Kennington elected mayor Councillors vote to replace Strudwicke In a close vote, Lewiston councillor Duncan Kennington has been elected by his fellow councillors as the District Council of Mallala’s new mayor.

Kennington was nominated for the mayoral position by Cr Tom Summerton, with incumbent mayor, Marcus Strudwicke, nominating himself.

The meeting was adjourned partway through proceedings while CEO Charles Mansueto – who was acting in the chairperson’s role – left the room to confer with

council’s lawyers. The CEO was seeking clarification on item 2.4 in the LGA’s guidelines for electing a chairperson, after Cr Strudwicke raised concerns about a conflict of interest by Cr Kennington.

Reward for reading

More than 250 students at Two Wells Primary School took part in this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge, which saw the school invited to attend a special reception at the Adelaide Zoo on November 9 to acknowledge their success.

Students who had read the most books throughout the challenge were chosen to attend and included Connor Barnett, Paige Scott and Danielle Raschella. Unfortunately, Danielle was unable to attend.

TWPS teacher and librarian, Angela Heuzenroeder, said it was a terrific effort by staff, students and parents. Winning more than $100 worth of books was a great addition to the library.

The school also received a framed certificate of achievement. As part of the challenge students were required to read at least 12 books, with some reading more than 30.

f you’ve ever had a need to visit the local Two Wells Medical Clinic, then chances are you’ve already met talented Eleisha Arbon.

And you may just be wondering why her face looks that little bit familiar.

Perhaps she waited your table at one of the Melodrama Group performances when she was younger, or maybe it’s up on stage in costume where you’ve seen her before?

It could even be one of your children or grandchildren, your sister or brother, have been taken under her wing during Schoolies week in Victor Harbor.

However you recognise Eleisha, or if this is your first introduction, she has many gifts and talents and generously shares them with people far and wide.

Born and bred in Two Wells, Eleisha is practice manager of the Two Wells Medical Clinic, and has been for the past four years.

After graduating from Trinity College, Gawler in 2002 she completed a double degree in Bachelor of Business (Administration Management) & Bachelor of Commerce at the University of South Australia in 2006

and currently lives in Gawler.

Not content to sit on her laurels, Eleisha also has a Certificate of Youth Ministry, Diploma in Practice Management and a Certificate in Project Management.

Volunteering and helping others is something Eleisha has done her whole life.

It is part of who she is; something she is committed to and something she has done through her church, through her work, and through her love of music.

With her mum, Anne Arbon, a trained singer and founding member of the Two Wells Melodrama Group, younger brother Hayden, and dad Robert, she grew up in a house of music, singing and drama, and first took to the stage performing with Balaklava Community Arts when she was just 15.

Her stage debut with Two Wells Melodrama Group was just three short years later at 18.

Prior to this, Eleisha helped out at the Melodrama performances as a waitress and was head of house as a teenager until she put up her hand to give performing a go.

“I love being on stage and playing different roles,” she explained.

On his return, Mr Mansueto informed councillors the lawyer advised there was no conflict of interest and councillors then voted. Cr Kennington won with 6-5 vote.

Councillors who supported Cr Kennington included Terry Keen, Anne Picard, Steve Jones, Tom Summerton, and Joe Daniele. Those in support of Mallala councillor Marcus Strudwicke were Mark Wasley, Karen McColl, Yvonne Howard and Jan Heley.

Cr Kennington comes to the 12-month position of mayor after a year in the deputy position and thanked his fellow councillors for giving him the responsibility.

Cr Kennington said he was looking forward to the challenges of the next year. He replaces Cr Strudwicke, who had been the unopposed mayor since November, 2009 – his second term as mayor. n With this news breaking as The Echo went to press, read more details in the Plains Producer.

“It gives you an opportunity to find different parts of yourself that you didn’t know you had (and) the cast is brilliant, everyone brings so much to the group and are all incredibly valuable.”

Also a trained singer, this year was Eleisha’s tenth Melodrama show, a great achievement for one who is yet to turn 30.

