100 new jobs as glasshouse further expands BRONTE HEWETT reports: The second stage of d’VineRipe’s world class sustainable tomato growing facility near Two Wells is underway and is expected to be operational by January 2011.

Up to 100 new jobs will be created to operate the glasshouse and packing house, taking the total seasonal workforce to between 180 and 200.

Stage one, a $30 million development of the largest glasshouse built in Australia in one stage, opened in 2007.

Completion of the facility on Germantown road will culminate in a $55 million-plus glasshouse operation spanning some 17 hectares.

Stage two comprises a $25 million expansion almost doubling the size of the glasshouse production with a total annual production capacity of about 10,000 tonnes. d’VineRipe general manager, Leon Maree said everything was going according to plan and once the eight hectare stage two was completed in late January, the entire operation would be the second largest of its kind in Australia and the largest to use pad and fan technology.

“The first plants will be planted in the new glasshouse during the first weeks of December,” Mr Maree said.

“The official opening is scheduled for February 22 next year.”

He said stage two was part of d’VineRipe’s long-term business

strategy created since the inception of stage one.

“Stage one has performed particularly well and the progression to stage two was deemed a good investment,” Mr Maree said. n Continued Page 15

Karen’s passion for her district leads to new role at Mallala council

A passion for community safety and responsible animal management encouraged Lewiston resident Karen McColl to involve herself with District Council of Mallala.

As Lewiston ward’s new councillor, Mrs McColl said she was keen to give back to the community by filling a vacancy created by the retirement of long-serving councillor Rudi Farbrici.

While initially becoming a member of the Animal Management Plan Advisory Committee, she later decided to nominate as a councillor as well.

“I’ve always been the type of person to

take on community issues to try to come to resolutions,” Mrs McColl said.

Previously from Kapunda, Mrs McColl moved to Lewiston in 2009 with her husband Stuart. The pair recently celebrated the arrival of Karen’s first child, Bayleigh, who amazingly shares the same birthday as his mother and grandmother.

The family, including Stuart’s two children Annabel and Hamish, share a love for animals and keep horses, miniature goats, chickens, dogs and rabbits at their property. Formerly a human resource officer, Mrs McColl possesses many interpretive legislative skills which she

said would be beneficial to council.

“I’ve learned to interpret legislation and law quickly through my previous roles,” she said. But overall, Mrs McColl said she liked to take a pro-active approach to the community.

“If I identify a problem, I prefer to take positive actions rather than just complain about it,” she said.

Lewiston residents can expect a strong focus on community wellbeing and a push to enhance facilities for young families from Mrs McColl, who also strongly supports responsible animal keeping in Lewiston’s animal husbandry zone.

TWO NEW FACES JOIN DISTRICT COUNCIL OF MALLALA:

Your Two Wells councillors Two Wells will be represented by two new members in District Council of Mallala, with Jan Heley and Mark Wasley sworn into local government following postal elections in November.

Joe Daniele was re-elected with 187 votes, while Cr Heley received 111 and Cr Wasley, 102.

Jan Heley was pleasantly surprised to receive 111 votes. She told the Echo she is looking forward to representing the people of Two Wells on District Council of Mallala.“I was in shockto get that many votes and I would like to thank everyone who did vote for me” she said.

“But I am happy because I feel I’ll be giving back to the community and be a voice,” she said.

Jan said issues she felt needed addressing included public transport and aged care facilities.

“I think public transport needs looking at. If you are old or don’t drive, it makes it very difficult to live in Two Wells,” she said. Jan said she was happy to hear from anyone with concerns on 8520 3175.

He has spent more than 30 years working in law enforcement.

Born and bred in Korunye, Mark returned to the area in 2005 and has been heavily involved in the community ever since.

“Now that I’ve retired, I have the time to put back into the community,” Mark said.

He said he was excited to work for the best for the district.

His community involvement includes membership of Two Wells/Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch group, member of the local Ag bureau, commodore of the Small Boat Club of SA and member of Mallala

Joe Daniele: Veteran councillor Joe Daniele thanked ratepayers for their continued support.

