TOBY’S FLYING HIGH

VPS Year 5 student, Toby Trenwith, took out first prize in the Year 3-5 Multimedia category of this year’s South Australian Oliphant Awards with his entry “How Planes Fly”.

Bec O’Brien reports: awards. Well, that’s exactly what Virginia Primary School Year 5 student, Toby Trenwith has done.

Toby’s entry into the esteemed science-based South Australian Oliphant Awards, “How Planes Fly”,

took out first prize in the Year 3-5 Multimedia category.

Toby was also named the winner of the South Australian Department for Childhood Development’s Young Scientist Award.

And to add another feather in this young scientists’ cap there was a “highly commended” award in the

University of Sydney’s 2015 Eureka Sleek Geeks Eureka Prize recently.

This prize is awarded to a short film that communicates a scientific concept in an accessible and engaging way.

Toby’s entry was the only South Australian entry recognised this year.

This Lower Light resident certainly has a love of science, fostered and supported no doubt by his award-winning science teacher and proud mum, Anita, who currently works at the University of South Australia. n Continued page 8

Recently Two Wells identity, John Newton, spoke Waterloo RAAF Base Corner Edinburgh Elizabeth to club members about the training of “Police Greys.”

John worked in SAPOL’s mounted division for Two Wells and Lewiston, Middle Beach, many years, and explained what is involved in the Lower Light, Port Gawler, Buckland Park, training and breeding of the grey horses. and Virginia.

He said training focuses on building trust between the rider and horse to cope with noise and often chaotic situations.

This year’s Two Wells Christmas Street Parade will be held on Friday December 11, so keep the date free, it’s sure to be lots of fun for the whole family. Arrangements for stalls and entertainment are progressing and once again the street will be closed to traffic from 4.30pm to 9pm.

The parade will march off at 7pm, with Father Christmas available for meet and greet sessions in the old council chambers building after the parade.

Forms for stallholders are now available at the Two Wells Craft Shop.

Closing date for applications and payment from stallholders is Friday November 13.

Each year a number of community contests are held in conjunction with the parade and details of these will be out in coming weeks.

If you would like to nominate someone for the honour of being the Parade

Prince or Princess please submit their name and contact details by email to pacapark2@bigpond.com or if hand written, place in an envelope and leave at the Two Wells Craft Shop.

Give us as much information about the young person as you can including their current school/work situation, and especially of their assistance in the community.

Closing date for submissions for this is October 31.

All entrants in the actual parade must fill out an entry form.

This form will be supplied automatically to all who participated last year – but any new groups or individuals wishing to enter need to pick up a form from the Two Wells Craft Shop.

Local truckies honoured Bec O’Brien reports: Like a swimmer follows the black line in a pool, so Two Wells icon, Dianne Meaney, for many, many years followed the white line of our country’s open roads.

At a special dinner held in Alice Springs on Saturday August 29, Di was inducted into the Australian Road Transport Hall of Fame.

Her husband Malcolm, who died 10 years ago from cancer, was also recognised with a posthumous induction.

Di was one of around 270 people inducted into the hall of fame, and was one of only two women inducted this year.

She began her truck driving career in the early 1970s, driving road trains all around Australia, with regular trips to Moomba in the state’s north delivering supplies, pipe casings and chemicals.

The business was a family affair, with the couples’ three children, Daniel, Marie and Chelsea also spending many hours on the road in their younger years.

The Meaney’s carted fuel and bitumen, often taking road trains to remote areas of the country, and for many years were also carting local farmer’s grain during harvest.

“We carted to the Aboriginal communities a lot and went out into the APY Lands many times,” Di explained.

“We also started doing a lot of bitumen carting, all over Australia.

“We went as far as Queensland, up to the Northern Territory and over to the West Coast.

“We also had our grain carting, we had that for ever and we did that in the grain season.

“We carted much of the local farmers’ grain.”

Di stopped driving trucks in 2012 and now at a young 73 years old, looks back on her years on the road with fondness.

“I’d still do it now but it was starting to get a little bit hard on my body,” she laughed.

“I loved driving and going distances, seeing the countryside and meeting people. “I’ve met some wonderful people over the years.

“I just enjoyed the travelling.

“Travelling 3000km doesn’t faze me at all.”

While Di knew of and was thrilled at Malcolm’s inclusion into the road transport hall of fame, her induction came as a big surprise.

Unbeknown to her, Di’s family had also nominated her for the special honor and she was shocked to discover only hours before the ceremony that she too was being recognised.