The circus-themed show was also her first as director and co-script writer, challenges she thrived on and loved.

“I really enjoyed being the director,” Eleisha enthused.

“It is easy to be able to picture how you want something to look but putting it into motion can be tricky.

“I have always had an eye for it, was always seeing scripts and watching shows and coming up with ideas of how I’d do things differently to get the message of the story across.

“I loved seeing my vision for the show come to life on stage.”

Eleisha shares her love of the arts through her involvement as a team leader of the Scrip-

Eleisha shares her many talents to help community ture Union’s MADD (Music Art Drama and Dance) camp every year held in September at Halbury. The camp runs for a week and sees Eleisha help co-ordinate the leaders and campsite, cook for the many participants, organise and lead activities, and generally make the week enjoyable for all involved.

This role no doubt stood her in good stead for her involvement with the Green Team at Schoolies Week in Victor Harbor this year and in 2011.

The Green Team, or GT as it’s known, is made up of volunteers from Christian churches all around the state and is co-ordinated by Encounter Youth, a faith based, not-for-profit charity based in Adelaide.

“A friend of mine has been on Green Team for years and always said how much fun it is and encouraged me to come along,” Eleisha said.

“My response was usually something along the lines of ‘how much fun can looking after vomiting teenagers be?’.

“But it turns out I was wrong – volunteering at schoolies was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had.”

Eleisha says she has made lifelong friends and met some wonderful people through volunteering at schoolies and it was no different at this year’s event.

She was one of more than 600 volunteers who helped keep the thousands of schoolies, who converged on Victor

Harbour on November 17 and 18, safe.

Based at the Port Elliott Caravan Park, where around 650 schoolies were staying, Eleisha worked with other Green Team volunteers to prepare, cook and deliver,sausage sizzles and pancake breakfasts every day, with the team even dishing up a yiros dinner one night for the school leavers.

“It was just as good as last year, with lots of fun and celebrating,” she said.

“The message is getting through about safe partying, so most schoolies looked after themselves and their mates.

I met some really great schoolies who have some really wonderful dreams and goals.”

District Council of Mallala is in the process of progressing plans to revitalise the Two Wells Town Centre.

Driving the process is council’s newly-appointed Strategic Projects co-ordinator, Carol Muzyk.

Having recently returned to local government after working as a consultant to BHP Billiton on the proposed Olympic Dam Expansion, the multi-skilled Ms Muzyk is keen to progress the realisation of the council’s plans to revitalise the Two Wells town centre.

“The population of Two Wells is predicted to grow to between 8,000 and 10,000 when the Hickinbotham development north of the town centre is complete,” Ms Muzyk said.

“Existing township facilities and services will not be adequate to accommodate demands generated by the new residents.”

Ms Muzyk cited recent studies as determining sporting club fa-

cilities in the town as inadequate, with no capacity to accommodate additional members in football, netball and tennis teams.

There was a real need for a multipurpose community centre to cater for all age groups to bring existing and new residents together. Ms Muzyk envisioned a centre which could be used by a range of community groups for meetings and activities such as craft, recreation, learning and leisure.

“District Council of Mallala is evolving,” Ms Muzyk said.

“It has so much to offer to current and new residents (and) I have been pleasantly surprised at its diversity. We have distinct and ecologically valuable coastline and towns rich in heritage and character, all surrounded by some of the state’s most productive farm lands.”

Ms Muzyk said there were a number of opportunities to create a vibrant focus for community activity in the town centre, which

Two Wells Public Library, library services coordinator, Anne Sawtell, said the program was led by the State Library of Queensland, in partnership with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), plus other libraries across Australia.

The Summer Reading Club is a free school holiday program with activities designed especially for children from preschool to 16 and their families and friends.

“The program is delivered on a national scale, allowing participants opportunities to connect with children right across the country, with more than 1,100 public libraries registering their participation,” Anne said. The theme is “Untangled Tales.”

