Aussie beach babe

n LITTLE Mathilde Drexel might only be a relatively new Aussie – but she certainly lived up to our great tradition of beachside fun under blue skies at Middle Beach on Australia Day last month. At just 22 months she loved playing in the sand. Mathilde is the daughter of Michelle Drexel from Banksia Park and granddaughter of Middle Beach Shack Owners Association president, John Drexel and his wife Christine.

Federal funding boost for community projects

grade included the installation of soft fall and a shade sail that covers the existing playground.

The new playground for Lewiston means families with their children no longer have to travel about five kilometres to use a playground.

“These playgrounds will be a great place for families to bring their children to relax, unwind and have fun together,” Mr Champion said.

The Two Wells Library upgrade improved the structural integrity of the building with the use of steel tie rods in the walls as well as the

removal and replacement of bricks.

“The Library has been a local landmark since 1877 and is listed as a State Heritage Place,” Mr Champion said.

“These upgrades will mean the Library will be still be here for future generations to enjoy.

“Not only has the RLCIP program provided vital community infrastructure, it has supported the employment of Australians.

“These three projects supported the employment of 22 workers, which is great news.”

eet Jess. Chances are, if you’ve shopped at the Two Wells IGA, many of you already know Jessica Renaglia.

The 20-year-old, who celebrates that magical 21st in November, is one of the many smiling and friendly faces at our local IGA grocery store.

Or maybe you’ve been to a Melodrama Group performance in the past few years?

Jess has been performing on stage there for the past three years and has just taken on the secretary role.

However you know Jess once thing’s for sure, her cheerful attitude and positive outlook on life are contagious.

And if this is the first time you’ve been introduced, she has some sound advice we can all take heed of.

Jessica lives at home in Lewiston with her Mum, Michele, Dad, Antonio, 18-year-old sister Natasha and 13-year-old brother Alessandro.

Last month she packed her bags and embarked on her first interstate and international trip. In fact it was a trip of many firsts.

First time on a plane, first time leaving the country, first time cruising the South Pacific.

“I had never left the state before,” Jess laughed.

Jess attended Two Wells Primary from 2002 until 2004 and went on to Gawler High School where she graduated in 2009.

She is a familiar face to many locals, with a smile and friendly greeting to all as they shop at the local IGA. Jess has been working at the grocery store since 2007, and prior to this worked at the Classic Café in Virginia.

For as long as she can remember, Jess says she has loved writing and reading.

“I’ve always written in journals,” she said. “If I had things to work through, this is where I did it.

“You can always find me relaxing on my bed, writing or reading.”

In about Year 10, Jess decided she wanted to be a journalist.

She wanted to leave her mark on the world and after completing high school, started an International Studies degree with the hope of joining the often-cynical world of politics.

“I wanted to change the world,” she said. “I thought I could do it as a politician but I didn’t like it in the end.

I think I would make a good teacher but I wanted to do more than that.”

At some point in her life Jess would like to write a book, about what she’s not sure, but at this moment it doesn’t really matter. She also wants

Jess played junior netball for Two Wells and was a member of the choir at primary school.

In Year 6 she entered a newspaper story-writing competition in Gawler – and won. This was her first taste of being published and had her wanting more.

Jess is also an accomplished pianist, playing since she was 11, and says, if she wasn’t studying writing, she’d be doing classical piano instead.

“Piano is something if I had more time I would do more,” Jess reflected.

I find it very relaxing and quite challenging.”

The environment is also something that interests Jess, with strong involvement in nature projects throughout her high school years.

mental group, the Green Crew, and worked to introduce more formative recycling practices into the classroom and school grounds.

She was also involved in the establishment of the school’s successful wetlands project; something she says was very rewarding.

Entering her fourth year as a member of the Two Wells Melodrama Group, Jess says she had wanted to be involved for many years.

“You sit there and watch and you say, ‘I want to be up there’,” she said.

“I used to waitress at the Melodrama events and it looked like so much fun.”

Her first on-stage performance was in the group’s A Trip To the Outback show, where she played a “snooty, little American teenager”.

“It was so daunting for me,” Jess said. “But I love getting up there and

acting and being able to put on a show.

Jess has convinced her younger sister, Natasha, to join the group this year, who, according to Jess, is a great singer.

Last month Jess was accepted into the University of South Australia to study a double degree in Journalism and Creative Writing.

She is excited by the prospect of starting to make her dream a reality, and living in peaceful Lewiston is great incentive for writing she says.

“I love walking down the street and just seeing paddocks,” Jess said.

“It’s such a relaxed lifestyle here and I love the community atmosphere.”