Di attributes much of her road driving skills and knowledge to Malcolm, saying he was always interested in machines and had studied to become a diesel mechanic.

“Malcolm was a very versatile person, he was one of the old school who if he broke down on the side of the road he would fix it up himself,” Di said.

“We didn’t have mobile phones like we do today so he had to get out of any scrapes himself.

“He was very clever like that, he could turn his hand to anything and he was a great mentor for me.

“I think I did the longest apprenticeship of truck driving there is because even in the last few years he would sometimes say I’m not doing it right,” she added with a laugh.

Other locals to also be inducted into the Australian Road Transport Hall of Fame include Billy Cutting, Peter Hart and Malcolm Coombe.

$985m for the Northern Connector You may have heard recently on the news that the Federal and State governments have agreed to fund the Northern Connector.

The Connector will bridge the Northern Expressway and the South Road Superway.

This near five-year project is expected to create 480 jobs each year and will bring $4.9 billion of economic benefits to the State over its lifetime.

“We want to work with Council, not against them,” stated John Lush to a crowd of 80 people, on Wednesday September 9, at the Two Wells Football Club.

The Mallala Ratepayers Association held another meeting at a larger venue to cater for the growing number of residents who are joining the group.

The tone of this meeting was pro-active, rather than reactive, as the notion of cooperation with the council develops.

“We’ve got 700 members and growing, as we speak.

“Join our association and we’ll respect your concerns, and represent you in a professional manner.

“We will collate information and present that information to Council for consideration.”

“We want to give ratepayers a voice on what they want to see happen in their area.”

their local area.

In particular, aspects of regions not being maintained properly, requiring much needed funds to stop them from being public liability issues.

“The $250,000 budgeted for temporarily shifting the council offices from Mallala to Two Wells is seen as a way of fast tracking the movement to a permanent basis, which means more costs”, said Craig Argent, Association committee member.

He then addressed the Mayor’s media response to claims that Council spending $12m on the proposed move are incorrect.

“It’s recorded in the Mallala and Districts Facilities and Infrastructure Advisory Committee, August 2013,” said Craig.

Councillor Joe Danielle then stated “that figure was scrapped a long time ago”, despite the absence of a new report retracting the figure.

Antique Roadshow comes to town Bec O’Brien reports: Have you ever wondering what the story is behind Grandma’s old side table, Pop’s toy car or Nanna’s silver spoons?

Maybe you have something of age or value and you’d like it appraised?

Well, the upcoming District Council of Mallala Antiques Roadshow event just might be the answer.

In a first for our district, the popular television show format is coming to Two Wells, with antique expert, Paul Bartlett, set to host an antiques and collectables show and tell on Tuesday October 27.

One local resident who is keen to learn more about a few family and long-held items is Bev Molloy.

“I think this event will be a surprise and everyone I’ve spoken to is really excited about it,” Bev said.

“It’s something different.”

“This little dog has sat on our mantle piece for as long as I can remember,”

“Mum said Dad bought it at Coles at the Port before they were engaged and paid 2 shilling 6 pence for it.

“All of these things have been in the house

for as long as I can remember.

“It will be interesting to see what, if anything they’re worth.”

Police dog exhibition in Two Wells Two Wells, Mallala and Thompson Beach NHW are joining together on October 13, 2015 at 7.30pm for a special presentation night open to anyone that wishes to attend.

The NHW groups will be lucky enough to have Police Dog Handler Senior Constable First Class Hearnden and Police dog Argus attend at the Two Wells Community RSL, Old Port Wakefield Road Two Wells.

The group looks forward to an informative presentation about the roles of the Police Dog Unit within SA Police and a little demonstration of Argus’ abilities/training.

This presentation is bound to be an exciting and informative exhibition, which hopefully all ages will enjoy.

Police dog Argus and his handler Senior Constable First Class Hearnden will attend the next Neighbourhood Watch meeting and demonstrate their skills.

STEVEN GRIFFITHS MP Member for Goyder

I was pleased to attend the 16 September meeting of the Two Wells Regional Action Team to encourage members to use me as a resource and make them aware of ways I can advocate for them. I was also interested in hearing about rehabilitation of foreshore areas and plans for a unique, up-market skate park.

I look forward to meeting with Two Wells residents again at my next Listening Post outside the Two Wells Post Office (date to be set); I also hope, too, that many from around the region can visit the Goyder Electorate stand next week at the Yorke Peninsula Field Days at Paskeville (Cyclone Pavilion, site 18).

