It was only a matter of “thyme” before the herb garden at Angle Vale Primary School took off, with Year 6 and 7 students now marketing and selling their fresh herbs through “Virgara Fruit and Veg” shop at Angle Vale.

The students even have their own label, “Herbalicious,” and each herb packet has a hand drawn colourful label, with names such as “Ticking Thyme Bomb” and “Cutie Parsley Pie.” Year 6/7 teacher, Steve Brenecki, introduced this new enterprise, teaching the 27 students in his class the process of business operation, under the subject “Economics and Business.”

“This covers a range of subjects, including Maths and Science, along with planning, marketing and research tasks” Steve said.

“Last year we did it as part of a science topic, but this year it had a business focus.”

He took the class to Virgara’s shop where they learnt about running a small business and then went to Foodland to learn about running a big business. The students researched what produce to grow and set about preparing garden beds and planting seeds.

The herbs grown include rosemary, sorrel, basil, mint, chives, river mint, oregano, garlic, parsley, coriander and thyme.

Their hard work has resulted in their first delivery of freshly packed herbs to Virgara’s Fruit and Veg last week.

The students are now looking at their next enterprise which may be looking at fruit trees!

Mallala Mayor exits DUNCAN Kennington has announced his pending resignation as mayor of District Council of Mallala, citing health reasons.

He made the announcement through a public statement released last week.

“With regret I find that on health grounds I must tender my resignation as mayor of District Council of Mallala, effective Friday, November 27,” Mr Kennington said.

“I commend the tireless efforts of the council staff and the selfless efforts of the volunteers of the district.

“I wish our district all the best into the future.”

Mr Kennington was first installed as mayor in November 2012, in a time when councillors chose the mayor from the group of elected

members every 12 months.

He was re-elected in 2013 under the same process and became the first mayor elected by the community in last year’s local government elections.

His unexpected exit now means residents will need to go back to the polls in coming months to elect a new mayor.

Deputy mayor, Marcus Strudwicke, will continue as acting

mayor in the interim.

He confirmed his interest in contesting the election, having worn the mayoral robes in several stints before Mr Kennington took over.

“It certainly will be my intention and I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a few candidates,” Mr Strudwicke said.

“At this stage, the current difficulties regarding council and its relationship with the community

should be priority number one the new mayor should work on addressing.”

He felt Mr Kennington’s resignation was unfortunate.

“He was the first popularly elected mayor, active in the community at civic functions and attending a lot of local events,” Mr Strudwicke said. n Continued page 3.

Leigh Russell, hopes the championships will give Samuel a platform to assess his running ability against other students and possibly even catch the eye of professional trainers.

“The thing about Samuel is not only is he talented in everything that he does but he’s really coachable too,” Leigh said.

“His (running) technique is just outstanding, he’s always willing to learn and he has a great attitude.

“Now he’ll have the chance to see where he sits on a national scale.

“The school is really proud of his efforts so far and wish him the best at the championships.”

Having never attended Little Athletics or had professional coaching before, Samuel is looking forward to the championships and hopes he can better his personal best time for the 100m sprint of 14.11 seconds.

The National SAPSASA Athletics Championships will be held at the newly built Woden Athletics Centre in Canberra from December 4-8.

Take a good look at this young face, there’s every chance we’ll be seeing more of it in the future, who knows, maybe even one day representing Australia.

That’s the feeling behind 11-year-old, Year 5 Two Wells Primary School student, Samuel Harnas, who has just been chosen as part of the South Australian SAPSASA Athletics team to compete at the national championships in Canberra next month.

TWPS believes Samuel is the first student from the school to be selected in the state athletics team in more than 20 years.

This year the team has almost 80 students from schools across the state competing in a variety of track and field events including sprints, relays, discus, high jump and shot put.

Samuel will compete in the 12-year-old and under boys 100m sprint as well as the 8x100m relay and the 4x100m relay events.

While running is a new venture for Samuel, he appears to have the “sporty” gene, playing soccer for Virginia United, football for Gaza and cricket for Angle Vale.

Brothers Alan and James Ford are doing their bit to help raise funds for cancer research, with the pair set to shave their heads next month. Alan, 12 and James, 10 have had more than their fair share of grief due to cancer, losing their “Poppy”, to prostate cancer in 2007, then their Aunty Gail, to ovarian cancer in 2010 and lastly their Grandma, in 2013, to bowel cancer.

“When they started to grow their hair, we made a joint decision to let it grow until the beginning of summer and try to raise some money for cancer research,” explains proud mum, Robyn, who will participate on a smaller scale by colouring her hair green and purple. The family is conservatively hoping to reach $500 and will conduct the shaving at the Two Wells Primary School’s end of year concert on December 1 at 5.30pm. Two Wells Scouts assistant Joey leader, Skye “Possum” MacDonald, who has a Certificate 3 in Hairdressing, will brandish the “shears” and do the honours for the brothers.

New era for Angle Vale football Les Pearson reports: THE Community Football League has rubber stamped Angle Vale Football Club’s inclusion into theAdelaide Plains Football League for 2016.

APFL clubs voted on the matter at their recent AGM and that decision was forwarded to the CFL’s Investigation Committee for confirmation, which was announced late last week.

Owls president, Trevor Spong, released a statement when informed of the decision and said there would be some challenges as the club adapted to its new country surrounds.

“But I am confident we have a club filled with the right people to face these,” he said.

“The introduction of new senior and junior football games on the same day at the same ground is a significant step towards the ‘one club’ culture we have been promoting over the past year.”

The club will continue its current suite of junior sides in the North Eastern Metro competition played on Sunday and some Friday evenings, and also submit under eight, 11, 14 and 17 teams in the APFL’s junior grades.

These teams compete before the senior sides on Saturdays in theAPFL. “(This) is a great opportunity as we are now able to provide a player pathway from juniors into seniors within the same football league,” Mr Spong said.

The Angle Vale Netball Club’s affiliation bid with the Adelaide Plains NetballAssociation was also accepted on November 10.

“This creates an opportunity to strengthen both clubs and, for families that wish to participate in both sports, provides the ability to do so together,” Mr Spong added.

The club will be asking families to consider which competition they would like their children to compete in over coming weeks.

Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, has signalled his intentions to run for the mayoral position, about 12 months after losing the mayoral election by just 14 votes to Mr Kennington.

