“I was absolutely floored. You do things for the community and you don’t expect this type of thing,” Norm said.

Along with wife Sue, Norm has lived at Thompson Beach for the past 22 years. They were the town’s first residents.

Norm continually has given his time to better improve facilities in the town and to fight for the protection of the fragile coastal environment.

A member of the Thompson Beach Community Association, Norm was pleased to help establish a community shed in the town this year and loves living in such a close-knit community.

“It’s God’s country here,” he said.

“I fell in love with the place. I love our little town, I love our little community. We’ve got great people who live here, and I really do love the whole area, the whole town.

“I don’t ever envisage moving away, it’s just a wonderful place to come home to. We’ve been all over the world and this is just a lovely place.

It’s like we’ve lived here our whole lives.”

Peter Seccafien, 22, has lived his whole life in Two Wells and was chosen for his commitment to community services, through his job as a police officer, his excellent schooling record as well as his dedication and support of the Two Wells Cricket Club and other local sporting clubs and community groups.

United Football Club’s 2013 APFL Grand Final event was named the Community Event of the year, with the Community Group of the Year award going to the Mallala RSL for its popular Sunday lunches and the Community Project Of the Year awarded to the Mallala and Districts Lions Club for its Mallala Oval toilet amenity project. n Continued Page 2

Mr Bell felt it was vital the blame game ended and planning for the future began.

“We’ve had the politicians fighting over who said what but the Wakefield Group doesn’t look at it that way,” he said.

“We’re keen to push all these great projects along, that’s how we roll.”

Wakefield Federal MP, Nick Champion, said the Wakefield Group was already working to advance substantial projects that had enormous potential to build economic activity and create as many as 5000 jobs in the north-

ern region of Adelaide. These included the Gawler Water Reuse Scheme, which had the potential to link with the proposed Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme, to provide an enormous water resource that could support a hugely increased food production sector.

The Gawler Water Reuse Scheme, which will initially provide 1.2 gigalitres of water to urban and rural users in and around the existing Greater Gawler area, has the potential to grow to about 20GL by 2040.

The as yet unfunded Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme, which would cost an estimated $33 million and provide a further 12GL of water for irrigation, would create a total of 2400 new jobs in construction and maintenance, and in the agribusiness activities it would support.

Other initiatives strongly supported by the Wakefield Group include electrification of the Adelaide to Gawler railway.

THE exact impact to residents in the District Council of Mallala area from General Motors Holden (GMH) ceasing production at its Elizabeth plant by 2017 is relatively unknown.

DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said he was aware a number of workers travelled to Elizabeth from the

area for work and said it would undoubtedly have some impact.

In 2011, 682 people (17 per cent of DCMs population) were employed as technicians and trade workers, while 600 (15 per cent) were labourers, indicating at least some of those residents would have worked for GMH or satellite businesses.

Council would be working with neighbouring local government entities to develop alternative employment options.

“We do look at strategies to promote more economic opportunities,” Mr Mansueto said.

“The horticulture industry is one that has had increased economic development in the area.”

Australia Day celebrations in the District Council of Mallala will be held at Mallala on Sunday, January 26.

This year District Council of Mallala will celebrate its annual Australia Day breakfast at Mallala oval, with a fully cooked breakfast catered for by Mallala and Districts Lions Club.

Starting at 8am, breakfast will be followed by a Citizenship Ceremony where Mallala will join with towns and regions across the nation in welcoming its newest citizens

This long-awaited upgrade, which had been due to start by the end of 2013 and be completed in 2015, was put on hold following the withdrawal of Commonwealth government support of $76 million in October.

The Wakefield Group also believes the existing Adelaide to Gawler line should be extended to facilitate new industrial and residential expansion at Roseworthy as part of the Roseworthy Economic Hub development.

This rail line extension is estimated to cost around $30 million and is regarded as part of the essential infrastructure required for what is proposed to become South Australia’s biggest urban development project with a population of up to 100,000.

Further transformative and job creating projects supported by the Wakefield Group include proposals by the City of Playford for a 50ha sports precinct, costing up to $50 million.

The development of a major health precinct, as well as the possibility to expand the role of the Commonwealth-funded Stretton Centre as a major opportunity to co-ordinate employment growth in the northern region of Adelaide, were also on the table.