Griffiths hears concerns The September meeting of the Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) welcomed Member for Goyder, Steven Griffiths, as a special visitor for the evening.

All members present introduced themselves at the start of the meeting and after the acceptance of apologies and minutes we deferred further business to allow Steven to address us and for discussions on issues we felt we would like him to know about.

the heavy load on our local police officers, who have such a big area to cover and not enough manpower to cope with the demands for their time and attendance.

Local foreshore issues were also high on the list for discussion and Steven was very keen to follow up and learn more about these significant areas.

All members felt the time spent in discussing such a variety of matters with our local Member was extremely constructive and we look forward to more contact in the future with Steven and thank him for taking the time to attend our meeting and for being so interested in our local area.

We look forward to our October meeting when we will be meeting with the CEO of the District Council of Mallala, Katrina Marton.

Youth bus visits Mallala with a message Recently I attended the 3rd in a series of Regional Youth Bus events, which was at Mallala.

Others have been held at Dublin and Two Wells.

The bus supports local young people through fun activities, education, referrals and links to support services.

It is packed with the latest technologies including gaming, music and Wi-Fi; all in a supervised safe environment whilst hanging out with friends.

Recent local issues have included meeting with the District Council of Mallala and the Mallala Ratepayers Association to discuss financial questions posed in relation to the plan to shift council’s administration centre to Two Wells; and, a little further afield, the issue of Port Wakefield holiday traffic congestion made media headlines again, this time with a proposal to look at the option of two roundabouts.

State issues have included the continuing “Save the Repat” campaign (on 10 September the Liberal Party lodged a petition in Parliament with 85,000 signatures against the closure of the Daw Park Repatriation hospital); and inefficiencies in the delivery of Premier Weatherill’s Cost of Living payment introduced in July to replace the withdrawn concessions on council rates for pensioners and low-income earners.

I am informed cheques began being posted the week commencing 21 September: $200 for pensioners/low income earners who own their homes; $100 for low income earners/Seniors Health Card holders who are tenants.

In relation to the “Save the Repat” campaign, I am pleased our well-known local tin man has had a fresh coat of paint and is again being used to flag unrest with State Government actions, this time against Minister Snelling’s “Transforming Health” plans. The other iron icon structures which have adorned Port Wakefield Road for 18 years are to also be given new life.

Other Parliamentary work that has been keeping me busy include the Local Government (Accountability and Governance) Amendment Bill, and the introduction of a (200 page) Planning, Development and Infrastructure Bill for which I have portfolio responsibility.

I am pleased Premier Weatherill is to hold a Country Cabinet from 18-20 October in the Barossa, Light, Mallala and Gawler district, which will include meeting opportunities for local stakeholder and community groups.

In Grants news, a fantastic new Impact100 SA initiative has been announced by Philanthropy Australia which brings together at least 100 members who each donated $1,000 annually.

These funds are pooled to make large impact grants to South Australian-based projects, under a 2015 theme, “Strengthening Families”. Example projects could focus on parenting, domestic violence and kinship care (more information at www.stevengriffiths.net ) Current State Government grant opportunities include the Active Club Program (closes 12 October), the Volunteer Support Fund (closes 23 October), the Smart State PC Donation Program (closes 30 October), Positive Ageing Grants (closes 30 October) and the ongoing Business Transformation Voucher Program and Export Partnership Program.

Baker Road Ford open

After months of closure the Baker Road ford crossing is now open again. A new 2.6-metre high bridge has been built and will hopefully see the ford only closed once every couple of years.

The project was funded by the State Government Black Spot program (around $280,000), District Council of Mallala ($132,000) and City of Playford ($69,500). An official opening ceremony will be held on Friday at 10am.

PRESSURE, pressure, pressure was what Virginia coach, Stephen Papanotis demanded and it was three defensive acts that paved the way for the Rams’ first A grade premiership in 17 years.

The first was Devon Oliver’s goalsaving tackle on Jamie Good, matched by Matthew Young pinging the arms of Jason Earl in the third quarter, and culminating in Anthony Seccafien’s chase on Troy Algar, saving a goal as Mallala threatened a final term comeback.

The match was played at pace in stunning spring conditions, a classy snap from Virginia’s Cameron Felstead opening the goal tally, followed by majors to Brendon Niklaus and Ben Russell.

