Kypton Price might not be old enough Lower Light to read yet, but he’s certainly well on his way, having been a member of the Two Wells Public Library since he was Ward Belt seven months old.

Kypton’s pointers to a good book was a lovely experience for them both. “It’s a nice bonding time for us and it’s fun,” she said.

TWPL library services co-ordinator, Kimberley Hargrave, said she had helped introduce young Kypton to the free Little Big Book Club reading program, and it had been a pleasure to share in his reading journey so far.

“They have been regular borrowers and

found the program to be of great help,” she said.

“It’s a beautiful time for them and the Little Big Book Club program is something that the Two Wells Public Library is really pleased to be a part of.”

With the library launching its Amazing Read summer reading program recently, Janet said she and Kypton would be keen to be a part of it.

Make it an ‘amazing summer read’

AS the books, pens and paper of another school year are put away, the Two Wells Public Library is encouraging school aged children to pick up more books and be part of the Amazing Read summer reading program.

With some great prizes on offer, including an iPod Nano, Two Wells Public Library services co-ordinator, Kimberley Hargrave, said it was a great opportunity for students to keep up their literacy skills over the summer break and have some fun.

“We’re encouraging people from birth to teenagers to join the program so they can have some fun while keeping up their literacy levels in a time when research shows they traditionally fall,” Kimberley said.

“We are really encouraging parents and kids to come in, and if they’re

not a member it’s a great opportunity to join the library. Staff are here to provide parents and children with recommendations.”

The program requires participants to log books they borrow and read.

When their log reaches 10, it is entered into the state draw for a selection of prizes.

Each child participating also receives a prize from the library, and there are opportunities to interact with authors on the web and participate in an online blog.

The Amazing Read Summer program runs throughout the school holidays, with registrations now being taken.

We are very pleased and excited to announce the Two Wells Blue Light has been accepted as an independent branch.

During our three and a half years operating as a sub-branch of Gawler, we have conducted 14 discos with an average attendance of 153 local youths – quite an achievement for our small committee of dedicated volunteers.

We would like to thank the Gawler Blue Light for all their help during those years, and in getting us to the point where we can finally take the step of becoming an independent branch.

We also thank the wonderful volunteers who have come to help set up and supervise at our Blue Lights.

And of course, a big thank you to the youth who have come along and supported the events – we hope you enjoyed them!

As our district expands, we expect attendance numbers will also increase, so we would welcome anyone who is interested in becoming involved.

We hold four Blue Light Discos a year, so it would involve helping out for a few hours on those nights, subject to a police background clearance.

• The first Blue Light Disco for 2012 will be held on Friday, February 24, at the Two Wells Community Centre, from 7 - 9.30pm. Entry is $5 for 8 to 17 year olds.

Well-known local DJ Andrew Clifford will be providing the music and the theme will be “Black and White”, so we encourage everyone to dress up creatively and come join the fun!

NEXT MEETING: • First Neighbourhood Watch meeting for 2012 will be a joint meeting with Mallala Neighbourhood Watch, held on Tuesday, February 7 at 7.30pm in the Mallala Museum Schoolhouse.

Motorvation! a young man with ...

Sam Morgan loves cars, life and laughter

S

am Morgan is a 20-year-old, third year apprentice motor mechanic at Elizabeth South Auto Centre.

An ex-Xavier College student, he has lived his whole life in Two Wells and still calls our town home.

Living with mum, Lesley and dad, Lance, Sam loves the challenge of his job and is forever tinkering with motors.

“I like cars. I understand them, how they work,” he said.

“Finding a problem and then working out a solution is challenging.”

Sam enjoys the world of cars so much, when volunteer apprentice mechanics were needed to help out at this year’s Clipsal V8 event, he put his hand up.

Working in the Team Vodaphone pit, where the likes of superstar drivers Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup were based, was a thrill for Sam. Although he didn’t get to “touch” their cars, he certainly helped them make their way around the track.

“It was pretty cool working on the cars,” Sam said. “I did a lot of work with the tyres; cleaning, preparing, sorting, that sort of thing.

“And even though I wasn’t really able to touch the cars as such, because they’re worth more than $750,000, I got to see every part of the cars, from the engine to the inside to the tyres.”

