‘Liberty’ project with DCM

Development approval plans for the first stage of the proposed Hickinbotham residential housing development have been lodged with the District Council of Mallala according to its chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto.

Mr Mansueto said plans for the first stage of the development – announced as “Liberty” late last year – were currently being assessed by council staff against its development plan.

“This is to ensure it applies with the approved development plan of council,” he said.

Costings will be drawn up by the District Council of Mallala to create a “kiss and drop” zone in Hart Reserve near Two Wells Primary School following a meeting between the two parties last month.

This follows the presentation of a petition from the school last year to DCM in support of the zone, with a member of the school’s governing council also speaking at open forum.

Mansueto, said he was given a tour of the school site in late January and witnessed first-hand the traffic congestion and parking issues the school is concerned about.

“A costings report will be presented to council in either February or March,” Mr Mansueto said.

“Subject to council endorsing the proposal we’ll need to undertake community consultation as it’s Crown land and will require the minister’s approval.

n Letter to the Editor n Defending Christmas parade kids In response to John Allen, Two Wells RSL secretary’s letter to the Editor published in the January Echo – ‘desecration of memorial.’

It was a shame the young children of our town could not use the footpath (6-7 metres wide) and a bit of lawn for parents to sit out front of the RSL memorial for their Christmas concert (which they had used around five weeks prior with great success and the scouts held a sausage sizzle which also raised a reasonable amount).

Instead, I watched kids sitting in spilt soft drink and people’s rubbish on the road as the other parade goers walked

through the crowd trying to watch their children perform.

These kids are our future and a big part of the reason I believe a man would go fight for his country My two (and I am certain many others) are at that memorial every Remembrance Day paying respect to those who have served, including their own grandfathers. Is this really what our community is about?

This may not get anywhere or make a difference but it is at least off my chest and I have voiced the opinion of many long-standing locals.

Former Australian Defence Force sniper and new Two Wells resident, Craig Hansen, has had a long road to recovery since being badly injured in the line of duty in 2008.

While serving in Afghanistan Craig was travelling in an armoured vehicle when an improvised explosive device (IED) struck.

A sergeant at the time, commanding the battalion sniper section, Craig, along with two other Australian soldiers and one Afghan interpreter, was seriously injured in the blast, which saw him spend 11 weeks in hospital and many more months undergoing operations, rehabilitation and physio.

At the time he was only the second Australian soldier to be injured in the war in Afghanistan.

Later he was diagnosed with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and discharged from the ADF in November 2013.

Due to his extensive injuries, Craig, 38, is unable to work at any time in the future, but is determined to be as independent and as selfsupporting as possible.

He, along with wife, Kelly and children Jaudyn, Tayla and Jayke, recently moved to a small property at Two Wells, which requires a ride-on mower to help him maintain the grounds.

To assist him with this, a group of ex-service organisations, including Vietnam Veteran’s Association, held a fundraising event at the Linden Park RSL on Friday, January 31.

Other ex-service organisations also chipped in with the effort, as did Bunnings, with football commentator and Vietnam veteran, Graham Cornes, a special guest at the event.

“As strange as it is, mowing your lawn can be quite therapeutic at times,” Craig said.

“Being outside, listening to my iTunes and mowing the lawn is quite relaxing.”

He suffered extensive injuries in the blast.

Craig said he had been given great support throughout his long road to recovery and is appreciative of everyone’s efforts to help him.

“We don’t go out there to get blown up and have all this sort of fanfare,” he said.

“But on one hand it’s been good in the regard the Royal Australian Regimental

Association, the RSL, that’s what they are there for, to support wounded, injured and ill soldiers.

“And the support my close friends and mates gave was awesome.

“I look back and see photos of inside the vehicle, different weapons, stuff that was

cut in half, stuff that just disintegrated and I got out of the vehicle and didn’t have any body parts missing.

“As some of my mates say, I was lucky.”

Lucky – maybe. Brave – definitely. Thanks for your service Craig; you are an inspiration to us all.

Unique plan for war memorial

Over the next few weeks the Two Wells War Memorial will undergo a rapid change.

