Residents concerned over plans to pump recycled water underground

IT was standing room only in the District Council of Mallala public gallery on Monday night, with about 40 worried residents packed inside, concerned about SA Water potentially pumping treated water into the T2 aquifer.

This involves pumping treated

water from Bolivar into the underground aquifer, where it can be stored and used as part of the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme (NAIS).

The MAR trial is planned to both make up part of the overall development of NAIS and provide evidence of the performance and

safety of MAR storage in that part of the aquifer. It is hoped it will be able to store water in winter of 2015 and then supply water by 2016.

The aquifer services a number of bores for residents in the Port Gawler, Two Wells and Virginia area, many of them without access

to mains water. The bores provide water for cooking, cleaning and in some cases, drinking, which residents felt could be contaminated if treated water is pumped into the aquifer. n Continued Page 6

Locals who often drive up and down Port Wakefield Road noticed the Tin Man had been blown down after gale force winds hit the area a couple of weeks ago.

Concern set in when a little while later the Tin Man was missing, many fearing that he may have been taken.

He was taken, though not against his will.

Andrew ‘Cossi’ Costello from South Aussie with Cossie, reported via his facebook page that the Tin Man had been taken away for repairs.

Dublin ward councillor, Terry Keen, has since reported “Cossie” has committed to fund the bill for his repairs, with original sculptor Kevin Lawrence, and other skilled locals also offering their expertise.

Hopefully the iconic landmark will be restored back to his usual home as soon as possible.

Bus tour unearths hidden treasures Natalie Centenera report & photos: Last month the District Council of Mallala, in conjunction with South Australia’s About Time History Festival, held a bus tour of local history sites.

Thirty people enjoyed a full day of visiting significant venues, some still in use and others abandoned long ago.

Lynette Seccafien of DCM hosted the trip, which included a short trip to the old Brooksfield Drag Strip, which was on Middle Beach Road.

Brooksfield Drags ran from 1965 to 1969 and was South Australia’s first two lane drag strip.

Morning tea was then held at Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club in Korunye, where all ear plugs were put in, and all hearing aids came out as a quick demonstration by an experienced shooter was given.

Korunye recreation ground, and football and cricket oval were given a quick visit as resident Lois Wasley shed some light on the history of the site.

Lunch was held at Long Plains Football Oval before moving off to Mallala Motorsport Park, known as the home of motorsport in South Australia.

The tour then finished at Mallala Equestrian Centre, whose large facilities are used by many equestrian groups who host their annual championships there.

An enlightening day was had by all those who attended.

Marie Tapscott, who home schools her children, used the day as an educational opportunity, treating the day as a history excursion for daughter Airlie and son Jack.

DCM Mayor, Duncan Kennington, enjoyed the company of the residents and visiting the sites, stating it was “council supporting the community celebrating History Month, going to various places in the community that has a history”.

backdrop of real places for her inspiration and character traits of people she knows for some of her characters, her books are fiction.

Her first foray into the publishing world came with a rejection, but after attending a workshop with Fiona McIntosh three years later, she was inspired by her enthusiasm and generosity and was later able to pitch her manuscript to an editor from Penguin.

“I was in the right place at the right time, I think.”

“There was a gap in their line for something with a medical flavor”, she confesses.

Well done local lads

SIR – On behalf of the Two Wells RSL, I would just like to acknowledge the young local boys who assisted in the placement of the crosses at the memorial for this years Dawn Service.

I did not get their names, but they know who they are, and I do personally thank them for their assistance.

Sometimes young Members of communities anywhere aren’t given enough thanks for their help.

For their help, we at the RSL gave each one a soft drink. I said that they are very welcome to visit us at the RSL anytime.

SA Water: ‘We got it wrong’ • From Page 1

Ateam from SAWater, including stakeholder management representatives, Steve Dangerfield and Mark Wilson, along with business team members, Jane Wilson and Terry Harris, briefed council on the matter for about 15 minutes.

Mr Dangerfield opened with a heartfelt apology for not carrying out enough community consultation, based on the public backlash received from residents in the past week.

“Clearly we got this a bit wrong,” he sad.

“For that we apologise.

“It is not our intention to continue the project if there is significant community objection.”