Sam said he also volunteered for Team Monster during the Fujitsui series and relished the opportunity to meet some of Australia’s great drivers.

“It was pretty cool, being able to meet them in person,” he said.

Another experience Sam has relished this year has been his appearance as a clown in the annual Credit Union Christmas Pageant.

Sam’s years of theatre and dancing came in handy when he was asked to fill some “big” shoes.

“I was a bit of a class clown,” he said. “I always watched it on TV when I was a kid (but) being there was a lot different. It was awesome.”

Despite the warm weather and the athleticism required of a clown – something Sam says he’s not known for – the pageant was rewarding.

“Seeing the kids’ smiles, running along and seeing all these kids happy was great,” he said.

“Just watching all these kids smile because you’re the funny clown, and giving them high fives was terrific.

While Sam says being athletic is not normally his forte, there is some athleticism required for another of his pursuits – that of cheerleading.

A member of the Adelaide Eagles Cheerleading Club for the past six months, Sam was coaxed into the sport by a mate.

“It’s a bit of a change from the normal,” he said.

“And it’s hard work,

Cheering for the Adelaide Eagles gridiron team based at Thebarton oval, Sam attends a game every weekend and is hoping to participate in the State cheer competitions next year.

“Learning new things, trying new things, it’s great,” he said.

And that’s good advice for anyone – never be afraid to give something new a try.

echo 5 MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From Lewiston ward Councillor Duncan Kennington

A new place to grow and learn Two Wells Community Children’s Centre officially opened its new outdoor area on Wednesday, December 7.

The centre’s outdoor area has had an overhaul in the past few months, with shade sail erected, artificial lawn installed, bark removed and replaced, and raised garden beds with herbs, vegetables and trees established.

TWCCC director, Sarah Wormald, said after a lot of hard work fundraising and applying for grants, it was great to see the project come to fruition.

“Our aim with our outdoor project was to create an environment where the children of Two Wells have opportunities to learn about the importance of our natural en-

“This is an extension of learning for the children (and) from this project comes environmental sustainability, the fresh food cycle, healthy eating and the importance of safe, physical activity.”

Funds for the project came from a combination of community fundraising, including two sausage sizzles at Bunnings, and a $7,500 contribution from Bendigo Bank through its inaugural community grants program.

“We minimised the bark and

climbing area, installed a larger portion of lawn and an area with five raised garden beds and three semi-established trees, Mrs Wormald said.

Bendigo Bank Virginia senior branch manager Alf Sobczak attended the opening and was pleased with the improvements to the centre and the benefits for the community.

“As an organisation that thrives on giving back to the local community it was great to see the finished product and the number of local community families who will benefit,” Mr Sobczak said.

“In our minds as representatives of the Community Bank it is money very well spent.”

Summer rains bring caltrop curse

Burrs injure feet of humans and stock, damage tyres, and contaminate wool and can cause nitrate poisoning if grazed by sheep.

Plants best protection against erosion Dry, windy days are a fact of life on the Adelaide Plains. Unfortunately these weather conditions can have an impact on the land we manage and of our immediate neighbours.

I have seen many properties engulfed by dust/soil erosion from properties that could do a better job of minimising the likelihood of this happening.

I believe this is not fair. As land owners/land managers we have a duty of care to manage our land for future generations.

Soil is one of our precious natural resources. Soil erosion is a constant issue within our area, but just changing some of the land management practices that we currently use can reduce this.

The best protection against erosion is plants, be it trees, shrubs, or grasses. Plants hold the soil together and protect the soil from buffeting winds.

Two motions, of direct relevance to Lewistonites, have just passed the committee stage: The first motion was:‘That the committee, having considered item 11.9.1-Proposed Concept Plan for-210 Hayman Road, dated December 5 2011, provides in principle support to the plan for 210 Hayman Road, Lewiston.’

What this means is the long term vision statement for 210 Hayman Road will probably be formally accepted at the next Ordinary Meeting of District Council of Mallala.

Residents still have time to input into the plan, but would need to contact councillors or council promptly.

Of course it will take several years to budget to put the plan into reality.

The second motion authorised staff to develop a brief to undertake the study into the identification of community facilities and open space for the Lewiston area for further consideration by Council.’