The local RSL club has been hard at work fundraising for the past 12 months to create its unique, one-of-a-kind Afghanistan memorial garden, where 41 Australian soldiers killed in action will be honoured.

The WW1 memorial monument will also undergo restoration, with cleaning, realignment and foundation works all set to go head.

Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, said the Afghanistan memorial project would consist of a newly constructed paved area at the back of the memorial site, allowing for wheelchair and pram access, with each marble memorial stone listing the name of the soldier, their service number, and having a small rising sun emblem etched into it.

A larger rising sun emblem will be attached to the arch along the back stone wall of the site and roses are set to be planted between the memorial stones.

Growth plan will protect ‘food bowl’

ANGLE Vale is the next township on the list to benefit from the Playford Growth Areas Structure Plan, recently endorsed by the State Government.

The structure plan is a comprehensive plan for growth in the Playford area – the result of extensive consultation between the government, local councils and the community over a threeyear period.

The plan maps out where housing, retail, commercial, industrial and community land will be located, as well as infrastructure and services in the area.

Minister for Planning, John Rau, can now approve the first rezonings in Virginia, which will provide up to 1100 new residential spaces while protecting the vital Virginia food bowl.

The next stage of the process is expected to contain the township of Angle Vale and the Playford North (Munno Para West and Downs) extension – once infrastructure agree-

ments have been finalised.

Light MP, Tony Piccolo,left, said the structure plan would help the area develop in a coordinated way.

“The areas near Gawler have been identified as a major growth region,” Mr Piccolo said.

“But it’s vitally important we ensure we get the zoning and infrastructure right so we can make this area as vibrant and sustainable a place to live as possible.

“This staged release ensures land does not get rezoned unless the infrastructure agreements are in place.”

Mr Piccolo congratulated the hundreds of small landowners who have engaged in the process and acknowledged that the process had at times been difficult for them.

lead the infrastructure negotiations and agreements for the next stages.

Mr Rau said when rezoned the plan would secure a total of 17 years residential land supply for Greater Metropolitan Adelaide and, with the approved rezoning of all parts of the Playford Urban Growth Areas, will add a further four years land supply for the region,” Mr Rau said.

“This meets the three key criteria for orderly greenfield rezoning.

One, infrastructure agreements are in place off the back of a detailed structure plan. Two, rezoning is phased and orderly and maximises the efficient use of existing infrastructure. Three, the target of 15 years zoned land is secured.

“We have reinstated social infrastructure policies, protected the Virginia food bowl by providing for appropriate separation distances between farming land and residential development, and have allowed for horticultural activities to continue as the land develops for urban purposes,” he said.

Australia Post reviews Angle Vale service THE pending expansion of Angle Vale has led Australia Post to review the services it provides to people living in and around the area.

A number of residents have called for expanded services from the local post office, prompting Light MP, Tony Piccolo, to contact Australia Post seeking a review.

“The local post office is an important part of any community,” he said.

“It’s essential that the Angle Vale post office is ready to meet the needs of this growing area.

“Residents feel the local postal service should provide a wider range of services – including online financial services – and I’m pleased Australia Post will now be looking at what services they provide.”

In response, Australia Post Manager, Kym Altman, advised Mr Piccolo that “as residential areas expand and demand for local services increase Australia Post acknowledges the importance of maintaining reasonable convenience to our services.”

“At the same time, we still must

attempt to strike a balance between the reasonable requirements of the community and our commercial obligations,” Mr Altman said.

Mr Piccolo said one of the key objectives of the new planning process was to ensure that infrastructure, both physical and social, was in place to support growing communities.

“While Australia Post is a Commonwealth Agency and not under the direction of the State government, I will continue to lobby them to ensure they recognise the needs of local residents.”

Strategy develops for region’s future horticulture growth

Plans to further develop the horticulture industry north of Gawler River have taken another step forward following a recent District Council of Mallala meeting.

DCM Strategic Projects Coordinator, Carol Muzyk said council received the findings of the Virginia and Northern Adelaide Plains Horticulture Study – Framework for Future Actions investigating the factors affecting the horticulture sector, as well as a series of recommendations to expand horticulture north of the Gawler River.