Having achieved a lot in only a few short years, Jess urges all young people to make their own fortunes.

Her advice for anyone nearing the end of their schooling years is

“Because that’s your freedom.”

Jess is keen to travel in search of her dream job, and is even considering venturing to Europe or the USA to seek work experience.

“It wouldn’t matter if I was just volunteering at a newspaper somewhere at first,” she said with a grin.

“I remember wishing I was the one who won something.

“In high school I thought ‘why didn’t it happen to me?’.

“But you really have to make your own luck.

“You have to get out there and say ‘here I am and I’m good at this, this and this’. You’ve got to put yourself out there.”

Advice we can all take to heart – and words almost great for a book don’t you think?

Pedestrian rail safety

DCM Citizen of the Year recipient Mollie Frost accepts the award from mayor Marcus Strudwicke.

Residents in Tangari Estate, east of Two Wells, and surrounding streets are set to soon have a safer route across the Two Wells – Gawler Road, with construction of a pedestrian crossing over the railway line scheduled to being in April.

District Council of Mallala CEO, Charles Mansueto, said the long-awaited crossing had been delayed while land transfers between the Australian Rail Transport Corporation and council were finalised.

“This crossing will mean easy access for residents living in the Tangari Estate,” Mr Mansueto said.

“It will be a safe, pedestrian crossing across the railway line.”

Mr Mansueto said a footpath to the crossing was also part of the project, with work expected to take four to six weeks to complete.

It’s a little overwhelming – Mollie Frost

ollie Frost is a Twowellean through and through, and this Australia Day she was awarded the District Council of Mallala’s highest honour, as its citizen of the year.

Born at Leighton, near Burra, on Christmas day, Mollie is considered by friends, family and fellow residents to be an integral fabric of the Two Wells community.

She is well known in the district for her many hours of selfless volunteering, her contributions to an endless list of community groups and her willingness to help others.

“I feel quite chuffed and proud but at the same time I feel quite humble. It’s a little overwhelming,” Mollie said.

“But it’s the people you meet and the friends you make as you go that I love.

“I feel this is a great honour and something I will treasure for the rest of my life.”

Mollie’s magic an inspiration to all

Parade there is always a stall for Barkuma Sheltered Workshop run by Mollie.

For many years, as a committee member of the Two Wells and Districts Family History Group, Mollie has shown commitment and dedication to resourcing information for people to find and discover the history of their ancestors.

It is nothing for Mollie to go to the Mortlock Library or the Historical Library at Unley just to help someone find out about their family history.

Mollie enjoys the challenge and takes great pleasure in handing over the information to the interested family.

It is not unusual for Mollie, if she sees someone walking around the Two Wells cemetery, to join them and see if she can help in any way or direct them to the Two Wells Library where the Family History Group’s records are now kept.

Mollie joined the Two Wells Craft Shop in 1982, three years after its inception and is still a volunteer today – 30

years on. She is currently one of the managers and has also been treasurer for many years.

Mollie is the main supplier of home made biscuits, jams, sauces, chutneys and cordial for which there is much demand.

She handcrafts beautiful crocheted doilies, bookmarks with her butterfly magnets being the most popular.

A percentage of profits from these items is donated to the Red Cross and the Uniting Church.

Mollie is a valuable member of the craft shop who is always ready to lend a listening ear for anyone wishing to simply have a chat, or fill in an extra shift when others are unavailable.

Mollie has been involved with the Two Wells Branch of Red Cross since 1988, and has served as the treasurer for the past 18 years.

A capable and caring lady, admired by all who know her, she usually arrives with a carload of craft, cakes, biscuits, jams and pickles when there is a trading table.

Her happy smiling

face and ready laugh brings smiles to everyone’s faces when selling raffle tickets at various outlets.

Mollie is an exceptional lady, always smiling, helpful and someone who never turns down a request for help.

ARCUS Strudwicke has lived in Mallala for a quarter of a century, and for the past 12 years has been a member of the District Council of Mallala, the last two as mayor.

Last November Marcus was re-elected to the top position. He recently caught up with the Echo to reflect on the past 12 months and discuss what the next year has lined up.

Marcus and wife, Janet’s, four children, Toby, Shane, Caitlin and Lachlan, have all grown up in the district and attended the local primary school, so his connection with the town is strong.

Over time, Marcus said he was looking to become more involved with the community, so he joined the Community Development Board, using his background and knowledge of the manufacturing industry to help steer projects in the town.

“I wanted to get involved in the community,” he said.

“At the time I joined things were closing down. It was really about trying to address doing something to get things happening in the town.

“It was very rewarding to find that with the skills I had, it filled a gap on that committee.