Mr Dangerfield revealed SA Water had started the consultation process with local councils, Virginia Irrigators Association, immediate surrounding landowners and industry groups, but not the broader community.

He said SA Water saw the aquifer storage project as the first stage of the NAIS, and part of securing a 200 million investment, which includes federal funding. The test site was on the corner of Port Wakefield Road and Port Gawler Road.

Mollie Frost’s Date Fingers Two Wells local, Mollie Frost, is well known for her crocheting skills. She’s also pretty handy in the kitchen, often whipping up a batch of cookies or a cake for one of the numerous groups she’s a member of. Here she shares with us her popular morning tea failsafe, Date Fingers, fondly known by her family as “Possum Poo” after her cheeky grandson thought the yummy treats looked suspiciously like possum droppings. Either way, they are quick and easy to make and taste delicious!

Date Fingers 2/3 cup sugar 1 egg ½ teaspoon vanilla 250g (8oz) dates 155g (5 oz) butter 3 cups rice bubbles ½ cup coconut Place sugar, egg and vanilla in saucepan and beat until combined. Add chopped dates and butter. Stirring over medium heat, bring mixture to the boil. Boil for 3 minutes, or until dates are soft, stirring all the time. Cool mixture and then combine with rice bubbles.

Shape mixture into fingers and roll in coconut.

Refrigerate until firm.

Market gardeners who use the water in the aquifer for domestic use, Joe Azzuro, Domenic Catanzariti, Rocky Azzuro, Rocky Sergi, Domenic Trimboli. Mr Trimboli said he was not against trying to find a storage solution for the recycled water, but “we think it’s the wrong place”.

There is still no injection of recycled water at this point, but SA Water has sunk test bores and taken results in a bid to understand if the location is suitable for a MAR, similar to what is in operation at Aldinga.

Councillor Terry Keen was unable to get an answer on whether any of the users of the water actually used the water for domestic purposes.

Mr Dangerfield said SA Water was still awaiting results, which will arrive in coming weeks, and there was still uncertainty on the viability of the scheme.

He confirmed if the scheme did go ahead, it would not proceed without proper engagement with the community.

He also flagged future community forums to discuss aquifer management, economic benefits to SA, water quality, site location and discharge management at Bolivar.

Councillor Eddie Stubing, queried potential long term impacts on the aquifer if a mistake is made, the response from Mr Wilson suggesting there was little risk associated the process.

SA Water representatives then took the names and contact details of residents in attendance.

The following is information provided on May 6 by SA Water regarding the T2 aquifer investigations: What the drilling works are for?

SA Water is currently investigating allowing up to 1 gigalitre of additional recycled water per year to be made available through the existing Virginia Pipeline Scheme.

The additional recycled water would be available for irrigators in the Northern Adelaide Plains to use during summer, with the MAR providing storage for recycled water produced during winter by the Bolivar Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The drilling works are establishing two test bores that will enable further investigations to be carried out for a potential Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) scheme.

Are there plans to pump recycled/reclaimed water into a nearby underground aquifer?

The newly drilled bores will be used to determine the potential of using the T2 aquifer as storage for recycled water produced during winter to be stored and used at higher demand periods through summer.

Further investigations and community engagement will be completed to ensure no negative impacts on the aquifer and local bore water users prior to any pumping going ahead.

The Environment Protection Authority and the Department for Environment, Water and Natural Resources

will also need to approve and licence any MAR scheme before proceeding.

Why are we doing this?

The Virginia Pipeline Scheme is currently at capacity during the summer period and this project is part of a broader strategy to service this demand and enable greater volumes of recycled water to be made available to a larger number of irrigators in the area, rather than directing the unused recycled water to the ocean.

Will this create risks of the water then entering nearby farmers’ bores?

The information obtained through the test bores will allow us to model the movement of water in the aquifer and enable us to understand any potential effects on neighbouring bores.

What assurances can we give farmers that this won’t impact them?

Letters explaining SA Water’s works have been sent to residents in a broad area around the site of the test bores.

SA Water encourages the community and existing users of the T2 aquifer to contact us if they would like additional information.

Further investigations and community engagement will be completed to ensure no negative impacts on the aquifer and local bore water users prior to any pumping going ahead.