This motion is broader and a more long term.

Lewiston has several thousand residents. We also have several slabs of land belonging to the Council.

As a council, in conjunction with the residents, we are finally going to form a vision statement for the area allowing for a long time into the future.

Again, residents should let councillors know of your needs. In addition, community consultation will occur.

• Being the nerd I am, I decided to measure the height of my highest tree recently. Not being the tree climber I used to be I used the fact the ratio of the height of an object to its shadow is the same for all objects in the garden.

Thus, I approximated the height of my sugar gum (eucalyptus cladocalyx?) to be 22 metres.

There is a superior, more accurate, and easier method, which I am currently researching, and I will hopefully have a more accurate measurement soon.

Fun 4 Kidz

Two Wells Uniting Church held its annual Fun 4 Kidz event on the town oval on Sunday, December 11.

Staged for the first time at twilight, around 200 people, primarily families and children, gathered to participate in Christmas inspired craft activities, eat a picnic tea, take a ride on a pony, have a tug-o-war and play in the sandpit.

With freshly cooked hot doughnuts and cappuccinos available, backing music by Darryl Thompson and band, plus The Jonny Wonny Show performing for the kids, it was a great family evening.

Organiser Rae Wilson said the event was

in its third year and was steadily growing, with the team behind the concept keen to keep on improving the occasion.

“I was really happy with the night,” Rae said. “The families seemed to enjoy it and the children enjoyed it, everyone seemed really happy.

“It was a lovely night for the community.”

Local children dressed as angels and wise men, and took part in a re-enactment of the Christmas story, which was followed by the singing of carols.

The winners of the colouring-in and bestdressed competitions were also announced during the night.

Actively stepping out brings recognition

Two Wells Stepping Stones’ Active After School program has been nominated for a Super Site award.

The centre was presented with a nomination certificate on December 8, and has been selected from around 20 schools from the Barossa region.

Run as part of the Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) service, coordinator Sally Plane said around 30 students had taken part in the program, which aimed to provide a positive experience of, and introduction to, sport.

“It’s been really rewarding to get

these kids into sports and watch them grow,” Sally said.

“They’ve enjoyed it a lot and have had a lot of fun.”

Throughout the year students took part in soccer, yoga, dance, martial arts, volleyball, netball and softball as part of the program.

Sally said the program was a great way for the community to also be involved, with specialised groups demonstrating skills to students and encouraging them to keep being active.

Winners will be announced before the end of the year.

Upgrade brings more jobs and boost to area

L

ocal abattoir Prime Valley Pastoral (PVP) has spent $1 million upgrading its facility and was recently awarded organic certification.

Prime Valley Pastoral managing director, Shaun Frederick, says the company’s improvements – when completed at the end of the year – will see the facility increase its killing capacity by more than 35 percent and enable a broader range of services to be offered, including skin-on and skin-off goat processing.

Mr Frederick says after buying the facility in 2005, significant developments and expansion has occurred at the property, with lots of exciting changes taking place.

“Prime Valley Pastoral is con-

tinually growing and improving (and) this can only benefit the area,” Mr Frederick said.

“The organic certification allows us to process organically grown animals.

“We can now go through that process from paddock to the plate in an organically certified way.”

While the organic certification has meant the company has had to adhere to strict procedures, Mr Frederick says it has been pleasing to have the high standards of PVP recognised.

“From our perspective there’s a lot of logistics and protocols to be followed,” he said.

“We have to segregate the animals, look at how they are handled and then how they are processed.

“They have got their own special paddocks and their own organically certified foods.

“There’s a lot of documentation and things we needed to adhere to before we were organically certified (and) we are excited and proud to be able to hold up our slaughtering practices to the scrutiny of the organic certification process.”

The facility is also Halal certi-

fied, which means animals are processed according to Islamic rituals.

Mr Frederick said Halal certification was still in its infancy but, like organic certification, was a growth market.

“We process a lot of animals that are going interstate,” he said.

“It’s a market we are trying to cater for (and) like the organics, it is very tightly monitored.”

Prime Valley Pastoral employs about 40 people and processes all stock, including cattle, lambs, goats and sheep.