The “Main Street Design Guidelines for Two Wells– South Australia” provides a master plan for the town.

These plans show locations for potential civic, library and community centre redevelopment and pedestrian and cycle connections to the new development area.

There are also plans to encourage revitalisation of the shopping precinct in the hope it will provide additional support to current retailers and bring new retailers into the town, Ms Muzyk said.

“The guidelines will provide a foundation on which council will further build upon to soon develop the blue print for the town centre expansion,” she said.

“It’s an exciting place to work (and) I am really thrilled to yet again be in a role where I can utilise my skills in both environmental management and town planning”.

Now the PM’s award for Anita

One local Adelaide Plains resident is leading the way in secondary science teaching and has been recognised for her dedication, commitment and teaching practice with a Prime Ministerial award at a gala dinner in Canberra recently.

For her contributions to teaching science, Lower Light resident and Salisbury High School special education science teacher Anita Trenwith has been awarded the 2012 Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools.

The $50,000 award is the highest recognition for secondary science teaching in Australia and was presented to Mrs Trenwith by the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

It is an award Mrs Trenwith can still hardly believe she has won.

“The application was completed back in May and I had thought no more about it until I got a phone call at the end of Term 2,” she said.

Anita Trenwith received her award from Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and Senator Chris Fisher.

“When they said ‘you are the recipient of the 2012 Prime Minister’s excellence award for secondary science teaching’ I thought I must have misheard and when they repeated it I actually asked if it was a ‘gotcha’ call. It wasn’t!

Mrs Trenwith has a passion for making science in the classroom interactive and hands on and was

the 2011 recipient of the Australian Museum Eureka award for Science or Maths teaching and has also been named a regional winner in the South Australian Public Teaching Awards Inspirational Secondary Teacher of the Year for the past two years.

She says her priorities in science are to make it fun and accessible to everyone and to give students the chance to question the world around them.

“I believe everyone needs to understand some science, regardless of their vocational aspirations,” she said.

The $50,000 prize money will help Mrs Trenwith live a dream of participating in the biannual Science at Sea cruise from Vancouver to Alaska and also enable her to take along a few friends, including husband Ray, and seven-year-old son, Toby.

he Australian Red Cross is “the power of humanity”, with the group reaching out to millions of people across the world, and has long been an organisation synonymous with everyday people voluntarily giving their time, effort and energy to help those in need.

Youth make ‘natural connection’

I recently came across a project within the botanical gardens in Adelaide.

It was a crop of wheat covering an area of 425 square metres – this is the area that is needed to supply a family of four with bread for a year.

This project emphasises the importance and relationships of agricultural and food production.

Due to large areas of urban development many people have lost that connection with the natural environment.

I am glad to say a proportion of our young people within our region have not lost this, in fact their connection with the land has increased.

Wells primary school were not only involved in the growing of fruit and vegetables within the school garden; they were also utilising their crops within the school canteen.

This program also promotes healthy eating habits to foster lasting behavioural change.

I have had numerous parents tell me because their children are growing vegetables at school, they now want to grow them at home.

These parents are now busy making vegetable gardens, with some informing me their children wouldn’t eat broccoli or cauliflower before but now they want to grow it for a meal.

I have even heard they want to help save the family money.

We all play a very important role in ensuring our young people and our lands are as productive as we can.

Our landscapes support a diverse range of uses that underpin environmental health and this happens to be one of them.

Council considers big changes DISTRICT Council of Mallala currently is considering potential changes to the makeup of council and processes of election.

Council is considering the number of councillors, also whether or not to persist with the ward system, and if so where would the ward boundaries lie?

The issue of whether the mayor should be chosen by the councillors or by the residents needs to be decided and also whether the council should change its name and if so to what?

From Lewiston ward Councillor Duncan Kennington the last few days. Also, while cycling recently I saw a squashed snake on the road – so I think it is timely for residents to think about safety.