Beautiful choir voices carried out of the small Anglican Church in Two Wells on Sunday May 17, as the congregation of St Paul’s commemorated the first Dawn Service of Anzac Day and its founder, Father Arthur Ernest White.

As part of celebrating South Australia’s “About Time” History Festival for 2015, parishioners took themselves back 100 years, by wearing clothing and observing an Anglican mass in the same fashion as a century ago.

It was a step back in time

Natalie Centenera Reports: upon entering the little stone building, pews filled with ladies wearing hats and men in threepiece suits.

The Adelaide Plains Male Voice Choir provided the lovely music, learning the John Merbecke Mass Setting and other music, which helped make the service a soulful experience.

The usually small group of attendees welcomed special guests from the Uniting Church, Mallala RSL, Dublin History

Group and Archdeacon of the Para, Lyn McRostie. All wore red crocheted poppies and some wore the medals of family members who had served.

A rosemary wreath was placed at the altar after the reading of names of The Fallen from the local surrounding areas.

The Last Post was played, followed by a minute’s silence and then the National Anthem sung by the choir, however, it was not Advance Australia Fair but God Save the Queen for this special service.

After the service morning tea

was enjoyed by all in the Hart Memorial Hall, particularly by those who put much time and effort into organizing the occasion, with special mentions to Gerry and Jenny Dowling, Sue Wilson, and Di Meaney.

Our own Lone Pine

Did you know a small slice of Gallipoli can be found right here in Two Wells?

Descended from what became known as Lone Pine, is our very own Lone Pine tree and it can be found out at the lovely Two Wells Golf Course.

Two Wells icon, Audrey Hart, acquired a seedling in the year 2000, which had been grown from the seeds of a tree which itself had come from the lone pine left standing during the battle at Gallipoli in 1915.

The seedling was planted at the Two Wells War memorial but due to concerns about its eventual size, was dug up and transplanted out at the golf course.

Unfortunately the sapling’s life was short lived and it died.

Fortunately, Audrey had the courage to seek out another Lone Pine seedling and that tree is now a stunning “pinus halepensis” as the Latins say, of about nine years of age.

The tree has lovingly been cared for by course curator, Denis Hart, and is a lasting tribute to those who served our country.

Chrissie a finalist in national competition Two Wells Community Children’s Centre early childhood worker, Chrissie Scott, is one of two South Australian finalists named in this years Australian Family Early Education and Care Awards.

Now in its 11th year of celebrating and acknowledging the commitment, hard work and passion by leaders and services in the community, the awards recognise outstanding service in the categories of Director of the Year, Service of the Year, Educator of the Year and the Rising Star Award.

Chrissie is a state finalist in the Educator of the Year category and could share in over $75,000 worth of prizes and training.

TWCCC director, Sarah Wormald, said the recognition for Chrissie was a long time coming and well deserved.

Bec O’Brien reports: “She’s just absolutely blown our minds with her drive and passion to always improve,” Sarah commented.

“She’s never shied away from a challenge or an opportunity and is someone who is as keen as mustard to further growth and development for herself and the centre.

“It’s just so well-deserved and she works extremely hard to always go above and beyond what her role is.”

by June 8 if she has been selected as a state winner, with all state winners then invited to attend the awards’ conference and celebration in Sydney, from June 18-20.

Let’s talk facts about the Abbott Governments recent Budget • Nine out of ten of the lowest income families lose.

• Nine out of ten of the wealthiest families benefit.

• A single income family on $65,000 with two children will be $6,164 a year worse off.

• A dual income family on $60,000 with two children will be $3,843 a year worse off.

There are also new cuts • $125.6 million cut to children’s dental.

• $69.6 million cut to Veterans’ health.

And the old cuts from their first Budget remain.

Local study recognised The Virginia and Northern Adelaide Plains Horticulture Study, previously commissioned by Mallala and Playford Councils, NRM, PIRSA and Regional Development Australia, is in the spotlight once again.

Having won first prize at the South Australian Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) Awards late last year, the study was judged at the recent National PIA Awards in Melbourne and received a commendation.