Mr Daniele said he wanted to continue representing the community on issues such as the Two Wells main street urban development and Community Wastewaster Management Scheme (CWMS).

“That really pushed me to stand again.”

Mr Daniele has been involved in many committees and projects during these years, including construction of the Two Wells primary school, community centre and Catholic church.

“I am always available to listen to community problems. I always do my best to help everyone,” Mr Daniele said.

A

town meeting last Wednesday night indicated there were mixed feelings about future shopping developments in or around Two Wells About 100 residents gathered at Two Wells football club to voice their opinion.

The majority of people spoke in favour of the facilities being built on Two Wells’ main street.

However, a survey conducted by councillor Joe Daniele found 388 locals were in favour of the developments being located three kilometres north of town, where 2,500 new homes are expected to be built in the future.

Despite this, it appeared few of the survey respondents were at the meeting with most community members passionate enough to attend expressing fear that a separate centre would damage the existing township and its current businesses.

The meeting was called by Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) and chaired by District Council of Mallala mayor, Marcus Strudwicke.

Council CEO, Charles Mansueto, made a presentation on the progress of the shopping developments to date.

Council is currently in discussions with the State government to gain access to Crown land for the council-approved development plan in the main street.

Cr Daniele plans to attempt to rescind a motion in council which will complicate current plans and delay any development.

Many residents referred to other towns as examples.

TWRAT vice-president, Eddie Stubing, expressed deep concern for the town.

Referring to the proposed new housing development with a shopping centre, Mr Stubing said: “The idea of having two townships next to each other is self-defeating.”

“We need to have a one-town vision with a central identity in the current Two Wells township,” he said.

Mr Stubing said the town had great community spirit and it would be sad to see this split in two.

“I would like to see the town develop to its full potential for future generations.”

He said the Victorian town of Emerald had suffered badly once a new shopping centre was built outside the original hub.

The 6-5 vote means District Council of Mallala must immediately stop negotiations with the government to purchase and sell public land.

too close to other shopping facilities.

“It needs to go north,” she said.

“If shopping facilities are developed in the town, Two Wells will end up like Gawler,” she said.

She said due to traffic congestion, Gawler was the last place she would go to shop.

“I’m not here to defend Joe. Joe doesn’t need defending, but I don’t want Two Wells to become like Gawler,” she said.

Another resident said Two Wells would become like Salisbury if the development occurred north of town.

“Salisbury used to be the commercial hub now it is the last choice for shoppers,” he said.

He said construction of shopping

centres at Elizabeth and Munno Para drew all the customers away from Salisbury, which he said could happen to Two Wells.

“Two Wells will be end up with no businesses and empty shops.”

Bev Smith-Trim said she originally signed Cr Daniele’s survey because he led her to believe all the business owners wanted the facilities north of town.

Cr Daniele rejected these claims.

After talking to business owners and considering the effects on the town, Bev said she wanted to remove her name.

“What a desolate picture this town would be with empty shops,” she said.

Two Wells Meat Store owner Anthony Phillips said he was against any developments outside of town.

“I would much rather a Woolworths across the road rather than three kilometres away,” he said.

Long term locals Rob Dyer and Malcolm Frost said they would like the developments to take place in town so businesses in the town wouldn’t suffer.

Business owner Tony Lange agreed, adding a separate commercial centre would probably result in segregation of the entire town.

“I don’t want to compete with another area down the road,” he said.

“But it doesn’t matter what the residents think. We have to con-

vince the councillors,” Mr Lange concluded.

A petition is being circulated for residents to sign in favour of the developments in the main street.

Ten of 11 District Council of Mallala councillors attended the meeting.

Lewiston councillor, Karen McColl, said she sensed a lot of community and passion in the town.

She suggested a cooperative model might suit the town, like the scheme which has been applied to the Barossa Valley.

Cr Daniele said he was glad he conducted the survey.

“Otherwise we wouldn’t all be here tonight,” he said.

“If council organised this meeting only half a dozen people would show up,” he said.

When mayor Strudwicke attempted to prevent cr Daniele debating a point during question time, cr Daniele said: “I’m sick of you.”

He later debated his point.

“I’ve lived in Two Wells for 42 years. I’ve put a lot of sweat into the town,” he said.