Gun Mallala wingman, Brad Hardie, pulled up sore after his first disposal but continued on.

The Rams needed a steadier and Billy Nikou provided it, while keeping a close check on Hardie, and Niklaus banged through his third to give his side some breathing space.

Andrew Ross (Virginia) and Brad Griffiths (Mallala) both goaled for their respective sides before half time and the Rams had steadied after looking shaky.

Jordan Clements was influential in the Mallala midfield, while Russell and Felstead had been vital for the Rams.

Emmanuel Tsimiklis spent a large portion of the first half off the ground but returned to the field to play out the match.

It was really the third quarter where Brad Robertson took control of the game.

He was rocked by a late hit in a marking contest from Hardie, who came off worse for wear, Robertson nailing the goal from the resulting 25m penalty.

Daniel Kerr kicked a great goal from a stoppage for Virginia and when Joel Montgomerie went down with a quad injury, Mallala looked in trouble.

Feeley kept Mallala in touch but back to back majors from Niklaus built the Rams’ lead to 25 points.

A late running goal from Jamie Good gave Mallala some life before three quarter time.

Robertson and Russell were on top in the midfield, while the efforts of Rob Montgomery and Jake Birchmore in defence had stopped a number of Virginia forward forays.

Battle of the day was the ruck contest between Ben Galic and Will Farrelly, which was arguably even in the end, a key result for Virginia considering the service Farrelly had given his midfielders most of the year.

Nathan Warren streaked into space for the opening goal of the last quarter and when Felstead nailed a classy left foot snap, the Magpies were on the ropes.

Joel Montgomerie bravely returned to the field under clear duress and slotted a goal from a forward line spillage to keep his side in it.

Billy Nikou sealed the deal for Virginia when he ran into an open goal but Mallala weren’t done with yet.

Brent Harris and Ben Parish chipped in with goals, either side of a brilliant long range effort from Nigel Osborn, who significantly lifted in the second half.

The equation was too much for the Magpies though, despite showing great heart to fight it out when it all seemed lost.

Virginia had a number of key contributors on the day, Robertson (best on ground) Russell and Galic the standouts.

Defensively, Adrian Mark, Devon Oliver, Anthony Seccafien and Anthony Bascombe were stellar, but the unsung hero was Felstead, particularly in the first half.

Niklaus had a good game, kicking five goals but missing a few shots you would expect him to get and dropping some marks he would take 99 times out of 100.

Nikou arguably quelled Hardie, who worked hard despite picking up a number of knocks during the contest.

For Mallala, Algar loomed as the game breaker and was by far the most dangerous Magpie on the ground.

Rob Montgomery did a brilliant job on Steven Pollock, keeping him goalless and took a number of defensive marks, along with Birchmore when shifted up to half back.

Clements was Mallala’s most consistent midfielder, with Montgomerie and Osborn solid but beaten on the day.

Virginia too classy in Reserves final THE win for the Virginia Reserves over Mallala was part of a huge weekend for the club, with the senior side also claiming the flag to complete a special premiership double.

While many expected the match to be a onesided affair, the Magpies took it right up to the Rams in a thrilling encounter.

Virginia opened the better side and despite being reasonably dominant in the first quarter, they only took a 14-point lead into the first break.

Matt Stones was dangerous early with two goals but was later shifted to half back.

Mallala then countered brilliantly, slamming on five goals to one in the second term.

Lewis Bruggemann put the Magpies in front and Chris Bilney extended the lead moments later, the underdogs going into the break full of running.

Justin Platt got the Rams back on target with a brilliant checkside from deep in the pocket and Chris Strange put Virginia back in front soon after.

Matt Saunders slotted a vital major late in the term to put Mallala back in front at three quarter time but Virginia had significantly lifted.

Three Virginia goals, including two to Steven Lioulios, helped give the Rams some breathing space, but Brett Jenkin kicked a steadier for Mallala to close the margin back to eight points.

The Rams again responded, Lewis Bannear icing the cake for Virginia.

Veteran, Anthony Johnston, was named best on ground, his class around the ground a feature on the day.

Rams coach, Mark Matheson, said Mallala played extremely well and would have deserved the win if they had got up.

“They put a loose man back, which blocked up our space up forward,” he said.

“They adjusted to the game well and forced us to make some changes to address that.”

Matheson praised his team for responding to the challenge, with Steve Lioulios going forward due to soreness, which meant a reshuffle in defence, while co-captain, George Stiliasano, was pushed into the ruck.