If people wear closed-in shoes and jeans when walking around the garden then the brown snake,

the only snake prevalent in this area, will find it almost impossible to bite.

Also snakes are not aggressive towards people by nature so if you remain still and do not stir up the snake, it will not attack you.

In addition, do not provide snake friendly habitat near your house.

When I described my property to a snake expert, he described it as snake heaven, and suggested I was probably supporting a couple of snakes.

We just have to be careful and take sensible precautions.

Three times the fun for all

Two Wells Melodrama Group staged its second successful comedy night on Saturday, November 17.

The three-play program consisted of two short plays by TWMG, with special guests, Gawler Centre Players, also staging a comedy act.

TWMG president and stage manager, Lance Morgan, said the night was again a lot of fun and the hard work put in by all involved shone through.

“It was a good night and a really good audience,” Lance said.

“The performers all did a great job, they acted well, and I was very proud of them.

“They’re doing something really different from the normal productions.

It’s stepping out of the box for them (and) it is really satisfying to see the development and the exciting potential of the group for the future.”

was directed by melodrama group stalwart, Rick Bailey, while 30-year TWMG performer, Anne Arbon, adapted the Hugh Chesterman play, “The Pie and the Tart”, and also directed and starred in it.

Gawler Centre Players members performed “Pastiche” by Nick Hall and were directed by Terry Allen. All three plays struck a chord with audience members, with at times great interaction between the cast and those watching!

Next year’s Melodrama performance will bring back an old classic called “One Hump or Two”, which is an Arabian, desert-themed play set to be staged from May 11-25.

The show will include a three-course meal and again will be produced by Eleisha Arbon. Keep an eye out for promotion of this production and book your tickets early.

District Council of Mallala officially opened the $2.6 million redevelopment of its depot on Thursday November 22.

The development, on Aerodrome road, Mallala, has been under council consideration for the past decade but only came to fruition in the past 12 months, with staff moving into the new premises in September.

While the “makeover” was in force, works staff relocated to Two Wells.

DCM chief executive officer,

Charles Manseuto, said the depot upgrade was a long time coming but the end result provided best practice, comfortable and userfriendly facilities for the 30 depot staff and the general public.

“The final outcome has taken into account the current and future needs so that council can continue to deliver and improve services to the community,” Mr Mansueto said.

“It’s been a challenging process to get to this point but I think the outcome is a positive one not just

for staff but for the pubic too.”

Apart from two small sheds and a large open equipment storage space at the back, not much of the old depot remains.

Taking pride of place in the upgrade is the depot’s new workshop and wash bay, which now meets EPA standards and is complete with a specific welding bay, chemical storage facilities, workshop office and large storage area.

Out the front, the car park and entrance area has been revamped, with electronic gates improving

security and access to the depot.

And when DCM works staff are not out and about in the district improving local roads, ovals, gardens and streets, they now have spacious office accommodation, a meeting room and better amenities, including a roomy lunch room.

DCM will hold a public open day on Thursday, December 13, from 3pm to 5pm for members of the community to view and tour the new facilities. Tours will run at 3.30pm and again at 4.30pm.

Veterans recognised for their dedication

Bec O’Brien reports: Between them, these men have given nearly 80 years service to the District Council of Mallala.

Pictured above, from left, Sam Dunstan, Jock Kennison and Keith Earl have all worked for DCM for 25 or more years and have seen much change in the last quarter of a century.

Sam started out with the council as a young 20-year-old and was given the not so pretty job of the rubbish run.

It was a hands-on, physical job, which required him to lift countless bins and empty them into a truck.

Part of his duties also included cleaning the public toilets in the district, and although these tasks might not have been for the faint hearted, Sam reckons they helped shape his work ethic today and introduced him to some wonderful people.

“I’ve got to meet some lovely people over the years,” he said.

“There was an elderly couple in Two Wells who every Monday when I came to empty their bin, would produce some sandwiches and a cold can of Coke for me.

“It became a tradition to stop by on Monday around lunch time.”