In judging the study the judges commented on “its inclusive and engaging nature, balanced with a grand vision, tangible actions and meaningful consultation”.

The judges also noted the study recognised the importance of agricultural land use under pressure from urban expansion and commended the project partners for facilitating input from the horticulture industry rather than just relying on investigations and data interpretation by planners and policy makers.

District Council of Mallala chief executive officer, Katrina Marton, welcomed the commendation.

“Receiving a national commendation on top of the recent first prize awarded at the State PIA awards last year, brings further recognition of the success of the study and the collaborative effort that underpinned its development,” Ms Marton said.

Another moment in the long history of Two Wells Primary School was played out last month when former students, staff and community members gathered to share stories and memories of their time at the school.

Aregistered SAHistory Month event, the “I Remember When….” reunion on Sunday May 17 saw around 150 people gather in the old school hall to view class photos, catch up with friends and reminisce before branching off in smaller groups to discuss school life before 1975, from 1975-1985 and after 1985.

This year the school is celebrating 150 years and the event is just one organised to commemorate the occasion, with organisers keen to take the opportunity to gather and record stories for future reference in years to come.

TWPS principal, Lynda FitzpatrickBrown, opened the event, saying the school had seen much change over its lifetime.

“We’ve seen some very big shifts in culture over the years which has made this community what it is today,” Lynda said.

“This is what we are celebrating.

“I’ve seen some ex-principals, exstudents, it’s fantastic and a terrific opportunity to catch up with so many people.”

TWPS governing council chairperson, Chrissie Scott, also spoke to the crowd, welcoming those in attendance and touching on the importance of the community sharing its stories for future reference.

“This is a fabulous chance for us to share in all of the stories that make up

our school community and I thank you for taking the time and making the effort to come,” Chrissie said.

The walls of the old school hall were adorned with many lovely black and white school class photos from years gone by, with former staff and students eagerly perusing the pictures and letting out a chuckle here and there as they looked back at themselves, family members and friends, from their time at the school.

Former principal, Alan Young, who was at the school from 1977 to 1982 spoke of the school’s mantra of “making tomorrow a part of today”, saying however it was just as important to remember the “yesterdays” that make up the school’s story and the importance of each student attending.

“Today is a living history exercise of people coming together to reflect on their history,” he said.

“It is also a great opportunity to reconnect after long periods of time (and) to value the contributions and experiences of everyone at the school and the broader community.

“To use an old African proverb ‘it takes the whole village to educate a child’ and that is a never-ending process.”

Upcoming events in the school’s 150th year include Grandparents Day on July 3, and a family fun day planned for October.

Putting the fun in fundraising at Virgara Wines Virgara Wines at Angle Vale hosted a family fun day on Sunday May 24 to raise much-needed funds for Cystic Fibrosis South Australia.

The fundraising event was raised in honour of Savannah and Ruby Smart who both have the genetic disease.

Their mother Rachel Smart, along with aunt, Mandy Whyte, and family friend Chloe Virgara organised the successful event in the hope of raising funds to find a cure.

Cystic Fibrosis affects one in every 2500 babies born in Australia, which equates to one baby every four days being born with it.

REhEaRsals for Two Wells Melodrama Group’s “The Bold and the Beastly” are drawing to a close, with the usual lastminute rush to finish costumes learning lines before opening , props and night on Friday, May 14.

ABOUT 35 residents turned out to discuss road closures at a special meeting with the District Council of Mallala, held in Two Wells last week.

Much of the discussion surrounded three roads in the district, Frost road and St Andrews road near Lewiston and Kenner road, Korunye.

“Everyone had the opportunity to put forward their views,” DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto said.

“Basically, what’s going to happen from there is we’ve

asked the community to put their views in writing and they will be forwarding that to us.”

“A report will be going out to council in July considering those submissions before making a final decision.”

Not much has changed in residents’ views on Frost road’s suggested reopening.

“The general feedback was that most of the community wanted it to remain closed,” Mr Mansueto said.

The same went for St Andrews road, an extension of

Frost road.

“There was fairly reasonable support to maintain the closure although if council was to open it, the community wanted council to upgrade the road,” Mr Mansueto said.

The main reasons for maintaining the closure primarily revolved around safety concerns with increased traffic in the area.