“The changes brought some blokes into the game and we were able to win a lot more ball through the midfield,” Matheson said.

“Johno (Anthony Johnston) was impose himself on the game in the second half, his poise and confidence was vital for us.”

Johnston was one of several lads with senior footy experience, including the likes of Lewis Bannear, Con Mylonopoulos, Rocky Perre and Steven Peter, while new faces, Chris Strange, along with the Stones boys, Matt and James, have played A1 footy with Salisbury North.

Platt was kept to just the one goal but played an important hand in setting a number of other opportunities up.

“He doesn’t get enough credit for how well he plays,” Matheson said.

“He’s a class forward who attracts two or three opponents, and we probably didn’t get the ball in quickly enough to him on the weekend.

“He doesn’t need a lot of touches to have an impact and having his strength up there really straightens us up.”

Interactive fun for the senses for children at FLAG

Each month the Two Wells Book Club will bring you a review of the book that had been read by the group the previous month.

The Book Club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library.

We hope to provide you with an opportunity to engage with some books that you might never have thought to pick up and read.

Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Bec O’Brien reports: It was a taste of the senses at Families Learning and Growing (FLAG) this term.

The young members and their carers were treated to a range of fun, interactive and hands-on learning activities over a number of weeks following the theme of “Me” and “Senses”.

The sensory activities were a hit with the children, with all involved enjoying touch and feel bags, taste tests, singing, making musical instruments and creating life-sized cutout of themselves and “Me” booklets.

A trip to the local library was also a fun outing during the term.

Next term the group will follow a theme of Spring, with activities designed around animals, flowers, bugs and all things Spring.

FLAG is held every Friday morning at the Uniting Church Hall during the school term.

British author, Kazuo Ishiguro, is a celebrated contemporary fiction writer throughout the English speaking world.

His novel, Never Let Me Go, although set in England in the 1990s, can be described as an alternate genre of science-fiction, although this isn’t entirely obvious until the unconventional plot unfolds throughout the course of the story.

The narrator, Kathy, grows up in what is seemingly an orphanage, however, the relationships formed throughout childhood with the other ‘students’ and the guardians at the ‘school’ give the notion of a happy childhood.

Children are told that they are ‘special’ and must look after their bodies.

Eventually they come to fully understand the purpose of their lives.

They are ‘donors’, human clones whose body organs are used to keep the rest of

the ‘normal’ population living longer.

Very few book club members enjoyed this month’s novel.

The melancholy tone and a seeming lack of movement kept some members from finishing the book, whilst others continued to read, waiting for something interesting to happen.

Of the few members who did enjoy the book, it was the characters and their relationships with each other, navigating through love, sex, and differing personalities, that piqued their interest.

If you’re not keen on investing time reading this story, you could perhaps watch the 2010 movie, starring Keira Knightly, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield.

New babes in town N There has been a bit of a baby boom in our area in recent months, with quite a few families welcoming new additions.

Larni Paige Wearn arrived a couple of weeks early on June 22 at North Eastern Community Hospital, weighing 5lb 4oz (2.39kg).

She is a little sister for proud siblings Ashlyn and Chase and another sweet daughter for Neralie and Andrew (Photo courtesy Melissa Alagich).

N Aedin Blake Whitworth also arrived in June (23rd) and his pictured here with his mum Haidee Holland. Weighing 8lb 4oz Aedin was born at Kapunda Hospital and is a little brother for Ameleah and son for Ashley Whitworth.

Yummy fruit slice a winner This delicious slice recipe by Two Wells local, Pam Duncan, actually has two different variations, one healthy and one for when you’re looking for that little something sweet to eat.

Pam says the recipe hails from a friend of hers from Waikerie, who regularly makes it for the monthly Lower North Gun Club shooting events.

“She bring this slice every time and someone usually asks her for the recipe,” laughed Pam. “When I take it somewhere I usually have the same problem, everyone always wants the recipe.”

Pam usually makes both versions of this slice at the same time as they’re quick and easy to make and can be changed in various ways and suggests, where possible, using the freshest dried fruit available.

Dried Fruit & Chocolate Slice INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup dried diced fruit • 1 cup chopped nuts, 1 cup dark chocolate drops • 1 tin skinny condensed milk METHOD: • Mix all ingredients together and put in slice tin.

• Cook 1/2 hour in slow oven.

• When cool ice with lemon icing and drizzle with melted chocolate.