“Things would happen that would have a real benefit, a real outcome for the community.”

One of the many things Marcus says the council has achieved over the past 12 months is flood mapping of the Lower Light River, an important step in planning for the future and preparing for floods, he said.

“We’ve never had any flood mapping of the Light River before,” he said.

“I like planning and process. I think if you lay out and have the steps, that’s where you can have progress.”

Marcus said the council had also been working toward building an asset management plan, which would reflect forward thinking in terms of looking after the council’s assets.

“Rather than it just be a case of responding to something when it goes wrong,” he said.

“We can plan for it for the future use of the community. We need to look after council’s assets for the future.”

In line with the push for better planning, Marcus said council’s risk management plan and structure of local committees was also a step in the right direction, making communication more direct and delivery of services more streamlined.

He highlighted the expansion of the D’Vine Ripe tomato plantation, the Lewiston Playground, council’s Two Wells Service Centre and Urban Design Framework as other things council had achieved recently.

– a $1 million venture bringing the depot in line with current environmental and waste water management practices, and lifting its accessibility to the public – as well as the council’s Strategic Directions Report.

“This looks at how development is planned,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity to make suggestions of change, for the community, industry and business to make suggestions about change.

“And that then leads to actual progress, even though it make time, if the steps are put in place from the beginning, things will happen.”

Another key focus for 2012, Marcus said, would be the Lewiston Open Space Community Study.

A study, he said, hoping to highlight the need for recreational growth in the area and help establish a blueprint for recreational growth.

“This is something we’ve needed for some time,” he said. “We really haven’t had a proper vision for the area and this aims to address the issues there.”

Marcus said as the Lewiston District grew there would be an increasing need for passive and active recreational facilities like ovals, tennis and netball courts, and open space.

As the Hickinbotham housing development gathers momentum in Two Wells, Marcus said council needed to be working on its Main Street Urban Design Framework to capitalise on this growth.

“That’s something council needs to be driving,” he said.

“If we don’t act for the development of the town of Two Wells in line with the Hickinbotham development, we’re going to see two separate centres, which is not what we want.”

In Mallala, one of council’s projects next year is the replacement of the town’s individual household septic system with a community wastewater scheme.

This scheme would completely replace all septic and soakage systems within the town, Marcus said, with funding for this project already secured.

A similar venture in Two Wells is also on the cards, with council looking at funding options.

Hickinbotham updates council on housing proposal Progress is being made on District Council of Mallala’s application to the State government for development north of Two Wells.

Representatives from housing developer Hickinbotham updated councillors at a closed meeting last month.

Charles Mansueto, said on January 16 councilors were given an update by Hickinbotham on how the Development Amendment Plan (DAP) for the proposed 2500-home development was progressing.

“Council is considering it (the plans),” he said. “Subject to council

endorsement the draft DAP will go out to public consultation later in the year.”

This consultation, he said, could take the form of informal community meetings, where residents could drop in and view the plan and then make comments or suggestions to council.

“It will be a good opportunity for people to understand more about the development and ask more questions,” Mr Mansueto said. “They can then formally be heard by council.”

Council was hoping to present the final DAP to Minister for Planning, John Rau, in August.

“Once he’s approved it, it becomes the development plan for the area,” he added.

“It’s reaching that exciting stage where people are actually going to see concept plans.

“Their input will be reflected in these plans.”

uncan Kennington has been a District Council of Mallala (DCM) councilor for the Lewiston ward for the past five years.

Last November he was elected deputy mayor for the first time, and is looking forward to representing the constituents of his beloved Lewiston even more.

“The good thing about being on council is that you’re in a position where you can help people,” he said.

“I would hope the skills I practise in my profession, which is communication (teaching) ... would transfer.

“I’m a connection between the mayor and other members and between the CEO and other members, and with the community (and) the goal to me has always been the same – it’s funneling opinions and distilling it into something workable.”

Duncan urges all ratepayers to become involved with “their” council.

He says we should all take the time to talk to our local councillors, to let them know what we’re thinking, what we want, what we don’t want, to just be involved.

“It’s not my council, it’s the residents council,” Duncan said.

“The more people who take an interest in council, the better.

“It’s got to be better for them.

“It’s about residents telling me what they want and then I will tell council what they want and if it’s possible we might see some action.”

Duncan is a keen cyclist and loves nothing more than getting on his bike and riding the streets and roads of the Lewiston area.

He is also an avid bird man, and enjoys watching for and listening to the growing number of varied and diverse birdlife in the area.

Duncan bought his dream two-and-a-halfacre block in 1986 and has spent the past two decades planting trees and living life quietly.