“We’re very well set up in terms of the facilities we have on offer in the area for retraining,” Mr Bell said.

Lewiston project moving forward

SAFETY FIRST IN ‘KISS AND DROP’ PLAN

District Council of Mallala’s Lewiston Open Space study has now finished, with three options for focal points in the community put forward.

DCM Infrastructure and Planning Services strategic projects co-ordinator, Carol Muzyk, said the study was commissioned to ascertain the need for a focal point in the Lewiston area and involved engaging with the community through a survey and workshops to gather views in relation to a focal point.

“A community focal point is a place that provides the necessary social interaction and support of a community and can include a public park, library, civic hub, cafe, community centre and retail centre,” Ms Muzyk said.

“The whole crux of the project was to find out if there was a need for a focal point in Lewiston, and if there was a need, where this focal point, or points, should be.

“It was really important to find out what the community wanted (and) the level of inference that came out really demonstrated the view of the community; the playground, the horse keeping, the dog walking, these are all things residents valued.”

Ms Muzyk said while the results were mixed, the consultant identified a portion of the community would benefit from the establishment of a mixed use facility at either Claire Harniman Reserve or Hams Park, and a secondary community focal point provided by the redevelopment of the Hayman Road playground site.

Ms Muzyk said council had voted at its November meeting to progress to stage 2 of the project, where it would explore designs and costings for one or all of the sites identified in the study.

The second phase of the project also hopes to explore public and private investment opportunities.

Bec O’Brien reports: A “kiss and drop” zone near Two Wells Primary School will help improve safety for its students the school’s board believes.

The school’s governing council is seeking support from District Council of Mallala, theDepartment of Educarion and Child Development and local state MP’s for the zone, saying consistently high vehicle speeds along Gawler road were a danger to young children getting to school, and access to the Hart Reserve turnaround point on Old Mallala road was difficult and at times almost unusable.

TWPS governing council chairperson, Ernie Landherr, said a petition was presented to council at its November meeting and follows a similar petition lodged this time last year, which council did not support.

“We are asking for them to look at upgrading the Hart Reserve turn-around point,” Mr Landherr said.

“Our main interest is to have it turned into a ‘kiss and drop’ zone.”

Mr Landherr said he believed DCM was under the impression the school wanted to turn the area into either a car park or have a road entering from the Old Mallala road and exiting onto the Gawler/ Two Wells road, but this was not the case.

“Two Wells has had an increase in population in a short time and the Gawler/Two Wells road is becoming more

busy with increasing traffic,” he said “With more students enrolling next year than ever before at Two Wells Primary we as the governing council have to start looking towards the future and the paramount safety of our students and their families.

“In the best interest of all, a proposal will be forwarded to the Mallala Council in the near future asking it to upgrade the pathway, which is too rocky.

“Parents cannot push prams or strollers up or down (and) the upgrade of the roadway and the entrance/exit driveways off Old Mallala road has been an on-going issue for many years.

“Currently this road floods when it rains, which makes it

impossible to use during winter or any rainy periods.”

DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said council had agreed to meet with school representatives in mid-January 2014 and had endorsed at its November meeting to discuss the schools concerns and look at options for the area following this meeting.

Mr Landherr said TWPS governing council was looking forward to working with the council in the next year to improve the area for all to use.

Chrissie said congestion of traffic along Gawler Road had increased dramatically and the safety of children was paramount.

“Having a space where families can safely kiss and drop their children at school is very important,” she said.

“As the community grows we need to have facilities in place to ensure the continued safety of all families attending the school.”

Report tackles coastal challenges

District Council of Mallala’s Coastal Adaptations Study is progressing, with a report being tabled at council’s November meeting outlining a number of proposals.

The Coastal Adaptation Study – State of Play Report highlights the risks to each of the council’s four coastal settlements – Middle Beach, Thompson Beach, Webb Beach and Parham.

DCM Infrastructure and Planning Services strategic projects co-ordinator, Carol Muzyk, said the study focused on developing strategies to address rising sea levels, flooding issues and coastal erosion.

The report also aimed to give council a clearer picture of the coastal settlements and to plan for the short and long term future of these settlements.

In the report, five broad options to adapt to rising sea levels are put forward to council: •Protect: use various means such as construction of sea walls, beach sand replenishment or installation of drainage swales to protect existing development; •Accommodate: use means such as raising buildings, protecting buildings from flooding; •Retreat: abandon settlements and

move development inland in the face of rising sea levels. The concept of ‘retreat’ is also known as ‘planned retreat’.