“I’ll put my hat in the ring, I got so close last time, so we will see what happens,” he said.

Councillor, Karen McColl, who was deputy mayor for 12 months before being dethroned by Cr Strudwicke last week, said she had not fully considered if she would contest the election.

“It’s not a decision I will take lightly,” she said.

Cr McColl was acting mayor in Mr Kennington’s recent absence and chaired the lively special meet-

ing at the Mallala Institute when council opted to take the shift of administration to Two Wells off the table.

“I probably had the most trying time of it with the current situation at hand,” she said.

“I only found out at 10am that day that I would be doing it, which is a tall order for anyone in that position.”

Cr McColl also had concerns for Mr Kennington.

“It’s concerning for everyone, staff and councillors, for him to resign due to the reasons stated,” she said.

“It’s a sad way for anyone to go out but I wish him all the best and hope he enjoys some decent recovery time.”

Throw out the pumpkin & let’s bring on the BBQ THE Australian community is largely divided on Halloween celebrations and for that reason, I think we should not just erase it from our calendars and culture, but replace it with something we would all get around.

Aussies love a good celebration, all the usual holidays are appropriately acknowledged with parties and merriment.

But Halloween falls well short of rivalling any of those annual events entrenched in national tradition.

Those who oppose the spooky celebrations often cite it as an “Americanised” influence on Australian culture.

Halloween has mainly Celtic origins but rose to popularity in the USA during the 19th century.

While it has not fully caught on in the Land Down Under, the local following has grown in recent years.

The traditionalists don’t like it and I’m well and truly in that camp.

I do not look forward to strange kids knocking on my door asking for sweets, as I have not prepared for it, nor do I feel obligated to provide someone else’s children with confectionery.

Imagine if the same policy applied at Christmas and the little ones roamed the streets hitting up neighbours for gifts. Madness!

Anti-Halloween rant aside, rather than ditch the concept altogether, I propose to introduce

One that we would all (well, most of us anyway) get around.

One suggestion could be National Barbecue Day. Everyone loves a barbie.

The USA actually has a day dedicated to the hotplate (July 4), amongst more than 175 days dedicated to food or drink awareness.

Surprisingly, Australia only has National Burger Day (May 28) to celebrate.

The best thing about the celebrations we currently recognise are the gatherings with friends and family, and food is often the centrepiece on these occasions.

I do look at the American tradition of Thanksgiving and think I’d like a piece of that here.

National Barbecue Day ticks those boxes. No presents, no carols, no dress ups required. Just slap some meat on, bring out the thousand island dressing, get the eskies iced up and toast the late spring weather as the mercury heads up.

The only thing missing is live sport on TV. Perhaps the day could be a moveable feast to accommodate a major competitive event.

All these details could be sorted in time.

Classic cars roll up Two Wells had its own small taste of the Bay to Birdwood on Wednesday September 30, when a handful of classic cars rolled into the township for a scheduled visit to the Two Wells War Memorial.

Marvellous spring weather welcomed the crowd of about 20 people who were on an organised run as part of the official activities that take place either side of the actual Bay to Birdwood staged event.

Maitland Auto Preservation Society, generally referred to as MAPS, is the historic motor vehicle club of the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, and the organisers of the day’s events.

Cars left Glandore earlier that morning, with Two Wells as their first stop, where they were given

Mike Osborne, MAPS magazine editor, had heard about the War Memorial and paid an earlier visit to the town, to check the suitability of the site for the upcoming run.

“It is really quite lovely and with the bakery close by, we thought it would be a good first stop, and we thought it would combine well with the sites that followed.”

Mallala RAAF War cemetery was the second scheduled visit,

with the day concluding at Balaklava, perusing both the Centenary Hall Museum and Urlwin Park Museum.

The small group of car enthusiasts were pleasantly surprised with the township, the bakery and were most impressed by the War Memorial.

‘It’s great,” commented Margaret Edwards from Largs Bay, “the memorial for the dogs is beautiful, and so is the whole area, it is very well done.”

And it appears that the long drive from Yorke Peninsula is no deterrent for the car enthusiasts as further runs are in the pipeline for the region, Virginia Nursery being earmarked as a future destination for the motor club.

Champion continues call for SA sub build FEDERAL Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion, continued his calls for the government to end speculation and provide some positive economic news for the state by building 12 new submarines in South Australia.

Speaking at Parliament House, Canberra, recently, Mr Champion said a delegation of ship builders from the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union was in Canberra to lobby their cause.

“What they are seeking from the government is clarity and firm decision making around jobs,” Mr Champion said.

“From my own electorate, we are looking down the barrel at losing 10,000 automotive jobs.”

He said the government should stop stalling on the matter and make the announcement.

“They can guarantee an Australian build and guarantee a continuous build by sticking to their promise made by the defence spokesman to build the 12 subs in South Australia,” Mr Champion said.

“This is about holding the government to their word about jobs in SA. “We really need this government to piss or get off the pot, on jobs, on tax, on a range of other things.

“They’ve really just got to start governing and stop talking.”

A new group in the district hopes to improve community connections, foster strong relationships and provide residents with access to advice, information and services.

The recently formed Adelaide Plains Community Connections combines the resources and skills of about eight different groups, including the Department for Education and Childhood Development (DECD), AngliCare, Northern Area Community and Youth Services, Centrelink, and the Two Wells Primary School.

The group hopes to provide young people and their families with access to service providers and services with a focus on health, education and government as well as explore recreational and sporting opportunities and areas for future development and family support. Carol Toole from the education departments’ ICAN partnerships for learning program, says the group is especially keen to involve young people in the process.

“One of our key goals is to ask young people what they think,” Carol said.

“They are our future and they have so many great ideas.”

With this in mind students from Two Wells Primary School’s student action team have joined the committee.

TWPS counselor, Zoe Evans, said the school’s involvement was positive on so many different levels and the students were looking forward to working with the other members of the committee.

War heroes honoured Bec O’Brien reports:

Against the fitting backdrop of the complete Afghanistan memorial and refurbished WW1 monument, Two Wells held its annual Remembrance Day service on Wednesday November 11.

The lovely spring day saw around 100 people gather for the service and pay tribute to those soldiers who have lost their lives fighting for our country.

Led by local RSL member, John Atherton, poppies were handed out to those in attendance as wreaths were laid in honour of fallen Australians and in appreciation for those who are currently still serving.

