South Australia’s Governor, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce and his wife, Liz, were his special guests when he arrived in Two Wells with the recent Christmas parade.

n THE smiles of Mia Liddy and Samuel Cannizzaro reflect the great time they had at the Two Wells Christmas parade on Friday, December 10. The parade, organised by the Two Wells Regional Action Team, attracted about 2,500 people and was well supported by 28 businesses and community groups.

Christmas cheer alive in Two Wells Two Wells residents enjoyed another successful Christmas parade last Friday night presented by Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT).

Special guest South Australian Governor, Kevin Scarce and his wife, Liz were welcomed by parade organisers, District Council of Mallala staff and councillors before Mr Scarce addressed the large 2,500 plus crowd of parade-goers.

About 28 businesses and community groups paraded down the main street with Father Christmas at the end in a fishing boat.

The popular Redbacks band of Tea Tree Gully returned to lead the walk, before performing a concert outside the library.

Their musical entertainment is still being talked about.

TWRAT thanked community members for making the evening another great success for young and old.

Trish Hardiman of the Two Wells Snack Bar was awarded a trophy for best decorated business, presented by Michael Higginbotham from Higginbotham Homes.

Two Wells Scouts won best community float while Noah’s Crossing Veterinary Clinic was awarded best business float.

The jumping castle provided entertainment for the children, while rock ‘n’ roll dancers showed off their skills at the party.

Smith-Trim said it was a wonderful night and was enjoyed by everyone who attended, including the special guests.

“Mr and Mrs Scarce were delighted to visit our little town and share in our celebrations,” she said.

“Some new entries in the parade added their special touches and we congratulate Noah’s Crossing Vet Clinic (best business entry) and the Two Wells Scouts (best community group entry) on their success and hope they enjoy the trophies they won,” she said.

Bev said the children loved the Dalmatian Bouncing Castle again, and TWRAT would continue this service despite a loss in profit.

“TWRAT will continue to pay the cost of hiring this attraction even

though it is always run at a loss by the Team,” she said.

There was also more reason to celebrate, with the crowd on their best behaviour.

“Of special note is the praise from the South Australian Police for the behaviour of the Crowd. Congratulations everyone,” Bev said.

TWRAT would like to thank the District Council of Mallala for their financial and practical help.

“Also special thanks to the businesses in Two Wells who donated money and/or goods which helped to make the night such a success,” Bev said.

Amazed at voting tactics of councillors

I’ve sat in the gallery at some of the District Council of Lower Light Mallala meetings a few times recently – and have to say how amazed I am at the orchestrated voting pattern and delaying Ward Belt tactics used by one group of councillors.

else. The rest of the councillors thankfully are open and transparent people with great regard for their voters’ concerns and do their best to help and sort out problems.

I would suggest these very insular councillors inwardly digest this fact, learn from their colleagues and prove they might actually have the concerns and interests of others at heart.

Opportunity lost

REGARDING the proposed playground on the corner of Hayman and Pedrick roads in Lewiston.

We have about 700 children in the area aged under 14 and 3,500 adults. At present there are no facilities in our local area for our children to play.

In the recent edition of the Echo, it was suggested as “most homes were on 2.5 acres, the children’s backyards are their playgrounds.” How fanciful.

Should horse and dog owners only exercise them on their own properties? Not using the roads and other designated areas? The site proposed is adjacent to many acres of wetlands, walking and riding trails, for both horse and bikes.

With the cost of daycare about $90 per day, many grandparents such as myself are being asked to

At last, public transport for Angle Vale

Public transport is now operating in Angle Vale.

The new service started on Monday, December 20.

It is a combination of fixed routes and flexible response in an attempt to maximise accessibility for residents.

The service is the result of a campaign led by the Member for Light, Tony Piccolo, in response to calls for better services from the Angle Vale community.

Mr Piccolo said the service is a hybrid of the successful Gawler Dial-A-Ride model which has increased patronage almost fourfold in just over the five years it has been operating.

“The new service will help many families in the local area,” said Mr Piccolo.

Mr Piccolo said he had been lobbying for public transport services for more than four years.

He has worked closely with the local community to ensure it is both accessible and financially sustainable.