With the new expansion and upgrade, Mr Frederick said he hoped the facility would increase its processing capacity from around 700 small stock a day to 1000, and create a further 10 to 15 jobs.

Concert fun

The Two Wells Community Children’s Centre held its annual Christmas concert on December 7, with families from kindy and childcare enjoying a sausage sizzle, and singing, capped off with a visit from Santa.

TWCCC director Sarah Wormald said the event was a great way to celebrate the end of the year and was pleased so many families supported the night.

“It was a great celebration of the year we have completed and an opportunity for families to come along, enjoy the concert and to relax on the oval with a sausage sizzle,” she said.

“It was lovely to see the joy on the children’s faces when Santa arrived and gave out gifts.

“Lots of children dressed up for the occasion (and) it really was a night for the families to enjoy.”

Families Learning and Growing (FLAG) held its annual Christmas party on the morning of Tuesday 13th December.

Christmas crafts were aplenty with colouring in cards, shoebox diorama of a Christmas scene and letters to Santa.

We had a special visit from Santa and with much excitement each child had a turn to receive their present as Santa pulled one with their name from his sack.

A great time was had by all as wrapping paper went flying with lots of little voices saying “Can I play with it now?”, while parents clicked away with cameras.

Sharing our last morning tea for the year we all left feeling rather full after all the delicious cakes and biscuits people had made.

FLAG will resume next year on Tuesday 31st January 2012.

Street comes alive with festive ...

This year’s Two Wells Street Parade had many saying it was the best yet, with two big bands entertaining, lots of street stalls and colourful floats making for a great night.

While the warm weather kept the skate park boys at the fruit salad and ice-cream stall busy, it meant hundreds of locals, visitors and members of the wider community turned out to support the event.

Children and parents alike came dressed in their Christmas gear, with decorated bikes, scooters and prams cruising the street and giving it a festive cheer.

Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) vicepresident Bev Smith-Trimm said the parade was a terrific night for the community and was pleased so many had come along to enjoy it.

“For me the highlight was to walk along the street and see so many people just having a really good time,” she said.

“Everybody was saying it was great and they’ll be back again next year. It turned out to be a really beaut night.”

New to the parade this year was the inclusion of two big bands, which gave the event more impact Bev said.

“It certainly made for a lot more vibrant parade,” she said.

“Once the first band had gone through things were really quiet but having the two bands there, it was a sound build up to having the prince and princess and then Father Christmas. It was lovely.”

Also new to the event was the Scout’s “Come and Try” night and trail, and the CFS crash simulation exercise.

Both these additions had been well received, Bev said, and she hoped the organisations had managed to secure some much-needed new members.

Congratulations to all those who participated and helped make the night such a success.

ae and Bain Corston are iconic Two Wells residents. They were one of the first faces of each weekday many of our youngest residents saw year after year, and Rae in particular, was a regular face at community events and working bees, who worked hard to help countless people in different ways.

And it all started with one small blue bus.

Locals since the mid-1970s, Rae and Bain have built a business most would recognise and few who couldn’t say they hadn’t used.

Corston buses and coaches have been ferrying local children to and from school for years, with countless others being driven all over the state for weddings, sports competitions, sightseeing tours, business trips, even funerals.

Before establishing Corstons Coaches, Bain worked the family trucking business, based at Virginia, with his brothers for many years.

He carted grain back when it was counted in bags, hay when it was sheaved, and of course stock of all kinds.

Bain grew up in Virginia and left school at 15 to help with the trucking.

“I was driving a truck and trailer before I even had a licence,” he chuckled. “Following my Dad down to the abattoir and back.

“We also used to cart the sheep into the show for the shearing competitions.

“We’d take the woolly sheep in and then take the shorn ones out again.”

Rae grew up a “city slicker”, calling the suburbs of Burnside and Norwood home until she married Bain in 1964.

They have four children, Julie, Robyn, Lynette and Geoff.

The couple lived the first 14 years of their marriage in Virginia before moving to Two Wells in 1977.

In 1978 Bain wound down his involvement in the trucking business and went to work at the TNT rail depot for a few years before coming back to drive the buses.

The couple took over the school bus run in Two Wells from Herb Bobridge in 1982.