Members of the Two Wells Scout Group and the Two Wells Primary School’s Student Action Team formed a guard of honour near the WW1 memorial monument as a minute silence was held following the playing of the Last Post and both the Australian and New Zealand national anthems.

After the service a sausage sizzle was held back at the RSL clubrooms, with people taking the opportunity to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and have a chat about their links to the armed forces and war history.

Economic benefits from move

O

n Monday evening, November 9, true democracy was killed by the vote of councillors of the District Council of Mallala.

They were at a special meeting called to receive a report on a proposed move of the main council office from Mallala to Two Wells.

After the acceptance of the report there was to be a motion to put the whole concept out for public consultation.

Unfortunately, one councillor immediately stated “I will not accept this report” and proceeded to move an alternative motion: “That council resolves not to proceed with the proposed relocation of council’s principal office or administration staff to Two Wells during the current term of council.”

This motion was passed. Only two councillors voted against it.

For some time a very vocal minority of residents/ratepayers has been spreading the word that many millions was to be spent in Two Wells for a huge civic centre and council facility.

There are no plans for those facilities to be constructed.

There have been some concepts prepared but they have not been considered as viable for many years into the future, owing to financial constraints.

The recent proposal was for a

maximum of $250,000.

I read in its entirety the full agenda document, which was available for public scrutiny on the DCM website.

This raised some very interesting points in favour of the proposal, some of which were of significant financial and productivity benefits of a move to Two Wells.

1. Staff in the office at Mallala are coming to work and having to clean their desk surfaces of pigeon excreta, which is falling through the cracked ceiling.

This is a severe OH&S matter and cannot continue.

The problem of mice infestation through cracks in the walls has been noted with mirth by the ratepayers association members.

2. Internet service to the council offices is virtually non-existent from 4pm daily when school students arrive home and log on.

Therefore productivity efficiency is significantly affected – even emails at times cannot get through.

NBN will be in Two Wells in the next few months and council productivity would be improved with higher IT accessibility.

Several thousands are spent each year on couriering council documents to Dublin, Lewiston and Two Wells for each of the councillors to ensure they receive them and they are not missed through the poor internet service.

3. Travel subsidies would be significantly lower with a relocation to Two Wells as staff would have less kilometres to travel each day.

Only three council office staff live in Mallala. These savings are approximately $24,000 per year.

All the above points would have been presented to the whole of the ratepayers of the DCM had this proposal been put to public consultation – and the ratepayers/ residents could have decided and lodged their opinion which would have then been a directive to the councillors.

I would have been totally accepting of the result of the public consultation, whichever way it ended, as it would have been a democratic result.

I was very ashamed of the ‘mob mentality’ of most of the gallery attending the meeting last Monday night.

Their noise and actions showed complete disregard for meeting protocol, and the statements I heard from people sitting around me amount to harassment and bullying.

Those attitudes are not constructive and will not improve the situation for anyone who resides in the District Council of Mallala.

Planning for 2016 As usual the year is flying by and we are getting closer to the final weeks of 2015. It is a useful time to reflect on the year that has been and to start planning for next year.

One of the things that I have planning for in 2016 is for families in the North to have continued access to high quality pre-school services.

I recently met with the education department and the heads of the pre-school services for Virginia and Two Wells.

There is expected growth in the North and we have to make sure we plan for it.

We had a very productive talk about making sure that local families don’t miss out on being able to send their children to a pre-school nearby.

Trying to find out who the district of Lewiston was named after was like trying to find a needle in a haystack, according to localAnne Porter, who this year completed writing an historical book about the area.

So it was only fitting when it came time to give her research a title “Needle in a Haystack” fit perfectly.

Officially launched on Monday November 16 at the Two Wells Public Library, Anne’s 160-page book is an historical account of the formation of the Lewiston area and a collection of facts, photos and stories of the events of the 1800s.

This book has taken more than two decades to complete, with Anne initially starting her research in 1989, just two years after moving to the area from Elizabeth Downs with husband Patrick and son Andrew.

“I wanted to know how Lewiston got its name,” Anne explained as to the motivation behind her book.

“No-one could tell me and I couldn’t find any supporting documentation anywhere.

“No matter where I went to find things there

Bec O’Brien reports: was nothing that would give me a clue who it was named after.

“As a lover of history I decided that there had to be someone or something that could lead me to the needle in the haystack.

“There had to be an explanation and some way, some how I was determined to find it.”

Born in Ireland, Anne has always had an interest in and passion for history, and believes this book had to be written to help re-establish Lewiston’s identity.

After many years of research, and having written her own family history in the meantime, the book about Lewiston started to come together, with Anne really putting pen to paper in 2013.

Anne says she only discovered who the name Lewiston honoured last year, stumbling across a newspaper article, which led her to further research at the national archives.

Lewiston was officially proclaimed in 1990, when the boundaries of what was known as the Gawler River area changed, a process in which Anne was involved, but it was

“Hopefully this book will assist future generations in their search for

knowledge and information and to identify with Lewiston and what the district represents,” Anne said.

For the record (sorry to spoil the surprise if you are

planning on reading the book), according to Anne, Lewiston was named after James William Lewis of Adelaide, who was the Post Master General from 1861-1869.

After a very busy year, president Bev Smith-Trim expressed her thanks for the efforts of all members and looked forward with optimism to the year ahead.

The audited financial report was presented by treasurer Evelyn Dyer and was accepted.

All positions were then declared vacant and the following elections were held.

After he left considerable discussion ensued and the members directed the president to

access some guidance and information about the recent events in the District Council of Mallala area.

Members are looking forward to the Christmas Parade on December 11.

This year there are 32 different stalls and some new entries for the actual parade.

We are hoping for great weather so that we have another fantastic community evening.

We received updates from other members on the Craft Shop, also Port

Gawler Wharf and Middle Beach projects and look forward to progress in the future on all these topics.

Members of the region are welcome to our meetings at any time – either as a visitor or to join the team.

We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm in the hall of the Catholic Church in Two Wells.

We extend seasons greetings to all the community and the wish for peace on earth in 2016.

Kate adds new level of service Yesterday marked a huge milestone for Two Wells Chemplus, with employee and born-and-bred local, Kate Lange, becoming a fully qualified pharmacist.

