same song, at the same time, right across the country.

Music: Count Us In gives children from all walks of life the opportunity to learn and practice a song that they play and sing with thousands of students from across Australia.

The aim of this annual event is to highlight the important role that music plays in educational development.

This year, along with program ambassador John Foreman OAM, MCUI was delighted to have Australian icon Marcia

Hines as the 2015 music mentor.

As part of her role as mentor, Marcia has worked closely with this year’s talented student songwriters and John Foreman OAM to create the MCUI song ‘Gold’.

At Angle Vale Primary, nine classes between years 1 and 4 took part in the event which they had been practising for over the past few months.

Music, dance and drama teacher, Lisa Williamson, has been at the school for years years and has been able to implement the program for the same amount of years with much enthusiasm from the students.

AVPS is lucky to have a specialist performing arts teacher, however, there are many schools that are not afforded this luxury,

which is why the federal government implemented the initiative nine years ago.

“The song that the students learn is always in a popular song format, it has a verse, chorus and bridge”, explained Lisa.

“This year’s song is called ‘Gold’ and the students love it!

“The song always has a positive message, and this year it is about being part of a team.”

From the moment students rolled into the school hall to perform, the excitement was clear as they quickly moved into their rehearsed position.

Year 1 performed a dance, Year 2 showed off their body percussion moves, Year 3 provided the singing voices and Year 4 were a fabulous audience.

Pre-school and childcare children put on a fabulous end of year concert at the Two Wells Community and Children’s Centre on Friday November 20, families enjoying a celebration of the year’s achievements.

A jumping castle, face painting, sausage sizzle and ‘Bop Till You Drop’ disco was “a nice way to bring our family and community together,” said the Centre’s Director, Sarah Wormald.

Children relished the opportunity to show the audience of family and friends what they had been working on.

The four songs, ‘Music Man’, ‘I’m a Starfish’, ‘Five Fingers on Your

Hand’ and ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’, are all part of the positive education curriculum that is being delivered at the centre.

With such a successful year completing, Sarah is already looking forward to the next one ahead, “our vision for 2016 is to follow up with character strengthening, building children’s well-being and resilience in order to flourish in life,” she said.

“We want to build up their confidence, their ability to take risks and see them persevere with tasks, even when things get tough.”

And by the strength of the performance given it appears the confidence of

the children is already at a high.

Audience members were entertained and delighted at the enthusiasm of the children.

Live music, colourful classic cars, bright rockabilly dresses and a dance floor busy with energetic rock ‘n’ roll dancing filled the beautiful grounds of the Virgara Winery for the day.

President of The Legends Rock and Roll Club and main organiser of the day’s event, Terry Smith, was pleased with the turnout.

“It takes about 12 months to organise this,” Terry said.

From 10am till 5pm, rock ‘n’ roll was the flavour of the day.

Five bands provided the soundtrack, coming from all over Adelaide including Bobby Dee and the Decibells, Runa-

way Boys, The Wild Ones, Cool Rockin’ Daddy and DJ Ray. Youngsters were kept busy with a jumping castle and a visit from Santa Claus.

A fashion parade of rockabilly dresses was held, and if you were tempted to take part in the atmosphere of ‘living in yesterday’ you could find yourself the perfect outfit at the clothing stalls.

This is the sixth year the Christmas picnic has been running and is growing in patronage every year.

The swimming Pannell Students converge on Adelaide for Pacific school games Report: Natalie Centenera • From back page Proud mum, Kylie, said Harry was a little nervous to begin with.

“Harry was a little overwhelmed at the start of the week but soon overcame his nerves and enjoyed the experience.”

They both attended the closing ceremony at the Adelaide showgrounds – a very special event which we’re sure both Emma and Harry will remember forever.

For Emma, 13, and a Year 7 student at Angle Vale Public School, it will be her second Pacific School Games.

She competed four years ago in Melbourne and is looking forward to once again competing in her sport at the highest level, which is similar to a miniOlympics for young competitors.

Her younger brother Harry, 10 and in Year 4 at the same school, is also keen to make his mark and experience the adrenalin of competing in such a huge event.

It is from sheer hard work and dedication that the both of them have swum their way to this position.

Emma trains six times a week and Harry, four, with the Playford Aquatic Club, at the Elizabeth Aquadome.

“We pretty much live at the pool”, says Emma jokingly.

They are in the water so much that Harry’s hair is gradu-

However, the five am starts are paying off, as Emma will be attending the National Championships next year in March, also to be held in Adelaide, where she may find herself ‘qualifying’ for her dream, to one day be part of the Commonwealth or Olympic team.