“When I think about Lewiston I love the place,” he enthused.

“It seems to me what defines Lewiston is the size of the blocks.

“And with this comes a certain lifestyle and a certain community.

“Two-and-a-half acres is ideal.

“We end up with these mini forests, immense wildlife and birdlife.

“Environmentally we’ve really got it right; it’s a fantastic environment.

Lewiston residents, it’s time to have your say.

District Council of Mallala is preparing to undertake an extensive community study on how open space is used in the Lewiston area, and they want to hear your voice.

As Lewiston councilor and newly elected deputy mayor, Duncan Kennington, puts it – “There’s a thousand houses here in Lewiston and I’m only one voice.

“I want to know what the other 999 people want.”

And so does the council.

DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, says the study is a great opportunity for residents, especially those in the Lewiston area, to really have an input into how the district, and in particular open space areas, is developed; and is urging all ratepayers to have their say.

“We are looking at growth in the Lewiston area,” he said.

“In terms of the community and recreational facilities, they are very limited (and) it (the study) will look at what’s being developed in what part of the district and it will take that broader view.

“Where are the potential locations to put to the best use for the community?

“It’s their chance to influence the development in the Lewiston area.”

“People have enough space to do what they want and that’s what makes it great.

“There’s no pollution. It’s a really clean and quiet area (and) we have a mix of incomes and housing styles.

“The trees and the gardens dominate and that’s just fantastic.”

Duncan is looking forward to the year ahead, with DCM embarking on a number of major projects, including the Two Wells housing development to the north of the

town, upgrading the Mallala works depot, and undertaking a community open space study in Lewiston.

This last project really reverberates with Duncan.

Having lived in the Lewiston area for many years, he says there is so much potential for the area, but that it needs to be carefully managed and plans put in place to protect the lifestyle many already enjoy.

“That’s really what we’ve got to protect if

we’re talking about protecting Lewiston,” he said. “We’ve got to protect the blocks because that’s what makes the lifestyle and brings with it the people and the community.”

DCM’s current rate review is also something Duncan is keen to work through, with the hope it will bring more equity and better efficiency to the people in the district.

people to have their say. “We’ve been pushing for them to look at all reserves in the area and see what they can be used for,” she said.

“Do we want somewhere for an on leash – off leash dog area?

“Where would we put an emergency evacuation place if we needed to?

“It would be good to get some feedback and it will be interesting to see what the community in the Lewiston area actually wants.”

Karen highlighted land near the Lewiston playground at 210 Hayman Road as just one example of open space that could be developed to incorporate other activities.

“Although the playground is there and it’s getting good usage ... do they want a barbeque there?” she asked.

“Or do they want toilets there?

“Everybody’s got different views and opinions and it will be good to see what they want.”

With four children ranging in age from just a few months old to 10, Karen says she can see the need to cater for the children and youth of the area and hopes the study will take this into consideration.

She also proposed the study could look into issues such as bus shelters in the area and somewhere for the many keen skateboarders, scooters and roller skaters to skate and could also examine how these things would be funded.

Fellow Lewiston resident and mother or three, Chrissie Scott, says the community study would be a terrific opportunity to put ideas to pen and paper.

Like Karen, Chrissie has a young family, and suggested the playground on Hayman road could be improved to incorporate a sheltered barbeque area, more parking and toilets.

Long-term Lewiston resident, councilor and DCM deputy mayor, Duncan Kennington, also is urging the public to take the opportunity to influence council decisions and have their say through the study, with the emphasis on the community, not council.

“The thing I really want to emphasise is it’s the Lewiston community study,” Duncan said.

“It’s not about what the elected members want, it’s what the community does, or doesn’t, want.

“What facilities, if any, do people want built in Lewiston in the future?

“Is it a trotting track, more forests, or a community shed?

“The idea then is if we can come up with a workable vision we can then work that into the long-term financial plan of council.”

Duncan suggested the study was aiming to create an overall, long-term vision for open space in the area, and would personally like to see some sort of meeting place incorporated into the plans.

“I would hope we would have a meeting shed, where could hold meetings or gatherings if we want to,” he said.

“Whatever we do or don’t do it would be nice to have a focal place for people to meet (as) I think that would be a useful thing.”

Having lived in the area for many years, one thing Duncan suggests residents don’t want to see is the area becoming a suburb, with shops dotting the streets and small blocks of land.

However, he admits the study could reflect the opposite.

The Lewiston Open Space Community Study is expected to take most of the year to complete, with details of how residents can actually have their voices heard yet to be finalised.

First the idea, then a job – now they’re Aussies

For the South African-born Bouwer family of Lewiston, coming to Australia has been one of the best decisions they’ve ever made.