“They used to have all private bus services then,” Bain said. “Herb backed us all the way,” Rae added.

“He was a gem, he was there all the time and sold us the business interest free, something very few people do.”

With a full bus load of school kids, around 48, it was a hectic cycle, with the school run split into two to cater for the large number of children.

“We always had two runs,” Rae said. “The kids went early one term and late the next.”

The early run saw children board the bus from 7.45am, with the second run picking up kids about 8.25am.

“This was swapped each term so the same families didn’t have to get up so early all the time,” Rae said. “They got to have a bit of a sleep in.

“We’d do one trip, come into the school and drop the kids off and then go back out again.”

In the afternoon the bus would also do two short runs.

Bain and Rae shared the driving duties to start with but when they bought their first coach in 1984 Rae became the primary school bus driver.

For 25 years it was a time she relished, one where all the kids felt like her own.

Even today Rae is often caught in the street or at the shops by someone she used to take to school on the bus.

You’ll have to forgive her if it takes a moment or two to put a name to the face – there have been more than a few faces over the two decades she was at the wheel.

“In the early days I loved it,” she said.

“The families were lovely and they were like ‘my’ kids. I saw them every day and they felt like part of my family.

“When those kids graduated in Year 7, I’d go up and take photos of them.”

But times have changed and so too have family compositions, student behaviour and expectations.

Rae stopped driving the school bus in 2007, saying the manner of some children made her job difficult.

“The whole attitude of the children is different these days,” she said. “And the attitude of

the parents is different, and that’s what really made me give it up. In those early days you rarely growled, you dropped back a gear and they knew. In the early days I’d buy them all an ice-cream at the end of the term.”

Bain agreed times have changed and home environments have changed too.

“Things are different now,” he said. “A lot of kids don’t come from here and just don’t have the discipline at home.

“Parents disciplined their children, and they took notice.

Nowadays things are different, it’s all changed.”

The business officially became Corston Coaches in the mid 1980s, and over the years has taken thousands of people on trips all over the state, for bowls, netball, football, anniversaries, corporate events, school trips, even cruise ship tours when they came ashore.

The local bowls club helped get Corstons started on their coach trips.

“They would travel to events where they would play one day and tour the next,” Bain said.

And with the addition of their first airconditioned bus in the late 1980s, a 49-seater, which meant more comfort for their customers,

“

Bain said the business went from strength to strength.

“We started with just one and have had as many as 16 buses,” he laughed. “Now we’ve got nine big ones and two mini buses.”

The first coach tour for Corstons was to the Grampians in 1990, the start of what was to become many tours across the state, with trips

“They just stripped off, it was a laugh.”

“You name it we’ve done it,” Rae added.

“We’ve cleaned up ‘French letters’ and vomit, found underpants, rotten food and jewellry. But it’s the people we meet and the places we go we enjoy the most.

“The diversity of it is what we love.”

While working hard to establish their bus and charter business, Rae also made time to volunteer to various groups and organisations including the community centre, where she was a member of the Melodrama Group from its inception, and the tennis club, calisthenics club, hockey club, and school council, just to name a few.

When living in Virginia Rae drove the short distance to Two Wells to bring her kids to kindy, and was then behind the push for a kindergarten at Virginia.

It is this connection with kids that saw Rae really enjoy her role as “future generation transporter”, a connection she says has its highs and lows.

“I lost a few kids along the way,” she said.

“That was hard, especially as I saw them most days of the week (and) the friendships with the kids is what I loved.

“It was great – and the family that stands out the most is the Pietris family. “They were a beautiful Greek family, such lovely, beautiful kids.

“I remember knitting a jumper when the youngest was born, the kids were so excited to tell me it was a boy. They gave us a mandarin tree and it didn’t do anything for a few years and then one year it just went berserk and we had heaps of mandarins.”

In more recent years Rae has taken tour groups to New Zealand and Norfolk Island, where many laughs, and mishaps were had.

She says these were great trips, with terrific people and fantastic scenery giving her

And along the way passengers enjoyed fresh goodies, home-baked by Rae, for morning tea.

“I’ve been most places in SA but I haven’t been higher than Alice Springs or over the boarder into WA,” Bain said.