Some Korunye locals also opposed Kenner road’s potential closure.

“I believe there were some landowners there who weren’t in

support of that so that feedback will go back to council,” Mr Mansueto said.

MEANTIME, a recent article suggesting Wasleys Road Bridge may be closed if damage is not repaired was slightly incorrect.

Mr Mansueto clarified the bridge’s use may be impacted with weight restrictions and other such measures, although no options have been considered as yet.

He added no closure was likely in the foreseeable future.

Take a bow Two Wells Melodrama!

The Two Wells Melodrama Group wrapped up its 2015 performance “Great Questpectations” on Saturday May 30 to a packed audience.

The popular show, written this year

by Stacey Murray and Sarah Groom, who have paired up for the first time, followed the comical adventures of two new knight “graduates” as they sought to find a worthy quest and prove themselves as fully qualified knights.

Director, Eleisha Arbon, who also performed in the show, said this year’s melodrama was a resounding success, with the group raising thousands of dollars, most of which will be returned to community groups throughout the district.

Bec O’Brien reports: “I’m very proud of what the cast and crew have accomplished this year,” Eleisha remarked.

“They have done a brilliant job of bringing the show to the stage and making it such a successful event.”

While all involved take a well-earned breather, Stacey and Sarah, have put their hands up to write next year’s script.

Creating your own piece of paradise I have been building a swale on my property to take the overflow from my tanks.

I have planted many native plants around it and the birds that visit are amazing.

Watching their antics as they go through their daily routines is one we seldom take time to notice and by creating these environments I am able to do this.

If you are wanting to create your own piece of paradise, then this project might be just what you are looking for.

The Understory project is a great example of community groups working together.

Heritage Association (GEHA) and Gawler Regional Natural Resource Centre (NRC) have been collecting seeds and propagating native plants for the past 12 months, so landholders can have the opportunity to purchase a selection of native understory plants at minimal cost.

These plants are adapted to the regions climate, rainfall and

soil type resulting in increased chance of survival, and are most of all drought tolerant, which means less water than many exotic species.

This project offers a great opportunity for residents within our region to put back the types of plants that where originally here prior to European settlement.

Our region has only three

percent remnant (original) vegetation left in the Mallala district and much of this is on roadsides.

Our backyards are like stepping stones (fragmented landscapes) throughout our region.

These stepping stones, when connected, form wildlife corridors that enable native fauna to travel throughout our districts.

Providing the necessary re-

sources will enable native animals to expand their territories beyond your backyard.

I believe this project will help you achieve these goals.

Proposed International Bird Sanctuary is taking shape

On Friday April 24 I attended an interesting information session the Thompson Beach Progress Association hosted in their shed in connection with the proposed International Bird Sanctuary that is proposed to commence south from the Barker Inlet to Parham; 60 kilometers of coastline.

Dianne put together a table spread that resembled a roman feast that the Minister Ian Hunter and guests made the most of.

Planet Ark national tree day Planet Ark is celebrating 20 years of planting trees this year and is urging Australians to take part in the celebration by volunteering to be site coordinators for National Tree Day on Sunday July 26 and Schools Tree Day on Friday July 24.

The environmental organisation is looking for site coordinators from councils, schools, national parks, Guides, Scouts, nature care organisations and faith and sporting groups who would like help to plant trees and shrubs and care for their local area.

This year the National Tree Day theme of “You Can Grow So Much” focuses on the wealth

echo 17 The last month of golf has culminated in the players travelling up to Hamley Bridge for the bi-annual Hamley Bridge / Two Wells Challenge.

The Hamley course was in superb condition as usual and the weather turned on a perfect day for this year’s first leg of the interclub challenge, full credit to the Hamley boys for the work done during the week to prepare the course.

Hamley Bridge as always put on a great spread with steak sandwiches, snags and salad, which was appreciated by both groups.

On the previous Thursday Jake Bowden was sent up for a sneaky look at the local talent and condition of the course and his report was welcomed by the Two Wells team who adapted to the course and the unusually warm weather extremely well to post some very good scores.

Stuart Grigg played consistent golf with a solid 42 points to edge out Jake Bowden on a countback, also on 42 points, for the A Grade win.