After calling the capital of Pretoria home for many years, Pieter, and Narinda, and their two sons Alex, 11, and Rick, 7, made the move in pursuit of better job opportunities.

What they also got was a better life.

Last month the Bouwers all officially became Australian citizens after being conferred at the District Council of Mallala’s Australia Day breakfast at Dublin.

The Bouwers have lived in Lewiston for the past five years and love the safe, quiet, and relaxing lifestyle the area offers.

“Coming to Australia was just a conversation in the beginning,” Narinda said.

“We came to Australia to work; we didn’t plan on becoming Aussies.

“But we’re really happy here.

We’re glad we made the move.”

Pieter is a diesel mechanic for Cav Power while Robbie is a trained nurse working for the RDNA at Dublin.

Alex and Rick both attend Two Wells Primary School, and love the freedom living on a two-and-a-halfacre block gives them.

Alex said he enjoyed being able to ride his motorbike out the back and visiting his friends without fear.

“I like riding my motorbike and walking down the street to visit my friends,” he said.

Alex also plays rugby union for Lyndoch and is keen to give archery

a go this year, while his younger brother has his sights set on learning the art of rock climbing.

It is this freedom of choice the Bouwers love about Australia.

This and the lingo of course!

“It’s laid back and a really relaxed lifestyle,” Narinda said.

“I think I’ve got a bigger fear of a snake biting them than anything else.

“The living conditions are just so hard these days in South Africa.

“It wasn’t a safe place, when you went indoors you locked the door, you locked yourself in.”

While adapting to the lingo, and the tighter rules of Australian life, were hard in the beginning, Narinda says, she can’t even imagine not wearing her seatbelt anymore or not donning a helmet for a bike ride, as was the custom in South Africa.

Whenever they can, the family also love nothing more than getting out and about to see what their new country has to offer.

They have travelled extensively in South Australia, visiting the Eyre Peninsula and Yorke Peninsula, and relish the chance to see such diverse scenery and unique wildlife.

And the fishing’s pretty good too, according to Pieter.

“We’ve been to Queensland and up and down this coast,” he said.

“There’s so much to see (and) we like to go camping, four-wheeldriving and fishing.

“We love the outdoors here.”

“And the opportunities for doing it here are so much better,” Robbie added. “It’s a beautiful country.”

Tennis club rallies to score top award It was almost game, set, and match for the Two Wells Tennis Club a little more than 12 months ago.

With only a handful of members and less than $50 in the bank, the club was informed it was well behind on loan repayments of $7,700 to the District Council of Mallala for court resurfacing, and could be locked out of the courts if steps weren’t taken to repay the debt.

A crisis meeting was held in October 2010 and the members got to work brainstorming ways to raise the much-needed funds, garner support and recruit new members.

Their efforts in achieving this, and surpassing even their own expectations, saw the DCM award them its inaugural Community Group of the Year award at this year’s Australia Day celebration in Dublin last month.

“It was gratifying indeed, to receive such recognition after the great effort contributed by all members of the committee,” club stalwart Di Meaney said.

Under the very capable, motivating and skilful leadership of president, Lynette Seccafien, Di said the willing band of new members began fund raising, establishing senior social tennis and advertising for junior players to participate in the weekly coaching sessions, as well as increasing the number of junior teams for competition.

“The senior social tennis, run fortnightly, was well received and the junior players have doubled in numbers,” she said.

“The major fundraiser was the highly successful and popular ‘running of the balls’ event, which is on the agenda again for 2012.

“There were also, very generous donations received from local businesses and residents which have been greatly appreciated by the hard working fundraising team.

“So, not only has the amazing efforts of this committed group ‘saved the day’ for the 100-plusyear old club, and revived interest in tennis in the community once

With the sun shining and a gentle breeze blowing it was a glorious summer morning.

The event was hosted by the Dublin Cricket Club, with six local residents taking up the pledge to become Australian citizens.

DCM Community Development Officer, Lynette Seccafien, said the celebrations were an opportunity for everyone to acknowledge what they loved about our country. “(It was) a chance for us to celebrate our Australian citizenship as the bond which unites us all, whether we are Australian by birth or by choice,” she said.

“It (was) a particularly significant occasion for those residents choosing to become

were announced, with local Two Wells identity Mollie Frost named Citizen of the Year for her commitment and services to the community.

The Community Event of the Year award was presented to the Dublin History Group for its Memories of School Days book launch in May last year.

This year the DCM introduced two new award categories, Community Group of the Year and Community Project of the Year.