“The survey shows what the people want.”

“I’m not here to cause trouble.

I’m not that type of person.”

Primary school wins $1200 Telstra grant

A $1200 grant will make a big difference to the lives of children from Two Wells Primary School.

The school will provide supervised lunchtime physical fitness activities and is one of 625 local community not-for-profit organisations across Australia to benefit this year from $750,000 of Telstra’s Kids Fund grants from the Telstra Foundation.

Telstra foundation chairman and Olympic gold medallist, Herb Elliot,said the grants helped organisations purchase much-needed equipment to help make learning fun and interactive.

“We are delighted to be able to assist and help children have access to as many opportunities as possible to develop a wide range of skills and experiences– particularly during their developmental years,” Mr Elliot said.

Don’t move business

After reading the article in November Echo regarding councillor Joe Daniele’s ideas about the trading precinct of Two Wells, I have to put fingers to the keyboard and put my feelings forward.

As a long-time resident, having been born and raised here then returning after time in small towns in other states, I have to say I find his idea absurd.

Should the main centre of trading be moved to a site north of the town, we would no doubt see many empty buildings (which I have seen develop as a result of Highway 1 bypassing the town).

It took many years and much hard work by traders to bring the Main street back to the thriving, energetic centre of trading it now is.

As many of the business premises are owned by the traders I feel this move would severely disadvantage them.

I feel the idea of more buildings being built on the western side of the road is the best.

Perhaps the playground could be relocated to the area in the oval which is adjacent to the tennis/netball courts and football club rooms.

This, I am sure, would mean it would be used much more when games are held at Two Wells.

I understand many parents have very real concerns about the safety of their children in its current location.

I understand it has always been there, but times are very different now to what they were when it was built.

I hope ratepayers will see the sense of council’s current plan and allow it to go ahead.

echo 6 Bronte Hewett reports: a city girl with a country heart, Audrey Hart puts the ‘e’ in her surname within the Two Wells community.

Last year celebrating 100 years of the Hart family in the Two Wells region, Audrey is still as involved in the community as ever, and wouldn’t trade her cosy house at Middle Beach for anything.

Moving to the region from her Plympton childhood home 65 years ago, Audrey married the late Clair Hart, and lived at the Hart farmhouse while raising her family.

During her time in the region, she has been involved in numerous organisations and sporting groups, supported the community and donated much of her time to helping out in events and bringing people together.

“I love the people in Two Wells,” she said. “There are so many nice people.”

While she is over 80, she still is an active member of the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Fellowship of the Uniting Church and Foreshore committee.

She was a member of the Probus Club over the years, and has also been heavily involved with Mallala Hospital Auxiliary.

She was made a life member of Two Wells Bowling Club for her loyalty to the club, after holding the position of president for two years, and continuous volunteering.

Explaining not using e-mail is one thing restricting her active involvement, Audrey said she helped by contributing her time and knowledge about the area.

“It’s good to keep the mind active, associate with other people and learn from them,” she said.

Clair, also a strong townsperson, was a life member of the cricket club, golf club and bowls club in Two Wells. Since Clair’s passing 18 years ago, Audrey has had plenty of support from her children– Dennis, Ashley, Kathy and Martin, who, except for Ashley, live locally with their families.

She can be found at the football quite often, watching her grandsons, but believes the sport is a bit rough. “I still threaten to run out with my umbrella when they get rough,” she said.

There is never a dull moment, with Audrey either cooking for trading tables,volunteering at community events, sewing, playing lawn bowls, visiting family or shopping in the main street of Two Wells, where she loves catching up with all the shopkeepers.

She believes the township hasn’t changed a great deal, except the train is no longer running, and it is busier, with more cars.

“I don’t want Two Wells to get too big. I like it as it is,” she said.

However, some things were unavoidable.

“It’ll come. We have to accept it,” she said.

Building up to the Christmas parade

The young and young at heart of Two Wells are eagerly awaiting next Friday, December 10, when the main street is expected to be a hive of activity during the annual Christmas parade.

An exciting evening of stalls, competitions, music, games, creative floats and Christmas cheer is planned for the whole community to enjoy.