•Defer: threats have been assessed, and perhaps costs and options analysed but there are valid reasons to wait until to a later date to act.

•Do nothing: ignore the risks and do nothing.

“The study started with the gathering of information about the settlement history of the four towns and past flood events,” Ms Muzyk said.

“Council sought help from the commu-

nity to provide vital information that helped to complete the first of two study reports, namely, The Coastal Settlements Adaptation Study – State of Play Report.

“It’s important to get the community on board and take them on the journey of the study.”

Ms Muzyk said the adaptive solutions would be described in a second report set to be released for public consultation in the New Year.

A workshop will be undertaken in February for the community to hear more about the study and the adaptation strategies proposed.

I was saddened to hear that a jumping castle was placed on our war memorial during the street parade.

This is a total lack of respect to those who have not only paid the ultimate sacrifice during war but also to those who suffered and still continue to suffer.

Whoever gave permission to place a jumping castle on a war memorial should hang their head in shame.

Nowhere else would anyone desecrate a war memorial in such a way.

Holiday break for RSL meals

Two Wells RSL kitchen will be closed for meals until Friday January 24 but the RSL will open on a limited basis on Fridays between 4pm and 7pm.

No meals are available during this period. Normal hours of operation will resume on Wednesday, January 22.

ENJOYING a bright start to their day were many local business people, council and RDA representatives.

A taste of local knowledge Local business leaders and entrepreneurs had the chance to swap numbers and broaden their networks at a breakfast on December 3 in support of a new campaign promoting the benefits of shopping locally.

Held at Two Wells Bowling Club and led by the Barossa Regional Development Australia team, the breakfast was the second such event following a relaxed after work get-together earlier in the year, with the focus being on local traders meeting other like-minded people in the area.

Barossa RDA chief executive officer, Anne Moroney, said the gathering was a great opportunity for local business people to talk, share ideas and learn more about

the services on offer in their immediate area.

“It’s a really good idea for businesses to get together to talk about the business growth predicted for the area,” Ms Moroney said.

“It’s also about encouraging not only residents and community members to shop locally, but also businesses to shop locally.”

The breakfast was staged under a new campaign, Totally Locally, which promotes the benefits of supporting and knowing local business traders.

Ms Moroney said the RDA was currently in the process of establishing a guide for prospective investors detailing what services and businesses were currently available in the area.

“The Livability Guide is mainly for investors,” she said. “It’s aimed more at somebody who is thinking of moving to the district and letting them know about what family-type services there are, such as school’s, community clubs and doctors.

“It’s a taster of what’s in the district to attract inquiries for investment.”

Ms Moroney said the booklet would consist of individual chapters devoted to each of the Barossa RDA’s council areas and within that, specific townships.

“It’s a snapshot to give people a feeling for the kind of amenities in the town,” she said. We can build on it, this is just the beginning.”

The booklet is hoped to be available early in 2014.

Plenty to hear at Leesa’s ‘listening post’

Schools, more local police, council roads and flooding issues were just some of the concerns raised when local member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, held community “listening posts” around the district in December.

Taking in Virginia and Lewiston, Ms Vlahos said such open public forums were a great way to meet local residents and discuss issues of importance to them.

Ms Vlahos said this years’ attendance at the sessions, particularly at the Virginia Shopping Centre, was the best response she’d had in the last four years.

“I’m just trying to listen to what I need to know about things that are happening in the local community,” Ms Vlahos said.

abs ‘n Life is a unique educational and dog training program giving disadvantaged and disillusioned young people the skills and confidence they need to succeed in life, and it all started in the back yard of one Lewiston resident.

Sue Dansie has spent the best part of her life teaching and working with children and young people, and she also has a great passion and love of dogs – Labradors to be precise.

The Labs ‘n Life program was developed by Sue in 2007 after she realised the positive impact working with dogs could have on students at risk or in need.

A breeder of Labrador retrievers for around 20 years, Sue said the relationship between children and dogs was very special and was a great opportunity for disengaged students to achieve success, build confidence and participate in positive life experiences.

“The dog is a social facilitator,” Sue said. “That social facilitation is really important, it gives the students a real boost with what they’re doing.”