“The study has established a vision for the region as the premium northern food bowl for South Australia,” Ms Muzyk said.

“Now that the study has been completed council can consider the land division, allotment size and land use recommendations detailed in the report and decide on the best path forward.”

Later in the year DCM will start the process to change policies in the current Development Plan to facilitate growth of the horticulture industry in the Mallala region.

“The process we have to under-

take to change the Development Plan will take time,” Ms Muzyk said. “But we have taken a big step in a forward direction.”

DCM chief executive officer, Charles Manseuto said the next step for council is to review the many recommendations in detail and to identify which ones council may like to pursue further.

The study was undertaken in partnership with the City of Playford, Barossa RDA, PIRSA and the NRM Board with significant input from the horticulture businesses currently operating in the region.

District Council of Mallala Dublin ward councillor, Steve Jones, DCM mayor, Duncan Kennington, Landcare’s Mark Webb and local Thompson Beach resident and walking trail curator, Lionel Miller volunteered their time to install the seats at strategic points along the trail.

Funding for the walking trail project came from the Natural Resource Management (NRM) Coastal Seascapes program.

Lower Light’s popular political art piece, the cockroach, landed in Rundle Mall late last year and has become a major talking point amongst visitors.

Following an outcry from the public after it was removed, at the request of the landholders, from its site along Port Wakefield road, the State Government chipped in $1000 to have it restored, with well-known media personality, Andrew “Cosi” Costello behind the push to have the piece showcased in Adelaide’s central shopping precinct.

Council plans open spaces

DISTRICT Council of Mallala will use a $30,000 State Government grant to develop master plans of major recreation and open space areas in the townships of Two Wells, Mallala and Dublin.

The funding is part of the 2014/15 Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program (CRSFP).

DCM was part of the development of the Barossa, Light and Lower North Region Open Space, Recreation and Public Realm Strategy (2013), which was done in partnership with the State Government and Regional Development Australia – Barossa.

The strategy aligns with the vision, targets, relevant strategies and policies of the 30-Year Plan for Greater Adelaide by contributing to the critical land use arrangement and effective planning and growth outcomes.

Council will seek the

services of a consultant to prepare the management and master plans for these precincts.

The area currently has a population of more than 3,100 with large increases expected when meeting the 30Year Plan for Greater Adelaide.

Total cost of the project is estimated at $60,000.

The International Gun Club State Shooting Park, at Buckland Park, also picked up a CRSFP grant of $7,750 to replace two skeet clay target launchers which are more than 15 years old.

The club has recently been allocated the annual State Skeet Titles, and in 2014 the International Gun Club will host two Australia Cup events at the State Shooting Park.

With a total project cost of $15,500 the Club will contribute $7750 in cash and volunteer labour.

“It is a big hit with kids and at times (they) have to wait a turn to get a selfie.

“It’s been a great source of interest and amusement for many.”

The cockroach is set to remain in Adelaide’s Rundle Mall for a few more weeks.

Duncan Kennington On Wednesday, January 1, I attended the Pt Parham Sports and Social Club Gala Day. A large crowd enjoyed a warm day with the band Heartland performing.

Tattoos and a bouncing castle were there for the children. I considered getting a tattoo but there weren’t any peace signs available.

There were races for all ages, the rolling pin toss, wool pack race, egg tossing and gnome throwing.

I was invited to enter the beauty pageant but declined in order to give others a fair chance.

We all enjoyed the usual Parham hospitality with good food available at reasonable prices and of course the bar was open.

Thank you to Lola Western, Raelene Schwerdt and the organising committee for providing a great community event.

• On Friday January 3 I attended the birthday party of the districts’ latest centenarian, Pat Baker.

Pat is a long-term resident of the region previously residing in Gawler before moving to Butler’s View in August 2007.

I presented Pat with a photograph of rural South Australia, taken by Australia’s famous photographer Ken Duncan.

Pat had a wonderful day supported by family members, and staff and residents of Butler’s View.

• As I write this during the heat wave (as the temperature is heading up to 41C) it is an opportune time for all of us to consider not just our own health and that of the elderly, but also ensure a water supply exists for the birdlife of the area.