While no nominations were received for the community project award, the Two Wells Tennis Club took out the inaugural Community Group of the Year Award for their efforts in repaying debt and raising the profile of tennis in the town.

Next year’s Australia Day celebrations will be held in Two Wells.

Advice on snakes I was at a friend’s house having Christmas drinks when, from the corner of my eye, I saw a brown snake, approximately one meter in length.

I was able to ascertain this because my friend’s thongs were next to it.

He immediately fetched his camera but with the commotion we obviously made the snake became aware of our presence.

We went outside cautiously, just in time to see the snake slither away at break neck speed.

Seeing my friend so excited made me realise that he is very tuned in with his parcel of land in Lewiston and this snake represented a dynamic turning point in his goal of maintaining a balance in the local eco system that he wants to create within his property.

I must admit snakes are not everyone’s cup of tea. My friend said tthe last time he saw a snake on his property was about 10 years ago.

Snakes don’t want to be near humans and will avoid us as much as possible.

There are many ways to deter snakes from your immediate environment. One is to reduce their food source, i.e. rats and mice.

I recently received a newsletter from the Gawler Regional Natural Resource Centre promoting a Snake Awareness Workshop.

I thought this might be of interest to residents of our area.

The native plants that flower throughout the year provide them with a smorgasbord of food resources including nectar, seeds and insects.

During the summer month’s flocks of Purple Crowned Lorikeets visit my garden to feed on the flowering gums.

Planting natives on your property will increase the food resources for our native animals.

The more native plants we have within our area the greater the population of our native birds.

We all make a difference when we grow native plants and these Lorikeets are an example of what we, as landholders, can do to encourage native animals throughout our district.

Our own Disco set to light up After a successful year last year under the umbrella of the Gawler Blue Light Disco, Two Wells now has its own branch.

Lewiston and Districts Neighbourhood Watch sponsor the quarterly events, which attract around 130 energised young people each time they are held, and are excited by the new status of the disco.

Breaks diminish • The start of the new year has been better than the end of 2011.

With many break-ins occurring along the seaside suburbs late in the year we are glad to see the trend has not continued.

Don’t run ‘gauntlet’ • Two Wells and Mallala police have been targeting speeding and drink driving.

We have been conducting random breath tests in Two Wells, Mallala and Dublin and the results have been good.

With more than 150 tests in this period only two have recorded positive. Remember, if you drink and drive, you will be caught. If you can afford to lose your licence for at least six months, lose your car for one month and lose about $800, then run the “gauntlet”.

Risky riders • Have you see the movie “Dumb and Dumber”? (the two main actors riding a scooter along the highway?)

I was on patrol travelling south on Port Wakefield Road between Wild Horse Plains and Windsor when, in front of me I spot two lads on a small 49cc scooter. They had fishing rods sticking out the backpack of the pillion passenger.

Both were wearing helmets and all appeared to be going okay.

I followed for a short time to see what sort of control the driver had.

The scooter was doing about 45km/h and as every car passed the driver would lose control momentarily, then a large truck would pass causing more loss of control.

The driver was found to have a learner permit only and the pillion passenger wasn’t old enough to have a licence.

Keep us informed • Recently, two houses in Two Wells have been searched and cannabis plants and prepared cannabis have been located.

In both instances the occupants of the premises have been charged with offences relating to the possession and cultivation of cannabis.

Information regarding both premises came from members of the public direct to police, so if anyone has information relating to the possession or cultivation of cannabis please call your local police or Bank SA Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Too good to be true

BEWARE OF SCAMS! What is a scam? It’s a fraudulent business scheme, a swindle. Scams cheat people out of their money.

These ‘rorts’ or ‘rip-offs’ come in many forms or disguises such as emails asking you to verify your bank details; or a letter or email asking for your help in transferring money out of another country, for example the Nigerian Mail Fraud.

These scams may also take the form of a phone call with an offer too good to refuse.

Always ask the question, “If it sounds so good then why are they offering it to me?”

The best advice in dealing with these matters comes from Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading, who recommend you delete the email, destroy the letter or hang up the phone.

‘Well done’ to cadets Hard to believe it’s February already.

We seem to have come through this last spell of hot weather in not too bad shape.

It’s good to see that most of you have taken heed and cleaned up properties and gardens, well done.

Over the last two months we have had two structure (house) fires, two grass fires, four alarm calls, four motor vehicle accidents, nine car fires and a seaweed fire.

Some of our members were also called upon to help out with the recent fires at Wilmington.

We have had a couple of our Cadets step up into

TWO WELLS CFS full members, so well done to them. A couple of new volunteers have come on board, which is great, but we are still in need of more recruits.