“The previous public transport service started about 10 years ago and only lasted six months because it did not adopt a sustainable model,” Mr Piccolo said.

“The new service will give local residents an opportunity to establish the demand for public transport,” Mr Piccolo said.

“Public transport services have failed in many areas that have previously relied on the motor vehicle as often people are reluctant to change their patterns of behaviour.”

“I hope local residents support this service and demonstrate to the government that the investment warrants it.”

Mr Piccolo said the service had received overall support from the community in surveys he had undertaken over the past four years.

“While I acknowledge that the service will not meet the need of every resident, it is a good start and could provide a foundation for improved services as the town grows,” Mr Piccolo said.

The service will be operated by Link SA under a contract with the Public Transport Division (PTD) of the Department of Transport.

Mr Piccolo acknowledged the contribution made by staff from the PTD in getting the service to fruition.

This site could be transformed into a very good community meeting place. About 25 years ago, I built several houses in this area.

People who bought and sold here often had the same reason – there was nowhere for their kids to play and 10–15km to the nearest shop to buy bread, milk and the paper. A community general store, a place for adults to have a coffee, or a chat while their children play could be ideal.

Lewiston residents should think very carefully about rejecting the proposal, as funding sometimes only is available for a short while.

It may be a long time before we get another opportunity.

CFS thanks

I must express my sincere gratitude to the CFS – in particular Jamie and Matthew – who called on me on the night of Wednesday, December 8.

Despite being in the overwhelming position of making sandbags and building levees for those who were in danger of having their homes flooded, they knocked on my door to check on my welfare.

When I answered the door and saw the CFS caps my first thought was they had come to advise me to evacuate.

Imagine my joy when they said they had come to check on me. Bright spark me immediately responded that I wasn’t perturbed, but they still left me with the CFS phone number should I need to contact them.

On Thursday, I was busily taking photos of my road under water when who should come along, but my saviours.

Lunatic me said, “... and you were concerned about me.

Here I am wandering through the water and taking photos.”

On reflection, perhaps it wasn’t the best greeting but, wonderful chaps that they are, they completely accepted my weird sense of humour.

Once again, many thanks chaps and, on behalf of all who helped, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

You are definitely going to deserve a really long rest after all this settles down.

Keep up the good work. We must also remember that all these people have volunteered their time and, for many, would have taken time off their jobs to help us out of this predicament.

I must also thank the kind souls who requested that the guys check on me.

Literacy award –

Rotarian Christine Lindeblad of the Rotary Club of Two Wells presented the inaugural Rotary Year 5 Excellence in Literacy Award to Jade Murphy at the Two Wells Primary School on Friday, December 10.

Devon and Caroline engaged Devon Hardiman of Two Wells and Carloline Wohlfeil recently announced their engagement.

Devon, who had been away for four months for work in the army, popped the question on

his return at the start of December.

Caroline’s parents are Clinton and Leanne Wohlfeil,

of Karoonda, and Devon’s are James and Patricia Hardiman, of Two Wells.

Steve our ‘Mr Positive’

STEVE Cummins with his magic pal, Merlin.

Life on the Plains has been far from plain for Two Wells’community helper, Steve Cummins.

Even though he describes himself as just an average guy helping out where he can,Steve has a positive impact on the life of many community members.

He’s always willing to lend his time and energy to help the local and wider communities.

Within the 30 years Steve has spent in the district, he has been involved with the scouts, primary school parent council, Uniting Church, Trees for Life and Adelaide Plains road safety group.

After starting out as a parent helper at the scouts about 14 years ago, Steve is now an enthusiastic leader.

He also works tirelessly to raise money for the organisation.

Steve and wife, Maxine, willingly work as gate and scoreboard attendants at the local football and netball games for the benefit of the local children and their scouting endeavours.

They can also be found at the oval on Sunday mornings collecting

Two Wells RSL will create a tourism magnet for the town:

Sights on a Leopard A leopard tank will be rolling into Two Wells by the middle of next year after a bid to obtain one of 30 in Australia was successful.

Two Wells RSL is the smallest of five clubs in South Australia to secure one of the historic war tanks.