The program runs about 50 dogs across the state, with small group situations held at schools and community sites where students are involved in all aspects of dog training.

“We provide an opportunity for kids at risk to learn how to train Labradors to be companion dogs for kids with special needs,” Sue explained.

“It’s a two-pronged thing; we’re engaging kids who have problems going to school, for whatever reason, and at the same time we’re providing a dog for a child who needs support.

“The students see what they’re doing as something quite worthwhile to the community (and) they’ll end up training a dog that will help someone else.”

The program aims to train around eight companion dogs each year, with more than 140 children taking part in the process.

One of the program’s dogs recently featured in a magazine article where the story highlighted he had saved the life of a young autistic child on three separate occasions.

Sue said it was this kind of reinforcement, that what the program is about in the end – helping build relationships – that makes it all worthwhile, and the children involved in the program can feel they’ve played a part.

“The kids we are working with haven’t had a lot of success,” she said.

“But training a dog, teaching a dog to just catch a bit of food, that’s success for them.

“And seeing the dog years down the track, seeing what it can and has done, that is really positive for them.”

Through the program literacy and numeracy aspects are constantly being reinforced, with Sue utilising every opportunity to engage the students in learning activities and using these as a “vehicle” for positive math and literacy learning.

Children eight years to young adults 23 years of age are involved, many from broken homes or disadvantaged backgrounds, and the program was an outlet for them.

Many high school students use the program as a way of working towards a Certificate 2 in Community Service while others gain SACE requirements. Others still have the

opportunity to show the dogs at events like the Royal Adelaide Show.

“What we’re about is a positive life experience,” Sue said. “The kids will get that nurturing feel. We see kids picking these puppies up and nurturing them.

“The dogs really bring out the calmness and caring of the kids, they really recognise the kids (and) we look at the positive aspects of their personalities and also what the dogs themselves can do.”

The dogs involved in the program were initially picked from Sue’s own litters, but are now specially bred, with children helping to name them following a specific theme.

Some pups have been named in the nautical vein, like Brindabella, and Buccaneer, others have a Hollywood theme, others still are named after beaches or deserts.

It’s just one way Sue continues

to incorporate learning aspects into the program.

“We’re value adding,” she said.

“It’s a matter of building a relationship and looking at what the kids can do, not what they can’t. Kids can then go on to mentor other kids in the program and it becomes a family for kids that perhaps haven’t had a real strong family presence.

“We teach relationships really and how you build a relationship, and it really does give them strength and confidence.”

As one Adelaide school involved in the program commented: “Students have an area in their lives now that provides them with experiences in which they are 100 per cent successful. They are responsible for their dog and have developed a sense of belonging. They have an avenue to express affection in a safe environment. It is great to see students cuddling their dog with big smiles on their face. The annual Two Wells Street Parade has seen in another year, with the event again well attended and showcasing a variety of stalls, entertainment options and of course colorful floats!

A warm afternoon provided the perfect backdrop for local families, and many friends and visitors, to soak up the carnival atmosphere while strolling the street and taking in the large variety of stalls.

The parade itself was full of colour, laughter and fun, with Santa announcing his arrival with the ringing of a bell.

Two Wells Regional Action Team vice president, Bev Smith-Trim, said the night was a great family-friendly event and a terrific way to celebrate the end of the year.

“I think it was a really good crowd, and the new stall holders were really happy,” Bev said.

A number of businesses along the street got into the spirit of the night by decorating their premises, with special guests, Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, and Hickinbotham’s Two Wells project manager, Ruth Vagnarelli, given the honour of judging all categories of the competition, including the many floats of the parade.

The trophy for best decorated business went for the second year running to the Commercial Hotel.

Families Learning and Growing (FLAG) won the best parade entry, in the community category, for their Noah’s Ark float.

The Two Wells Pet Food and Fodder Store won the best business entrant in the parade.

Lewiston resident, Brooke Humphrys, was named as the Two Wells Street Parade princess.

Be active challenge pays for Virginia PS

Claire’s bare after her ‘Greatest Shave’ Bec O’Brien reports: I said it last edition and I’ll say it again this edition; young Virginia resident Claire Horsler is one inspirational girl.

In support of the World’s Greatest Shave, the 11-year-old Virginia Primary School Year 5 student had her lovely long blonde locks shaved off on Monday December 9, an action which brought a tear to many of those who had gathered to show their support.