Kate, 22, completed a four year university degree at Uni SA in Adelaide, and then had to complete 12 month on-the-job internship training at a pharmacy.

“I’d worked at Two Wells Chemplus while I was at uni, so it was great I could complete my internship here,” Kate said.

To complete her studies, Kate sat a written exam in June and an oral exam in October, which she said was quite nerve wracking!

She also had to complete 1824 hours of supervised practice, which was reached on Tuesday. Not that she was counting the hours!

Kate is the first of her group of 150 graduates to complete her supervised hours.

Kate works for pharmacist Matthew Girgolas, and ironically, Matthew’s wife taught Kate at school!

Shamus tops the class

Angle Vale resident Shamus Schutt was presented with the Dux Award at the recent graduation ceremony held to induct new firefighters into the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS).

Member for Light, and Minister for Emergency Services, Tony Piccolo, was on hand to congratulate Shamus.

The Dux Award is presented to the graduate who has not only achieved the highest standard of both academic and practical performance but also demonstrated certain qualities throughout the course.

The MFS emblem – the Fire Star, best represents these qualities.

Each point of the star represents a virtue - these are: Loyalty, Sympathy, Tact, Dexterity, Observation, Explicitness, Perseverance and Gallantry.

Shamus was one of 18 new recruits to the MFS and the group’s journey began with a competitive selection and recruitment process involving around

1300 applicants from both metropolitan and regional South Australia, followed by a grueling 14-week training program.

Their training program included general fire-fighting exercises, breathing apparatus training, operating in confined spaces, compartment firefighting as well as a range of technical rescue situations.

MFS Chief Officer Greg Crossman said the 18 recruits exemplified the fire service’s focus on safety and the importance of teamwork while serving the South Australian community.

“Our recruits have worked hard as a team to gain the core skills that will enable them to carry out their duties in a safe, effective and efficient manner,” Mr Crossman said.

A former teacher, 30-year-old Shamus, who lives with his wife Linda and two sons Cade and Jude, enjoys spending time with his family and on his days off, growing fruit and vegetables in his garden at home.

TWO WELLS BLUE LIGHT Our recent Halloween disco was a great success with most kids getting into the spirit with excellent costumes and make-up.

Just a reminder, that glowstick products should not be brought to the discos, as some contain a substance that could pose a safety risk if broken.

There is a selection of safe glowstick products on sale at the discos for those who wish to accessorize or stand out in the crowd.

Our final Blue Light disco for the year will be held on December 11, following the Two Wells Christmas Street Parade.

The start time for this disco only, will be 7.30pm, to accommodate children so they can watch the parade.

The disco will be held at the Two Wells Community Centre, Old Port Wakefield Rd, Two Wells. $5 entry.

Finish time will be 9.30pm as usual. The Two Wells Blue Light committee would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers who have helped out this year, including the South Australian Police officers and cadets who supported us.

Anne’s European vacation Eiffel Tower, Paris That’s me standing (in the distance) in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

I left home on June 11, 2015 returning July 27 (almost seven weeks).

It was an amazing trip comprising three tours and a few one/two day trips fitted in between.

I had been to London then onto the Continent nine years ago, but wanted to connect with my family roots (both sides), so this was the year for that.

Just walking the streets of a tiny little village (Fordingbridge) where my Dad’s people came from, then later a town called Liskeard in Cornwall where Mum’s family came

from gave me such a warm fuzzy feeling.

Just before I left home, I discovered that the couple married in Cornwall, later immigrating to Australia, and are actually buried in the Two Wells Cemetery!

The tour around the British Isles was great.

The Paris to Paris Battlefield Tour was just meant to be “an interesting four days” to fill-in before the next tour from Paris to Rome (part of which I had done before, but needed to return to just to see Paris and Rome one more time).

However, I found the Battlefield tour was extremely absorbing and completely overwhelming.

I’m not one to be easily moved or shaken, but I was completely bowled over with the enormity of the history of it all.

That said, the whole trip was magnificent.

I say “trip” as seven weeks on the road is heavy going….no holiday, but an amazing experience.

So that in a nutshell was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. Stay tuned we are off to America next September!!

River Thames, Venice No-one goes to Venice without a Gondola ride. It was Chris’s birthday the day we were there, so we had our own musicians in the gondola with us…very romantic!

An Irish Village Big Ben, London Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament on the banks of the Thames River is walking distance from Westminster Abbey. I recorded Big Ben chiming 12 noon.

Australian War Memorial at Villes Bretonneux is huge. I’m a heights person, but another tourist took the photo from top for me. The amount of headstones (some named, others as contain unidentified) is hard to take in.

Virginia Country Women’s Association branch president and Two Wells resident, Evelyn Dyer, had a brush with royalty recently when Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, visited the Barossa.

Evelyn is also is group president of the Barossa CWA, with Freeling, Gawler, Mallala, Rosewood, Tanunda and Virginia making up the Barossa CWA group.

Tanunda CWA had their rooms renovated recently and it now forms part of the “Cycle Hub”.

Consequently, the administration of the rooms has now been

handed to the Barossa Council and it was decided to rename the rooms as “Tanunda Community CWA Rooms”.

With their Royal Highnesses, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visiting Tanunda, Mrs Norma Leirsch (President) and Mrs Lynette Brew (Secretary) of Tanunda CWA were invited to be involved in the royal visit with the renaming of the CWA rooms together with Mrs Linda Bertram (State President SACWA), Mrs Evelyn Dyer (President Barossa CWA Group) and Miss Lauren Reid (Adelaide CWA).

The CWA members were presented to Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, who then unveiled the plaque with the new name.

I feel very privileged and honoured to have been a part of this unforgettable visit and Camilla was very friendly and approachable.

CWA Group News On Monday November 16, Virginia CWA hosted a Barossa Group meeting to discuss CWA general business.

It was the final meeting for the year with a Christmas theme and was enjoyed by all.

Just a sample of underground bunkers that were dug to service the troops as the battle raged above.

Apparently hundreds of soldiers occupied the tunnels ready for the assaults. The tunnels carried supplies etc as well as being packed with explosives, meant to blow up the enemy camped above. We visited craters that were the results of the explosions.

Trenches, Canadian Museum Trenches at the Canadian Museum. The Canadians chose not to exhume the remains of many hundreds of corpses, and re-bury like other nationalities (including Australia).