An application from club secretary, John Allen, was submitted three years ago and Two Wells RSL members were very excited by the news of its success last week.

“For an RSL this small to get granted one is a really big deal,” president Tony Flaherty said.

Also to benefit from the tanks, which are expected to be great draw cards for visitors, will be RSL clubs in Marion, Port Augusta, Mount Gambier and Echunga.

Mr Flaherty said the club’s collaboration with the community could have swayed the application.

“We are very much a com-

munity RSL and I think the panel recognised this in our application,” he said.

“This is a wonderful historic item and will be a great tourist attraction,” he said.

“It will be a big bonus for the whole district.”

Mr Allen said he noticed an opportunity to apply for the tank online in 2007.

“I got a letter acknowledging the application and heard we were short listed, but hadn’t heard anything for a while,” he said.

“The tank should be arriving by

the middle of next year following public consultation,” he said.

“It’s my understanding that many clubs applied, so it’s quite an honour to be granted this great piece of history,” he said.

The tanks are 9.2 metres long, 3.37 metres wide and 2.62 metres high, weighing 42 tonnes.

The tanks were made in Germany and arrived in Australia in 1976. They were officially withdrawn from service in July 2007.

It is expected to be located near the war memorial, but public consultation will take place to determine the best location for the tank.

“It’s not everyday a town can be enhanced by this kind of attraction,” Mr Flaherty said.

Information regarding the tank was acknowledged through Federal member for Wakefield, Nick Champion.

He is currently the bus driver for Two Wells Primary School and enjoys the morning and afternoon shifts to and from Lower Light.

He has held this role for nearly 14 years and said it was a great way to keep up-to-date with the district.

His constant road presence has lead Steve to become a member of Adelaide Plains Road Safety Committee since its inception.

He said he enjoyed contributing to the protection of the district’s road users.

“As a bus driver, I see a lot of the traffic hazards on our roads, so I try to address problem areas through the committee,” he said.

Steve, who has one adult son – and Maxine, with three grown up sons – say they both enjoy giving back to

the community now they have time.

“Now our children are grown up, it’s our opportunity to give back,” Maxine said.

Steve said he particularly enjoyed giving back to Two Wells Primary School, as it’s where his son completed primary school.

Twice every month, the generous couple can be found volunteering for ‘Fred’s Van’– a van dedicated to serving food and drinks to homeless people in the northern suburbs.

While they said it was a very eye-opening experience, it was also very rewarding.

“We serve pasta, hotdogs, soups, spaghetti, sandwiches, and help with preparing and serving,” Maxine said.

Another role is ensuring the Two Wells and Districts Echos get delivered every month, with Steve and Maxine preparing the newspapers and delivery routes for all the scouting families.

“We just help out where we can and love every minute of it,” Steve said. “We can (help) because we’ve got the time now and it’s a great community to be involved with here in Two Wells,” he said.

They watched in shock

Flood waters reached Martin and Julie Hart’s back porch on the Light River. Brothers Bryce and Jacob kept watch with Lizzy the dog in hope the water would stop there.

as floods swamped homes

repairs continue on farm fencing, roads and vegetable crops Victims of December’s flood faced an unpleasant cleanup following the Light River’s biggest overflow since 1983, according to Two Wells CFS. Monitoring of the Light, Gawler and Wakefield Rivers continued on Wednesday and Thursday, December 8 and 9 following the record-breaking storm on Tuesday night.

The rising levels of Light River forced the closure of the railway line just north of Mallala, while the Two Wells–Mallala road remained closed to traffic on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday morning, a Korunye livestock feedlot near the Light River was swamped with water, as CFS and SES crews attempted to sandbag the house before the area became too dangerous.

Unfortunately for owners, Alena Crosby and Gary Jones, the sandbagging wasn’t enough to protect the house with the level rising as the day wore on.

Several other houses underwent precautionary sandbagging, with emergency services regularly checking up on residents.

Di Allpike appreciated the courtesy call from CFS members.

“A big thank you to Two Wells CFS who came out to check on me Wednesday night.”

“It was very nice of them indeed, I am extremely grateful,” Di said.

Port Wakefield Highway closed several times on Wednesday night, causing a bank up of traffic at the Two Wells turnoff.