It isn’t onerous but will ensure that birds will survive and thrive in this district.

obin Trevilyan is a quiet man with a humble nature. You may have encountered him, unknowingly, about Two Wells over the years, volunteering his time and experience to various community initiatives.

The Uniting church benefits from his gardening expertise as he manages the grounds, tending to the garden – pruning, watering and fertilising (he has won numerous local awards for his own garden).

The Two Wells public school is fortunate to have his help when the church holds a barbecue for the students.

His involvement with the Rotary Club of Two Wells has seen his handy work contribute to the construction of the footpath from the main street to the historic wells, and a garden retreat at the school.

However, this discreet ‘man about the town’ also has a prolific resume in agriculture.

This, coupled with a creative sense of entrepreneurialism, which started way back during his school days when he sold stamps to his classmates, makes his life, so far, a fascinating story.

Born in Adelaide in 1944, his family moved to Banana in central Queensland for eight years when he was 16, and he quickly became a ‘rich teenager’ selling eggs from the chickens he kept on their farm.

“Dad would drive me down to the mines where I would sell them to the local miners for 65 cents a dozen,” he explained.

His keen sense for business saw him approach the workers laying the concrete foundations for a new supermarket in a nearby town.

He was pointed in the direction of the site-manager, who gave him the details of a gentleman in Brisbane who his contact with culminated in Robin supplying the eggs to the future grocery store.

He sold eggs for eight years and was dubbed by the industry inspector, suspicious of his production volume, “the most efficient egg producer in Queensland”, he fondly recalls.

Whilst still in Queensland, Robin befriended a local pig farmer who mentored and assisted Robin with this new interest and was able to show him the benefits of growing livestock in a modern style piggery.

CELEBRATE HONOUR OUR PEOPLE AND NATION LIKE many other communities in our region, Australia Day in the District Council of Mallala was celebrated with a delicious breakfast of sausages, bacon, eggs, toast, coffee and juice enjoyed by a crowd of more than 170 people at Mallala Oval – and wonderfully cooked by members of Mallala Lions Club.

It was a beautiful summer’s day and four district residents were among thousands of people across the country who made the pledge and became Australian citizens.

Local individuals and community groups were also recognised for their efforts, commitment and community spirit with the presentation of the annual DCM Australia Day awards.

In his second term as DCM mayor, Duncan Kennington spoke of how the Australian community was continually evolving and highlighted Australia Day as the perfect opportunity to appreciate all that is unique and special about our country.

“Australia Day is a great opportunity for residents to get together and celebrate as we embrace the opportunities that are available to us as part of a contemporary, diverse and democratic nation,” Mr Kennington said.

“Today is a day on which first Australians, older Australians and more recent Australians can come together to tell their stories and share their dreams.”

Mayor Kennington then invited local member for Goyder, Steven Griffiths, to speak.

“It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been here or where you’ve come from,” Mr Griffiths said.

“To me Australia Day is a great day (and) as a nation it’s important we celebrate it, that we have pride in it. “We have to celebrate what’s important to us as Australia can be many things. “(And) it does demonstrate

Join the dots to fight the fox foe Most of us within our region have pets of some kind, be it a dog, horse or chickens.

Having the option of keeping animals is one reason why a number of people live within our district, but as owners it is our responsibility to manage and look after their welfare to the best of our ability.

Recently I lost a number of chickens to a fox. I have had chickens for a number of years and thought I had made my chook yard fox proof. Sadly this was not the case.

I have been a victim to these feral pests over a number of years, as have a number of my friends; I am sure many of you as well.

I believe these animals do not belong within our region.

The fox (Vulpes vulpes) is one of the most successful predators in the world.

Their diet consists of one-third wildlife, one-third pest animals like mice and rabbits and one-third livestock.

Foxes were first introduced to Australia in the 1870s.

They have spread to become one of our major vertebrate pests and are a major threat to our livestock, small native mammals, birds and reptiles.

It has been estimated tfoxes cost more than $227 million in terms of loss of production to the agricultural industry, ongoing costs of control, and loss in biodiversity.

I recently came across a fantastic website, where I believe I can contribute to help reduce the incidence of people going through the same anguish as I have.