The events that she will participate in at the games this week are the 50m, 100m and 200m Butterfly; 200m Individual Medley; 50m Freestyle and,

hold your breath, two relay events!

This is Harry’s first ever year representing South Australia and the Playford District and he will compete in the 50m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle and the 200m Individual Medley.

With such high expectations of themselves, they are surprisingly relaxed.

Instead of anxiety setting in, the both of them are thrilled and excited, and admit that they rarely become stressed before a race.

So what goes

Harry and Emma in their Pacific School Games uniforms. through their mind whilst they’re head down in the water, pushing their way to the end of the pool?

“I usually have a song in my head,” says Emma, “it’s easier to swim when I have a beat.”

Harry agrees, “Yeah, I move my arms to a beat, any random song that comes into my head.”

Angle Vale Primary School P.E. teacher, Keri Stone, has known the Pannell family for five years and is proud of her students’

efforts, “They are both extremely hard workers and come from a lovely family, so it is nice to see them do so well.”

She has assisted with fundraising efforts at the school to help with the associated costs of competing in such large scale events.

Parents Adam and Kylie are also dedicated to the aspirations of their talented young athletes.

Early mornings, afternoons and weekends at the pool as well as various regional and in-

terstate trips, sees their family life very busy.

Their eldest daughter Rebecca is in high school and currently training for a national indoor netball competition.

And, Emma and Harry have interests and activities outside of swimming.

Kylie confesses that “there isn’t much time to sit down and breathe.”

Harry plays Cricket and Football, Emma plays Netball, and the family is also involved in Scouts at One Tree

Hill.

For this week, however, it is all about swimming!

After the opening ceremony for the games was held at Adelaide Showgrounds on the Sunday, the Pannell dynamic duo have been immersing themselves in serious competition at the new SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre at Oaklands Park, swimming to the beat in their own head and, fingers crossed, realising the dreams and expectations they have been working so hard for.

Lower North Gun Club held its November shoot on Sunday November 22 with 24 competitors attending.

Competitors shot in the 100 target Lower North Double Barrel Championship, sponsored by Heatcraft.

Overall for the day was Max Pontifex with an un-

beatable score of 112/113.

First in AA Grade was Fred Keen on 105/107 with Nev Wehrmann in second place on 130/132.

A Grade was also won

by Max Pontifex with John Mitchell taking second place with 111/113.

B Grade was won by Luigi Ciaramellano on 86/100.

C Grade was won by Brian August on 96/100 and Sean Coffey took second place with 94/100.

Junior High Gun was won by Jack Tapscott with a score of 90/100.

This month’s shoot was on Sunday 20th December 20 and featured the famous Christmas Shoot with 25t Xmas Handicap, 30t Point Score Christmas Challenge with darts and eight ball, the 25t Xmas Mixed Metre event and a free Christmas lunch!

Close game for the under 10s • From back page Nov 23rd: With some sharp run outs and a couple of wickets to Jess Pool the home side kept Sandy Creek to 157.

Rebecca Pool took the other wicket and Heidi Bergen made the other run out.

Nov 27th: Another close game for the under 10s but this time they missed out on the chocolates narrowly losing to Angle Vale.

Leo and Daly both took a wicket each restricting Angle Vale to 101.

This total was enough for a 16run win for Angle Vale, Devlin top scored with 29 retired.

Nov 28th: The second week started off in our favour with Lachlan Goss and Travis Wake taking a few early wickets, then Salisbury North showed some resistance until Dylan Wise took 3 for 22 after taking off the gloves.

The game was coming down to the crunch until two critical LBW decisions went against us and once our total was surpassed the game lost its spark.

Corey Carter took the last 2 wickets to finish with 3 for 22 also.

Nov 30th: Not too much went Two Wells’ way when it was their

turn to bat.

Megan Curry top scored with 11 with Jess Pool and Heidi Bergen making 7.

The team made 82 from 24 overs.

Dec 4th: Two Wells hosted its last game before the Christmas break, against Salisbury North.

The visitors batted the full 25 overs making 105 with Elliott taking 2 for 5 in two overs and Cattell taking the other one.

Barnett and Leo pushed towards the total with 14 and 11 respectively but ran out of overs in the end to finish on 68.

Dec 5th: A hot weekend was on the cards with this game almost called off due to the heat.

Two Wells batted first and posted a total of 194 thanks to Will Hart making a timely half century and classy knocks from Steve Lynch (27) and Adam Harris (29).