That is why walking is only allowed in certain places, as well as the risk of unexploded mines, even after 100 years!

Water deep to beat Summer heat

In the Garden with Amateur Gardener Here are a few tips to help our gardens in the Northern Plains survive our long hot summers.

Planting local indigenous plants is one sensible clue but also other hardy plants may be used, as well as planting under shade for all of the day or just to prevent scorching in the hot afternoon sun.

Long, deep and less frequent watering rather than little and often sprinkles encourages deeper root growth.

A layer of mulch to keep the moisture in is an easy way to heat proof the garden.

Before you spread your mulch (if it has not already been done) give your garden a long deep drink of water, then apply the mulch & then another long deep drink of water to make sure the mulch and soil underneath are both moist.

Your plants will thank you for it!

Adelaide and the Northern Plains can certainly grow beautiful roses.

We must relish what we can do the best.

However we need to watch for black spot.

A good preventative spray for Black Spot and Powdery Mildew on zucchinis, cucumbers and melons is to use 9 parts of water to 1 part milk.

Spray weekly and avoid overhead watering if possible.

On Wednesday October 30 I attended another successful Long Plains Red Cross afternoon tea.

It was an action packed afternoon with various local entertainers including, Magic Moments from Parham, who performed various dances in different costumes, Harmony (Helen Verner + Anne Arbon), who sang several songs, Amy Paech, who performed several calisthenics routines, and Deanna Jarman, who performed several classical guitar pieces.

Of course I purchased several typical Allan Parker plants whilst I had the opportunity.

I attended the Adelaide Flyway Festival recently, celebrating the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary.

The open-air event at St Kilda was a lot bigger and better attended than I expected; helped by perfect spring weather.

A few of the many events that occurred were face painting, Kaurna traditional dance, bird watching tours and kite making.

A large part of the bird sanctuary is in our district.

The Antiques Roadshow was held on Tuesday October 27.

The event was so popular that tickets ran out two weeks prior.

Paul Bartlett appraised family treasures.

He kindly remained afterwards to value the antiques of a long queue of interested parties.

Unfortunately, my 1980s coca-cola phone (usable) is only worth $50-$100. But the afternoon tea prepared by Sam Prescott, Lily Konicek, Adele Ray and Bev Molloy was ample compensation.

Lastly, I went to the Long Plains dance on a Sunday afternoon in November.

The dance floor was full of people waltzing to the music by Peter Hutchins.

Delicious sandwiches were prepared by Margaret Jenkin, Val Daniel, Debra Hawkin, and Jenny McArdle. Jess Parker managed the entrance.

Amid a buoyant atmosphere, 150 people gathered in Two Wells on Thursday November 12 to officially launch the release of the new “Eden” land and housing development.

The land launch marks the start of the long-awaited development north of Two Wells, where Eden is one of two villages that form the Hickinbotham Group’s $1.225 billion Two Wells township expansion.

It is expected this expansion will create more than 3000 regional jobs during the next 20 years and comprise more than 2500 new homes.

Speaking at the launch, Hickinbotham’s managing director, Michael Hickinbotham, said the rural living estate of Eden would comprise 235 allotments ranging from 1200m2 to two hectares in size, and will complement the master-planned Liberty village, which will feature 354 residential allotments in its first section, a birth to Year 12 Lutheran school, wetlands, recreational facilities, parklands, waste water treatment plant and shopping precinct.

Michael said a variety of diverse housing options and choices to suit a range of families and local people would be available with this land release, and the project had taken many years to get to this point.

“This is an auspicious occasion,” he said.

“We have worked in partnership with the Mallala council, and the town community.

“We have engaged deeply with the community.

“We have listened to their views about how they want their town to grow.

“Eden will have larger rural living allotments to give people space for larger homes and backyards.

“People can have more land, perhaps for a hobby farm or a veggie patch, while only being 45 minutes from Adelaide.”

Bec O’Brien reports: the Two Wells township expansion is well-planned and delivered local services, jobs and infrastructure in a timely fashion in line with community growth.

Acting District Council of Mallala mayor, Karen McColl, reinforced the collaborative aspect of the development, saying the launch was a celebration of many different bodies working together.

“It has been a long process but one we are pleased to see delivered,” Mrs McColl said.

“It is the first development of its kind to have agreed development deeds in place ahead of growth, to ensure the timely delivery of infrastructure.

“It is envisaged that the growth will create about 3000 new homes, so it is important that under the direction of council extensive best practice community engagement and place-making is provided to support service provision to both the existing and the incoming residents, ensuring all have opportunity and involvement throughout the process.”

Mingling at the launch on Thursday November 12 were dignitaries, including Legislative Council member, John Dawkins, and Member for Goyder and Shadow Regional Minister, Steven Griffiths as well as Regional Australia Development chairman, Ivan Venning, who rubbed shoulders with District Council of Mallala CEO, Katrina Marton, Two Wells Regional Action Team members as well as a broad range of invited local business people and residents.

Lutheran Schools Association deputy director, Loyd Fyffe, also spoke at the launch, saying the proposed new school would incorporate a much needed high school for the township, which is earmarked to open in 2018 and already has 200 people registering their interest.

The first blocks of land in the Eden release went on sale on Saturday November 14.

Woman in Black, light breezy read

Two Wells Scouts Samantha Schaffer, Jasmin Kluse, Zachary McDonnell and Alan Ford (standing) are counting down the weeks until the 2016 Australian Jamboree in New South Wales.

Locals get prepared for Scout experience Four local scouts will travel to Sydney next year to attend the 2016 Scout Jamboree.

Held every three years at different locations across Australia, the 2016 event will be held at Cataract Scout Park, just south of Sydney.

The two-week event will see more than 12,000 young people camp together and share in a variety of fun and adventurous activities designed to challenge the scouters, encourage teamwork and build relationships.

While a great deal of the

Bec O’Brien reports activities will be held onsite, such as abseiling, BMX riding and a high ropes course, there will also be a range of offsite activities including taking the scouts on tours of Sydney and visiting local theme parks.

Heading to AJ2016 (as the event is known), from Two Wells is young scouts Zachary McDonnell, 14, and twelveyear-olds Jasmin Kluse, Alan Ford, and Samantha Schaffer.