This year businesses are encouraged to put more consideration into decorating their premises with a new perpetual trophy awarded to the best.

Street parade committee members have been busy organising the evening and preparing a pleasant visit for special guest South Australia’s Governor, Kevin Scarce and his wife, Liz, who are set to arrive after 6pm.

The road will be closed between Drew street and Wells road from 4.30pm.

Organiser Bev Smith-Trim said it was

not too late to enter the competitions or organise a stall.

“I urge people to get their applications in as soon as possible,” she said.

Stall applications can be found at the Craft Shop, while entries can also be submitted there or sent to PO box 468, Two Wells.

Included in the stalls will be crystals, soaps, candles, jewellery, food, liquorice, cool cone ice creams, hobby artefacts, tea and coffee and much more.

The Redbacks band are leading the parade and will also perform a concert.

Mrs Scarce will judge the competition entries in the old council chambers prior to Mr Scarce officially starting the parade at 7pm.

Colouring in pictures are still available at the Craft Shop for the competition.

‘Watch’ award for Blue Light discos “We wanted to assist in setting up a blue light event in the Two Wells township to provide something else for the young people of the town and region to do,” Maria said.

The first event was held in August 2008 with 91 in attendance.

There has since been a further seven events held with the attendance growing to an average of 191 per event.

“To have a town of this size and have only about 18 people per event less than Port Adelaide is simply amazing,” Maria said.

The group maintains and manages their own finances and arranges all events. It is overseen by the Gawler blue light committee who also provide the equipment for the events as well as supervision and a DJ. Senior constable Ian Skewes said the group should be proud of their achievements.

Const. Skewes is from Barossa Crime Prevention Section, and is Gawler blue light chairperson and was host of the presentation dinner.

The award, presented at the Barossa service area presentation dinner on November 16, acknowledged the group’s commitment, which is over and above the expectations of the Neighbourhood Watch program.

The outstanding success of Two Wells blue light discos, driven by Jennifer Nicol, Maria Aunger and Anne Porter of NHW, was a contributing factor to the group’s overall credit.

Two Wells blue light discos have risen in popularity to become the sixth largest in average attendance in South Australia. This is a remarkable feat for a small town.

The three ladies were the driving force behind the creation of a Gawler blue light sub-branch in 2008, to enable discos to run locally in Two Wells.

Restoring native vegetation

The Landcare group marked its annual meeting with a fine meal on Saturday, November 5 .

It was catered for by the catering team, Sharon and Shane, and was great to get together and acknowledge the achievements for the year.

I would personally like to thank group members for their commitment to the Landcare movement.

In past issues of the Echo, I have talked about the many environmental assets within our district, but one of the most significant assets we have is the land we live on.

As land managers, we have the capability to transform and restore pre-European vegetation around the district.

Since European settlement, native vegetation has been subjected to broad scale clearing resulting in only 14 per cent of pre-European vegetation cover remaining within the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges region. Mallala is within this region with only one per cent of the original vegetation remaining and much of this on roadsides.

Appeal for gifts Due to the great response received in 2009, the District Council of Mallala Library Service will again be supporting the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal in 2010.

Townsfolk come out for another successful Two Wells concert

Another sold out performance culminated on Saturday, November 6 with a full house bopping to Acoustic Juice at the RSL concert which raised $10,000.

It’s the 12th concert hosted in Two Wells and each one has been a sell out.

Local butcher Anthony Phillips and wife Shelley were in on the action with the band ‘As If’, which also played on the night.

There was an abundance of

prizes and raffles, as well as the auction of a cricket ball signed

by Glen McGrath which sold for $300.

All prizes for raffles and auctions were donated by Two Wells, Virginia and Angle Vale businesses.

Organiser and president of Two Wells RSL, Tony Flaherty, said items donated equated to about $5,000.

“All of the food was donated and we had about 20 volunteers who were cooking,

on the door and at the bar,” he said.

The night was compered by Tony with funds contributing to upgrading the Two Wells war memorial to cater for disabled people.

The war memorial will also be upgraded to include the soldiers in Afghanistan and nurses and women who died in war.