The site is FeralScan.org.au, which is a government website that enables

the user to map feral animals and the damage they cause.

This website focuses on a number of pest animals, with one being foxes.

This program allows you to record and map sightings of foxes.

You can create a map showing all the fox records in your local area or create a map of your data.

When you have one sighting of a fox that is all you have, one dot on a map but when you have several sightings you have several dots on a map and that can paint a picture of where and when foxes are active.

Imagine if a majority of us who have had fox issues could map where foxes have been. This information could then be compiled and we could then narrow down where foxes are living.

The collated data would provide up to date evidence to the appropriate agencies such as the Natural Resource Management Board, which could then co-ordinate and implement fox control programs to reduce or eradicate these feral animals from our region.

The success of any project depends on how many people are involved.

I believe we can help eradicate these animals from our area if we work together.

CFS warns risk isn’t over yet FOR RENT

For the past three months local CFS volunteers have been responding to an average of one call out every day, according to Two Wells CFS captain, Adam Harris.

And with the state suffering through its second heat wave of the summer recently, and more hot weather on the way, property owners need to be prepared and vigilant.

The brigade has also attended a variety of fires across the state, including the recent devastating Eden Valley fires, and

fires at Ceduna on the Far West Coast, Flaxman Valley, Krondorf, near Tanunda and Bangor, near Pt Pirie.

“This is huge compared to last summer,” Adam said.

“We’ve had a lot more major fires, hotter conditions and it’s been drier too.

“We haven’t had any significant summer rains this year, so everything is crispy, crispy.”

Adam advised all landowners to ensure they have a bush fire ac-

tion plan in place, saying the CFS website had a lot of information and advice to help people get started.

“We’ve done 129 call outs since the start of the financial year,” he said.

“And in October, November and December we did over 30 calls each month, so that’s almost once a day.

“And they’re not just little call outs either, they’ve sometimes been for hours on end.

“There have been a lot of man-hours involved.”

A grass fire near

Gawler River Road on Wednesday January 29 burnt three hectares and destroyed a shed but fortunately its contents were saved and no one was injured.

Adam said the fire started as a result of a pile of lawn clippings spontaneously combusting.

“If clippings are piled up they can build up a lot of heat and then combust with a bit of wind and off it goes,” he said.

“If it’s spread out it doesn’t usually happen.

“If people are going

to be using their mowers at this time of year they really should consider having nearby a shovel, rake or hose in case of any sparks, because it does happen, people need to use caution and not be complacent.”

Having easy access to water, preferably rainwater in case of a power outage, was also a good idea, Adam said, as was a fire pump on their rainwater tank, or a petrol-driven pump attached to their pool.

CFS volunteers have

also attended a few minor road accidents over the summer including one at the intersection of Brooks Rd and Old Port Wakefield Road, Two Wells where the rescue helicopter landed on the oval.

According to the website willyweather.com. au, over the past month Two Wells recorded its highest temperature of 45.4 degrees on January 16, its lowest of 11.2 degrees on January 7 and had an average temperature of 24.7 degrees.

Anne Porter, who has held this role since 1999, had the honour of accepting the award on behalf of the group, and was part of the initial push by local residents to establish the group.

Mrs Porter said back in 1988 the group was known as Rural Watch and were one of the first such groups in South Australia.

New sub committee will develop young players

After more than a decade leading the Two Wells Netball Club as president, long-serving member and player, Tanya Kent, has stepped down from the position.

Taking up the role for the first time is Stephanie Walker, who is playing her fifth season at the club this year, with Tanya stepping into the treasurer’s role.

As well as being a junior coach in previous years, Steph has been an integral social committee member, coordinating a variety of fun social events throughout the season for the past few years.

She was also the club’s netball secretary last year.

“I’m very excited about the 2014 season,” Steph said.

“2013 was planned as a development year for the senior girls and after some very strong performances in the finals I feel we will continue to improve in 2014 and hopefully come home with even more premierships.

“As a player I am itching to get back out on court, but as a

committee member I am really looking forward to unveiling the new and improved facilities at the club.”