The quartet is part of a

35-member troop, which has representatives from Belair, Greenwith, Athlestone and Ingle Farm Scout groups.

In October they attended the “Shakedown Camp” at Woodhouse Activity Centre in Piccadilly to meet other members of the SA contingent and are looking forward to AJ2016.

It is a big thing for these young scouters, as they leave behind parents and friends and have to rely on themselves and each other while they are away.

the event would build on the scouting skills the participants had learnt and teach them much more at the same time.

“The kids will put into practice all the things they have learnt at Scouts so far,” Andrew said.

“It will be an amazing experience for them.”

Each month the Two Wells Book Club will bring you a review of the book that has been read by the group the previous month.

The Book Club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library.

This month’s book is ‘The Women In Black’ by Madeleine St John.

Set in Sydney in the late 1950’s in a department store, not unlike David Jones, the lives of four very different women converge in the Ladies’ Frocks Department.

The Women in Black are the sales ladies that endure the pre and post-Christmas rush and we come to know their everyday lives outside of the ordered, yet hectic, world of cocktail and model gowns.

Lisa, the young and naïve, yet highly intelligent school girl who has just finished her final exams, is taken under the wing of the older, strong and mysterious Hungarian woman, Magda.

Lisa’s experience throughout the story shows the changing attitudes towards the role of women, their education and career opportunities, during the time period.

Magda and her husband Stefan are Hungarian refugees and purportedly ‘very unhappy’ in this country devoid of culture, although their social life speaks to a more positive sentiment.

It is the character of Magda that reflects the cultural injection of continental Europeans to post-war Australians. Patty is childless and caught in an uneventful marriage.

Whilst Faye, unmarried, has a full social calendar of dinners and dances with many suitors, but is yet to be swept away by someone who is willing to marry her.

This all changes over the summer and happy endings are served out to all.

Although the novel was an easy read, many book club members conceded that it was not a book that they would usually read or even recommend.

Although there was light spattering of humour throughout, many members failed to find it remarkable.

The second half gained momentum and was more enjoyable for most, however it failed to strike a chord with readers. It gently spoke to the socially accepted behaviour as well as the social changes of the time.

Perhaps the greatest enjoyment found within the pages was for those members who were able to relate to, either the physical setting of the Sydney CBD and surrounding suburbs, or the time period that the story was set in.

This was the first of four novels of the late Madeleine St John, who, in 1997, was the first female Australian to be short-listed for the Booker Prize for her novel, ‘The Essence of the Thing’.

Locals caring for Cambodia Caring for Cambodia Briony and Mark ‘Bugs’ Thomson from Angle Vale answered a call from South Aussie with Cossi’s, Andrew Costello, to feed a family with a 50 kilo bag of rice. They donated $30 to his ‘Cows for Cambodia’ charity and the full amount was directed straight to a family in need in the poverty stricken country.

Each family that donated a bag had their name and a message written on it, and a photo was taken with the family who received it (pictured far right).

It was then posted on facebook, so that they could see their donation go straight to the families in need. Briony and Mark were pleased to see their contribution go straight to the family and confessed that it made them quite emotional. Thumbs up to the Thomson family, what generous hearts you have.

Soldier search Two Wells RSL is seeking information on two ex-servicemen who enlisted from Two Wells.

The RSL would love any photos, which would be scanned and returned to the owner, and/or a Service Number if possible. The first soldier’s name is F.D. Young, who enlisted from Two Wells but may not have come from the area. The second soldier is Curly Innes, who served in Japan during the period

1946 to 1950 and also may not have come from this area. Any assistance would be appreciated by the group, so if you can help out or the names ring a bell, contact RSL secretary, John Allen on Fridays at the RSL hall on 8520 2826 or 0411 894 245.

Movie Mayhem Two Wells residents were taken aback on Monday November 9 when a steady stream of trucks made their way into the town and set up camp around the football oval.

If the new signs over the Commercial Hotel didn’t give it away, then the camera crews eventually did.

The new six episode miniseries of Wolf Creek had begun production.

The crew were friendly and welcomed passersby to stop and take a look (check out some of the photos here which were posted on our Facebook page).

The show rolled out of town two days later on Wednesday November 11 and set up camp at Lower Light for the following two weeks.

John Jarratt, star of the first two movies, once again will play serial killer, Mick Taylor.

The series will be filmed in South Australia and screened on the video-on-demand service, Stan.

Jenny’s famous Carrot Cake This month’s recipe has won numerous awards at local shows and features in the Country Women’s Association’s newly released cookbook “Calendar of Cakes” (see separate story). A favourite with family and friends, Jenny Dowlings’ carrot cake is moist, easy to make and tastes delicious. Cook as one large cake or make into muffins, either way they’re sure to be a hit for morning or afternoon tea.

3/4 cup SR Flour 2/3 cup whole meal plain flour 3/4 cup of sugar 1 level teaspoon of mixed spice 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger 1 level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 3/4 cup chopped walnuts 2 cups grated carrot 1/2 cup sultanas ¼ cup of desiccated coconut 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 large eggs Sift flours, spices and bicarb soda together in large bowl and add other dry ingredients. Mix eggs, oil and vanilla together and add to dry mixture using a wooden spoon. Place the mixture in a deep 20cm square cake tin, which has been lined with two layers of baking paper. Bake in a moderate oven (170 fan forced) for 1 hour or until cooked when tested. Cool, remove from tin, peel off paper then top with Cinnamon Icing.

Can also be made into 12 muffins or 15 cup cakes just cook 25 to 30 minutes.

Cinnamon Icing: Beat 1 tablespoon of soft butter and 20 grams softened cream cheese together, add 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract, good squeeze lemon juice and about 1&1/4 cups sifted icing sugar mixture.

Spread on cooled cake, roughing with spatula and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Two Wells local and CWA Adelaide branch member, Jenny Dowling, has a recipe featured in the recently released CWA Calendar of Cakes cookbook.

Two Wells local, Jenny Dowling, has featured in the recently released South Australian Country Women’s Association’s Calendar of Cakes cookbook.

Almost 80 years after the first cookbook was produced – and 65 years after its first Calendar of Cakes – comes the latest addition to the SACWAs’ ‘Calendar’ series, which showcases more than 85 recipes from bakers around the state.

Jenny has been making her carrot cake with lemon and cinnamon icing for the past 30 years, and says it is has won numerous awards at country shows. Her recipe features as much local produce as possible, something she says the book’s editors were keen to promote.