Bobby Hogg was third with a very respectable 40 points.

James Weir also steady with a fine score of 40 points took out B Grade from Neil Bowden who bounced back from last week’s NAGA with a fine display to finish with 37 points.

TW GOLF NEWS Ian Smith snuck in third with 35 Points.

The Challenge on the day finished with Two Wells scoring an average of 34.8% to comfortably hold onto the trophy for a record 6th straight time.

Congratulations to all the golfers from both clubs who played on the day to make it a continued success and we look forward to the return match in August at Two Wells.

It has been great to see that most of the weekly spoils have been shared around this month but Stuart Grigg and Jake Bowden have continued some good play and John Ball has started to find some much needed form ahead of the Championships.

The ladies have been sharing the wins around on Tuesdays this month also with four different winners.

Debra Lamont, Judi Frost, Leanne Brooks and Julie Holland all notched up wins.

Although scoring hasn’t been fantastic I’m sure the girls will be looking for some continued improvement in the golf scores in the lead up to the upcoming club Championships.

Adelaide Plains Pistol and Shooting Club Natalie Centenera reports: The Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club at Korunye held the 2015 ISSF/PA (International Shooting Sports Federation/ Pistol Australia) National Championships from the March 29 to April 5.

The prestigious event was the 58th in the history of the Championships and was run by the South Australian Revolver and Pistol Association.

It is not the first time the Adelaide Pistol Club held the event, it was also host back in 2007 and 2011, and was chosen again due to having some of the best facilities in South Australia and the positive feedback received from previous competitions.

As the host club they supplied the venue and catered the significant event, with some visitors camping at the grounds for accommodation.

Early starts and late finishes were the order of the day as visitors from all around the country and the overseas enjoyed the competition and

London Olympian David Chapman. the club’s hospitality.

The club has recently had a new kitchen installed which was very busy over the match period as the club’s members volunteered their time to provide a welcoming atmosphere.

Well-known names involved in the sport were present including London Olympian, rapid pistol shooter, David Chapman.

Good weather was enjoyed throughout the competition, rain keeping away until the final night.

A big, belated, shout-out to the Two Wells Cricket Club A grade men’s side who made the 2014/15 season grand final in March.

Club president, Devon Hardiman, says the game against One Tree Hill was played at One Tree Hill on March 28/29, with the club unfortunately not taking home the win.

OTH batted first and were bowled out for 188, with Two Wells looking good after Sam Zanker took 4 for 24.

Travis Wake 3/64 and Lachlan Franklin 3/62 helped with the remainder of the wickets.

Lachlan Goss was the only resistance against the bowling attack with 30 runs.

Having lost the first innings Two Wells were put back into bat to see if they could try for the outright victory.

Franklin and Goss both made half centuries and Jason Harris with 30 pushed the total to 7/174, leaving OTH 51 to get off not many overs, which they made with the loss of two wickets.

Devon would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported the club during the summer by at attending games and functions or just by coming down to the oval to have a beer and check the scores. The club hopes to have a junior team back in the competition next season so keep reading this space to keep posted.

TWO WELLS JUNIOR NETBALL WRAP This year TWF&NSC has four junior teams competing in the Adelaide Plains Association. Here the coaches for each team give a run down of how the season is going so far. Congratulations to Claudia Devlin and Jade Macfarlane, who were selected to play in the association team at this year’s country netball championships in Adelaide.

Under 10s – coached by Tayla Southwell and Amy Spoolder Their first game was very nerve racking, especially for the new girls but they held onto the ball and didn’t let Virginia take the lead and the game ended in a draw. Our girls were much more confident in our second game, smashing it out taking a massive lead against Hamley Bridge and pulling out with a victory. Another awesome game whipped out of nowhere by the girls against United making that another win for them! Hummocks seemed like it was a really close game, back and forward a lot but still winning leaving the girls on top of the ladder. Their first loss was against Mallala, they didn’t play as well as they usually did but still a great game played by both sides. Finally their most recent game against Balaklava was a great game to watch, pulling out what they had learnt at training, and learning from the Mallala game gave them the win!

dyn Hansen, Taryn Sochacki, Taia Wallace, Kirra Robinson, Jasmine Borlace, Ruth Slattery, Carla Harris, Ashlee Filko, Mackenzie Cummins, Emma Barwick and Heidi Bates.