Claire’s hairdresser uncle, Kym Coombs, of Glen Osmond road hair salon Hair By Kym Coombs, did the honours, taking just minutes to cut what had taken more than a decade to grow!

And over the past two months she’s impressively raised more than $2000 to support research into blood cancer Leukemia.

Proud parents, Michelle and Mick, along with big sisters Emma and Lauren, as well as extended family, school students, staff and friends, watched as Claire sat through the haircut with a huge grin on her face.

Mum Michelle, said the event was very emotional and she was so proud of her youngest child.

“I’m so, very, very proud of her,” Michelle said afterwards. ““She really is one of those kids who thinks of others, not herself, she’s very giving, and even this (getting her head shaved), she’s not thinking about what she’s doing but that people are donating and what she can do for other kids.”

Claire was inspired to join the World’s Greatest Shave after watching a segment on television and quickly garnered the support of her family and then her teacher, fellow classmates and students across the school.

Year 4/5 teacher, Marie Lionello, spoke before Claire went under the clippers, saying she was an inspiration.

“Claire is very, very brave, and she’s courageous and she’s generous.

Claire and her family would like

to thank all those who have supported the cause. “It means a lot to me knowing that I’m helping to find a cure for cancer and supporting research but at the same time helping families who need support,” Claire said.

Two local school children from Virginia Primary School joined other South Australian students who received a Premier’s Be Active Challenge Award in November.

VPS teacher Voula Pounendis and Year 7 students Grace Nicol and Mihali Pounendis, pictured, accepted the award from South Australian premier Jay Weatherill.

Virginia Primary School was awarded with a $1,000 grant to promote physical activity within the school after being named as one of the 50 highest achieving schools in the state.

To participate, students across the school completed at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day over five days for 10 weeks.

In conjunction with their regular twice-weekly PE sessions, some of the activities the students took part in included team games such as cricket, netball and basketball, special lunchtime activities, dance sessions and riding scooters and bikes.

“It was a great way to broaden their ideas about being active,” Year 6/7 teacher Voula Pounendis said.

“There was some amazing sharing of skills like dancing and karate (and) there’s been more involvement of the students and understanding that there are a variety of sports that they can be involved in.”

After 10 weeks of daily physical activity all students who participated received a medal of achievement.

Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos said it was great to see the school recognised for its commitment to developing and furthering the health and fitness of its students.

“They have a motivated school community that is passionate about a healthy lifestyle,” Mrs Vlahos said.

The school hopes to use the funds to conduct a Gymnastics SA program for its students in 2014.

School is out for 43 Two Wells Primary School Year 7 students who celebrated the end of their primary schooling with a presentation and dinner at the Two Wells Community Centre on Wednesday December 11.

Dressed in their finest the students, along with family and friends, witnessed as school awards were presented to Hayley Duthie (Neville Sharpe Community Award), Oliver Hill (Carolyn Hart Academic Excellence Award), Amber Phillips-Goudron (Noal Oakley Outstanding Sports Achievement Award) and Caitlin Musolino (Dean Anderson All Rounder Award).

Heading into Year 8 next year, the class of 2013 will be spread between Gawler District College, Balaklava High School, Horizon Christian College, Xavier College, and Urrbrae Agricultural College.

concert Two Wells Primary School celebrated the end of the school year with a concert and family sausage sizzle on Tuesday December 3.

With summer rain falling steadily all afternoon and thunderstorms feared, the planned outdoor event was transferred to the school’s gymnasium, where it was standing room only for the parents, family and friends who had come to see their loved ones on stage.

Many students, and audience members alike, had dressed in festive colours and costumes to create a great atmosphere and some students were even brave enough to deliver standout solo and group performances in singing, dance and calisthenics during the interval.

Some of the concert items included a cute rap rendition of Itsy Bitsy Spider by Reception students,

A roaring good time a funky song ‘Jingle Base’ by Year 1 students and ‘Santa Wear Your Shorts Tonight’ by Year 1/2 students.

Older students showed their talent by performing a play titled ‘A Christmas Carol’, which funnily featured the Grim Reaper, and many classes showed off their dancing skills through a variety of boppy songs, including the Year 3/4s who danced to Katy Perry’s popular single ‘Roar’ and the Year 5s who shook the stage to Redfoo’s ‘Let’s Get Ridiculous’.