A focus of Steph’s this year is to promote training and development in the netball club, with both junior and senior players to undergo coaching and umpire courses.

Steph is also excited about the establishment of a junior netball sub committee at the club.

“The junior sub committee has great enthusiasm and some really good ideas, so I look forward to working with them this season,” she said.

“At this stage we will be fielding all senior and junior grades.

“Our numbers where high last year and we have a handful of senior girls returning to the club this season, so we hope to have some very strong sides.

“We have received a couple of coaching applications, but all positions are still open for applications and I would encourage anyone interested to contact us.”

Pre-season training commenced last month and the first official grading trials will begin on Tuesday February 18.

For the first time in the Two Wells Netball Club’s long history, a junior sub committee has been formed to support, nurture and develop junior netballers.

Consisting of Andrea Humphrys, Christine Musolino, Tracy Seres, Rachel Wendland, Leanne Bates and Gaynor Spoolder, the committee is enthusiastic about sharing the work load to promote and foster junior netball development at the club.

Speaking on behalf of the committee, Andrea Humphrys said, the new sub committee was a great opportunity for the club to become more familiar with its junior members and their families, and better equipped to support them throughout the season.

“We’re also looking at coaching opportunities for children and developing a confidence in umpiring,” Andrea said.

A whole team focus will also be a propriety of the committee, which hopes to meet on the third Thursday of each month starting on February 20.

Pre-season training begins

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday season. It’s just about that time again and preseason training started in late January.

This year the club is excited to announce Stephanie Walker as Two Wells Netball Club president, and thanks Tanya Kent for her fantastic service to the club over the past 10 years.

Thankfully, Tanya is continuing on the committee as club treasurer.

The club welcomes Briony Thomson to the committee and welcomes back Andrea Humphrys as junior netball manager.

Continuing on the committee from 2013 are Stacey Gameau (senior netball manager), Juanita Hamilton and Leah Clifton.

Other committee members include Francis Pellizzari (TWF&NSC president), Alison Goss (secretary), Lynette Seccaffien, Joe Cannizzaro, Tiffany Gameau, Ben Harris, Tony Lange, Eddie Stubbing, Devon Hardiman, Greg Spurling and Adrian Daly.

Senior netball pre-season training commenced on Tuesday January 28 at 7pm and continues for three weeks from this date.

Senior netball grading trials will start February 18 and will also run for three weeks. This year pre-season training will be on Tuesdays to avoid a clash with tennis training.

Training for the rest of the season will be Thursday nights.

This is a decision made by the TWF&NSC Inc committee to encourage all players to have dinner at the clubrooms, which in turn raises money for the club.

The first junior netball training will commence on Tuesday February 18 at 5.30pm, with teams to be finalised during the first three weeks.

Training times are then subject to coach availability.

Once again, in 2014 the TWF&NSC committee requires all players to wear club colours on game days. The club encourages players to be polite, display good sportsmanship and promote club pride. All players

will be rostered on for canteen, umpiring, scoring, timing and other club duties.

Applications have been received for coaching positions, however the club is still accepting applications for coaches and umpires.

After the success of NetSetGo in 2013, the club will once again run the program during Term 2, with more details to be announced soon.

If you are interested in playing netball for Two Wells please ensure you register in the first few weeks, as the club may need to have a maximum number of registrations.

It’s back into junior tennis school holidays are over and it’s time to get back to junior tennis.

I hope some of you were able to watch the Australian Open last month. Australia’s Casey Dellacqua did so well and will inspire our junior girl players.

Junior tennis started up again with the new school term, with the first matches on Saturday February 1…the season end will be March 8.

This term there is one division one team, two division two teams and only one division three team.

Team training will continue on Thursdays from 5pm, starting week one of this school term.

Beginner coaching is available on training nights, with Diane Meaney, for anyone who is interested, for a gold coin donation to the club.

Junior coaching with Grant Daniel will also resume this term.

The dates are: Friday February 7, Wednesday February 19, Friday March 7.

Each session is 40 minutes in length with groups two and three having a warm up time

beforehand. Cost is $8 per child per lesson.

Once again the club is offering an early bird discount for all the lessons at $25 per child if paid in advance.