“They were looking for recipes with a local flavour,” Jenny explained.

“The local markets around Virginia produce some of the best carrots, and I like to use locally grown sultanas and walnuts.”

Food editor and stylist, Fiona Roberts, and photographer and creative director, Jacqui Way, were assisted in the creation of Calendar of Cakes by Monique Bowley, who wrote about the tools of the trade, basic preparations, cake-making methods and general baking tips.

Former Adelaide Plains resident and star of the ABC’s Kitchen Cabinet, Annabel Crabb, officially

launched the book.

The book celebrates the resurgence of interest in membership of the SACWA by new and often younger members, many of whom are joining night branches, and are keen to learn the skills of baking as well as a variety of craft skills, while sharing friendship and giving voluntary service, which is still the foundation of the SACWA today.

SACWA state president, Linda Bertram, said the cookbook would not only provide valuable funding for the organisation, but would also assist the SACWA brand in reaching a wider audience outside its current membership, and encouraging new members to join.

This is vital for the long-term sustainability of the SACWA, she said, which needs strong membership to keep the not-for-profit organisation viable into the future.

“Put together using wisdom from the past together with expertise from the present, the cookbook draws upon recipes provided by SACWA members across South Australia and will make a great addition to any kitchen or collector’s shelf,” Ms Bertram said.

Challenges and Optimism As another Christmas season approaches, it is timely to reflect on a year that has again been challenging for our State as we work to stem the flow of regional job losses, particularly from manufacturing and mining industries.

With great frustration I report that of the $39 million promised for regions in 2014/15 by Minister for Regional Development Geoff Brock MP, only $5.2 million was spent on regional projects during that year, with the rest committed across future years. This is really not good enough when outcomes are so sorely needed now.

I was also disappointed with the recent corporate decision by Bank SA to close 20 country branches across the State, including branches in the Goyder communities of Balaklava, Wallaroo and Yorketown. This decision is one that makes it harder for all of us, and my thoughts are with the communities dealing with service reduction and job losses.

On 16 November State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall announced an Emergency Jobs Stimulus Package which includes cuts to business taxes, investment in jobcreating infrastructure projects, and relief for families and households struggling under spiralling cost of living pressures.

With regional prosperity key to SA’s economic growth, a continued focus in 2016 will be pushing for increased support for local business and industry, backing the hard working, innovative entrepreneurs in the regions, many of whom I have been privileged to meet.

In November I attended two major project launches, the $220 million Wallaroo Shores resort development on the 6th, and on the 14th, the Hickinbotham Group’s “Eden at Two Wells” first stage release of its $1.2 billion expansion project.

Indeed, the new year promises much for the Two Wells region, with funding being sought on the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme, and two local companies in D’Vine Ripe and Greenwheat Freekeh both announced as recipients of State grants in 2015.

Volunteers and community groups also continue to complete projects, and I have been pleased to support numerous applications for State Government funding. echo 20 eisteddfod Scholarship increased to $1,000; fourth cd recorded

At the recent AGM of the Adelaide Plains Male Voice Choir, the annual scholarship offered in conjunction with the Balaklava Eisteddfod, was increased from $500 to $1000.

The increase was made possible by the generosity of Balco Australia and Lyndoch Motors, who agreed to cover the increase.

Both companies have been very supportive of the choir for many years.

The scholarship, which has been awarded for the past 11 years, is offered to a vocal student aged between 15 to 20 years of age, who shows the most potential.

At the AGM, all positions in the choir were returned, before Musical

Director, Darrel Schutz gave his report.

The choir had a busy year, culminating in the recording of its fourth CD. Choir member, Alan Evans, who has experience in recording, worked with Darrel to produce the CD, which is hoped to be launched mid next year after all the paperwork and legalities have been completed.

Bookings have been received for next year, including full choir performances and the double quartet, which has been quite busy in the past year.

The choir was pleased to welcome new members during the year, and is always open to more men who love to sing!

Dressmaker delight Review: Jennifer Dowling This book has been described as an Australian gothic novel of love, hate and haute couture. Sometime in the 1950s, Tilly Dunnage, a Paris couturier, returns after 20 years to her home-town of Dungatar having been banished as a 10-year-old. Her intention is to visit her mother Molly then leave. Instead, she stays, and though she is still an outcast, her lush, exquisite dresses prove irresistible to the prim women of Dungatar.

While colliding with her past and exacting revenge in a most spectacular fashion upon the people who tormented her, she leaves behind a town in ruins.

The descriptive passages are sometimes comical and sometimes poignant, an odd sense of humour that had been described as a feral version of ‘Sea Change’, a television series shown at the same time the book was released in 2000.

The book was shortlisted for many awards and made the bestseller lists with the film rights being awarded in 2010. The film is an unconventional combining of hilarious comedy and manic drama that works well and with stars such as Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Hugo Weaving and Liam Hemsworth it is definitely worth seeing. I found having read the book first that the movie was easier to follow. I give it 5 stars.

Guns, cars feature at Shoot and Shine event Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club held a Fun Day on November 14.

Competitors shot a mixture of disciplines in the Shoot and Shine event which was organised by Carrie H. and Brian K. Several classic cars were also displayed by members on the day in a separate competition, which saw the likes of a Corvette Stingray, Ford Mustang, FX ute and MGB, as well as Harley Davidson motor cycles, roll into the club grounds.

Malcolm L., of Two Wells took the top prize for the display competition with his red Ford Mustang, just nudging out the crowd’s favourite, Carrie H.’s sleek Corvette Stingray.

Lunch was supplied by the club, and a convivial atmosphere in the Clubhouse was enjoyed by all.

Carrie H. and Brian K. organised the trophies, which were supplied by a local Two Wells business.

Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club held a combined Come and Try Games and Poles/ Grids and Flatwork Day on Sunday November 8.

Despite the warm weather, 15 horses and riders attended the event.

The group was split into two, with one group doing the games first and the other doing the poles, grids and flatwork, with the groups swapping after about an hour.

There were plenty of laughs to be had in the games area as everyone tried their hand (and their horses!) at events

such as Bending, Western Bending and the Can Race.

In the poles, grids and flatwork, there was the opportunity to be instructed in various elements, including working your horse over poles and achieving transitions as and when required.