Great achievements by working together For the past five months I have been on work placement at District Council of Mallala, working on a number of projects within our region.

Having lived within our district for more than 25 years and involved with numerous community groups, it has been a great opportunity to work and gain a better understanding of some of these projects and to see the tenacity and resilience of the many volunteers who work tirelessly to improve our region’s assets. This is what keeps our community strong.

But the work done by our volunteers is only part of the story.

The successes of any communitydriven project is measured by how the wider community value their contributions, be it the local football club or a revegetation project involving the Landcare Group.

I believe the recent Two Wells street parade attended by about 5000 people was a perfect example of what a community values and what can be achieved when we all work together.

• District Council of Mallala contains some of the most sensitive and significant Coastal ecosystems of all of metropolitan Adelaide.

Several years ago a concerted effort involving a number of community groups established the Thompson Beach South to Third Creek Trail.

This trail provides an opportunity for people to re-engage with nature, and learn about these relatively unmodified coastal/estuarine habitats and of the ecosystem services that these coastal environments provide.

Unfortunately, instances of vandalism and people illegally riding their motor bikes through this fragile coastal reserve have damaged some of the improvements these community volunteers had constructed.

Funding through the Natural Resource Management Coastal Seascapes program has enabled a number of community groups including Friends of Thompson Beach, Port Parham

Social Club, Two Wells scouts group, Landcare and the Aboriginal Learning on Country team ,to work towards reinvigorating the trail to its former glory.

When Finished these improvements will make anyone’s visit a memorable experience with extensive interpretive information about the flora and fauna, seating throughout the trail where you can sit and watch the birds on the local lagoons, or have a picnic on one of our region’s best sandy beachs.

One of the best ways we can protect these environments is to value them.

For this to happen it needs a combined effort from all of us, so next time you want some time out or somewhere for the kids to fish, crab or just swim in warm shallow waters, then Thompson Beach South Third creek trail is a great place to explore.

To get there, travel to Dublin and turn left and follow the signs to Thompson beach. When you get to Thompson beach turn left along the esplanade and follow until you reach the interpretive shelter at the entrance to Thompson beach trail. Enjoy and see what our local communities are involved with.

Cycle safety Two Wells Blue Light Group was happy to fund students from Two Wells Primary School’s Reception to Year 2 classes to attend the Road Safety Centre at Thebarton.

The centre allowed the students to ride the bicycles around a course, which has traffic lights, railway crossings and pedestrian crossings.

The purpose of the centre is to help teach the children road rules, along with how to stay safe on the road.

This was a very informative session and all the students had a good time.

John is leaving to join Barossa Highways and Gary Wills will be taking his place.

• Neighbourhood Watch will be on holidays

• The Two Wells and Lewiston area has been a target for interference of motor vehicles, where peoples’ belongings have been taken from cars.

Please, do not to leave belongings in cars.

Thefts from vacant blocks and houses have increased, along with the council’s grader having its diesel and tools stolen.

Be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to police on 131 444.

• Report by FLAG co-ordinator Colleen Sheedy-Palethorpe Families Learning And Growing (FLAG) ended the year on a high, winning the Best Float award at the Two Wells Christmas Street Parade.

The collaborative efforts to produce the ‘Christmas Noah’s Ark’ float (complete with live animals, dressed-up children – and some adults in ‘onesies’) demonstrated how resourceful and crea- NEWS FROM tive this group can be.

Special acknowledgement goes to Karen McColl and her family, and neighbours Laine and Pam, who organised the beautifully adorned horses, ducks, dogs and rabbits.

Thanks also to Tanya Wilson who once again implemented her artistic skills in transforming a trailer into an‘ark’, using art-work completed by the FLAG children during the term.

• In the last Echo, it was accidentally reported Tanya was a former member of FLAG. This certainly is not the case. Tanya is looking forward to co-leading more children and families through another year of activities and adventures in 2014.

• FLAG will start up again on the first Friday morning of Term 1 – with a fairy tale theme.

• ON Friday, December 6, attended a lunch for some of the residents of Butler’s View at the Dublin Institute.

Deputy mayor, Mark Wasley, entertained us with stories and pictures from his adventures on the high seas. Pat Thompson and Ian Telfer organised the event and prepared mountains of food.