If you are at all interested, or know someone that would be, you would be very welcome.

We train at the CFS Station opposite the Two Wells Hotel Monday nights at 7:30pm, with Cadets training every other Monday at 6:30pm.

Two Wells Cricket Club offers fun, friendly atmosphere

Two Wells Softball club members Karin Farrugia, Linda Rushton and Sally Green try a very rare T-bone. You can have yours cooked!

‘Steak’ your claim with T-Birds We all know a bit of red meat is good for you, so why not head to the Two Wells T-Birds Softball Club’s T-bone night and get your teeth into a steak?

Hosted in conjunction with Legends Rock and Roll Club, the night looks set to be a lot of fun, with raffles and door prizes, dance demonstrations and music from The Runaway Boys.

“It will be a great night of good food, great music and entertainment,” club president Linda Rushton said.

“It’s a fun, family night and will help raise funds to purchase a pitching machine.”

With the season almost nearing the business end, Linda said the club’s two teams were doing well, with the strong possibility of finals action.

The club was always keen for new members, especially juniors.

The event will be held at the Two Wells Community Centre from 6.30pm this Saturday, February 11 and has a Valentine’s Day theme of red and white, with prizes for the best dressed.

“I love the game and helping the young girls develop,” she said.

“They have improved so much since the start of the season, it’s incredible.”

The women’s competition is held on Monday nights from 6pm to 8pm, while the men’s and juniors continue in the traditional Saturday format of juniors starting at 9.30am and seniors from 1.30pm. Training is Thursday nights from 5.30pm.

As in previous years, the A grade team participates in both one-day and two-day competitions.

The club also runs the Milo In2Cricket program, which aims to teach the basics of cricket to primary school-aged kids.

Each week, Michael says, the program, run by local Francis

Pellizzari, attracts about 13 keen, would-be cricketers.

“They’re out here every week having fun and learning the game of cricket,” he said.

“Hopefully they’ll take the next step up into junior cricket because we need more juniors here.

Pony club represented at Nationals

Michelle Stirling, riding Tiffany, at the club’s Show jumping and Freshman’s day last year.

LAST year was a big year for the Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club.

Riders have represented the club all over the state, with success in all disciplines including eventing, breed shows, show jumping and hacking.

The club even had two of its riders represent the state at the Pony Club Nationals, and three riders participate as part of the section 4s

at the Royal Adelaide Show.

The club also had success with holding its own events such as a Dressage day, Gymkhana, Show jumping and Derby day, and their Christmas Hack Show.

Without the success of these events, the club would not have the facilities it does now. A big thanks to the committee members and non riding members, who have helped

with instructing riders, setting up for rallies, working bees and competition days, and of course those who helped in the canteen.

A big thank you to everyone who has helped throughout the year, as without these people the club wouldn’t be what it is today.

Stay tuned for another big year in 2012 for TWE&PC, with the first rally for the year held on February 5.

Ron, Rob honoured at gun club

Lower North Gun Club held its monthly shoot on Sunday January 29, with 40 shooters travelling from as far as Bordertown and Victor Harbor to attend a successful day of shooting.

Scores for the day were: Event 1 – 100 Target Australia Day Medley AAGrade – OverallAZupanic 147/150; 2nd D Olivero 146/150.

A Grade – 1st M Pontifex 144/150; 2nd B Cook 154/162.

B Grade – 1st L Beelitz 137/150; 2nd T O’Conner 135/150.

C grade – 1st J Tapscott 131/150.

Christmas shoot

The Christmas Shoot was held on December 18, 2011, attracting 23 shooters from six clubs across South Australia.

The club provided a Christmas lunch, including a ham donated by Rob Damin.

There were some terrific prizes supplied by the various sponsors, and a big thank you must go to all sponsors for the year.

A certificate of Life Membership, the first to be awarded at Lower North Gun Club, was presented to Ron Smith in grateful recognition of his meritorious service in establishing and supporting the Lower North Gun Club.

Ron is the founding member of the club and is responsible for allowing continual improvements and support.

The club also awarded an Inaugural Club Champion prize, to Rob Damin, for the most events won during the year. Rob was presented with a hand crafted clock made by John Byrnes, and now has his name inscribed on a shield.

The club had a new junior member shoot for the first time on Sunday.

Jack Tapscott, 11, came a commendable second in the 20-target event with a 13/20 in C Grade. His brother Angus, 15, advanced to AA Grade after consistently shooting high scores over the past year. Well done!

t’s nearly that time again!

Pre-season training starts the second week of February, with grading trials starting the first week of March.

The netball season starts for Two Wells on April 21, as the club has a bye the first round.