In more recent years the 45-year-old has mainly been working with the road construction crew, a job Sam says he enjoys as it gets him outside, away from a desk.

Fellow employee, Jock Kennison, emigrated from Scotland in 1965 and has worked at almost everything.

Also part of the construction crew, today Jock primarily works the bulldozer but has also driven the grader and semi-trailer trucks, carting rubble from the council’s quarry to one

place or another. He has worked for DCM for the past 28 years, but prior to this was a member of the Australian Army, went to sea with the merchant Navy and mined in Africa.

Jock has some great stories. If you get the chance, ask him about the bulldozer he sank!

Current DCM depot operations co-ordinator, Keith Earl, has also clocked up 25 years with the council.

Keith is a Mallala-ian through and through, having attended Mallala Primary School and worked in the town as a mechanic. Keith started at council in August 1987 doing “a bit of everything” be-

fore taking on a role as driver of a tandem tipper. Keith was also a patrol grader driver on a seasonal basis.

His mechanical background has stood him in good stead at DCM and his current role involves co-ordinating construction and maintenance teams.

DCM CEO Charles Mansueto, said the men’s contribution had not gone unnoticed.

“The have been very dedicated and committed,” he said. “It’s great to recognise staff contributions to the community.”

The trio received commemorative certificates and a Bunnings voucher.

Damage to schools

Police will pay particular attention to schools in the coming weeks and over the school holiday period in an endeavour to minimise the amount of damage that occurs on school property after school hours.

Patrols will work in conjunction with local security companies and will utilise the Police helicopter to locate offenders.

Disco after Christmas parade

TWO Wells Blue Light will be holding a disco after the Christmas Street Parade, on Friday, December 14, at Two Wells Community Centre for youths aged 8 to 17 years. Entry is $5.

Doors will be open from 7pm as usual but for this disco only, we will accept entry until 8pm, to allow everyone to enjoy the parade first, then the doors will be locked until 9-30pm. There will be lots of giveaways and door prizes, including a flat-screen TV and two special Christmas prizes.

This will be the last disco for 2012 so come and join us for a Christmas themed night of fun!

Life on the home front The South Australian governor launched an important book about Vietnam War veterans and their families in Two Wells on Sunday, November 4.

His Excellency, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, launched the book in front of an appreciative crowd of about 100 people.

“Beyond Dark Clouds” was written by Vietnam veteran, Dr Glen Edwards, and is a compilation of “honest, thought provoking, raw life stories” by veterans and their families and is the sequel to his acclaimed book “Vietnam: The War Within”.

Also present at the launch was Senator David Fawcett, Federal Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion, and Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, as well as the book’s author, Glen Edwards, and many Vietnam veterans.

Mr Edwards gave an emotion-filled speech to the crowd and spoke about the continued journey writing the second book

had taken him on. He highlighted the strength of the men and women who feature in the book, saying he hoped it would become an important monument to them and an essential resource for schools.

In the book’s introduction, Dr Edwards comments: “Little has been written about the social isolation of the partners and children, suffering from profound feelings of loneliness and alienation, and often consumed by dark clouds of depression, as they struggled themselves to keep the family together and the relationship intact.

“I felt the need to raise an awareness of not only the brave men and women who served their country, but their families who supported them.”

Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, was excited to have the initial launch of the book in Two Wells, saying it was a great opportunity to showcase the club and highlight

the plight of all war veterans.

“Having the initial book launch here, especially as this book is going to be launched all over Australia at many, many venues, and to have so many Vietnam vets attend, as well as having the Governor and many politicians present, was really wonderful,” Tony said.

“To hear the comments of the Governor and Senator (Fawcett) about our RSL being a bit of pin-up for community RSLs was terrific.”

• In other RSL news, Two Wells was recently awarded a Federal Government Community Volunteers grant of $5000. The cash is expected to go towards a new computer.