Dried Fruit Slice INGREDIENTS: • 375 grams mixed dried fruit • 1 cup S.R. Flour • 1 tin condensed milk METHOD: • Mix fruit and flour then add condensed milk.

• Put in slice tin and bake 30 mins in moderate oven.

• Ice with lemon icing when cool.

Tin Man returns The Tin Man is back to his standing position in Lower Light along Port Wakefield road after a short hiatus from his protesting posse.

The original Tin Man statue was made from scrap metal and was blown down after gale force winds hit the area a few months ago.

Kevin Lawrence and his son Brenton, whose property the Tin Man resides on, performed the much-needed repairs with the financial help from Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello.

Now up and rebadged, sporting a sign to fight the closure of the Repat Hospital, he is not looking too scrappy at all.

Junior players awarded Bec O’Brien reports: The end of the 2015 football and netball season was celebrated by junior members of the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club and their families on Sunday September 20 amid beautiful Spring weather.

Following a shared BBQ lunch at the club grounds, trophies were presented to the best and fairest from each junior team.

Participation trophies were also presented to members of the Under 10 netball team, as well as the Under 8 and Under 11 football teams.

Trophy winners were as follows: Under 13A netball – Ruth Slattery (B/F), Jaudyn Hansen (R/U) and Ashlee Filko awarded the coaches’ trophy.

Two Wells footballers scooped the pool in all four grades at the APFL Plains Producer Medal count on September 12.

While Ned Seccafien won the A grade and Matthew Sincock won the B grade, it was an even more momentous occasion for brothers, Noah and Luke Barnett, who won the senior and junior colts’ medals respectively.

Noah, 16, and Luke 14, both play in the midfield for their teams, and from their medal wins, obviously get plenty of the ball.

Noah also had a taste of A grade football this year.

Both lads have played for Two Wells for the past five years, and in Victoria prior to that.

“I started my junior football at Mypolonga before we moved to Victoria,” Noah said.

Luke played in a week-long State under 15 carnival in Adelaide in July, which he really enjoyed.

“I also trained with the Eagles under 15 country team’s “Bub Smith Country Development Squad,” Luke said.

While Luke was hoping to have a second medal hanging around his neck on grand final day - a premiership medal - it wasn’t to be.

However the boys hope to continue to play football and only time will tell how far they will go in the “big league.”

The big question is - where do the boys get their sporting talent - mum or dad?

Obviously from their father, Dave - so he says!

To prove this, Dave is heading off to play cricket in the upcoming Masters Games in October. We look forward to seeing photos!

Clarky triumphs in Handicap match play Report: Adam Bail Two wells Golf Club secretary September was highlighted by the conclusion of a number of the club’s honour board events; namely the Handicap match play final, Captain’s Trophy, Stroke Eclectic and Medal of Medals.

The final of the Handicap match play was this year fought out between a couple of the clubs old timers, Yogi Frencken and Ian Clark.

Ian and Yogi had a great tussle, being all square after nine holes with Clarky then taking control on the back nine to win 3/2.

He added further insult by nearly taking Yogi out with a rake early on in the round, and then winning a meat tray to make his day.

Congratulations to Ian on a very popular and well deserved win.

John Ball, Rob Thompson, John Mills and Ian Smith were the contenders for the Medal of Medals competition.

John Ball came out on top with a fabulous round of 82/67 to take the prize.

This round was also enough to push John into a tie for the Stroke Eclectic title which he shared with the ever consistent Stuart Grigg.

This month has seen the course begin to firm up with the onset of some great warm weather.

However, the course is still looking great and so is the golf.

Michael Davies has hit a rare vein of form over the last few weeks cracking into the A Grade top three just about every Saturday.

This form saw Michael clinch a massive win in the Captain’s Trophy.

John Ball has also fired up the golf sticks.

Two Wells Netball Club finally has all of its courts under lights.

The light may not have come at the right time of the season, but after many years of training on only two courts, there won’t be too much complaint now four new lights have gone up and all courts can be utilised.

The tennis club will no doubt appreciate the new lights this season!

Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club vice president, Tony Lange, was given the task of leading the lights project, which was identified as a priority by the club’s future capital works sub-committee following the completion of the extensive clubroom renovations.

Tony says while the lights didn’t go up as quickly as hoped due to the wintry weather, the project was completed with a lot of volunteer support.