It was great to see everyone having a good time and developing their skills along the way.

A big thank you to our poles, grids and flatwork instructor for the day, Ellen Steyn, and to R & J Rural Supplies in Two Wells for providing vouchers for the children who participated in the games.

Cricket season under way

The 2015-16 cricket season has well and truly started.

This year Two Wells has put in a senior mens and womens side, with an under 10s side too. If numbers increase with juniors, there is a chance to apply for another side before the year has ended.

Due to some juniors over the age of 10 that have never played cricket, the league granted waivers for players aged 11 to play in the under 10s side.

It was pleasing to see as many as 12 juniors out for their first training session at the beginning of October.

They opened the season with a lightning carnival in Salisbury on the 23rd, and although they came last, the games were played with high spirits and had plenty of laughs.

Minis debuted for the first time in many years.

This was hosted by Pat Wake and will continue during the school term, beginning at 5pm while the juniors start at 4.30pm.

The following is a wrap-up of the club’s recent games: Oct 10: PlayingAdelaide Warriors down at North Gate, Two Wells were forced to play a few "ring in" boys due to a wedding and with Lachlan Goss leading the way with bat made a modest total of 138 which had the Warriors tales up.

Tight bowling and excellent fielding kept the batting side to 92 with Lachlan Goss taking the first 5 wicket haul for the club and we all hope it won't be the last.

Will Hart also took 3 for 18.

Having to see out 13 overs Two Wells’ second innings didn't go too well with them finishing 4 for 41 at stumps.

A staggering 24 wickets were lost

Oct 12: The women’s side travel to Rose and Crown with a new look side, they had openers Megan Curry and Heidi Bergen plus Alison Eland and Caroline Hardiman, who all had a year off last year, making a return.

Two Wells were bowled out for 74 with Heidi Bergen top scoring with 10 runs who even admitted she was very rusty, but will show more improvement as the year continues.

Jessica Pool and Renae Smoult were both the second highest with 5 runs.

Oct 17: Two Wells lost the remaining wickets reasonably quickly leaving the home side to chase down a total of 119, losing half their wickets in the process.

Lachlan Goss falling one wicket short of claiming a 10-wicket match haul.

Oct 19: Leanne Pool was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 15 but even this effort wasn’t enough to secure victory as Rose and Crown finished on 160.

Oct 23: The under 10s hosted Angle Vale who made 137 from their 25 overs losing 6 wickets.

In reply TW were 3 for 97 after 25 overs, losing the game but showed there is a lot of potential in these young players.

Oct 24: The men hosted ACTO, who batted all day losing their last wicket during the last over.

Scoring 219 ACTO were aided with their batting with Two Wells dropping close to a dozen catches.

Captain Travis Wake took 3 for 53 and Lachlan Goss continued his

good form with another 4 wickets with 4 for 36.

Oct 26: The women had a day they would rather forget when they hosted Central United.

Having been dismissed for 54 with Rebecca Pool top scoring with 14, Two Wells had to bowl the remainder of the day and all of the following evening though Central United made the runs in the first week giving the girls plenty of bowling practice. Central United finished on 2 for 241.

Nov 7: Taking on North Pines, Two Wells were reinforced with Braidon Osborne joining his brother Joshuah at the club.

Corey Carter also played his first game for Two Wells and showed class with 60 runs even though he was caught over the boundary hitting a six over mid wicket, he topped scored with Lachlan Goss making 41.

Lachlan had another great day with the ball too; claiming 5 for 28 while Josh Osborne took the remainder of the wickets 5 for 5.

Nov 9: Once again the women’s side played at home taking on North Pines.

After an early run out by mother/ daughter combination of Rebecca and Leanne Pool, the away side settled and saw out the day losing 2 more wickets thanks to the Pool sisters finishing on 182.

Nov 13: The juniors also played North Pines and made 107 from 25 overs losing only 6 wickets.

North Pines replied with 119 from the same amount of overs.

Nov14: The second week started with North Pines 2 for 72 then the first bowl of the day was bowled then they were 3 for 72.

Report: Bec O’Brien These cute youngsters are all smiles as they prepare to hit the field to learn as much as they can about the sport of cricket.

They are part of the Two Wells Cricket Club’s new initiative, minis cricket, which targets children aged 4-7 years old.

Led by club icon, Pat Wake, the children are being shown how to

wanted an early day so he ripped through half a dozen wickets more for the day taking his tally for the match to 12 for 59.

Nov 16: Second week against North Pines saw the girls having to play one shirt down due to illness.

Heidi Bergen batted extremely well to finish 42 not out after opening the innings, a little too cautious at times but this was necessary due to being a batter down.

Leanne Pool who retired hurt had

to return to the cease to add to her total but before she got injured made 24 not out too.

Overall the girls showed plenty of spirit in the run chase to complete the over on 123 for the loss of 5 wickets.

On the November 12 the club hosted the Hickinbotham group as they opened their new sub division Eden.

It was great to see many local businesses coming to share the experience with other local identities.

Lower Light farmer, Tom Gordon, heads to Queensland to compete in the national sailing championships Sailing across the gleaming cool blue ocean around the world is a tough job, but somebody has to do it!

Lower Light farmer, Tom Gordon, is doing just that, heading to Queensland after Christmas to compete in the national sailing championships in his International Fireball boat known as “Cletus!”

Tom’s sailing partner is Jack Fletcher of Brighton, and together the pair have had great success in their sailing competitions.

However sailing is not as easy as some might think and certainly not for the fainthearted!!

“Things can go wrong - one slip up, you can lose your grip and the boat can capsize or something can break,” Tom said. And yes, Tom has had a few “gutsers” and has capsized his boat before!

“We can go quite fast with a 25 knot wind, downwind going about 20 knots or 40km is the max - that’s hanging on, scary stuff.”

Races last for about

The pair train at the Adelaide Sailing Club at West Beach every Saturday in the summer season, with state heats held on Sundays, alternating at Wallaroo, Port Vincent, and city beaches.

“We gear up for the start of the season about five weeks before theAFL grand final by having a few sails, with our official season opening this year on October 11,” Tom said.

While Tom plays football in the off-season

Tom’s partner, Taylor Neighbour, has also caught the sailing bug, competing in the International Fireball class. Both are qualified instructors too, which keeps them very busy during the summer months.