We have had an up and down start to the 2105 season so far. Our first game against Virginia was a close one with the Two Wells girls winning 16 to 15. A few first game nerves for all the girls trying to get a team flow going as well as trying to figure out how to play together but in the end the girls overcame some difficulties to secure the win for which they should all be proud of.

The second game against Hamley Bridge however was a real eye opener for the girls for the work ahead for the rest of the season. Unfortunately Two Wells lost that game 3 to 30. The girls still showed at times during the game things they have been learning at training which was fabulous to see, a few things to work on and I am constantly praying we start having some growth spurts!!!!

We are seriously lacking in height at the moment so more Weetbix girls!!!

The third game against United was a very physical game being played by a rougher and bigger team but the girls held their own and even though in the end they lost 11 to 16 it was a close game. It may be very different next time around so look out next time we play United!!!

Game four was away at Port Wakefield against Hummocks-Watchman. Going into this game we expected it to be a hard game as the Eagles girls had been having a good season so far, I even had thrown in the incentive that if the Two

Wells girls could win the game I would buy all 11 players lunch that day!! I kind of knew my money was safe but was so hoping to be wrong!! To the entire teams’ credit they tried hard but unfortunately we went down 9 to 18 but only losing by 9 goals was I thought an excellent effort as we were expecting to lose by a lot more.

Game five was back at home against Mallala who were sitting second on the ladder at this time. I had Tayla Southwell and Abby Playfair help me with coaching on the day as I had only got out of hospital the day before due to an asthma attack, so thank you so much girls for your help on the day. Mallala were a very strong team and our girls fought hard but we went down 8 to 37. It was a score line we expected but a lot of positives came out of the game as we had some of the girls having a try in positions that were new to them for the first time and they tried really hard and did a good job at their new positions. I was very proud of them having a go at something new that they were not used to.

Game six was away at Balaklava against the top side in the 13 & Under grade. We were prepared for a big difference in the score with Two Wells losing 4 to 32 but what I was most proud of was again the girls trying and succeeding in different positions they were not used to as well as with-standing a very physical game with a lot of body on body contact. They held their heads high and did not let the physical game get to them. The score no way reflects how the girls played and represented themselves and the club. I was so very proud of them as were

their parents with how they conducted themselves during the game.

Overall I have been pleased with the girls at training and their efforts in the first six games. We still have a lot of work to do and there will no doubt be a lot more ups and downs before the season ends but if the girls to continue to put in the solid efforts they have so far I have no doubt more success will be on it way. Keep up the good work girls and success will not be far away!!!

15 & Under – Coached by Gaynor Spoolder Hummocks def Two Wells 28 -13 We got off to a very slow start battling gusty wind and an equally strong Hummocks defence only managing 1 goal in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw us start to come to grips with the wind and find ways through the defence with Jade Morrison and Alicia Duthie teaming up to increase our score to 6. Claudia Devlin and Rhiannon Ludewig worked tirelessly defending against a well drilled attack. The third quarter was an even contest in which we went goal for goal with Hummocks with Jade Morrison continuing were she left off in the 2nd quarter with Chantelle Harrison joining Claudia in defence. The last quarter saw Hummocks take control of the game, with Steph Seres and Jess Romeo working tirelessly in the midcourt.

Best Jade Morrison & Chantelle Harrison Mallala def Two Wells 34 – 17 Whilst not reflected in the score this was a really good game Mallala are

currently second on the ladder and Two Wells matched them early with the whole team playing their role. Tanika Wearne showed off her defensive and the centre court of Steph Seres, Jess Romeo and Bonnie McKay combined well to feed our shooting teams.

Best: Claudia Devlin & Tanika Wearne Balaklava def Two Wells 45 – 24 Ending a pretty torrid run of strong teams we took on top of the table Balaklava in what was expected to be a difficult game. Balak got away to a speedy before start putting on the first 4 goals but to their credit the girls settled and managed to hold their own. The second quarter saw Balak continue their dominance pulling away slightly. The 3rd quarter saw a general lift all over the court with Rhiannon Ludiwig and Jade Morrison proving a strong combination in the circle and the defence of Alicia Duthie and Claudia Devlin holding their own. With support from Steph Seres, Jess Romeo and Bonnie McKay the girls made the most of our scoring opportunities with the margin only increasing by 1 goal. The final quarter also saw strong performances continue all over the court.