Tony says there are a long list of people the club thanks in getting this project completed, in particular, Peter and Jenny Cocks, Andy Stewart, Lions members Rodney Wilmshurst, Malcolm Frost, Eddie Stubing and Rodney Mildred, Joe Cannizzaro, Coates Hire, Mantini Quarries, and electrician Theo Marko as well as Joe from Lights Every Direction.

Looking ahead for the club, the capital works sub-committee has a few projects lined up, which include restructuring the rear retaining wall, establishing a sponsored paved area, more oval seating, and extra shelter and possibly portable stands at the netball courts.

“The club is also actively seeking funding for the improvement of the oval lights,” Tony added.

“So in future we could possibly host night games.”

Athletics champs bring home gold, bronze Seven students from Two Wells Primary School competed in the SAPSASA Athletics State Carnival at Santos Stadium on Monday September 21.

Representing the Gawler and Districts region the students competed in a variety of athletics events including sprints, discus, high jump, long jump and relays.

Taking part in the day was Samuel Harnas (11yr old boys 100m sprint and 4x100m relay); Troy Brandt (13 yr old boys High Jump); Sam Sharp (11 yr old boys

Discus); Brayden Calvett (12 yr old boys 100m sprint); Cody Murch (12 yr old boys Long Jump); and Jaudyn Hansen (13 yr old girls 4x100m relay, 100m sprint and Long Jump).

All students participated competitively and with great sportspersonship, with two bringing home medals.

Congratulations to all students and in particular Samuel Harnas who won gold in the 4x100m relay and 100m sprint, and Jaudyn Hansen, who won bronze in the 4x100m girls relay.

Word has got around about the great quiz challenges prepared by the Quiz Master, Phillip Devlin.

Just as infamous are the delicious meals served by the ladies.

Tennis fans are urged to get down to the Two Wells District Tennis Club and take a racquet on Thursday October 1 and Wednesday October 7 as part of the national Free Tennis Days campaign.

On Thursday October 1 the club has the 2015 South Australian Foundation Cup coach, Haydn Leo, giving free ANZ Hot Shots tennis lessons, while qualified personal trainer, Rebecca Leo, will keep kids thoroughly entertained with tennis movement skills.

Then on Wednesday October 7 the club’s new club coach, John Hosking, who is a qualified Tennis Australia Junior Development coach with experience coaching ANZ Hot Shots in South Australia and Queensland, will be giving free ANZ Hot Shots coaching.

Lower North Gun Club held its birthday shoot on Sunday September 20 with 53 competitors attending from 14 clubs across SA and Australia, including Barmera, Monarto, Alice Springs, Bordertown, Elsewhere Gun Club (Jamestown), Wilkawatt, Lake Albert, Southern, Pt. Pirie and Northern and Districts in WA. Competitors shot a program of three events with a total of 100 targets for the day.

The canteen ladies worked hard all day and enjoyed a well-deserved wine afterwards.

The program opened with a 25 target Anniversary Point Score Cash Divide event. Adrian Mattschoss and Bob Cook jointly won AA Grade.

Winner of A Grade was Hayden Bowman with second being split between Luigi Ciaramellano, Trevor Bowman and Max Pontifex.

B Grade was won by Tania Evans with Barry Duncan coming second and C Grade was taken by Dean Grimmond with Rocko Spinella as second.

The second event was the drawcard event for the day - the 25 target $500 Seed Distributors Handicap event sponsored by Rob Damin of Seed Distributors, Virginia.

event then first place after a shoot off was secured

by Dean Grimmond with a 37/37, second place was Nev Wehrmann on 36/37 and third place was Adrian Mattschoss on 27/28.

Deb McPherson took fourth place after a shoot off between a heap of competitors who shot 24/25 in the event and she won with a 36/37.

The third event was the 50 target Anniversary Medley sponsored by Barry and Pam Duncan.

Overall winner and first in AA Grade was Aaron Zupanic with a perfect score of 100/100.

So close in second place was Dino Oliviero with 99/100 and third was won by Ziggy Drewing after a shoot off with 125/127.

In A grade the winner was Tony Carlesso with 119/121 after a shoot off with Max Pontifex close behind in second place with 118/121 and Harvey Nunn in third place with 97/100.

B grade was won by Barry Duncan on 97/100 with Tania Evans coming in second with 94/100 and Bernie Greenshields third with 92/100.

C Grade was won by David Bowman on 94/100 with Alex Glaser close behind on 93/100 and Rocko Spinella third on 86/100.

High Gun winners for the day were Jack Tapscott taking Junior High Gun with 187/200.