Residents near the Light River said flooding over the two day period was the worst they had seen in the area.

Lower Light farmer and Adelaide Plains Football League president, Brad Busch, said the floods had also damaged his barley crops.

“We’ve had floods before – but not like this one. There’s one paddock that’s about 30 acres probably two feet deep at the moment, so no point worrying about any of that,” he said.

Light River resident Jacob Hart said he had never seen the river stay at such a high level for so long.

“It’s never stayed up that high for so long – it’s been about 20 hours,” he said.

He said the water was gushing to sections of the plains it had not reached before.

The tide on the coast, which came in at 5.30am on Thursday morning and was a 2.6m tide, was also worrying for residents.

Peaking tides create an obstruction for outgoing flood water from the Light River, pushing floodwater elsewhere.

However, by Thursday night the river began to drop and most main roads were accessible by Friday morning.

CFS crews across the district worked tirelessly with police and other volunteers.

There were also many Mallala council staff involved with dealing with the flood.

Infrastructure and Engineering services manager, John Tillack, was operating an emergency control system.

CEO, Charles Mansueto, said the majority of flood damage in the council district around the Mallala–Two Wells road.

Fencing and crops fared the most damage, with only a few reports of property damage.

Mallala–Two Wells road (maintained by the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure) sustained a small amount of damage, while several unsealed roads will also require repairs.

Up to 20 vegetable growing businesses in the Buckland Park area were severely affected by the floods.

GrowSA CEO, Mike Redmond, said some of these growers would lose 90 per cent of their crops.

“Isolated and localised flooding of greenhouses has severely impacted these businesses,” he said.

Most of the damaged crops were capsicum and cucumber, with some potato crops also suffering flood damage.

Unsung heroes saved so much Country Fire Service (CFS) and State Emergency Service (SES) crews were the heroes of recent flood emergencies, with several households requiring assistance.

Volunteer members worked around the clock for four days ensuring the safety of local people and their properties.

Backup crews assisted on the Light River from as far away as Onkaparinga, Yorke valley, Gumeracha and Bundaleer.

Philip Earl of Two Wells CFS said the local crews were exceptional in the circumstances.

The plight began on Tuesday night, December 7, when local crews were called to Greenock to assist with floods.

They arrived back early Wednesday morning and responded to flood calls locally by 6am.

Mr Earl said crews worked tirelessly

until Friday night, when the major threat had diminished.

“Some guys did some long stretches with minimal sleep,” he said.

“We’ve got a good working relationship with the SES, who were over stretched for resources and man power.”

“The biggest motivation for everyone was to help other people out,” Mr Earl said.

The salvation army served food for more than 100 crew members on Wednesday and Thursday, while the local Red Cross also assisted with meals.

“Thanks to all the local crews and members of the public,” Mr Earl said.

There has been no rest for the crews, with call outs continuing with fires and car accidents. Mr Earl said new members were always welcome.

Creepy time at the Two Wells library A scary experience awaits those children daring to read this summer school holidays. Two Wells public library will join libraries from Broome to Hobart in celebrating everything scary and creepy in children’s literature.

This year’s Scare Up a Good Book!

Summer Reading Club Program began on Thursday, December 2.

All participants receive a pack which includes the important reading log, activities and craft ideas.

All young readers who finish the program by reading 10 books will go into the draw to win the local and state draw in February 2011.

“The summer reading club extends across summer to promote reading and reading-related activities to children aged 5–16 via their local library,” Two Wells library manager, Kimberley Hargrave said.

She said public libraries are essential to the national effort to improve literacy skills in the community.

“The program is a highlight for our younger library users and their parents and caregivers, at a time when literacy activities such as reading are low,” she said.

Record funding for local community infrastructure Two Wells Public Library will receive $58,000 towards improving the structure and adding to the heritage building’s life span.

Work will include repairing interior and exterior cracking, re-pointing stone and brickwork, repainting exterior and interior timber to ensure continued use of the facility by the community.

Federal Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion, announced the investment of more than $980,000 in 16 community infrastructure projects through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

“These new projects will benefit the local community but are also expected

to support more than 40 jobs in the Wakefield electorate,” Mr Champion said.