REMEMBRANCE DAY IN TWO WELLS

New Two Wells RSL members, the Bennett family, who have just moved to the area, laid a wreath in honour of Australia’s youngest fallen solider, Private John Harris, aged just 14 when he was killed at Gallipoli. ON Awarm spring day about 80 people attend the Remembrance Day service in Two Wells on Sunday, November 11.

Led by local RSL president, Tony Flaherty, poppies were handed out to those in attendance as wreaths were laid in honour of fallen Australians and in appreciation for those who are currently serving.

Mr Flaherty said it was exciting to see the growth of awareness about the armed forces from members of the community and to see so many people getting involved in not just Remembrance Day but also the Anzac Day service and general RSL activities. Members of the Two Wells Scout Group formed a guard of honour near the war memorial monument as a minute’s silence was held after the playing of the Last Post.

Following the service, a sausage sizzle was held at the RSL clubrooms, with many taking the opportunity to enjoy the family atmosphere and have a chat about their links to the armed forces and war history.

If you’re not playing Saturday tennis (and even if you are!), it’s time to dust off your racquet and pull on your tennis shoes for a night of fun social tennis.

The Two Wells Tennis Club is holding a one-off social night of tennis on Friday December 7 from 5.30pm.

Come along with friends and family to enjoy a fun, relaxed night of tennis, with a sausage sizzle. BYO drinks.

There’s no charge for the night, but donations in support of the club are most welcome.

Members from Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club competed at Belvidere Pony Club for the Lower North Zone Mini Zone Championships on Sunday, November 18.

The Mini Zone Championships are for riders who may not be confident enough or up to the level of competition at Zone Finals, which are held in the middle of the year.

TWE&PC were well represented with two teams of led riders, one rider in the sub-junior section and a team of senior riders competing in Horse and Rider of the Year (a combination of dressage, show jumping and a novelty course), Team on the Flat, team games and show jumping as well as individual dressage and show jumping.

Our riders were successful in all events; Kristy Pearn won the Senior Horse and Rider of the Year riding The Whole Shebang, and Lucy Smith placed second in the Led Horse and Rider of the Year, riding Bridgette. Both our senior team and led team where also successful with the seniors bringing home first in both the team on the flat and team games, and our two led teams taking out first and third in the team on the flat. Everyone had a lot of fun and is looking forward to this event next year!

With an ever-increasing number of greyhounds being offered for sale or adoption through dog rescue sites, and also the well-known Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP), Queenslander Sharon Farrow designed the Every Greyhound website to fill a gap in the adoption chain.

“There are many South Australian greyhound racing tracks but what happens to all of the greyhounds when they are retired from racing?,” Sharon questioned.

“Do they just get put to sleep by trainers/owners because there are no options for them?

“Do they advertise them in classified sections as a “giveaway” greyhound?

“Or do they take them to pounds to be euthanised?

“I have built this website to help the owners and trainers of these racing greyhounds so they can give them the second chance at life I’m sure they all want them to have.”

Sharon said the website had already seen two greyhounds find new loving homes since it was established and was hoping many more dogs would follow the same fate.

She said the site could be accessed by any greyhound trainer, breeder or owner, as well as dog rescue organisations, for free and was a faster way for more dogs to be seen by the general public.

The Adelaide Plains Kennel and Obedience Club staged a car boot sale in Two Wells on Sunday November 18.

Club trainer, Josie Hewson, said the first time event was a chance for members of the community to learn more about the club and also raise funds at the same time.

The club will stage its annual Championship Show on the weekend of December 8 and 9 at the South Australian Canine Association (SACA) park, Cromwell Rd, Kilburn. It’s a 6pm start and all are welcome.

Members are also invited to attend the club’s Christmas break-up night on Wednesday December 12 from 7pm.

Come dressed up in your favourite Christmas outfit, and don’t forget to decorate your pet too!

This is an ongoing effort by the team and the Foreshore Advisory Committee .

• The upcoming Christmas Parade arrangements were discussed and marshaling duties sorted.