Veterans High Gun winner was Bob Cook on 194/200. Ladies High Gun was won by Tania

Evans on 192/200.

Overall High Gun was won by Aaron Zupanic who finished with a terrific score of 208/210.

The Lower North Birthday Shoot saw the end of the MLM Challenge – a points awarded challenge between Mallala Gun Club, Lower North Gun Club and Mid North Gun Club over their three birthday shoots.

This year it was again convincingly won by Lower North Gun Club, who received a beautifully carved shield. The individual high gun winner for the challenge went to Lower North shooter, Adrian Mattschoss on 423 points, just beating Aaron Zupanic from Mallala on 422 points.

Thanks to the valuable sponsors of our events, and the beautifully hand crafted High Gun trophy made by club member John Byrnes.

Also to the visiting shooters who travelled some distances to shoot at our club and have a few laughs. Thumbs up to the hard working club members who kept the events moving so everyone could get home early.

8523 n By president Jim Innes Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club is to hold two national events in October for both Pistol Australia (PA) and Sporting Shooters of Australia (SSAA).

Competitors from all around Australia are involved, as well as New Zealand.

Originating in the USA in1979, the Action Pistol Match is one of controlled speed and accuracy.

Using one of three divisions of firearms, the match is typically formed by four individual stages each consisting of 48 rounds of ammunition and scoring zones of "x" ring, a 10 ring, an eight ring and the remainder of the target five points.

If scores are tied at the completion of the four stages a count back procedure of the number of "x" ring hits to determine an eventual winner.

All courses of fire are electronically controlled and involve shooting from the standing and prone position at distances of 10 to 50 yards, as it is still in imperial dimensions.

Competitions are con-

ducted at club, state, national and international level with the ‘Bianchi Cup’ conducted in Columbia Missouri, USA, each year in May. Every two years a World Championship is conducted, and next year 2016, it is scheduled for New Zealand.

Ultimately a score of 1920 points is the objective with a high number of "x" ring hits.

The National Championships are to be held this year at the Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club, Mallala Road, Korunye, between October 15 and 24.

There was glamour, there was colour, there was conversation and laughter…and good food and drink! Redlow once again delivered style, fun and celebration as the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club concluded the 2015 season with its annual senior presentation event on Friday September 25.

Despite only one team, the netball A5s, bringing home the silverware at this year’s grand final, the atmosphere at Redlow was positive, with many players passionately speaking on the podium about a new drive to come back fitter and stronger next year.

With the ladies dressed in a rainbow of bright, spring-like colours, as well as the traditional black of course, and the men in dapper suits and ties, the night certainly had a festive feel to it.

Awards were presented to the best and fairest players of each team throughout the club, with long-time club man, Ben Harris, awarded with life membership during the presentation.

Taking the honours in the A grade football,by a wide margin of 36 votes, was local favourite, Ned Seccafien (74 votes), with Andrew Hardiman runner-up on 38 votes.

Ned was also presented with the Neville Seccafien Most Valuable Player award, an honour bestowed upon him by his teammates.

Young Brandon Daly was deemed best team man.

Three senior footballers were

also presented will special medals for reaching major milestones including Ben Spiteri, who played his 100th game this season, and Stephen Lange and Lee Allmond who both reached the 200-game mark.

In the B grade, Ross Coleman (34 votes) took home the Graham Applebee Medal for best and fairest, with Stephen Lange (R/U on 24 votes), Josh Lanzon (Best Team Man) and David Hogan (Coaches’ award) also taking home trophies.

In the A1 netball, goalie Nicole Darling took out the best and fairest award with the runner-up trophy going to newcomer, Hailey Maiden.

Cristie Castle was awarded the coaches’ trophy.

In the A2s, Maddy Seccafien won best and fairest,goalie Stephanie Walker was runner-up and Cassie Kent given the coaches’ award.

Crownedthis year’s A3 best and fairest was Karen Gramazio, with pocket rocket, Kate Lange and Brooke Schuitt joint runners-up.

Rachel Lange was given the coaches’ pick for the season.

In the A4 team, Amy Moss won best and fairest,Vicki Kulwikowski was runner-up, and in her comeback year, Chantel Harris the coaches’ trophy.

Madison also was runner-up best and fairest for the A4s in the association votes.

In the victorious premiership A5 side, first time senior player, Tayla Southwell, took out the top honours, with Alison Eland runner-up and Jessica Stringer the coaches’ pick.