It was so delicious I accidentally ate too much main course and couldn’t squeeze in any of the equally delicious looking dessert.

• On Thursday December 12 the Mallala Street Parade was preceded by the official unveiling of a commemorative plaque for the Motorsport Walk of Fame by Clem Smith, OAM and Glen Dix, OAM. A healthy crowd attended to witness this event and celebrate the history of motorsport in Mallala and the immortalisation of some of the key characters of the sport.

Subsequent to the unveiling we made our way to the Mallala oval. We were treated to a display of cars ranging from Maseratis to an ancient fire engine. I’m now determined to start a savings plan to purchase a Rolls Royce.

According to my graphical calculator I should be able to put a deposit on a second hand one in less than 50 years from now.

• On Friday December 13 the Two Wells street parade was happening.

On this occasion we were treated to an alternative display of vehicles. Of course a cheerful familyfriendly atmosphere pervaded the evening.

Walking up and down the street socialising was thirsty work so I stopped in at both of the Two Wells watering holes, which I highly recommend.

Angle Vale Primary School held a successful family fun night on Thursday November 28, with funds raised going toward new playground equipment.

Students organised a range of fun and interactive stalls including a plant market, lucky duck bobbing activity, icing biscuits, pre-loved goods stall and much more.

Families involved in the school’s Pedal Prix team were kept ran a sausage sizzle and the choir also entertained with a variety of Christmas carols.

T w o We l l s l o c a l , Devon Hardiman married Caroline Wohlfeil on November 9 in the armory gardens of the South Australian Museum.

Both live in Black Forest but Devon is originally from Two Wells and Caroline from Karoonda.

Devon’s parents are James and Patricia Hardiman, and Caroline is the daughter of Clinton and Leanne Wohlfeil.

The couple have a young son, Hugo.

Bill, Gloria mark 90 years Bec O’Brien reports:

Two Wells couple Bill and Gloria Milton celebrated their 90th birthdays at a gathering of family and friends at Two Wells Bowling Club in early November.

Married for 63 years, they have three children and five grandchildren, all of whom were present.

Sons David and Peter, with their wives Helen and Kathy, made the trip from Perth, along with granddaughter Sally, while granddaughters Kimberley and Courtney flew in from Sydney for the party, and grandson Ben travelled from Melbourne.

The eldest grandchild, Anthony, and his partner Renae didn’t have quite as far to travel, as they

currently live at Mawson Lakes where both are studying for PhDs. Daughter Kay and her husband Mark Boon of course live “just around the corner” just outside Two Wells township.

Bill, one of eight children, four of whom are still alive, was delighted that his elder sister, Grace Newell (now 91) and younger brother Tom Milton (87) were able to attend, although his youngest sister Rhoda Hollitt, who lives in Kimba, was not able to join the party due to ill health.

Women run into form IN action for Two Wells Gold, in the women’s cricket match against Smithfield on December 9, is Renae Smault. Leanne Pool reports on Two Wells Cricket Club’s progress so far this season…

Two Wells has two women’s teams again this year, Gold and Black.

The Two Wells Gold team have been putting in 100 per cent, but were losing games in the A grade by a decent amount, so a drop to the B grade should see them put a few wins on the board.

Two Wells Black began the season in the B grade due to the younger up and coming talent getting out and having a go.

The leading run scorer for Two Wells Gold is Megan Curry on 96 and a three-way tie for the bowling is Rebecca Pool, four wickets, Jessica Pool, four wickets and Stef Aworth on four wickets.

Two Wells Black has Megan Akeroyd leading the runs with 75 and a two-way tie for the bowling sees Cassie Wing and Krystal Wilmshurst on four a piece.

Up until the Christmas break the men’s teams have been struggling to fill two teams. Hopefully this improves after Christmas as more players become available.

At time of print the A grade won two games and lost three. The team

is currently sitting sixth on the ladder.

Having the same team on the park for a few weeks in a row will boost the teams’confidence and hopefully bring home more wins and a spot in the finals.

Consistent bowling sees Travis Wake leading wicket taker on six wickets.

Leading the batting is Eamon Featherstone on 335 runs.

The B grade has won three matches and lost three games, they are sitting fifth on the ladder. The leading run scorer is Adam Harris on 162, and leading wicket taker is Clinton McDonald with six wickets.