The last games of the season, on Saturday March 8, will be followed by the club’s presentation day and AGM. We would like to encourage anyone interested in junior tennis and parents of players to attend this day and consider joining the committee to keep it going strong.

The club aims to promote and develop tennis skills in all school age children while fostering fun, fitness and friendship.

After a successful first season last year Two Wells Netball Club will once again run the junior netball introductory program NetSetGO. The club will hold a registration night for the 10-week program at the courts on Tuesday February 18 at 5pm, with the first NetSetGO session to start in the first week of Term 2.

Cost is $60 per child aged 5-10 years old and all participants receive a generous netball pack including a ball, bag and t-shirt.

Upgrade completion date set First home game will see new facilities Bec O’Brien reports:

The exciting promise of hosting this year’s Adelaide Plains Football League’s grand final in September has seen hours of volunteer legwork set the stage for the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club’s long-awaited upgrade to be appreciated by the rest of the league when the club stages its first home game against United on May 10.

In the meantime there is still much to be done, despite all the demolition work having been completed, the concrete slab being laid late last year and the framework for the new extension erected over the Christmas holidays.

TWF&NSP president, Francis Pellizzari, said while the club had originally hoped to have the project finalised by the start of the 2014 season in April, a completion date a few weeks into the season wasn’t too bad.

“The league was generous enough to change the club’s original first home game against Hamley Bridge on April 12 to the oval at

Hamley,” Mr Pellizzari said, and now it was time for the builders to get in and do what they do best.

The new extension and upgrade to the player change rooms has long been overdue, with the club often ruled out of hosting the major event of the year, the grand final, because of a lack of suitable changing and toilet facilities.

“That was what started the whole project,” Mr Pellizzari said.

“Our change rooms weren’t up to scratch.

“The need for better change room facilities that included adequate toilet and showering facilities was the main driver behind the project.”

Mr Pellizzari said the redevelopment, which included new bar and canteen facilities, extended dining area and verandah, as well as the improved and enlarged change rooms, an umpires room and merchandising area, was progressing well, with exterior brickwork and the instillation of new windows on the cards

This night is to be held in conjunction with the junior netball sign up night, with payment of fees by cash only appreciated on the night.

New players are very welcome.

Each paver costs $100 with a maximum of 34 characters.

Extra pavers per person/ family can then be purchased at $70 per paver.

All proceeds go towards funding the new building.

Mr Pellizzari said the paver initiative was a fantastic opportunity for past players and members, and the broader public to be involved in the project.

“It’s a chance to be a part of the history at the club again,” he said.

“Those pavers will be there for years to come (and) it’s a way for past people that probably can’t contribute financially to the project, to be a part of it.”

Christmas shoot a success Lower North Gun Club held its Christmas Shoot on December 22 last year.

Fifty-one shooters from 11 clubs across SouthAustralia attended for a fun and festive day of shooting, billiards and darts.

The club thanks those who travelled from Lake Albert, ‘Elsewhere’ (Jamestown), Wilkawatt, Port Pirie and Bordertown to help make the day so enjoyable.

The club provided a free Christmas lunch, and there were some terrific prizes such as baskets of goodies, turkeys and hams supplied by the various sponsors, whom the club thanks extensively.

Fun events ahead for equestrian group

Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club held its first event for the year on Saturday January 25 – a twilight trail ride through the beautiful Lewiston trail area.

Thirteen riders took part, with the group split up into beginners and advanced riders and everyone enjoying a few hours winding through Lewiston on their horses.

Ready to take to the pitch in Two Wells Cricket Club’s Australia Day 20/20 match were Lance Grant and Lachlan Franklin.

Two Wells Cricket Club staged a 20/20 cricket match to celebrate Australia Day on Sunday January 26.

Complete with slip and slide and wading pools, the fun format saw lots of big hitters in their element and great spectator interaction.

A hot lunch of roast meat, baked potatoes and salad was enjoyed by all, with the kids (including some big ones too!) taking great advantage of the water activities on the hot summer’s day.

The club’s season recommenced in January after the Christmas break and ends in late March so if you get the chance, head on down to the oval and support our local sports people.