This year the club has a couple of new committee members, which will help with organisation and bring fresh ideas. Thank you and welcome to Stephanie Walker and Rhiannon Wendland.

Thanks also to Tanya Kent (president and treasurer), Neralie Wearn (secretary), Andrea Humphrys (junior manager) and Stacey Gameau (senior manager) for continuing on the committee again this year.

We are all looking forward to a fun, exciting and successful season in 2012. Hope to see you all soon at training!

Pre-season Training: Start - Thursday February 9, 7pm at the Two Wells Netball Courts; fitness and skills sessions – all interested players are expected to attend.

Grading Trials: Start - Thursday March 1, 7pm at the Two Wells Netball Courts. The cut-off for player registrations will be the first trial (March 1).

Subs will be due on Thursday March 1.

Junior Netball: A registration night will be held at the courts on Thursday March 22 from 5pm for all interested junior netballers. Training will commence the following Thursday night, with subs due by May 10 (week three of the season).

The club is seeking expressions of interest for junior coaches and team managers, with four teams needing parent involvement.

The teams are: B Grade (U15), C1 (U13), C2 (U13) and non-competitive D Grade (U11).

Pull on the footy boots!

Keen Two Wells footballers have been hitting the track since November last year, and now it’s time for the younger members of the club to pull on their footy boots.

Training for the U17s, coached

by Adrian Daly, begins on February 13 at 5.30pm Training for the U14s is set to being the following week, February 21 at 5.115pm, with current A grade player Daniel Hines taking on the role as coach for the first time at Two Wells.

U11s, with Mick Kotsano at the helm, and the U8s, led by Joe Cannizzaro, will both start on April 5 at 5pm.

As mentioned earlier, the senior footballers have been training since November, and wish to thank Two Wells Primary School for the use of their oval on Monday evenings for training.

Currently the seniors train Monday and Wednesday evenings, however, as the cricket season draws to a close in March, these nights will change to Tuesday and Thursdays.

A grade coach for his second season is Mark ‘Bugs’ Thomson.

B grade coach, in his first season, is past player Matthew Gameau.

John Lanzon continues as the club’s head trainer and will be supported by current player Bert Lange, who is undertaking a sports training course.

On March 31 the club will host a trial game against Broughton/ Mundoora from the Northern Areas Football Association.

The Football/Netball season officially starts on April 14, with Two Wells scheduled a bye.

First official games for the club will be on April 21.

Two Wells Cricket Club welcomes men, women and children to a…

Fun, friendly atmosphere Two Wells Cricket Club is over 100 years old, and while there is some debate as to the exact date the club was formed, most agree there was competitive cricket in the town from 1901.

Many players from the 1920s, including the likes of Cowan, Wilcox, Applebee, Secomb, Hart and Rowe still have descendants living in the district today.

These men had early success at the club, with 13-year-old Clair Hart selected in the state team and his brother Les, taking out the bowling average and association aggregate for three years running in the 1930s.

The club competed in the Lower North Cricket Association for many years, but today competes as part of the Para Districts Cricket Association, playing against teams from as far afield as Sandy Creek and Modbury to Salisbury and Craigmore.

Club president for the past three years, Michael Dimasis, has a strong connection with the sport and the club, playing cricket at Two Wells since he was a junior.

He says in the 1980s and 90s the club had reasonable success, with A grade premierships in the 1989/1990 season in Grade 2, and in the 1994/1995 season in Grade 3.

There was also a premiership in the 2002/2003 season and a grand final berth the following year, unfortunately the club came away runners-up that season.

Their most recent success was in 2008/2009, when they won the Grade 6 premiership.

Michael says during the mid-2000s the club lost 11 players out of 12 and were struggling to fill a team each week, but slowly and surely there has been a build up of interest, and now with the women’s competition involved, there is a great atmosphere, especially at home games.

“The club is a good, local, family-orientated club,” he said.

“There’s lots of young players, we have Milo cricket for those new to the sport and it’s just a great club to be a part of.”

This season saw the club open its doors to women’s cricket for the first time in its long history, and it has been a great success and addition to the club.

After playing in Gawler for many years, club secretary and women’s teams co-ordinator Leanne Pool says incorporating the women’s teams into the club has been a learning curve for everyone, but a lot of fun also.

“I’ve never had the support that we’ve got here,” Leanne said.

“It’s been brilliant.

“Every home game there’s always guys that come out and watch and support us, which I’ve never seen at any other club.

“Even at training they try to help the girls improve if they see something.

“It’s been great.”

Two Wells has two women’s teams taking part in the B grade competition and, with only a few matches to go, both are looking at playing in the finals. n Continued page 11