Plans also include building a chain mesh fence bordering the cemetery and oval.

It’s the season to be merry and the Uniting Church will ensure a day of joy in the lead up to Christmas.

Two Wells Uniting Church busy bees are preparing for the big “Fun 4 kidz 2” day at Two Wells Football oval on Tuesday, December

14, from 10am-12 noon. Lorraine Bradley, Marlene Burford, Val Packer, Rae Wilson and Mollie Frost have been busy working on craft activities which will be available on the day.

Entertainment will be provided

by Dan the Man, also known as Dan Burt, who is a balloon and musical entertainer extraordinaire and very popular among young and old alike.

He is a one man band and can play several instruments including mouth organ, button accordion,

drum and cymbals. Other activities on the day will be a giant sand pit, toddlers and pre-school tent, outdoor games and many activities suited to 0–12 year olds.

The big day will also feature a sausage sizzle, carol singing,

scones, tea, coffee and of course, lots of friends. Rae Wilson said she was looking forward to seeing lots of familiar faces there.

“It will all be happening on the day – and best of all it’s free for everyone to enjoy,” Rae said.

Trinity’s 10 years at Gawler River Ten-year birthday celebrations for staff and students at Trinity College, Gawler River, included fire works and rock wall climbing on Friday, October 22.

Smokey the koala, a member of Gawler River CFS, was at hand to help promote fire safety.

Other members helping to promote bushfire prevention were Jason Stewart, Tamara Stewart, Stephen Shearer, Craig McLachlan and John Doubikia.

There was a good turn out for the celebrations, with light drizzle not deterring the party-goers.

Veterinary centre a bonus to local pet owners ANIMAL owners in the region will benefit from the University of Adelaide’s new state-of-the-art Veterinary Health Centre at Roseworthy campus, which opened recently.

The centre is likely to appeal to many horse and dog owners living in Lewiston and surrounding areas.

And it could bring many more residents – either students or staff – to the area.

The veterinary centre will play an important role in the treatment and care of domestic pets as well as farming production animals and horses.

The $28 million centre, which is the first of its kind in South Australia, was officially launched on Friday, November 12, by Agriculture Minister, Michael O’Brien.

It is home to teaching and research for the University’s School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, as well as pathology diagnostic services and the new publicly accessible full service clinic, Companion Animal Health Centre.

Previously, these students would have been lost to interstate schools.

Head of Animal and Veterinary Sciences school, professor Gail Anderson, said the modern facilities would encourage more people to stay in SA to study veterinary science.

“It’s completely new facilities, new to the campus and new to the state in that there really isn’t any other facility for training veterinarians at all in South Australia,” she said.

“The production animal side of it will be enhanced by having good pathology training for the vet students,” she said.

“I think everyone who has been involved should be proud of what has been achieved and what will be achieved,” she said.

According to Mr O’Brien, South Australia is becoming the nation’s hub for academic learning in agricultural and veterinary sciences.

Mr O’Brien said the Vet School had already exceeded expectations.

Our hockey role model Two Wells is home to the district’s finest B-grade hockey player, with David McInerney, winning last season’s B-grade association best and fairest award for the Barossa Hockey Association. He also won the Two Wells Hockey Club award.

The 21-year-old not only had a good season on the field, but also coached the U17

hockey team to the grand final.

“It’s been a pretty good season, I’m pretty stoked about it,” he said.

With about 16 years of playing hockey for Two Wells behind him, David said he had many years of playing and coaching ahead of him.

“Yeah I love it. It’s just a good sport to play and be involved with,” he said.

This year the Two Wells Tennis Club is rebuilding its status within the community offering a junior competition and coaching, as well as social evening tennis on Wednesdays and alternate Fridays.

After recently experiencing financial strain, it is the intention of the current enthusiastic committee to rebuild the club, to be strong and vibrant in both juniors and seniors.

Social Tennis

The Wednesday night teams competition is a doubles competition, where you may nominate a team of four players or just go along to help make up a team.

Starting at 7pm and running until March (excluding January), it costs just $5 per player.

Since beginning on October 13,

between nine and 18 players have enjoyed good competition each Wednesday, with some players and juniors coming along and enjoying good match practise.