As you can imagine, Bain and Rae have been privy to many interesting people and funny moments.

They probably have a tale to tell about almost anything and seem to know everyone.

“I remember doing a footy trip where the players were all naked,” Bain laughed.

Rae and Bain have 10 grandchildren and love spending time with them all.

While retirement isn’t on the cards yet, says Bain with a laugh, he has taken a step back in the past few years.

Corstons Coaches employs three full-time drivers with a few casuals on hand, plus office staff.

So if you see Rae in the street with a puzzled expression on her face and being hugged by a 20-something-year-old; wave and smile and nod – it’s just Mrs Corston going back in time a few years.

Our concert cuties On a lovely summer evening, more than 200 people sat on picnic rugs or watched from camping chairs as Two Wells Primary School presented its annual School Concert on Tuesday December 6.

The audience was treated to an extensive range of class, group and individual performances, with Christmas colours, hats and costumes creating a sea of red, white and green and helping set a festive mood.

TWPS deputy principal Lynda Fitzpatrick-Brown said holding the concert outdoors had been a great success with feedback from parents and the wider community being very positive.

“It was a much more relaxed and informal atmosphere,” Lynda said.

“Because of the weather everyone was able to sit on the lawn and have a picnic.

“It was just lovely to see so many gathered and enjoying the talents of the students.

“And not just mums and dads but also grandparents, aunties, uncles and community members.”

The appreciative crowd was shown everything from boot-scooting youngsters to Bollywood dancing, to instrumental duos and group singing.

“It was most impressive to see those students who volunteered to sing and dance,” Lynda said.

“We do have some wonderful talent in the school and it was a good display of some of the things the kids had learnt throughout the year as well as their own talent.”

Running for fun Two Wells Primary School’s inaugural fun run has raised almost $3000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Held on November 29, students were sponsored to run either a 1km or 1.5km course around the school grounds and adjacent reserve.

Year 5 students Kobe Boyd, David Oakley, Luke Barnett, Michael McFarlane and Brayden Doherty came up with the idea and worked hard to research, publicise and co-ordinate the run.

“I used to run in them at my old school and thought it would be a good idea,” Luke said.

“It was a lot of organising but it was also a lot of fun.”

TWPS teacher/librarian, Angela Heuzenroeder helped oversee the fun run team and said it was a tremendous effort by the young students.

“The boys did a great job, and they used their computing skills very effectively,” she said.

“They also learnt a great deal about all the

Some of the things the group had to do were - find out what Leukaemia is and contact the Foundation for permission to raise funds; set the date, and write letters to the principal, staff and governing council asking permission to organise the event; spread publicity through the school by creating and pinning up posters, write an article for the newsletter; devise entry forms and sponsorship forms; mark out and measure the course, and draw maps; speak to the school’s bursar about how the money would be collected; and co-ordinate the day.

After being first postponed due to rain and then again because of hot weather, Ms Heuzenroeder said everyone really enjoyed the event and were keen to make it an annual event.

The Fun Run Team would like to thank everybody that donated money to the school Fun Run. We really appreciate the donations as the money will go to a good cause.

Parham concert full of magic Port Parham-based Magic Moments Dance Group held its annual concert at the local Sports and Social Club on November 26. About 100 people enjoyed a lovely meal before settling in to watch the group perform four numbers.

Led by dance teacher Leslee Forst, the group consists of local ladies Val Coady, Raelene Schwerdt, Helen Blackmore and Karen Mylius.

During the nightAaron Gerrard, on drums, and youngsters Tim Forst, and Jayden, Troy and Eboney Kenyon, made an appearance as special guests.

During costume changes, Aaron entertained as a magician, and Legends Rock ‘n’ Roll Club members took to the dance floor.

With their catchy tunes keeping the crowd keen for more, the girls topped off a year of hard work with their rendition of Big Spender.

It was a bittersweet night for the remaining four members of the Rotary Club of Two Wells (RCTW) on Friday December 2, as they handed in the club’s charter.

RCTW president, Robin Trevilyan said nearly 50 people gathered for the club’s final dinner at the Two Wells Bowling Club, with a lot of memories flooding the room during the proceedings.

“We were well represented by the clubs that came along to support us,” Robin said.