• Concern was expressed regarding a proposal for a “Waste Water Plant and Ponds” (sewerage treatment facility) application,

“Having seen many Facebook groups desperately circulating the faces of greyhounds in pounds, at vet surgeries and from random free internet advertising websites seeking a place within a rescue group to save their lives at the last minute, I thought there must be a better way,” Sharon explained.

“I hope this website provides the options that must have been missing for this to have been happening to greyhounds all over the country so regularly.

For someone who sees the action of a greyhound in full flight as “poetry in motion” and is a self-confessed dog lover, Two Wells resident, Judi Hurley, has welcomed news of this new website.

Judi, in partnership with her husband, Peter, is a greyhound breeder, trainer and educator, and has been involved in the industry since the 1970s.

She has tens of greyhounds on her property just outside Two Wells, ranging from newborn puppies to “oldies” at 12 years of age.

“They make wonderful pets, they really, really do,” Judi said.

“They are very good around kids and are very tolerant.

“They are very low maintenance and they would quite happily be couch potatoes.

“But, because they can run fast, we make them.”

Judi has used GAP before, with great success, but said holding back the program was a lack of foster homes, where racing dogs could be cared for before being adopted out.

She said this new website would give those in the industry more options when trying to find a home for one of their dogs.

“Some of them (dogs) do actually want to be dogs,” Judi said.

“They haven’t got that competitive edge, that’s what makes champions, that real desire to race and win, and that competitive edge.

“What we have to try to do is convince the public out there that they make wonderful pets.”

Describing greyhounds as “supreme athletes” Judi said the breed was often maligned, with the general public frequently viewing them as “skinny, horrible dogs”.

“But they’re not, they’re super fit athletes,” she explained.

“They are streamlined, they are superb athletes and they’ve also got real personalities.”

TWRAT searches for secretary The Annual General Meeting of the Two Wells Regional Action Team was held on Wednesday, November 21.

Officer bearers for the coming year are: President, Eddie Stubing; Vice President, Bev Smith-Trim; Treasurer, Evelyn Dyer.

Unfortunately, there were no nominations for the position of secretary.

This is not a heavy job and we would welcome someone from the community who feels they can take minutes of a meeting once a month (third Wednesday at 7.30pm in the Catholic Church hall) and write a few letters on behalf of the team. The land is just west of the town at the corner of Buckland Park Road and Halstead Road West.

The proposal is for this plant to service the Buckland Park development as well as the Longview Estate and other homes east of the train line here at Two Wells. The team felt this was much too close to established homes (where young families reside), and also too close to the town as well.

It is understood a lot of protests have been lodged with council regarding this proposal.

Unfortunately the official closing date for submissions to council concerning this proposal has closed but the team will be monitoring any further information as it comes to hand.

Upgrade for cricket nets Recent cement work by the Two Wells Cricket Club has seen the club’s practise area take on a new lease of life.

Club president, Michael Dimasi, said cement was poured around the nets and practise pitch areas on November 13 to give players a better playing surface, with further development of the area in the future hoping to include a grassed area next to the nets.

The $4000 project sees the first improvements done to the practise area in many years, with Michael saying it was great to see the 12-month plan come to fruition.

Last time the area was improved was about eight years ago, he said, when the second pitch was cemented and the surrounding mesh fencing erected.

The cricket season is well underway, with the club fielding two senior men teams and two senior women’s teams.

been unable to field a junior team.

“It was very disappointing for the club,” Michael said.

“But the season is going along well and hopefully we’ll see some finals action.”

The association breaks over summer from mid-December until early January, with the season wrapping up at the end of March. New players are always welcome.

In other cricket news, about 15 keen youngsters turned out for the first Milo In2Cricket session at Two Wells on Saturday November 17.

Led by locals Francis Pellizzari, Leah Clifton and Greg Spurling, the eager group was soon having a go at bowling, batting, throwing and catching, with “Howzat!” echoing across the green throughout the session.

Milo In2Cricket will be held every Saturday morning at the Two Wells oval from 9.30am.