The Friday night social tennis is an enjoyable evening for families.

It is a doubles social evening where you can go along and enjoy a relaxing hit of tennis.

Children are most welcome and can play safely on the adjoining courts.

Junior Tennis

Junior Tennis is underway with some new and enthusiastic juniors.

This season, the Two Wells Tennis Club has nominated four junior teams in the Lower North Tennis Association, comprising of eight-16 year old boys and girls, and commenced on October 23.

On Saturday mornings, matches are played at places such as Long Plains, Balaklava, Hamley Bridge, Owen, Mallala and Two Wells.

This year the club entered one Division 1 Team comprising Shannen Weir,

Maddy Seccafien, Jamee Seccafien and Matthew Lange.

The Division 2 team comprises Jamie Humphrys, Renee Seccafien, Megan Hatch and Rachel Hatch.

Division 3 has two teams nominated with TW1 comprising Tarsha Briscoe, Macey Briscoe, Natisha Eastman and Monica Baker.

The new TW2 team consists of Jessica Weir, Chelsea Rose Hoppo, Caitlin Musolino and Cassie Lawson, with Angus, Jack and Airlie Tapscott regularly filling in when required.

Professional coaching is available with Brian Lloyd on Monday evenings of the school terms.

It is enjoyed by all the Division 3 players, and some new up and coming tennis stars, and is open to all interested 5-16 year old boys and girls.

If your child is interested in playing tennis in the future, coaching will help encourage them to develop valuable tennis skills.

Coaching for beginners is between 6–7pm and juniors between 7 and 8pm during the school terms, in term four, and term one next year.

All coaching is at the Two Wells tennis courts at a cost of $8 per child.

The Two Wells Football Netball Sporting Club will mark 100 years of formalised football in the town with special celebrations on July 16 next year.

It is intended the celebrations will also acknowledge the history

of the netball club which was formed in 1937, as well as the period in which the town’s footballers participated in an amalgamated club with Virginia (1959-1974).

The initial meeting of the TWFNSC subcommittee to organise

the centenary will take place at the clubrooms from 6.30-7.30 on Monday, December 6.

Performance device saves fuel

Proactive entrepreneur Wayne Obst has created a device to save on fuel consumption.

He said improving the performance of engines has been a high priority for him during the past 40 years.

The idea was conceived four years ago, after Mr Obst ordered a CNC plasma cutting machine from America for another business venture.

“I then began to work on how I could make

a product, using the machine, which would cause the air on the intake side of an engine to rotate and make the engine more efficient,” he said.

The end result is the Obst Design Fuel Saver, which is individually made to suit each intake hose and sold though Automotive service centres.

“The device allows you to achieve the same performance from the engine with less accelerator,” Mr Obst said.

Bowling club update The bowls season is now well under way with the Two Wells Club improving in every round.

Our greens are a joy to bowl on as they are fast and flat.

Our green keeper Greg Giannikos with help from his assistant Graham Goold have made the greens a pleasure to play on and the weather has helped.

On the social side, the club ran a very successful Melbourne Cup Day lunch with 78 guests in attendance.

There was plenty of food, drinks and prizes for the best dressed and for other various styles of dress.

Plus the usual quizzes were held to keep the attendees occupied until the big race.

The best-dressed winners were Cathy Stubing and Eugene Chaplin.

The chief organiser, Beverley Thomas, prepared the wonderful show. The club is very thankful to her and her team of helpers for the meals, plus for many of the prizes donated for the day.

From the results so far, it is pleasing to see teams have a very good chance of retaining our position in both Saturday Premier North 2 and Wednesday Premier North 2.

We were worried we would not be strong enough, but with the influx of some players from other clubs we are at the moment obtaining the results that will be very important for the future of our club.

New members, both women and men, are all settling in well and the selectors have seen their capabilities.

Our Tuesday nights “Learn to Bowl” evenings is a great place to learn how to bowl in a competitive environment.

Don’t forget you must be at least 10 years of age and we will welcome you with open arms.

The number attending these evenings has slowly declined so it would be very pleasing to see increase in numbers back to the numbers we have had for the past two years.