“It was a great night (but) it was a bittersweet night as we handed in our charter.”

Former RCTW members, as well as representatives from the Rotary Clubs of Elizabeth, Playford, Salisbury, and Munno Para enjoyed a three-course meal, lively conversation and an “off the cuff” speech by inaugural president Les Williams. Locals Bet Williams and Jeanette Sharpe, along with final RCTW member Christine Lindeblad were presented with Paul Harris Fellowship awards in honor of their long service, commitment to the ideals of Rotary, and community contribution.

“It was great to see those three ladies recognised,” Robin said.

“And there were also some reflections from each of the four members, where they said something about what Rotary meant to them.

“That was really special.”

Another highlight of the evening, Robin said, was when long-time supporter and mentor of the club, Dennis Underwood, read out a poem he had written about the famed Two Wells Rotary path that leads to the restored wells.

A lesson in water safety

Two Wells Primary School middle primary students had a lesson in water safety last month when Surf Lifesaving SA visited the school.

Promoting the Beach to Bush safety program, SLSA first aid training manager, Gareth Morgan, said he had spent two weeks visiting schools in the Barossa and Gawler region, and with summer upon us it was an opportune time to help raise awareness and understanding of water safety.

“Basically I’m helping them understand about being safe in an aquatic environment,” Mr Morgan said.

“This program makes sure that children are aware of the dangers around water.

“It’s not just the beach they have to think about, it’s also lakes, rivers, dams and swimming pools, anywhere there’s water.”

As part of the session students watched a video highlighting the dangers of water and discussed life saving skills.

been informative and the students were interested in learning about how to stay safe around water.

“The video looked at things like what to do if you’re in a rip, swimming between the flags, and there was also a little bit on pool safety,” she said.

“The kids have been involved and it’s been beneficial for them.

“They don’t go to the beach very often but it’s important to know what to do when they do.”

Year 5 student Tenelle Simons enjoyed the water safety presentation and was part of the demonstration.

“It was good,” she said.

“I learnt a lot, like always swim between the flags.”

After seven years in primary school, almost 40 Two Wells Primary School students graduated on Thursday December 15.

With family and friends gathering at the Community Centre to celebrate, the excited class of 2011 enjoyed a formal presentation followed by dinner and a disco.

Thomas Stefferson was awarded the Neville Sharpe Award for Out-

standing Contribution to the School Community, with Natisha Eastman named the year’s top academic and presented with the Carolyn Hart Award.

Noah Barnett won the Noel Oakley Outstanding Achievement in Sport Award and Alannah Williams the Dean Anderson All-rounder Award for her contributions to sport, academia and the community.

Rams need more juniors THE Virginia Rams are on the charge for recruits for the coming 2012 season, but it’s not the big name A graders they are particularly pursuing. The club, under the leadership of new club president, Barry Flitter, has launched a junior recruitment drive to bolster the stocks of young kids wanting a kick next year.

Mr Flitter said it was an area Virginia had struggled with in recent seasons but he hoped the recruiting drive, aimed at the town and surrounding suburbs, which are gradually expanding, might yield some extra numbers for season 2012.

“We’re putting an invitation out for all the kids out there to come and give footy a go.”

Recent changes at the club include the appointment of new vice presi-

dent, Len Masson, while Len’s wife, Lisa, took on the role as secretary.

As expected, Greg Phillips retained the A grade coaching job, supported by Dennis Eaton as assistant.

The club announced it has signed former Port Adelaide Magpies junior, Marek Sajewicz, who played at Eudunda/ Robertstown last season.

Chris Ewen remains coach of the Reserves, while Steve Warren was appointed the new leader of the Under 17s.

The club was in negotiations regarding the appointment of the Under 14’s coach.

“We are still looking

for someone to take on the under 11s role,” Mr Masson said.

Mr Masson’s job as vice president will be primarily assisting Mr Flitter throughout the year, although he indicated he was willing to help out where needed.

“I have also taken on the bar manager role at the club this year,” he said.

He echoed the thoughts of Mr Flitter.

“We’re trying to get the community involved,” Mr Masson said.

“We’re rying to get new people in the community to realise what the Virginia Football Club is about and what we’re about is family.”