With the weather pushing 40 plus, extra drinks breaks were needed, delaying the game and causing Two Wells to rotate the bowlers more.

Lee Henderson took his first wickets for the club with a tidy spell of 2 for 14 off 4 overs while Corey Carter and Travis Wake both

finished with 3 wickets, bowling the opposition out for 146 Dec 6th: Match cancelled due to heat.

Dec 7th: Playing a player short again the women’s side spread the wicket taking amongst most of the bowlers.

Wicket keeper, Megan Curry took 2 catches and Heidi Bergen lead the way claiming 2 wickets.

Dec 12th: One Tree Hill its their way to Two Wells and got the start they were after getting Lachlan Goss out in the first over.

The middle order of Michael Dimasi (25), Steve Lynch(27) and Lee Henderson (34) kept the run rate ticking over with some elegant strokes, taking the total to a defendable 163.

One Tree Hill were in a huge rush to get home and that is why they started 2 for 5 off Lachlan Goss's first over, with Goss taking a wicket on the first and third ball of the innings.

Lee Henderson pitched in again with 4 for 17 and Dylan Wise 2 for 35 leaving the away side all out after 25 overs for 119.

Dec 14th: I had the pleasure of umpiring and witnessing the game the women played on Monday,

which had a bit of everything.

Chasing 163, they lost Megan Curry on the first ball of the day.

Every shot Heidi Bergen and Leanne Pool made seemed to be hit straight to a fielder and then Heidi was given LBW after a thick inside edge for 37 just before drinks.

Leanne and Jess Pool had a 41-run partnership taking them to 112.

With only 1 wicket remaining with 8 overs to go, Caroline Hardiman held up her end to allow Leanne to belt some well placed boundaries and with scores tied was dropped at a short mid wicket to score the winning runs.

Dublin came narrowly close to scoring its first for the season but it was our girls who got theirs instead.

As we head to the Christmas break, it is pleasing to see Lachlan Goss is sitting in the number one position as the league's leading wicket taker for Grade 3 with 34 wickets…double the amount of the second placed bowler.

I currently sit second on the fielding with 8 catches and a run out, two shy of the leading fielder.

Teams competing in the Bowls SA Pennant competition are nearing the half way mark with mixed results.

The top teams on Saturday and Wednesday are in the top two, as is the third side on Saturday.

Twilight bowls has been well attended with an average of 30 people enjoying a game of bowls and good company. Ted Jaeger and his band of helpers ensure everyone enjoys the experience.

The club recently hosted a round of the Taylor Cup Challenge with both greens at capacity. Two Wells had a win on the night!

Club Championship tournaments are underway.This year the Prior Family Men's Pairs and Ladies Pairs finals are being played on the same day.

The painting and updating of the clubrooms is almost complete – this has brightened up the area for the many other events at the club, including the Antique Roadshow, hosted by the council, Probus meetings, birthday parties and invitational tournaments.

Twilight bowls kicks off again on the Tuesday January 12, with a 6.30pm for 7pm start.

Adelaide was full of activity recently as 4000 school aged students from various countries in the Pacific region converged on the city to compete in the Pacific school games.

The games are held every four years and competitors between the ages of 10 to 19 years from at least 12 countries, including every Australian state and territory, competed from November 21 to 29.

Swimming, diving, basketball, touch football, baseball, softball, football (soccer), table tennis and goalball featured in the 2015 Games.

Angle Vale’s very own Emma and Harry Pannell represented South Australia in numerous swimming events both gaining many personal best times.

Emma was part of a 4 x 100m freestyle relay team that just got out and touched on the wall to finish in fourth place. n Continued page 26

Nov 20th: It was pleasing to hear the under 10s achieved their first victory of the season, defeating Dublin at home.

They made 114 off 25 overs with Harry Robinson top scoring with 29 retired and then bowled out Dublin for 90, with Leo taking 4 wickets and Barnett 3.

This is a huge effort considering eight weeks prior we didn't have a side, so keep up the good work boys – here’s to more wins next year!

Nov 21st: Two Wells played at Salisbury North

On a lighter note I rang up Triple M and won a voucher for a meat store due to our last four batsmen making ducks, including skipper, Travis Wake, and myself.

Salisbury North was given the task to survive 15 overs before stumps, nearly managing this as Lachlan Goss forgot his famous headband, but with the last ball of the day, Corey Carter took a wicket with the help of Travis Wake. n Continued page 27