“Through the Australian Government working in partnership with the District Council of Mallala, we are building a better future for the community,” he said.

Each project has been proposed by the respective local council to meet the individual needs of their local community.

Funding has been allocated to councils according to population, location and growth indicators, with councils submitting project proposals based on their notional allocation.

Residents of Two Wells have been showing off the best of the district to some foreign friends through a special friendship club.

The local Friendship Force group hosted members from the USA for one week during November.

President and Two Wells resident, Glenys Szarmanski, said the group enjoyed touring the district and visiting significant industries.

A one day tour of the Two Wells area included a tour of the d’vineripe greenhouses and Bevan Park dairy farm.

The local friendship hosts opened their homes to the visitors from America, giving them a true understanding of Australia.

This can develop through the sharing of meals, conversation and the routines of daily life.

Friendship Force International (FFI) connects people from different countries at the

personal level all over the world.

Glenys said she experienced an adventure just recently during a seven week tour.

“I have just returned from seven weeks in Japan and USA travelling with The Friendship Force Club,” she said.

“When we travel we are billetted with Club members,” she said.

Rain brings good things With the above average rainfall in December, now is a great time to visit one of the reserves within the district dedicated to water sensitive landscapes.

One of these reserves is the Lewiston wetlands which offers many eco services (services supplied by natural ecosystems).

As water enters a wetland system the speed of the water is reduced causing the heavy soil particles (sand and gravel) to settle out.

This is classed as sedimentation. As the water moves further into deeper pools within the wetlands the speed of the water is reduced further allowing the finer particles to settle out and clump together – or flocculation.

As the water flows from the deeper pools into the shallow open water, bright sunlight emits high energy

Plants are the living core of the wetlands, responsible for creating and providing the basis of the wetlands ecosystem.

These wetlands serve as an important educational resource for the wider community.

This includes studying habitats and local indigenous wetland flora and fauna, water quality, water conserva-

tion, catchment management, storm water pollution, and biodiversity ecosystems. One thing a wetlands cannot overcome is rubbish such as cigarette butts, bags and tyres.

Put rubbish where it belongs in a bin, not on the side of the road. We all live here so let’s look after what we got.

Christmas fun for all children of Two Wells Fun was the name of the day at the Two Wells Uniting Church’s ‘Fun 4 Kids’ day on Tuesday, December 14 at the football oval.

The gift of Christmas was celebrated with many members of the Two Wells community gathering on the warm morning from 10am–12.

There was face painting, a sand castle, playground equipment and

entertainment by Dan the Music Man. Christmas activities were set up indoors, providing games set around the nativity story.

Organisers were again thrilled with the turn out of local children and famialies, who all enjoyed the friendly atmosphere.

A free sausage sizzle completed another successful day.

Boppa and Santa visit centre The children of Two Wells Playgroup experienced an exciting morning on December 6 at their end-of-year gathering.

Two special guests were welcomed and enjoyed with much enthusiasm. Father Christmas was the first to visit and brought much cheer, smiles, and a few tears whilst helping to hand out the children’s gifts.

Denis Pellizzari, grandfather of Playgroup attendees Jacob, Grace and Jade Williams, donned a full Santa suit and braved the heat to make a wonderful Father Christmas for the third year.

After a delicious morning tea supplied by the parents, the second special guest arrived with a complete bag of tricks - literally. Boppa the Clown, who performed a

variety of hilarious magical fanfare, kept the children entertained and in awe for the remainder of the morning.

Childcare kids attending the centre that morning were also able to enjoy watching Boppa, who was successful in captivating the large audience of little people who responded with laugh out loud reactions.

Natalie and Tamara, Playgroup facilitators in 2010, would like to thank everyone for a great year.

“When you have friendly smiling faces pitching in to help set up, tidy up and provide engaging conversation, it makes Monday mornings all the better for everyone involved,” Natalie said.

“Playgroup is a team effort and al-

though there are the regular facilitators, it is the responsibility of everyone to help turn the morning into a success, even if it is just to talk to a new face and make them feel welcome,” she said.

Playgroup runs from 9am to 11am on Monday mornings during the school term at the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre.