Best: Steph Seres & Jade Morrison U17 – Coached by Tanya Kent and Steve O’Brien A new team with new coaches. Our first game against Virginia was great, all played well. Then our next 3 games were not so good.

We won our last game against Balaklava, with the team really starting to get to know one and other.

Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club held a successful Come ‘n’ Try Western Trail clinic at the BZ Equine Estate indoor arena in Lewiston on Sunday May 24.

Local horseman and horse dentist, Paul Bethune, of Lewiston, instructed around 30 riders and their horses as they completed a variety of challenging obstacles.

The focus of this type of riding is patience and precision, with horse and rider working together to complete each challenge.

Paul, who was ably supported

by APEC president Tracey Smith, gave advice to riders as they went around the course, with beginners, intermediate and advanced classes throughout the day.

Some of the obstacles riders worked through included travelling over a bridge, side passing over poles, opening/closing a gate, jogging through poles and working around barrels and traffic cones.

Riley and Connor Moore, of Two Wells, will represent the state in the Rugby Carnival.

It is often said talent runs in families. For brothers Riley and Connor Moore this is clearly true, with both being selected to represent the state in the upcoming World Sport Rugby Carnival.

The carnival will be held on the Gold Coast from July 4-11 and is the first time 13-year-old Trinity College student Riley has been selected to wear the state colours.

Older brother Connor competed in the National Junior Gold Cup in February as part of the state Under 15 team.

Riley, who has high functioning autism, has been selected as part of a 24-member under 13 squad, which will compete against teams from across the nation and overseas.

He is currently playing his fourth year of rugby union for the Barossa Rams and trains up to three times a week.

Riley has also been chosen as the captain of the forward pack, which is a great achievement, says his proud dad, Shane, who says Riley is a dedicated and committed player who just loves the game of rugby.

What makes Riley’s selection even more memorable is the fact he only participated in one of four try-outs for the state team.

Selectors later watched Riley play for his club and selected him based on what they saw in those games.

Playing as a prop, Riley was last year awarded the Barossa Rams under 12 best forward trophy.

Jack shoots his way to top Report By: Marie Tapscott

Local junior clay target shooter, Jack Tapscott, has recently returned from Wagga Wagga, NSW where he competed in the National Clay Target Championships held from March 21-27. In February, Jack competed in the State Clay Target Championships held at the State Shooting Park at Virginia where he qualified 2nd for the State Junior team.

While in Wagga Wagga, Jack represented South Australia by competing against all other states in the shoulder to shoulder teams. The junior team finished 3rd in Australia with a very close 74/75 targets and 218/225 points.

During the week, Jack competed in three other events in the sub-junior category with about 16 other juniors. In Double Rise he finished equal 5th with 83/100.

In Handicap off 21 metres, he was placed equal 6th with 43/50.

He then achieved equal 3rd with 117/125 in the 75 target Champion of Champions event before shoot-offs for final placings. It was a great week of shooting and catching up with friends from all over South Australia, and a terrific experience for his first national event.

Bowling his way round Australia World record holder Chris Thomas has literally bowled his way across Australia.

The Victorian was in Two Wells last month playing a round of bowls against Two Wells bowler, Dick Magiera, as part of his bid to claim the world record for having played at the most bowls clubs in a single year.

That figure was 670, which Chris reached while in Tasmania in April.

He’s aiming for 800.

Introduced to the sport by his father - who was a keen bowler and died of prostate cancer a few years ago - 44-year-old Chris began his quest from Tweed Heads in July last year.

Raising funds for the Cancer Council, Chris has worked his way from bowls club to bowls club, taking in clubs from the bush to the city and everywhere in between.

He has collected just over

$32,000 in donations along the way, and hopes to reach his goal of $35,000 with the help of t-shirt sales by the time he wraps up his bowling odyssey in June.
